Helping children every day

18 years dedicated to helping children

2017 has been a very special year for Mission Bambini, as it marks 18 years of activity since its foundation. When I think back to the beginning of this adventure, I must admit that I would have never believed we would be able to achieve so much. During all these years we have helped more than 1,350,000 children, giving them the opportunity and the hope of a better life. We soon crossed our national borders and we have gradually reached over 70 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In recent years, however, our help projects have been increasingly focused on the ever growing difficulties encountered by needy families in Italy. The tireless work of our staff and our volunteers has been and still is an invaluable and critical factor of our success. At this point, however, I would like to point out two main aspects of our activity. First and foremost the treatment of children’s heart diseases. Since 2005 we have saved the life of 1,861 children suffering from heart disease, and I mention here the 61th too, as it means one more human life saved. All this is due to our volunteer doctors, who join our missions and perform operations in those countries where sick children live. Furthermore, they take on the task of instructing their local colleagues. This is the added value of our help: we support the development of local medical and auxiliary personnel, with the aim of gradually increasing their autonomy and operating capacity. I would like to share a personal memory that is particularly dear to me: Elvis, the first little heart patient we saved. He underwent a heart operation in Italy, because there were no hospitals in his country suitably equipped for cardiac surgery on children. After recovering from the OP Elvis came to visit us here at headquarters, and when he left he was proudly carrying under his arm the little toy car we had given him: he was the happiest child in the world! Since then we have kept in touch with Elvis: like us, he has just had his eighteenth birthday and he wants to be a farmer in his country, Zimbabwe. The other area of our activity that has increased greatly is providing education to children from 0 to 6 in Italy. We have been working in this field for over a decade opening more than 100 nurseries all over the country. With time we have come to realize that offering opportunities for a good quality education from early childhood can make a real difference for children who are living in underprivileged families and poor environments not only from a material, but also from a cultural point of view. From this experience came the idea of developing a new model of “community nursery”: nurseries, but also preschools, are no longer simple service providers, but rather true points of reference for families, which can support parents in their duties as educators, with the help of the whole community. This model has been recognized as particularly effective, as shown by the important support received by our project “Services 0-6: a Passport to the Future”, financed by the social enterprise “Con i bambini” from the Fund against poor education for young children, which has been created by banking foundations and government agencies. This support will enable us to increase the scope of our actions in favor of children and families in need all over Italy. All that we have achieved so far goes well beyond anything I could have imagined. And I am confident that we will be able to do the same in the future, because there is a great number of people, companies and institutions that care deeply about children welfare and have helped us reach these goals. I am very grateful for your support. If we walk together, we can go far. Thank you. Goffredo Modena President and Founder

Who we are

Identity and Values Providing real help to children in need in Italy and all over the world

Mission

in the field of Education all over the world, with the aim of providing access to schooling to children living in the poorest countries, while the actions in the field of Education and Work in Italy include projects supporting learning and working opportunities for young people. During 18 years of activity Mission Bambini has supported over 1,500 projects in favor of 1,350,000 children in 73 countries all over the world.

The Mission Bambini Foundation was created in Italy in the year 2000 “to provide help and support to children who are poor, sick or uneducated or have been victims of psychological or physical abuse, giving them the opportunity and the hope of a better life”. Our work has always been focused on children and our aim is to accompany them towards their future: we want to be their lucky stars.

Founder and President

Mission Bambini is an independent, non-profit and non-clerical organization, officially recognized as a Non-profit Institution (Non-profit Organization of Social Value). The Foundation rejects any kind of cultural, racial or religious discrimination and operates with the utmost respect of children’s rights. In the pursuit of its mission, the Foundation conforms to the values of Liberty, Justice, Truth, Respect for others and Solidarity.

Goffredo Modena, born in Bologna in 1938, is the Founder and President of the Mission Bambini Foundation. After obtaining a degree in Electronic Engineering, he starts working in the field of telecommunications, covering functions of increasing responsibility. At the age of 43 he leaves his managerial job and becomes entrepreneur. He leads his company to success, increasing the turnover from 500,000 to 130 million Euros and the staff from 30 to 350 employees. At the age of 59 he sells his business to an American company and begins a new life phase, wishing to dedicate his time, energy and experience to helping others, in particular less fortunate children. In 2000, at the age of 62, with the support of his wife and children, Goffredo Modena decides to create the Foundation “aiutare i bambini” in Milan, which becomes Mission Bambini Foundation in 2015.

Early in 2015 the Italian Foundation created Mission Bambini Switzerland and Friends of Mission Bambini USA. In 2017 Mission Bambini has chosen two main areas for priority action: Education - for children between 0 and 6 in Italy, and Health - for the treatment of children’s heart disease in the world. Besides these priority areas, the Foundation operates

the BoD regarding help projects to children to be financed and/or managed. In order to select and evaluate these projects, the Technical Committee employs methods and criteria which have been approved by the BoD. It includes representatives of the Project department, the President, some members of the BoD and other outside members in different capacities.

