Bear for a Day
Corey R. Tabor • Greenwillow Books 2026 • LE
Caldecott Honor and three-time Geisel Award–winning author and illustrator
Corey R. Tabor offers an inspiring –and surprising – funny picture book, dynamically illustrated from a bear’s perspective. If you were a bear for a day, what would you do? Probably wake up, eat breakfast, go for a motorcycle ride, and rescue your best friend from a rogue hot air balloon. You know, normal bear stuff! You certainly wouldn’t stand in front of the whole class and give a boring, detailed, and informational report about bears.

La
Golondrina (Books That Sing)
Sonia De Los Santos
Norton Young Readers • 2026 • LE
Latin Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter Sonia De Los Santos’s debut bilingual (English/Spanish) picture book is a hopeful and lyrical ode to family, home, and the journeys we make to create them. This joyful story captures a young girl’s fascination with the migratory swallow that sings in the trees outside her grandmother’s home in Mexico. With dreamlike wistfulness, she speaks to the bird about the long journey northward that it is about to undertake to find food and a new home – much like the one her own father is making, and the one she will someday make, too.

In this vibrant follow-up to his travelogue, My Antarctica, author G. Neri recalls his family’s reallife journey in a station wagon crossing 26 states in seven weeks, with only the aid of paper maps and transistor radios. Countries Around the World is an exciting nonfiction series that takes young readers on a journey to explore the everyday lives, traditions, and wonders of countries across the globe. A Interview with Author Sara Amini and Illustrator Shadia Amin
Author Sara Amini and artist Shadia Amin team up for this charming, semiautobiographical middle grade graphic memoir that explores evolving friendships, puberty mishaps, and finding a place to belong. Navigating life as a multiracial girl has never been more hilarious or heartfelt, with family, friendship, and fuzz as it is in Mixed Feelings! Perfect for fans of Real Friends, The New Girl, and Pizza Face.
Sara, Mixed Feelings is based on your middle school years. How did it feel to return to that time of your life during the writing process?
Sara: I have such vivid memories of that era of my life (and had enough disposable cameras to document it all!). Combing through old photos helped me set myself in 1999, back to being 12 years old and trying to juggle being multiracial, the firstborn daughter of immigrants, and a kid just trying to find her place to belong. It was often tricky, confusing, and overwhelming. Luckily, I had family, friends, and drama club to always see the best in me, even when I didn’t see it in myself.
Some moments have been fun to revisit, like I still can’t believe I SHAVED OFF MY EYEBROW. (Fun fact: I tried to tell everyone at school that my siblings did it in my sleep, and no one believed me!) Others, like the TV audition, were tougher, because now as an adult, I saw the experience through my mom’s eyes for the first time. But getting to relive all the moments, good and bad, has definitely made me appreciate those middle school years, because they shaped me into the person I am today.
Shadia, how did your experience as a multiracial person inform your work on Mixed Feelings? What did you feel was most important to convey in your art?
Shadia: The most important aspect was diversity, ensuring that kids could see themselves represented not continued…
Sara Amini and Shadia Amin
only in the main characters but also in the background characters, letting them know their experiences are shared and they can bond with others over them.
Each character in Mixed Feelings has a distinct personality. Sara, which character did you enjoy writing most and why? Shadia, which character did you enjoy drawing most and why?
Sara: Not only are these my real family and friends, but also my real childhood home and middle school! Seeing them all come to life in my old environments has been incredible.
I must admit, I’ve enjoyed writing Aneliese the most because the real Aneliese still makes me laugh every single day. She doesn’t start out that way in this book, but she gets super sarcastic as the series goes on, and it always makes me giggle writing her deadpan expressions and underher-breath remarks. Also, my siblings, Davud and Mimi, have always been both effortlessly and painfully cooler than me, so I’ve delighted in turning their book characters into rascals, who agitate Sara at every turn. Sorry, guys! I wrote the book, so I get to make the rules!
Shadia: It’s hard to say. So many of them were so much fun. I’d say Sara and Dom, since they’re both such expressive characters. I always have a blast trying to push their facial expressions and body language.
What’s the collaboration process like working on a graphic memoir that reflects one cocreator’s lived experience? Sara, in what ways did Shadia’s art influence your storytelling? Shadia, in what ways were you able to apply your own individual touch on something so personal to Sara?
Sara: Shadia’s art is inherently hilarious, so we clicked from the very beginning. We both had the same idea in mind for the series: finding the “funny,” even among the more heartbreaking moments, because laughing through pain can be so therapeutic and powerful. We had
many virtual work sessions where I’d act out scenes for her, and she’d take that and run with it.
She’s a big fan of anime and manga, and using those mediums’ methods of pushing boundaries and heightening emotions made for some laugh-out-loud expressions from the characters in the story! I always knew I wanted to revisit those awkward middle school years through a humorous lens, and getting to watch myself grow up again through Shadia’s eyes is the best!
Shadia: Surprisingly, Sara and I had similar experiences growing up, including issues with body hair. I always have fun with my art, pushing the emotions and making sure people connect with what the characters feel. I think that’s how I was able to ensure Sara’s writing translated into visual art with the same emotions and impact.

