Today whenever we need to research something we go directly to the internet. Years ago, and not really that long ago, people had to use books and printed materials. Sometimes I find myself looking at those old books and catalogs, and its kinda fun.

FOHBC News FOHBC Hall of Famer Dr. Burt Spiller dies

Most of all, Burton enjoyed the friendships that lasted a lifetime.

A true person; a true friend.

Burton: “You did good!”

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Dr. Burton Spiller, D.D.S., of Rochester, passed away on March 13, 2019 at age 87.

There was a chill in the air as the procession walked to the grave site. Taps played, the flag folded and was passed to one of Dr. Spiller’s best friends. “You did good,” Burt would often say. And Dr. Burton Spiller really “did good!”

Although frail, Burton’s death was unexpected and he died peacefully in his sleep.

“Call this dentist!” “There’s a dentist in Rochester, you want bottles, call this dentist!” That’s what I would hear when I went to various antique shops around Rochester about 1965 looking for bottles. I even had that response when I made a trip into northern New England! His “network” was second to none. My call led to a friendship lasting more than 50 years.

Burton always assisted any person in their endeavors. In the early years of collecting, he promoted the Antique Bottle Collectors of California, predecessor to the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors, as well as the Empire State Bottle Collectors Association of Syracuse, N.Y., and The Antique Trader.

Burt was a major reason that the Genessee Valley Bottle Collectors Association was formed in 1969 and flourishes to this day.

Dr. Burton Spiller is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Spiller of Clay St, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Spiller.

Burton was born in Le Roy where he attended school, graduating as Valedictorian of his class; graduated from Cornell as a pre dental student; attended school of dentistry at U. of Buffalo. Since graduation he has attended extra courses at Columbia, Stanford and Tufts. He decided to specialize in Orthodontistry, and has his office in Henrietta. He enlisted in the armed forces and spent two years as a Captain in the Dental Corps of the U.S. Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base.

Urged by friends, he accompanied them to a “Flea Market” where he purchased his first bottle for $4.50 which turned out to be a Halls Bitters bottle. This was the beginning of an interesting and educational hobby, which he calls “bottlitis” – “a fun disease, and who wants to be cured?”

Dr. Spiller has spoken in many places and has won many prizes and a tremendous reputation for his most knowledgeable presentation on the subject. He is a columnist for the magazine “THE WESTERN COLLECTOR” contributing many articles in a sec-

Burt authored many articles and supported many authors, but never assumed a leadership role. He would not be a chairman or president, but he and his resources would always be there, just behind the scenes to lend guidance and support.

In 1998, the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors honored Burt by inducting him into the Hall of Fame for his tireless efforts to promote the bottle collecting hobby.

In a surprise to many, in May of 2000 Burt sold his beloved bottle collection, but over the next 19 years, he enjoyed his superb advertising and souvenir china collections.

By Tom Kanalley The Applied Lip Newsletter Editor Finger Lakes Bottle Collectors Association Dr. Burton Spiller, DDS, 87, and a member of the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors, passed away on March 13, 2019.

He was a prominent orthodontist in Rochester, N.Y. for nearly 30 years. He was an avid collector of early American bottles, historical flasks and antique American advertising. His collection was known to collectors throughout the country and had been photographed and written about in various publications. He was well known for his expert knowledge on the subject of bottles and advertising and revered by many. In the late 1980s, he and his collection were featured on a segment of “Good Morning, America.”

Burt Spiller was probably the Finger Lakes Bottle Collectors Association’s first honorary member. In the early years of the hobby, he would always present a bottle program in Ithaca, if not two every year. He wore these custom-made antique bottle shirts that were really wild. He had a flair for the dramatic and even wrote and opened a play in Rochester.

I remember that Burt would come through Courtland, N.Y., every three weeks of so and buy bottles. It was hard for others to buy a good bottle because everyone was always saving it for the DOCTOR from Rochester. “Do you still have that old bottle I wanted?” a dealer would be asked. “I’m saving it for the Doctor from Rochester.”

Brandon DeWolfe Hostetters were originally Swiss Dear Ferdinand Meyer V, I talked to Richard Siri last week here in Santa Rosa. What are the odds that one of the preeminent Hostetter specialists would live in the same town I’ve lived in my whole life? I think that falls into the category of “small world.” I told him my story and he suggested I send this to you.