The Mission Bambini Foundation has the following statutory bodies with managing and overseeing functions: President, Board of Directors, Technical Committee, Panel of Auditors.

The Panel of Auditors verifies the regular bookkeeping and accounting procedures and prepares its annual report which is attached to the balance-sheet.

The President is the legal representative of the Foundation, he summons and chairs the Board of Directors, carries out its decisions and exercises the functions which are entrusted to him by the Board of Directors as a general rule or on particular occasions. In cases of absolute necessity and urgency the President may carry out extraordinary administrative acts, which then have to be approved by the Board of Directors within 90 days.

In 2018 Mission Bambini has created the Honor Committee, with the function of assisting the BoD in its networking activity in the various fields of corporate and financial enterprise, universities, national and international philanthropy, in order to support the Foundation’s statutory activities. Members are invited into the Honor Committee by the President of Mission Bambini. These members are: Baldassarre Agnelli, Giulio Artom, Giovanni Battista Benvenuto, Chiara Buttè, Dario Giambelli, Stefano Marianeschi, Bruno Mazzetta, Manuela Mezzetti, Maria Laura Risolo, Lucio Tabini.

The Board of Directors (BoD) takes decisions on the Foundation’s strategy, on short and medium term plans, on the budget and balance sheet and on the allocation of funds to the various help projects proposed by the Technical Committee. It elects its own members and the members of the Technical Committee. Besides the President, the members of the Board of Directors are: Maria Paola Villa, Sara Modena, Elisabetta Modena, Ottavio Crivaro, Luigi Anelli, Giuseppe Marsi and Roberto Bercè.

The Foundation’s staff counts 29 employees with different functions. The heads of each office answer directly to the President. In addition to the staff, the Foundation can count on a national net of 300 volunteers under the supervision of 25 local coordinators, who are volunteers themselves.

Operating methods Mission Bambini Foundation is a mixed foundation, as it pursues its goals in two different ways: financing local partners and direct projects’ implementation.

Financing local partners

Direct projects’ implementation

Mission Bambini supports projects in favor of children and young people in need in Italy and all over the world. These projects are managed by qualified non-profit organizations (partners). The requests for support are evaluated and selected according to a series of parameters. After signing an “ethical contract”, the funds are supplied at various stages of the development of each project.

Since 2013, Mission Bambini has developed a method of implementing projects directly in Italy and abroad. The projects are designed by the Foundation on the basis of a deep understanding of various needs and environments. The implementation may extend over several years and is managed directly by the Foundation with the assistance of other nonprofit organizations (associations, social care cooperatives, NGOs).

Besides providing financial support, in some cases the Foundation carries out a “capacity building” program, in order to improve the partner’s managing skill. The development of the supported projects is monitored and subjected to an ongoing evaluation by means of periodical reports sent by the partner, on-site inspections by members of the Foundation and volunteers’ visits.

Directly implemented projects are co-financed by institutional donors, for example the European Union or corporations, by means of calls for bids or funding lines. When operating abroad, the Foundation applies for registration, if necessary, as a locally active corporation and exploits all available resources, including the Foundation’s own headquarters and expat personnel living in the country.

The joint operations that bring about the best results and are most effective in the good use of resources grow into long-lasting partnerships, with the aim of creating the conditions for a better future for children and young people. Under no circumstances does Mission Bambini fully cover the costs intended for a project. The Foundation favors partners that show independent fundraising abilities.

Besides directly implemented projects, the Foundation has always played a different role from a simple funding institution in the Health sector: Mission Bambini directly organizes the logistics for the volunteer doctors’ missions going abroad to treat children suffering from heart disease and the Foundation personnel or volunteers take part in these missions.

The additional value of Mission Bambini dle resources and therefore increase the impact of measures, to other funding organizations which can reach and even exceed their goals, by concentrating their funding on specific projects run together with Mission Bambini and by taking advantage of the monitoring and evaluation work carried out by the Project Offices and the Technical Committee.

Thanks to over 1,500 projects supported in 73 countries, Mission Bambini has collected valuable expertise: good practices set up online, the exchange of experiences and the interchange of different solutions to similar problems are an incredible additional value. ment home Mission Bambini Switzerland supports the so-called “play area” for children between 0-3 and their mothers. A wide range of social and cultural activities for all age groups improves the learning opportunities and the wellbeing of both children and elderly residents.

Mission Bambini Switzerland, formally founded on 28 January 2015 with headquarters in Lugano, is a Swiss foundation to all intents and purposes, under the control of Swiss federal law and tax authorities. Goffredo Modena is the Founder and President of Mission Bambini Switzerland.

In Italy the Foundation has contributed to the creation of the “Children Canteen” in Cittareale, a small municipality in the Province Rieti, only 20 kilometers from Amatrice, which was badly damaged by the earthquake that hit Central Italy on 24 August 2016. Thanks to this new building, children attending the nearby preschool and primary school can have lunch at the canteen and then go back to their educational activities in the afternoon.

