LEONIE TAY HONG ENG

I was having a health crisis in March 2024, and Emily Lim, my ex-staff, Doreen’s boss, invited me to FMC to pray and ask God for help. I remembered the "warm care and comfort" the people in FMC, especially Elizabeth Yeak, who had taken me under her wing to guide and help me, a new believer, to understand the bible and God and regularly pray for me.

The FMC people I met were exceedingly kind, made me feel at home and prayed for my health. God is gracious and has answered my prayers, and since then, I have been in good health.

I accepted Christ as my Saviour on 24 March 2024 during my first visit to FMC. A verse that speaks to me "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). I believe that by committing myself to Christ, who had died for my sins, I will go to heaven.

It is a gradual process, and I am still learning each day to be His Child, about Jesus Christ and God, how to pray, and be acquainted with the Gospel through Daily Manna Together and disciple's class.

ROSALYND JESSYE NG JUI CHOO

Jesus Christ is the son of God . He died on the cross to take away my sin and sins of mankind. This touches me tremendously.

Honestly, before and after my decision to get baptised, my feelings are the same. Jesus is always in my heart. I hold him in awe! After almost 2 years with the Tuesday senior group at Pentecost Fellowship, I get to feel the peace of the church volunteers as they go about their concerns and sincerity. I would like to be like them. The seniors constantly taught me about eternal life with Jesus.

Their influence is the result of my decision to get baptised and be transformed to be more Christ-like.

KRISHNAN PALLANIAPPAN

Jesus has been the way of my life since 2016.

Before my encounter with Christ, I was caught in a cycle of crime and incarceration. At one point, while serving a sentence, I was convicted of another offense. When prison officers asked me why I kept returning to this life, I couldn't find the words to explain my condition or the deep pain I was carrying. The greatest loss of my life was my mother, who committed suicide. Although she passed away before I ever entered prison, her death left a void that led me down a notorious and destructive path.

My life changed completely in 2016. While behind bars, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Shepherd. I discovered that Christianity is not just a religion, but a beautiful, personal bond between a person and the Lord. To be honest, life hasn't been a bed of roses since I accepted Christ.

However, I have learned that the most important thing is who you worship and honour. It took a lot of courage for me to stand up and share my past, but I do so to testify to the relationship I now have with the Almighty Jesus Christ.

I thank Jesus for saving me.

JADEN CHRISTIAN LIM

Life before surrendering to Christ was a bit dull and meaningless as I was simply going through the motion of everyday life. Despite going to church regularly, I felt like life had no purpose besides school until I fully surrendered to God.

When I was younger, I have committed to Christ a few times and moved from church to church as I constantly questioned my Salvation. But after joining Foochow Methodist Church and going for FYP, I decided to fully commit to Christ! Now, I do my best in everything to glorify His name and that He is my God and the Lord of my life. I also have faith and trust in Him and that He shall not forsake me.

MATTHEW KHO

Before I took Christ seriously, I struggled with problems like fame, lust and envy. I always wanted to be first. Absolutely first both academically and in sports. I loathed people who were better than me in both. And I looked down on people who struggled in their studies or sports.

Additionally, at a very young age, I struggled with obsessions, affecting my relationship with friends and family members. In church, I thought Christianity was just a religion, worshipping this God that I don’t really care much about. My only reason for going to church at that time was only because my parents also went. My relationship with God was extremely transactional.

In my faith journey, there were 3 major turning points, “Alpha”, O-levels and “Finding Your Place”. Firstly, Alpha was one of the first turning points in my Christian journey. The sessions were thought-provoking giving me more questions about who this God really is and what He has to offer, helping me to become more open-minded.

Next was O-levels. A few weeks before the release of the O-level results, I had a dream where there was a big “D” on my English paper. I didn’t think much about it at first, but on the day of the O-level results, the dream was fulfilled. I was really depressed but the Sunday of that exact week, Rev Lau was preaching about how he, too, failed his English O-levels. It all seemed too much of a coincidence, and I thought God was showing Himself to me. Lastly, “Finding My Place”, helped me understand the depth of His saving grace in my life. I believed that God was very real and He loved me no matter how many times I tried to run away from Him; He was always there, welcoming me with open arms.

