AFRICHEM EXPO: CREATING NEW CONNECTIONS FOR AFRICA’S SPECIALTY CHEMICALS INDUSTRY
A
frica’s manufacturing industries are evolving rapidly, and behind that transformation is a growing demand for the ingredients, technologies and expertise needed to make better products locally. From paints and coatings to cosmetics, home care products and pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals play a critical role in determining how products perform, look, feel and last. It is in this space that the Africa Specialty Chemicals Expo (AFRICHEM Expo) is establishing itself as a dedicated business platform for Africa’s specialty chemicals and manufacturing industries. Its proposition is straightforward: bring suppliers and manufacturers together, create opportunities for practical business conversations and help African companies access the raw materials, technologies and partnerships required to compete in increasingly sophisticated markets. The platform took an important first step in East Africa with the inaugural AFRICHEM Expo Kenya & Eastern Africa Edition, held from 15–17 July 2026 at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi. The launch brought together about 20 exhibitors, with a strong emphasis on coatings and home and personal care (HPC) manufacturing.
4
A PLATFORM BUILT AROUND THREE SECTORS AFRICHEM Expo is being developed around three complementary industry events, each addressing a major segment of Africa’s manufacturing economy: coatings, home and personal care, and pharmaceuticals. AFRICA COATINGS EXPO The Africa Coatings Expo focuses on the paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants and surface-treatment industries. It provides a meeting point for international and African manufacturers, chemical and raw-material suppliers, formulators, technology providers, equipment manufacturers, distributors and industry experts. The exhibition covers the wider coatings value chain, from resins, binders, pigments, solvents, additives, fillers, polymers and specialty chemicals to formulation technologies, production and mixing equipment, laboratory and testing solutions, application technologies, packaging and environmental solutions. AFRICA HPC MANUFACTURING EXPO The Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo, meanwhile, is focused on the beauty, home and personal care industry. Since its inception in 2025, the regional events have sought to bring
together manufacturers, innovators, suppliers and industry leaders to explore emerging technologies, changing consumer preferences and new market opportunities. Sustainability, innovation and market expansion are central to the HPC platform as African manufacturers look for ways to develop products that meet increasingly sophisticated consumer expectations while remaining commercially competitive. AFRICA PHARMATECH EXPO The third component is the Africa PharmaTech Expo, which responds to the growing opportunities in pharmaceutical manufacturing across the continent. Africa’s expanding population, evolving healthcare systems and increasing demand for locally produced medical equipment and supplies are creating significant opportunities for manufacturers. At the same time, the industry continues to face challenges around infrastructure, regulatory harmonisation and supply-chain capabilities. The Africa PharmaTech Expo events in Nairobi and Lagos are therefore designed as platforms where stakeholders can collaborate, exchange knowledge and explore practical solutions to accelerate pharmaceutical manufacturing. THE INGREDIENTS BEHIND EVERYDAY PRODUCTS For consumers, specialty chemicals are often invisible. Yet they are present in many of the products used every day. In paints and coatings, resins, pigments, additives, polymers, solvents and stabilisers influence properties ranging from colour and durability to application and overall performance. In home and personal care, surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives and functional additives are essential to the development of shampoos, detergents, skincare products, household cleaners and many other formulations. As African consumers become more discerning, manufacturers are under increasing pressure to deliver products that perform better, offer greater value and respond to sustainability concerns. That means access to reliable raw materials, innovative ingredients and modern formulation technologies is becoming increasingly important. AFRICHEM Expo is designed to provide a marketplace where those requirements can meet the companies and technologies capable of addressing them. MORE THAN CHEMICALS The expo’s proposition goes beyond simply displaying chemical products. Modern manufacturing depends on an interconnected ecosystem. A manufacturer may need the right ingredient, but it
also needs processing and mixing equipment, laboratory and testing capabilities, quality-management systems, packaging solutions, logistics and regulatory expertise to turn that ingredient into a commercially successful product. AFRICHEM Expo therefore brings together a broader range of suppliers and service providers. Its portfolio includes specialty, performance and functional chemicals such as additives, surfactants, emulsifiers, solvents, pigments, dyes, resins, polymers, catalysts, stabilisers, preservatives and processing aids. WHY AFRICA, AND WHY NOW? The timing of AFRICHEM Expo reflects a wider shift taking place across African manufacturing. Many markets are gradually moving beyond reliance on imported finished products, while local and regional manufacturers are investing in production capacity, new product categories and stronger supply chains. Industry estimates value Africa’s chemicals industry at around