Pendle Borough Council mandates use of CheckedSafe app for all Private Hire and Hackney Carriages

W

e are delighted to announce that we have just reached an agreement with Pendle Borough Council wherein the Council have mandated the use of the CheckedSafe App. Now, all Private Hire and Hackney Carriages issued with licences in the borough of Pendle are required, as a condition of their licence, to undertake a daily walkaround check, using CheckedSafe.

This is to improve the standards of the vehicles and importantly it is backed up with the imposition of sanctions if checks are not undertaken or undertaken properly.

The importance of this change cannot be overstated. We have been advocating for some time for all such vehicles to be subject to a pre-use daily walkaround check and now Pendle Council have taken the bold move of mandating the same. We anticipate that other local authorities will watch this with interest and hopefully follow suit.

We are also just about to launch our GB Domestic Hours App. We believe that we are the 1st company in the UK to do this. It’s a highly complex area but also very exciting and again a huge industry game changer. Most companies still record data on paper in the W20 books so the move the digital is a huge leap forward.

Finally we launched our Driver Licencing Checking service last year and had our first audit this year – the auditors told us that we are the only company offering remote licence checking, wherein we read the data on the driving licence by taking a picture of it and parsing the data. The makes the whole process fully remote.

New MENZEL headquarters: Larger plant for larger motors A

t the new motor plant of Menzel Elektromotoren, which is now fully operational in Hennigsdorf, near Berlin, Germany, the company looks forward to a bumper year with even larger motor production. Moving to the new site with a total area of 24,000m², the electric motor manufacturer increases its floor space and capacities, optimises the factory layout for an efficient production flow and is planning to create additional jobs.

The crane capacities will be increased to 80 tons and the entire shop floor will be accessible via two crane levels, which will bring significant logistical advantages.

In recent years, MENZEL has seen a growing demand for larger, more complex drive systems with a variety of auxiliary equipment such as transformers, converters, controllers and starters. The new test facilities are tailored to this need. For example, the area for load testing of large machines and generators has been significantly enhanced to cater for the largest frame sizes and loadings. A two-floor construction inside the load test field will house the control room, offices for the test field technicians and a separate

lounge from which customers can observe ongoing tests. Soundproofing measures have been completed, and heavy-duty racks for shelf loads of 6,000kg have been procured, which will accommodate part of the large MENZEL motor inventory and thus further shorten delivery times.

The gradual relocation from the existing headquarters in Berlin was complete prior to the end of December 2023.

Lab Innovations Preview

The biggest lab industry trade show in the UK Laboratory Supplies, IKA, Analytix, Bronkhorst UK and Integra Biosciences.

One of the biggest reasons to visit this year is the show’s brand-new Quality Infrastructure Forum (QI Forum). angzauner and ENGEL have jointly developed innovative composite processing technologies that set new standards in lightweight construction.

Both companies bring their specific strengths: ENGEL in injection moulding technology and Langzauner in the development of hydraulic presses and special machines.

This collaboration resulted in a combined system for processing composite semi-finished products, integrating press and injection moulding technology. This technology allows for the forming and backinjecting of semi-finished products in a single process step, making production more efficient and energy-saving – ideal for applications in e-mobility and urban air mobility.

Real data, real improvements Scott Fletcher, Head of Sales and Marketing at manufacturing software specialist Tascomp, explains how the company’s PlantRun OEE, Machine Downtime and Manufacturing Information System can empower businesses to make the right manufacturing decisions at the right time

W

e all know there are common challenges and goals no matter what industry sector we are in.

We need to become leaner, more efficient, produce far less waste, and ultimately improve productivity throughout. To top this off, we have limited resources and pressure from our end customers to deliver more, ideally at a lower cost.

Businesses must make tough decisions to move forward. But how do you know it is the right thing to do? Your gut will get you so far, but good data will answer the real questions.

For example, with one timber mill, it was presumed that the operator on one of their stackers was stood waiting for about an hour and a half in an eight hour shift. After an automatic OEE system was installed, it became clear that it was actually four and a half hours. As a result, the company’s process was adjusted to build up a buffer, and the operator redeployed to other tasks during their ‘newly available’ time.

