ON“I EVOLUTION AND PATIENCE DON’T THINK MARRIAGE IS A CIVIL RIGHT.” — Barack Obama (October 2004)

IT MAY BE HARD TO REMEMBER, but that statement by then-candidate for the United States Senate Barack Obama represents the starting line of what has often been referred to as the President’s evolution on the subject of equal rights for all citizens.

Throughout the course of his Democratic primary campaign, general election campaign, and for the better half of his first term in the White House, Obama “wrestled” with his beliefs about same-sex marriage, while many progressive-minded Americans waited patiently. Of course, advocates from the LGBT community exercised their own agency during the president’s first term — encouraging the pontificator-in-chief at every opportunity to support their inalienable, constitutional right for equal protection under the law. But, in general, the president was allowed to privately agonize over the spiritual and political implications of supporting such rights.

Politicians looking for patience in 2015, however, are finding they’ll no longer be afforded such luxury.

Exhibit A, locally, is Mayor Alvin Brown.

Though Brown has been given some time to evolve on the issue — from toeing the Southern Baptist line to unwilling to take a stand — things are escalating fast around the mayor.

Brown proverbially (and notoriously) punted when asked to support the Human Rights Ordinance when it came before the City Council in the summer of 2012. Back then, Brown told the Times-Union he was studying the matter and hadn’t yet formed an opinion either way. After letting him study up for three years, local LGBT rights advocates have put the mayor to the test.

In late March, Brown and members of LGBT Leadership PAC — who’ve become increasingly critical of the mayor’s failure to lead on the HRO — engaged in a public shouting match at Hemming Park. A week later, the relationship between the PAC’s chairwoman, Carrington Mead, and the mayor’s office became so volatile that Mead was asked to step down. More and more, she was being seen as an obstacle to negotiations (that may or may not be taking place).

As the LGBT Leadership PAC and other gay rights activists continue to pressure the mayor locally, news from outside the River City has given Brown more study material.

Exhibit B is Indiana Governor Mike Pence, who signed a law that, basically, sanctions discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The blowback in Gov. Pence’s case was swift and significant. Denouncements of Indiana’s law came from every angle, including a still-ballooning list of businesses threatening to boycott the state.

And while the backlash in Indiana befuddled public opinion researchers, it should be an enlightening moment for politicians concerned with the urgency of evolving on the subject of equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans.

Using Indiana’s case as evidence, it should be clear to Mayor Brown that not supporting a comprehensive human rights ordinance sets the city of Jacksonville back several years (which, with the way things are progressing, may as well be the Dark Ages) and gives his campaign for re-election a hurdle it may not be able to clear.

Last week, a coalition called Florida Businesses for a Competitive Workforce —

members of which include eight Fortune 500 companies including CSX, Wells Fargo and Disney — sent a letter to Governor Rick Scott urging his support for the house bill (HB33, known as the “competitive workforce act”) which would extend the state’s anti-discrimination laws to prohibit discrimination against Floridians based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The letter cites a study that says discrimination costs the state $360 million a year and summarizes the issue, simply saying, “passing the competitive workforce act is good for business. It’s good for Florida. It’s the right thing to do.”

Mayor Brown’s forbearance period on the HRO is over.

Obama’s supporters afforded the president more time on gay marriage due to the fact that most seemed to suspect something former White House Communications Director David Axelrod confirmed in his 2014 memoir, Believer. When discussing his boss’s contention that he was evolving, Axelrod wrote frankly that the president was “Bullshitting,” and that Obama always supported gay marriage (a statement buoyed

It’s unclear how long the president’s supporters were willing to wait because, in 2012, Vice President Joe Biden forced the president’s hand by “getting ahead of the president” on Meet The Press. Just a few months prior to the elections, Obama’s support for marriage equality served to rally his base and set him apart from his conservative challenger.

An errant political move?

Mayor Brown’s most ardent critics say he is a politician first. As the mayor’s re-election campaign staff recalibrates, they’re likely mulling two options. One is to move to the right of Lenny Curry — a tough call, when his challenger has inked support from our far-right governor. The second option? Go left and take executive action on some kind of anti-discrimination move. The political play here is to side with progress.

A fiscally conservative Democrat who has continually touted his relationship with Gov. Rick Scott, while disavowing any notions of tax increases, will be challenged in the runoff to set himself apart from a Republican challenger.

As our esteemed columnist A.G. Gancarski recently told me, “If you’ve heard Mayor Brown speak for three minutes, you’ve heard his whole campaign.” At this point, Brown has little new campaign steam left. He’s tested his supporters’ patience and it’s unclear how long they’ll last.

It’s time for the mayor to make a play.

LOSING MY RELIGION If only BILL HAY had a time machine …

ill Hay isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. He’s a white conservative in his 50s, prone to contrarian views, with a talk show called “I’m Speaking Plainly with Bill Hay.” When everyone else at the local Tea Party flagship station WBOB got blurry for Curry, Hay went with Bishop — who calls the radio personality a “straight shooter.” And sometimes that’s true.

Other times, it’s off the mark.

When I read Bill Hay’s attempt at “Speaking Plainly” about One Spark via Facebook, I cringed. I knew what was coming when it started with “Last night I must have traveled to the Twilight Zone ... I went downtown to One Spark and carried with me an open mind.”

Hay liked the music and the large crowd.

However, there was something he didn’t like.

Hay wrote, plainly: “When I was in my 20s, Jacksonville was a family town with good family values and the family influence was obvious. Now, when looking at a cross section of the attendees at One Spark, I see a completely different set of young people in attendance.”

Well, yes. Hay was in his 20s during the Godbold administration. Jacksonville had 400,000 people and the air smelled like a pulp mill. And you could smoke in Famous Amos.

Things done changed. Now, Hay tells us, we have lesbians in Jacksonville.

“I see women ‘loving’ on women,” he wrote, “and an overall sense of rebelling against the established ‘Family and Wholesome Ideal’.”