US$100 billion, with projections indicating that it could reach approximately US$300 billion by 2030 and potentially US$500 billion by 2050. Behind these figures are fundamental changes in the African economy. Population growth, urbanisation, expanding consumer markets and the emergence of stronger local brands are creating demand for a wider range of locally manufactured products. That growth requires reliable access to the ingredients, technologies and expertise needed to support production. BUILDING BRIDGES ACROSS AFRICAN MARKETS AFRICHEM Expo’s ambitions extend beyond Nairobi. The platform is being developed as a regional network, with the next Kenya & Eastern Africa Edition scheduled for 28–30 April 2027 at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi, followed by the Nigeria & Western Africa Edition from 4–6 May 2027 at the Landmark Centre in Lagos. “AFRICHEM Expo is a growing platform designed to connect Africa’s chemical value chain, strengthen regional collaboration, and unlock new opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers across the continent,” the organisers say. That regional approach is important because Africa is not a single market. Manufacturers in East Africa can face different sourcing requirements, regulations and market priorities from their counterparts in West Africa. By creating regional meeting points, AFRICHEM Expo can help international suppliers understand local market needs while giving African manufacturers greater access to technologies, ingredients and partnerships suited to their individual markets.

THE NO. 1 INTERNATIONAL TRADE SHOWS FOR COATING, PAINTS & SURFACE TREATMENT INDUSTRY
AFRICA COATINGS EXPO Africa Coatings Expo: A Fresh Coat of Opportunity for Africa’s Coatings Industry
T
here is a lot more to paint than meets the eye. Behind every can of decorative paint, industrial coating or protective finish is a long chain of chemicals, equipment, technology and expertise. And as Africa builds more homes, factories, infrastructure and businesses, that chain is becoming increasingly important. This is the space where Africa Coatings Expo is looking to make its mark. Positioned as a specialist B2B platform for paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, sealants and surfacetreatment technologies, Africa Coatings Expo is designed to bring the industry together around one central idea: making it easier for African manufacturers to find the products, technologies and business partners they need to grow. The platform is part of the wider Africa Specialty Chemicals Expos (AFRICHEM Expos) and is being developed around regional editions serving some of the continent’s key manufacturing and trade markets. MORE THAN JUST PAINT For many people, coatings simply mean the paint on a wall. But the industry reaches far beyond decorative finishes, serving construction, infrastructure, automotive, marine, furniture, packaging, printing, oil and gas, mining, energy and general manufacturing. Coatings can add colour and appearance, protect steel and machinery from harsh environments, or improve the durability and performance of industrial assets. Reflecting this diversity, Africa Coatings Expo brings together the wider value chain, from resins, binders, pigments, solvents, additives and specialty chemicals to formulation technologies, production equipment, laboratory and testing systems, application technologies, packaging and environmental solutions. More importantly, the expo creates a meeting point for suppliers, manufacturers, formulators, distributors, investors, technical experts and other industry professionals. By bringing these players together, it helps turn sourcing challenges and production needs into new business relationships, technology partnerships and opportunities for growth. AFRICA IS BUILDING, AND COATINGS ARE FOLLOWING The outlook for Africa’s coatings industry is closely tied to the continent’s wider development story. Urbanisation, housing construction, infrastructure investment and
14
industrialisation are creating new demand for decorative, protective and industrial coatings, while a growing middle class and more sophisticated local manufacturing base are opening further opportunities. The scale of the opportunity is reflected in recent market research. According to Grand View Research, the Middle East and Africa paints and coatings market generated an estimated US$14.7 billion in revenue in 2025 and is projected to reach US$21.4 billion by 2033, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 4.9% between 2026 and 2033. Eastern Africa is part of this wider growth story. In Kenya, for example, the government’s affordable housing programme is expected to generate significant activity across construction and related manufacturing value chains. Africa Coatings Expo itself highlights the programme as an important opportunity for the coatings sector, noting the government’s plan to facilitate the development of 250,000 affordable housing units annually. As the organisers put it, “There is an urgent need to have a regular event focused on the coatings industry in Eastern Africa. Such an initiative will help boost the growth of the industry in Kenya and the region at large.” And the opportunity does not end with new construction. Every building eventually needs maintenance and repainting; industrial equipment requires protection; steel structures need corrosion control; while vehicles, furniture and manufactured goods all depend on coatings for appearance, durability and performance. That creates a market with two engines of demand: the continued development of new buildings and infrastructure, and the long-term need to maintain and protect the assets already in place. For coatings manufacturers, raw-material suppliers, technology providers and distributors, that combination points to a market with considerable room for innovation, investment and growth. THE PUSH FOR BETTER PRODUCTS The market is changing, though. It is no longer enough for a coating simply to look good. Manufacturers and customers are increasingly interested in performance, durability, efficiency and environmental impact. Africa Coatings Expo highlights a number of emerging areas, including water-based and low-VOC coatings, powder coatings, high-performance and protective coatings, corrosion protection, sustainable and bio-based materials, advanced additives, functional coatings, smart
