General Manager Freedom Isn’t Always Comfortable — And That’s the Point Every Fourth of July, we celebrate fireworks, family cookouts and the birth of our nation. We proudly fly the American flag, gather with neighbors and remember the courage of those who fought for our independence.

But Independence Day is about far more than a piece of parchment signed in 1776. It is about the freedoms that the Declaration of Independence ultimately made possible. Freedom is something many around the world still long to experience.

Among those, none is more vital than the freedom to speak your mind.

The First Amendment doesn’t exist to protect popular opinions. It exists to protect unpopular ones. It protects criticism of those in power, uncomfortable conversations, satire, investigative journalism, peaceful protest and the open exchange of ideas. It gives every American the right to disagree without fear of government censorship.

That freedom isn’t always neat. It isn’t always polite. It can be loud, messy and even offensive. Yet history has repeatedly shown that progress often begins with someone willing to say what others don’t want to hear.

As the general manager of “Folio Weekly,” I never take that responsibility lightly. Since 1987, “Folio” has served Northeast Florida as an independent voice, providing a platform for diverse perspectives, challenging conversations and community storytelling. Free speech isn’t simply something we write about; it’s the foundation upon which publications like ours exist.

The beauty of America has never been that we all think alike. It’s that we’re free not to.

So, as you celebrate this Independence Day, enjoy the fireworks and the traditions. But also remember the invisible freedoms that make those celebrations possible. They deserve our gratitude just as much as the stars and stripes flying overhead.

High History: Cannabis and the Fourth of July

Long before fireworks, backyard barbecues and beach parties became Independence Day traditions, cannabis was already part of the American story.

Not marijuana as we know it today, but hemp — a variety of cannabis grown throughout Colonial America. Hemp was one of the most valuable crops of the 18th century, used to make rope, sails, clothing, paper and countless products essential to daily life.

Several founding fathers, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, cultivated hemp on their farms. During the Revolutionary War era, hemp was considered so important that many colonies encouraged its production to support commerce and maritime industries.

One of the most persistent myths in cannabis history is that the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

While hemp paper existed at the time, historians generally agree the final Declaration was written on parchment made from animal skin.

Still, cannabis has a deeper connection to America’s founding than many realize. When the colonies declared independence from Britain in 1776, hemp was already woven into the fabric of everyday life across the young nation.

Nearly 250 years later, cannabis remains part of the American conversation—though now the debate centers on legalization rather than agriculture.

So while marijuana may not have inspired the Declaration of Independence, cannabis was unquestionably present during the birth of the United States.

In a way, America’s oldest cannabis story begins before America itself.

You Should Smile More: Miss Florida USA Words by Chandler Thompson

Miss Florida USA is gearing up for its annual pageant, in which the winner will progress to Miss USA and finally to Miss Universe. In the age of women’s empowerment, a competition that judges women on looks and pleasantries does make me scratch my head.

Beauty pageants keep us stuck in the mindset that we, as women, should view each other as competition, while encouraging us to value the vain idea that the way we look and the amount we smile is crown-worthy.

Miss Florida USA will be held on July 10-12 at the Linda W. Chapin Theater in Orlando with contestants being judged on physical fitness, evening gown and interview.

The three main categories alone are enough to make me more than confused. Physical fitness rates the way her body looks in a swimsuit, leaving no room for unique body shapes or genetics. The idea of only being able to win if your body looks a certain way perpetuates the toxic ideology that American society has already ingrained in young girls.

The focus on a woman’s thinness has already been proven to lead to mental health issues as well as disordered eating, according to a study on the National Library of Medicine’s website. Ironically, there is often a question in the interview portion of the pageant that asks the contestant her thoughts on mental health in some capacity. But how can you ask a woman about the importance of mental health while, in the same breath, making the way her body looks its own portion of the competition?

The next segment of the competition is evening gown. In this category, the contestant is judged for her style, stage presence and confidence. While I do believe confidence is an important value to teach young women, the way a gown looks on someone, as well as its style, is completely subjective. Of course, subjectivity is the point of this kind of competition, which is why this portion of the pageant is the least concerning for me.

I do think there is room for competition in style that isn’t rooted in harmful messages.

The final portion of the competition is the interview. This category is the most covert poison of the whole pageant. The “women are wonderful effect” is a psychological phenomenon in which women are automatically perceived to have more positive attributes than men. While this sounds like it would be beneficial, it’s quite the opposite. This idea leaves no room for human emotions for women and maintains that women should always be pleasant. The interview guises itself as being about the contestant’s ability to think under pressure because the questions aren’t known before the pageant. While I think this idea can be useful, many of the questions are questions that the pageant itself negates. Questions about mental health are hypocritical considering the effect these types of pageants have on a girl’s mentality. Questions that ask contestants why they should win rather than the others promote women to see each other as competition and

cause a divide. There are even questions that ask the contestants to debate such as, “What would you say to someone who says pageantry degrades women?” which is asking the very prey of the pageant industry to defend their old-fashioned ways for them.

