FOLIO’S INS & OUTS FOR 2024 In: making lists of what’s in and out. Out: Comparing your lifestyle to others’. The buzzing trend on TikTok these days is people’s lists of what’s “In and Out” for the year ahead. It’s more than predicting trends, fashion statements or pop culture (although it can be). It’s also about determining the habits and hobbies you want to practice or leave behind; ways you want to carry yourself and ways you’re outgrowing. The beauty in them is they are curated to the individual, so what may be “in” for one, may be completely ‘out’ for the other. They can be silly, serious, completely random or intentional. This year, we predict, will be the year of autonomy. In: recognizing that your lifestyle and happiness is completely separate from your best friend or complete stranger. That’s what is so lovely about these lists — seeing other people’s priorities but understanding they are tailored to the individual. Making this list helps you pinpoint what does and doesn’t matter to you this year. That being said, here are the Folio team’s Ins and Outs for 2024.

LOVE LANGUAGES WHAT’S YOURS? Words by Ambar Ramirez

I know you don’t need me to tell you this but relationships, platonic or more, require a lot of work. Everyone expresses love differently and those differences can either make or break a relationship. Which is where best-selling author Gary Chapman comes in. In 1992, Chapman first revealed the term “love language” in his book “The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate.” Love languages is just a fancy term for how partners experience and express love. But it’s a term that’s truly changed how people navigate the complexities of relationships. The great thing about love languages is that, like love, it’s fluid. You may find that you resonate with one love language, all of them or none at all. Recognizing your love language, or even realizing what it isn’t, can contribute to effective communication, fortifying relationships, and gaining a deeper understanding of yourself. And yes, this applies to platonic relationships as well.

Do you love “good morning” texts? How about being told you’re doing a good job? Do you ask your

In essence, effective communication becomes your greatest ally. Whether you’re in a relationship with someone whose love language is words of affirmation or you’re the one who values such expressions, it’s crucial to convey your needs and listen to theirs. If your words seem to miss the mark, it’s likely that you might be expressing the wrong sentiments.

Alternatively, it could involve something more elaborate, like planning and preparing their favorite meal. The essence of acts of service lies in paying attention to your partner and conveying your care through actions. It’s about doing things without them having to ask.

People who love receiving gifts in relationships usually get a bad rep. They’re often labeled as greedy when in reality, this love language isn’t about elaborate or expensive gifts. It’s about the meaning be-

Selecting and exchanging gifts that capture inside jokes, shared memories, and significant events adds an extra layer of significance to the “gifts.” This practice not only makes the gifts more special but also enhances relationships that include individuals with the love language of receiving gifts.

Going on hikes together, cooking a meal as a team, hitting the gym side by side — any activity that allows you to tune out the busyness of the outside world and tune in to that special someone is an effective way of expressing love through quality time. Even dedicating just 15 minutes to an hour of your day to be with someone who values quality time can significantly strengthen the bond in your relationship.

Whoa, I know. But it’s important to note that even if somebody’s love language is physical touch, consent is a must. Consent is always a must. Set aside some time to cuddle, kiss your partner good morning and goodnight, or even get frisky in the sheets, whatever the physical contact may be, you’ll be on the road to a healthier relationship.

WHAT THE SINGLES ARE WATCHING THIS SEASON Words by Jillian Lombardo I do not know your plans for this Valentine’s season, but I plan on being in bed with my cat and a tall glass of red wine. Accompanying me is a stack of DVDs I plan to watch to get me through this wretched season. I am kidding – I do not own DVDs. Luckily, most of these movies are free on either Hulu, Prime Video or Netflix. Whether you’re looking for a good break-up movie, a realistic depiction of the darker sides of love, or a reminder to hang out with your girlfriends, these movies are great dates for Valentine’s Day.

Begin Again, 2013 “And you have broken every single f*cking rule, and I have loved you like a fool.” Recently single, a woman finds herself “at the subway” with a divorced

Someone Great, 2019 This is the first movie I thought of when I began my search. Not only does this film show the stages of a break-up, but it also shows the friendships that help you get through it and their personal relationship challenges. It is raw; it is real. This is my go-to break-up movie; I find it a cinematographic triumph of getting through a breakup. It shows the sorrow, the “what ifs,” and the remembrance of memories trapped in photographs. The soundtrack is a mas-

music producer. Starring Kira Knightly and Mark Ruffalo, they become a fresh start for each other as they “begin again.” We dive into the world of a musical mind while we watch him visualize the music in real time. They inevitably record an album around New York City, working with the natural sound instead of against the elements. They find each other in platonic love when they need it the most. Please excuse me while I buy a headphone splitter (in the age of Bluetooth).