surfaces, specialty inks, adhesives and sealants. These developments point towards a coatings industry that is becoming more specialised. For manufacturers, that creates both opportunities and challenges. New technologies can help them produce betterperforming products, but adopting those technologies requires access to suppliers, technical knowledge and investment. That is where a focused industry platform can be useful. A CLOSER LOOK AT THE FACTORY The expo also takes a practical view of manufacturing. Its showcase includes mixers, mills, reactors, filling machines, packaging systems and automation technologies, alongside laboratory and testing equipment for areas such as quality control, viscosity, thickness, colour matching and environmental compliance. For a coatings producer, these are not peripheral considerations. Consistency matters. The same product needs to perform the same way from one production batch to another. Efficient equipment can reduce waste and improve productivity, while reliable testing helps manufacturers maintain quality and meet customer specifications. As local producers expand, modernising these parts of the factory could become increasingly important to their competitiveness. BRINGING SUSTAINABILITY INTO THE CONVERSATION Sustainability is another issue that is becoming difficult to ignore. Coatings manufacturers are under growing pressure to think about emissions, waste, raw materials, packaging and production efficiency. The move towards water-based, low-VOC, bio-based and recyclable solutions reflects a wider shift in the industry. But sustainability in Africa will need to be practical. Manufacturers need solutions that can work within local production environments and remain commercially viable. A greener formulation still needs to deliver the performance customers expect, at a price the market can support. That makes access to new technologies and technical expertise particularly valuable. Africa Coatings Expo’s focus on sustainability, research and development, alongside manufacturing technology, raw-material supply, regulatory compliance and workforce development, reflects the fact that these issues are closely connected. TAKING THE CONVERSATION REGIONAL Perhaps the biggest ambition behind the expo is its regional approach. Rather than treating Africa as one single market, Africa Coatings Expo has editions focused on Eastern
and Western Africa. The Kenya & Eastern Africa edition provides a gateway into markets including Kenya and the wider East African region and will be back from 28-30, April 2027 at the Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi, while the Nigeria & Western Africa edition is designed to connect suppliers and businesses with Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone and other West African markets. The event will be held from May 4-6, 2027, at the Landmark Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. This creates opportunities for international companies looking to enter Africa and for African manufacturers seeking access to global technologies. It also gives distributors and local businesses a chance to develop relationships across borders. The organisers describe the model as a way of reducing the complexity and cost of entering multiple African markets, while giving exhibitors direct access to manufacturers, contractors, importers and large buyers. WHERE THE CONVERSATIONS CAN GET PRACTICAL Africa Coatings Expo is designed to take the conversation beyond the exhibition floor, combining product showcases with technical masterclasses, an Africa Coatings Innovation Forum, CEO & Investors Forum, policy roundtables and an Innovation Hub highlighting Made-in-Africa manufacturers and R&D breakthroughs. The aim is to create practical connections: manufacturers can discover new ingredients and equipment, technical sessions can help turn new technologies into solutions, while investors, regulators and industry leaders can explore opportunities around expansion, standards and innovation. At a time when Africa’s coatings industry is evolving rapidly, these connections could prove as valuable as the products on display. Manufacturers need better technologies, suppliers need stronger local partnerships, and the industry needs greater investment in skills, sustainability and innovation. By bringing these players together, Africa Coatings Expo is creating a platform where conversations can lead to partnerships and new opportunities. What makes this approach important is its focus on real-world outcomes rather than passive networking. A discussion on a new resin system can quickly move into a technical session on application. A policy conversation can evolve into regulatory alignment. An investor meeting can open the door to new production capacity or regional expansion. In this way, the event becomes less about observation and more about action. Ultimately, Africa Coatings Expo reflects a simple idea: industries grow faster when knowledge, capital and capability meet in the same room.

