in 2016 our Foundation has increased its engagement in favor of children and young people in need. On the one hand, we have been able to continue the projects which started in the past few years and, on the other hand, we have been able to provide quick and much needed assistance to the people who have suffered the devastations produced by earthquakes in central Italy. With the Program “Children’s Heart” we have continued to provide cardiac surgery to children with serious heart diseases in many poor African countries: over 1,700 lives saved in about 10 years. In addition to this, we have provided specific training to local doctors: after learning with the help of our voluntary doctors, in future they will be able to perform these difficult surgical operations in complete autonomy. In Italy we have given a substantial boost to our projects addressing two closely related problems: school drop-outs and unemployment among young people. We have offered our support to day-centers and after-school centers, on the one hand, and have promoted vocational training and new social enterprises, on the other hand. And then, from the end of August, a devastating earthquake repeatedly hit different areas in central Italy. We immediately thought of the children and what could help them make their life as normal as possible. The answer: going to school. Therefore, we went to Norcia on December 22, and attended the official opening of a new infant school, which we were able to build, together with other important partners, in less than two months after the earthquake. Our engagement on these fronts continues with everyone’s help. For this reason I would like to thank all of you for your support and for everything you will help us to achieve. Thank you.

Identity and Values An Italian Foundation with an international vocation, created with the aim of giving support to children in need About Us The Mission Bambini Foundation is an independent, non-profit and non-clerical organization, created in Italy by Goffredo Modena, engineer and entrepreneur, in 2000. During 17 years of activity, Mission Bambini has supported 1,450 projects in favor of 1,300,000 children and young people in Italy and in other 72 countries in the Southern hemisphere. The experience gathered in such different environments, the pragmatic style and the transparent activity make it an ideal partner for planning and supporting actions and projects in favor of children in need in any part of the world. Early in 2015 the Italian Foundation created Mission Bambini Switzerland and Friends of Mission Bambini fund USA.

Founder and President Goffredo Modena, born in Bologna in 1938, is the Founder and President of the Mission Bambini Foundation. After working as Executive Director in the field of telecommunications, at the age of 43 he decides to become an entrepreneur. He leads his company to success, increasing the turnover from 500,000 to 150 million Euros and the staff from 30 to 350 employees. At the age of 59 he sells his business

to an American company and begins a new life phase, wishing to dedicate his time, energy and experience to helping others, in particular less fortunate children. In 2000, at the age of 62, with the support of his wife and children, Goffredo Modena decides to create the Foundation “aiutare i bambini” in Milan, which becomes Mission Bambini Foundation in 2015.
Statutory bodies and members of staff The Mission Bambini Foundation has the following Statutory bodies with managing and overseeing functions: President, Board of Directors, Technical Committee, Panel of Auditors. The President is the legal representative of the Foundation, he summons and chairs the Board of Directors, carries out its decisions and exercises the functions which are entrusted to him by the Board of Directors as a general rule or on particular occasions. In cases of absolute necessity and urgency, the President may carry out extraordinary administrative acts, which then have to be approved by the Board of Directors within 90 days. The Board of Directors (BoD) takes decisions on the Foundation’s strategy, on short and medium term plans, on the budget and balance sheet and on the allocation of funds to the various help projects proposed by the Technical Committee. It elects its own members and the members of the Technical Com-
mittee. Besides the President, the General Director sits on the Board of Directors.
BoD. It includes representatives of the Project department, the President, the General Director, some members of the BoD and other outside members in different capacities.
The Technical Committee submits its proposals to the BoD regarding help projects to children to be financed and/or managed. In order to select and evaluate these projects, the Technical Committee employs methods and criteria which have been approved by the
The Panel of Auditors verifies the regular bookkeeping and accounting procedures and prepares its annual report which is attached to the balance-sheet.
Governance and operational structure
The staff counts 24 employees who are charged with different functions. Each head of office reports directly to the General Director, who in turn reports to the President. Moreover, the Foundation can count on a nationwide network of 1,000 volunteers, grouped under 30 provincial coordinators, who operate as volunteers as well.