The Foundation, which was created to enhance and widen its valuable existing relations to Swiss private donors, companies and foundations, has the mission to provide concrete support to children who are impoverished, sick, without education, or have undergone physical or psychological abuse, all over the world and in Switzerland. In 2015 Mission Bambini Switzerland joined ProFonds, the umbrella Association of all Swiss public utility institutions.

In Zimbabwe the Foundation has contributed to the opening of the Tichakunda Center, which was built in previous years thanks to funding provided by the Foundation. The new school, which lies on the northern outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, provides good-quality education for 900 children.

Results in 2017 In the course of 2017 Mission Bambini Switzerland donated 288,287 francs to children support projects, therefore increasing its allocation by 30,7% compared to the 222,000 francs donated in 2016.

And finally, in 2017 the Foundation has confirmed its involvement in Health projects by supporting the missions of volunteer doctors organized by Mission Bambini in Kenya, Zimbabwe and Romania with the aim of saving children suffering from heart disease and waiting for an operation.

In Switzerland the Foundation has continued the long-term partnership, started in 2016, with the retirement home managed by the San Rocco Foundation in Morbio. Within the premises of this retire-

Education for Children 0-6

Provide access to nursery and preschool for children from families in need

1,2 millions In Italy 1,2 million children, i.e. more than 1 out of 10, live in absolute poverty. This figure has been appearing for a few years in the annual survey on poverty in Italy, published by the Italian Institute of Statistics. Within just over 10 years the percentage of impoverished minors has tripled: from 3.9% in 2005 it has increased to 12.5% in 2016 (data published by Istat, July 2017). We are facing a true social emergency: our children and our teenagers are the first victims of the economic crisis, when parents experience difficulties in finding work and money.

in all these years we have helped open or extend over 100 early childhood services all over Italy, particularly in the suburbs of big cities, in areas with insufficient services and in Southern Italy. The services we support are run by qualified socially active organizations (associations, cooperatives) that employ volunteer workers and helpers.

Reduced fees o free tuition Many families nowadays are no longer able to afford nursery fees and many mothers are forced to give up their paid work in order to look after their children, which further impoverishes a family’s budget. For this reason, in the nurseries that we support at least 25% of places are reserved for children from families living in difficult social and economic situations.

Poverty from a material and educational point of view In Italy poor children do not have enough to eat, do not have proper clothing nor shoes, cannot afford to buy school supplies. But poverty is not confined to the means of sustenance, it affects education too. For many children, being poor means not being able to access services and opportunities of schooling and education, such as nurseries (between 0-3) or preschool (between 3-6). The lack of money and the lack of good education lead up to a vicious circle that is passed on from one generation to the next.

Thanks to the constant support provided by the donors who sponsor a child in Italy, needy children and their families receive very practical assistance: reduced nursery fees or free admission to nurseries, meal vouchers, clothing, diapers and formula milk to be used in the nurseries. As in foreign child sponsorships, donors receive information, photos and upto-date news on the group of children attending the chosen nursery. By including preschools in its projects, Mission Bambini has created a new nursery and community school model which, besides caring for the development and the wellbeing of children, helps parents develop their parenting skills.

New nurseries and playgrounds Mission Bambini has been working in the field of children education in Italy since 2006, when there were very few nurseries, much less than today. Therefore,

THE NURSERY AS A FAMILY “When I had to leave my job as a nurse in a retired home because I was not being paid, I thought of taking my eldest son Matteo out of nursery. For him this would have meant losing a good environment for growing and developing, but without my salary we could no longer afford the fee. To my astonishment I was told: “Do not worry, Matteo can stay, you can pay a reduced fee”. After a few months I found another job, so now we can pay a full fee again. That help was very important for us, it gave us the necessary peace of mind to overcome a difficult time. Since then we have had two more children: they go to nursery too, which is like a second family for us”. Laura, Matteo’s mother

Services 0-6: a Passport to the Future Based on over 10 years of experience in the field of early childhood education in Italy, in 2017 Mission Bambini has started the project “Services 0-6: a Passport to the Future” with the aim of creating opportunities of good quality education for more than 1,500 children between 0-6 living in underprivileged families. Thanks to this project we can reach and offer help to children as well as their parents: this is the only way to fight material and cultural poverty and to stop this disadvantage being passed down from generation to generation.

Improve access to nursery and preschool

The project is supported by means of the media campaign #fattiGRANDE, has a time scope of 3 years and is based on our direct implementation model: it is managed directly by the Foundation, in cooperation with 12 main partner, i.e. nurseries, playgroups and

improve personal and parenting skills of at least 400 parents every year.