Now, I wonder how other people get started with the bottle collecting bug? Where does the spark come from? Ancestry research brought me to Hostetter bottles. I have been tracing my ancestry and only just recently tripped across the fact that I am a descendant of the Hostetter Bitters bottle family. Our family history had been only stories passed down. We’ve heard the family names for years: Roux, Irwin, Hostetter, Donovan and so on.

I found your article on the internet, posted October 30 2018 in the Peachridge Glass resources, “Jacob & David Hostetter – Dr. J. Hostetter’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters”. I was spellbound with all the information about MY family members. What a treasure.

I’m thrilled to find they are so well known. I have subsequently discovered the clockmaker Hostetter and the congressman Hostetter. One Hostetter was a Tory loyalist to the king of England before the War for Independence and another fought in the Revolution. We’ve got history in our family to say the least.

I have some background information I would like to share with you regarding the family lineage. I don’t believe the Hostetter family is entirely of Dutch extraction. It is true they settled in York County, Pennsylvania after arriving in America in 1749.

However, this Hostetter family originally came from Switzerland.

I have traced my Hostetter family, including Dr. Jacob and his son David, back 4 generations (see the list below) that were born in Switzerland prior to arriving in America in 1749.

Ulrich Hostetter, Dr. Jacob’s grandfather, arrived in in Philadelphia 1749 on the Ship Phoenix. I can see how the family may

have been thought to be Dutch for a couple reasons: 1. Their point of origin may have been mistaken for their homeland. The Ship Phoenix first departed Europe from Rotterdam, Netherlands. However the passengers were not all Dutch.

2. Or possibly because the Hostetters settled in York County, Pennsylvania, an area known for Pennsylvania Dutch 3. Or more likely because the generations following arrival married Dutch descendants living in Pennsylvania, Jacob Sr married Catherine Zimmerman, both born in Pennsylvania It is entirely possible the Swiss Hostetter family line came to America, married into Pennsylvania Dutch and so we do have Dutch background, also.

Wolford Z Whiskey barrel Hi Ferdinand, Wondering if you have ever seen a King Edward Reserve barrel. Looks like a Wolford Z Whiskey barrel and also a Chaplin Gore Sour Mash 1867 barrel. The bottom has no embossing like the other 2 barrels have.

It also has a applied top. I attached a few photos of my barrel. Its the same barrel that is listed in the DC Auction Price List. Which a got from a later auction house. Just wondering how rare it is. I have never seen an other one and posted it on facebook with the same results.

A

ntique bottles have been important parts of the history of Augusta, Georgia because many of the brewers, distillers, patent medicine men, pharmacists and spring water distributors played key roles in the city’s development and growth.

That they became prominent is mostly because of the promotion of their products through advertisements in The Augusta Chronicle, the South’s Oldest Newspaper, established in 1785.

Most of those products were housed in glass bottles, most of which were blown into molds containing the names of the contents, their developers and, most importantly, Augusta, Ga. Most of the bottles were blown in glass factories in the Northeast, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England.

Among advertisements in the 18th and early 19th century editions of the newspaper (usually on the front page) were offers of Madeira and other imported wines and patent medicines from New York and elsewhere claiming to cure what ails you and then some.

Among the first locally produced patent medicines was Georgia Sarsaparilla, sold in wholesale amounts in 10-1/2-inch tall, light aquamarine bottles. It is embossed GEORGIA SARSAPARILLA on the front panel with Dr. J(ohn) Dennis and Augusta, Ga., embossed on the side panels. The back panel was designed to hold a paper label. None of the latter are known to exist.

The concoction dates to the mid 1840s, but many of Dennis’s medicines were put up in much smaller bottles, including his “Stimulating, or Hot Bitters” ($1 a bottle), Southern Painkiller

or Anti-Spasmodic Tincture” (25 cents a bottle), “Indian Bitters” ($1 a bottle) or “Compound Dogwood Bitters, A Substitute for Quinine, for Fevers, Dyspepsia and General Debility.” No bottles containing those names embossed in the glass have been discovered so it is likely descriptive paper labels were affixed to the containers.

Perhaps an even more prominent pharmacist was Dr. Edward Barry (1815-1895), one of the founders and original vestrymen of Augusta’s Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Coming to the city from Ireland in 1839, he joined pharmacist William D’Antignac and later Dr. Thomas Battey. In the 1870s, he and H.H. Hickman formed a co-partnership under the name of Edward Barry and Company as owners of a wholesale and retail drug business.