Kemtile wades into Wessex Water flooring challenge

K

emtile, a division of Stonhard, has recently completed the installation of a new hard-wearing and chemically resistant flooring solution for Wessex Water at their Food Hall Facility.

A proactive approach to health and safety was maintained throughout the installation with the installation teams complying with the site CDM regs which included the mandatory use of gas monitors at all times.

The regional water and sewerage business – which serves 2.9 million customers across the south-west of England – had recruited Kemtile to provide a suitable flooring solution for their ‘food to power’ facility in Avonmouth.

Dan Owen, Project Engineer of GENco/Wessex Water Enterprises, said, “Kemtile brought great expertise to the table from day one dealing with a significant level of deterioration and providing immediate support – as well as supplying the final flooring fix over the 18 months that we worked together. I commend them on seamless delivery with minimum disruption to the rest of the plant which remained in operation throughout.”

Corrosive elements contained in the domestic waste treated on-site by Wessex had attacked the concrete floor surface to leave it ‘pitted’ and uneven. A subsequent ‘overlayment’ installed to combat the problem had also failed within a short period of time leaving the floor needing a complete rethink in terms of a solution.

Kemtile visited the site over 18 months and undertook testing works of the existing finishes and structural slab by taking ‘cores’ and having these examined by a concrete testing laboratory. Assisteds

by Sean McIntyre, Stonhard Coatings and Lining Manager, Kemtile developed a specification that included the removal of all the existing finishes back down to the structural slab and the installation of a new fit-for-purpose floor. This included – a new concrete overlay to ‘falls’, new surface drainage and

a chemically resistant, hard-wearing floor finish capable of withstanding the movement and ‘scaping’ from a 25-tonne mechanical loader.

Kemtile installed Stonhard’s Stonclad UT – a highimpact polyurethane-based floor screed which exhibits excellent abrasion, thermal shock, thermal cycling and chemical-resistant characteristics.

Stonclad UT was installed at 12mm thick, it incorporated a ‘unique’ wear-indicating layer that shows if maintenance is required given the extremes of use in this facility. The system was further reinforced with a layer of Stonhard’s Stonchem 601 chemical-resistant lining system to further enhance its chemical-resistant properties.

Kemtile’s David Priest commented, “This was a significant project for us – in a sector with huge potential – involving a number of external stakeholders for sign-off including the original structural engineers.

ennis Long, chief system designer at Watlow, explores how electric process heaters can support decarbonisation efforts.

Heat is essential in processing and refining hydrocarbons, with fossil fuel-based heaters traditionally used for these operations. However, growing pressures to reduce carbon emissions is driving engineers to explore electric process heaters.

Switching from fossil fuels industrial process heating is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Replacing fossil fuel-based heaters with electric alternatives powered by green energy could significantly aid decarbonisation by reducing Scope One emissions, which come directly from burning fuels like natural gas. Scope Two emissions result from importing energy, while Scope Three are emissions created by product use, such as vehicle emissions.

Reducing all three is key to meeting decarbonisation targets.

A survey conducted

by Watlow found that 90% of oil and gas leaders are already focused on decarbonisation, yet, electric process heaters are still not widely adopted due to familiarity concerns.

Historically, they have been used in limited applications with smaller sizes and lower voltages, leaving questions about control and maintenance for larger systems.

However, modern electric heaters now offer comparable, if not better, performance than their fossil fuel-powered counterparts.

Best practice for high limit safety sensors

E

lectrical heating systems have several safety features built in to prevent dangerous situations. High-limit sensors, or safety sensors, are one of the most important. Not only do they protect people, they help keep manufacturing lines running by limiting damage to equipment and product. In this article, Jeremy Ohse (pictured) at industrial heater, temperature sensor, and controller manufacturer, Watlow, explores best practice and considerations for high-limit safety sensors.

Understanding safety sensors Thermal loops consist of a heater, temperature sensor, and heater controller. The controller has a temperature setpoint, receives a signal from the temperature sensor, and modulates power to the heater to maintain the temperature setpoint.

If there is a failure in the primary thermal control loop, the redundant safety sensor can tell the controller to reduce power to the heater or shut down the entire system. The most common failures are physically damaged sensors, worn out components, and pinched wires.