When was this “established”? Half the kids I knew growing up saw their dads once a month and always had new uncles.

Hay’s plain speak continued: “I have never seen a larger gathering of beautiful young women who have, IMHO, ruined their bodies with full sleeve tattoos.

What happened to a small heart or butterfly on the ankle ... I saw one young lady that was no more than 25 with what appeared to be a copy of the Mona Lisa on her entire back ... and of course her backless shirt had to display that she was wearing a bra, because the big white strap went right thru the Mona’s cheekbones.”

Hmm. If thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee. The guy writes an essay about some gal with a full back tattoo. Clearly, Hay appreciates art.

“To me it is a statement of the downfall of the family unit and society as a whole. If your little girls dress like sluts, don’t be surprised when they come home pregnant at 18,” Hay added.

Let’s talk about the downfall of the family unit and society as a whole, which has many root causes. For starters, there’s the decline of the real purchasing power of the dollar,

which makes it necessary for many people to work two or three jobs just to get by. There’s the incarceration and removal from the work force of a large swath of African-American men, especially those of fathering age, which leaves black women to raise kids alone. And then there’s a religious establishment that, on the fundamentalist side and the Catholic side, has been riddled by corruption and sex scandals. And so on.

It’s easy to diss the young as they try to figure out who they are — and who they do and do not want to be. Hay could have talked to the young lady with the Mona Lisa. But he didn’t. He scoped her out, then savaged her in print because he couldn’t take his eyes off her.

Part of the problem self-styled conservatives encounter is summed up in William F. Buckley’s statement, made many years ago in relation to his National Review magazine, that a “conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop at a time when no one is inclined to do so.” Some folks, like Hay, took that advice too seriously.

On Friday, Hay doubled down on that statement as it relates to this discussion.

“Stand up for what you believe, voice it, even if you are criticized … Political correctness will be a big contributor to the downfall of this country as well as our turning away from Christianity … Because someone felt bad about the way a group was treated is how we got affirmative action, and now we have thousands of municipal government jobs and police forces filled with unqualified workers who obtained those positions because of their race or economic background, not because they were qualified … ” Maybe he should’ve stuck with critiquing body art; history “can’t stop, won’t stop.” And the answers to the questions being asked by the people of the 21st century cannot be found in the ashes of the 20th.

SILENCE ON THE SOUTHBANK

Much of the activity during this past week’s One Spark crowdfunding festival was centered on the Northbank Riverwalk, which opened to great fanfare a decade ago, just in time for the Super Bowl. The Northbank quickly paid for itself, and has since become an iconic part of the local experience.

By contrast, the recently completed Southbank Riverwalk was eerily quiet throughout the week, with sparse traffic both day and night. Though the Riverwalk reopened in February — with ceremonious approval from a smiling mayor and a cycling city councilman — repairs were already required.

Parts of the new Southbank Riverwalk (cost: $17 million) were closed earlier in the week, thanks to a broken bilge pump underneath the Main Street Bridge, from which pedestrian access was spotty due to ongoing construction cutting off one of the walkways. It’s piecemeal patchwork that follows a number of unfortunate incidents spanning several months — accidents, protests, damage, death.

So it was, for the third straight year, The Southbank was completely frozen out of the action at One Spark – as it has been from the jazz festival since the Peyton era and ArtWalk from its inception.

The newly finished renovations — though obviously still in need of some maintenance — seem to be a step in the right direction. Hotels on the Southbank see the new Riverwalk as a boon to business. Patrons, they say, now get to see more of the area than ever before.

Mickey Hope, who works at one of those hotels, has already seen the results.

“It’s one of those common questions in the hotel that I hear a lot more of since the renovation,” Hope says. “Along with ‘Where is your bathroom?’ I get, ‘How do I get to the Riverwalk?’ all the time.”

REPUBLICANS SHUFFLE AND SWEEP

Three candidates were elected to the Florida Legislature in last week’s special election as the Republican Party reshuffled and tightened its grip on St. Johns County.

The three Republican contenders capitalized on the shakeup of the county’s representatives, resulting from Republican Senator John Thrasher’s taking the reins as president of Florida State University.

In each race, the vacated seats were handily won by the Republican Party, each candidate earning more than 65 percent of the vote. Travis Hutson (R) won the State Senate District 6 seat formerly held by Thrasher, by a comfortable margin, bringing in approximately 70 percent of the vote against Democratic hopeful David Cox. Navy veteran Paul Renner (R) brought in an almost identical percentage of total votes, roughly 69 percent, defeating Democratic challenger Adam Morley for the State House District 24 seat.

Former St. Johns County Commissioner Cyndi Stevenson (R) took District 17 by a landslide, earning approximately 77 percent of the votes from Judy Stevens (I). “I am 8 | FOLIOWEEKLY.com | APRIL 15-21, 2015

very grateful for the support I received from the citizens of St. Johns County. It’s been an honor to serve as their Commissioner and I plan to bring the skills I learned with me to Tallahassee. There is still a lot to do this session; education, water resource projects, and continuing to improve the overall quality of life are some of my main focuses,” Stevenson said after her victory. Stevenson is taking over the seat former Representative Ronald “Doc” Renuart left to challenge Hutson in the Senate race.

She said she plans to pursue the legislation rolled out by her predecessor. “One of the most notable of the bills I will continue to take through the process is House Bill 263, which helps promote and expand the craft distilleries business,” Stevenson added while discussing the importance of bringing and keeping business in St. Johns County.

FIRE CHIEF DEMOTED

After two years of upheaval among the ranks of the Fernandina Beach Fire Department and multiple investigations into firefighters’ complaints, City Manager Joe Gerrity tried to bring it all to an end, offering Fire Chief Jason Higginbotham the opportunity to step down from the top post and resume his job as the city’s Fire Marshal. Higginbotham accepted the demotion on March 19. He will retain his fire chief salary of $76,032 and, in accepting the demotion, agreed that he doesn’t have any claims against the city.

