COMPETITIE & JURY

This year, DOCVILLE is happy to present three different awards: the CANVAS Jury Prize goes to the best international film and the Jury Prize rewards the best Belgian film. The third prize is the Con-Science Jury Prize. Every competition has its own jury: a dele­gation of nine national and international film professi­onals will decide who can take a prize home.

Er worden maar liefst drie prijzen uitgereikt: de ‘Canvas Juryprijs’ gaat naar de beste film uit de Internationale Selectie, de Juryprijs wordt toegekend aan de Beste Belgische Documentaire en ook dit jaar wordt de Weten & Geweten Prijs uitgereikt. Iedere competitie heeft zijn eigen jury: een delegatie van 9 nationale en internationale filmprofessionals beslist wie met een prijs naar huis gaat.

REMKO SCHNORR (NL) worked as a DOP for short films, commercials, music videos, documentaries and feature films. His work includes films like ‘Pluk van de Petteflet’, ‘The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema’ and ‘Mussels in Love’, which is selected as a Festival Favorite.

REMKO SCHNORR (NL) werkte als DOP mee aan tal van kortfilms, commercials, videoclips, documentaires en langspeelfilms. Op zijn curriculum staan films als ‘Pluk van de Petteflet’, ‘The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema’ en ‘L’Amour des Moules’, die voor de Festival Favorites geselecteerd werd.

ELLEN DE WAELE (BE) founded Serendipity Films in 2006, a production company focused on author’s documentaries, feature films and short films by upcoming film ma­kers. The company produced ‘Grande Hotel’, selected for DOCVILLE in 2011, as well as the short film ‘Death of a Shadow’, nominated for an Oscar in 2013.

ELLEN DE WAELE (BE) richtte in 2006 Serendipity Films op, een productiehuis gespecialiseerd in auteursdocumentaires, langspeelfilms en kortfilms van jong talent. Ze stond in 2011 op DOCVILLE met ‘Grande Hotel’, de kortfilm ‘Dood van een Schaduw’ werd genomineerd voor een Oscar.

DAVID WILSON (US) Director, producer and cinemato­ grapher. Cofounded the True/False Film Festival, with Paul Sturtz, in 2004. It is currently one of the world’s lea­ ding film festivals for the documentary genre. He is closely involved with the Sundance Film Festival’s film selection.

DAVID WILSON (US) Regisseur, producent, cinematograaf.

Richtte in 2004 samen met Paul Sturtz het True/False Film Festival op, één van de toonaangevende filmfestivals voor documentaire. Daarnaast is hij ook nauw betrokken bij de programmatie van het Sundance Film Festival.

The jury for the International Competition consists of: TOM BLEYAERT (BE) graduated as master in Politics and Social Science from the University Ghent. Started working for the national broadcaster VRT in 2000 at the sports department. Since 2001 he is responsible for the purchase of international documentaries for CANVAS.

TOM BLEYAERT (BE) studeerde Politieke en Sociale Wetenschappen en Communicatiewetenschappen aan de RUG. Hij werkt sinds 2000 voor VRT, aanvankelijk voor de afdeling Sport, sinds 2001 is hij verantwoordelijk voor de aankoop van buitenlandse documentaires voor CANVAS.

DIMITRI VAN ZEEBROECK (BE) is a freelance photographer and journalist whose work appears in several

ANNE VIERHOUT (NL) is the managing director of Cinema Delicatessen, a distribution company specialized in documentary films. Before this, she worked at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and as an advisor for Screen New South Wales in Australia.

She has worked for the news, ‘Panorama’ and ‘Terzake’, hosted entertainment shows such as ‘De Laatste Show’ and ‘De Klas van Frieda’ and interviewed world-renowned leading figures for ‘Spraakmakers’.

CULLEN HOBACK (US) is a filmmaker whose past works include the much acclaimed ‘Monster Camp’, ‘FrICTION’ and most recently ‘Terms and Conditions May Apply’ that is part of the SHFT-CTRL programme. He is also an expert at made-to-fit distribution strategies and independent production.