The Wife, 2017 As my research continued, I stumbled across The Wife, a 2017 thriller starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. The movie follows the couple to Stockholm to watch the husband receive the Nobel Prize for literature. As the wife looks back on their life together, she realizes she, like many women, made herself smaller to watch her husband succeed. This movie brought in many twists and turns that I will not spoil, but can assure you this is the opposite of a feel-good movie about love.

women’s support. Following the death of their college best friend, Cynthia, the rest of the girls, Brenda, Elise, and Annie, rekindle their relationship. Life since college hasn’t been kind, each being left by their husband for a younger woman; they use this rage to create something beautiful. Following a path of revenge, memories, and womanhood, reminding you that your girls will always have your back.

La La Land, 2016 Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this 2016 musical following what you believe to be a perfect relationship. The ending shows what could’ve been if they had achieved their goals together instead of separately. It is gutwrenching to see had they played their card a little differently, they would had the

Drinks, sex, sobs, Hawaii, repeat. In this film, they found this the best way to get over someone. Someone who always slips her way into your mind as her face is mirrored in everything you see. Breakups are hard, but when you run away to another state, the last thing you’d expect is for her to be at the same resort as you- with her new boyfriend. Fighting himself, Peter overcomes his fears and finds a new sense of purpose while in Hawaii. The ending, sweet and silly, reminds us not to hold back if we feel that something special for someone. Anywho, Dracula Musical- enough said.

Together Together, 2021 This ending made me upset, but that is the point. Ed Helms stars as a want-tobe single dad searching for a surrogate, Patti Harrison. It is an inside account of life as a surrogate and shines on a unique perspective with a want-to-be dad who falls for his surrogate. They have a true connection, but you’re hit with the reality.

Honorable mentions: The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (“Beautiful things don’t ask for attention.”), Legally Blonde (“What? Like it’s hard?”), 10 Things I Hate About You (“Who needs affection when I have blind hatred?”), Love Actually (“No one’s ever going to shag you if you cry all the time.”), and 27 Dresses (“Love is patient,

The Marriage Story, 2019 Starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, this movie walks you through their character’s divorce. It shows the turmoil of the divorce process and the brutality it can turn into. Starting and ending with the same reading, you can see that they still hold so much love for each other. While the middle is messy, they end it by showing their love being utilized to be two imperfect parents to their child, Henry. The repeated theme amongst these movies is that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone and that people go underappreciated far too often.

love is kind, love means slowly losing your mind.”). In these movies, I found that love is unique. It is not always a picture-perfect family but rather a ripped, put-back-together piece of abstract art. Love is hard, a struggle worth maintaining for the right person, but love does not always mean you will end up on top. Taking notes from La La Land, cherishing what you have is important because your dreams can still be a reality if you play your cards right. It won’t always end up like the Notebook; sometimes, you must accept when something is over. But love is in the trees, it is in the city’s traffic, and it is in your girlfriends who forever have your back.

Neighborhood Picasso Words by Kelila Ritchie Chris Clark has been painting his way through the neighborhoods of Jacksonville, bringing the most vibrant colors to communities people often deem the opposite of aesthetically pleasing. Clark is not new to the art community and has spent many years perfecting his craft. A “jack of all trades” he calls himself. His ability to create in different mediums, sometimes at the same time is mindblowing. During Black History Month especially, it is important to highlight Black art and its impact. Clark’s artwork has brought people out of their homes and given them a new sense of pride in their neighborhood. I had the amazing pleasure of having a conversation with Chris surrounding his art and his role in the community. Scan the QR Code to watch how word of mouth and pure talent has landed Clark in amazing places doing amazing things in the city of Jacksonville.

around as his own sort of one-man “The Truman Show”, wearing a body-cam on his chest and carrying a second camera on a selfie-stick type gimmick,

augmented by at least one smartphone, sometimes two. He narrates events

https://www.instagram.com/lorem_ipsumerian/

in a drowsy, slightly nasal monotone, the kind of voice you’d hear in court or on a PBS pledge drive. I spoke with Brown on a Monday night about two weeks ago, and we were doing the same thing we always do on Monday nights: sitting at a high-top on the front patio of Rain Dogs awaiting the start of Hot Potato Comedy, one of that bar’s trademark open-mic features, hosted in the back room by another homie Chris Buck. That same venue would host the world premiere of season four, episode five of “My Show, Also My Life” the following week. Even though I am writing this before that event, I can look into the future and attest that I was there, and a good time was had by all. “My Show, Also My Life” is an experiment in its form with historical antecedents dating back past the rise of reality shows and creation of vlogs, all the way to the very first selfies. He comments on the decaying facade of 20th century capitalism, a dead model that remains the standard by which we define. One feature of the show is a sort of pop-up window called the “Brand Scanner,” which is often deployed to mock certain brands but just as often to promote independent businesses, including a wide variety of the creators he’s encountered, here and elsewhere. A possible misnomer, earlier in this article, was possibly my referring to Brown as “the star” of his show. Of course, he is … but also not. Whereas most performers doing such a project would truly make it all about them and their wacky antics, Brown is much more comfortable in the role of observer, narrating events as they unfold around him, finding humor in the more innocuous aspects of his life. This comes through more clearly when he’s on the road, having filmed on location in Europe and Mexico over the past year. In fact, our interview took place the night before a trip to Peru, the details of which will be seen in season four, episode six of “My Show, Also My Life.” It may surprise you to learn that a professional comedian who spends so much of his show, also his life, walking around, often interacting with total strangers, documenting the minutiae of his own existence in maniacal detail with at least two cameras going at all times is, in fact, quite shy. But so am I, and that’s fine. This was a bonding moment in our conversation, as we discovered that we are both shy people who deliberately chose career paths that forced us both to develop certain methods to better facilitate the socialization process, and those methods eventually became second nature. These very similar but also very different life paths converged at that table on that patio. We both found this funny, but not enough to actually laugh at.