An educating community Action 3 aims at turning the participating early childhood services into actual “community nurseries and preschools”, in which all the members of a community take on and share the challenge of educating the young generations and of supporting their families. Thanks to the project two new professional roles will be created: the Neighborhood Operator and the Sustainability Manager. The Neighborhood Operator’s job is to listen and find out what families require, in order to be able to support them in their search for a solution to their problems in the fields of education, work, health and integration, by referring them to the specific health and social services operating in the area. The Sustainability Manager’s job is to look for new sources of funding, so that the participating services do not have to depend on the ever decreasing public finances, with the involvement of companies, donors and volunteers.

Increase parenting skills Action 2 aims at providing a concrete answer to the problem of families that are alone and helpless in their educational role. Parents need to feel they are part of a community that supports their efforts in raising their children, particularly if the family environment is economically and culturally poor. Thanks to the project, parents will be able to attend meetings and workshops where they can share experiences and discuss topics of interests in a friendly environment. These opportunities will be provided with the active cooperation of local facilities like libraries and museums. Meetings and workshops will

Health

Save children with serious heart diseases born in the poorest countries

1 million It has been estimated that 1 million children are born every year with a congenital heart disease all over the world. Around 80% are born in a poor country: half of them won’t survive beyond the first year due to lack of medical help and surgical facilities; the others will suffer serious growth problems and difficulties in their psychosomatic development, caused by pulmonary and/or circulatory handicaps. Mission Bambini has been active in the field of Health since 2005, helping treat children suffering from heart diseases in the poorest countries where it implements 3 methods of intervention.

surgery in hospitals. The Foundation bears the costs of the journey and the stay in Italy for the children and their companions (usually the mother).

Providing support to local hospitals If both hospitals and health care workers are available and adequate, the Foundation supports the purchase of equipment and facility improvement or covers the costs of surgery for the poorest families.

The importance of training

Medical volunteers’ missions

Training is one of the main strong points of the work of Mission Bambini: the long-term goal is to make the countries of intervention capable of treating children heart diseases autonomously. During the missions volunteers doctors offer training to local doctors both in OR and in class. Missions are repeated several times in the same hospitals, in order to continue and complete training sessions. Moreover, the Foundation enters agreements with local universities so that the training received by students attending the volunteer doctors’ lectures is acknowledged as part of their curriculum. Finally, the Foundation funds one or more scholarships every year for foreign doctors who are interested in training in Italian hospitals. The Scientific Coordinator of all our actions in the field of Health is Dr. Stefano Marianeschi, Head of Children heart surgery at the Niguarda Hospital in Milan.

If in the sick children’s country there are adequately equipped hospitals, but they lack trained personnel to perform pediatric heart surgery, the Foundation organizes humanitarian missions of medical volunteers (mainly Italians and from other European countries). A mission lasts 1 week and allows to perform surgery on an average of 10 children. Mission Bambini organizes the missions and bears the costs of the journey and the stay of the medical volunteers in the foreign country.

Transporting pediatric cardiac patients to Italy and to Romania If there is a lack of both hospitals and doctors, children are transported to Italy or to Romania (if born in an Eastern European country) where they receive

OPERATIONS AND TRAINING “It happens at that very moment, when a child, still aching after surgery, finds the energy to smile for the first time, then you realize how invaluable our work is. These children do not know the name of their illness, nor the treatment, nor the surgery procedure. But when they look at you, you realize they understand everything. I often take part as a volunteer in the missions organized by Mission Bambini and I memorize the face of each child. In each trip we face the unknown, because we operate in environments with very poor hygiene. The arrival of an international team becomes a great opportunity for each country we visit to save small patients, but also to acquire valuable know-how that will allow them to treat children heart diseases autonomously in the future”. Education

Ensure access to education through the support provided by child sponsorships

61 millions Ensuring primary education for all children is still a distant goal and the pace at which we move towards this goal is slowing down all over the world: according to the latest UN data 61 million children in the world between 6 and 11 cannot go to school. If we add secondary education, we count a total of 260 million children and young adults who are currently outside the school system: 70% live in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. Moreover, many children have not acquired basic skills in reading and math even after completing their primary education.

or a group of children until they achieve their primary or secondary school diplomas. In some cases, Mission Bambini contributes to the construction of schools or their enlargement and successively promotes child sponsorships that enable children to go to these schools.

Caring environment Mission Bambini supports residential facilities offering a safe accommodation, medical care and a caring environment to children in particularly difficult situations: orphans, HIV-positive children, refugees. Children usually remain as guests in these centers over a short period of time, so these projects are funded by means of group sponsorships (the donor supports the entire facility, not just a single child).

Education Endemic poverty, child labor, humanitarian emergencies prevent children from receiving adequate schooling. On the other hand, even where education is available and free of charge, it is often lacking in quality: few and overcrowded school facilities, far from home; in other cases families cannot afford to buy school supplies.

“Pink sponsorships” Giving girls access to education helps prevent children marriages and/or pregnancies, reduce mortality due to childbirth and neonatal mortality. For this reason, from 2017 Mission Bambini has created the so-called “Pink sponsorships” in cooperation with its child sponsorship partners: they sponsor and support girl students with special merits or living in underprivileged conditions in the final steps of their curriculum and help them obtain a diploma, a professional or a university degree.