YOUN JI (AT) has been head of sales at Autlook Filmsales since 2009, an Austrian sales agent specialized in documentaries. Her job has taken her to film festivals across the globe. She also organizes pitching forums.

FRIEDA VAN WIJCK (BE) is journaliste en allround presentatrice die haar carrière bij de VRT begon in ’77. Ze werkte onder meer voor ‘Het Journaal’, ‘Panorama’ en ‘Terzake’, presenteerde entertainmentprogramma’s als ‘De Laatste Show’ en ‘De Klas van Frieda’ en interviewde de groten der aarde voor ‘Spraakmakers’.

NL De schilderachtige streek rond Salto di Quirra in Sardinië lijkt op het eerste zicht een robuust stuk onontgonnen natuur. Maar schijn bedriegt: al meer dan 50 jaar doet het gebied dienst als militaire testzone voor bedrijven en regeringen uit de hele wereld. Wie goed kijkt, ziet de letsels van deze decennialange ‘oorlogsvoering’: roestend militair materiaal, verdwaalde kogels, natuurlijke en menselijke ruïnes ontsieren het landschap, nucleaire straling vernietigde alle leven. De winnaars van de Internationale Juryprijs van DOCVILLE 2012 maakten opnieuw een prachtige verstilde film waarin beelden veel meer zeggen dan woorden.

EN Sexual abuse and the Church: it has sadly been a recurring story for several decades now. The Vatican was heavily criticized about the way it responded - or failed to respond - to the many scandals. ‘Mea Maxima Culpa’ takes an American abuse case in a Milwaukee school for the deaf as the starting point to tell a bigger story. For years and anywhere from Ireland to Italy, the Church played priests’ sexual crimes down or did not address them at all. As in his previous films, Oscar winner Alex Gibney tells a big story about abuse and corruption from a personal point of view.

Het Vaticaan kreeg heel wat kritiek over de manier waarop er gerea­geerd werd (of niet) op de schandalen. ‘Mea Maxima Culpa’ vertrekt vanuit een Amerikaans misbruikverhaal in een dovenschool in Milwaukee en zoomt vandaar uit naar een breder kader: hoe de Kerk jarenlang de seksuele misdragingen van priesters bagatelliseerde of domweg verzweeg, van Ierland tot Italië. Oscarwinnaar Alex Gibney vertelt, net als in zijn vorig werk, via een persoonlijke insteek een breed verhaal over misbruik en corruptie.

EN On May 25th, the world renowned Ballet de l’Opéra National de Paris performed its first choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, ‘Rain’. It proved a difficult task to translate her dance language to the classically trained ballet dan­ cers. Ballet’s rigidity had to be replaced by a different kind of severity: the mathe­ matical formula of ‘Rain’, which hides several complex layers of emotions. This poetic documentary allows for a unique look behind the scenes of the production.

Like in his previous documentary ‘Dimanches’, he romanticises the nostaliga and paints a beautiful picture thanks to his picturesque cinematography.

EN Texas, 1994. Thirteen-year old Nicholas Barclay, who has brown eyes and dark hair, leaves the house to play basketball, never to return. Several years later, a confused young man shows up in Spain. He speaks English with a thick French accent and has blue eyes and blonde hair. Nonetheless, the family embraces the boy as ‘their’ Nicolas. Even Spanish and American authorities (including the FBI) support this bizarre story. What is going on? Director Bart Layton explains the puzzle piece by piece, keeping the audience at the edge of their seats during the entire film.

EN Every year, Pascal (53) and Carole (28) gather their three donkeys, four dogs and eight hundred sheep to embark on a four-month winter hike through the mountains of Switzerland and France. During this ‘transhumance’ they fight their way through the barren landscape, trying to find nutritious meadows for the sheep. Their search is complicated by the urbanification. Each year more grass has been taken over by houses, train tracks and industrial zones. ‘Winter nomads’ is a melancholy roadmovie, with beautiful images of a stunning landscape that is slowly shrinking.