Operating methods Mission Bambini Foundation is a mixed foundation, as it pursues its goals in two different ways: financing local partners and direct projects’ implementation.
Financing local partners Mission Bambini supports projects in favor of children and young people in need in Italy and all over the world. These projects are managed by qualified non-profit organizations (partners). The requests for support are evaluated and selected according to a series of parameters - some operation channels in Italy follow a procedure involving calls for bids - and are implemented in cooperation with other private social care operators. After signing an “ethical contract”, the funds are supplied at various stages of development of each project. Besides providing financial support, in some cases the Foundation carries out a “capacity building” program, in order to improve the partner’s managing skill. The development of the sup-
ported projects is monitored and subjected to an ongoing evaluation by means of periodical reports sent by the partner, on-site inspections by members of the Foundation and volunteers’ visits. The joint operations that bring about the best results and are most effective in the good use of resources grow into long-lasting partnerships, with the aim of creating the conditions for a better future for children and young people. Under no circumstances does Mission Bambini fully cover the costs intended for a project. The Foundation favors partners that show independent fundraising abilities.
Direct projects’ implementation Since 2013, Mission Bambini has developed a method of implementing projects directly in Italy
and abroad. The projects are designed by the Foundation on the basis of a deep understanding of various needs and environments. The implementation may extend over several years and is managed directly by the Foundation with the assistance of other non-profit organizations (associations, social care cooperatives, NGOs). Directly implemented projects are co-financed by institutional donors, for example the European Union or corporations, by means of calls for bids or funding lines. When operating abroad, the Foundation applies for registration, if necessary, as a locally active corporation and exploits all available resources, including the Foundation’s own headquarters and expat personnel living in the country.
The Additional Value of Mission Bambini Thanks to over 1,450 projects supported in 73 countries, Mission Bambini has collected valuable expertise: good practices set up online, the exchange of experiences and the interchange of different solutions to similar problems are an incredible additional value. Mission Bambini offers its ability to rally and bundle resources and therefore increase the impact of measures, to other funding organizations which can reach and even exceed their goals, by concentrating their funding on specific projects run together with Mission Bambini and by taking advantage of the monitoring and evaluation work carried out by the Project Offices and the Technical Committee.

Strategy The Foundation has decided to concentrate its activity on specific aid projects aimed at children and young people, and to focus its resources on achieving a few priority goals. During the last few years, in particular, the Foundation has increased its activity in Italy on account of the difficult economic and social situation of our country.

Mission Bambini Switzerland
Mission Bambini Switzerland, officially founded on January 28, 2015, with headquarters in Lugano, is to all intents and purposes a Swiss Foundation, operating under the control of the Swiss Federal Law and tax authority. The aim of the Foundation is to give support to children who are impoverished, sick or without education and to those who have suffered moral or physical abuse all over the world and in Switzerland.
In the wake of the new efforts towards an international opening, which began in 2014, Mission Bambini has increased its presence in other countries, starting with Switzerland, by creating the new Mission Bambini Foundation Switzerland.
This development was the result of the desire to enter new partnerships with other foundations and nonprofit organizations in Europe and all over the world, making the most of and increasing the wide network of relationships with Swiss private donors, companies and foundations that generously support solidarity projects based on concrete and transparent actions, as are, and always have been, the projects of Mission Bambini.
In 2015 Mission Bambini Switzerland has joined ProFonds, the umbrella Association for Foundations and other public service associations in Switzerland.
Results 2016 SWITZERLAND
In the course of 2016 Mission Bambini Switzerland donated 222,000 francs to children support projects, therefore increasing its allocation by 22% compared to the 180,786 francs donated in 2015. There has been an increase in the number of projects supported with different purposes and in different areas, including Switzerland.
In Switzerland the Foundation has started a long-term partnership with a retirement home managed by the San Rocco Foundation in Morbio. Within the premises of his retirement home there is a so-called “play area” for children between 0-3 and their mothers. A first 10,000-franc donation by Mission Bambini Switzerland was used to employ a qualified instructor who provides a wide range of social and cultural activities for all age groups, thus increasing the learning opportunities and the wellbeing of both children and old residents.
ZIMBABWE Thanks to the latest donation of 121,420 francs by Mission Bambini Switzerland, 900 children in the Tichakunda Center in Zimbabwe have now a new school building with spacious, light and airy classrooms. The school lies on the northern outskirts of Harare, Zimbabwe Capital city, in the suburb called “Hatcliffe Extension”.