As Folio Weekly previously reported [“Something is Rotten,” March 11] former city human resources director Robin Marley never believed that Higginbotham, 35, had enough experience to be fire chief.

When a series of resignations in 2014 described the department in disarray and criticized the leadership of Higginbotham and deputy chief Fino Murallo, saying the duo used intimidation and threats to make up for their inexperience, Marley alerted Gerrity.

Deputy Police Chief Mark Foxworth noted of Higginbotham and Murallo: “Neither seems to have a level of experience to solidify the confidence of those under command.” From his interview with Higginbotham, Foxworth wrote, “He also said he likes to see his employees as numbers in the crowd instead of as individuals.”

Despite Foxworth’s report and Marley’s repeated warnings, Gerrity made no changes in fire department leadership. Gerrity subsequently fired Marley. Marley responded by filing a lawsuit alleging violations of the Florida Whistleblower Act. In accepting the demotion on March 19, Higginbotham agreed to drop a complaint he’d submitted to the city on Oct. 13 alleging that Marley, the firefighters union and city commissioners Robin Lentz and Tim Poynter had undermined his authority. Marley told Folio Weekly she was doing her job. Deputy Chief Peter Bergel will serve as interim chief.

APP-OCALYPSE Why doesn’t anyone vote at ONE SPARK?

W

ednesday afternoon was the first time I tried to vote for a One Spark project.

Before I left Folio Weekly headquarters that afternoon, I’d downloaded the festival’s smartphone application. After landing in the urban core, I’d entered through a gauntlet of EZ-up tents on Monroe Street, as creators emerged from their shaded enclaves to pitch me their projects. I stopped long enough to hear each pitch, ask a few questions and collect whatever card or flyer they were handing out. By the time I heard something that compelled the laborious effort it takes to pull one’s phone out of one’s pocket, I had already passed on the Fairtax. org guy (creator?), a project that aspired to open an allPoutine-all-the-time restaurant (gravy didn’t sound appealing in the 90-degree heat) and a bluegrass band (sorry, busking is not a business model).

But the third project pitch I heard that day — P226: #freetodou, a youth center with afterschool programs that would not be referred to as a youth center with afterschool programs (reverse psychology, kiddos, get over it) — seemed well-intentioned and reasonably achievable. The passion and charisma of the pitchman — and, quite frankly, the social pressure of the situation — provided the impetus to retrieve my phone from my pocket.

I was ready to make it official. Ready to get my vote on. The problem was, I couldn’t open the app. Every time I pressed the icon, a One Spark logo appeared — just long enough for me to read the dates of the festival — before vanishing mysteriously.

After several minutes staring at my phone’s home-screen and tapping the One Spark icon like a 3-year-old on a Little Tykes Keyboard, I spotted a young volunteer (a more native digital native) and asked for some support.

The volunteer suggested I delete the app and re-download it. I followed her advice.

No luck. I still couldn’t open the app.

So I paid a visit to the voter information booth at Hemming Park. They said my problem was a common one and asked if I had the latest iPhone ios update. I replied that it wasn’t likely — since I only vaguely understand what an ios update entails — before proceeding to make an attempt at modernizing my smartphone.

No dice. Had to update it from home.

While I’m by no means a skilled troubleshooter, I feel my next move was an informed one: Fuck it. I guess I’m not voting today.

Behavior like this is admittedly lazy, but it’s also typical among Millennials. Research shows that in order for Millennials to engage with something, personal interaction and immediacy are key components. Otherwise, we’re out.

After last year’s World’s Largest Crowdfunding Festival, the people behind One Spark wanted to improve in a few key areas. The Creator Academy was established to help festival participants polish their spiels before the event. The prize structure was increased from $10K to $15K. And, after

receiving feedback (see: complaints) that the smartphone application hindered the voting experience, One Spark spent months tweaking the app, preparing it for a more streamlined user experience.

“Not only has our team of developers done a complete front-end redesign and complete back-end restructure of the One Spark platform, they have also taken feedback from all the One Spark stakeholders and improved the app experience by streamlining contributing to and voting for One Spark creator projects, the core of our festival,” One Spark co-founder and CEO Elton Rivas told News4Jax last week.

More than 300,000 humans visited the festival this year. There were 537 projects and each individual in attendance was allowed to vote one time for as many projects as they wanted. Assuming those counting heads didn’t count Cultural Council head Tony Allegretti six times — one for every day he attended — there were a potential 160 million votes to be cast.

INITIAL VOTE-TALLYING BY THE ONE SPARK FOLKS (I think they use tallies) reported 117,169 votes cast during the six days of One Spark 2015.

That means, assuming all of them had the ability to vote — either via smartphone or at home — each attendee voted approximately 0.39 times, or about a third of the people bothered to vote for a single project.

What? Those are Jacksonville municipal election numbers.

Either visitors to the festival were unusually hard to impress (after reading this week’s The Knife on p. 33, this doesn’t seem likely), or it was difficult to vote — to the point where others, like me, reached the limits of their troubleshooting process.

At the One Spark wrap-up press conference on Monday, there were lots of big numbers being dropped. 320,000 people.

40 million One Spark hashtag impressions on social media. But the drop in votes (from 120,000 last year to 117,000 this year) was described as “very close to last year’s numbers” and “kind of a normalized rate.”

I asked CEO Rivas if there were any issues with the Wi-Fi or iPhone application that contributed to the “normalizing.”

“We didn’t have any downtime due to the bandwith loads or volume on our systems,” he said. The decrease in creators this year (about 60 fewer), Rivas said, influenced the drop in votes.

I talked to vendors in and around Hemming Park. Many complained about connectivity issues. One of them told me the Wi-Fi connectivity was so horrid, he had to wait until Monday to process all his transactions.

