angie Boehm receives award for volunteer Leadership “

I

f you want to affect change, get involved,” says Angie Boehm, Chair of Membership Committee for Folklorama and recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Service Award for Leadership of Volunteers – an award given by the Manitoba Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) to honour a leader in the field of volunteer administration.

Angie works as the administrator of volunteer services at Health Sciences Centre (HSC), where she manages a dedicated group of 120 community volunteers who help in HSC’s day to day operations.

“I think it’s very important to become part of your community, not just your cultural community.

You need to be part of your overall community,”

says Angie. “As we engage in organizations as volunteers, it allows organizations to reflect the community in which they operate. It makes organizations stronger and, in turn, able to provide the services the community needs.”

Angie has been a volunteer for as long as she can remember. She is a member of Centro Caboto, MAVA, the Canadian Administrators of Volunteer Resources and the Human Resource Management Association of Manitoba. Angie has also served as a soccer convener for four years, and is responsible for putting together a soccer program in her community. This year is Angie’s second year on the Folklorama Board of Directors.

Dr. Rayleen de luca to be inducted into the order of manitoba

D

r. Rayleen De Luca, Chair of Licensing Committee for Folklorama, is a recipient of our province’s highest honour, the Order of Manitoba. Established under special legislation, the Order of Manitoba recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour, benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economic well-being of Manitoba and its residents.

Dr. De Luca is a registered clinical psychologist and professor in the department of psychology at the University of Manitoba and is internationally recognized for her pioneering research and approach to treatment for victims of abuse,

particularly child abuse. She received the 2008 YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in Health and Wellness and the Outreach Award from the president of the University of Manitoba. Dr. De Luca was also awarded the 2010 Clifford Robson Award in recognition of her distinguished contribution to the profession of psychology.

Dr. De Luca is passionate about community service and is an active member of the Italian community. She also helped in the development of the Brazilian Pavilion and has been a Folklorama volunteer for over 35 years.

This year is her third year on the Folklorama Board of Directors.

The Order of Manitoba investiture ceremony will take place on July 12 in Manitoba’s Legislative Building. Congratulations!

New specialty tours give folklorama fans more Access F

olklorama is looking to welcome even more people to the festival by adding two new types of tours to the VIP World Tour program, doubling the number of specialty tours available during Folklorama. New this year are the VIP Mingle Tour and Wheelchair Accessible Tour, giving more festival goers easy access to culture, live entertainment and delicious food.

“Each year, hundreds of thousands of people visit Folklorama to experience and enjoy the many diverse cultures in Manitoba.

Adding two more specialty tours specifically designed to attract different audiences allows the festival to cater to new demographics, making Folklorama even more diverse,” says Murray S. Greenfield, Director of Tourism at Folklorama.

Specialty VIP World Tours: • VIP Mingle Tour: $74.95 - luxury motorcoach transportation - admission to three pavilions, including two shows and a late night party - meal and domestic alcoholic beverage at first pavilion, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage at second pavilion, two cultural alcoholic beverages at third pavilion

• Wheelchair Accessible Tour: $48.95 - easy-access bus transportation - admission to one pavilion with a show - meal and cultural alcoholic beverage

• VIP Late Night Tour: $74.95 - luxury motorcoach transportation - admission to three pavilions, including three shows - meal and domestic alcoholic beverage at first pavilion, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage at second pavilion, appetizer and cultural alcoholic beverage at third pavilion

• VIP Party Tour: $74.95 - luxury motorcoach transportation - admission to three pavilions, including two shows and a late night party - meal and domestic alcoholic beverage at first pavilion, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage at second pavilion, two cultural alcoholic beverages at third pavilion

The VIP Mingle Tour is geared towards singles looking for a fun and exciting atmosphere to socialize and meet new people.

Pavilions on the tours differ per week, ensuring singles can try new things and experience new cultures.

VIP Mingle Tour participants will enjoy a show with live entertainment at the first two pavilions and a late night party with music and dancing at the third pavilion. Participants will also receive a meal and domestic alcoholic beverage at the first pavilion, a dessert and non-alcoholic beverage at the second pavilion and two cultural alcoholic beverages at the third pavilion.

The Wheelchair Accessible Tour is specially arranged for persons in wheelchairs needing easy and convenient access during Folklorama. Registered participants are picked up at a designated Canad Inns Destination Centre location in an easy-access bus and then shuttled to the scheduled pavilion for the night. Participants are ushered into the pavilion VIP style, then enjoy a meal and cultural alcoholic beverage at their reserved table.

Wheelchair Accessible Tour participants will enjoy the arranged VIP tour to one pavilion with live entertainment, meal and cultural alcoholic beverage.

Folklorama fans can also book a seat on returning specialty tours: the VIP Late Night Tour and the VIP Party Tour. And of course, all VIP World Tours include quick and easy access to the festival by bypassing line-ups, reserved seating with table service and transportation from an accessible location.

Folklorama Ambassadors roll up their sleeves at Winnipeg Harvest T

here was no stage with live music or crowd of tourists wielding cameras at the first official 2011 Folklorama ambassadors’ appearance at Winnipeg Harvest on June 2.

The ambassadors were not even in their usual cultural attire.

Instead, they were instructed to do two things: wear closed-toe shoes and bring a non-perishable food item.

“Folklorama ambassadors do a lot within their own communities. We wanted an opportunity for ambassadors to step out and give back to the larger community of Winnipeg,” says Tanya Santini McClelland, Festival Services Coordinator at Folklorama.

After touring Winnipeg Harvest’s newly renovated facility at 1085 Winnipeg Avenue, Folklorama ambassadors rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to help with the daily food bank operations. More than 30 ambassadors helped sort potatoes and onions, separating the good produce from the bad.

Ambassadors also helped assemble boxes for food containers.

This was the first time Folklorama partnered with Winnipeg Harvest.

“It only takes a little bit to help your community,” says Karen Haines, Adult Ambassador, DOTC First Nations Pavilion.

Forty thousand people receive emergency food assistance from Winnipeg Harvest each month. According to Winnipeg Harvest’s 2009 facts, 45 per cent of people receiving food from Winnipeg Harvest are children, and children who recently immigrated to Manitoba are at high risk of living in poverty.

e are now just days away from the start of Folklorama 2011. As the excitement builds and last minute preparations are taken care of, I would like to acknowledge and thank our many dedicated members and volunteers. It is their commitment and hard work that make the festival the incredible event that it is, and they should all be very proud of how they share their cultures with such passion throughout the two weeks of the festival. Thank you for all that you do.

Organizationally, under the direction of a third party consultant, we are continuing to work on the creation of a five-year strategic plan.

We will be implementing the finalized cultural display standards on a trial basis for the upcoming festival and are also continuing to work on setting quality standards for entertainment.

I would like to send a big thank you to my fellow board members for their continued hard work and commitment. Also, thank you to the hard working staff for everything they do to help make Folklorama a success.

Canada day culture W

hat started out to be a cloudy and wet day turned out to be a sunny (and fun!) day at Assiniboine Park on Canada Day, as Folklorama took part in Canad Inns’ Picnic in the Park.

Folklorama ambassadors were in full cultural attire enjoying the nice summer breeze as they greeted the many happy faces at the park on that perfect Friday afternoon. The Folklorama Llama also enjoyed the day’s activities and added to the fun and excitement.

The Folklorama tent was packed with visitors there to watch the live entertainment provided by the Winnipeg Steel Orchestra, Wushu Manitoba and Summer Bear Dance Troupe. Our musical chair competition and limbo contest also got the kids moving and having fun.