The Miss Florida USA website explains this pageant could be the start of a career in beauty, modeling, public relations, marketing and more. Suggesting that pageants are a way to look good to employers does not make me feel any different about the industry. In the same way, the defense that pageants call attention to social advocacy does not make me feel any better about what beauty pageants stand for. The name “beauty pageant” itself suggests what these competitions are truly about. These defenses of the pageants feel like a last-ditch effort to stay politically correct in an ever-progressing society. It’s not beneficial to pit women against each other, and a woman’s societal status doesn’t determine if she’s deserving of an education/career anymore.

When people think of vacation destinations, places like the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, Nashville or even the Italian coast often come to mind. But what if you didn’t have to book a flight, pack a suitcase or spend thousands of dollars to capture that same feeling?

Visitors often compare the scenery to remote Caribbean islands due to its pristine nature and lack of commercial development. Spend the day kayaking through salt marshes, biking scenic trails or simply relaxing on the beach while watching dolphins swim offshore.

Jacksonville is often overlooked as a tourist destination by locals who see it every day.

Yet hidden throughout the city’s 875 square miles are destinations that can transport visitors to tropical islands, European-inspired retreats and laid-back beach towns. Jaguars Summer Update

The Jaguars’ rookie class also generated excitement. Young players at multiple positions received increased opportunities during offseason practices, including wide receiver Josh Cameron and running back Bhayshul Tuten, whose speed and athleticism were frequently on display. Defensive back Jabbar Muhammad also showed promise, making several notable plays during practice sessions.

One of the most closely watched players remains, Travis Hunter. The Jaguars continue exploring ways to utilize Hunter’s unique skill set in multiple roles, giving him opportunities to contribute in different areas of the game as the coaching staff evaluates potential packages for the upcoming season.

Several players emerged as early standouts during organized team activities and minicamp workouts. Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. drew positive reviews for his development and consistency with coaches noting improvements in his leadership and communication on and off the field.

Boating Etiquette Words by Emily Cannon

As a self-proclaimed “River Rat,” who grew up spending just about every weekend on the St. Johns River or cruising the Intracoastal, I’ve learned a thing or two about proper boating etiquette. Whether you’ve been invited out for a boat day or are the owner of your own vessel, there are a few unwritten rules everyone should know before stepping aboard.

First things first: SHOES. TAKE. THEM. OFF. There’s nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, worse than someone’s dirty shoes tracking mud, sand and who knows what else all over the boat before you’ve even left the marina. Nobody wants to spend their afternoon scrubbing footprints off the deck. Just kick them off before getting on board and save everyone the headache.

Next up: sunscreen and tanning oil. I know everyone wants that perfect golden glow, but please apply it before you get on the boat. And if you’re bringing spray sunscreen, use it carefully. One quick overspray and you’ve essentially turned the deck into an 20 Folio Weekly

ice skating rink. Nobody wants to spend the day reenacting a slipand-fall commercial.

Now let’s talk snacks. Boat snacks are one of life’s greatest pleasures but keep them simple. Chips, sandwiches, fruit, maybe some cookies. Notice a theme here? Low mess. Nobody wants melted chocolate smeared across the seats or a bowl of chili tipping over during a wake. If it requires multiple utensils and a cleanup crew, it probably doesn’t belong on a boat.

Speaking of wakes, if you’re driving, remember that not every section of water is your personal NASCAR track. Slow down in no-wake zones. They’re not suggestions. They’re there for a reason. The people fishing, docked at restaurants or trying to enjoy a peaceful afternoon would appreciate not having their boat launched into orbit by your giant wake.

And while we’re on the subject, if another boat gives you a friendly wave, wave back. It’s practically boating law. You don’t have to know them. You probably never will.

But for some reason, boaters acknowledge each other like long-lost cousins at a family reunion.

If someone invites you on their boat, don’t show up empty-handed. Bring some snacks, drinks, ice, fuel money or, at the very least, a good attitude. Boats are expensive.

Gas is expensive. Everything associated with boats is expensive. Contributing something goes a long way.

Another important rule: if you’re not driving the boat, don’t suddenly decide you’re a captain. Nothing irritates a boat owner faster than hearing, “You should go over there,” every five minutes from someone who couldn’t tell port from starboard. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Now let’s get into the serious stuff. Every boat should have enough life jackets for everyone on board, along with a radio, fire extinguisher, navigation lights and other required safety equipment. You never know when the weather can change or something unexpected can happen. Safety always comes first, even on the best boat days.

And finally, when the fun is over, remember one simple rule: whatever you brought on the boat should leave with you. Empty cans, snack wrappers, towels, floaties, take it all. The boat owner shouldn’t have to clean up after everyone.

Oh, and one last thing for the boat ramp crowd. If there are multiple boats trying to leave at the end of the day, don’t become that person. You know the one. The person who races to be first, blocks everyone else, forgets how to back up a trailer and creates a 30-minute traffic jam. Be patient, wait your turn, and remember that everyone is trying to get home after a long day in the sun.