cated 23,580 francs for measures intended to increase the safety of 3 school buildings in the L’Aquila Province.
CHILDREN’S HEART
In 2016 Mission Bambini Switzerland provided again its support to the “Children’s Heart” project, which aims at saving children suffering from heart disease in the poorest of countries. Thanks to a total contribution of 45,560 francs, it was possible to organize missions of volunteer doctors and support children heart surgeries in local hospitals in Cambodia, Romania and Zimbabwe.
ERITREA
Mission Bambini Switzerland donated 5,360 francs to support a project amongst the Abo, Tokondà and Segheneti communities. The project operates in many ways: distributing food supplements for children, educating young mothers, donating goats and environmental friendly ovens. Thanks to the Foundation’s contribution a workshop was organized in Zazzega, involving 120 mothers, on the subjects of nutrition and personal hygiene and sanitation.
BOLIVIA
BOLIVIA
The Foundation supported the “Ciudad de los Ninos” in Cochabamba, Bolivia, with a donation of 16,080 francs. This center accommodates over 100 children, designated by the Juvenile Court, providing accommodation, food, medical care and education. Many of these children are orphans or have been abandoned, but,
Friends of Mission Bambini fund – USA Friends of Mission Bambini fund - USA was created in 2015 following a proposal by the Mission Bambini Foundation and with the support of the King Baudouin Foundation United States (KBFUS) in New York. KBFUS is an American 501(c)(3) public charity that supports Friends of Mission Bambini fund thanks to American donors who can make their donations through KBFUS and benefit from tax relief according to US law. Children’s Heart Save children with serious heart disease born in the poorest countries
1 million It has been estimated that every year 1 million children are born with congenital heart disease all over the world. Around 80% are born in a poor country: half of them won’t survive beyond the first year due to lack of medical help and surgical facilities; the others will suffer serious growth problems and difficulties in their psychosomatic development, caused by pulmonary and/or circulatory handicaps. The Program “Children’s Heart” implements 3 methods of intervention.
Medical volunteers’ missions
Photo: ©pierrezcollet
If there are adequately equipped hospitals in the sick children’s country, but they lack trained personnel to perform pediatric heart surgery, the Foundation organizes humanitarian missions of (Italian or European) medical volunteers. A mission lasts 1 week and allows to operate on 10 children on average. One of the missions’ main objectives is the training of local doctors: in the long term they should be able to treat children with heart disease autonomously; for this reason, missions are often repeated in the same hospitals. Mission Bambini organizes the missions and bears the costs of the journey and the stay of the medical volunteers in the foreign country.
Transporting children to Italy and to Romania If there is a lack of both hospitals and doctors, children are transported to Italy or to Romania (if born in an Eastern European country) where they receive surgery in hospitals. The Foundation bears the costs of the journey and the stay in Italy for the children and their companions (usually the mother).
Support to local hospitals If both hospitals and health care workers are available, the Foundation supports the purchase of equipment and facility improvement or covers the costs of surgery for the poorest families.

Doctors with a heart of gold All doctors and nurses who take part in the medical missions organized by Mission Bambini within the project “Children’s Heart” are volunteers and represent the strong point of this Program. They are all employed in the best Italian and European hospitals and devote their holidays to our missions. They are highly specialized healthcare professionals, but beside professional competence they possess a unique capacity of dedication, team work and openness to new environments and challenges. A surgical team is composed of 1 or 2 cardiac surgeons, 1 heart specialist, 1 anaesthetist, 1 perfusionist, 2 or more intensive care nurses. Furthermore, our volunteer doctors play a key role in training their colleagues in the countries of intervention, so that they may be able to treat children suffering from heart disease autonomously in the future. Dr. Stefano Maria Marianeschi, head of children cardiac surgery at Niguarda Ca’ Granda Hospital in Milan, acts as scientific coordinator of the program “Children’s heart” since 2015. To the present date 68 volunteer doctors have taken part in the missions organized by Mission Bambini.

Child Sponsorships
Give children the opportunity to go to school through the support provided by child sponsorships
57 million
RESULTS BENEFICIARIES
Despite many progress in recent years, ensuring primary education for all children is still a distant goal: according to UN data, more than 57 million children in the world between 6 and 11 cannot go to school, and more than half are girls. In the poorest countries only 36% of males in secondary school age actually go to school, and this figure sinks to 30% in the case of females.

Education and care
PROJECTS
In many countries, access to education is still a daily challenge for millions of children. There are many different causes: endemic poverty, child labor, war, child recruitment in armed formations. On the other hand, even where education is available and free of charge, it is often lacking in quality: few and overcrowded school facilities, far from home. Children must often walk long distances on foot and families cannot afford to buy school supplies.
2016 from 2001
Individual sponsorships Group sponsorship Total
Thanks to individual sponsorships (each donor is linked to a single child), the Mission Bambini Foundation guarantees thousands of children the right to a good education every year, by means of covering schooling costs: entry fees, books and uniforms. For many children, going to school also means receiving at least one meal a day.

