JCI SEN. RENE T. NATIVIDAD

The First JCI Senate Philippines Virtual National President

NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings JCI Senators, 2020 is a challenging year for me to lead the JCI Senate Philippines considering that last March 16 lockdown was imposed by the government in the entire country because of COVID19 pandemic. We started the year well with 8 chapter Inductions, 1 Chapter visitation and 1 Damayan assistance together with PJSF Officers for Taal and Tanauan evacuees. I attended launching of 2020 TOFIL and later of Project W.A.T.C.H, Zoom Meetings of Kasambahay and Kasambuhay and Twinning of Greenlink. During the pandemic, I was able to attend face to face Inductions of 7 Chapters and 3 via Zoom platform. 2 new Chartering Inductions were also done and we reactivated 3 Chapters.. A total of 314 JCI Senators paid their affiliation fees. We aided financially in full and in part our Flagship projects and set aside funds for future retirement of Arline , for a new computer set and Microwave for office use plus funds left for the 2021 Admin, to wit: 1. JCISP STAGES MILESTONE VIRTUAL NATCON

I

n the midst of a pandemic year where determination was tested and horizons were as bleak as the skies of an impending storm, the indomitable spirit of the Filipino leader found resilience which became the beacon of light in a darkness that continues to pervade. Indeed, even the most seasoned of leaders could have wilted in the midst of a war we are deprived of seeing yet whose wrath has claimed lives in almost pell mell fashion. Such seemed the hapless state yet the man at the helm of JCI Senate Philippines saw an opportunity in every difficulty on the road to building a legacy. And while life seemed to have seen a standstill, the virtual world, a world we only knew in recent times, began to rotate full speed and revolutionized the way we live. When the onslaught of the pandemic creeped in and swept away even the thoughts of face to face gatherings, the online sphere suddenly came to life. JCI Senate Philippines, like any other national organization, struggled at the onset after a rollercoaster first two months of inductions and events left and right. Fortunately, a proposal for a virtual get together surfaced as the intricacies of Zoom were carefully scaled by the brilliant minds of JCI Senators, who, after all had been such because of their exemplary work in the JCI movement. And with the restless leader at the helm, 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad toyed with the idea of staging a Virtual National Convention, which, at first was met with overwhelming skepticism because

of the technologically challenged generation from whom many of our esteemed senators find themselves in. A spirited discussion during the Second National Board Meeting held via virtual platform resolved this concern with a vast majority of the 2020 National Board concurring and, as they say, the rest is history. And history, indeed, made its nostalgic color felt as arduous preparations were underway. From appointing a Virtual NATCON Chairperson, carefully selecting committee members, brainstorming of ideas, registration, setting up of a base camp, transparency in identifying reasonable suppliers and trusting the process itself brought that futuristic feel to a historic gathering, albeit, online. As everything settled in their proper places, flirting with history beckoned. Sleepless nights, some extraneous factors and pressures notwithstanding, the sheer determination of JCI Senate Philippines was patent to say the least. It was all systems go and no turning back. The dates, November 21, 2020 and November 22, 2020, became red letter dates on the annals of JCI Senate Philippines’ history. The morning of the first day began with a trip down memory lane as JCI Senate Philippines history was told through a moving audiovisual presentation replete with interviews of National Presidents over the years and significant events that shaped the national organization into what it has become today. Likewise, snapshots of the national organization’s flagship projects all day were presented

with intermittent raffles that got the registrants excited no end. And why not, when you have a record 1,004 registrants in a National Convention that established a second milestone. Thereafter, the Board Meeting of the Philippine Jaycee Senate Foundation took place. After lunch, it was the turn of the 2020 National Board to hold its Fourth Regular Meeting, the final one. Subsequently, the Opening Ceremonies began with the traditional parade of dignitaries of both JCI Senate Philippines and the Philippine Jaycee Senate Foundation followed by the Parade of Chapters and the National Anthem of the Republic of the Philippines. JCI Sen. Herbert Tang, the 2020 National Treasurer, led the JCI Creed and Prayer. Key delegates and guests were acknowledged by JCI Sen. Kit Ordinado, 2020 National SecretaryGeneral. JCI Sen. Mylene Dayrit, the 2020 Virtual NATCON Chairperson, delivered her Opening Remarks shortly thereafter. Subsequently, the man of the hour, JCI Sen. Rene Natividad, 2020 National President, delivered his Welcome Address. The evening was saw two of the four speakers slated for the entire duration of the NATCON delivering their respective lectures which were classified according the core values of the RAISE THE NATION theme of Responsiveness, Thoroughness and Nobility. Mayor Benjamin Magalong of Baguio City delivered his Thoroughness Talk on the topic, “Thoroughness of Contact Tracing: Key to Living with CoVid-19”. Following his talk was that of Former Special Adviser of