Follow these simple rules, and you’ll be invited back for future boat days. Ignore them, and you might find yourself watching everyone else cruise off from the dock while you’re left standing on shore wondering what happened.

And a fun little reminder from the best fisherman who ever lived, my “gramps,” there’s no talking while fishing.

As he used to say, “The fish can hear you”. Even if it’s just to get your granddaughter to chill for five minutes.

Reality TV and Sports Watch Parties:

The New Frontier for Communal Viewing

Going to the movie theater used to be an event: “Star Wars” releases with Darth Vader-filled ticket lines or pink-out “Barbie” fans. This goes back to the beginning of the movie industry, during the silent era, when films were scored in real time with an orchestra, filling the theater with a palpable, human energy.

This urge to gather and experience the full immersion of a film transformed along with the industry. Sound and color in film created a new level of viewing experience. New worlds were introduced, and with them came the fans. The movie-going culture of the late 20th century highlighted community building through massive cultural moments where theaters were packed, and lobbies were designated for debriefs. But, as the screens got smaller, the communal experience of films dwindled, and so did the energy of the theater.

Then came the pandemic, when everyone became accustomed to watching films in isolation on television or a computer. This, paired with a decline in theater etiquette, has drained the movies of their magic, especially in a group setting. Maybe, if people stopped handing their toddlers iPads in the theater or telling their friend about their horrific Tinder date during the apex of the movie, there would be more of a sense of wonder during a film screening. This issue, at its root cause, has more to do with attention spans than rude behavior.

(Though it is still rude. Please stop.) Hence, the new version of communal viewing: the watch party.

Though the past few years have seen a rise in movie theater cultural experiences with the releases of “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” and the many, many Marvel films, the kids still yearn for what once was. To fill this void, restaurants, bars and other venues started hosting watch parties. While watch parties act as a theater, many find them a better option because talking is encouraged and drinks are plentiful.

I first noticed this last summer with the release of “Love Island” season seven. All over Jacksonville, people were showing up to watch parties to gather and gossip about the people embarrassing themselves in the name of love. Fast forward to 2026, and the same thing is happening with “Love Island” season eight and World Cup watch parties with venues, especially sports bars, thriving in the meantime.

As a person who is not too into sports, I never really saw the appeal of a sports bar. It seemed loud and obnoxious and reeked of beer; a combination only a sports fan could love. Then, a few weeks ago, I found myself at a bar as the San Antonio Spurs blew a 29-point lead against the New York Knicks, and it clicked.

The energy of a crowd, all experiencing something for the first time, being a part of history as a viewer, is exactly what used to make theaters so special. It’s strangers crossing paths for a single moment by sharing a space.

Communal viewing, whether it be for movies, TV shows or sporting events, reminds us that we no longer have to be isolated. Life gets so much larger and brighter when surrounded by like-minded people. As the film industry continues to catch up and release better films, reality TV and sports watch parties will continue to keep humanity alive, uniting people with dating conspiracies and competition.

Review of ‘Disclosure Day’ Words by Harry Straussman

Steven Spielberg returns to conjuring spectacle after several years of exploring a more intimate vein of storytelling with what promises to be his final opus on his long-time extra-terrestrial obsession.

“Disclosure Day” sees a pair of strangers on the run together after uncovering highly sensitive government secrets on alien life that would threaten to upend humanity if exposed. “Disclosure Day” often feels like a film made out of another time, in a mostly complimentary way, as the film’s famous director plays the hits. Expecting the octogenarian Spielberg to reinvent the wheel again at this age would be a fool’s errand, but he imbues the film with a propulsive energy that is befitting its cat-and-mouse trappings, while also shooting each scene with some of the most impressive, yet unshowy, camerawork.

If there is one trait that sets Spielberg apart from some of the other luminaries of cinema, it is his ability to visually unfold a scene without drawing attention away from the story toward the technique. As arguably the greatest blocker in film history, Spielberg’s control of the frame is second to none and is on full display during the film’s set pieces, which are often inventive and always executed with deft expertise. A memorable scene involving a trapped car and a rapidly approaching train is the kind of sequence that has been done to death in an incalculable number of blockbusters to varying results, but in Spielberg’s hands, it is a triumphant piece of action cinema with each moment of tension impeccably built and then released at just the right moment. Like a catchy pop song that doesn’t break new ground but would never get skipped over.

“Disclosure Day” is told across an eclectic but capable ensemble cast, led by the rising Josh O’Connor, who caps off a run of rapturously received performances with what is undoubtedly his biggest film role yet, and Emily Blunt, who gives the finest performance from a career that has already received an abundance of acclaim. Blunt is amongst the most range-filled leading ladies working in Hollywood today, and still, she was able to surprise here as a Kansas City meteorologist who is suddenly afflicted with a gift and knowledge that is not of this world. Blunt often dazzles, but she doesn’t leave the ensemble behind, as Colemon Domingo adds another effortlessly warm and magnetic performance to his resume, while Colin Firth subverts himself by slipping into a villainous CEO who flirts between being detestable and sympathetic. The effectiveness of “Disclosure Day” will hinge on its certain to be, divisive finale, which is made of pure, unfiltered Spielbergian wonder and sentimentality, that can only be compared to Sam Neil laying eyes on the herd of brachiosaurs but on steroids.