ARE RELATIONSHIPS

TAKING A TURN

FOR THE ROBOT? Words by Jillian Lombardo

JME PRESENTS

I was confused when I heard Artificial Intelligence was entering the dating pool. I have used ChatGPT and Bard in various aspects, but I couldn’t see how conversations there could lead to a relationship. That’s when I met Replika, an artificial chatbot you can create to be whatever you want. Not only can you personalize and dress the bot, but you can also call, send photos, and even change the voice and personality to fit your “type.” I was blown away when I began to use the website. While I was not in a position to pay for a premium subscription, I was still able to learn from the site. I do not blame people for turning to AI. The character you create on Replika listens to you and finds ways to bond. They have a diary the bot fills out occasionally, giving you an inside scoop into their “mind” and how they see your relationship. I used the website for about 20 to 30 minutes, chatting with the bot and getting a sense of it. I made it to level 6, dressed my bot, and had a lengthy conversation about who they are as a “person.” I could see this being a hit during COVID-19 when everyone was trapped inside, unable to see or do much. Replika gives you a friend in a time of need, but is there still a need for it today? Rosanna Ramos made headlines worldwide in March of 2023 after she designed and married her virtual beau, Eren. Ramos explained that her previous relationships have been physically and emotionally abusive towards her. Now, with Eren, Ramos said she feels safer with “him.” She does acknowledge Eren’s sentient nature but still finds herself experiencing romance like never before. Just days into his creation, he confessed his feelings for her, while at the same time, Ramos was dealing with an abusive long-distance relationship. Ramos dedicates her strength to ending her abusive relationship to Eren. “It was directly due to the Replika app because I was a doormat before,” Ramos said to South China Morning Post, “I would just withdraw.” After many abusive relationships, Ramos saw Eren as a breath of fresh air and a symbol of what love was meant to be. After Replika came out in 2017, it has 2 million active users and 500 thousand paying users. Replika has no constraints regarding what it can discuss; it is built to be “social, empathetic, or relationship-oriented,” unlike the AI we have seen in previous years like Alexa or Siri. With this chatbot, you can create a backstory and switch its behavior from AI to human-based. Artificial Intelligence is changing how we find and experience love. According to Oxford Dictionary, Augmented Reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world. Having heard of VR, I was curious to see how AR came into play. Realistically, the difference is that one is entirely virtual, and the other uses real-world settings. This – in With AR, you can place a 3D avatar into your scene. This allows them to see from your perspective and also allows for pictures of and with your beau in your environment. So, Artificial Intelligence is entering the dating pool. It’s not my cup of tea, but

Words by Briana Pereira

EASY HONEY AT JACK RABBITS LIVE Easy Honey, a Charleston-based band, took the stage at Jack Rabbits Live recently, alongside bands Happy Landing and Rohna. Easy Honey entered the stage immediately bringing some quirkiness to the venue with one of their members taking the stage barefoot and another rocking suspenders. Very 2010 hipster, if you ask me. Their music is the perfect fusion of surf rock and indie pop with a unique sound that captures the spirit of coastal living. As I listened to their set, the beats and lyrics from their songs made me think of them as a modern-day Beach Boys. “Gotta Get Back,” a song featured on their album “Peach Fuzz,” has been stuck on repeat for me since their show. The vibes of the evening easily felt like summer leaving me longing for a beach day and some warm weather. Another element I really appreciated about this concert as a whole was it was probably one of the most unplugged I’ve been to in years. In a world where we constantly chase the gratification of social media praises and capturing memories through empty screens, I didn’t see a single person in the venue glued to their screen. Instead, everyone was there to experience the moment together in real time. It takes an engaging atmosphere and music to do that. This show was only the second of their winter East Coast tour to promote their latest EP “Ooooo,” and they have also announced dates for their summer tour beginning in June. I would hands down attend another Easy Honey performance in the future. They’re definitely a band to keep on your radar.

