ELLAMENO BEAT

T

he Salt Life Festival opens with a bang this year as high-energy, progressive roots musicians The Ellameno Beat take the stage. The band’s unique sound is a blend of funk, soul, disco and reggae elements that combine to create truly original surf-culture music. Their sound has an ebullient, expansive nature that’s both remarkable for its sophisticated creativity and for its accessible simplicity. And because the South Florida group channels an original progressive roots

sound reflective of their life-long passion for soulful expression through music and the ocean, it’s no surprise that the initiated call them “savage” and “on point.” The band’s dedication to making sure their music makes a difference doesn’t stop there. The Ellameno Beat support and advocate surf culture, but they put their money where their mouth is by frequently donating part or all of the proceeds from their gigs or record sales toward excellent causes like the Mauli Ola Foundation, which helps people with genetic diseases.

rom their earliest incarnation—an acoustic duo circa 2002—Simplified’s Clee Laster and Chris Sheridan displayed innate musical capabilities passed down from family members and inspired by a diverse collection of original influences. While the founding pair revved up and charmed the Charlotte, NC, crowds, they had a;reday begun writing original songs. Then, in 2003, the full band took shape as Simplified. As much a dedicated touring machine as talented songwriters, it wasn’t long before Simplified’s beach-positive and uplifting sound

caught on. Building on their devoted fan base in the Southeast, an enthusiastic buzz grew into a nationwide demand, and they found themselves playing for larger audiences. From Key West to New York City and throughout the Midwest, their hard work, perseverance and commitment have been key to their success. In 2011, their song “Shall We Begin” was featured on ESPN’s ‘Kick off to College GameDay.’ Currently their hit “Gettin Home,” is featured in the video game NASCAR The Game 2013 and they have been praised as one of Pandora Radio’s top-played indie rock bands.

OF GOOD NATURE

T

his indie rock-reggae group, formed in Charlotte, NC, in 2011, knew from the start that the thriving music scene in the Queen City would be vital to their early success. By blending rich musical styles, the group is able to transcend the foundations of rock-reggae painted with progressive instrumentals of funk and rock n’ roll. The sophisticated fusion of genres stems from the band’s ability to bring their different musical styles together in a cohesive and exciting synergy. 10 • SALT LIFE FESTIVAL • March 17, 2018

In addition to having played and toured extensively, Of Good Nature has shared the stage with headliners like Sublime with Rome, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Arrested Development, Natasha Beddingfield, Dropkick Murphys, Matt Nathanson, Keller Williams, Blues Traveler, Common Kings, George Porter Jr, PASSAFIRE, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, The Movement, Tribal Seeds, The Supervillains, Ballyhoo! and many others.

TREEHOUSE!

F

or more than seven years, the guys from TreeHouse! have spent the majority of their days as road warriors, blazing across sprawls of highway so that, at night, they could play the unapologetic, enthusiastic blend of reggae jam-rock that has brought them national attention. After teaming up with musical icons like The Wailers, 311, Dirty Heads, Pepper, Stick Figure and SOJA along their journey and becoming ingrained with the spirit of the bands who laid the road before them, the band 14 • SALT LIFE FESTIVAL • March 17, 2018

of road warriors continue to spread their roots coast to coast. TreeHouse! songs really do seem to resonate in your soul, inspiring listeners to rise above adversity, extend and experience gratitude, and seek unity. This band truly believes that, for every setback, there’s a step up waiting for you if you keep your focus; for every day, there’s a blessing to count; and for every event, we must recognize we are a part of it all. Maybe that’s how they ended up at this celebration we call the Salt Life Festival.