While the film may not reach the heights of some of his best work, in large part due to David Koepp’s screenplay which can’t quite tie together the film’s many disparate ideas, and it may not be as unique to his oeuvre as his other recent works, a second-tier Steven Spielberg film is still substantially more exciting and engaging than many other films to come out of the Hollywood assembly line. “Disclosure Day” is a distinct and decisively optimistic blockbuster that is a worthy addition to the body of work of one of the medium’s maestros.

Should Jacksonville Artists Still Believe in the ‘American Idol’ Dream?

Words by Ariana Alcantara Success in the music industry has a different definition for every artist. For some, this means touring the world, but for others, it is having the freedom to quit that 9-5 to focus on music full-time. No matter the definition, the path to living out the dream of becoming a musician looks different for everyone. When “American Idol” premiered in 2002, the goal was to streamline the most common path of becoming a recording artist: discovery, development, signing, star. Now with the rise of technology, the lines are more blurred than ever with an influx of platforms to grow an audience.

Aubreigh Wyatt, who passed away from suicide at 13 years old. Her audition with the original song “Forever 13” earned her a golden ticket, advancing her to the next round. Following the audition, Grace did not make it far in the competition, but she continues to nurture her career online. Her TikTok has garnered almost four million likes for her singing videos, and she continues to perform live. Grace’s passion for music and songwriting exceeds any competition, and as more people discover her online, she continues to forge her own path.

Over the years, Jacksonville natives have auditioned for reality TV singing shows with the dream of making it into a career. It goes without saying there is massive talent in Jacksonville, so why has only one of these singers (Phil Stacey, who got to the Top 6) made it to the global radar from the “American Idol” path? In the modern age, are Jacksonville artists, or any artists for that matter, better off foregoing the seemingly surefire way of becoming a singer? If “American Idol” is not working for our local artists, then what is?

The premise of “American Idol” was to give unknown voices the opportunity to be signed to a record deal by developing and putting them on a track to success. This traditional method, sound for the time, has grown outdated as musicians take control of their own paths to success. Jacksonville artists are on the front lines proving that the gatekeepers of the past can no longer dictate who gets a seat in the music big leagues. The internet has completely shifted the power structure from the record labels to the musicians, or more specifically, the listeners. Audiences now create organic growth from musicians.

Let us be honest, can you name a singer to come out of “American Idol” besides Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood or Jennifer Hudson?

Even though these big names appeared on the show, the talent of the other contestants cannot be ignored. This particular route just did not work for them. In the modern age, it will not work for most, so what does? Below are Jacksonville natives proving there is life beyond the golden ticket, and for most, it exists online or at our local venues.

Years ago, Jacksonville resident Dillon Basse auditioned for “American Idol” and was rejected. In 2026, his band, Flipturn, boasts millions of monthly listeners and multiple sold-out tour dates. For Basse, the “American Idol” structure failed to see the potential that has now proven itself through his hard work and raw talent. Basse has a unique sound that perfectly pairs with the deeply emotional and colorful lyrics that have supported the growth of his band, but the judges could not see that. Thankfully, the internet could. Basse did not stop after this rejection. Instead, he and his band grew an organic fanbase from live shows and dedication, investing in platforms where listeners could discover Basse’s soulful voice.

Of course, “American Idol” is not completely useless. The reality television show still highlights undiscovered artists that some would otherwise not know, but it is no longer the only means of discovery. The highly produced show cannot compare to the authenticity of artists taking control of their own musicianship. A singing competition is good for just that, singing, but when it comes to emotion, artistry and connection, there are many artists like Dillon Basse and Khloe Grace who are proving that the internet may just be the new stage.

This past season, a Jacksonville teen named Khloe Grace auditioned in Nashville, giving a deeply emotional performance of her own song, which went viral on TikTok. Grace wrote a song for a stranger named 29

Bold Matsuri

Ever since the moment I found out anime existed, I knew it was special and that I always wanted to have it in my life. I fell in love with the imaginative and awe-inspiring worlds and stories from a distant land. So when I heard there was an anime convention coming up in Jacksonville, I was very excited to attend.

With this background, one might expect I’ve attended many anime conventions, but I’ve honestly only been to one: Anime Central in Chicago. Having attended one of the biggest conventions in the States, my standards were set very high as I walked into Jacksonville’s Bold Matsuri Anime Convention. For many, myself included, anime and Japanese culture have been an escape from our often stressful dayto-day lives, which is why anime conventions like Bold Matsuri are cherished as a place of comfort through the characters participants love.

The most impressive one actually rolled up to the convention: a giant boat with a baby in the captain’s seat.. Following closely behind was a boat/stroller hybrid inspired by the pirate anime One Piece. It was truly one of the most impressive and cutest cosplays I’ve ever seen!