AFRICA HPC MANUFACTURING EXPO Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo: Where Africa’s Beauty and Personal Care Industry Gets Down to Business
W
alk through a supermarket and the growth of Africa’s home and personal care industry is hard to miss. Shelves are filled with shampoos, soaps, skincare products, detergents, fragrances, haircare products and household cleaners, while a new generation of African brands is finding its way into both local and international markets. Behind those products is a manufacturing industry that is becoming more ambitious, and increasingly sophisticated. That is the space being served by the Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo, a specialist trade show and conference focused on the beauty, home and personal care manufacturing and packaging industries across Africa. Launched in 2025, the expo is designed to bring together manufacturers, formulators, ingredient suppliers, packaging companies, equipment providers, distributors, retailers, investors and technical experts around the opportunities shaping the sector. The event is also a constituent platform of the wider AFRICHEM Expo, alongside the Africa Coatings Expo and Africa PharmaTech Expo. Together, the events are designed to connect the different parts of Africa’s specialty chemicals and manufacturing ecosystem, from ingredients and formulation technologies to production, packaging and finished products. A MARKET THAT IS GETTING HARDER TO IGNORE There is a good reason the HPC industry is attracting so much attention. According to sources Africa’s beauty and personal care market was projected at US$65.93 billion in 2024, with a forecast compound annual growth rate of 5.99% through 2028. The personal care segment alone was valued at US$31.23 billion in 2024. Other market research points to even faster growth in parts of the sector. Technavio estimates that Africa’s beauty and personal care market will expand by US$10.84 billion between 2026 and 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 9.6%. The numbers vary depending on how the market is defined, but the direction is broadly the same: Africa’s beauty and personal care economy is growing, and manufacturers are increasingly being asked to keep pace. Francis Juma, CEO of FW Brands MEA, the organisers of Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo, notes: “Africa’s HPC market is no longer emerging, it is accelerating. What we are seeing is a shift from consumption-led growth to production-led
20
ambition, and that is exactly why platforms that connect the entire value chain are becoming essential.” The fundamentals are not difficult to understand. Africa has a young and rapidly growing population, rising urbanisation, expanding retail networks and consumers who are becoming more interested in personal grooming, skincare, haircare, wellness and household products. The question is no longer whether the market will grow. It is whether more of that growth can be captured through manufacturing on the continent. FROM INGREDIENTS TO THE FINISHED BOTTLE This is where the Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo takes an interesting approach. Rather than focusing only on finished beauty products, the platform looks at the machinery and supply chains behind them. Its showcase covers fine ingredients and commodities, processing and packaging technologies, finished beauty, home and personal care products, private-label and contract manufacturing, engineering and automation, renewable energy, HVAC and utilities, testing and consultancy services, as well as logistics and supply-chain solutions. That broad scope reflects how the industry actually works. A shampoo, for example, begins with a formulation and a collection of ingredients. It then has to be mixed, processed, tested, filled, packaged, labelled, stored and distributed. The same applies to detergents, creams, lotions, soaps and household cleaning products. Every stage creates an opportunity for technology and innovation. For African manufacturers looking to increase production, improve quality or launch new products, having access to suppliers across that chain can be just as important as finding the right consumer trend. A YOUNGER MARKET IS CHANGING THE PRODUCTS Consumer behaviour is also pushing the industry in new directions. PZ Cussons’ experience in East Africa provides an interesting example. In October 2025, the company announced a KSh150 million investment over the following year to support production, distribution and innovation in Kenya, with a particular focus on younger consumers. The company said consumers under 35 were increasingly experimenting with fragrances, formats and personal-care products, with this group accounting for around 35% to 45% of personal-care spending in urban and modern-trade channels, according to its regional research. The investment was intended to support new pack sizes,