I didn’t get to vote for any projects at One Spark that Wednesday evening, but I did come back with Folio Weekly A&E editor Daniel A. Brown on Friday. I told him about my troubles and hoped he’d have better luck. While Dan was able to download and even open the One Spark app, he had difficulty with the One Spark Wi-Fi connection. Dan and I wanted to vote for Erdkinder: a Montessori outdoor school (I would be voting vicariously through Dan), but we were unable to connect Dan’s phone to the Wi-Fi and, when he opted to use his cell service instead, the application prompted him to enter registration information (something he’d already done).

We returned to a voter information booth where we were told that the area where we’d previously been standing had poor Wi-Fi connectivity. For better service, we were told, head to Hemming Park. Different spot, same story. “Unable to connect to One Spark Wi-Fi.” Dan and I walked around all day, sweating, listening to pitches, engaging creators, rehydrating, asking questions, sweating and rehydrating. But we did not vote. Neither one of us. Not once. Ultimately, it seemed our desire to vote was no match for the planned obsolescence of our modern devices.

But could Dan and I have been the only ones having trouble voting? What about the other 300,000 people who went Downtown last week?

Why didn’t they vote?

In a study that offends the word science by even calling it unscientific, I surveyed some of my friends and colleagues about their One Spark experiences. “Were you able to use the app?” was my research question. Both “Yes” and “No” were acceptable answers, with “N/A” serving as an appropriate response for anyone who did not attend One Spark 2015.

Here are the results: YES (I was able to use the One Spark app): 3 NO (I was unable to use the One Spark app): 10 N/A: 2 While voting is the “core” of One Spark, it wasn’t all about the voting. There were the jury prizes as well. And as far as I can tell, the jurors — who had a very difficult task, made more challenging by the confusing composition of projects in each category — did a respectable job choosing winners deserving of a cash prize.

But the jury awards process is more Shark Tank than crowdfunding. If the festival were all about impressing jurors, there’d be no point in spending six days pitching a project to a mass of people who have no way of impacting your success.

Each creator participating in One Spark 2015 paid $95 for the opportunity to present their project to potential voters. Many of the creators took days off work — if not the whole week — to be there, in downtown Jacksonville, from dawn to dusk (and beyond). They provided up to 12 hours of entertainment per day to the masses attending the festival.

One Spark’s end of the bargain was to provide the venue and the infrastructure for attendees to be a part of the process. One Spark was supposed to make it so people could vote.

I went back to One Spark on Saturday evening. Like most of the 100,000 people in attendance, I listened to some music, viewed some art, made a couple new friends, and had a beer or four. I had a swell time. But, I admit, I did not vote. I could have registered at a voter booth, gone home, pulled out the cards and flyers I’d collected and punched in the numbers of each and every project I felt deserving of my vote. But I didn’t. And I know I’m not the only one. In fact, I’m part of an overwhelming majority.

As I bobbed and weaved around the hordes at Hemming on Saturday, I stopped briefly in front of the pitch stage — a place where creators are given an opportunity to present their project from a higher elevation.

In front of the stage were roughly 30 white, fold-out chairs. While thousands reveled in the anticipation of impending nightfall, a creator presented her project to the chairs, two-thirds of which sat empty. “Oh yeah,” I thought, “that’s why we’re all here.”

Then I walked away to find a beer stand.

Marks called the hiring a PR move, likening it to the drafting of openly gay linebacker, Michael Sam, and wondered aloud if Thomas deserved the opportunity, saying “for the league, it’s great publicity.” Thomas, who refereed college games for nearly a decade, earned her way onto the field through observant and fair officiating, while Marks earned this proverbial brickbat by talking out his ass.

BOUQUETS TO JEMAL JOHNSON (JACKSONVILLE ARMADA) The first game hosted by a Jacksonvillebased professional soccer team since 1999 summoned the largest crowd (16,164 humans) ever recorded in the six-year history of the North American Soccer League. And just 12 seconds after the ball dropped in the center of EverBank Field, Armada striker Jemal Johnson launched a long ball that found the back of the net for another record — fastest goal in NASL history. Go sports!

BRICKBATS TO REP. JASON BRODEUR (R-SANFORD) whose bill (HB 7111), euphemized as the “conscience protection” bill, allows private adoption agencies, whose “written religious or moral convictions” do not permit children in their care to be adopted by gays or lesbians, to refuse to make such placements. HB 7111 came on the heels of the House’s repeal of the state’s law banning gay adoptions. Despite the fact that LGBT couples are more likely to adopt older, special-needs and minority children (often difficult groups to adopt out) and in spite of research showing same-sex couples to be capable, if not better parents — compared to their heterosexual counterparts — the Republican-controlled house felt it more important to protect the rights of religious groups to discriminate than to advocate on behalf of Florida’s children.

BOUQUETS TO TEAM NO. 1 FROM FRANK H. PETERSON ACADEMIES OF TECHNOLOGY on Jacksonville’s Westside, who were the winners of the recent district level of the national Cooking for Change competition, part of a healthy schools campaign. The group — Alyssa McClendon, Bradley Patterson and Hali Hayes — created a menu of chicken gyro with tzatziki sauce, Greek cucumber salad and a citrus parfait, which scored them a free trip to Washington, D.C., as well as cooking utensils, partial scholarships to a culinary school and the chance to cook for Congress. That winning meal also will make an appearance in Duval County school cafeterias next year. The Peterson Academy team goes up against kids from all over America in June.

alking into Richard K. Shafer’s modest home, one immediately steps into a kind of overview of local contemporary art. In the kitchen hang four pieces by Overstreet Ducasse. A Roosevelt Watson III piece is suspended in the opposite corner. His living room showcases works by Princess Simpson Rashid, Lee Harvey, Marsha Hatcher, Peter Blunt, Helen Cowart and Rhonda Bristol.

and sculpture. “Now it’s like the Phillips Collection [Washington, D.C.], I have to swap things out,” he says, of some 60-plus pieces populating his home. “But if there’s a piece that I really have to have, I’ll probably buy it even if there’s no space for it.”