One of the firm’s first products was Barry’s Malarial Antidote put up in large and small glass bottles embossed with the medicine’s name and Augusta, Ga. Large (9-1/4 inches tall) and small (7 inches tall) bottles came in various shades of amber, including black glass and clear glass and are prized by collectors.

In 1889, J. Marshall Horsey served as a clerk in Barry’s business until at least 1893. Two years later, Horsey established his own drug business and advertisements list him as the manufacturer of Horsey’s Antidote for Malaria. Could this be his own formula or that of his former employer who was just months away from death? Horsey’s long-necked, amber bottles even duplicate those of Barry in size and shape.

Equally prominent with Barry was pharmacist Louis A. Gardelle, who was endowed with lots of imagination. While he was the developer of many concoctions sold out of his drug store on Broad Street, he became famous for a coughs and colds medicine called “RIVER SWAMP CHILL & FEVER CURE,” circa 1884.

FROG POND CHILL & FEVER CURE and nothing else. After the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed, “CURE” became “TONIC” and amber blown bottles gave way to machine-made cobalt blue bottles. The latter are considered rare because the company went out of business following the death of Davenport.

The main reason his bottles in various shades of amber are sought after by today’s collectors specializing in cures is because the large and small versions are embossed with a figure of an alligator laying in a bed of weeds.

Two more Augusta pharmacists are worth mentioning because of their late19th century bitters and other medicines. Dr. William H. Tutt (1823-1898) was an 1840s graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta (he is listed on the official graduates list).

Check out his claims (from an 1891 Grier’s Almanac): “The Great Chill and Fever Cure! Guarantee: Where two bottles taken and fail to BREAK UP CHILLS, the MONEY WILL BE REFUNDED. River Swamp Chill and Fever Cure is a certain cure for Dumb Chills, Chills and Fever and Chronic Chills. Price 50 cts and $1.00 per bottle..”

The stuff sold through 1905 and the next year Congress passed the Pure Food & Drug Act, effectively ridding the drug market of cures, including that one.

F.A. Beall and Joseph B. Davenport were the next pharmacists to “hop” onto the Augusta cure scene with their Frog Pond Chill & Fever Cure. But they weren’t brave enough to emboss their 1887 bottles with a frog! They also did not emboss their city’s name on any of the bottles, causing a bit of confusion among early collectors who thought Charleston, South Carolina was the home base because several of the bottles had been found there.

He decided to abandon his practice as a physician and embarked in the drug business (in 1845). The first year a newspaper advertisement extolled the virtues of Tutt’s Golden Eagle Bitters was 1870. Early bottles did not have the city’s name embossed on side panels, but a later version (quite rare) did.

Yet another Augusta bitters more scarce than Tutt’s was the Georgia Bitters produced by the partnership of William Hale Barrett and Robert H. Land in 1871. There are just three of those amber bottles known today. Both Tutt and Barrett went on to play important roles in their city’s political history.

There are nearly 90 embossed Augusta drug store bottles in existence, dating from the 1830s through the early 20th century. The aforementioned pharmacists were joined by many others who developed their own concoctions.

And these are just a portion of Augusta’s collectible antique bottles, many of which will be on display at the Augusta Museum of History during the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors 50th National Convention and Expo Aug. 1-3 in Augusta’s Marriott Hotel and the adjacent Convention Center show rooms.

he Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors will celebrate its 50th year as the leader in the hobby of collecting antique bottles by holding its annual National Show and Expo in Augusta, Georgia August 1-3, 2019.

Gardelle’s most famous concoction was a coughs and colds medicine named the River Swamp Chill & Fever Cure. Sold from 1884 to the early 1900s in 50-cent and $1 bottles, the glass containers sport the image of an alligator resting in a bed of weeds.

Host hotel is the Marriott on Reynolds Street adjacent to the Riverwalk along the Savannah River. The show will be held in the adjacent Augusta Convention Center.

Because of the gator, collectors who specialize in cures pay exorbitant sums whenever these bottles show up in public auctions. The large size is much rarer than the small and both can be seen in the special display of rarities. The bottles are in various shades of amber.

The reception for seminar speakers, dealers and other VIPs will be held Thursday afternoon, Aug. 1, in the rotunda of the Augusta Museum of History where bottles from the 50-year Bill and Bea Baab Collection will be on display. The reception is not open to the public. The annual banquet for the membership only will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, starting at 6 p.m.

