1 Message from the Head of School

Fontbonne Across the Map

Dear Fontbonne Community,

As we embark on our 70th anniversary year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the journey we have shared and the bright future we are forging together. This milestone allows us to reflect on our rich tradition while looking forward with renewed vigor in the work of igniting the future for all young women.

In celebrating seven decades of excellence, we honor our legacy of empowering young women to be servant leaders and scholars. We pay tribute to the remarkable women who have walked these halls, embodying the values of leadership, service, and academic excellence; characteristics of a Fontbonne Women of Courage. These values are deeply rooted in the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, whose spirit of loving the dear neighbor without distinction continues to inspire and guide us.

This year marks an exciting chapter in our history. We were thrilled to launch the Patricia Cerasuolo Girls’ Leadership Institute this past March, designed to ensure every woman receives the leadership training they need to become our future leaders. Additionally, our dual enrollment program with Syracuse University and the advancement of our curriculum through the Mary McCready Center for Math Excellence will provide our students with unparalleled academic opportunities. The renovation of our classrooms and the opening of the Medaille Center are testaments to our commitment to accommodating our growing student body and enhancing their educational experience.

Our progress and achievements would not be possible without the unwavering support of our donors, alumnae, friends, and families. Your generosity fuels our dreams and ensures that we can continue to ignite the future for young women. As we envision the next 70 years, we are inspired by the words of Harriet Beecher Stowe that “women are the real architects of society”. Fontbonne’s mission of educating young women in an inclusive environment inspires these architects.

To celebrate this significant milestone and honor the achievements of our Women of Courage who have paved the way for future generations, we invite you to join us at the 70th Anniversary Gala on March 29, 2025. This special event will be an opportunity to recognize the incredible contributions of Fontbonne women and to celebrate our shared commitment to empowering young girls.

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Together, we will continue to honor our past, embrace the present, and ignite the future where our women thrive as leaders and change-makers.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Honoring Tradition Igniting Tomorrow

Reunion Weekend

Fontbonne hosted a vibrant and memorable Reunion Weekend, honoring alumnae from classes ending in a 4 or 9. On May 30 and 31, graduates from the classes of 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019, and earlier classes from 1979, 1984, 1989, and 1994 gathered at the Waterclub Marina Bay for two evenings of joy, connection, and celebration. The energy was palpable, with the beautiful weather adding to the festive atmosphere. It was heartwarming to witness the enduring bonds formed during their years at Fontbonne, as alumnae reconnected, shared stories, and celebrated their achievements. The weekend highlighted not only the strength of their sisterhood but also the remarkable milestone of staying connected for decades.

The celebration continued on June 1, with a Golden Alumnae brunch for the classes of 1959, 1964, and 1969, held in the newly renamed Medaille Center. This event brought together generations of Fontbonne women, as five current students joined the alumnae, creating a bridge between past and present. Later that evening, members of the Class of 1974 gathered to commemorate their 50th reunion in the CSJ Foyer, a setting filled with laughter, memories, and hugs. The weekend culminated with an All-Alumnae Mass and Awards Ceremony on June 2, where four distinguished graduates were honored: Mary K. Ames ‘74 received the Woman of Courage Award, Larissa Cook ‘99 was named Distinguished Alumna, Morjieta Derisier ‘04 was recognized as Dear Neighbor, and Emma Flynn ‘19 was celebrated as Distinguished Young Alumna. This Reunion Weekend was a true testament to the lasting impact of a Fontbonne education and the deep connections it fosters across generations.

Letter from the Board Chair

Dear Fontbonne Family,

I have had the privilege of being part of the Fontbonne family since my daughter, Cherina, entered as a freshwoman in 2003. When I joined the Board of Trustees, and then became the first woman of color to serve as Chair of the Board earlier this year, I made a deeper commitment to advance the school’s mission and the work that we do on behalf of our young women.

I’ve always believed and been guided by the principle that all young people should be provided the opportunities they deserve in order to live the life they imagine. This is particularly true for girls, and how blessed we are that Fontbonne has done that for thousands of women over the last 70 years – and counting.

Research* has proven that all-girls schools are distinctively preparing students for success in college and beyond. When compared to their female peers at coeducational schools, girls’ school graduates have stronger academic skills, are more academically engaged, demonstrate higher science self-confidence, express stronger community involvement, display higher levels of cultural competency, and exhibit increased political engagement.