While I do love a well-done costume, my true love lies in the arts, and the robust artists’ alley was my main destination. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of local talent. Many were selling art prints, key chains, buttons and more, and it was so hard to decide just what to get.

Joined by “Folio” photographer Michael Teal, I trekked through the crowds of cosplayers and anime enthusiasts. It was really magical to see our city come together for a passion so many of us enjoy in a shared space of admiration and creativity. Some of the effort put into people’s cosplays took my breath away.

One artist named Angela caught my eye as I walked through the maze of elaborate displays. While all the vendors clearly had dedicated significant time to their craft, her art spoke to me immediately. The Savannah College of Art and Design grad told me she had been drawing all of her life and has made it her full-time career.

Having researched how to sell my own art, I commend Angela and all the other artists at the convention for their resilience and persistence to make their dreams a reality. Drawing can take a long time to master, and many of the vendors had upwards of 20 prints for sale. In Angela’s case, each drawing took from 3-8 hours to complete.

With new anime coming out all the time, keeping up with trends is a hefty task. I respect all these artists for their undertaking.

Overall, I would say Bold Matsuri raised the bar and earned its place as an engaging and exciting anime convention. People genuinely looked joyous as they admired the cosplayers and vendors while dressed in their own cute, cool and beautiful cosplays.

Renfro graduated from Flagler College with a degree in graphic design and has since become a professional graphic designer and began building her company in 2020 during the pandemic.

In a world of fast fashion and microtrends, Morgan Renfro has taken the challenge of combating these issues with her own clothing company. Known as Sun Groove, the company is run solely by Renfro, who makes every piece of clothing by hand.

Her goal for Sun Groove is to “bring community together, spread awareness for ocean conservation, and work to combat fast fashion by handmaking clothes in lower quantities.”

She’s always had a deep love for art and creativity, and during the pandemic lockdown, she realized she needed a creative outlet that didn’t require outside contact. She dabbled in screen printing in high school and already had the supplies, so she began experimenting with her own designs. What started as a fun project to share with family and friends soon turned into a real business that has grown exponentially over the past few years.

Sun Groove was created to be an impactful brand, and thanks to Renfro’s hard work and passion, it has become just that. She always knew she wanted the company to contribute to a local cause, and what better cause than ocean conservation in a beach town?

Through her knowledge of the local organization, the Surfrider Foundation, she was able to connect Sun Groove with the organization. The Surfrider Foundation is a national organization focused on ocean conservation and mobilizing communities to take action for their local environment. Renfro fell in love with the foundation and decided to donate a sizable portion of Sun Groove’s income to the Surfrider Foundation.

Another amazing part of Sun Groove’s mission is its dedication to creating sustainable clothing. As a fashion lover, Renfro wanted her brand to fight against the growing trend of fast fashion currently plaguing the clothing industry. She handmakes each item she sells, which is a time-consuming process. Screen printing alone, for example, takes up to three days for each item. Also, she intentionally makes small batches of clothing for each drop to avoid clothing waste and proudly uses 100% cotton. Renfro puts time and intention into all of her work, ensuring each piece is of the utmost quality.

After the pandemic, she began selling in local markets while also creating her own website. Her love for meeting people was fulfilled by this new selling outlet, and she began gaining a customer base from her interactions in person and online.

“I enjoy the markets because I really get to know my customers, and I love meeting other small businesses and being able to support them,” Renfro said.

Although Morgan puts her all into Sun Groove, she still faces many challenges as a young small business owner. Since she is the company’s only employee, Renfro has to juggle every aspect of the company on her own.

While working at a pop-up event in Daytona, she connected with a young student who bought three clothing items from Sun Groove.

He was very excited about her screen-printing process and Sun Groove’s mission. A few months later, when Morgan worked the same market, she ran into the student again, who was surprisingly wearing the pieces of clothing he had previously bought from her.

“Running social media, keeping up with trends, plus a full-time job is very hard,” Morgan said.

What makes Sun Groove stand out is that it is truly a passion project. Morgan revealed she makes no profit from her sales, and all proceeds go toward her donations to the Surfrider Foundation and purchasing more supplies. Her dedication shows how strong her passion is for the causes she supports and how much that passion reflects in Sun Groove.

To Renfro, having the opportunity to meet customers who support her brand and like-minded people makes her hard work pay off.

While she loves all of her supporters, one in particular stands out to her.

“It’s really exciting to see someone actually enjoy the things that you make with your hands,” Renfro said.

Over the years, the brand has grown and changed a lot. Her brand has become more sophisticated, and she has been able to dedicate more time to perfecting her designs. She knows the ropes of running a small business and has learned what it takes to be successful.

“I love having a business that I love and have full creative direction over,” Renfro said. “Not many people have the opportunity to do that. I’m really happy that I can make the time to do that with everything else that I do.”

We Went Down the Jacksonville Facebook Marketplace Rabbit Hole So You Don’t Have to Words by Abigail Bodenham

Facebook Marketplace has become the modern-day garage sale, except instead of your neighbor trying to offload an old lawnmower, you’re faced with a life-sized Annabelle doll, fishshaped slippers and an antique bootjack called “Naughtie Nellie.”