Seminars will be conducted during the morning on Friday, Aug. 2, followed by the show opening to early buyers. The show reopens Saturday from 8 a.m., to 5 p.m. The seminars are open free to the public. Admission to the show costs $5. Displays covering many facets of bottle collecting will be assembled around the showroom wall areas.

It is hard to believe, but a Georgia collector swears he saw a cobalt blue River Swamp at a bottle show many years ago. Baab told the collector that he was mistaken, that he confused another Augusta cure (Frog Pond Chill & Fever Cure) that had a cobalt-colored example. The collector retorted: “It was sort of hard to forget that alligator!”

Not even a fragment of a cobalt gator bottle has been brought to light, but who knows what the future holds?

Collectors and dealers from throughout the United States and other parts of the world will begin arriving in the city during late July.

Among exhibits will be the antique bottles sold by pioneer Augusta soda water manufacturer Edward Sheehan, related photographic material and other Augusta-related artifacts from the collection of Walter E. Smith, of Augusta.

The Augusta Museum of History will mount two special collections from the 531 antique bottles donated several years ago by the Baabs. Included will be the up-close-andpersonal display of some of the rarest bottles sold by Augusta druggists L.A. Gardelle, William H. Tutt, W.H. Barrett and R.H. Land, “Dr.” John Dennis and J.B. Davenport during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Dr. William H. Tutt (Aug. 31, 1823 - March 16, 1898) was a graduate of the Medical Department of the University of Georgia (presently the Medical College of Georgia).

He followed his profession as a physician until the 1840s when he embarked in the drug business.

Among Dr. Tutt’s patent medicines was his Golden Eagle Bitters, first advertised in The Augusta Chronicle in 1870. There are a few variants apart from honey amber and dark amber colors. Most of the bottles do not have an AUGUSTA, GA., panel, but one example does and it is in a private collection.

“Dr.” Dennis was in business from the 1840s until his death in the 1870s. His title is in quotes because it is suspected that he was not a licensed pharmacist. However, more than 200 years later, the large bottle containing his Georgia Sarsaparilla is one of the rarest Augusta containers. The Baabs’ example came from an attic in an Edgefield, South Carolina residence and was received in a trade with another collector. Years later, that collector said: “Bill, you got the better part of that deal!”

Augusta pharmacist J.B. Davenport joined forces with fellow druggist Fauntleroy A. Beall and in 1887 produced the Frog Pond Chill & Fever Cure, yet another coughs and colds concoction.

Alas, there are no frogs embossed on the bottles, but pharmacists selling the stuff included cotton-padded papier-mache’ frogs, fragile things that did not survive to make it into the present time..

There are a number of different varieties, including some with italics lettering, block lettering and even a cobalt-blue example that was manufactured in an automatic bottle machine in the early 20th century. It is the rarity since the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 forced manufacturers to delete the word “CURE” from their advertising. The blue bottle’s wording has been changed to “TONIC” and yes, there is an amber example. Cures and tonics are in this display.

The flask was probably made Convention about 1828 and carries the inscription: “Baltimore Glass Works.” Most collectors, dealers and Center auction catalogues accept the unidentified bust as a profile of General Zachary Taylor.

However, there has always been some uncertainty about the Taylor designation due to the youthful appearance of the unidentified officer and the date of the flask, which preceded by 20 years the exploits that made Zachary Taylor famous during the war with Mexico. Helen McKearin pointed out this anomaly and suggested that the mystery officer may be Andrew Jackson, but the Taylor designation persisted. Recently, Jeff Noordsy and I looked into this question, and I believe solved the mystery. We can now say with a high degree of confidence that the unidentified officer is neither Taylor nor Jackson, but rather Lt. Colonel George Armistead. Lt. Colonel Armistead successfully commanded the defense of Fort McHenry against the British bombardment in 1815, thereby saving the city of Baltimore from capture. The large American flag that he flew during the battle is the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. ​Armistead’s left-facing likeness on the flask appears to have been taken directly from a print of his profile, which no doubt was circulated widely in the Baltimore area. The hero of Baltimore has been immortalized by a marble monument constructed on Monument Hill overlooking the City of Baltimore, and by a large full-body bronze installed at Ft. McHenry. Armistead died at the age of 38, in 1818, three years after the Battle of Baltimore.