National Task Force CoVid-19 and renowned Cardiologist, the 2009 The Outstanding Filipino Physician Awardee, Dr. Anthony Leachon who delivered his Responsiveness Talk on the topic, “CoVid-19 Response and Management: Flattening the Curve”. The exciting “Candidates’ Forum” ensued with 2020 National Secretary-General JCI Sen. Kit Ordinado presenting the members of the ELECOM after which, 2020 ELECOM National Chairperson JCI Sen. Cheila May Pepino, introduced the candidates for the 2021 National Board who each gave a three minute introduction of themselves. The highlight of this part was the first ever 2021 National Presidential Debate between JCI Sen. Gregorio “Greg” Lipa and JCI Sen. Conrado “Conrad” T. Dieza, Jr. with the impeccable moderating by 2020 Virtual NATCON Deputy National Chairperson JCI Sen. Reginald “Reggie” Yu which served as a prefect prelude to the Virtual Fellowship hosted by each of the parties, The Dream Team and The Great Leap Team, to cap off the first day of festivities. Day two of festivities was even busier to say the least, beginning with the selection of the Philippine Jaycee Senate Foundation’s next set of officers for 2021. A recap of the first day of activities ensued and raffle prizes again were in store. 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad called the Opening Plenary Session to order. The routine of playing the National Anthem of the Republic of the Philippines took place. 2020 National Treasurer JCI

4

Sen. Herbert Tang led the recitation of the JCI Creed and Prayer. Thereafter, 2020 National Secretary-General JCI Sen. Kit Ordinado certified the quorum and subsequently reports were delivered. There was an ELECOM time given before the much awaited landmark first Virtual Elections for the 2021 National Board. There was also the Jake Gonzalez Meeting. While elections were ongoing, interviews with the VIP’s of both JCI Senate Philippines and the Philippine Jaycee Senate Foundation spiced up the lunch time festivities. The Closing Plenary Session was, subsequently, underway. The winners for the Elections of the 2021 National Board were declared after which the new Board went into Executive Session to elect the 2021 National Officers. Immediately, thereafter, the Virtual Presidential Ball commenced where 2021 National Treasurer JCI Sen. Herbert Tang and 2021 National Secretary-General JCI Sen. Kit Ordinado assumed their proverbial roles as Lead Reciter of the JCI Creed and Prayer and the person to acknowledge the dignitaries, delegates and guests, respectively. The evening also witnessed the virtual presentation of the 2021 National Board of JCI Senate Philippines led by 2021 National President JCI Sen. Gregorio “Greg” Lipa and the 2021 Philippine Jaycee Senate Foundation Board of Trustees led by 2021 Chairman JCI Sen. Nelson Tan. The highlight of the ball was the Valedictory Address of 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad where he pinpointed the highlights of his colorful term.

The Golden Awards, dubbed as the Temiong Awards of the senate, recognized the outstanding senators in the different fields as well as the different outstanding senate chapters capping it off with the Most Outstanding JCI Senator in the Philippines in the person of JCI Sen. Al Francis Bicharra, the Governor of the Province of Albay. The special talks resumed with the Nobility Talk of NEDA Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua on the topic, “Economic Recovery: CoVid-19 Pandemic Perspective”. This was followed by the Raise the Nation Talk of Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on the topic, “Insights on Raising the Nation From the Ravages of the CoVid-19 Pandemic”. Fellowship galore hosted by JCI Sen. Rikki Kwek-Mathay brought a fitting end to the two day event with the fun and camaraderie that marked every JCI Senate Philippines gathering, albeit, virtually. The Virtual NATCON was not only the 52nd in the history of JCI Senate Philippines. Rather, it made many milestones in the history of the national organization which truly manifested the resilience of JCI Senators in refusing to be cowed by the global pandemic under the 2020 National Board led by one man, 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad, whose vision for brighter JCI Senate Philippines, indeed, paved the way for the realization of the organization’s undying quest to RAISE THE NATION.