Thanks to individual sponsorships (each donor supports a single child), since 2001 the Mission Bambini Foundation has been able to guarantee thousands of children the right to a good education every year, by covering schooling costs: entry fees, books and uniforms. For many children, going to school also means receiving at least one meal a day. The long-lasting support offered by donors through child sponsorships enables us to accompany a child

ALAN, A HAPPY CHILD “Alan does not run to hug you when you enter the classroom in the morning. He is busy eating his portion of milk and oats... besides the portion of the child sitting next to him! Alan is a pulling force, a leader who can bring the whole class to dance a sort of rain dance to the constant scream of “helicoptero, helicoptero”. Alan doesn’t use his little shoes to walk, he uses them as a telephone! Alan’s eyes are cheerful and cunny, and they shine even brighter when he jumps into the paddling pool or when his young mother collects him from the Center. Alan is the wonderful and clever 4-year old child Michele Seghezzi and I met during our volunteer adventure in the Dominican Republic. We have been sponsoring him since Christmas from our far away country!”. Dayana Ghezzi, Mission Bambini volunteer and donor

Other action areas – ITALY

Education and Work

Prevent school dropouts and promote employment for young people

2,2 millions Objective and beneficiaries

NEETs (acronym for Not in Education, Employment or Training) are young people who do not work nor study. According to the latest data published by Università Cattolica, in Italy 2,2 million young people between 15 and 29 have no access to any kind of schooling and nor to the labor market. Within the UE the rate is as high as 14.2%, but it reaches 24.3% in Italy where 1 in 4 young person is a NEET with no prospects for a better future.

The projects supported through the new action field Education and Work pursue the overall aim of recognizing, involving and activating young people at risk of becoming or already in the condition of NEETs, by promoting personal talent as a positive force, by increasing education or working opportunities (especially in the most depressed areas) and by finding effective ways of improving employment opportunities. Teenagers and young people between 11 and 24 will benefit from these projects.

The age groups in which the risk of becoming NEETs is highest include students in the first grades of secondary school. If these young people drop out of school, they usually give up education completely and their chances of finding employment become even smaller.

Planned actions The programs regarding the action field Education and Work include different actions. First of all, tutoring and preliminary advice will be provided for young NEETs, in order to determine the best course of action for each person. Students and young people who would like to go back to school will receive support in their school activities, they will be able to attend practical workshops or craftsmen’s workshops, where they can “learn by doing”, and the so-called “second chance school” where they can rely on support provided by professional educators, psychologists and education specialists. Young people who are interested in entering the job market will receive guidance and motivational training, they will be assisted in finding ways to learn new skills, they will attend workshops to learn the specific skills required in a particular job, and receive active support in looking for employment. Young workers will attend vocational training at their workplace, they will benefit from individual tutoring during and after their apprenticeship and support when starting a microenterprise. Furthermore, Mission Bambini is planning to open a case study on Nove+, a project that is implemented directly by the Foundation in the Zona 9 district of Milan. The specific actions that have been carried out fall within the scope of Education and Work. The study will employ the “Organizational change management” approach to evaluate actions and ensure that changes are implemented smoothly and successfully to achieve lasting measurable benefits.

Our support to teenagers and young people Mission Bambini has been working on many projects aimed at preventing school dropouts since 2006 and on various projects aimed at promoting the access of young people to the labor market since 2011. In all these years we have helped more than 7,000 students by supporting the creation of day centers and after-school centers all over Italy, particularly in the poorest urban areas where social disadvantage deeply affects the weakest members of society. More than 400 young people have found their first jobs thanks to vocational training received in local companies or in new social enterprises supported by the Foundation.

A single action field Since 2017 Mission Bambini has decided to join all these efforts into the single action field Education and Work, having realized that actions aimed at young people reentering the school system and those aimed at supplying vocational training are closely connected. This step will allow to create a continuous chain of activities accompanying young people from secondary school to their first employment.

Nove+, a community welfare project School dropouts, young petty criminals, family isolation, lack of jobs for young people, integration difficulties for immigrants: these are the main social problems affecting metropolitan suburbs in many countries as well as in Italy. Unfortunately the resources allocated by both central and local governments to address these problems are decreasing rapidly. Therefore it is even more important to test new welfare models, engaging all the local bodies and individuals working with and for children, teenagers and families. Citizens are no longer simple “service users”, they become individuals endowed with precious gifts and capabilities that must be put to good use in order to bring about real changes in society: this is the so-called “generative welfare”. These considerations form the background to “Nove+”, a project implemented directly by Mission Bambini in the Zona 9 district of Milan. This 3-year-operation was launched in 2016 thanks to the call for bids “Community Welfare and Social Innovation” by Cariplo Foundation. It involves 14 partners, among which four schools, eight non-profit organizations and the Milan City Council Department of education. The project’s main aims are focused on fighting school dropouts and on promoting working opportunities for young people in local manufacturing and trading companies. In 2017, 5 community centers have been opened, new IT and sporting equipment has been donated to local schools, scores of student have been helped obtain an intermediate school certificate and more than 20 young people have received vocational training as a step towards starting a career.