There are a staggering 20 works in Shafer’s bedroom alone, including sculptures by Ed Malesky and Jeremiah Douglas. An Annelies Dykgraaf print compliments the four other pieces hanging in the upstairs hallway. “Nobody does woodcuts. She’s fantastic,” Shafer says.

In the stairwell hang a Clark Creamer piece (“My white man art!” he laughs.) and a massive

Ducasse work.

Shafer has been buying works directly from local artists since 2006 and in that time his love for their art has been reciprocated with the artists’ affections for him. And his interactions with Northeast Florida artists are much deeper than a mere collector-artist relationship.

“I think the rapport that I have with artists is not due to the fact that I’m buying their art,” says Shafer. “It’s really because, once we get to know each other, we really become friends. I think we’d be like that whether I was buying their art or not.”

A particularly strong friendship that has developed over the years is that of Shafer and Ducasse, whom Shafer calls “’Street.” “If I had not met ’Street, we would not be having this conversation.” Ducasse, who is undoubtedly one of the most incomparable painters currently working in this area, is known for creating works that address political injustice, social intolerance and even metaphysical concepts. Imbued with his own symbology, Ducasse’s pieces are visually powerful and thematically esoteric.

Yet whether through their friendship, Shafer’s discernment, or a combination thereof, the 57-year-old collector has a savvy sense of what is conveyed in the dozen Ducasse pieces that he currently owns. “Overstreet is always painting things where only he understands what it means,” Shafer laughs.

Yet back in the kitchen, Shafer decodes Ducasse paintings for me, pointing out the hidden anti-Tea Party message in one and the anti-war message in another from the artist’s Rock Paper Scissors series. “This is unusual for ’Street because there’s humor in it. The rock becomes a rocket, the scissors become the rotaries of a helicopter and the paper becomes a paper airplane. And they’re attacking each other.”

In hindsight, the bond between Shafer and Ducasse seems like kismet. The first piece of local art Shafer bought was a small painting titled Haitian Heart. Priced at $80, it was hanging at Stephen Dare’s Boomtown restaurant-theater space in 2006. “I asked ’Street, ‘Do you know who the artist is?’ And he said, ‘Yes. It’s me.’ We were meant to meet. I bought it three years before I even knew him.”

Shafer grew up in the Washington, D.C. area, where his mother encouraged his creative side. “My mom was artistic. She took us to ceramics classes. You know, it was the ’70s,” he laughs. “But she’d also buy prints.

One time, when my dad was away on business, she painted this one wall a glossy black and she put prints on it that just popped and I thought it was just awesome.

had wallpaper within a month.“ His mother also took the young Shafer to MoMA in Manhattan, a visit that had an influential effect on his worldview. “I saw Picasso’s Guernica and Three Musicians. That really started my real love affair with art.”

Shafer eventually joined the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a software programmerdeveloper. Last stationed at NSA in Fort Meade, Maryland, after 20 years he retired and in 2000 moved to Jacksonville. He now works as a software tester. “I like to be on the testing side. It’s less stressful.”

As Shafer continues to guide me through his home-slash-gallery, his passion for these works is evident. Princess Simpson Rashid’s Stanton Lines, a large-scale acrylic in the living room, is a particularly prized work.

“I obsessed over having this,” he says of a piece that features small figures ascending a stairwell emblazoned with the text, “history,” “education” “society” and “freedman.” The title alludes to the original Stanton School, the first school for African-American children in Jacksonville.

Shafer originally saw the painting in 2013 but it took him two years to save up the $3,000 asking price. “I think Princess held onto this piece for good reason. Sometimes artists have pieces that are really special to them: They have an idea and it works and it’s beautiful and they really don’t want to sell it. But they’ll sell those pieces to me. Because they know that I love it and will honor it.”

Mere feet away hang three canvasses by the late painter/arts-agitator Lee Harvey, who died from cancer last November. A larger still life of flowers is flanked by two smaller studies with the same theme. Since Harvey was known as such a longtime agent provocateur of the area arts scene, producing incendiary works that attacked religious zealots, the wealthy elite and delusional patriotism, these meditative pieces offer another insight to his overall body of work.

“Lee painted those in memoriam to himself because he had cancer. Thankfully, that went into remission and he had a few years to live in New York, which was wonderful. And then he went back to painting

I buy art for love.”))) decapitated strippers over and over and over,” he laughs. “But this is some of the most creative work I’d ever seen him do.”

A Rhonda Bristol portrait of MaVynee Betsch, “The Beach Lady,” hangs over the mantle. “She watches over me,” Shafer explains. In the corner stands a large, custommade bookshelf. A collaboration between furniture artist Peter Blunt and Ducasse, this is the sole work that Shafer commissioned.

“When people think of art, they invariably think of painting and maybe sculpture. But let me tell you, Peter Blunt is one of the best artists working in Jacksonville,” says Shafer.

“He’s a wonderful craftsman but everything is made with a level of artistry and a dose of whimsy. He’s like part Ethan Allen and part Dr. Seuss.”

An elaborate series of shelves hold Shafer’s books, CDs and DVDs. Each side of the piece features original paintings by Ducasse that are depictions of milestones of his friendship with Shafer, including an image of the pair at Art Basel Miami Beach.

Many of the artists Shafer collects are featured in this year’s Through Our Eyes exhibit, a much-anticipated show presented at the Ritz Theatre & Museum that each year features works by local African-American artists. At the Ritz on April 21, Shafer

discusses his philosophy and gives advice on collecting art. “I never buy art as an investment.

I think that’s bullshit. I buy art for love.”

An hour after our exhaustive tour of what will surely be called the Shafer Collection is finished, he wraps up this walkthrough. Shafer admits he’s baffled as to why others aren’t snapping up all of this local art, “But you know what? That’s great news for me. That’s how I can buy all of this art; because people don’t realize how good these damn artists are.”