Through child sponsorships, Mission Bambini supports residential facilities offering a safe accommodation, medical care and a caring environment to children in particularly difficult situations (orphans, HIV-positive children, refugees). In many cases children stay for a limited period of time, therefore these projects are supported through group sponsorships (each donor is linked to a group of children). The long-lasting support offered by donors through child sponsorships enables us to accompany the child or group of children until they achieve their primary or secondary school diplomas. In some cases, Mission Bambini contributes to the construction of schools or their enlargement and successively promotes child sponsorships that enable children to go to these schools.
12
SOCIAL IMPACT The SROI (Social Return On Investment) provides a means of measuring the social impact of a project, i.e. how much it improves the life of its beneficiaries and their communities. Amongst all the educational projects supported through child sponsorships, Mission Bambini has chosen one in order to measure its social impact. It is the project, supported over many years, in favor of Dalit children in Bangladesh (“dalit” literally means: “oppressed”, that is “outside the caste system”). In 12 extremely poor rural villages the Foundation supports the access of these children to education by awakening the community’s interest, by supplying schooling material and by supporting after-school activities. In order to assess the social impact of these operations, it was decided to investigate whether beneficiaries showed an increased capacity of generating an income, as a direct consequence of their higher and better education acquired thanks to the project. The results were astonishing: for each euro invested in the project, an added value of 5.6 € was generated with a social impact on the community. This result confirms the strong belief underlying the engagement of Mission Bambini in the field of education, that only by improving education as a starting point can a real improvement in the living condition of millions of children be achieved.
ALL CHILDREN TO THE NURSERY At the nursery small children can interact and play with other children of their own age, they gain independence, and they are cared for by professional teachers throughout the day, when they have time to play, time to eat and time to sleep. The engagement of Mission Bambini in the Program “A nursery for every child” and through child sponsorships aims at allowing all children to attend nursery school, even the children from families living in poor or difficult conditions: for these children the nursery plays an important role facilitating their acceptance within the social environment. The motto “All children to the nursery” has an additional meaning to us: once a year the nurseries that are supported through child sponsorships organize an “open day”, during which donors have the opportunity of inspecting the institution they support, of meeting both teachers and children and taking part in their activities. They can see with their own eyes the results achieved thanks to their generosity. Photo: Stefania Donno, Cesare Medri, Roberto Morelli, Dante Valenza

RESULTS
In Italy there are just over 360,000 places available in public and private nurseries, which cover 22.4% of potential users, i.e. children under the age of 3 (figure provided by the Italian National Institute of Statistics, 2016). Therefore only just over 1 child out of 5 attends one of these nurseries, compared to the European goal of 1 out of 3. In southern Italy the figure sinks to 11.5%. Many families living in poverty or in difficult conditions (for example single working mothers) are excluded from these opportunities because of high fees and do not know where to find child care.

New nurseries and playgrounds With the Program “A Nursery for Every Child”, launched in 2006, Mission Bambini supports nurseries and playgrounds by sharing personnel costs and the expenses for repairs, equipment and rent. The nursery supported by Mission Bambini are located in various parts of Italy, especially in the Southern regions and in the more destitute areas, suburbs or small villages where no such services are available. The Foundation promotes the presence of volunteer helpers (cooking, cleaning or doing maintenance work) or assistant educators. 25% of available places are reserved for children from needy families at a reduced fee. Child sponsorships (Italy) Although it is important, on the one hand, to increase the number and capacity of nurseries, especially in Southern Italy, there is also an increasingly urgent need, on the other hand, to enable families to access the places that are already available. Many children, in fact, run the risk of being excluded from an important experience for their personal growth and development and many mothers may be forced to leave their jobs or reduce their working hours, with additional negative consequences on the family budgets. For this reason, in 2013 the Foundation decided to launch

LET US ROLL UP OUR SLEEVES “We have repainted the walls, tidied up the garden, had the leaks in the roof repaired, fixed and rebought other broken or ruined equipment – says Arianna Turchi, mother and volunteer, speaking on behalf of the parents who helped with the ordinary maintenance work supported by Mission Bambini at the infant school “Flauto Magico” in Bologna. It was not easy to find families willing to give a helping hand. Many thought that doing maintenance work on the school building would be like playing into the hands of the local authorities that fail to perform their duties, but we wanted to do something for our children. And also work and spend time together like a community. Now our school building is lovelly, colorful and clean. Children have created a thank-you poster and the whole project has certainly left a mark on those who are going to be the adults of tomorrow. These experiences of community work help us fight the spirit of resignation and make us stronger. We thank the Foundation for conceiving this plan, for giving us the opportunity of sharing our time and work for our community, and for supplying the funding to this project”. Photo: Roberto Morelli

School First!
Prevent school drop-outs and make Italian schools more attractive and comfortable
14.7% drop-outs
Study help and after-school centers With the Program “School First!”, launched in 2006, Mission Bambini supports study and homework help centers for pupils receiving compulsory education in primary and secondary schools. In the afternoons, children are free to go to an after-school center, where they can do their homework and spend time with other children of the same age-group in a positive, peaceful and stimulating environment. The project’s aims are: preventing school drop-outs by supporting learning opportunities provided by educators and volunteers; offering places where young people can meet, socialize and develop through a wide selection of cultural, recreational and sporting activities; promoting the integration of different cultures. Study help and after-school centers are mainly located in degraded urban areas where people live in poverty and destitution.
Many students in Italy drop out of school without obtaining a qualification. According to Eurostat data, we have a 14.7% quota of “early school leavers”, i.e. young people between 18 and 24 who have only obtained an intermediate school certificate. Furthermore, many of the over 41,000 state school buildings in Italy are in urgent need of ordinary maintenance or extraordinary repairs, as both serious and minor accidents frequently occur, from flaking plaster to whole ceilings crushing down in classrooms.