South Carolina Local Flasks – Harvey S. Teal – Columbia, South Carolina In 2005, Harvey S. Teal joined Rita Foster Wallace as co-authors of “The South Carolina Dispensary & Embossed S.C. Whiskey Bottles & Jugs, 1865-1915.” The book’s contents were an exhaustive study of the dispensary system (1893-1915) which gave the state the sole right to sell whiskey and other alcoholic beverages, eliminating the many local merchants who had been selling

labels, but many of them are embossed.

Teal, now 90, caught the “bottle bug” in the late 1950s and admittedly has never been “cured.” A few years ago, he placed his memories on paper (actually, on the pages of Bottles and Extras, the federation magazine) as “A Reminiscence of 53 years of Bottle Collecting in South Carolina” in a four-part series. It made for fascinating reading. He also is a prominent philatelist and historian and an authority on Confederate postal history. Other books written by Teal include “Partners with the Sun,” the story of South Carolina photographers, 1840-1940; “Just Mud, Kershaw County, South Carolina Pottery to 1980” with Arthur Porter McLaurin, and in 1976 co-authored with Paul Jeter “Columbia’s Past in Glass.”

Charleston Colored Sodas – Tommy Schimpf – Charleston, South, Carolina Tommy Schimpf and his wife Lisa live in Charleston, South Carolina. Tommy graduated from Clemson University where he majored in architecture and currently is a partner in an architectural firm. One summer between semesters, he was employed by Orkin, the pest control company, and during a termite inspection he found some old bottles underneath an old house. One was a broken applied color labeled soda (ACL) and the other was an 1858 Mason jar.

Kola Wars – Dennis Smith – Buffalo, New York Dennis discovered the thrill of bottle digging as a 12-year-old kid in Birmingham, Alabama, when he found his first straight-sided Coke bottle. He found more than Cokes and Pepsi’s. He also found Wiseolas, Rye-Olas, Cola-Nips, Celery-Colas, and many others and wondered what happened to these brands?

A trip to his local library ignited a lifetime of research into soft drink history. He has scoured many libraries, archives, courthouses, and private collections across the United States seeking first-person accounts and previously unpublished records. With degrees in Archaeology and History, he once wrote a graduate thesis: Soft Drinks and Dopes: Changing Perceptions of Soda Water in America.

An avid bottle collector, he has exhibited at bottle shows across the United States. He has written for and been the subject of articles in newsletters and magazines, and written numerous books.

He currently is working on additional books regarding soft drink history and culture and will publish additional titles in the near

He first focused on collecting ACL sodas, but his interest grew toward collecting earlier drink bottles. He learned that these earlier bottles can be found in old outhouse locations called “privies.”

The ACL collection was eventually sold and since the early ‘80s Tommy devoted weekend time and energy digging privies. He and his digging buddy, Chip Brewer, together compiled two of the finest collections of colored Charleston sodas anywhere.

Other than books on the South Carolina Dispensary system, there are few books about South Carolina bottles. Tommy is working on books about South Carolina ACL sodas, South Carolina medicines, South Carolina’s blob top and Hutchinson bottles and South Carolina embossed drink bottles. He has already written a book on South Carolina “hobbleskirt” Coca-Cola bottles. All the books are nearing completion and “I just need to buckle down and focus on completion,” said Tommy, who is still employed.

Some years back, I started out to do a travel feature on the Coca-Cola museums in Vicksburg, Miss., and Monroe, La. After talking with the Biedenharn people, I realized there was so much more to this and, as far as I could learn, no one had done a book which emphasized the real contribution the pioneer bottlers made in creating what became one of the world’s most famous products. This book (Coca-Cola Trails) is a tribute to them. . .as will be a sequel now being researched and written. My other books are about area history including Hot Wells, a “Louisiana ghost” of a former health resort.

When I have time, I collect brewing memorabilia. That started back in the 1970s. I did some public relations for the Pabst Brewing Co., in Milwaukee and also did some things for Dixie. Mostly, I enjoy quiet time on my pretty bayou (yes, we have alligators) and cooking great Louisiana food. I can do a good crawfish boil, or a deep-fried turkey.

