NATION BY: JCI SEN. ALBERT ALDAY LOGO DESIGN BY: JCI SEN. ARIES B. BALANAY

T

he theme, “RAISE THE NATION”, was chosen relative to the thrust of relevance of JCI Senate Philippines for the year 2020. “RAISE THE NATION” vividly captures the role of JCI Senate Philippines in nation building where JCI Senators serve as shining examples of leadership in the various communities throughout the archipelago where JCI Senate chapters are located thereby inspiring and helping mold the next generation of leaders of our country. The theme lock up logo is comprised of the JCI Senate Philippines logo and the 2020 theme logo separated by a gray bar with the “RAISE THE NATION” theme in bold capital letters as the core values of RESPONSIVENESS, THOROUGHNESS and NOBILITY are found beneath the theme. The core values are strategically found at the base of the lock up logo for they serve as the foundations upon which our nation shall rise. These core values are couched in JCI colors of green, blue and orange symbolizing the significance of Junior Chamber International in nation building. Responsiveness pertains to the quality of reacting quickly and positively as a JCI Senator is honed from his or her JCI roots where a culture of positive change pervades. Thoroughness pertains to the quality of possessing great care and

keen attention to detail sufficiently describing the leadership role of a JCI Senator in society. Nobility pertains to the quality of a ranking member of society aptly portraying the JCI Senate as a badge of honor that lasts a lifetime, a reward for an exemplary JCI career. The theme, “RAISE THE NATION”, is couched in red, symbolizing the energy, strength, power, determination as well as the passion and desire of JCI Senators to bring the country towards achieving greater heights on the map of the world. The theme logo has two red crescent shaped objects found side by side where each end is connected to three people-like objects in JCI color shades of green, blue and orange signifying the role of the JCI Senate Philippines leadership in uniting JCI Senate Chapters across the nation as the entire logo takes the shape of a heart, symbolizing the love that breeds fellowship, the very reason for the existence of JCI Senate Philippines. The theme logo is strategically found on the upper right, signifying the right path which JCI Senators take in leading their respective communities. The gray-colored bar separating the JCI Senate Philippines logo and the theme logo manifests leadership, as symbolized by the JCI Senate Philippines logo, and unity through fellowship, as symbolized by the theme logo, go hand in glove in building a nation’s success.

The man at the helm of JCI Senate Philippines could not have chosen a better setting than the City of Flowers where sea and barter make a perfect combination with a rich Hispanic cultural heritage that has endeared it to many a seasoned traveller. Hailing from every nook and cranny of the archipelago, members of the National Board, the National Officers, the National Committee Chairpersons, the Appointed Officers and JCI Senators from various regions of the country trooped to the Garden Orchid Hotel Convention Center for one awesome evening every JCI Senator would never forget. “I was a bit nervous during the preparations of this National Project W.A.T.C.H. Virtual Kick-Off because of some issues on the budget, connectivity and technical concerns. However, with the partnerships that we have with JCI Senate Philippines, I have faith that we can succeed on this. And indeed, we made it. I’m so happy with the results. It exceeded my expectations. As a matter of fact, I received very good feedbacks from my DepEd friends around the country. Kudos to the Project W.A.T.C.H. Team!” - Romy Parayno (DepEd Special Events Unit Head)

TOFP 2020 GETS SUPPORT OF PMA BOARD BY: JCI SEN. MYLENE MENDOZA-DAYRIT

T

he revival of The Outstanding Filipino Physician (TOFP) Award in 2020 is, indeed, providential. However, the CoVid-19 pandemic, which disrupted lives around the world, made the physicians we liked to recognize, the most overworked citizens fighting to save lives. Hence, we only got to virtually meet with the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Board last July 16, 2020. Representing the senate aside from myself are TOFP 2020 Deputy Chairman JCI Sen. Reginald Yu and 2020 National Director JCI Sen. Josephine “Jo” Llorca. PMA was represented by their president, Dr. Jose Santiago Jr., vice-president Dr. Benito Atienza (TOFP 2009 Awardee), Secretary-General Dr.

Ricardo Batac and two lady governors, Dr. Mimi Sarabia and Dr. Rhodora Goco. PMA is overjoyed to know that TOFP 2020 will award all the physicians who died from March until August 31, 2020, regardless of age, with the TOFP award. They have assigned Secretary-General Dr. Batac to be in charge of providing TOFP with the list of posthumous awardees. They reported that thirty-six (36) of their colleagues have perished as of July 31, 2020. During the August 1, 2020 National Board Meeting, it was approved and seconded that all physicians in active service

AUGUST 15, 2020 VIRTUAL TOFP MEETING WAS ATTENDED BY 2020 NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON JCI SEN. MYLENE DAYRIT, 2020 SCREENING HEAD JCI SEN. ALFONSO “AL” MARAÑA, 2020 DOCUMENTATION HEAD JCI SEN. FRANCISCO “KIKO” PE BENITO, 2020 DEPUTY NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON JCI SEN. REGINALD “REGGIE” YU AND 2020 SEARCH HEAD JCI SEN. REY QUIPIT.

who died during this pandemic regardless of age will be given a special TOFP 2020 trophy. Arch. Ramon Orlina, who made the trophies since 2007, begged off from making this year’s trophy as reported by JCI Sen. Alfonso “Al” Maraña, TOFP Screening Head. Last August 15, 2020, in a virtual committee meeting, other trophy options were discussed and presented. JCI Sen Francisco “Kiko” Pe Benito, TOFP Documentation Head, found another well known sculptor. Peter de Guzman, best known for his Ninoy monument in Ayala and Memorare 1945 in Intramuros, submitted the winning bid. 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad is very happy with the beautiful two-feet trophy which also inspired me to write a fitting descriptive narrative.