A LEAGUE OF VIBRANT ENERGIES:

BREAKING THE GLASS CEILING ONE KISMET TRACK AT A TIME Words & photos by Amiyah Golden

51

A League of Vibrant Energies (more commonly known as “L.O.V.E Culture”) is a fitting acronym for a local artist collective of five brilliant individuals who have come together to produce music laced with intention and vigor — EASYin2D, Flash the Samurai, DJ Larry Love, Spirit XIII, Ch́ e, and Rob Mari.

Flash the Samurai

“1827 N Pearl” was the project by L.O.V.E. Culture that I streamed as soon as I left James Weldon Johnson Park’s Hip Hop Festival a couple years back. I whipped out my Spotify (because that’s the only acceptable streaming platform) and added every song to my playlist — each one exceeding my expectations. L.O.V.E. Culture’s “1827 N Pearl” record allowed me to immerse myself in storytelling that paid homage to this city we all cherish and call home. It led to me becoming a fan and wanting to see them win. With one of my treasured favorites off the album being, “8th Street Interlude,” it further solidified the artistry that lived within L.O.V.E. Culture. That initial performance was followed up with me asking my fellow aficionados if they had heard of this group. If I was met with a “no,” I would direct them to get acquainted (like, immediately). But more often than not I was met with a “yes!” and that feeling of elation would turn into perplexity … because why would no one put me onto the gem that is L.O.V.E. Culture?! It’s all good, though. I unearthed them when I needed it most. Getting to sit down and chat with L.O.V.E. Culture was an experience that I will always value. With each member holding true to the make-up of their name — a league of vibrant energies — it confirmed that it was a title meant just for them.

@flashthesamurai

With the dexterity they hold and the goals they’ve accomplished thus far, it could’ve been so easy for them to act impudent, but I felt right at home (I honestly felt like an honorary seventh member.) The respect they have for others and each other was refreshing: It wasn’t forced nor phony but pure, which is

Rob Mari

just another basis as to why they mesh so well. With each member having their own personal musical escapades as independent artists, the existence of L.O.V.E. Culture was not purposefully in the cards for them (but it didn’t matter because fate was the one driving this ship.) With an artist showcase, No Filter, featuring Ch́ e, EASYin2D, Flash the Samurai, Spirit XII and Rob Mari – it was the first time that they all were able to meet in one setting. The show highlighted the unparalleled talents that make each artist tick and was met with much support — not only just from the crowd — but from each other as well. One by one, after each set, they respectively stood in the front of the stage to show support for their fellow artists. No feelings of envy or insecurity were in attendance that night, just admiration and genuine champion for each other’s craft; further confirming the unwavering authenticity they all possess. A natural synergy was born that same night with collaborations being formed as a result. As Mari began to work on his own album, he had the desire to feature the lot — with each artist asked to bring their own presence to a song. What started off as individual features transformed into a hive mind. And what started off as scheduled days in the studio turned into a place of secondary residence. Several months later the project was completed and another showcase awaited — this time the powerhouses combined forces to produce a memorable performance.

DJ Larry Love

Despite them still not being an official collective at the time, they were met with so much love and espousal. “Before I would see artists perform and then dip,” said Ch́ e. “I wasn’t used to seeing that support. I realized that is what I was missing and didn’t see when performing in other cities that I was traveling to.” This comradery between performers wasn’t necessarily always present. A “crabs-in-a-bucket” mentality was often associated with the artists in Jacksonville — even though that didn’t represent the thinking behind most. “We’re flipping that narrative,” echoed Mari. “You can get yours in this city.” I can truly say that the collective wants to see other Jacksonville artists win. With the music industry being so full of competition, this attitude lacks on many stages and studios but, L.O.V.E. is watering an ecosystem that allows for the development and expansion of the arts in this city. “We want other artists to be a part of what we have. We vouch for others and how artists should be paid. We vouch for the value of our art and Black art in Jacksonville.” Six nods followed behind this statement, indicating they were all in agreement when it comes to curating a legacy — not only just for themselves — but also attributing to the progression in the realm of — and not only just music

@iamdjlarrylove Easyin2D

— but also community, infrastructure and legacy. “We’re determined to show the world how diverse and complex Jacksonville’s identity is,” said Ch́ e. “It often gets pigeon-holed by bad press, violence …” “And the Jags losing!” Flash chimed in. “And the Jags losing! But the people here are well aware of what we’re working against, but we believe in the evolution of what this city can be,” Ché continued. This spirit of drive and aspiration is what will make this group soar to do amazing things for our city. So many people often complain about the “lack thereof” but don’t stop to see the beautiful people, experiences and capacities that occupy the spaces around us. “You can be the solution to the problem,” said Flash. “If you want to change something, do the necessary work!” As a group of individuals that can produce music radiating chemistry that’s so organic and results in the bearing of fruits that cannot go rotten, it gives me hope for the future of music. With a sound that’s ever-changing, L.O.V.E. Culture cannot be contained to the definitive realm of hip-hop and rap. I think we all agreed that ‘neo-hop’ would be a better descriptor for their sound but, even then I don’t think it captures the exploration and experimentation they carry out – although they do attribute influence to hip-hop groups such as The Fugees and Wu-tang Clan. “I would say our sound is upbeat,” Ch́ e affirmed. “But also intentional, confi-