packaging, fragrances and products while strengthening distribution. It is a useful illustration of what is happening across the market: consumers are not simply buying more products; they are looking for more choice. That puts pressure on manufacturers to innovate faster and understand local preferences more closely. PZ Cussons has since confirmed its intention to retain its African business and pursue growth through its existing manufacturing footprint in Kenya and Nigeria, while expanding into adjacent categories including men's grooming and beauty. AFRICA’S OWN BEAUTY STORY IS GETTING LOUDER There is another trend that could become increasingly important: the rise of African brands and African ingredients. Shea butter, baobab, moringa, black seed, marula and other botanicals have long been part of traditional beauty practices across the continent. Increasingly, entrepreneurs are combining those ingredients with modern formulation, packaging and branding to create products for both African and international consumers. The opportunity is not limited to exporting raw materials. The bigger prize is adding value locally, extracting, refining, formulating, manufacturing and branding products before they leave the continent. Nigeria provides a good illustration of the opportunity. In 2026, the country was reported to spend more than US$1.1 billion annually on cosmetics imports, despite a domestic cosmetics market estimated at around US$3.4 billion. Policymakers have been pushing for greater local value addition and domestic manufacturing to reduce dependence on imported products. That gap between consumption and local production is precisely where manufacturers, investors and technology suppliers see opportunity. TWO REGIONS, TWO BIG OPPORTUNITIES The Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo is being developed around two major regional hubs: Nairobi for Eastern Africa and Lagos for Western Africa. The Eastern Africa market alone represents a sizeable consumer base. According to the expo organisers, the region had a population of 513 million in 2024, projected to reach 580 million by 2030 and 855 million by 2050. Its urbanisation rate stood at 31.5% in 2024, while the median age was just 18.1 years. Western Africa presents an equally compelling picture, with a population forecast to reach 580 million by 2030 and 855 million by 2050. The region's urbanisation rate was estimated at 49.8% in 2025, with a median age of 18.2 years. For home and personal care companies, these
demographics matter. Young populations tend to bring changing lifestyles, new grooming habits, stronger interest in brands and a willingness to experiment with products and formats. They also create a long runway for future consumption. MANUFACTURING IS THE REAL CONVERSATION For the Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo, however, the bigger story is not simply consumer growth. It is manufacturing. The organisers describe the platform as a place where manufacturers and industry professionals can explore the technologies and ideas needed for successful and sustainable production. The conference programme is built around practical issues covering formulation, manufacturing, packaging, retail and the wider value chain. That focus is increasingly relevant as manufacturers face familiar challenges: expensive imported inputs, inconsistent supply chains, energy costs, limited access to specialised technology and the need to maintain quality while keeping products affordable. Automation, better processing equipment, efficient utilities, modern packaging and stronger testing capabilities can all help address those challenges. At the same time, local contract manufacturers and private-label producers could provide smaller African brands with a route into the market without requiring them to build entire factories from scratch. A PLATFORM FOR WHAT COMES NEXT The Africa HPC Manufacturing Expo is arriving as Africa’s beauty, home and personal care industry shifts from a consumer story towards a stronger manufacturing story. The opportunity goes beyond a growing customer base: it includes developing local formulations, processing African ingredients, building brands, expanding production and keeping more value within the continent. Following its 15–17 July 2026 Nairobi edition, the expo returns to the Sarit Expo Centre from 28–30 April 2027, while the Nigeria & Western Africa edition takes place from 4–6 May 2027 at Landmark Centre, Lagos. As a constituent event of AFRICHEM Expo, the platform will continue connecting suppliers, manufacturers, technology providers and other players across the value chain. Looking ahead, the organisers are calling for greater industry participation. “We want 2027 to be a year of deeper engagement, stronger partnerships and more practical conversations that can help accelerate HPC manufacturing across Africa,” they say. With consumers already driving demand, the next question is how much of what Africa buys can be formulated, manufactured, packaged and branded closer to home. That is where the expo hopes to make a difference.