Earthquake in central Italy

Every year millions of children all over the world are the victims of natural disasters and are forced to give up their education because school buildings have been damaged or made unsafe. In the last few years natural catastrophes have repeatedly hit the Italian peninsula, especially violent earthquakes causing destruction in the areas around L’Aquila, in the region Emilia Romagna and, lately, in central Italy.

In the night between 23 and 24 August 2016 a 6 degree earthquake hits the small towns of Accumoli and Amatrice, in the Province Rieti. On October 30, a 6.5 degree earthquake hits Norcia: it is the most violent earthquake in Italy since 1980. The earth shakes repeatedly until the early months of 2017 causing enormous devastation all over central Italy: hundreds of casualties, whole towns and villages destroyed, local economy brought to a standstill.

The philosophy behind the actions

In 2016 and 2017 Mission Bambini has accomplished important operations in the central Italian regions that were hit by the earthquake. In 2017, in particular, in agreement with local authorities, the Foundation built the “Children canteen” in Cittareale, a small municipality in the Province Rieti, only 20 kilometers from Amatrice, which was badly damaged by the earthquake on 24 August 2016. Thanks to this new building, a 144-m2 wooden prefabricated unit equipped with a catering-size kitchen and 60 seats, 40 children attending the nearby preschool and primary school can have lunch at the canteen and then go back to their educational activities in the afternoon.

If natural disasters happen in foreign countries where Mission Bambini is operating, theFoundation’s action is focused mainly on rebuilding schools and child care centers. The Foundation supports the distribution of emergency supplies (water, food, hygienic items), if this can be achieved quickly and effectively with the involvement of local partners. If emergency situations arise within Italy as a consequence of natural disasters, Mission Bambini provides its support in a later phase, with the aim of helping communities to gradually regain normal living conditions. Operations always take place in agreement with local authorities and involve special bodies, such as the Civil Protection and rescue services.

Early in 2018 Mission Bambini started building a youth center in Montereale, a municipality around 30 km from L’Aquila, that had already been hit by an earthquake in 2009 and then again in 2016 and 2017. The center was officially opened on 1 June 2018.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE Since the year 2000 Mission Bambini has provided help on many occasions in favor of people suffering because of wars and natural disasters in Italy and all over the world. ● 2004 TSUNAMI Asia: emergency aid, 2 schools and 22 houses rebuilt, purchase of boats and fishing nets ● 2009 EARTHQUAKE Italy, L’Aquila: 1 welfare and medical center, 1 youth center and 1 nursery built ● 2010 EARTHQUAKE Haiti and Dominican Republic: emergency aid, 2 schools rebuilt, 5 wells and 5 latrines built, water-purifying kits distributed ● 2012 EARTHQUAKE Italy, Emilia Romagna: 1 multipurpose recreational center built ● 2014 TYPHOON Philippines: 10 schools rebuilt ● 2015 EARTHQUAKE Nepal: food parcels distributed, 100 temporary metal sheet shelters and a 2-class “temporary learning center” built ● 2016 EARTHQUAKE central Italy: 3 months of free canteen service provided for 120 the pupils of the new temporary school in Amatrice, 3 school complexes repaired and proofed for safety in the Province L’Aquila (Projet “Safe@ school”), school and nursery “Norcia rinasce” built in the town of Norcia.

A new children canteen in Cittareale

It is a warm sunny day, we are listening to twenty children singing our national anthem in front of a group of around hundred people who have gathered for the occasion in this small, far off corner of the world, surrounded by the mountains of Central Apennine. Suddenly time stands still and we are overwhelmed by emotions: 25 May 2017, the official opening of the “Children canteen” in Cittareale. These children and their families have experienced the trauma caused by an earthquake: they have lost relatives and friends, their homes have been destroyed, they have nothing left apart from fragments of their former lives. But they are here today and they sing of “Italy reawakened”. They are here because they have risen from the rubbles and are trying to rebuild their shattered lives, thanks to the solidarity of all those . have given them practical support. helpers who Thank you to: Associazione Gruppo Volontari della Brianza, that contributed to build the canteen and supplied the furniture; the main donor companies: FinecoBank, Ford Fund, Sella Gestioni, FARO Club and its Partners who donated the kitchen, Penny Market; other supporting companies and associations: Clifford Chance, Keysight Technologies Italy, Quochi di Quore, QBE Insurance (Europe) Limited, Linklaters, TNT Italy, Cuore Fratello Onlus. In addition we thank Antonio Masci, engineer of Erre.gi Costruzioni, R.S. Costruzioni e Restauri srl for his support in the realization of the project.

Source and Destination of Funds SOURCE OF FUNDS

The funds collected through donations are devoted to the project or projects selected by the donor. If the donor has not expressed a specific preference, Mission Bambini usually allocates the funds to the most urgent project. When the amount needed to support a project has been reached, the remaining funds are devoted to other projects of the Group aimed at helping children.