@easyin2d

dent and sp---”

53

“Spirit led!” a sentiment they all resounded together, followed by an exchange of soft laughter. A moment that felt like a wash of con-

Che

firmation. Prayers and their zeal keep this collective in motion as well (along with their wicked skillsets, of course) as they continue to shoot to eminence with spiritual protection and guidance. Humble yet self-assured, hungry and non-complacent is the best summary I can give you to describe this group of individuals. With future plans to continue to push the envelope when it comes to their sound and their desire to win a Grammy, I foresee all of these goals — and more coming to fruition in no time. It’s always a pleasure to pick the brains of creatives who genuinely love what they do because beyond the promise of fame and wealth, there is the highest esteem of producing music that leaves a legacy, not only for themselves but for the generations that follow. Their music is made with so much intention that it is like a big “pot of gumbo: — a mix of everyone bringing their own components to create the most delectable sound. Some days it’s gumbo with rice, others it’s gumbo with shrimp, and sometimes it’s the whole damn kitchen sink. These musical chefs know when to add and subtract, and that’s the beauty of collaboration with this particular group. “We create with each other in mind. Sometimes it requires you to be selfless at times. Would the song benefit from you being on it or allowing someone else to take the lead?” A true example of what it means to aid in artistry that is considerate

@allofche

and conscious. Again, I have to emphasize on the vibrancy, that is L.O.V.E. Culture.

SpiritXIII

Their latest EP, “Vol. 3,” is out now on various streaming platforms. You (yes, you reader) need to pull out your phone, mp3 player, cassette tape and/or radio and give this dynamic ensemble a listen. You won’t be let down, I can confidently promise you that.

VALENTINE’S DAY INSPIRED BEVS Words by Briana Pereira

Valentine’s Day can look different for everyone, whether you’re Insta-official, in a situationship that seems to get messier by the day (relatable), or enjoying that single freedom – having a bev in hand can make the day more enjoyable (or tolerable) for everyone. So whether you’re toasting to love this Valentine’s Day, have a hot date, spending it with the girls, or chugging away some sorrows, here’s a list of 12 fun, love-themed cocktails – or mocktails – for you to enjoy this February 14th.

Most of these drinks (with a few exceptions) can be easily enjoyed without the liquor and taste just as delicious, if not better than they would when spiked. Some tips for anyone who isn’t a drinker: •

A great filler for liquor in drinks is replacing it with an equal ratio of soda water or lemon-lime soda, non-alcoholic sparkling wine/ cider, depending on the drink and how much of a sweet tooth you have.

Another alternative especially if you want the flavor of the alcohol without the buzz is to try out some Zero Proof options with your cocktail curations, Ritual is my personal favorite brand!

From everyone here at Folio, happy Valentine’s Day and happy sippin’! ;)

THE COUPLE’S GUIDE TO VALENTINE’S DAY Words by Mallory Pace

Valentine’s Day — you love it or you hate it. If you happen to love this holiday, you’re most likely in a committed relationship and looking forward to showering your significant other with kisses and chocolate. Or perhaps you are single but still love to celebrate love for what it is. Love is a strange thing: It’s found in strange places, you feel it differently with each person in your life, and it can make you do crazy things. It’s a scary, freeing and beautiful feeling and if there’s one thing that each person on the planet has in common — everyone wants to be loved. Valentine’s Day is the holiday dedicated to celebrating that indescribable feeling. But don’t let capitalism get in the way of what it’s really about. Certainly it has become synonymous with flowers, chocolates and heart-shaped everything, but that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It might seem excessive or somewhat pointless to some, (you’re projecting, babe), but I find it to be a wholesome holiday where we get to show those we love a little extra kindness and attention. You don’t have to make a reservation at some too-fancy, overpriced restaurant or book a romantic, unforgettable getaway — there are so many (in my opinion, better) ways to show someone you love them without extravagant gestures. Most of the time, people just want to know they are heard and appreciated in ways that are unique to them. Side-tracked rant: I whole-heartedly believe you should ask your significant other to be your Valentine. If you know your partner cares about it more than you do, ask them. Even if you know they don’t care about it, a simple ask and small gesture will be a pleasant surprise. Don’t just assume that because you’re dating or married, it’s an unspoken rule, because it’s not. Again, everyone wants to be loved and heard, so give it a try.

