Discussion Questions
1. God gave Adam and Eve one single command about not eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He also gave the Israelites the food laws of Leviticus 11, a straightforward list of may-eats and may-not-eats. This was the way God’s people were to discipline their eating to be holy like he is.
But in Mark 7:15 Jesus said, “There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”
What was Jesus saying about true holiness? Why is his standard of holiness higher than the one described in Leviticus 11?
2. In the Old Testament, God gave these laws after he delivered them from Egypt. As his chosen, beloved, rescued people, this was how they were to live. But the Jews misunderstood that they were earning God’s favour for them and practiced a legalistic faith.
In the same way, God has given us a great commandment, a great commission, and the example of Jesus to follow after. But these are given to Christians who have been saved through faith in Jesus.
What is the purpose of the commandments of God for his people today? Why do you think so many of us fall into legalism, a faith of godly appearances and not true devotion?

Obedience is saying “no” to yourself, and saying “yes” to God. In other words, in saying “yes” to yourself, you are saying “no” God. What are some areas that God is telling you to say “no” to, to practice self denial and discipline, to grow in holiness?