With thousands of listings across Jacksonville and the surrounding areas, it’s a fascinating glimpse into what people own, collect and, apparently, decide they no longer need.

Some items are genuinely useful, others are oddly specific, and a few leave you wondering what series of life events led to them ending up online.

In the name of journalism (and definitely not procrastination), we spent far too long scrolling through Marketplace to see what treasures we could uncover. The result? A collection that’s equal parts bizarre, hilarious and unmistakably Florida.

The Ticketmaster War Words by Amia King

Something in the air is causing an incredible number of artists to go on tour this year, and as a result, we are witnessing entire fanbases fighting over nosebleed tickets even at the smallest venues.

In the waiting room, you may also get a message saying, “ u p d a t e : t i c ke t s are limited” or get kicked out of the line as a result of the website crashing from all of the traffic.

It is a war between Ticketmaster vs. customer and customer vs. customer.

Ticketmaster is the largest ticket-selling platform globally. Not to mention, it is owned by the largest hub for entertainment promotions, Live Nation. Ticketmaster has distributed tickets in over 30 countries with more than 500 million tickets sold annually. However, the company has recently caught itself in a legal scandal this past April. Ticketmaster and Live Nation have been found guilty of overcharging fans and adding unnecessary and/or hidden fees. Some artists have attempted to make the situation right by refunding customers for their upcharges on the original ticket sales. To make matters worse, Ticketmaster allows the ridiculous prices of resale tickets on its platform as a way to secure additional profits. Insane resale ticket prices are causing consumers to use competitor selling platforms for a moderate price, even if they are skeptical of their legitimacy.

The process of getting your hands on a singular ticket has become unnecessarily difficult. Artists announce tours with presales for a variety of people, including fan club members and certain credit card holders. By the time sales are open to the general public, the best seats are gone, or the event could be close to sold out. When it’s time to purchase tickets, fans enter a waiting room up to 15 minutes early.

And this is a defining moment of the Ticketmaster war. Based on the millisecond you can enter the queue, your place in line is assigned, and, realistically, you could wait over an hour only to be denied tickets. If you are lucky enough to make it to the purchase screen to finally pick your seats, you may receive a message that those seats are no longer available. Even with following the correct procedures, you are still denied the option to purchase a ticket.

Or imagine the feeling of having presale access and speeding through the queue just to find out there are no tickets available.

Your last hope is the general sale only to find out the remaining tickets are only available from resellers — with those tickets likely three times the original price. Or more. You have officially lost the Ticketmaster war, but there are still opportunities to snag those tickets.

Alternative ticket vendors like SeatGeek and StubHub offer tickets to most of the same shows as Ticketmaster and don’t involve presales or cues. But be aware, prices are usually just as high or even higher.

Fans can also go to the venue box office on the day of the event to see if any tickets are still available. For ticket holders, there’s also a slight chance of scoring an upgrade.

And to the concert fans who are constantly losing the Ticketmaster war, you are seen and heard.

Speaking of nepo babies, American singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams happens to be the daughter of Hollywood heavyweight J.J. Abrams, the mastermind behind “Lost,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Star Trek.” While her pedigree doesn’t inherently impact her talent, it’s certainly worth a mention as she gears up to release her third studio album.

Given her famous father, the title “Daughter from Hell” feels just a little on the nose.

The dance floor is dead, so now we are making rock music. Charli XCX’s famous last words.

STEVE LACY “Oh Yeah?”

It has been four long years since we last got an album from Steve Lacy. While “C U Girl” and “Bad Habit” might be the only tracks of his currently on my playlist, this American singer-songwriter has more than enough talent to warrant keeping an eye on his next move.

ARIANA GRANDE “Petal” What to say about Ariana Grande that hasn’t already been said? She has the vocals, the hooks and a major award-winning musical under her belt. I gave her latest single, “Hate That I Made You Love Me” a listen, and the irony isn’t lost on me: I absolutely hate to admit how good it is.

Enjoying the Ride With

Words by Amia King Los Muertos is a Latin surf-rock band that has only played in Northeast Florida for a year. But within that year, they’ve performed at the Back Bar, Joe’s Garage, the Dragonfly Lounge and Hardwicks Bar, as well as Porchfest and Finfest. Their priority as a collective is to have a good time and make sure everyone in the room is right there with them. I knew this when they set up at the Dragonfly Lounge and jammed out for hours before the nightlife truly began.

Their first single, “Walton Goggins,” was released in April of this year, and they plan to release two more singles and an album soon.

For Los Muertos, the bigger the sound, the better. The effortless and casual band consists of Luis Silva, Carlos Reis, Andrew Heinzman, John Jones, Gena Fitzpatrick, Jacob Workman, Tianna Disalvo, Jordan Smith and Jack Humphrey. It truly is a rare occurrence to witness all members in the same place at the same time, but mostly, you will catch four to seven members rocking out together. The group has continued to grow through adding backup singers, a keyboard player and percussionists. And this insane group is hoping to grow even bigger with their members and sound.

