An Author Interview with

Kim Michele Richardson My Kentucky Moonlight School is a delightful picture book based on the early 20th century’s real-life Moonlight Schools. Pairing engaging, authentic text with vibrant, energetic artwork, best-selling Kentucky author Kim Michele Richardson crafts a heartfelt and timely reminder of the power of education to connect and change lives. In this interview, discover the inspiration behind this story and key takeaways she hopes readers will have from it. Like all your work, My Kentucky Moonlight School is strongly rooted in a particular place and community. How is place important to you? It’s very true that books can carry you anywhere, even back home, so as a native-born Kentuckian, and having all my books written in Kentucky, it’s been personal and one of my greatest honors to help spread literacy and honor the literacy pioneers that came before me. Kentucky has such a rich and unique literacy history in the world, and there’s always been the strong belief that literacy accessibility for all is critical. Now more than ever we see its importance for everyone. Teachers and teaching are at the heart of the story. Are teachers especially important to you? I have mad love and respect for teachers. Every day, educators are making a difference. They’re without a doubt the greatest gems of the earth – the important lifelines who shape future generations, motivate, grow readers into leaders, and ensure a brighter and better future for students and their families and communities.

17

continued…

Kim Michele Richardson How did you come across Cora Wilson Stewart? I introduced Cora in several of my adult novels – The Book Woman’s Daughter and The Mountains We Call Home: The Book Woman’s Legacy. Now through the eyes of Jewel, an eight-year-old Appalachian child, My Kentucky Moonlight School shines a brighter light on Kentucky’s historic Moonlight Schools, founded in 1911 by educator Cora Wilson Stewart of Farmers, Kentucky. The schools were only offered at night and only when the moon was bright enough to light the dangerous mountain paths adults needed to cross to get to the one-room school houses. A prolific educator, Stewart also became the first founder of the US adult literacy movement, helping thousands and thousands around the nation to learn to read and write. Stewart’s story stayed with me long after I first discovered her powerful movement to educate not only Kentuckians, but [also] Native Americans, Black Americans, new immigrants, and prisoners across the US, to free them from the shackles of illiteracy – and to help them climb out of poverty. This nearly forgotten educator and her footnote in history were profound – moving. And I immediatedly recognized her lifelong battle to stamp out illiteracy, what she called “a war without the loss of human blood, a war fought with the book and pen.” Do you enjoy writing for a different audience than your novels? How does the experience differ? Writing a children’s book is truly challenging, and I stand in awe of children’s authors and artists. I find it more difficult to write a 700-word children’s book than to write a 75,000-word novel for adults. Still, it’s always been my belief that art, music, and storytelling cannot exist without one another. Every work should weave a tapestry of all three, and the greatest storytelling tangles a hymnal of beats across an artist’s palette. So to have the historic Moonlight Schools come alive through the talented artist Chloe Giroux has been a deep joy and privilege to witness.

18

What do you hope readers will take away from My Kentucky Moonlight School? The themes in My Kentucky Moonlight School continue to resonate today as educators and families work tirelessly to encourage reading among younger generations. Literacy can change lives and empower the powerless and connect us all in unexpected and beautiful ways. So no matter the age or our differences, the message is ageless because this is the powerful magic of books.

My Kentucky Moonlight School

Kim Michele Richardson Norton Young Readers • 2026 • LE Best-selling author Kim Michele Richardson’s picture book, My Kentucky Moonlight School, celebrates Kentucky’s pioneering “moonlight schools,” the first official adult literacy movement in the US. An Author Interview with

Adam Rex

Award-winning author and illustrator Adam Rex is back with the fourth installment of the highly acclaimed early reader chapter book series, The Story of Gumluck and the Portrait Thief. The queen’s portrait has been stolen, but luckily, Gumluck’s crew is on the case! Join Adam in a playful question and answer where he speaks on his process, fan-favorite (and not-so-favorite) characters, and outfit choices, which is totally relevant. Particularly in the Gumluck series, but in all your author-illustrator work, text and art lean on each other, so to speak. What does the writing process look like for you as author and illustrator? Do you start with art or words? I almost exclusively start with the words, but there’s a give-and-take as I go. Sometimes writing is a lot of he-saids and she-saids, and it’s nice to break that up with an image and a word balloon. Or I realize a page turn to an unexpected picture will hit harder than a line of prose that reads, “Suddenly, they were surrounded.” So maybe I never write that line, not even in the first draft, but rather indicate parenthetically that an illustration is going to step in. I like being able to think of illustrations as part of the tool kit that turns the nuts and bolts of the story, rather than as some extraneous embellishment waiting every 10 pages or so like a prize for progress. When I’m making a story, first and foremost I need you to understand what’s happening. After understanding, I’m going to see if I can get you to feel something. If I really do my job, you’ll