Until Shafer’s collection outgrows this current place, he will keep his eye out for more art to pick up, while deepening his alreadystrong bonds with area artists, the very people who bring this arts-based enrichment into his life. “Man, buy work because you love it, you feel connected to it and because it will make your life happier. And you know what? My art makes my life happier.”

Hungarian import WHITE GOD is part of a rare breed of contemporary cinema

SPEAKING TO THE MOTHER OF HIS PRESENT LOVER, an underage teenager, Errol Flynn blames his own mother for shaping his attitudes toward women. “But you’re a gentleman among gentlemen,” Florence Aadland (Susan Sarandon) declares, fully complicit in her daughter’s illicit relationship with the 49-year-old actor, one of the most notorious rakes in Hollywood history.

“Florence, I am and always will be, quite literally,” Flynn (Kevin Kline) replies, “an absolute son of a bitch.”

Just released on DVD after a three-week theatrical run late last summer, The Last of Robin Hood is the story of Flynn’s well-documented relationship with Beverly Aadland (Dakota Fanning) from 1957-’59. She was 15 when he first met and slept with her, though she was passing for 18 at the time, working as a Hollywood extra with the full support and connivance of her showbiz-crazy mom.

Beverly was with Errol two years later when he died of a heart attack in Canada, a fact which became tabloid fodder when the juicy details went public.

With Beverly, however, Flynn declares he has found true love, a confession The Last of Robin Hood would seem to support, however doomed and unrealistic the “affair to remember” turns out to be.

Accordingly, Flynn publicly declares his intention to marry the girl, just as he intends to include her in his last will and testament. However, as Flynn’s lawyer later tells Mrs. Aadland about the dead man’s intentions, everything “is typically a mess.”

The movie touches on some fascinating incidents, such as Flynn’s alleged attempt to coax Stanley Kubrick into casting him as Humbert Humbert in the film version of Lolita, with Beverly as the title character. Kubrick declines, however, citing Beverly’s ineptitude as well as her age – at 16 or 17, she’s too old for the part.

Far too little time is spent on Flynn’s last major film role in The Roots of Heaven, which was shot in Africa under the direction of John Huston. The real-life tales of that outing nearly rival those of The African Queen, including Flynn’s bouts with the bottle as well as with his director, who reportedly decked him in a fistfight. More could also have been done with Flynn’s very last film, Cuban Rebel Girls, a pro-Castro vehicle that Flynn wrote and starred in, alongside Beverly, while the Cuban Revolution was still in progress.

Unfortunately, The Last of Robin Hood fails to live up to its potential (much like Flynn himself) despite Kline’s spot-on perfect performance.

Jude Law played Flynn in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator and Peter O’Toole’s fictional character in My Favorite Year was clearly based on the rakish, alcoholic actor as well. Good as both impersonations were, however, neither comes close to Kline’s interpretation here.

Sarandon is also quite good, convincingly muted in her own turn as a rabid stage mom. In the crucial role of Beverly, however, Fanning is the weak link in the equation. She is sympathetic as a kind of victim, but it’s hard to see what Flynn might have seen in her, given his predilections.

The movie also needed a bigger budget and a longer running time to tell its fascinating story and highlight Kline’s amazing performance. For Errol Flynn fans, however, The Last of Robin Hood is still a must-see.

THE DUFF Rated PG-13 A sequel to The Simpsons? Don’t we all wish.

This teen melodrama isn’t a paean to Springfield’s favorite beer, but the story of a girl who learns she’s considered a DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) within her social circle. The narrative of identities remade and bitch-queens dethroned is bound to captivate, especially if you’re too young to have seen Mean Girls, let alone She’s All That. One lucky preview attendee called the movie “a party.” Then again, Duff Man says a lot of things. Costars Bella Thorne, Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell and Allison Janney. — S.S. FREETOWN Not Rated Those Mormon moviemakers sure are getting crafty. The promo materials for this movie suggest some sort of latter-day Hotel Rwanda, with serious-looking darkskinned folk searching the horizon for signs of a better future.

In actuality, the movie is a partisan portrait of some Liberian LDS missionaries on the run from religious persecution. The kind of persecution, say, that had branded you as wicked

He learns Dom’s “family” is just fine: Brian (Paul Walker) and wife Mia (Jordana Brewster) are settling down with their son, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is still trying to get her memory back, and Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) are still clowning around. The story would be simple if it was just about Deckard tracking them down, but this F&F franchise doesn’t do simple. Given 30 days to get his affairs in order, he enlists the guy who washes his car, Darnell (Kevin Hart), to teach him to survive in prison. Director Etan Cohen is asking us to believe that even though James is smart enough to run billion-dollar hedge funds, he’s so ignorant he thinks Darnell has been in prison just because he’s African-

Jimmy’s estranged son Michael (Joel Kinnaman) works as a limo driver and, through a weird coincidence, Michael sees Danny murder in cold blood.

HOME Rated PG The HBO production of The Normal Heart showed that Jim Parsons can handle a lot more than The Big Bang Theory. So what has he chosen for his all-important transition to mainstream cinema? Lilo and Sheldon! You don’t have to strain too hard to hear a whole mess of Dr. Cooper in his voicing of Oh, an alien who strikes up a friendship with a human girl. IT FOLLOWS ***@ Rated R Writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s premise is so simple, we know the destination will be terrifying. Teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) goes to the movies on her first date with Hugh (Jake Weary). While there, Hugh is spooked by a woman who’s apparently invisible to Jay. On their second date, after car sex, Hugh, in a highly questionable demonstration of pillow talk, covers Jay’s face with a chloroform-soaked rag. When she wakes, Jay is in a warehouse, strapped in a wheelchair, as Hugh nervously explains, “It’s gonna follow you. Somebody gave it to me. And I gave it to you.” Soon the titular “It” arrives in the form of a lumbering, zombie-like nude woman. The combination of inventive camera work, a pulse-pounding soundscape, Mitchell’s recurring motifs and scenes that contrast the ’burbs with the ’hood, helps elevate this above typical horror fare. OLD FASHIONED Rated PG-13 It’s an old-fashioned (what are the odds?) love story in which a young woman falls for an antique shop owner who’s a “reformed frat boy” – my favorite character description ever. In this level-headed, unexploitative, antisensationalist Christian film, the chief narrative complication is its hero’s wholesome determination to keep coitus within the bounds of holy matrimony. THE WANDERING MIND