EN A day out on the sea from hell would be the most accurate description of this film. Hell in this case is a fishing boat, manned by tough sailors, where blood flows and fish heads turn the deck slippery. ‘Leviathan’, which has been called a horror documentary, is an almost physical assault on your senses. The water roars, the ropes creak, metal pulleys clang and the boat is never still. The images are claustrophobic, dark and sinister, poetic and at times almost abstract. This unique subjective, poetic and at the same time harsh and brutal documentary is something you have never seen before.

They care about freedom, not money. In a dark, Scandinavian style similar to the Millennium trilogy, director Simon Klose paints a portrait of these digital pirates. Even lijkt er een carrière als wereldster in de maak, maar de zachtaardige, soms wat tegendraadse Whitley weigert mee te spelen in het commerciële circus dat de muziekbusiness is en gaat eigenzinnig zijn eigen weg. Grote rijkdom levert het hem niet op, wel een ware cultstatus en het eeuwige respect van de groten der aarde.

EN They call her the Dutch Norah Jones. She discovered her musical ambitions playing the piano in her parents’ restaurant. Karsu’s unique singing style, which combines Turkish influences with slow jazz, has made her a star in the international jazz scene. But young Karsu is not about to let that get to her head. Before conquering the stage, she wants to graduate from high school, an accomplishment her parents feel very strongly about. ‘Karsu’ is a subtle, rhythmically edited coming-of-age film about an ordinary girl with an extraordinary gift.

Director Sander Vandenbroucke talked to experts, including the former bicycle mayor of Copenhagen, in hopes of gathering fresh ideas to improve the current situation.

EXPECTING EN Afghan Jawed and Dashurije from Kosovo both left their native countries in search of a better life. They have been leaning on each other, during their long struggle to obtain a residence permit. Their battle for survival takes an unexpected turn when Dashurije discovers she is pregnant. Following a hunger strike, Jawed is allowed to stay in Belgium for six months. But his euphoria soon cools when the hospital bill arrives.

FEMME DE LA RUE EN Two years ago, Sofie Peeters moved to Brussels. To her surprise, she was confronted with a sexist phenomenon anytime she walked around outside. Every day men talked down to her, tried to hit on her or simply yelled abusive language. She decided to pick up her camera and find out what this phenomenon does to women, how they deal with it and where it comes from.

‘Femme de la Rue’, sparked a media debate.

NL Twee jaar geleden verhuisde Sofie Peeters naar Brussel. Ze werd er op straat onverwacht geconfronteerd met een seksistisch fenomeen: dagelijks werd ze denigrerend aangesproken, goedkoop versierd of uitgescholden door onbekende mannen.

Ze besloot met de camera in de hand op zoek te gaan naar wat dit fenomeen met vrouwen doet, hoe ze ermee omgaan en waar het vandaan komt. ‘Femme de la rue’ weekte heel wat reacties los in de media.

SEEKING REFUGE - DRAWING FOR MEMORY EN During the war in Afghanistan, Ali, now ten, fled the country with his grandmother, leaving behind his parents who were unable to leave. This film explores his pain of being separated from them, as well as living for years without knowing whether they were alive. Despite now having contact with them, they are still unable to be united, and Ali describes his hopes of one day seeing them again.

NL Tijdens de oorlog vluchtte de nu 10-jarige Ali met zijn grootmoeder uit Afghanistan. Zijn ouders konden niet mee vertrekken en bleven achter. SEEKING REFUGE - I’LL STOP CRYING IF YOU STOP CRYING EN Hamid, aged ten, is from Eritrea, but fled to the UK with his mother when he was seven. Having to leave behind his father who was later killed, Hamid describes the struggles of coming to terms with his father’s death, as well as settling into a new country.

SEEKING REFUGE - PLEASE DON’T LET ME GO EN Juliane spent years in a Zimbabwean orphanage, being fed barely as well as experiencing bullying from the other children. Now 12, she describes the suffering she endured before being reunited with her mother. Escaping together to the UK, Juliane continues to suffer from the effects of being separated from her mother at a young age, but is supported by her school who is helping her to deal with her experiences.