In an application away from industry, a hot tub uses a high-limit sensor to prevent the water from getting too hot.

If the primary control loop fails, the heater will continue to heat the water. When the water temperature reaches a certain level, usually between 110 and 120°F, the highlimit sensor disables the heater to keep the water at a safe, enjoyable temperature.

To provide additional safety, when the high-limit sensor trips the system, users are ‘latched out’ until the system is inspected and reset by an operator, system designer, or

manufacturing engineer. Once the system is repaired and reset, it will operate normally again. In the hot tub example, the highlimit sensor will likely disable the pump in addition to the heater. A technician may need to inspect the hot tub and replace the primary sensor – or other defective parts – before resetting the system. This safety latch is often achieved in industrial systems through a programmable temperature controller and mechanical relay.

High limit applications The high limit sensor in these scenarios are often thermistors, resistive temperature detectors (RTDs), or thermocouples (TCs). The best type of high-limit sensor is application dependent. The controller is often programmable so the user can adjust the primary control loop and the safety control loop temperature setpoints.

Location is essential For the safest operation, the safety sensor should be attached directly to or immediately adjacent to the heat source. The farther the safety sensor is from the heat source, the more likely unwanted damage will occur when the safety control loop is engaged. For this reason, Watlow offers many heating products with sensors already embedded in the heaters.

Multiple high-limit sensors are used on large heating systems. A very large circulation heater may have several safety sensors to help identify failures in different sections of the heater. This approach allows operators to identify potential issues before they become a bigger problem.

Additional considerations While the primary sensor and safety sensor are often two separate physical objects, they both plug into a single

heater controller. Just as there could be a failure in the sensor, there could be a failure inside the heater control. If the heater controller is agency certified (UL, CE, or ETL), it’s likely there are two independent micro-controllers inside the heater control box, one for the primary thermal loop and one for the safety loop. This second safety microcontroller is an important often forgot about distinction when selecting a heater controller. Look for the agency marking and inquire with the manufacturer if in doubt.

Runaway thermal systems create risk of both fire and electrical shock.

Some systems involve a chemical reaction. Even after the heater is turned off, the chemical reaction may continue.

If it becomes exothermic and continues to produce heat, shutting down the heaters will not stop the temperature from continuing to rise. In this example, the safety sensor could activate a fire suppression system.

A less accurate, lower cost method to provide safety could utilise a resettable thermostat or thermal fuse instead of a high-limit safety sensor. These devices are wired in series with the heater and create an open circuit when a manufacturer pre-defined temperature is exceeded. These alternatives can be good solutions in some applications, but nearly always have lower performance and are driven by cost.

Art & Sea hails game-changing Mimaki CJV330-160 from Soyang Hardware The Scottish vinyl graphic design business installed the new Mimaki CJV330-160 in July 2024 and has already seen a significant improvement in production

cottish vinyl graphic design business Art & Sea has praised the impact of its new Mimaki CJV330-160 solvent printer/cutter from Soyang Hardware, hailing the machine as a ‘game-changer’ for the company despite having only been in place for just a few weeks.

Established in 2011, Art & Sea began its life in a spare room at the house of owner, Leonie Woolf, initially running as a marine specialised business producing graphics for boats and kayaks. Over the years, the company has evolved to become a much more diversified business, providing everything from vehicle graphics, wraps and rally car livery to signage and shop front graphics – all from two dedicated office units.

This evolution has been driven by investment in new technology, growing its initial inventory from a single Summa cutter to adding inhouse printing last year by investing in a Roland VG3-540 printer. After the early success of its venture into print, Art & Sea recently took the decision to bolster this further and went in search of a second printer.

“We’ve had our VG3 running for a year now and when we bought it, I had no idea how it was going to go, how quickly it would pay for itself or how much work we’d even have for it,” Art & Sea Owner, Leonie Woolf, said. “I just knew it was the next step

for our business growth.

“A year later and we’d been struggling with a constant backlog of printing; it’s not something I ever thought I’d say but a second printer was needed. As all our work is destined for something outside, we laminate pretty much everything, and the custom nature of our business means that most things also need to be cut to shape; it’s not your standard print for anything. It wasn’t necessarily a case of wanting to increase our intake of work, but better manage our time and get through the work we have more efficiently.”