Ground-Penetrating Radar – Karl Harrar – Aiken, South Carolina Since 1985, I have designed electronic circuits while working for many large and small companies and at the Savannah River National Laboratory and Raytheon (Javelin and Tow missile systems), Motorola (hand-held communication devices, Smithsonian Institute (MMTO Telescope), Honeywell (B1B air data computer, DRS (night vision and thermal imaging systems), 3M (Control System Design), Volkswagen proving ground (endurance vehicle testing) and many other smaller electronic manufacturing companies.

I started collecting antique bottles about 1990, digging dumps until 10 years later when I started concentrating on privies. I thought there had to be an easier way than probing to find privies so I started to test devices in 2005: magnetometers, earth resistevity units, ground condivity units and, of course, GPR. I tried a commercial unit and found several privies in 2007. The trick was to come up with a unit that is a fraction of the cost of the commercial units. This took several years.

My future plan is to eventually build a robotic GPR that is autonomous, but one still has to dig. I envision an autonomous unit one would set in the middle of a huge field that used to be a town in the 19th century. It had disappeared years before. So my unit would traverse the entire area mapping and sending the information over the internet, It would also store it for 3D viewing using virtual reality goggles.

Doug is an avid researcher of family history and bottle collecting.

With the help of bottle enthusiasts Bill Baab and Mike Newman, he focused on the Augusta Brewing Company (chartered in 1888) and E. Sheehan’s Excelsior Bottling Works of Augusta. Doug not only amassed a high quality collection not only of bottles from those firms, but various artifacts like corkscrews and bartenders knives and original documents.

Doug’s great grandfathers are Edward William Herman, who founded the Augusta Brewing Company in 1888, and Edward Sheehan, who founded the Excelsior Bottling Works in 1880. The 1899 marriage of William A. Herman and Mary Helena “Mamie” Sheehan, Doug’s paternal grandparents, blended the German and Irish blood that runs through Doug’s veins today. “Everyone with that combination of blood has a dream to be directly involved in the beer business,” Doug said. His own dream came true when he joined his father in the beer business in 1967, ultimately owning and managing the company until he sold it in 2007.

Doug has served as president of the Georgia Beer Wholesalers’ Association as well as being a member of many Augusta civic organizations. He resides in Martinez near Augusta with his wife of 55 years, Jeanie Cason Herman. They have a son and a daughter.

Life, Ballentine Ale, Red Cap Ale and Carling Black Label. Under Doug’s management, the company acquired brands of Coors Brewing Co., and Molson of Canada. During his career, Doug saw the rise and fall of many brands, most notably Schlitz and Pabst.

Augusta Museum of History Reception The FOHBC invites you to join us Thursday, August 1, 2019, at a VIP Reception from 3:30 – 6:30 pm at the Augusta Museum of History located at 560 Reynolds Street, Augusta, Georgia 30901. Founded in 1937, the Augusta Museum of History is Augusta’s oldest historical agency devoted to the preservation and presentation of local and regional history.

The museum curates the largest and most significant historical collection in the CSRA and functions as a historical research and resource center for professional and amateur historians, media, organizations, and individuals, and is home to permanent exhibition Augusta’s Story, a 12,000 year journey through the region’s past.

You will also be able to see the spectacular Bill and Bea Baab Bottle Collection housed at the museum. Many examples of a collection of 531 bottles from a brewery, patent medicine men, mineral water and soda water bottlers, mostly from Augusta, are placed in public view at the Augusta Museum of History. They joined 81 Augusta pharmacy bottles dating from 1830 through the early 20th

century, plus merchants’ whiskey jugs manufactured by master potters in nearby North Augusta (across the Savannah River) and Trenton, South Carolina. The massive collection was donated to the museum by Bill and Bea Baab, who wanted to leave a legacy to their adopted home-town that future generations could enjoy. Bill was born in Glenside, Pennsylvania, Bea in Bangor, Maine.

The collection was started in 1969.

This event will be catered with late afternoon light fare. The FOHBC will also arrange for shuttle bus service to and from the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center and Augusta Museum of History.

2019 FOHBC 50th Anniversary National Antique Bottle Convention | Augusta Banquet Keynote Speaker | Justin Guy We are excited to announce that Justin Guy will be our banquet keynote speaker at the 2019 FOHBC 50th Anniversary National Antique Bottle Convention in Augusta, Georgia.

Justin Guy was born and reared in Edgefield County, South Carolina in the Trenton area and has worked in clay for over twenty years. He grew up living only a short distance from where Dave and other potters made their wares for over a century. He became fascinated with pottery at a young age and apprenticed under Stephen Ferrell at Old Edgefield Pottery.