36

continued…

Adam Rex feel more than you understand. Prose blurs the line into poetry when it does that, but the right image can run 10 laps around your heart in the time it takes you to read a line of text. Also, sometimes I just like to put in a funny picture of a pig’s bottom. Helvetica may not be the title character, but she’s an important foil to Gumluck’s bumbling noodle-headedness. Do you think she’s a reliable narrator? That’s an interesting question. If I bristle a little, it’s only because I don’t believe Helvetica ever lies. She’s sometimes wrong, but if you can show her she’s wrong, she admits it, which already makes her more reliable than half the people I meet. Is there a redemption arc in store for Prince Whoop-de-doo? Boy, I don’t know. I think I already do more to humanize him in this book than I ever expected to – the longer I spend with a character, any character, the more they turn into a person. I guess that’s how it tends to work with the characters you meet in real life, too, now that I think of it. In The Story of Gumluck and the Portrait Thief, we do learn that Prince Whoop-de-doo is, in a sense, just a little boy who misses his mommy. But that doesn’t make him not a fink. He’s got a lot of work to do. If I ever get a book that I know ahead of time to be the last in the series, maybe I’ll put him through it. In Portrait Thief, do you think the museum guards were embarrassed that they all wore the same outfit? I realized police officers have this problem, too! I decided to see if I could get an answer: So no, I didn’t get an answer.

37

An Author Interview with

Lois Lowry

Two-time Newbery Award-winning author Lois Lowry returns with a new dystopian novel in the tradition of her best-known book, The Giver. Building 903 is set in the not-so-distant future, in a world devoid of creativity and imagination. When protagonist Tessa’s twin brother, Theo, goes missing, she and her parents must use the newly discovered power of stories to find and save Theo and set imagination free. Deep dive into the imagination of Lois in this question-and-answer interview! Building 903 takes us to the year 2099. What do you find most interesting and most frightening when imagining what the future might bring? The most frightening is the thing I avoided writing about: what science and technology will bring to us in the coming decades. But I was the kid who successfully made my way through high school, college, and graduate school without ever taking a chemistry, physics, or higher-mathematics course. My curiosity lay elsewhere and still does, so I wasn’t equipped to hypothesize what technological dangers lie ahead in a post-nuclear age. Instead I focused on something that seems to me equally frightening: the collapse of a free and fair electoral system. But there are positives, as well, which will certainly be true in our own future world: speed and ease of travel, for one. Next month, for example, I have to get myself from Portland, Maine, to Nashville, Tennessee; it means a long day of tedious and expensive travel. In Tessa and Theo’s world it would be a simple whoosh.

55

continued…

Lois Lowry Was there any particular moment, event, or headline that helped inspire the world that Tessa and Theo live in? The one particular ongoing and distressing process that has been much in the news, and which has been gnawing at me, has been the gradual dissolution and abandonment of the study of literature in high schools and colleges. Tessa, my fictional character, is a bright 14-year-old girl who has never read a story or a novel. But for a school assignment she’s taking meticulous notes on the production of asphalt. Something has gone terribly wrong there. The magic of books is an important element in the story. How do you think books transport and transform us? Do you think books have the power to save the world? I don’t think books per se have that power, but the combination of information and imagination does, and right now, books are the vehicle for that. In the future, eventually, the rectangular paged objects that we now call books will probably not exist, but whatever methodology supplants them – whatever causes human minds to expand and empathize and experience emotion – that’s what will save the world. If books were being outlawed and destroyed in our world, what are some that you would want to box up and hide away? I’d box up the same children’s books that Miriam Allinson did in Building 903, but I’d add to that (a lot of boxes!) the entire reading list from the curriculum at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. What was the hardest part about writing this story? I made a bit of a departure in this book. We who write for young people are very aware that our readers enjoy reading about their peers – the interactions among people their age. They’re not particularly interested in the parents, who generally appear largely offstage in YA books, but I made a conscious (though difficult) decision that this book would be primarily

56

about two 14-year-old kids – and their mother and father, and one much older woman. The hard part was to try to make those nonteenage characters complex and interesting. What’s something about life today that you hope readers will ponder after reading Building 903? I say this so often to the many, many young people who email me every day with questions: you’re the ones who’ll create the future. I hope they’ll ponder the responsibility that places upon them and at the same time become happily aware that they can make things better.