AFRICA PHARMATECH EXPO Africa PharmaTech Expo: Connecting Africa’s Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Future
A
frica’s pharmaceutical industry is at an interesting point in its development. The continent has a huge and growing need for medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and healthcare technologies, yet much of what it consumes is still sourced from outside its borders. That gap is increasingly being seen not simply as a challenge, but as an opportunity. The Africa PharmaTech Expo, a constituent event of AFRICHEM Expo, is being developed around this opportunity, creating a dedicated meeting point where pharmaceutical manufacturers, technology providers, suppliers, investors, researchers, regulators and other industry professionals can connect and explore what it will take to build a stronger pharmaceutical manufacturing base in Africa. Anchored strongly in the Healthcare Middle East & Africa magazine and website, the expo aims to bring technologies, investments and innovations in the Africa’s continent where the gap exists. The need is clear. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) estimates that Africa’s pharmaceutical market could reach US$50 billion by 2030, up from US$20.8 billion in 2013. At the same time, the continent’s local pharmaceutical industry will require an estimated US$11 billion in investment by 2030 to support its expansion. Those numbers tell only part of the story. The bigger question is how Africa can ensure that a greater share of this growing demand is met by products manufactured within Africa. WHY AFRICA’S PHARMACEUTICAL OPPORTUNITY MATTERS Africa’s pharmaceutical challenge is about far more than market size. The continent carries around a quarter of the global disease burden, yet imports more than 70% of its medicines, according to the IFC. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed just how vulnerable that dependence can be when global supply chains are disrupted, making local production increasingly a matter of health security as well as industrial development. Africa currently has only about 375 drug manufacturers, compared with roughly 5,000 in China and 10,500 in India, while pharmaceutical imports account for up to 70–90% of medicines consumed in many sub-Saharan African countries. At the same time, Africa CDC has set a goal of achieving vaccine sovereignty by 2040, a target that,
26
according to the IFC, would require African manufacturers to produce 73 times more vaccines than they do today. Closing this gap will require investment, technology, skills and stronger partnerships. The opportunity stretches across the entire pharmaceutical value chain, from APIs and excipients to formulation, processing, packaging, laboratory testing, biotechnology, cold-chain systems and quality control. This is where platforms such as Africa PharmaTech Expo can help connect the expertise and investment needed to turn Africa’s growing healthcare demand into stronger local manufacturing capability. A MARKET WITH MOMENTUM The commercial case is also becoming stronger. Africa’s population is growing, healthcare systems are expanding and demand is increasing for medicines addressing both infectious and non-communicable diseases. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer are becoming increasingly important alongside longstanding challenges such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV. The broader Middle East and Africa pharmaceutical market was valued at approximately US$30.07 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$42.42 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 6.1%, according to an industry report published by World Health Expo. For manufacturers and technology companies, that represents a sizeable and expanding market. But there is a distinction between market growth and manufacturing growth. Africa can continue importing medicines to satisfy rising demand, or it can use that demand as a catalyst to develop stronger domestic and regional production capabilities. The latter requires investment in factories, equipment, skills and technology — as well as stronger connections between African businesses and global pharmaceutical companies. INVESTMENT IS ALREADY HAPPENING The shift towards local manufacturing is not merely theoretical. In Kenya, for example, the government launched its Health Products and Technologies Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026–2030 in June 2026. The strategy aims to expand domestic production of medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and other health products, while reducing