After taking my relationship with God more seriously, God transformed my life substantially, helping me recognise my own sinful nature in my struggle with fame, lust and envy. I can’t thank God enough for everything He has blessed me with like picking up the guitar even though I thought I could not back then and the wonderful community I found in CRU, SYFC, FYP, TBC together with my friends, allowing me to see that God loves me wholeheartedly and that He died on the cross for you and me.

KWA ENG KIAT

I grew up in a non-Christian home but, during my Secondary school days at Tg Katong Sec Technical School, was fortunate to be invited by a classmate to attend a YFC (Youth For Christ) Katong Club meeting. It was there that I first heard the Gospel and accepted Christ as my Lord and Saviour when I was 15 years old. I participated actively in YFC activities and was baptised at Bethesda Katong Church.

Later, in my early adult life, work took centre stage and I backslided. Life was going well for our family then, together with Doreen, and we were blessed with three wonderful children.

However, in 2005, we were dealt a devastating shock when we lost our only daughter to leukemia. She went home to the Lord just two days short of her 18th birthday. Our world came crashing down, and that was the darkest period of our lives.

God, however, did not forsake us. He sent a Christian doctor who treated our daughter and ministered to us, and there were also church friends who came alongside us to comfort and support us. During this time, we immersed ourselves in overseas mission trips. We realised how unpredictable life is, sensed God’s prompting, and decided to dedicate ourselves to serving others wherever He would lead us.

In 2014, Doreen and I quit our jobs and went to Cambodia as full-time volunteer mission workers. We spent one and a half years there, serving with two NGOs helping with a school construction project and setting up a dormitory and café to house 13 orphaned Cambodian youths from an orphanage in Prey Veng province.

We became house parents to these youths, helping them find jobs and enrolling them in universities in Phnom Penh. These are our Cambodian children they call us Papa and Mama. Many of them are now married, holding steady jobs, and raising families of their own. We remain in regular contact with them. Praise the Lord for His protection and blessings upon them and the nation of Cambodia.

We will continue serving in missions with FMC, as this is God’s will and plan for our lives. All we need to do is to keep our faith and trust in Him in everything we do. What keeps me going is this saying: “The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose.” I pray that each of us will seek God’s will and purpose for our lives and commit ourselves to follow Him.

DOREEN LAU

I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour in 1972, at a gospel really at Toa Payoh Methodist Church. The message that evening spoke about God’s love and forgiveness, and I felt a strong conviction in my heart that God was calling me personally. I went forward and received Christ into my life, and that was the beginning of my walk with Him.

Over the years, I experienced both joys and trials, but God has always been faithful. When I went through a deep season of loss and grief over the passing of my daughter, it was only God’s grace and comfort that I could stand again. He has truly been my strength, my comforter, and my provider through all seasons of life.

After moving to my new home, I began attending FMC and was warmly welcomed by the congregation. From the very first visit, I could feel the love, joy and fellowship among the members. The worship services, messages and caring community have deeply encouraged me to draw closer to God and to serve Him with a sincere heart. I am thankful to be part of this spiritual family where I can continue to grow in faith amd serve together with fellow believers.

I pray that God will continue to use FMC as a light in the community and that I may be a blessing to others through His love and grace. To God be the glory.

Discussion Questions

1. A wrench in the plan

Joseph’s plans were suddenly disrupted. Can you recall a time when something important in your life did not go according to plan? How did you initially respond? When plans fall apart, what are some ways we tend to take matters into our own hands rather than bringing them to God?

2. An invitation to God’s plan

The angel does not remove Joseph’s difficulty but reframes it. What does this tell us about how God often works in our circumstances? How does knowing that God is “with us” change the way we view difficult or uncertain seasons?

3. Responding to a better plan

Joseph responds with obedience even though many questions remain unanswered. Are there areas in your life right now where God may be inviting you to lean on Him rather than control the outcome? What might obedience look like in that area?