NL Juliane verbleef jaren in een Zimbabwaans weeshuis waar ze amper gevoed werd en voortdurend gepest door de grotere kinderen. Nu is ze 12 jaar en verenigd met haar moeder. Ze vluchtten samen naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar Juliane lijdt nog steeds onder de jarenlange scheiding met haar moeder.

Gelukkig helpt haar school haar op weg om het verleden een plaats te geven.

SEEKING REFUGE - THE LONG WAY HOME EN When Navid’s father’s life was in danger, he fled their home in Iran and came to the UK. As it became increasingly unsafe for him and his mother to be there, Navid and his mother also left, and travelled the long journey to England, mostly overland. Now aged 16, Navid reflects on how it felt having to leave his country when he was five, the difficult journey him and his mother took, as well as what it was like seeing his father again for the first time in years.

NL Toen zijn leven op het spel stond, vluchtte Navids vader uit Iran. Geleidelijk werd het ook voor Navid en zijn moeder te gevaarlijk om nog langer te blijven en ze ondernamen de lange reis naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Op 16-jarige leeftijd blikt Navid terug op hoe het was om als 5-jarige alles achter te laten, op de moeilijke reis die hij en zijn moeder maakten en op hoe het was om zijn vader na al die jaren terug te zien.

The regular price per ticket is 7 euro.

The festival centre is located in the Arts center STUK (Naamsestraat 96). Here you can find the ticket office, information desk and three screening venues: Cinema ZED, Labozaal and Soetezaal.

There are several discount formulas: the ZES X ZED CARD is valid for all DOCVILLE-screenings. The card costs only 33 euro and is equivalent to 6 admission tickets.

The card is not strictly personal and can be used throug­hout the entire season in Cinema Zed. The STUK CARD, CULTURE CARD, PUPIL AND TEACHERS CARD gives you a discount as well: tickets cost 5,5 euro.

From the E40 highway Brussels - Luik: Take exit 22 [Leuven]. A sharp turn takes you to route E314. Immediately take the first exit [Exit 15: Leuven].

This will take you to the Koning Boudewijnlaan. Follow this four lane road and pass the first set of lights. After the second set of lights, you will reach a viaduct. Just before the viaduct, turn right. You are now on the ring road around Leuven. Follow the ring until Naamsepoort. Turn left at the lights, into a street named Naamsestraat. STUK is located at number 96, on the left side of the street.

From the E314 highway Hasselt - Leuven: Take exit 15 [Leuven]. This will take you to the Koning Boudewijnlaan. Follow this road. After the second set of ligths, you will reach a viaduct. Just before the viaduct, turn right.

You are now on the ring road around Leuven. Follow the ring until Naamsepoort. Turn left at the lights, into Naamsestraat.

STUK is located at number 96, on the left side of the street.

PARKING Take the ring road around Leuven and turn into Naamsestraat. The H. Hart parking lot is located on the left side of the street, across from the H.Hart hospital. Other parking lots are indicated on the map on p. 118.

Het festivalcentrum bevindt zich in Kunstencentrum STUK (Naamsestraat 96). Hier vind je de ticketbalie, infobalie, festivalcafé en 3 vertoningslocaties: Cinema ZED, Labozaal en Soetezaal.

De ZESXZED KAART, is ook voor heel DOCVILLE geldig. Deze kost slechts 33 euro en geeft recht op 6 toegangstickets. De kaart is niét strikt persoonlijk en kan ook nadien in Cine­ ma ZED gebruikt worden. Ook met een STUKkaart, Cultuur­ kaart, leerlingen- en lerarenkaart betaal je 5,5 euro per ticket.

WEGBESCHRIJVINGEN Vanuit het station: Stap de Bondgenotenlaan door, richting centrum. U komt op de Grote Markt. Aan je linkerkant zie je het Leuvense stadhuis. Het stadhuis ligt op de hoek van de Grote Markt en de Naamsestraat. Sla dus onmiddellijk nà het stadhuis links af. U bent nu in de Naamsestraat. Het STUK bevindt zich op nummer 96, aan uw rechterkant.