In 2017 the Mission Bambini Group received 45,723 donations, collecting a total of 5,353,504 euros, with an increase of 397,005 euros (+ 8%) compared to 2016. The amount of 5,353,504 euros includes the fixed contract-linked donations that have been raised in 2017, which are itemized under the heading “Income from statutory activities” as income “from project-linked contracts”. These funds amount precisely to 1,529,708 euros, of which 1,272,176 euros were donated by foundations and associations and 257,532 euros by corporations.

The total income was 5,401,692 euros, including the income from secondary activities, financial and capital gains and extraordinary income (which are not included in the total funds collected through donations).

MAJOR DONOR EVENTS Throughout the year 2017, the Foundation organized a series of events for donors, supporters and supporting companies, inviting them to take part in pleasant meetings and gatherings focused on solidarity actions. The funds raised on these occasions are devoted to supporting programs in favor of children and young persons in need in Italy and in the world.

LEGACIES When writing one’s last will and testament, it is possible to create a legacy by donating part of one’s estate (the so-called “freely disposable part”) to the most needy. By bequeathing a donation to Mission Bambini, the donor helps the Foundation implement long lasting programs: an investment that can give many children a better future. The legitimate heirs, i.e. spouse, children and direct descendants, are protected by law and receive the so-called “reserved shares” of an estate.

Among the main events: the contemporary art exhibition “Un due tre Stella - Art for Charity. L’arte è un dono” (Stelline Foundation - Milan, 29 March - 2 April), the dinner parties “Cena da Alice Ristorante” (Restaurant Alice c/o Eataly - Milan, 16 May), “Soulgreen charity dinner” (Restaurant Soulgreen - Milan, 14 June), “Cena del Cuore” (Osteria D’Ambrosio - Bergamo, 13 September), “A cena con Valeria Piccini” (SAPS Agnelli Cooking Lab, Lallio - Bergamo, 13 November).

On the passing of someone dear, more and more people chose to make a donation in his or her memory, which does not require a formal document nor the involvement of a lawyer. Giving Mission Bambini a gift in memory of someone dear to us means helping children in need and making sure that our dear ones live on in the children’s smiles.

Fundraising and Voluntary Work

Voluntary Work: Real Help In Italy, in the world, fundraising: different ways of helping children with voluntary work

Mission Bambini offers various opportunities of voluntary work that can provide real help, every day, for children living in difficult conditions in Italy or in other countries all over the world. The voluntary work proposed by Mission Bambini has a specific character: anybody can do it, it is useful and concrete work, a responsible commitment, a therapy for the soul, direct and transparent, as volunteers are able to witness immediately the results of solidarity. It brings out the talents of each and every one, and shows a particular tenderness for children.

Beside the function of Provincial Coordinator, the Foundation has created a new voluntary role, the Ambassador. Thanks to their widespread relationships, their professional and personal skills, Ambassadors can promote partnerships with associations, foundations and corporations based in their areas. On 31 December 2017 there were 17 Ambassadors working for the Foundation.

Fundraising Volunteers In order to help publicize the work of Mission Bambini and raise funds to support its activity, it is possible to work as a volunteer during the fundraising events organized by the Foundation in Italy.

The Foundation does not employ professionals, just ordinary people with enthusiasm and motivation, who are willing to receive coaching.

VOLUNTEERS AT HEADQUARTERS Volunteers at headquarters carry out office jobs under the supervision of co-workers: data collection, translations, phone calls, mailing, communication, report updates. The Foundation’s mission gives them a strong motivation, they belong to different age groups, possess a high level of education, various cultural interests and ample time resources. Most of them live in or around Milan. They represent an invaluable resource: with a total of over 10.000 working hours, 63 volunteers at headquarters have done the work of 6 full time employees in 2017. During the weekend 20 - 21 May 2017, Mission Bambini organized the fourth edition of the event “Banco per l’infanzia” in 160 Prénatal and Bimbostore shops all over Italy. More than 500 volunteers collected a supply of necessities for young children for a total selling value of 73,000 euros. In the following days these items were distributed to 150 institutions: nurseries, playgroups, foster homes that had been previously selected by the Foundation. Together with this event, Mission Bambini launched for the first time in 2017 the crowdfunding campaign #fattiGRANDE, with the involvement of 17 partners among nurseries and playgroups. Thanks to the work of a number of volunteers, donations for a total of 15,000 euros were collected with the aim of supporting the early infancy services involved in their efforts to help families in need raise their children in a peaceful environment.

VOLUNTEERS IN ITALY Voluntary work in Italy can take different forms with Mission Bambini.

Provincial Coordinators Provincial Coordinators, all volunteers, represent the Foundation at local level, promoting its mission amongst citizens, in institutions, companies and on the media. Moreover, coordinators organize the work of local volunteers taking part in all the fundraising events held by the Foundation all over Italy. On 31 December 2017 there were 25 Provincial Coordinators in the country.