JCISP STAGES VIRTUAL 52ND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

J

CI Senate Philippines is fifty-two years old. Many accomplishments of past have built the foundations of the national organization it is today, vibrant and ready to face the challenges of the changing times. Despite the onslaught of the global pandemic that could have stolen the thunder out of the national organization’s array of events, JCI Senators refused to be cowed and found inspiration in embracing the blessings of technology to slay the dragon of the pandemic and emerge victorious. And victorious they have been because under the

6

leadership of 2020 National Vice President for Metro Manila JCI Sen. Leah Santiago, she immediately formed her committee that brainstormed many of the activities which would, otherwise, not have been possible. Hence, the product was a Virtual 52nd Anniversary Celebration of JCI Senate Philippines last September 26, 2020. From an audiovisual presentation on the achievements of the national organization, both past and present, a showcase of accomplishments of different senate chapters brought the house down as many were

astonished at how far the national organization has blazed despite the overwhelming odds. Raffle prizes were overflowing such as return of registration for the 2020 Virtual National Convention which was more than just an attraction to say the least. Prizes were also given for the most creative face shields. The three hour event was a living example of how 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad and his 2020 National Board have navigated the violent seas of the pandemic with the determination of a steadfast JCI Senate Philippines emerging to RAISE THE NATION.

JCISP HOLDS CHRISTMAS CAROLE-OKE PARTY

A

s the entrance of the Yuletide Season signalled the end of a pandemic yet spectacular and milestone achieving year that was, JCI Senate Philippines had everything to be thankful for as it staged the first ever Virtual Christmas Party of the national organization. The organizing committee was led by 2020 National Vice President for Metro Manila JCI Sen. Leah Santiago as JCI Senators from all over the Philippines partook virtually in the party which featured JCI Senators in their red or green Christmasinspired hats, headgears or face

shields, a stark contrast to the face to face Christmas parties of past yet a showcase of the creativity of the JCI Senators who refused to wilt under the pandemic pressure. Raffle prizes flooded the entire party with song numbers from JCI Senate Chapters and JCI Senators alike brought an otherwise dull atmosphere to life as the Christmas spirit was felt virtually in every aspect. The party was held last December 18, 2020 right after the 2021 National Board Planning Session as the event served as a welcome respite

from all the rigors of the year that was, busy one at that despite the onslaught of the global pandemic. The fun and laughter, albeit, virtually, brought cheers to many JCI Senators present as this symbolized the kind of leadership of 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad whose no non-sense ways slayed the obstacles of the pandemic as he led the festivities at base camp in the JCI Senate Philippines Headquarters. It was a unique way to celebrate the Christmas spirit.

THE OUTSTANDING FILIPINO AWARDS: THE 2020 TOFIL SEARCH IS ON

I

n 2016, during the incumbency of JCI Senate Philippines National President JCI Sen. Rogelio “Bicbic” Garcia, TOFIL found a new institutional partner in ANSA Foundation Inc. headed by Mr. Anthony Philip Nocom after Insular Life ended its 24 years partnership with JCI Senate Philippines in 2015. Armed with ANSA commitment as institutional partner and with the approval of the TOFIL Foundation Executive Committee together with National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad, the 2020 TOFIL Awards took off last February 19, 2020 at Club Filipino, Greenhills, San Juan City with 2017 TOFIL Awardee Architect Felino A. Palafox, Jr. as Guest of Honor and Speaker with more than one hundred (100) JCI Senators and guests in attendance. Last March 7, 2020, the Search Committee headed by JCI Sen. Ramon “Monching” Nañadiego started the awards kick-off campaign in Legazpi City, Albay at the Bicol Regional Consultative Committee Assembly through the invitation of 2019 TOFIL Awardee JCI Sen. Noel Rosal, Chairman of the Assembly. It coincided with the re-enactment of the awarding of the TOFIL trophy and medallion to Mayor JCI Sen. Noel Rosal who was not able to attend the 2019 TOFIL Awards Night at the Manila Hotel because of the typhoon. Unfortunately, last March 15, 2020, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte declared a pandemic lockdown in the Philippines affecting all sectors of society. Everyone was ordered to stay

10

home except to buy essential items. The Awards Committee had an emergency meeting via the TOFIL viber group with the Search Committee headed by JCI Sen. Ramon “Monching” Nañadiego and discussed the awards committee’s next move. It was then agreed upon to ensure the safety of everyone. Thus, a decision was made to extend the 2020 Search to May 31, 2021

instead of the usual deadline of August 31, 2020. Likewise, the awarding for 2020 was postponed to December 2021. It is the belief of the Awards Committee that there are more heroes amidst the CoVid-19 pandemic. Protection and safety of everyone are everybody’s concern. The Awards Committee will keep you posted for changes, if any. Thank you to all for your understanding.