Leonie said Art & Sea considered taking on a second Roland machine but after speaking with Damien Martin, Hardware Development Manager at Soyang Hardware, it was soon clear that the CJV330-160 was a better fit for the company’s evolving requirements.

“The 60% speed increase with matched quality to the VG3 was just what we needed,” Leonie said. “At the same time, we were gaining a wider printing width with the 1,610mm.

It seemed the perfect solution to our backlog while at the same time offering further benefits with a wider print such as vehicle wraps.”

Art & Sea took delivery of the machine in mid-July and was already printing within just a few days of it being installed. Despite the printer

having only been running a matter of weeks, Leonie said there has been a marked improvement in production.

“It’s been a game changer,” said Leonie. “It’s already saving us time and we’ve been super impressed with its speed and colour quality. It was definitely the right decision for us.

“We actually had a pretty big lastminute job come in the week the printer was being installed so we had the VG3 running non-stop to cope with that.

“The minute the Mimaki was up and running we switched the printing over to that and it got our print time down from 25 minutes to 10 minutes per sheet. Given that we had around 15 prints to do, this saved us working into the night.”

Looking ahead, Leonie said the new Mimaki machine will play a major part in the company’s growth plan, which includes moving into additional markets and taking on more staff to support this expansion.

“Given the additional speed, it will certainly increase our productivity, offering a quicker turnaround for our customers and allowing us to look at opportunities for new markets and take on additional staff,” Leonie said.

“We’re also looking at other printing technology that will complement our current set up, so we’re super excited to see where this takes us.”

Soyang Europe builds sustainable future for customers with Reconomy S

oyang Europe has been working with Reconomy to offer customers access to environmentally focused and responsible waste management services.

International circular economy specialist Reconomy has revealed how its relationship with wide-format and superwide-format media manufacturer and distributor Soyang Europe is helping UK print service providers to improve their environmental credentials.

Reconomy combines technology and skills to enable businesses to better manage their resources, helping to reduce waste, optimise their supply chains, and contribute in a meaningful way towards the circular economy.

While this involves working directly with print companies, Reconomy is also partnered with several leading manufacturers and distributors, supporting their customers with textile waste management. One such partnership is with Soyang Europe, whereby printers using materials from Soyang Europe can responsibly dispose of their waste.

This partnership came about three years ago with the support of FESPA UK. Reconomy was working on various sustainability initiatives with FESPA, while Soyang Europe is a long-term member of the association.

The process works with Reconomy providing customers with a baler to prepare their textile waste. Soyang Europe then collects the bales when delivering new products to customers, with the waste taken to its facility in Altham in Lancashire ready for bulk collection and transportation to a recycling facility for processing.

“It was a perfect fit,” said Reconomy Director, Jon Hutton. “Soyang has always been proactive in wanting to offer their customers, and the wider industry, waste management solutions for their products.

“Sustainability is a hot topic for several reasons. Brands and consumers are looking down the supply chain for environmental credentials, so it’s therefore a driving factor in how to not only maintain and gain business, but how a printer positions themselves for the long term.”

Mark Mashiter, Managing Director at Soyang Europe, added, “It provides our customers with an outlet for their waste. This works well with local customers when we deliver orders to them; we can bring any textile bales back with us and store them in our yard until they are collected.”

Renewable energy & recycling materials Originally, Reconomy had sourced a solution for recycling PVC banner and polyester fabrics at a UK site, whereby waste was blended with other polymers to produce low grade products. While this process ended when more desirable material became available to the market, a recovery route was soon set up and, with the support of Wheeldon Brothers, waste could now be diverted from landfill to renewable energy.

Reconomy combines technology and skills to enable businesses to better manage their resources, helping to reduce waste, optimise their supply chains, and contribute towards the circular economy However, recycling has since been reestablished and material is again being used in manufacturing processes. Coupled with its use for renewable energy, all of this is helping work towards a circular economy.

An additional benefit to the service is that Soyang Europe is willing to take other supplier’s waste textiles along with its own.

This option is available to customers using their own transport within a set radius of Soyang Europe’s facility and when making deliveries.

“Soyang Europe wants to be part of the environmental solution and not the problem,” Jon said. “The take-back scheme provides a platform for printers to demonstrate their sustainability by providing customers with an outlet for their recycling waste.