The Outstanding Filipino Physician 2020 Trophy White is the color of purity, of the divine. It is also the color of the physician’s gown. The round globe base represents the world or the nation which desperately cried for help represented by the left hand reaching out. The doctor immediately led frontliners and selflessly provided the much needed assistance represented by the right hand. This response became the seed of love from which brotherhood and nationhood will further grow. The intertwined hands will become the wings that will power this nation. Because “service to humanity is the best work of life,” the brave sacrifice of our fallen doctors will forever be remembered and will forever inspire a resilient nation that will rise again from the ravages of the pandemic.

LAMITAN CHAPTER VISITATION: A VISITATION LIKE NO OTHER

T

he sojourn to the City of Zamboanga is often coupled with a side trip to the City of Lamitan in the Province of Basilan. As part of the induction festivities, JCI Sen. Alex Estabillo, 2020 President of JCI Senate Lamitan, took the opportunity to organize a one-of-a-kind adventure to the City of Lamitan with many JCI Senators eagerly anticipating a rest and recreation side trip. The 2020 National Chairperson for Chapters Visitation JCI Sen. Maria Rosario “Sharkki Silverio of JCI Senate Pasay made sure she left no stone unturned in encouraging JCI Senators to join the inter-island trip via speed boat. And while the

uncooperative waves seemed to have shaken some JCI Senators, the entire day of January 30, 2020 proved to be worth the seemingly roller coaster ride on water as the beauty of Lamitan captivated many a JCI Senator where JCI Sen. Alex Estabillo made sure that all JCI Senators on the trip would not go home with an empty stomach as he prepared a feast fit for a king. JCI Senate Lamitan was, indeed, a most gracious host for an entire day of exploring the best of what Lamitan has to offer, an odyssey every JCI Senator would never forget.

JCI SENATE PHILIPPINES BRACES FOR MILESTONE VIRTUAL NATCON RAISE THE NATION RESPONSIVENESS

THOROUGHNESS

NOBILITY

The 2020 Virtual National Convention will be the first online convention in the history of JCI Senate Philippines.

T

he global pandemic has taken the world by storm. Suddenly, interpersonal interactions became a thing of the past as virtual presence became a need from a mere luxury. Face masks transcended the confines of the operating room and the hospital setting. Face shields consumed the acetates we erstwhile used from overhead presentations. The world turned 180 degrees and so too were the lives of people around the globe. No one anticipated its coming as medical frontliners and people alike began falling ill and death became an inevitable consequence. With no antidote in sight, the way to the new normal became the norm of society which JCI Senators began to embrace as

one of the harsh realities of modern living. Virtual platforms suddenly found relevance and utter significance and people became content with a virtual lifestyle where great poses in pictures became limited by match box size and virtual backgrounds became the latest technological craze to hit this side of the globe. As products of a premier leadership organization such as JCI Philippines and currently, enjoying the honor of senatorship under JCI Senate Philippines, the resolve of JCI Senators to conquer the odds became a much exciting journey. While the vast

majority of senators who make up JCI Senate Philippines were christened in an era where technology was an unknown term and where life was simple and fun was simply sharing a laugh or a chuckle with a fellow jaycee of another chapter, there are those from the generation X and the pre-millenial era whose exemplary ways at a tender age earned them a much coveted spot in the roll of JCI Senators. Their technological adeptness has inspired many a seasoned senator to rethink the wheel of everyday life and, true to form, 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad found a way to match his resolve for one year to lead in the jaycee tradition with the possibility of staging a virtual National Convention. Thus, in the colorful Second National Board Meeting of JCI Senate Philippines, after much debate and discussion on this hotly contested matter, the National Board voted to stage the very first JCI Senate Philippines Virtual National Convention. Bearing in mind the predicament of many seasoned senators of remaining at home to protect them from the perils of the deadly global pandemic, the idea of a virtual national convention, while alien to a vast majority, was embraced with open arms as the organization braces to overcome the obstacles brought by the debacle of the global pandemic whose end iseems not yet in sight. A National Convention Director has been chosen and the Third National Board Meeting this August 29, 2020 will be treated to its biggest reveal. Certainly, the light has reached the tunnel as we likewise anticipate a virtual voting of candidates for National Directors in the offing. Its impending success is definitely a sight to behold sans the large expenses and travel concomitant with an in person National Convention. The marriage of convenience at home and the feel of a futuristic convention is here as JCI Senators welcome the new normal with open arms.

T

hrough the exploratory efforts of 2020 National Chairman for The JCI Senator Newsletter JCI Sen. Aries Balanay and 2020 National Chairperson for International Relations JCI Sen. Cristina Caswell, JCI Senate Philippines was able to connect and foster cordial relations with JCI Senate Malaysia by corresponding with their friends of past during their prime in the jaycee movement. Upon exchange of emails, JCI Sen. Dani Wong, 2020 National President of JCI Senate Malaysia together with 2019 National President JCI Sen. Neelkrish Perumal and wife, JCI Sen. Nora Arin accepted the invitation of 2020 National President JCI Sen. Rene Natividad of JCI

Senate Philippines to attend the 2020 Joint Induction and Turnover Ceremonies of JCI Senate Philippines and the Philippine Jaycee Senate Foundation. After doing a courtesy call with the Zamboanga City Vice Mayor, radio guestings in the City of Flowers and attending the First National Board Meeting, JCI Sen. Dani Wong and JCI Sen. Rene Natividad inked a milestone twinning agreement during the induction ceremonies making both of national senate organizations sisters. This is another feather added to the cap of JCI Sen. Rene Natividad as he leads the national senate organization this 2020.