With the Program “Parents, Let’s Clean the Schools!”, launched in 2015, Mission Bambini intends to make Italian state school buildings more attractive and comfortable. To achieve this aim, it supports volunteers’ groups, pupils’ parents or ordinary citizens, who help carry out ordinary repair works. The Foundation provides materials and equipment. These repair works include: painting classroom walls and corridors, varnishing grates and gates, replacing broken doors and window panes, cleaning gardens and courtyards. The project finances the purchase of fittings other than school equipment and covers the expenses for specialized labor (builders, electricians, plumbers, blacksmiths, glaziers etc.), besides paying for insurance. This project does not include extraordinary repairs. Besides promoting a process whereby citizens learn to consider and care for school buildings as part of the assets of a community, the project intends to promote the use of school buildings as places where citizens can come together and actively shape their communities. For this reason, it supports parents who plan and put ideas into practice with the aim of opening school buildings to everyone outside school hours, offering courses, workshops, sporting tournaments, competitions, neighborhood parties.

difficult social situations, for those who have dropped out of school or for foreign minors with no family or tutors. Through the Program “Young People at Work”, Mission Bambini aims at helping young people on the labor market, especially the ones experiencing disadvantages due to their social environment. The work experiences supported by the Foundation have a strong educational value (the young people involved begin to learn a trade) and are aimed at teaching young people to act as responsible persons, especially when they are employed in enterprises with social responsibility. Our support produces long-lasting benefits: after the working experience, 40% of young people find a stable occupation within one year. Others go back to school or begin other kinds of vocational training.
According to Istat (the Italian National Institute of Statistics) surveys, around 40% of young people in Italy are unemployed: this figure refers to young persons between 15 and 24, excluding students. According to the OECD report published in October 2016 in Italy there are 2.5 million NEET: young people between 15 and 29 who do not work nor study. The situation in Italy is the worst in Europe, just behind Turkey. Finding a job is not easy for young people living in

BENEFICIARIES
With a first action, launched in 2011, the Foundation promotes the start of vocational training in factories or commercial enterprises in the area where young people live. Vocational trainings last 6 months on average. The Foundation bears the expenses for insurance, pays the trainee a monthly wage ranging from 300 to 600 Euros, provides tutoring by an educator and by a job trainer inside the company. This method has proven successful: the trainee is motivated by the economic appreciation of his or her work, the company takes advantage of a new trainee at no costs.

With a second action, launched in 2013 and on which the Foundation has decided to place most of the project’s resources, support is provided to social enterprises that are managed by privates and that provide job opportunities for young people between 16 and 29 without previous working experience or unemployed. The Foundations contributes to start-up investments and to cover the operational costs. The supported companies can operate in any field (for example: food, catering, commerce, tourism, culture, handicrafts), but must have a market-oriented policy and they must prove their economical sustainability.

NORCIA LIVES AGAIN “Hearing the cheerful sound of children’s voices on these school premises is going to be the first sign that our community is truly going back to normal life. Being here today is a great joy and I feel deeply thankful to all those persons who have made this achievement possible”. With these words Nicola Alemanno, Mayor of Norcia, opened the celebrations for the new school and infant school “Norcia rinasce” (Norcia lives again), built with the support of Mission Bambini, together with the local council, and the financing of the Prosolidar Foundation. The school building – a 184-square-meter prefabricated unit made of laminated wood, totally earthquake-proof – was opened officially on December 22, 2016, less than 2 months after the earth shook Norcia on October 30. Since January 2017, 40 children between 3 and 6 are attending classes here, after their school had been destroyed by the earthquake. At the opening ceremony, beside the Mayor of Norcia, Nicola Alemanno, were Goffredo Modena, President of Mission Bambini, Giancarlo Durante, President of the Prosolidar Foundation, Catiuscia Marini, President of the Region Umbria and Renato Boccardo, Archbishop of Spoleto-Norcia.