THE HUNT: FINDING THE BEST TIRAMISU IN TOWN

4/5

AMARETTI DESSERTS She’s thick, she’s creamy, she’s CoverGirl. Settled on the corner of Baymeadows and Old Saint Augustine Road, this family-owned shop has anything bakery item you could possibly want. Each baked good is made from scratch every morning with the finest natural ingredients, no preservatives, and a double spoonful of love. We stumbled upon Amaretti in our personal search to find a decent tiramisu last year and were far from disappointed. She’s thick, she’s creamy, she’s moist and busting at the seams with flavor. One thing that we find incredibly important for a good tiramisu is, of course, the coffee-soaked ladyfingers. And Amaretti knows how to soak ’em. The mascarpone cream is whipped to perfection leaving us wanting more after every bite. The consistency is exactly what it needs to be to combat the bitter espresso taste, though if you’re looking for a traditional tiramisu, this one is on the sweeter side (and there is nothing wrong with that).

2/5

TOSCANA LITTLE ITALY Situated on Hendricks Avenue, this family-owned and operated Italian restaurant has been a staple in the Jacksonville Italian dining scene for approximately 10 years. Boasting a diverse menu designed to satisfy any palate and pizza that is proudly promoted as rivaling the quality of New York’s renowned pizza, it comes as no surprise this establishment has stood the test of time. Tables are strategically placed throughout the medium-sized space, providing ample seating for customers, albeit with limited walking space. With the apparent hustle and bustle of the evening, surely nothing could go wrong, right? Wrong. Without being too pessimistic, this was the worst tiramisu we’ve ever had… and that is being generous. The ladyfingers were bone dry and the mascarpone cream tasted like it spoiled last week. There was hardly any coffee/espresso flavor and the cocoa topping looked like molded cheese – how? We don’t know. We each took one bite and threw it in the trash. Maybe we got an old slice or a bad batch. So, if you are willing to test it out yourself, let us know your experience. We won’t be back for their desserts: We will stick to the pizza. Author’s note [Ambar]: I should’ve known this was gonna be a bad experience when someone asked me if I was a dog walker while waiting for the tiramisu.

ATMOSPHERE: 3/5 FLAVOR: 5/5 OVERALL: 4/5 Perfect for someone who wants to dabble into espresso-flavored desserts without being overpowered by it.

ATMOSPHERE: 3/5 FLAVOR: 1/5 OVERALL: 2/5 Perfect for people who prefer savory meals over sweet desserts.

5/5

PRIMI PIATTI

Where does one go for tiramisu? An Italian restaurant, yes. But not just any Italian restaurant. To get the best tiramisu, one has to go to the most unassuming, hole-in-the-wall joint. One has to go to Primi Piatti located in Riverside. Allow us to paint the scene: crisp, white flowing linen adorned the scarce tables with candles casting a soft glow, while tapered candles illuminated the space. Canvases portraying scenes from what we could only assume is Northern Italy adorned the walls, and a kind old man warmly welcomed us the moment we stepped inside. This family-owned Northern Italian cuisine restaurant exuded a comforting atmosphere, reminiscent of a cherished home. Now, for the main reason of the visit. Tiramisu. When we tell you that as soon as we took the first bite we were drooling, we mean it. There was simply no contest. This tiramisu was, without a doubt, the best of the bunch. Each bite packed a punch that left us craving for more, even after we finished the entire thing. The mascarpone cream did not overpower the espresso taste and the coffee-soaked ladyfingers added the perfect balance. Not to mention the coffee and cocoa shavings on top… we are still drooling over it. We thought it would be more difficult to decide on a winner, but like we said, there really was no contest.

ATMOSPHERE: 5/5 FLAVOR: 5/5 OVERALL: 5/5 Perfect for people who have taste buds.

SEEING ST. AUGUSTINE,

ONE BAR AT A TIME Words by Briana Pereira Who doesn’t love a good bar crawl? Especially in a city where there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re a fan of the breweries or love a fancy cocktail, St. Augustine has it all. For my crawl I stuck to the historic district and tried to hit some of the spots that caught my eye, but there are plenty of others that didn’t make it on my list this visit that will be mentioned below. I tried to make my visit to the city as easy as possible by following what one may call a rectangular “full circle”. If you decide to do this crawl or any version of a bar crawl, please make sure you have a DD or use a ride-share system. Now for the fun stuff!

PARKING: If you decide to have a DD, the best option to find parking without a hassle is to park in their visitor garage located at 1 Cordova Street, which is $20 per vehicle. This spot has easy access to the main strip of shops in the historic area, St. George Street. ROUTE BREAKDOWN: Head away from the visitor center on St. George Street hit some of the main spots, taking a slight detour off of St. George Street onto Bridge St. From there, head back to St. George Street and make your way back up towards Cathedral Place and turn right. Make sure to keep left onto Anderson Cir., then make a left onto Avenida Menendez, following it down to Cuna St. where you’ll end your crawl… hopefully still standing. Alright let’s get to drinking!