reliance on imports and positioning Kenya as a regional manufacturing hub. Only weeks later, Kenya advanced plans for a proposed US$216 million Biotech Life Sciences Park at Konza Technopolis. The project is expected to focus on active pharmaceutical ingredient production, biotechnology innovation and life-sciences industrialisation, subject to feasibility and development processes. There is also significant international capital behind the wider African manufacturing push. IFC has arranged €1.1 billion in long-term financing across two syndicated facilities with Aspen Pharmacare, supporting vaccine supply chains and access to critical medicines in sub-Saharan Africa. These investments illustrate the scale of capital and expertise required. CONNECTING AFRICA WITH GLOBAL EXPERTISE Africa does not need to build its pharmaceutical industry alone. Global pharmaceutical companies and technology providers already possess decades of experience in areas such as advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, quality systems, automation, packaging, laboratory technologies and regulatory compliance. The opportunity is to create partnerships that combine that expertise with Africa’s market knowledge, manufacturing potential and growing consumer base. Africa PharmaTech Expo is intended to provide one such meeting point. As a constituent event of AFRICHEM Expo, it forms part of a broader platform connecting global and regional suppliers with Africa’s expanding industrial sectors. The expo’s focus includes pharmaceutical actives and excipients, processing and packaging technologies, laboratory equipment, manufacturing systems and other solutions supporting the pharmaceutical value chain. The Eastern Africa edition, for example, is designed to facilitate partnerships and investment opportunities while promoting regulatory convergence and quality standards across African countries. That regional approach is important because Africa is not one pharmaceutical market. Kenya has different opportunities from Nigeria. East Africa has different regulatory and supply-chain dynamics from West Africa. A global supplier entering the continent needs to understand those differences, while African manufacturers need access to technologies that can work within their specific operating environments. A CONFERENCE FOR THE IDEAS BEHIND THE INDUSTRY An exhibition can put technology on display. A conference can explain what it means. Africa PharmaTech Expo will therefore incorporate a professional conference designed
to give manufacturers, researchers, regulators, investors and technology specialists a place to discuss the issues shaping the industry. The discussions can move beyond product presentations into areas such as advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, quality assurance, automation, packaging innovation, supply-chain resilience, regulatory convergence, local production, sustainability and new approaches to research and development. That kind of exchange is important in a sector where technology changes quickly and regulatory requirements continue to evolve. A manufacturer may discover a new piece of equipment on the exhibition floor, but a technical session can provide the context needed to understand where it fits into a modern production environment. Likewise, discussions between regulators and manufacturers can help identify practical barriers to local production, while researchers and technology companies can explore opportunities to translate innovation into commercially viable products. The conference is therefore intended to become a space not only for learning, but for industry dialogue. CREATING A HEALTHIER MANUFACTURING ECOSYSTEM Africa’s pharmaceutical opportunity is ultimately about more than market size. It is about whether the continent can develop an ecosystem capable of producing more of the medicines and healthcare technologies its people need. That means stronger factories, better laboratories, skilled professionals, reliable supply chains, supportive regulation, access to finance and partnerships with companies that have the technology and experience to accelerate development. That is the role Africa PharmaTech Expo is seeking to play. As a constituent event of AFRICHEM Expo, it brings the pharmaceutical manufacturing conversation into a wider industrial ecosystem, connecting chemicals, ingredients, processing technologies, packaging, laboratory solutions and other capabilities. The opportunity is substantial. Africa’s pharmaceutical market is growing, investment is beginning to follow, and governments are increasingly recognising local manufacturing as a strategic priority. Looking ahead, the next editions will deepen this mission across key regional hubs. The Kenyan edition will take place from April 28–30, 2027 at Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi, while the Nigeria edition will follow from May 4–6, 2027 at the Landmark Hotel, Lagos. These gatherings are expected to further strengthen Africa’s manufacturing dialogue and global partnerships. Africa PharmaTech Expo is creating a place for those conversations to happen.