Wars and calamities
need. Later the Foundation focuses mainly on rebuilding schools and child care centers. The Foundation also supports the distribution of emergency supplies (water, food, hygienic items) if this can be achieved quickly and effectively. If emergency situations arise within Italy as a consequence of natural disasters, Mission Bambini provides its support in a later phase, with the aim of helping communities to gradually regain normal living conditions and with particular regard to children and their need to go to school in the best possible conditions and to find places where they can be together, play and grow in safety. Our operations always take place in agreement with local authorities and involve local bodies.
Every year millions of children all over the world suffer the consequences of wars and natural catastrophes. Beside causing casualties and destruction, these emergencies threaten the very future of whole communities. Children living in these areas are often forced to give up their education, because schools become impossible to reach, buildings are damaged or made unfit for use. Unfortunately, in the last few years even the Italian peninsula has been hit by serious natural disasters, in particular by violent earthquakes in L’Aquila, in Emilia Romagna and, lately, in central Italy.
Earthquake in central Italy In the night between the 23rd and the 24th of August 2016 a devastating earthquake hits the small towns of Accumoli and Amatrice, in the Province Rieti (Lazio). It’s just the first of a long series of quakes that causes destruction during many months in central Italy, especially in the Regions Lazio, Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo. At the end of August, Mission Bambini decides to raise funds with the aim of helping schools in the worst-off areas, trying to organize as normal school routines as possible for the next school year, which would start in a few weeks. In September the Foundation allocates a first sum to provide a 3 months’ free canteen service to 120 pupils in the new temporary school building in Amatrice. In October, thanks to the Project “Safe@school”, it can raise enough money to repair and guarantee the safety of 3 school complexes, which had already been damaged by the earthquake in 2009, in the Province L’Aquila.
The philosophy behind aid intervention When wars and natural disasters happen in foreign countries where Mission Bambini is operating, the Foundation immediately contacts the local representatives in order to assess the conditions of children in
WHAT WE HAVE DONE From the year 2000 to date Mission Bambini has brought aid in favor of communities affected by war and natural disasters, in Italy and all over the world. ● 2004 TSUNAMI in Asia: emergency aid, 2 schools and 22 houses rebuilt, fishing boats and nets purchased ● 2009 EARTHQUAKE in Italy, l’Aquila: construction of 1 pharmacy dispensary and surgery, 1 community center and 1 nursery ● 2010 EARTHQUAKE on Haiti and Dominican Republic: emergency aid, 2 school rebuilt, 5 wells and 5 public toilets constructed, distribution of water purifying kits ● 2012 EARTHQUAKE in Italy, Emilia Romagna: 1 recreational center built ● 2014 TYPHOON in the Philippines: 10 schools rebuilt ● 2015 EARTHQUAKE in Nepal: distribution of food parcels, construction of 100 temporary metal sheet shelters and of a “temporary learning center” with 2 classes
On October 30, a 6.5 degree earthquake almost entirely destroys Norcia, a small town in Umbria, which had survived the previous quake on August 24. It is the most violent earthquake in Italy since 1980. Mission Bambini, together with the town council, decides to build a new infant school to replace the old building that has become unsafe. The school is erected in a very short time, the first public building to be opened in Norcia after the earthquake. During the first months of 2017, after more quakes keep shaking the earth in central Italy, Mission Bambini plans more operations and projects to be accomplished during the year, particularly in Cittareale (RI), Pieve Torina (MC) and Montereale (AQ).

Source and destination of funds SOURCE OF FUNDS In 2016 the Mission Bambini Group received 49,154 donations, collecting a total of 4,956,499 euros, with an increase of 276,450 euros (+ 5,9%) compared to 2015. The amount of 4,956,499 euros includes the fixed contract-linked donations that have been raised in 2016, and are itemized under the heading “Income from ordinary activities” as income “from projectlinked contracts”. These funds amount precisely to 1,119,990 euros, of which 908,845 euros donated by foundations and associations and 211,145 euros by corporations. The total income was 4,983,706 euros, including the income from secondary activities, financial and capital gains and extraordinary income (which are not included in the total funds collected through donations).

FUNDS ALLOCATED BY DESTINATION The funds collected through donations are devoted to the project or projects selected by the donor. If the donor does not express a specific preference, Mission Bambini usually allocates the funds to the most urgent project. When the amount needed to support a project has been exceeded, the remaining funds are devoted to other projects of the Group aimed at helping children. In 2016, the funds devoted to institutional activities (itemized in the Financial statement as “Expenses for statutory activities”) amounted to 3,834,435 euros, i.e. 77.1% of our total expenses (total allocated funds). The funds devoted to the Foundations’ activities include, in particular, those allocated to support projects in favor of children and all the expenses connected to the projects’ realization, including the costs of keeping the donors constantly up to date on their chosen There has been a slight increase in the expenses linked to the fundraising activity (+2.4%), due to the effort of maintaining or even increasing the value of donations in spite of the general crisis still affecting our economy. On the other hand, there has been a significant decrease (-19%) in the organization’s expenses (staff salaries, rent lease for the office, various utilities, etc.), which have been covered by approximately 25% thanks to funds donated by the Founders.