“There’s something special about how you can gather eight or nine people on a stage and all play together … it feels like you’re a part of something bigger. It’s special.” said Jones, the band’s drummer.

Connecting With Latin Roots Silva, lead vocalist, and Reis, classical guitarist, dive into the importance of keeping an authentic Latin sound. The two members are well-versed in bringing their culture to life through music.

“Authentic Latin music is made to be played with big bands…you have five different people doing the drum kit. You think, ‘How can this instrument sound good?’ until it gels with the rest of the collective,” Silva said.

Reis added, “Bringing in that many people only works because the music suits it. Brazilian music is meant to be a parade; it’s written for hundreds of people, and thousands of people play together. It is fun for us, but it is also to make something different … We started thinking ‘What makes us more us? ‘Our roots. We do not want people to have the same experience as they would with any other band.”

Inside the Jacksonville Music Scene Silva shared that back home in Ecuador, there is a shortage of musicians who take the leap to creating their own sound. “Despite what anyone thinks about Jacksonville, people support you making original music.”

The support of the Jacksonville music scene is severely underestimated with many venues looking to promote original music. In Rio, Reis said, it’s difficult to have a space to showcase your own music.

“Jacksonville is a great place to practice and try out your sound, see what works, without having the expectation of being perfect,” he explained.

The Jacksonville music scene truly is a place for bands to get their original sound heard. Local bands are constantly experimenting and intertwining. Case in point: Heinzman, the recording engineer and stand-in for the head percussionist, bassist and guitarist, is not only a member of Los Muertos but also Grey Dancer and Hogbean. Jones and Smith, singer and guitarist, are two-thirds of the band Liza Attic.

Fitzpatrick, the percussionist, is also the drummer for Stella Soul.

Personality Profile In their free time, you may see Jones and Reis on an early morning surf, Silva cooking for 10 hours straight and Heinzman reading a long book. Musically speaking, the group has a unanimous appreciation for Bob Dylan, but each member has other favorite artists, ranging from Prince and Grateful Dead to Joao Gilberto and Hector Napolitano.

These “comedians” also know how to masterfully bring humor into any conversation. I attempted to convince them to do stand up, but their answer to that is yet to be determined. While discussing the topic of favorite artists, we ended in a serious debate: Beyonce’s lyrics about Jay Z. Heinzman, for example, strongly dislikes listening to any Beyonce song with a mention of Jay Z and fully supports Solange’s actions. It was at this point in the interview that Heinzman also revealed his true Gen Z nature, claiming he only wants to “eat avocado toast and hot chips, charge his phone and watch reels.”

I hope to see Los Muertos continue to spread Latin culture and community through their music and food in the Jacksonville area and possibly on tour.

Recording Culture Is

Making People Boring Words & photos by Chandler Thompson There have been many occasions when I’ve been scrolling on social media and come across a video someone has taken of a stranger doing something in public that has triggered virality for one reason or another. Maybe the person was doing something strange or rude or incorrectly. I’ve even been guilty of laughing at some of these videos, as I’m sure many have. However, the epidemic of video recording strangers in public brings up a new discussion about shame culture and what it’s doing to our individuality.

Audio recording a private conversation is a third-degree felony in the state of Florida if both parties don’t consent to the recording, according to the Recording Law website.

However, video recordings without audio in a public space are a legal loophole. If you are walking down a public street, you are subject to being video recorded for any reason. In the age of social media and meta glasses (inconspicuous-looking glasses with a camera built in), many take advantage of this workaround.

The owners of the active wear brand Suave have gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

Co-owner and wife of the founder, Chloe Wright, posted a video of a man at the gym using the rowing machine in a different way than its intended use. Wright is heard laughing in the video, as well as tagging a friend, saying he’s been using the machine wrong.

Backlash erupted, claiming mean girl behavior that is concerning, especially considering her ties to the athletic brand.

Commenters bring up a valid point to the harm Wright’s actions could cause. We are supposed to be encouraging people to go to the gym for their well-being, but if individuals are being recorded and shamed for doing things incorrectly, many will be deterred from even stepping foot in an exercise space.

Several videos have gone viral of people dancing in a club/bar or doing trends with strangers in the background. There are even club/bars that livestream the crowd of people trying to dance and have a fun time. If the video ends up on a specific algorithm, the comments are often a collection of people claiming expert knowledge in dancing. These comments will tell the partiers everything they’re doing wrong, how embarrassing they are and that they should go home. There are also skits on social media that act out the dance moves that are “embarrassing” or “ick.” There is no room for casual dancing for fun in the eyes of social media; you must do something well or not at all. The subjects of the videos, of course, never asked for the public’s opinion in the first place, and many times are unaware they were being recorded at all. The result? Sparse dance floors and plentiful wallflowers.

Another huge subject in the realm of videoing strangers is the coveted “social experiment.” A social experiment can look like many things on social media. These experiments typically have an aspect of trying to “test” strangers to see if they’re good or bad people based on how they react to a fake scenario that they often don’t realize is fake.