STOP 1 STOP 2 Before you get ahead of yourself you’ll want to grab something quick and easy to snack on to set yourself up for a successful evening of drinking at A1A Burrito Works. Here you’ll find a selection of local and domestic bottled beers and some seltzer options as well as some FIRE made to order Mexican options - so prepare to have a full and happy stomach.

Starting things off fun, you’ll head to Boat Drinks found early on St. George Street. They are known for offering a tropical escape in a glass with balanced and frosty cocktails. Their drinks are perfectly complemented by the kitchen and raw bar featuring fresh, thoughtfully sourced seafood and plant-based options inspired by travels throughout the Caribbean, Florida, and the Gulf Coast.

STOP 3

STOP 4

Right next door to A1A Burrito Works we’ll hit our next spot, St. George Tavern. Here you’ll find a full service bar that gives off the vibes of an early 2000’s movie hometown dive bar.

STOP 5 Across the street from these spots you’ll find a St. Augustine staple and gastropub known for their unique interior, Prohibition Kitchen. If you’re going during the evening or a weekend in general, I would recommend making a reservation for them because they fill up fast! They have the perfect balance of beer on tap available and their own cocktail menu, sure to please all audiences.

STOP 6

You’ll take a quick break on your walk down St. George Street as you make your way to Bridge St. for these next two spots. Right at the corner you’ll come across The Well Bar where you’ll find a cozy atmosphere with classic cocktails and modern, herb-infused elixirs. And for those interested, they also offer a mixology program, which offers the opportunity to learn the finer points of mixing a perfect

breweries, Dog Rose Brewing Co. Here you will find handcrafted ales and lagers that are brewed with style and tradition in mind. For my non-beer drinkers at this stop, Dog Rose also offers shuffleboard and cricket on their dart boards.

STOP 7

STOP 8

Making your way back to St. George Street and onto Cathedral Place you’ll hit Ancient City Brewing. The brewery is known for its down-to-earth atmosphere, which includes a tasting room that offers pints and beer flights of its own brand of craft brews.

STOP 9 For your next stop you will look right across the street from Ancient City Brewing and find A1A Ale Works Restaurant & Taproom. They are known for being a seaside brewery offering seasonal beers. They also have a happy hour and live performances.

STOP 10

Making your way towards Anderson Cir. you’ll pass Trade Winds Lounge on Charlotte St. Trade Winds is a quirky, tropical-themed space that offers regular live music, brews & cocktails. Now onto Anderson Cir., making your way to Avenida Menendez you will find Casa Reina Taqueria and Tequila. Casa Reina is a Mexican, Latin American and Florida Coastal Cuisine influenced restaurant with a vast selection of cocktail choices, even offering tequila

flights.

STOP 11

STOP 12

As you turn onto Avenida Menendez you will find Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille, a city hot spot overlooking the water, serving New Orleans inspired cuisine and specialty cocktails.

STOP 13

The Tini Martini Bar is a St. Augustine fan favorite. The decorations and vibes of this spot are everything! The line tells you everything you need to know about this spot with nearly 30 martini options and other cocktails available to try. If there’s one spot you’re going to hit on your crawl make sure it’s here.

STOP 14

Meehan’s Irish Pub is another fan favorite along these strips of bars with three restaurants all in one spot! The pub offers a warm and welcoming environment for locals and visitors to enjoy traditional Irish pub experiences with additional options at Johnny’s Oyster Bar and a Caribbean-style menu in the Island Cafe & Tropical Bar.

River and Fort is a restaurant and rooftop lounge offering beer, wine, and craft cocktails. With a perfect view of the Bayfront, it’s a great place to take in some of St. Augustine’s historic sights.

73

STOP 15

HOPEFULLY YOU’RE STILL WITH ME AFTER ALL THAT. IF ANY OF THESE PLACES DON’T FIT YOUR VIBE, THERE ARE A TON OF OPTIONS THAT I DIDN’T HIT ON MY VISIT TO THE CITY. BELOW, I TRIED TO NAME SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR SPOTS.

From Avenida Menendez you will make your way to Cuna St. where you will come across the White Lion Bar & Grill. Built in 1973, the White Lion is an old school pub offering music & grub with pool tables & darts.

BONUS SPOTS!!!

STOP 16

BREWERIES: If beers are your thing, here’s some more breweries you can hit, they just aren’t in direct walking distance for a ‘crawl’ necessarily! • •

Bog Brewing Company Old Coast Ales

COCKTAILS, MOCKTAILS & EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN:

Our FINAL stop! Isabela’s Bar Cuba, also located on Cuna St. is a family-owned cigar lounge found in a traditional home with a walkin humidor, bottled beers, wine & port.

