Llama Tales subscribers can expect a little less paper in their mailboxes. Beginning in March, Folklorama’s long-running newsletter will enter a new era of digital distribution, shifting from a paperbased quarterly to a monthly electronic newsletter. Subscribers of the monthly e-newsletter will receive timely monthly updates on all Folklorama news and updates, its yearround activities, volunteer opportunities and member events. Organizational information and member updates will also be included in each issue, helping you stay connected with Folklorama year-round. “The idea is to streamline how and when our members receive information,” says Liz Kovach, Director of Member and Festival

Services at Folklorama. “In the past, it’s been a lot of one-off information on top of what was already inside the newsletter. This new e-newsletter puts everything our members and volunteers need to know into one easy-to-read place.” The new electronic newsletter is just one of the ways Folklorama is committed to going green. Reducing paper and ink waste is a critical step in creating a more sustainable operation and a brighter future for our community. All members will automatically begin receiving Folklorama’s new e-newsletters starting in early March. Any subscribers who may not have access to email can contact the Folklorama office to arrange for delivery of a printed copy.

It’s no secret that there’s a powerful sense of camaraderie that develops between Folklorama’s Ambassadors during festival time. Lifelong friendships are born as our pavilion representatives share their stories and experiences with each other, leading to the excitement you can feel in every pavilion for two incredible weeks. In late 2012, Team Folklorama – Youth Division was created to carry this spirited energy throughout the rest of the year, creating a platform for youth volunteers to stay in touch with each other outside of the festival, while maintaining a valuable connection to Folklorama. Team Folklorama – Youth Division engages current and past youth volunteers in year-round activities that both promote Folklorama in the community and offer valuable professional experiences for our youth, as well as provide them mentorship and skill building opportunities. Though the initiative is still new, our team has already been out to a few events that have kept our volunteers buzzing: Backstage Access to RRC’s Annual Welcome Party Youth volunteers were given the chance to see what goes on inside Folklorama’s Talent and Teachings departments, with backstage access to meet and mingle with many different cultural entertainers before the show.

Jam Night Musical Workshop African drummer Bola Oriyomi, Caribbean steel pan/ drummer Clyde Heerah and jawbone harpist Robert Malo hosted an evening for youth volunteers to learn about different sounds and musical traditions from around the world. Extending the Holiday Cheer with Winnipeg Harvest Riding the holiday high well into January, youth volunteers rolled-up their sleeves and helped Winnipeg Harvest sort potatoes at their warehouse facility. Working together, they sorted over 2,000 pounds of potatoes that will go on to feed more than 200 families across Canada. Happy New Year! It is indeed with optimism that Folklorama enters our 43rd year of operation. The incredible collaboration put forth by the board, staff, members and volunteers is what moves us forward – and it is this teamwork that will continue to be Folklorama’s strategy for success. Preparations for the 2013 Festival are well underway and once again we are gearing up for another successful event. Folklorama’s Talent, Teachings, and Travel Programs are also working hard to ensure that Folklorama has a presence in the community year-round, to generate both revenue and awareness related to all of the important things that we do. Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on the horizon and on behalf of the organization, I’d like to personally extend an invitation to every member to attend the meeting on March 21. Following the AGM, various committees will be established. Please contact the office if you are interested in serving on a Folklorama committee. As we begin 2013, I am excited about the year ahead.
