Short documentary is on the rise: there are the KET&DOC films that impress outside of Belgium too, but other documentary makers also deliberately opt for the short format. Small but deeply moving stories, fun anecdotes or short but accurate portraits, the competition for short documentary films is a mosaic window on the world.

De korte documentaire is aan een opmars bezig: er zijn de KET&DOC films die ook buiten België hoge toppen scheren, maar ook andere documentairemakers kiezen doelbewust voor het korte formaat. Kleine maar diep ontroerende verhalen, leuke anekdotes of korte maar trefzekere portretten, de competitie voor korte documentairefilms is een venster op de wereld in mozaïek.
Boos
Frederike Migom • Belgium • 2020 • 15 min. Children can be angry or aggressive at times. Sometimes it gets so bad that the situation at home or at school can not go on any longer. Often these children are labeled as naughty or unmanageable, but is that really the case? We meet these children in the psychiatry department of a children's hospital. Sommige kinderen kunnen al eens boos of agressief uit de hoek komen. Soms zo erg dat de situatie thuis of op school niet meer vol te houden is. Vaak worden deze kinderen als stout of onhandelbaar bestempeld, maar is dat wel zo? We ontmoeten deze kinderen op de psychiatrie afdeling van een kinderziekenhuis.

Een verslag over de terugkeer naar Peking van een kunststudent die al 10 jaar in het buitenland woont. Het verblijf bij haar familie laat genadeloos zien hoe ontworteld ze is van haar thuisland door haar leven in het buitenland.

Looking back on their upbringing there, their visits and their move, they create a beautiful picture of their experience of the island. However, inevitably they start asking some questions.
Een sfeervolle weergave van de connectie die de drie vrienden Maria, Markos en Julian delen met hetzelfde eiland in Griekenland. Door terug te blikken op hun opvoeding daar, hun bezoekjes en hun verhuis scheppen ze een mooi beeld van hun beleving van het eiland. Dit kan echter niet zonder zich ook wat vragen te stellen.

Mattias Bavré • Belgium • 2021 • 21 min. Adam and Piotr are two brothers who live in an institution located in a castle in the Polish mountains. They have been abandoned by their mother, so they rely heavily on each other. They spend their days trading mushrooms for cigarettes and going to church.
Adam en Piotr zijn twee broers die in een instelling in een kasteel leven in de Poolse bergen. Ze zijn in de steek gelaten door hun moeder, waardoor ze hard op elkaar rekenen. Ze spenderen hun dagen door paddenstoelen te ruilen voor sigaretten en naar de kerk te gaan.

When she tells her son Charly about her latest suicide attempt, he reacts with anger rather than compassion. Caught between the need for new opportunities and the fear of confrontation, they try to save the family ties.
Valerie is al jaren verslaafd aan medicijnen. Wanneer ze haar zoon Charly vertelt over haar laatste zelfmoordpoging, reageert hij eerder boos dan meelevend. Gevangen tussen nood aan nieuwe kansen en angst voor confrontatie proberen ze de familiebanden te redden.

Ten-year-old Yaren leaves for summer camp. She's a bit nervous, because it's not a normal camp. It is a camp for children who have lost an important person in their life. At the camp she meets enthusiastic daredevil Kato. The beginning of a special summer and an equally special friendship.
De tienjarige Yaren vertrekt op zomerkamp. Ze is wat nerveus, want het is geen normaal kamp. Het is een kamp voor kinderen die een belangrijk persoon in hun leven hebben verloren. Op het kamp ontmoet ze de enthousiaste waaghals Kato. Het begin van een speciale zomer en een al even speciale vriendschap.
