This is a very proud moment for the history of St Augustine and Jacksonville for the removal of monuments and school names that celebrated and honored the confederacy. Of course this was the the easy part with the removal of this strange fruit. Now the conversation and education of our citizens turns to Andrew Jackson and Duval. As we educate everyone who these people were we will also shine a light on the names on our St John’s river bridges that today all honor life long white supremacy men. Let us continue to declare to the world we have learned from our history and we are not a city that honors historical bad people. New year, new you, right? It is time to hunker down and start focusing on your

Happy January, Libra. This month brings a flurry of party invitations and a

now. The new moon in Capricorn in early January brings a new wave of focus

until the reality hits that everything comes with a price. Now, you might be

and determination. Be on the lookout for that new promotion.

TAURUS

It seems Cupid has set his sights on you, Taurus — or should we say, his arrow has found its mark. This month is dedicated to fortifying your relationships, be it friendships or something more. Every relationship demands attention and nurturing, so make it a point to express your affection to those near and dear to you. If you’re feeling spontaneous, consider opening up to your crush about your true feelings.

GEMINI

wondering, what’s that price? Brace yourself — it involves facing your fears and addressing any toxic habits. Woo!

SCORPIO

When your planetary ruler, Mars, entered Capricorn on Jan. 4 your social battery hit full charge. A new wave of energy will fill you with the urge to spark up conversations with friendly strangers and neighbors. Be mindful of how you use this new energy; you don’t want to hit empty too soon.

CANCER

Grab my hand, Cancer, and inhale deeply. Do you sense that the heavy burden on your chest has lifted? That’s because Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius has finally bid its farewell. All those petty conversations and misunderstandings are now officially in the past, allowing you to confidently embark on this new year with a clean slate.

LEO

Your roster seems a bit long, no? It is time to start focusing on one relationship — which may be hard for you. You are a proud sign, and that is usually a good thing. But sometimes this trait can cause you to take advantage of those around you.

CAPRICORN

Mercury is no longer in retrograde, thank the stars. Your body and mind are finally starting to align and things are set to go your way this month. Here’s to fewer travel delays, typos and miscommunications.

AQUARIUS

Happy solar return, Aquarius! As per tradition, things are about to take a quirky turn, and strangely enough, that’s when you’re at your best. In the spirit of celebrating yourself this month, consider giving yourself a well-deserved

You will be quite the busy bee this January, Pisces. Hardly a time for logical thinking, just put your brain on autopilot and go, go, go. Work life and personal life will try to intermingle but remember — we don’t mix business with pleasure. Your work crush is simply a work crush, nothing more.

THE VOLSTEAD Shrouded away on Adams Street, hidden under the guise of an old-timey barber shop is the moody speakeasy Volstead. Volstead is the cream of the crop when it comes to speakeasies in Jacksonville, and consistently stays true to the tradition of dark lighting and misguided entrances. Once you uncover this hidden gem, the allure becomes irresistible — perhaps due to its impeccably crafted cocktails that never disappoint, or simply because it serves as the ideal refuge from the monotony of everyday life.

WACKO’S GENTLEMEN’S CLUB

It’s hardly shocking that our locally cherished Wacko’s clinched the top spot for Best Strip Club. I mean, where else can you find a winning combo of exotic dancers and the town’s most mouthwatering cheeseburger? Wacko’s has been a fixture in the Jacksonville nightlife scene for a solid three decades.

JACKSONVILLE TACO AND TEQUILA FESTIVAL Pizza and beer. Milk and cookies. Somethings just go together, and according to the readers of “Folio,” tacos and tequila are a can’t-miss. The massive event, held at whatever Metro Park is called these days, featured tacos and Mexican street fare from more than 40 food purveyors, immersive entertainment, waterfront arts market, football tailgate villages, live muralists, games and live performances from Iration, Lupe Fiasco, Big Boi and Gym Class Heroes. And, of course, lots and lots of tequila.

NAKAMA ANIME BAR Nakama Anime Bar is an anime-themed bar in Orange Park, offering karaoke by day and transforming into an adult bar and lounge at night. The atmosphere is inspired by the streets of Tokyo, bringing together the community of the anime world and those with a shared passion for traditional Japanese karaoke. In addition to having the largest selection of sake in Northeast Florida, Nakama Anime Bar offers specialty cocktails, snack items, appetizers, merchandise and more. Private karaoke and gaming rooms are available for reservations, offering an extensive song list and various Nintendo and PlayStation games.

Located on Edgewood Ave, this not so average hair salon has people coming back for more, like an addiction they just can’t resist. While the number of winning votes is undoubtedly related to the quality of their work, something tells us their all-inclusive gender-neutral pricing, honest work ethic, and no add-on or upcharges is what put this hair salon at the top, not to mention the salon is part of the Dresscode project and annually contributes to SMART Recovery. Not only will you leave Beauty Junkie looking good with a rockin’ haircut but also feeling good about supporting a socially responsible local business.

PINK MOJO Located in the heart of Mandarin, this salon would definitely be Barbie approved. Pink Mojo not only caters to one’s mani-pedi needs but also their self-care journey. And did we mention their pink theme? Pink Mojo nail artists offer a full range of manicure services and are known for their customized nail art. As for Ken, he’d definitely appreciate the mojo. As the “Best of Jax” favorite in the category, it’s safe to say Pink Mojo nailed it.

stead of using the snub to fuel their anger, and prove their merit by bringing it to the Bulldogs, they reduced their entire season to a joke with chaos already brewing for their off-season. Personally, as a Gator fan, watching our two greatest rivals endure that debacle was really the only joy I got from college football this year, and let’s not speak of it again until [checks notes] Aug. 24. Somehow that multifarious meta shit-show was eclipsed in relative infamy just five days later by the Lady Tigers of Grambling State University, an iconic HBCU founded in Louisiana in 1901. A Jan. 2 game against the College of Biblical Studies, established in Houston in 1976, was basically over as soon as it started. GSU led by 46 to 4 after the first quarter, and they fought hard to maintain that lead, which they did. The final score? 159 to 18, aka the greatest blowout in NCAA history. Only four of CBS’ 12 “Ambassadors” scored, taking 43 shots in total but hitting just eight. Meanwhile, every single GSU player scored multiple times with two scoring more points solo than their opponents did combined. You never want to see anyone get embarrassed like that, but at least they didn’t quit. Expect for this NCAA women’s basketball season to feature here again, especially in March, because NIL=shenanigans! Pivoting away from sports, let’s talk about insects — namely, cicadas, with whom we Floridians are about to get very familiar.