CAITLIN HURD captures dream-like reveries between moments

B

rooklyn-based painter Caitlin Hurd creates tableaus of floating humans and animals suspended in the ephemeral instants between moments. Rendering in oil on canvas, her overall work has a ghostly quality that shifts the mundane into archetypes. Sister Cat (2011, 83˝x71˝) features a mesmerized woman floating in space, as two partially formed felines surround her. In Somewhere Else (2012, 12˝x12˝), twin male figures lie in the grass staring upward, as an abstract cityscape seems to burn in the distance.

A native of North Boston, Massachusetts, the 36-year-old Hurd has shown her work in more than 30 group and solo shows. In addition, she’s created original pieces for several public art projects and has been featured in publications including Hi-Fructose and the New York Post.

Daydreams from Brooklyn, her new show that opens this week at Florida Mining Gallery on the Southside, features five works that continue her ongoing series dealing with the transitory thoughts and trances that fall between the cracks of time.

Folio Weekly snapped out of our pipe dreams long enough to fire off some email questions to Hurd. What follows are highlights from that exchange.

Folio Weekly: For the uninitiated, how do you describe your art?

Caitlin Hurd: I would describe my art as surreal, floating figures and animals that try to convey a feeling of displacement.

Your paintings have an allegorical quality but

I can’t really decipher the narrative. Do you agree that there is an allegorical/fable-like meaning to your work?

I agree with you. The reason I believe my paintings read like that is most likely the way I choose what I choose to paint. It is based on what I am attracted to at the time. I paint that, and then analyze the painting to see what else it needs and — not to sound too “mystical” — I

The painting is done when it is done. Then I sit with the painting and figure out what it means to me; it’s like I’m analyzing a dream and things are revealed, so I didn’t know I was painting about.

Your work explores these “suspended-in-time moments when the mind is somewhere else.”

Could you give me an example of these moments? Do you mean it’s like something akin to driving a car and suddenly “coming to” and realizing that you’ve arrived at the destination?

These moments are where I think and come up with ideas where I replay my day. When my body is still, and my mind is somewhere else.

These moments became more prominent in your mind after you survived being run over by a car. What happened? Were you nearly killed?

I was riding my bike home late one night after working on the painting Family Portrait. A taxi

took a sharp turn into me and ran me over. I was dragged down the street until it stopped.

I was actually trapped under the car until the FDNY paramedics were able to jack the car up and pull me out. Because I was under there so long, my skin was cooked like a steak. I had third-degree full-thickness burns on my left side and arm. And one of my kidneys was shattered. I was lucky to have survived. Since I was in the hospital for over a month and my recovery was long, I had a lot of time with my “suspended-in-time moments.”

Today there are many reported benefits about mindfulness and returning to the present moment. It’s essentially homogenized Buddhism.

Do you feel that, contrary to this, a wandering mind has its own kind of assets and benefits?

I really do believe that letting your mind wander can make you smarter. The benefits of detaching from smartphones and other devices can allow people to be bored and the brain can come up with so many wonderful things if it is not always distracted.

Since your work deals with the dreamlike and otherworldliness, do you attempt to put yourself in a similar mind state through meditation or other methods?

I do meditate from time to time, however, I don’t think of this as the time I come up with ideas. I come up with ideas for paintings just by being alone in my studio with no distractions and sift through pictures or simply stare off into space.

COVER BANNED A WORD OF CLARIFICATION BEFORE WE BEGIN: I think the One Spark festival is, on the whole, a good thing. It gives entrepreneurs an opportunity to get their ideas in front of large numbers of people (and potential investors), it’s a boon for local businesses, and it makes it look as if Downtown Jacksonville could someday be an entertainment and arts destination (strong emphasis on the word “could”).

But there are many problems, which is to be expected with any event of this magnitude.

Last week in this column, I expressed concern about the inability – or unwillingness – of crowdsourcing platforms like Kickstarter and One Spark to offer guarantees to investors that their money will be spent on the promised projects or, at the very least, present some avenue for recourse when things go south. But that’s a bureaucratic quibble that may not be sorted out. As long as people are willing to give money away, no strings attached, there will be some level of exploitation.

The bone I’ll pick for the rest of this column is one that could – and should – be addressed if One Spark organizers want to show they truly care about their “creators.” And I’ll be driving this knife very deep, in hopes of hitting that very bone and maybe a few nerves along the way.

I’ve attended One Spark for the past three years, first as a reluctant “creator” and twice as an attendee. Every time, I have witnessed the unforgivable. There, in the center of the action, at Hemming Park and along Laura Street performed – cover bands.

Cover bands.

Let that sink in for a moment. At a festival that encourages innovation, ingenuity and uniqueness appear the least innovative, least ingenious and least original groups imaginable.

Let it be known that I am in three cover bands, and that I make a good portion of my living playing covers. This is not an indictment of cover musicians. My criticism is aimed squarely at event organizers, those who choose to reward blandness with a primo exhibit space in the festival center.

festival, geared toward uniting the brightest and most creative minds with investors and financiers, that relies on artists and musicians to attract a crowd to what would otherwise be a yawn-inducing series of startup pitchmen lining the streets with their Next Big Thing, would admit musicians who play other people’s music and place them in the most visible spot in the fest.

It’s shameful.

That night I posted a profanity-laced rant on Facebook (as that is where the fi nest in intellectual discourse unfolds these days), to which a guitarist friend responded: “Those guys are really solid musicians who actually write and play their original tunes at gigs quite a bit.” Fine, then open with an original.