What could go wrong on the first day of sixth grade?
A: You wake up with leg hair out of nowhere.
B: You have zero classes with your BFF and watch her run off with her new (annoying) friend.
C: You struggle to decide which school club to join because being multiracial makes you feel like you don’t belong anywhere.
D: All of the above. SERIOUSLY?!

Just One Gift
Linda Sue Park • Clarion Books • 2026 • UE
Exploring themes of community and gratitude, Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park captures the diverse voices of a lively classroom discussion in a thought-provoking story told through linked poems. The assignment: If you could give someone special in your life a present – just one gift – who would you choose, and what would it be? Discuss. Certain students know their answers right away. A few find their answers more slowly. And while some responses spark lively conversation, others are revealed only in the privacy of journal pages. An Author Interview with Katherine Applegate
Go behind the scenes with Newbery Medal–winning author and literary superstar Katherine Applegate as she discusses her return with two exciting new titles releasing in spring! First up is The Littlest Elephant, a picture book adaptation of the best-selling middle grade novel The One and Only Ruby, chronicling protagonist Ruby’s early life in Africa through her Tuskday celebration. The second is Wombat Waiting, a stunning new middle grade standalone about compassion, resilience, and surprising friendships, following a dog named Wombat in the aftermath of a catastrophic fire.
You’ve written about Ruby the elephant in the One and Only novels. How was it different to write her story for a younger audience for the picture book The Littlest Elephant?
I’ve discovered that collaborating with a talented illustrator makes all the difference when you’re sharing a story with a younger audience. So much information can be conveyed via the art. A classic example: Instead of my describing Ruby’s emotions, Lita Judge was able to eloquently show them with her beautiful illustrations. From a writer’s point of view, it makes everything so much easier!
You actually suggested the illustrator Lita Judge for this picture book. Have you worked with her before? Do you have a favorite scene from her illustrations?
I’d never worked with Lita before, but I’ve always loved the way she brings animals to life in her books. Their faces are so expressive and charming!
Katherine Applegate
We were both attending a wonderful book festival in Michigan a while back (Harbor Springs Festival of the Book), and on our way to the airport, we started hatching plans to work together on a project. We didn’t know it would be The Littlest Elephant at that point, but we both knew animals would figure prominently!
It’s truly hard to choose just one favorite scene in The Littlest Elephant –they’re all so gorgeous – but there’s a night scene I really cherish. We see Ruby as a baby in Africa, protected by her family. She’s surrounded by a forest of legs and gleaming tusks, and Ruby thinks: How beautiful we are. You can just feel her contentment and joy.
Your next novel is titled Wombat Waiting, but it’s not actually about a wombat. Instead, Wombat is the name of a dog. Have you ever met a wombat?
I have not. But it’s definitely on my to-do list! Wombat is a stray dog who’s rather round, with short legs, a stubby tail, and little ears. A boy named Henry, a booklover who’s been reading about Australia, notes that the homeless dog resembles a wombat, and before long, everyone is calling her that.
It turns out that Wombat is a “destiny dog” – a dog whose fate is to track down her person, the human with whom she’s meant to spend her life. Destiny dogs are the ones who show up on our doorsteps unannounced. The ones who seem to know us better than we know ourselves.
Wombat Waiting is a novel in verse – your One and Only novels are short prose chapters with big impact. Why did you decide to write Wombat in this format, and how was it different from writing in prose?
I think it’s important to remember that free verse doesn’t just mean random line breaks. You need to have a reason for choosing the format.
Every word counts. Even the white space provides a kind of music.
I’ve written two other novels in verse: Home of the Brave and Odder. In the first, I wanted to convey the challenges that come with learning a new language. With Odder, I needed a way to express the exuberance and lyricism of a life lived in the ocean.
In Wombat Waiting, a lonely street dog is searching for her person –her destiny – guided by nothing more than a vague internal voice. She’s moving through a chaotic and devastated landscape: southern California during a terrible wildfire.
Writing her story in free verse felt like the perfect way to capture her confusion, desperation, and longing.
Animals of all kinds play important roles in all of your books. Do you have a favorite animal in your life right now?
I’m owned by two rescue dogs, Astrid and Boss. Both were found on the streets of Los Angeles and taken in by kind humans.
Poor Astrid, who looks a bit like a miniature golden retriever, had been beaten as a puppy. Her neck was broken, and she was almost put to sleep. But with lots of TLC, she survived. We were told she could never play with other dogs. But she was so miserable, we asked her surgeon if a small canine companion might be okay.
That turned out to be Boss, a small pug with an outsize ego. We named her after a character in The One and Only Bob (Bob’s sister). And we couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate name! She definitely rules the roost. And, she’s been the perfect therapy dog for Astrid.