Private donors and voluntary work
Make a donation on the street or by sending an SMS, start a sponsorship, the “5xmille” initiative: anyone can support the projects of Mission Bambini CHILD SPONSORSHIPS AND LETTERS OF APPEAL Private funds are collected throughout the year by means of donations for child sponsorships and donations in response to mailings sent to donors. In 2016 996,822 euros were raised thanks to children spon-
sorships in Italy and abroad. Donors periodically receive up-to-date information on the child or group of children they support, by means of fact sheets, photos, children’s letters and drawings.
5xTHOUSAND In 2016 the Financial statement shows an amount of 303,977 euros under the heading “Donations from 5 per thousand”, which have been raised thanks to 7,631 Italian tax-payers who have chosen to donate 5‰ of their taxes to Mission Bambini in their income tax statement for 2015. These funds, which will be received by the Foundation in 2017, will be allocated, as in previous years, to supporting the Program “A Nuresery for Every Child”. Starting from 2016, Mission Bambini has decided to allocate these funds to projects aimed at reducing the rate of school dropouts and at providing ordinary maintenance to public schools in Italy, and has created a new awareness campaign on these new aims.
SOLIDARITY SMS’S Thanks to solidarity cell phone numbers offered by mobile telephone companies and thanks to the free advertising space granted on national and local media, specifically on RAI, Mediaset, SKY and La7 TVchannels, between September 12 and October 2 Mission Bambini collected 93,548 euros as a result of 2- or 5-euro’s donations by SMS’s and phone calls to 45504. These funds were distributed to nurseries all over the country, in order to help families in need to buy necessary items for their children and to pay for nursery and canteen fees. Moreover, some of these funds were allocated to support children living in central Italy, where the earthquake caused great damages in August 2016. The funds have helped them to gradually return to normal life by focusing on education.

PUBLIC EVENTS With the help of many volunteers, Mission Bambini organized 2 nation-wide events during 2016. On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of April we organized the event “Banco per l’infanzia” in Prénatal stores for the third time. 500 volunteers collected various items, such as diapers, wet wipes, feeding bottles and clothes for a total selling value of 50,000 euros. These articles were then distributed to 130 institutions that provide everyday help to children in need throughout the country: nurseries, playgroups, foster homes and pregnancy centers. On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December Mission Bambini volunteers organized the traditional Christmas
event “Le Piazze del cuore” in many Italian streets and squares. Thanks to this event and to donations collected through the new crowdfunding campaign “Give the beat!” and by helpers wrapping Christmas presents in Prénatal stores, Mission Bambini raised over 94,000 euros to support the “Children’s Heart” Program. During 2016, the Foundation organized a series of events – such as fund raising dinners – for donors, supporters and supporting companies: pleasant meetings and gatherings, with special the appearance of testimonials and show business VIPs or sporting champions, beside famous chefs. The funds raised on these occasions are devoted to supporting Programs in favor of children and young persons in need in Italy and in the world.
VOLUNTARY WORK The voluntary work proposed by Mission Bambini has a specific character: anybody can do it, it is useful and concrete work, a responsible commitment, a therapy for the soul, direct and transparent, as volunteers are able to witness immediately the results of solidarity. It brings out the talents of each and every one, and shows a particular tenderness for children. The Foundation’s volunteers are normal people with enthusiasm and motivation, who are willing to receive coaching. Voluntary work can take different forms. Volunteers at headquarters carry out office jobs under the supervision of co-workers. They represent an invaluable resource: with a total of over 12,000 working hours in 2016, 71 volunteers at headquarters have done the work of 7 full time employees. In Italy the Foundation can count on a network of 1,000 volunteers taking part in national fundraising events. These volunteers report to 30 Provincial Coordinators, all volunte-
ers, who represent the Foundation at local level, promoting its mission amongst citizens, in institutions, companies and on the media. Outside Italy volunteers are involved in concrete working experiences in direct contact with children, in schools, after-school centers, foster homes and other projects supported by the Foundation in Africa, Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe. Volunteers abroad look after children, help them with their school work, distribute meals, organize recreational or sporting activities, outings or visits to families. They also act as fist-hand witnesses of how the Foundations funds are used: once back from their trip, Mission Bambini asks the volunteers to submit a report on their experience, complete with photos or videos. In 2016, 37 volunteers inspected 25 projects during 22 missions abroad. Volunteers bear the costs of the journey and insurance themselves.