Vanop de E40 Brussel - Luik: Neem afrit 22 (Leuven). Na de scherpe bocht kom je op de E314. Neem onmiddellijk de eerste afrit (Afrit 15: Leuven). U komt op de Koning Boudewijnlaan. Volg deze 4-baansweg. Je passeert 2 lichten. Na de 2e lichten komt u aan een viaduct.

Sla net voor het viaduct rechtsaf. U bevindt zich nu op de ring rond Leuven. U komt uit op de Naamsepoort. Ga aan de lichten linksaf, de Naamsestraat in. Het STUK bevindt zich op nummer 96, aan je linkerkant.

ABOUT LEUVEN

THE ROAD TO LEUVEN

Leuven is a relatively small city (100.000 inhabitants), 20 kilometers near Brussels. Leuven is widely known for two things: it harbours one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe. The K.U.Leuven was founded in 1425 and has more than 25.000 students today.

By plane Leuven is a 20 minute drive from the Brussels National Airport (10 minutes by train). The lowcost airline company, Ryanair, flies to Charleroi from 10 different cities.

Leuven is also the hometown of INBEV, the largest brewery in the world, famous for it’s beer Stella Artois (since 1366), one of the best known (and may we add: best tasting) beers.

Leuven itself was founded in the 11th century and has a fabulous historic city centre (with the magnificent town hall) and a worldwide known Beguinage (officially recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage site). Due to the creative input of students, it always stayed a vivid, young and creative environment. In a city where the historical buildings are only surpassed by the number of pubs and bars (following our last count:180, but it’s possible we’ve missed some) there is always something going on.

Leuven harbours a series of interesting cultural organisations and events. WEBDOX Monday May 6, 2013 Documentaries and digital technologies have never been closer to each other than today. Online tools can offer creative ways to tell your story and interact with your audience, collect and unlock data.

In 2012, the first edition of WebDox took place. In a conference, we informed the audience about interactive webdocumentaries; in subsequent labs, makers could brainstorm and develop projects. WebDox served as an introduction to the possibilities of innovative, digital tools for documentary makers and professionals in new media.

Due to the international response and positive feedback, MEDIA Desk Belgium – Flemish Community, Docville, Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, iDROPS, i-Docs, VRT, Scam/deAuteurs, MEDIA Antenne NRW and other partners decided to organise a sequel. In a similar format, we dig deeper into the topic. WebDox 2013 focuses on the state of the art of the interactive webdocumentaries and on its technical aspects.

WebDox is not intended to make tech experts out of documentary makers and vice versa. We do want to bring both worlds closer, create a notion about how to sharpen a story, reach a public and engage it. How does user behaviour change once tablets are involved?

How can data be collected and retrieved in a creative way? Which software do you use to make an interactive webdocumentary? What are good open source platforms? WebDox will give an answer to these questions. We start with an international conference, after which we go to work in three hands-on labs. Vorig jaar vond tijdens Docville in Leuven WebDox plaats.

In een conferentie informeerden wij het publiek over interactieve webdocumentaires en in de daaropvolgende labs konden makers brainstormen en projecten uitwerken.

WebDox diende als een introductie op de mogelijkheden die innovatieve, digitale middelen aan documentairemakers en professionals in nieuwe media bieden.

Mede door de positieve feedback en grote opkomst uit binnen- en buitenland, breien MEDIA Desk, Docville, Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, iDROPS, i-Docs, VRT, Scam/deAuteurs, MEDIA Antenne Düsseldorf en andere partners hier in 2013 een vervolg aan. In een gelijkaardig format diepen we het onderwerp verder uit. WebDox 2013 focust op de state of the art van de interactieve webdocumentaires en, meer specifiek, op de technische aspecten ervan.

Het is niet de bedoeling om van documentairemakers techneuten te maken en van webprofessionals regisseurs.
