Belgian selection DOCVILLE presents the ten best Belgian documentaries of the past year. Films that capture special places in our country, such as a small pigsty or an operating room where hypnosis is used, but also films that look beyond national borders and zoom in on, for example, Iceland, Congo, Ireland or Turkey. Documentaries made by familiar faces or by young newcomers. The strongest film will be announced the winner of the Jury Prize for Best Belgian Documentary.

EN My Voice Will Be With You Hypnosis as anesthesia. It not only speaks to our imagination, it is already happening in practice, even in Belgium. We follow two renowned Belgian specialists in surgical hypnosis and are given an insight into their special method in which their voice, together with the power of the imagination, can take patients beyond the operating room and the pain.

Omar Blondin Diop, a Maoist student from Niger, starred in Jean-Luc Godard’s La Chinoise in the 1960s. Fifty years after this almost prophetic cult film, Vincent Meessen supplements the fiction with a film essay. In the shadow of the Icelandic volcano Katla lies the village of Vík í Myrdal. The villagers have been trying to understand the lurking danger for centuries. Despite signs of increased activity, Katla attracts tourists from all over the world and has become a source of income.

This change in the almost mystical relationship between the villagers and the volcano creates friction within the community. Heimaland delves into the ambiguity of a community that, in its quest for wealth, becomes alienated from its own environment.

A Parked Life offers a multicolored view of the European continent, from the simmering deserts of Spain to the frozen north of Norway.

New Pigs on the Block

Luc, Mia and Anja are three pigs who are part of a social neighborhood project. On a small piece of no man’s land they process the food surpluses from the neighborhood. A noble initiative that starts out for as a bit of heaven on earth for the pigs. But as the seasons progress, the fairy tale becomes more and more grim.

The camera brings us up to eye level with Luc, Mia and Anja and also observes human beings alongside them. New Pigs on the Block is a tenderly confrontational film that shows the ambiguous relationship between humans and animals in an unseen way.

Four Seasons in One Day

Every day the Carlingford ferry takes people back and forth between Northern Ireland and Ireland. The border hides deep in the sea, invisible to passengers on the boat. During the short trip across the high seas, various stories, thoughts and musings emerge. A kaleidoscopic story based on how an imaginary line is reflected in people’s everyday lives and thoughts.

International selection Following a strict selection, DOCVILLE nominated ten brand new author documentaries that represent what the festival stands for: excellent documentaries that are not only strong in content, but also have an eye for the visual aspect and therefore deserve a place on the big screen. The best film is awarded the Canvas Jury Prize and can start dreaming of an Oscar, because the winner of this competition gets a spot on the long list of the Academy Awards.

My Old School

16-year-old Brandon Lee seems like a model student: good grades, nice to everyone and a real star on the school stage. Only he’s not who he claims to be. How far would you go for a second chance to make your dream come true? Who is Brandon Lee really? And why did he pretend to be someone else? Trenches and stylized black and white photography. It feels as if we are being catapulted back to the last century, but alas. Since 2014, Ukrainian soldiers have been fighting pro-Russian separatists while diplomats - nowhere near the frontlines - negotiate precarious ceasefires. Experienced war journalist and photographer Loup Bureau spent months documenting life in the Ukrainian trenches just a few miles from their enemy.

Deep in the Amazon jungle, Henrik, a former Danish soldier, tries to find relief from his post-traumatic stress disorder. After being let down by the classical treatments, he has withdrawn to the jungle all by himself.

A Marble Travelogue

The result: one of the largest and bloodiest protests the countr y has ever seen. Behind the scenes, those in power plan the suppression and subsequent cover-up of the protest. Recently rediscovered telephone recordings are combined with stop-motion animation, forming a particularly original and, above all, exciting portrait of a power crisis.