Coupled with our Catholic identity and deep connection to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Fontbonne fosters Gospel values, merging faith, academics and leadership to produce graduates who are equipped with the skills and characteristics to thrive as exceptional students and even better human beings. My daughter is the first in our family to hold three degrees and I credit Fontbonne for providing her the education she needed to become a successful woman of courage.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you to all of our valued donors, alumnae, advisors, partners and the greater school community. Together we are building a brighter future not only for our students, but for our society. Fontbonne women have a profound impact on all they encounter as they confidently take an active role in the world around them.

Thank you for providing this life changing opportunity to so many.

Sincerely,

Denella J. Clark, P’07

Chairwoman, Fontbonne Board of Trustees

Consider Becoming a Member of the Forever Fontbonne Society

Did you know, gifts from your estate make a profound and enduring difference on our mission? And the even better news is, there are really simple ways to set up a planned gift, like including Fontbonne in your will, or naming the school as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement account. Please consider this impactful form of giving today.

If you’d like more information please call our Mission Advancement office at 617-615-3029 or reach out to your own financial planner for advice. And, of course, if you’ve already included Fontbonne in your estate plans, please let us know. We’d love the opportunity to thank you and recognize you as a member of the Forever Fontbonne Society to inspire others to do the same.

The Patricia Cerasuolo Girls’ Leadership Institute

The Patricia Cerasuolo Girls’ Leadership Institute at Fontbonne in Milton, MA, is a transformative program designed to empower young women with the leadership skills needed to thrive in today’s world. The Institute offers a comprehensive curriculum that incorporates leadership training at every grade level, ensuring that students develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose as they progress through their educational journey.

Through the Girls Leadership Conference, students engage in workshops and activities that inspire them to lead with integrity and vision. The Alumnae mentoring program connects current students with successful Fontbonne graduates, providing guidance and real-world insights that help shape their future aspirations. For younger students in the 7th and 8th grades, sister talks foster a sense of community and belonging, encouraging them to explore their leadership potential early on. Additionally, career speakers and field trips offer valuable exposure to diverse professional paths, further expanding students’ understanding of the possibilities that lie ahead.

The impact of the Patricia Cerasuolo Girls’ Leadership Institute is profound, as it equips young women with the tools they need to become leaders in their communities and beyond. By cultivating essential leadership skills, fostering mentorship, and providing opportunities for growth, the Institute plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of female leaders who are ready to make a difference in the world.

“ When a candle lights another candle, it loses nothing.”
FARAH BERNIER ‘98, KEYNOTE SPEAKER PCGLIC

The Patricia Cerasuolo Girls’ Leadership Institute Conference at Fontbonne, held on March 1, 2024, was a dynamic event designed to inspire and empower young women at every stage of their educational journey. The conference featured Farah Bernier, a distinguished member of the Class of 1998, as the keynote speaker. She captivated the audience with her powerful message of shared leadership, emphasizing that “when a candle lights another candle, it loses nothing”. Her words resonated deeply, encouraging the students to lead with generosity and support one another in their personal and professional growth.

PCGLI Conference: Harnessing Your Power

An engaging alumnae panel featured Véronique Daphnis Chisholm ‘07, Cherina Clark Wright ‘07, Margaret DeMoura MAHS ‘10, Tammy Chen ‘13, and Julie Montminy ‘15. These accomplished women shared their experiences and insights, offering valuable advice to the current generation of Fontbonne leaders. Lunchtime provided an additional opportunity for students to connect with graduates through intimate discussions at alumnae lunch tables, where they received personalized mentorship and career guidance.

The day was structured with age-appropriate activities tailored to each grade level, ensuring that every student could benefit from the experience. For grades 7 and 8, the focus was on relationship and mission building, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Ninth graders explored servant leadership and the importance of gratitude in leadership roles. Tenth graders participated in a handson Rube Goldberg machine activity, which highlighted the significance of collaboration and teamwork in effective leadership. Eleventh graders honed their resume-building and interview skills, preparing them for future academic and professional opportunities. Seniors delved into financial literacy, equipping them with essential knowledge for managing their futures with confidence and wisdom. This comprehensive approach to leadership development reflects the core mission of the Patricia Cerasuolo Girls’ Leadership Institute, nurturing the potential of each student and guiding them toward becoming confident, compassionate, and capable leaders.