There are tests of people being flirted with, and if they don’t react politely enough, they are scrutinized in the comments. There are other more extreme experiments that depict a woman experiencing domestic violence, and if the people around her don’t come to her aid, they are horrible human beings who obviously support violence against women. Running errands is no longer a boring and mundane chore to get through. Forget if you’ve had a rough week or have a disability or any other reason that may lead a person to act “abnormally” in these nonconsensual tests.

You are on display wherever you go and must act correctly to appease the court of public opinion.

On the opposite end but in the same ballpark of recording culture are the people who record themselves “doing good deeds” to make themselves look better than others. Giving money, food and clothes to those less fortunate is generally considered a selfless act that adds to your morality points. Does that same sentiment hold true when you record yourself doing it to gain attention on social media for your good deeds?

The trend of recording strangers is not limited to making fun of them or testing their ethics. Many influencers go to areas where the unhoused congregate and record themselves giving money and other things while the comments shower them with praise for their good deeds. My initial thought on these videos is that they might be weird, but maybe they will inspire others to do the same. Then you get behind the truth of many of these “charitable” videos. Last year, an influencer who goes by “Crownstar” posted a video of him filling a cart with children’s clothes, claiming he’s going to donate them. Later, an employee of the Walmart where he bought the clothes said “Crownstar” returned all the clothes rather than donating them.

When called out for this, the influencer said people were being rude in the comments, so because his good deeds weren’t being appreciated, he returned the clothes. It’s situations like this that make me realize the weird charity videos don’t inspire others to give to the less fortunate. They inspire others to pretend to give to the less fortunate for internet praise.

The comfortability of not only recording strangers but then posting them online encourages monotony. The internet’s shaming kink is weird and harmful to the beauty of uniqueness. Shaming others for being themselves while praising those who are curating their image specifically for the internet has resulted in masses of boring and fake being the most common personality traits. The trend of “look at all of the ways I’m better than other people,” while not giving any insight into who you actually are, does nothing but make us all the exact same. Dull, inauthentic and socially awkward due to people knowing who they are because they’ve been told what they enjoy is embarrassing.

The Off-Menu Manifesto Words by Carmen Macri There is an undeniable high that comes with feeling like you’re in on a secret — like Jacksonville has one massive, citywide inside joke and you’re actually privy to the punchline. It’s exactly why every time a new “secret menu” item bleeds onto social media, everybody and their mother runs to the drive-thru, completely indifferent to the collective sigh of the baristas and sub shop workers waiting for them at the window.

But behind the counter, these unlisted items are usually just a clever, low-stakes way for a kitchen to experiment, a calculated playground where chefs, baristas and mixologists can toss weird combinations against the wall to see what sticks without the corporate headache of printing a brand new menu. The fact that it makes loyal customers feel like a bunch of exclusive insiders is just a nice little marketing bonus.

So, without further ado, here is a list of Jacksonville’s best-kept secrets (according to Facebook, Yelp and Reddit threads).

Angie’s Sub Shop Naturally, a list like this has to start with Jacksonville’s ultimate beachside holy grail.

Granted, calling anything at Angie’s Subs a “secret” is a bit of a stretch — it’s borderline performative considering they literally have a designated sheet printed out for you to look at. But for the sake of the underground aesthetic, we will happily look past their marketing gimmick because boy, do we love Angie’s.

The Holly Dolly: Roast beef, ham, Peruvian sauce, and, you guessed it, the fixins!

They even have secret code words that include “Crunchies,” which are just BBQ Fritos, and “Knick Knack,” which is the “ho-made” coleslaw.

TacoLu Now, TacoLu doesn’t boast a public secret menu, but avid TacoLu enthusiasts, Facebook restaurant connoisseurs and Reddit users have figured out a few hacks, and I am here to share them with you!

Bangin “D Style”: The hack is simple — the kitchen melts a heavy layer of jack cheese inside a flour tortilla, presses it flat, and uses that as your taco shell. One Reddit user swears by ordering the Bangin’ Shrimp Taco D Style. Apparently, it is life-changing.

House Habanero Salsa: The standard menu has great salsas, but if you ask your server for their house habanero salsa, you’ll get an off-menu, very spicy option.

“Philly Style” Tacos: The kitchen swaps out or tops the standard ingredients with a heavy, savory blend of sautéed onions, mushrooms, peppers, queso and mustard.

Pinegrove Market & Deli Much like Angie’s, calling Pinegrove’s secret menu a “secret” is a massive stretch considering they have a literal tab on their website titled, well, “Secret Menu.” But hey, it’s not printed on the actual overhead board, so for the sake of the article, we will happily look past it.

“Roti-Taco”: This is less of an actual secret menu item and more of customers mixing items themselves, but I digress. Order the Roti Canai flatbread appetizer alongside an order of boneless Seoul Hot Chicken or Korean Twice-Fried Wings. Use the roti as a tortilla to wrap the hot, sticky chicken and drizzle the curry on top.