“Several customers have engaged with Reconomy further and are now collecting their own clients’ end-of-campaign textiles, integrating this with the collection of their materials. All loads are tracked, and Certificates of Recycling can be issued once the material has been processed.”

The work does not stop here for Reconomy, with Jon saying the company will continue to work with Soyang Europe, FESPA UK and its wider membership base to provide more sustainable solutions to the UK industry.

“It’s our aim to continue to be a driving force in educating the industry on the importance of recycling and developing circular economies,” Jon said. “This, with the continued support of Soyang Europe, will ensure more customers take up this service.”

GH Display eyes sustainable growth with new Veloblade Nexus from Soyang Hardware The Peterborough-based custom exhibition stand builder and display manufacturer said the new VeloBlade Nexus will allow it to create a wider range of sustainable products for customers

ustom exhibition stand builder and display manufacturer GH Display has said its purchase of a new VeloBlade Nexus digital die-cutting system from Soyang Hardware will help the company provide customers with more sustainable solutions.

Located in Peterborough, GH Display was launched in 1976 by Graham Hodson who produced signs and displays in his garden shed. Graham continued to evolve the business over the years, relocating to a larger space, and eventually passed the company on to his son and daughter-in-law, John and Jenny Hodson, when he retired in 2013.

John and Jenny instilled a renewed focus on driving ecommerce sales, emphasising that GH Display provide a one-stop-shop for all things relating to exhibitions and events. With this approach, the company has grown on average by 30% year-on-year since 2013 and is now working with clients across a range of markets on exhibitions and displays.

Such has been the growth trajectory of GH Display that the company recently took the decision to bolster its production setup with the addition of a new digital cutter. While researching the market, the company was keen to identify a machine that could deliver more planet friendly displays using paper, cardboard and other recyclable or recycled materials.

The Peterborough-based custom exhibition stand builder and display manufacturer said the new VeloBlade Nexus will allow it to create a wider range of sustainable products for customers.

After shopping around, GH Display found the VeloBlade Nexus to be the ideal solution, purchasing the machine from Soyang Hardware, an approved reseller of the cutter range manufactured by Vivid Laminating Technologies.

Jenny, now a director at the company, said the machine is much smarter and more sophisticated in how and what it can produce than the business’s existing cutting equipment.

“We installed the machine in late July and have been using it in earnest, with the first job being to create some graphic panels for Peterborough United, our local football team,” Jenny said. “So far, the speed and quality of production has been everything we had hoped it would be and we are confident it will take the GH Display product range to the next level for us.”

Jenny also spoke about how the VeloBlade Nexus supports GH Display’s long-term plan of offering customers access to a wider range of sustainable exhibition and display products.

“We are excited about the wide range of eco-friendly portable and collapsible products we are now able to offer and will soon be selling via our website,” Jenny said. “We plan to design and make collapsible and highly portable recycled and recyclable rigid board displays to further widen our sustainable display range.”

Efficient powder & bulk material transfer In the past the flat price of a conveying system came first as a business criteria, however, modern costs/benefits analysis goes much deeper, especially in the chemical industry. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) are now more important for industrial items than a supposedly low purchasing price.

For example, if maintenance and mounting costs for a simple control valve make up 70% of the life cycle cost &, at the same time, the original purchasing price accounts for up to 25% of the overall total cost, a new approach is recommended. Especially when dealing with the transfer of powders & bulk materials.

The new units include a touch-free 2-litre soap dispenser and large capacity paper towel dispenser. They are designed to operate from behind a mirror or panel and are intended principally for incorporation into bespoke cabinets.

The distinctive ‘pull down’ feature of the new products supports easy replenishment; the new units feature lockable sliding cartridges. They drop down below the bottom of the cabinet, providing easy access to the soap and paper towel containers. Once refilled, they can be raised back and locked in place to protect the consumables from tampering.

In this respect, they differ from many other cabinet systems, which typically require the front-facing mirror to be opened outward like a door.

All the dispensers in the range are designed to be easy to install. They require an aperture to be cut into the cabinet’s base; the dispenser is then inserted and screwed into position. Detailed technical data and installation guides are available.