Building 903

Lois Lowry • Clarion Books • 2026 • UE A profound addition to two-time Newbery Award–winner Lois Lowry’s enduring body of work, Building 903 centers around a world ruled by a tyrannical leader where imagination is revolution. When protagonist Tessa’s twin brother disappears, nobody wants to discuss it, but then her 135-yearold neighbor slips her a key – not only to her brother’s disappearance, but to the source of all real magic: books. Tessa learns that they not only tell stories, but open portals and unlock our humanity through our most powerful tool: the imagination. 2082DL0

Héroes de 1776: La historia de la Declaración de Independencia (Heroes of 1776: The Story of the Declaration of Independence)

An Author Interview with

Pedro Martín

Pedro Martín is the Newbery Honor Award, Pura Belpré Author and Illustrator Award–winning creator of the graphic memoir Mexikid, based off his online comic series of the same name. In this extraordinary graphic memoir companion, Mexikid Dreams, hilarious family hijinks, immigration patrols, and musical daydreams shape a year of growth and change for a Mexican American boy. As he learns more about his parents’ and abuelito’s past, and the choices they made in order to open up more choices for him, he starts to understand that freedom isn’t just about leaving the fields – it’s about knowing where you came from and having the courage to draw your own life. What three words would you choose to describe Mexikid Dreams? Funny, tragic, and hopeful. Mexikid was a hit with kids and gatekeepers across the board. How did you decide on what to write next for young Pedro in Mexikid Dreams? I really wanted to tell the rest of the story when it came to my family. In the first book, we visited a magical place full of history and wonder. It was a road-trip story full of laughter and adventure. In this book, we visit a place where the work was hard and financial survival is always on the line. It’s the same family full of love and laughter, but this time the stakes are higher.

continued…

Pedro Martín You’ve done a lot of school visits and have met a lot of readers since Mexikid won Newbery Honor and Pura Belpré awards. Did that experience impact how you approached Mexikid Dreams? Oh my gosh, yes! I wrote the first book in isolation during the pandemic. And for all intents and purposes it was a story I was telling to only one person, my editor, Kate Harrison. But when I ventured out and met the real audience, I was truly humbled. The kids were so enthusiastic and so earnest in their love of that story that I swore to myself I would make sure any future stories I tell will honor their sweet little monkey souls.

best when we identify with the humanity of others. We’re at our worst when we demonize and mistreat those who can’t defend themselves. What’s happening today is a horrific lack of empathy on the part of the state. A movement that strips away the humanity of our friends and neighbors for political gain. It might be too late to change the hearts of those in power, but it isn’t too late to help the next generation learn about the all the wonderful things that immigrants bring with them when they seek a place to prosper.

But the real kicker was when this one kid came up to me and pointed at the cover and said, “That’s me! I’m Mexikid!” I suddenly realized how important it was for these kids to see themselves represented in literature. It was something I didn’t have growing up. Seeing it suddenly in front of me was very powerful. Mexikid Dreams has just as much heart and humor as the first book (if not more). How do you balance both of those while also telling the history of a family and community? Humor in the face of hardship has always been a mainstay in communities that struggle. It’s the one free gift that we give ourselves when faced with obstacles. First we laugh at the obstacles, and then we laugh at ourselves. And then our brothers and sisters laugh at us. And then we get mad at our brothers and start hurling over-ripe strawberries at their heads. It’s more complicated than it needs to be. What do you hope readers take away from both books? I hope that by writing a very personal story based on real people, the readers will come to see the world through different eyes. That they’ll come to have compassion for those whose struggles are different from their own and connect with their diverse hopes and fears. We’re at our

A whimsical adventure full of magic, fantastical road trips, and a sapphic friends-to-lovers romance—for fans of Sorcery of Thorns and Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries. All magic begins in stories. That’s what Fae princess Hyacinth has always been told. As the unmagical daughter of Queen Mab, Hyacinth has never fit in at her mother’s court. She hopes that if she learns about her father, who disappeared fifteen years ago, she will finally start to understand herself.

Read it with the book club guide!

When Hyacinth and her friend Chloe—a human stablehand trapped in Fae—sneak off to a riverside night market, Hyacinth discovers a bit of her father’s story: he was last seen heading to a library at the heart of a treacherous labyrinth. The problem: The labyrinth was built long ago by three goddesses, and no one has ever returned from it. Still, Hyacinth has to try.