Thank you once again and God Bless.

GREENLINK: VOICES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

T

he virtual Renewal of Twinning Agreement between JCI Senate Philippines and JCI Philippine-New York highlighted the launching of GREENLINK in its annual program participated in by outstanding environmental warriors from the Philippines and the United States of America last October 25, 2020 via zoom. JCI Mem. Ann C. Beck, 2020 LO President of JCI Philippine-New York, graced the occasion as the distinguished guest speaker of the virtual renewal event. In his opening remarks, JCI Sen. Rene T. Natividad, 2020 National President of JCI Senate Philippines, said that Greenlink has been one of its advocacies. Setting up Greenlink in schools and communities is an answer to eradicate malnutrition and poverty in the Philippines. Thus, JCI Senate Philippines strongly encourages everyone to engage in Greenlink veggie school garden, as well as, the community to plant veggies in their backyard. Since the teaching system is modular at present, the family could work together and practice green living along with their children at home. “Health is Wealth” is the new normal. The launching of the Veggie School Garden is timely now that the country is in the middle of a pandemic. The aim of this program is to enlighten the children how important it is to eat green leafy vegetables to combat COVID19. Vegetables are rich in vitamins A, C and E which could protect and strengthen the immune system from the

12

unwanted virus. The pandemic has brought down so many jobs and opportunities. So, to be economically friendly, having a garden at home would save each family from buying food which are much safer than the vegetables in the market because these are organic. In addition, JCI Senate Philippines believes that Greenlink also solves poverty. It provides the Filipinos an opportunity to generate income despite the unemployment

caused by this pandemic. With Greenlink initiated by JCI Senate Philippines and being advocated by the outstanding environmental warriors from the United States of America, this program will go a long way and save more on health all over the world. The virtual renewal event was hosted by Ms. Philippines Fire 2019 and 2020 Local Training Director of JCI Manileña JCI Mem. Alexandra Marie M. Dayrit.

THE OUTSTANDING FILIPINO PHYSICIANS AWARDS: A TRIBUTE TO THE MEN IN WHITE

A

n unexpected twist to every man’s life marked to be the worst and unforgettable. Economy shut down at its longest. A lot of companies were forced to close that resulted to the increase of unemployment rate in every part of the world. Dreams had been shattered, list of plans had been cancelled. At some point, the world paused for a while but for the men in white posed for a war. Every minute calls for saving lives. Amid the circumstances and heroic acts, compassion and kindness continuously shine forth in every trying day. To honor these unsung heroes, the JCI Senate Philippines in cooperation with the Philippine Medical Association pays tribute to the modern heroes of these times, our front liners in celebrating the first virtual Outstanding Filipino Physicians 2020 (TOFP 2020 ) via zoom. The event commenced with the opening remarks by the National Chairperson of The Outstanding Filipino Physician Awards, JCI Sen. Mylene Mendoza Dayrit. “A year of 2020 cannot be easily dismissed and utterly unforgettable”, Dayrit said. She added that this current pandemic situation has emphasized the underlying reason why the Outstanding Filipino Physician (TOFP) was conceptualized. It was on March 11, 2007 when a memorandum of agreement was presented and signed by the Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III and 2007 National President JCI Sen. Senen Quiambao to establish the annual

search for TOFP.. Its aims were to conduct an annual nationwide search and showcase the outstanding work of physicians, as well as, to give hope and entice the young medical students and doctors to forego their plans to work abroad. JCI Senate Philippines National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad requested to revive this project without knowing that 2020 was the time to do so. The medical community was in a critical situation as they battled against the killer disease, CoVid-19. A glimpse of hope was seen when former Philippine Medical Association (PMA)

President, Dr. Jose Santiago Jr., and his board agreed to revive the collaboration for 2020. The TRIBUTE TO THE MEN AND WOMEN IN WHITE was attended by the Philippine Medical Association Board, JCI Senate Philippines National Board, TOFP Committee, and distinguished men and women of the Philippine Medical Association, as well as, the grieving family members of the fallen physicians. The following 22 TOFP 2020 awardees were virtually presented by Dr. Realiza Henzon, Chairman of the Committee on Awards of PMA and Dr. Elmer Santos, member of the Committee on