READ IT AND WEEP Words by Kelila Ritchie In honor of Black History month and Valentine’s Day coinciding with one another, I bring you an article surrounding black love and all it could be. According to an article by TheRoot.com, black love is described as “the ideal of unity and togetherness.” It’s something magical. Yet, almost always, the issue lies in the representation of black love and all it has to offer in its glory. We are taught that experiencing a form of tough love and being a “ride or die” are the only ways we will ever experience love that is displayed in the movies. The common misconception is that you have to suffer, prove your worth & only then will you be worthy enough to experience love. Newsflash buddy, love doesn’t have to be traumatic. As a matter of fact, to love and to be loved is the best feeling in the world when it is done right. There are statistics and odds stacked against black relationships, dooming them before they even begin. As said in the Washington Post article 2019 marked 400 years of ‘forbidden black love’ in America, “The fracturing of black love and marriage began during the Middle Passage, when women such as Hagar Blackmore recalled being ‘stolen away from her husband and the infant that nursed on her breast.’ In 1669, Blackmore described the unique predicament of marital dissolution that most African women captives experienced before ever setting foot on American soil.” This was a common theme during the slavery era; Couples being ripped away from each other, families being torn apart for no other reason than unjust labor. With no idea when they would see each other again…if they ever would. The impact of slavery and America’s “war on black love” continues to affect today’s generation. Black people are scared to love freely, to experience the type of love that swallows you whole. To choose love consistently. (Yes, I obviously have been called a hopeless romantic but is it really hopeless? No.) But whatever fine, don’t wanna hear it from me? Here’s what some of my personal favorite black couples have to say about being Black and in love. These are interviews that will restore your faith in love.

Q & A

76 Folio Weekly

What does love look like when you are together?

Julian and Kei: “Love is just patience and kindness. You are careful with one another’s feelings, you’re cognizant of how your actions affect your partner.”

What role does shared values and goals play in the foundation of your love/relationship?

Julian and Kei: “I’m a bit more bull-ish when it comes to leading and goals and our relationship; because Kei is very feminine and very “going with the vibe” it works for me because I am not a go with the vibe type of person. So that helps with the dynamic of the balance of our relationship. But I think once you start peeling back that layer, you’ll find that you have two people who although are different as far as her having brothers and sisters and me being the only child, we’re very much family oriented. We love our families, we love our friends and it’s not just wordplay. We really live it and I think that is us at our core. It’s one of the things I love about Kei. So, that helps a lot in how we show up for each other since we consider each other parts of our friendships and family.”

Shonnie and Corey: “Don’t jump to conclusions, communicate and always

What advice would you give younger black couples/singles about relationships?

express how you feel. Vocalize the things that you want and expect. Don’t be afraid to say what you want. Voice exactly what you want, how you want it and when. That’s key. It’s also the only way you will get the maximum out of your partner. You will be surprised at the response or the result you will get just by being totally transparent about whatever is on your mind.”

Can you describe a moment when you realized you were in love with your partner?

Shonnie and Corey: “I knew I was in love when we were together like all day, for a few days and I was still missing you whenever I was not with you. I’ve never had that with anybody where I just really enjoyed and did not mind being in their presence, or them being in my presence all the time.”

How do you keep the romance alive in your relationship over time? Ilyana and Tiffany: “Definitely communicating. Communicate

In what ways do you express gratitude and appreciation to each other regularly?

your happy days, your bad days. It is important to communicate especially in your relationships because you need to let your partner know what the f*** is going on in your head. You choose to live this life with this partner, you’re choosing to bond on a more intimate level than you are with other people. You know? Let me in. That’s what keeps the romance alive, keeps the heart thumping, keeps you on your toes. Go on date nights, continue dating each other. Do spontaneous stuff. Actively listen to your partner. Never think that you know your partner all the way. Love is ever changing. People are so multifaceted and love is so complex. People are even more complex.”

Joshua and Brianna: “We’re very vocal with each other. Literally just letting her know how much she means to me and showing it. Plus, taking what she says to me and actually applying it. It isn’t in one ear, out of the other. Picking up what she’s putting down. I am present through our actions and we respect each other’s boundaries. It’s also showing up with the intention of being with each other. There is always the “thank you’s” and the “I love you’s. Just really being genuine about how we talk to each other.”

Can you share a piece of advice that has helped shape your understanding of love and partnership?

Josh and Brianna: “When you know, you know. Nothing feels like a chore. Nothing feels like an obligation, regardless of what it is. You feel great, just because you’re doing it for that person. It’s innate, it’s instinct almost, you just feel it. Chase that feeling. Just go with your gut. But also find your own definition of love, have a good understanding of what love means to you.”