Make the bulk of your set originals. If you’re so fucking badass, show us – with your original, unique and innovative creations. Not a goddamned rip-off Bruno Mars song.

Again, I’m not faulting the musicians (so much), but the officials who select them, who aren’t fully vetting the acts or simply don’t give a rat’s ass about the quality or uniqueness of those acts. And here’s the great irony: If I were a visual artist, and I painted exact replicas of famous pieces of art and applied for a top spot at One Spark, the organizers would burn my canvases and laugh me out of the building. And yet they rubber-stamp, indeed encourage, bands that do the very same thing, only sonically. I know this because I called and asked. The One Spark rep to whom I spoke said cover bands are welcome. Very welcome.

This, friends, is bad policy. It does a huge disservice to original artists; it says to the person two tents down, “This highly polished and wellfunded cover band deserves a hot spot while you, struggling songwriter, can share a tent with three others on a side street. Good luck!”

So I make this argument for any original musician who played One Spark. Because for every cover band that appeared (I’ve been told there were more than one this year, not to mention DJs spinning bullshit club music, a further disgrace), there are a host of original acts that will not be seen or will be drowned out by cover tunes and the sheepish crowd gathered to listen.

THE KNIFE

THURSDAY, APRIL 9: I return home from my recent One Spark visit fuming. I’d been there for literally 10 minutes, and the first thing I hear is an announcer barking, “Get ready for the best band in the South!” I approach the tent at the corner of Laura Street near the library. It’s a perfect spot to be seen, to exhibit your talent, highly trafficked and coveted by many. And what does “the best band in the South” open with? Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven.”

I walk away, shaking my head in disbelief, elbowing aside the crowd gathered to dig this amazing cover band, to dance to a song that currently has 334 million plays on YouTube. A song the band did not write and, if BMI or ASCAP were within earshot, could have been fined for performing. A song whose verse is pretty much Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” with different lyrics.

In other words, the epitome of unoriginal, uninnovative and ungenious.

I continue down Laura Street, and there, just a few yards away, is a friend of mine, an acoustic artist whose original music is completely ignored by passersby. I catch his eye; he grimaces at me as he sings. I approach him and say, “Right there on the corner, a cover band is playing.” He sighs, “It doesn’t surprise me.” To his credit, he keeps playing as Bruno Mars wafts down the street.

I tried to reconcile this. How a wonderful

One Spark organizers, you need to change this policy, or next year, I am coming downtown with a duffle bag full of my own renderings of classic paintings to do a little guerilla fundraising all my own.

It refers to the marks made on human skin by clothing that’s too tight. As you know, the effect is temporary. Once the close-fitting garment is removed, the imprint will disappear as the skin restores its normal shape and texture. The days ahead are a time to experience a metaphorical version of karelu. You’ll shed some form of constriction; it may take a while to regain your full flexibility and smoothness.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In the mid-19th century, the entrance exam for the British Royal Navy was quite odd. Some candidates were required to write down the Lord’s Prayer, recite the multiplication table for the number three, get naked and jump over a chair, and drink a glass of sherry. I’m guessing your initiation or rite of passage may, at least initially, seem as puzzling or nonsensical. You might be hard-pressed to understand how it’s pertinent to the next chapter of your life story. And yet I suspect you ultimately come to the conclusion — though it may take some time — that this transition was an excellent leadin and preparation for what’s to come.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Georgia is not just an American state. It’s also a country that’s at the border of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Many people who live there speak the Georgian language. They have a word, shemomedjamo, that refers to what happens when you love the taste of the food you’re eating so much, you pile it in your mouth well past the time when you’re full. Use it as a metaphor for what I hope you won’t do in the days ahead: get too much of a good thing. On the other hand, it’s fine to get just the right, healthy amount of a good thing.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): In 1909, Sergei Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes, a Parisian ballet company that revolutionized the art form. The collaborative efforts he catalyzed were unprecedented. He drew on the talents of visual artists Picasso and Matisse, composers Stravinsky and Debussy, designer Coco Chanel, and playwright Jean Cocteau, teaming them up with top choreographers and dancers. His main goal was not primarily to entertain, but rather to excite and inspire and inflame. That’s the spirit you’ll thrive on in the coming weeks. It’s not time for nice diversions and comfy satisfactions. Go in quest of Ballets Russes-like bouts of arousal, awakening, and delight.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “Don’t ever tame your demons — always keep them on a leash.” That’s a line from a song by Irish rock musician Hozier. Does it have any meaning for you?

Can your personal demons prove useful if you keep them wild but under your control? If so, how might they be useful? Could they provide primal energy you wouldn’t otherwise possess? Might their presence be a reminder of the fact that everyone you meet has their own demons and therefore deserves your compassion?

In the early days, gold nuggets were lying around on the ground in plain sight, or relatively easy to find in gravel beds at the bottom of streams. But later prospectors had to work harder, developing methods to extract the gold from rocks. One way to detect the presence of the precious metal was through the use of nitric acid, which corroded any substance that wasn’t gold. The term “acid test” refers to that process. It’s a good time to use the metaphorical version of an acid test as you ascertain whether what you’ve discovered is truly golden.

Entrepreneur Richard Hellman changed that. He developed an efficient system to produce and distribute the condiment at a lower cost. He created effective advertising campaigns. The increasing availability of refrigeration helped, too, making mayonnaise more practical. I foresee a possibility of a comparable evolution in your sphere: transformation of a specialty item into a mainstay, or evolution of a rare pleasure into a regular occurrence.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Piscean author Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated over 40 books for kids.

Midway through his career, his publisher dared him to make a new book using no more than 50 different words. Accepting the challenge, Seuss produced Green Eggs and Ham, which became the fourth best-selling English-language children’s book in history. Learn from Seuss’s efforts. Take advantage of the limitations life has given you. Be grateful for the way those limitations compel you to be efficient and precise.
