FESTIVAL NOTES • The first recorded St. Patrick Day celebration in the world was in the year 1600, in St. Augustine, America’s Oldest Celtic City, and the first St. Patrick Day Parade was here in 1601. Both are documented in Spain’s General Archive of the Indies by Dr. Michael Francis in Decebmer 2017. That means we’re celebrating the 419th anniversary this year! For info, visit www.irishcentral.com/roots/oldest-st-patricksday-parade-us-city-new-york-boston • Nine of the top Celtic bands in the world are performing at the festival this year. In fact, we were voted Best Concert or Event in Jacksonville and Best Festival in St. Augustine in 2016 & 2017. We’ve become known internationally as the finest Celtic music festival in the United States. • The St. Augustine Highland Games has grown to one of the largest in Florida with more than 85 athletes competing. It’s the heritage part of the Celtic Music Festival, not to mention a unique sports event.

PARADE OPENS THE FESTIVAL

SATURDAY MARCH 10 10 AM

St. Paddy’s Parade T

his St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebrates the 419th year of St. Augustine’s Celtic heritage and the Emerald Isle’s most revered saint. One of the three largest parades in the city, more than 1,000 participants and thousands of spectators, lads and lasses converge upon the Ancient City each year. The parade follows a route throughout downtown and ends at Francis Field just as the Celtic Music & Heritage Festival begins. FUN FACT: The wearin’ o’ the green was seen as a form of rebellion and was outlawed in 18th Century England. Wearing of shamrocks was a crime punishable by hanging. PARADE SPONSORS