The Littlest Elephant
(A One and
Only Ruby
Story)
Katherine Applegate • Storytide • 2026 • LE
From the Newbery Award–winning and bestselling author of the modern classic One and Only series comes a gorgeous picture book introducing young readers to Ruby, the beloved baby elephant.

THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN »
Ruby is the littlest elephant in the herd at the animal sanctuary, where she lives near her best friends Ivan the silverback gorilla and Bob the lovable mutt. Ruby loves all the things that make being an elephant fun, like splashing in muddy puddles and spraying water through her trunk. But there are parts of being an elephant that she doesn’t love so much, like her new tusks.
The herd is preparing for Ruby’s Tuskday, a day to celebrate the fact that Ruby is growing up, and a day for remembering. Ruby has lots of happy memories, but she also has lots of sad ones, ones that are hard to think about. Surrounded by the love of her herd and her friends, the littlest elephant will see that growing up doesn’t have to be scary, and that remembering the darkness can help us appreciate the light.
This beautiful and poignant story shows readers the importance of honoring the past, cherishing the present, and facing the future without fear.

Wombat Waiting
Katherine Applegate • Storytide • 2026 • LE
A stunning new middle grade standalone novel about compassion, resilience, and surprising friendships, following a dog named Wombat in the aftermath of a catastrophic fire.
Wombat isn’t actually a wombat, but when the homeless dog is discovered, singed and ash covered after a terrible fire destroys a community, someone tags her with the nickname, and it sticks.
Wombat is a “destiny dog.” Something inside of her (she nicknames it “Voice”) keeps telling her there’s a special someone out there who is meant to be her person.
Surrounded by a devastated town, Wombat takes up residence on a bench near the makeshift community center, an old brick warehouse that, for the most part, survived the flames. A small part of the community center evacuation site has been repurposed for the local wildlife rehab sanctuary that burned down. All of the animals were spared, and the temporary quarters include an elderly fruit bat and a young Northern saw-whet owl.
No matter what, Wombat refuses to move from her perch, despite the efforts of many humans. Clearly the dog is waiting for someone. But for whom? And what are the odds they survived?