Academics

National Merit Scholars are recognized as top academic achievers in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program, which stems from exceptional performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This program identifies high school students who score in the top percentile nationwide, honoring their dedication to academic excellence.

Fontbonne is proud to have three Commended Scholars in the National Merit Scholarship Competition in the Class of 2024, celebrating their outstanding achievements and commitment to academic success.

Fontbonne’s French Exchange Program offers students a transformative opportunity to deepen their understanding of French language, culture, and global connections. Partnering with a Sister school in France, the program includes immersive experiences such as living with host families, attending local schools, and exploring historical and cultural landmarks. Students enhance their linguistic skills and develop meaningful relationships that foster crosscultural appreciation. Likewise, Fontbonne hosts French students, providing a reciprocal exchange that enriches the entire school community. This program reflects Fontbonne’s commitment to global education, empowering students to become compassionate, informed, and culturally competent leaders. The connection to our CSJ Mission in Lyon, France is an incredible experience for our young women.

This recognition reflects Fontbonne’s dedication to living its mission by fostering young women of service and leadership in all areas of their lives. Our athletes participate in programs such as the MIAA’s Women in Sports Leadership Days and leadership training, which further emphasize the development of women leaders both on and off the field.

Additionally, we are proud to celebrate Ava Donoghue ‘24, who received two outstanding honors: the Scholar-Athlete Award for Basketball and the Coaches Award for Basketball by the Massachusetts Basketball Association. Ava exemplifies the balance of academic excellence and athletic dedication that is core to the Fontbonne experience. These achievements underscore our commitment to cultivating scholar-athletes and empowering the next generation of leaders.

Social Justice

Fontbonne hosts an annual Senior Social Justice Fair, where students present their Social Justice Projects. These projects are a culmination of their studies and reflect their commitment to Catholic Social Justice Teaching, emphasizing human dignity, solidarity, and the call to serve others. Each project showcases the students’ deep understanding of societal issues and their responsibility to act as advocates for change, embodying the values of compassion, justice, and the common good. The fair is a testament to Fontbonne’s dedication to fostering socially conscious leaders who are equipped to make a positive impact in the world.

Visual Arts

Last spring, Fontbonne hosted a Celebration of the Arts, where students from AP Art and AP 2D Design displayed their year-long projects. Students experimented with materials and mediums – such as acrylic paints, watercolors, pencil drawings, photography, and digital art – as they pursued a sustained investigation question, the unifying theme of all their pieces. The Fontbonne community and guests were invited to view each artist’s work and learn about the development of their projects throughout the year.

CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS

Last March, Sophie Minihane ‘25 (left) and Caroline Wosny ‘25 (right) were accepted to the Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artist Recognition Exhibit. This is a juried art show for Massachusetts students in Grades 9-12. This show provides students with a real life opportunity to express what is important to them in a visually powerful way.

Performing Arts

Fontbonne’s Good Fountain Players showcased their theatrical talents with two dynamic productions during the 2023-2024 academic year. In the fall, they delighted audiences with Puffs, a witty and heartfelt play that reimagines the story of a group of magical students often overlooked in a well-loved wizarding world. In the spring, they brought the vibrant and imaginative world of Bikini Bottom to life with SpongeBob The Musical, captivating audiences with energetic performances, colorful staging, and inspiring themes of friendship and resilience. These productions highlighted the creativity and dedication of Fontbonne’s talented cast and crew.

Puffs!

The GFPs had a blast performing Puffs! This clever and inventive play “never goes more than a minute without a laugh.” Described as hilariously heartfelt, this show is an epic journey that takes a classic story to new places. Puffs is the story of Wayne Hopkins, a regular boy who discovers he’s a wizard and goes to school in England, where he makes two best friends and has adventures. This perhaps sounds familiar. But Wayne is sorted as a Puff (i.e. Hufflepuff). He and the other Puffs simply want to learn how to be wizards and avoid attacks by evil wizards. This show delighted audiences of all ages and made everyone laugh out loud!

SpongeBob The Musical

The stakes were higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom faced the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupted! Lives hung in the balance! And just when all hope seemed lost, a most unexpected hero rose up and took center stage! Audiences were captivated as they followed along with Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, and others on this hilarious and heartfelt adventure under the sea!