SPONSORSHIP
Cassa Lombarda - a small private bank based in Milan and with branch offices in Lombardy and in Rome - was main sponsor of the Gala dinner with Niko Romito on 21 November 2016 at the Research and Training Center Saps in Lallio (BG), which belongs to the famous “Baldassare Agnelli” company. All the funds collected during this evening were devoted to Mission Bambini’s Safe@School project, which is aimed at securing various school buildings in areas around L’Aquila that had become unsafe after the earthquake in autumn 2016.
STRATEGIC ALLIANCE
The Artsana Group – owner of the Chicco brand – has been supporting the “Children’s Heart” Program, devised by Mission Bambini to cure children with heart diseases in the poorest countries, since 2013. The action involves 9 branches throughout the world: in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, the US, Spain and Italy, supporting the program with local CSR initiatives. The company’s top managers joined four volunteer doctors’ missions abroad – the latest in December 2016 - that were supported by the “Children’s Heart” Program. They could verify from direct experience the deep impact of these missions
CAUSE RELATED MARKETING In September 2016, only a few days before the beginning of the new school year, Groupon and Mission Bambini created the 8+ project, aimed at supporting ordinary maintenance and providing equipment in 8 schools in Milan, Rome, Bologna, Turin, Genoa, Vicenza, Brescia and Naples. During 3 weeks 1€ for each coupon sold on selected deals was allocated to the project. Within this action Groupon started a survey among its users and asked them to evaluate public school structures in Italy.
based on the fundamental human values of respect and solidarity. “Chicco’s engagement on an international level, supporting an Italian foundation - said Francesca Catelli, CSR Director of Artsana Group - is based, on the one hand, on the common Italian roots of both our corporation and the Foundation and, on the other, on the reliability, honesty and professional handling of resources guaranteed by the Foundation. The CSR engagement informs all our activities and, together with children’s happiness, constitutes the essence of our mission”.
“Together with its commercial partners and thanks to the engagement of its users, for the last 5 years Groupon has been supporting non-profit organizations operating in Italy - said Nicola Catarossi, Groupon’s Managing Director for Southern Europe - in the effort of providing concrete help to local communities. The project developed together with Mission Bambini helps us to support an institution at the very heart of our society, by providing concrete and immediate support to schools in very poor conditions”.

SUCCESSFUL CASE HISTORY SHARED WORK ON SCHOOL MAINTENANCE
Together with the Marcegaglia Foundation, Mission Bambini promoted the call for bids “AT SCHOOL FOR 1 DAY”, aimed at funding ordinary maintenance in seven public schools in northern and central Italy, for the wellbeing of 5,000 pupils. The winning projects, announced in May 2016, were selected among more than 40 proposals made by the employees in the Marcegaglia branches throughout Italy. The total allocations amount to more than 30,000 euros: they have been used to purchase school equipment and the necessary materials to repair and renovate decaying buildings, to repaint classrooms, halls, gratings and gates, to clean and make outside areas accessible, to convert unused rooms into laboratories and to buy furniture.
EMPLOYMENT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Together with the Canali Onlus Foundation, San Zeno Foundation, UniCredit Foundation and Manageritalia Milano - Gruppo Volontariato Professionale, Mission Bambini promoted the second edition of the national fundraising bid “Let Us Find an Occupation!”. The results of this nation-wide call, with a total funding of 504,940 euros, were announced in May 2016, and to-date 7 projects are already under way with the common aim of promoting first working experiences for young people between 16 and 29 by means of social enterprises. These organizations have selected or are currently selecting the first young persons to employ and are starting to manufacture and sell goods and/or services. In most cases, these activities are already producing an income.

EMERGENCIES
Through the call for bids “Community Welfare and Social Innovation”, the Cariplo Foundation chose the progettonovepiu “Nove+” as winning project, put forward by Mission Bambini and 14 partners, among which the of Milan City Council Department of education, four schools and eight non-profit organizations based in the Zona 9 district of Milan. The project was launched in April 2016 with a total funding of 1.7 million euros over three years, in favor of 1,500 families with minor children, 3,500 minors (between 6 and 18) and 200 young persons (between 14 and 23).
After an earthquake hit the town of Norcia on October 30, 2016, Mission Bambini and the town council planned to build a new school and nursery school called “Norcia rinasce”. In the following weeks the Prosolidar Foundation – a bilateral body inspired by the Italian “financial institution’s nationwide fund in favor of Onlus solidarity projects” which includes, as equal partners, all the financial sectors’ trade unions and all the companies within the Italian banking association (ABI) and ABI itself – announced the intention of covering the cost of the building, which was officially opened, after a very short time, on December 22.

The main objective of the “Nove+” project is activating the whole community living in the Zona 9 district, so that local inhabitants can take responsibility and play a decisive role in the education of their own children and teenagers, by creating and testing new models of “generative welfare”. The project’s particular aim is focused on detecting the needs connected with education within families and on pointing to possible solutions, on fighting school dropouts and on promoting working opportunities for young people. To-date 5 community centers have been opened, where local families can find counsel and support; new IT learning equipment has been donated to local schools, together with teachers’ training on how to use it; counselling and vocational training are being provided to young people.
“The proposal of financing the new school in Norcia – said Giancarlo Durante, lawyer and President of the Prosolidar Foundation – came from the Mission Bambini Foundation. We were already collecting donations for the people living in the earthquake affected areas in central Italy and we decided to cover the costs of this building project because it responds to the needs of the most fragile members of society, that is infant children, and because the plan had extremely short implementation deadlines, which were met with absolute precision”.