An Author Interview with Don Everts
What peculiar thread connects secret superpowers, chicken farming, Victorian architecture, and the impossible awkwardness of being 14?
Debut middle grade author Don Everts weaves it together for us in this conversation about his new book, Oscar and the Mystery of the Glowing Orbs.
Oscar and the Mystery of the Glowing Orbs features a 14-year-old main character. How did it feel to dive back into the mind of a 14-year-old? What were you like at 14?
I loved climbing into the mind of a 14-yearold! It was both exhilarating and hopeful to ride the latest research, my relationships with young teens, and my own fading memories into the glorious, high-stakes land of the middle grade reader. Me at 14? I was insecure and unstoppable, realistic and a dreamer, curious and fearful, discovering who I was and constantly trying to look cool. In other words, I was full of life-giving tensions like most 14-yearolds, I guess.
In the story, Oscar learns that he has a supernatural power, which might feel like a common storyline in middle grade fiction. Why do you think we like reading about the supernatural, and what makes this story different from the other superpower books out there?
For most of us, coming of age involves wondering about our purpose and exploring our giftedness. So, I think the “Wait, I have a special power?” storyline is perfect for middle grade readers! Watching a character discover their unique powers helps us reflect on our own discovery process.
Don Everts
The superpowers in The Sensate Saga are unique because of how subtle they are. No one in Oscar’s school can fly or bend steel. But a few of them have had one of their senses blossom in a special way: one student can see the relational connections between people, another can smell anger, a third can hear anxiety, another can smell hope. There’s something super relatable about these superpowers, and they open a window for the reader to explore how these important realities (relationships, anger, anxiety, hope, etc.) are in play all around them every day. Who needs to bend steel when you can literally see who has a crush on you?
This book takes place at Centerville High School, and, in many ways (if you don’t count the superpowers!), it seems like a typical school. Were any of the people, places, or events in the story based on real-life situations?
A few years ago, my wife and I moved across the state (our rising freshman son in tow!) and moved into a 135-year-old Victorian house. Much of the setting in Oscar and the Mystery of the Glowing Orbs is taken from our new home and new town and new backyard chickens. The Benevolent Booklover Bookstore that Oscar discovers is, alas, a figment of my imagination.
Having your parents move you across the state just before you start high school is incredibly dramatic. It happened to me when I was my son’s age, and I turned around and did the same to him! So, some of the stressful and wonderful and hilarious moments Oscar runs into while starting at a new school are inspired by my own fumbling experience back in the day and my own son’s brave experience over the last few years. As far as I know, my son never developed any superpowers like Oscar!
This book touches on so many topics: disability, race, faith, friendship, and family dynamics to name a few. Why was it important for you to explore themes like this?
Young teens are inherently thoughtful, and these are some of the very important realities they’re dealing with and wondering about. That’s what I love about the “magical realism” genre: you get all the fun and adventure of the supernatural, but you get to interrogate the very real world we’re all trying to live our lives in. Real fun, but super applicable.
For example, Oscar and his friends run into all sorts of real-life issues like anxiety and insecurity. They navigate interactions with friends and parents, they’re offended by discrimination and bullying, they get embarrassed and have each other’s backs, and they share hilarious opinions about the best condiment for tater tots – all while trying to save the world from bad guys. Magical realism is perfect for a fun, but deep story!
What do you want readers to feel and experience when they read Oscar and the Mystery of the Glowing Orbs?
First, I want readers to have a blast! I tried to write a smart, adventurous book I would have loved to read when I was 14: filled with fun characters, an intriguing mystery, solvable codes, thrilling supernatural elements, and a setting I’d like to hang out in.
Second, I’d love for readers to look with new eyes around their own schools. Everything Oscar and his new Sensate friends are experiencing is real-life stuff, and this story invites the reader to look at (and smell and listen to) their own world in new ways. Like every good story, I hope this book helps the reader both feel seen and equipped to see the world around them.
Don Everts
You’ve had a lot of other jobs and interests in your life –working on college campuses, in churches, writing numerous nonfiction books, restoring a Victorian home, amateur chicken farming – so how did you find your way into writing fiction for this age group?
I wound up writing this book because of a failed trip to a big box bookstore. My son had an assignment to read a book written in the last three years. After searching my own library (filled with wonderful novels...all of which were too old) he asked me if I could run to the store to get him one while he finished his history homework. I was ecstatic! My love language is giving and receiving books, and I relished the chance to pick out a fun, but deep novel that would transport him with its story and intrigue him with its honest grappling with the real world.
When I got to the middle grade section of the bookstore, I realized that a wide majority of the books were written for female readers (their pink covers were a dead giveaway). Of the thin slice of books left, there were some that looked fun but not too deep – a few sports-based titles – and others that looked deep but not too fun (issue-specific books focused almost exclusively on getting across a point). I wound up bringing my son two World War Two novels. He wasn’t thrilled.
Later that week, I was complaining about all this to a novelist friend of mine at a barbecue in our friends’ backyard. She nodded thoughtfully as I complained and then said: “Well, you’re a writer. Why don’t you do something about it?” I realized while finishing my tasty brat that I didn’t have a good answer to her question. Next thing you know, I was writing a middle grade novel!
Oscar and the Mystery of the Glowing Orbs is the first book in The Sensate Saga. Can you give us a sneak peek into the books that will follow?
The series follows the unfolding story of Oscar and his friends, but each book has a different protagonist. So, Oscar will be in book two, but another one of his Sensate friends will take center stage. Literally! Without giving away too much, I’ll just say that the bombshell at the end of book one is just the first in a series of surprises as Oscar and his friends realize the mystery is much larger – and more dangerous –than they ever would’ve guessed. Also, book two has plenty of cats, video games, and mysterious bad guys!

Oscar and the Mystery of the Glowing Orbs Don Everts • IVP Kids • 2026 • MS
What if you could see things no one else could?
Meet Oscar, a new kid navigating life in a new town, at a new school, with no friends to lean on. Just as he’s decided to shuffle his way through freshman year and settle for lonely lunches on the football bleachers, something extraordinary happens – Oscar begins to see glowing orbs that no one else can see. Confused and curious, he soon discovers he’s not the only one at his school with a mysterious power.
When chaos disrupts Centerville High, Oscar finds himself in the middle of an eclectic group of kids who all want answers and are eager to take action! These zealous teen journalists and amateur detectives include other “Sensates” – kids like Oscar who have unique powers. No longer alone, Oscar discovers that those orbs he’s been seeing might just be put to good use.
