SERMON NOTES

Scripture: : Leviticus 4:1-12, 5:14-16, 6:1-7

Discussion Questions

1. The term “atonement,” is found but once in the first 3 chapters of Leviticus (1:4), but 9 times in chapters 4 and 5. The terms “guilt” and “guilty” are not found in chapters 1-3, but are each found 9 times in chapters 4 and 5. Chapters 1-3 are more concerned with the process of the sacrifice, while chapters 4-6 have more emphasis on the product of the process forgiveness (not found once in chapters 1-3, 8 times in chapters 4 & 5).

What does this tell you about how God views sin and his desire for his people? Why should we see the sacrificial system as an expression of God’s grace and mercy?

2. The sin offering is for the atonement of “unintentional sins”. The opposite of that would be intentional, deliberate sin. In what way do we deliberately sin?

According to Hebrews 10: 26-27, if we sin deliberately, there is no longer a sacrifice for sins, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire. Read the rest of Hebrews 10, and reflect on where the confidence of a believer lies. How does this affect the way we live in our daily lives?

3. The guilt offering is unique in that a restitution, a repayment of an additional 20%, is stipulated on top of the animal offering. But our sins can’t always be calculated in monetary terms, so how should we go about making “restitution” for sins that hurt others in non-measurable ways (for example, emotional hurts)?