In December 2017, 300 Mission Bambini volunteers appeared on the streets wearing traditional Santa’s hats (2 - 3 December) and wrapped Christmas presents in Prénatal e Bimbostore shops (23, 9-10, 16-17 December). Thanks to their efforts, these volunteers raised 32,748 euros donated to save children suffering from heart disease in the poorest countries. Again, on this occasion, with the presence of volunteers in squares and stores all over the country, Mission Bambini organized the second edition of the crowdfunding campaign #GivetheBeat. Thanks to this event – which closed on 9 January 2018 and was granted the Digital Fundraising Award by PayPal and Rete del Dono on 6 February as best online fundraising campaign in the section Non-profit organizations – Mission Bambini received a donation of 104,110 euros by the Mediolanum Foundation to save the lives of 69 children with heart disease.

VOLUNTEERS ABROAD

Volunteers are also free to organize and promote local events as individual fundraising actions, such as dinners or shows, and donate the proceeds to support the Foundation’s projects.

The coaching opportunities have always been one of the most valuable aspects in the relationship between Mission Bambini and its volunteers: they provide invaluable opportunities of enriching one’s personal relations, skills and personality. At its headquarters in Milan the Foundation holds at least two open days every year dedicated to volunteers going abroad. People who are interested in taking part in these missions attend an online technical course (webinar) and are invited to personal interviews. In 2017, moreover, the 11th edition of the National Volunteers’ Workshop took place in Milano with volunteers from all over Italy and presentations on projects supported by the Foundation in Italy and in the world.

Volunteers work for a short time (min. 10 days) in direct contact with children, in schools, after-school centers, foster homes and other projects supported by the Foundation in Africa, Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe. Volunteers abroad look after children, help them with their school work, distribute meals, organize recreational or sporting activities, outings or visits to families. They also act as fist-hand witnesses of how the Foundations funds are used: once back from their trip, Mission Bambini asks the volunteers to submit a report on their experience, complete with photos or videos. In 2017, 50 volunteers inspected 26 projects during 21 missions abroad. Volunteers bear the costs of the journey and insurance themselves.

COACHING

Volunteers in Schools Volunteers returning from missions abroad can decide to spend some of their time visiting schools where they can meet pupils and tell them about their experience, show photos of the trip and answer to questions from children and young people, in order to awaken their interest in subjects such as solidarity and cooperation.

Partnership with Companies Involve employees and generate innovative social models by implementing concrete projects in favor of children in need

For many years, Mission Bambini has been promoting ways of developing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) together with national and international companies. Cooperating with the Foundation brings a whole range of benefits to companies whose employees and stakeholders are involved in the partnership, they increase brand awareness by implementing concrete projects with precise reports on their development, by producing innovative social models and by including cooperation in the corporate strategy, with the opportunity of taking part in the planning of actions.

Specifically, the Foundation creates and carries out employee engagement programs together with corporations that feel the need to develop and apply concrete CSR actions through the work of their employees. These actions are always planned together with each company and take into account corporate sustainability within a local community, creating strong bonding among staff members and direct involvement of the project beneficiaries.

AMAZON FOR SCHOOLS “Amazon met Mission Bambini for the first time three years ago, when we were planning to involve our employees as volunteers actively supporting a social project in favor of the community in the city of Milan. The response from our staff was so enthusiastic that since then we have been rolling up our sleeves every year: with a lot of goodwill and enthusiasm we select schools buildings that are in urgent need of repair and we work to improve the environment. In 2017, besides the renovation work, we have also created an educational garden for a primary school to the great satisfaction of both children and ourselves. Taking part in these endeavors allows us to do something practical and useful within the community in which the company operates and its employees live. Besides, it allows us colleagues to socialize outside the workplace, by providing other environments where we can practice team building and at the same time give concrete help to the neediest members of the community”. Partnership with Foundations

Plan together, test new models, share experiences and skills The Mission Bambini Foundation plans projects in partnership with other foundations in those fields in which its efforts have been most successful. By offering to share its know-how, in particular, Mission Bambini is able to try out innovative models and to share experience, skills and relations.

The partnership between Mission Bambini and other foundations has high additional value, as it allows to produce a major social impact. Moreover, Mission Bambini directly implements important project financed by other foundations.

MEDIOLANUM FOUNDATION FOR #GIVETHEBEAT “We have been supporting Mission Bambini and its efforts in favor of children with heart disease for many years: in December 2015 we supported and took part in the mission “For a New Heart” operating at the Angkor Hospital in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This resulted in a deep appreciation of this project, therefore we decided to join in the 2017 fundraising campaign #GivetheBeat. A group of our volunteer “heart-beaters” went to work with the aim of collecting the necessary funds to support 4 life-saving missions, which 8 of them will be joining. It’s important that each of us does his or her best, because we can achieve great goals and support valuable projects only by working together”.