Justin graduated Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Fine Arts with a focus in Ceramics. After graduation, he traveled to Taiwan and was received as an artist in residence at Tainan National University for the Fine Arts and spent three months learning Asian and specifically Taiwanese ceramic art forms and processes. While there, he learned from the ceramics professor Chin-Yuan Chang, and focused his studies on the ceramic aspects of the tea cultures of Japan, Korea, and especially Taiwan.

When he returned, Justin also traveled across the United States and Europe visiting museums, institutions and individual artists in order to learn from the many facets that the ceramic artist should know.

He worked at USC-Aiken as the Adjunct Professor of Ceramics and was also the Professor of Ceramics at Columbia College in Columbia, SC. He taught there for one year and left on good terms in order to focus his work and teaching in Aiken. He was the instructor of the ceramics courses at the University of South Carolina-Aiken campus for five years. He then served as the Instructor of Ceramics at Piedmont Technical College, Edgefield, South Carolina for a year.

Justin has returned to his position at USC-Aiken as the Adjunct Professor of Ceramics and is the Master Potter of the Phoenix Factory’s Old Edgefield Pottery.

Justin is also on the list of approved artists for the South Carolina

Arts Commission and has demonstrated as an artist in residence not only for Tainan National University, but also for the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia Museum of Arts, and demonstrated for local events including Aiken’s 175th Celebration, and as an artist in residence in local schools.

Justin will be giving an update on current events related to the Old Edgefield Pottery tradition and how our perception of its history has evolved over the past few years.

Proposed changes to the FOHBC By-laws As discussed in recent Board Meetings, the FOHBC is looking to refine the board officer election procedure. Highlighted below are the proposed changes to the FOHBC By-laws, which in summary allows the secretary to cast a singular vote when presented with an uncontested ballot of proposed officers on an election year. These changes are published for membership review, and will be voted on during the General Membership meeting at the FOHBC 50th Anniversary National Antique Bottle Convention in Augusta, Georgia, on August 2, 2019. Many thanks to Jim and Val Berry for initializing these changes.

Article VIII – Terms and Elections A. The nomination and election of all Federation officers including President, Vice President(s), Secretary, Treasurer, Business Manager, Membership Director, Public Relations Director, Conventions Director, Historian, Merchandising Director, Directors-at-Large (3), and Region Directors (4) shall be held every two years. Any officer may run for successive terms.

B. For the purpose of nominations, the President shall appoint a three (3) to five (5) member Nominating Committee at the annual convention meeting the year prior to the election year. (Per Article V, F: The Nominating Committee shall be composed of at least one member from each geographical region.) This committee shall prepare a slate of nominations for each office, listed in this Article, and these shall be published in the March/April issue of the official FOHBC periodical of the following year. Also, any member desiring to run for any office in the Federation may file a nomination form with the Election Committee (in accordance with procedures approved by the membership and instituted by the Election Committee) indicating the office they desire to run for. The deadline for filing this is April 1st of the year that the elections are held, unless otherwise stipulated and approved by the full membership of the Federation.

C. For the purpose of elections, the President shall appoint a five (5) person Election Committee to oversee and conduct the elections, and these shall be conducted in the following manner:

1. A ballot shall be prepared by the Election Committee with the nominated slate of officers, including those received on a nomination form, and this ballot shall bear the Federation seal so that it may not be duplicated. These ballots shall then be disseminated to FOHBC members and affiliated clubs in good standing (dues current as of May 1st of that year). As outlined in Article III, each Individual Membership, Associate Membership, Digital Membership, new and existing (remove the word “existing”) Life Membership shall have one vote, (for example, for a husband, wife and two children, ages 16 and 18, possessing one Individual Membership and three Associate Memberships, that family shall be entitled to four votes).

2. In such case whereas there is no opposition to any elected position, a motion shall be made and seconded for the FOHBC Secretary to cast one ballot for the nominated slate of officers, therefore, eliminating the need to conduct the election process described in C number 1 above.

2. Each Federation affiliated club shall be entitled to one vote per club, which is to be cast by a Federation representative of the club at the direction of that representative’s club.

3. These ballots shall then be returned to the Election Committee by a designated date and shall remain unopened until the annual convention meeting. The membership may, upon majority vote, make other arrangements for the return of the votes, if deemed necessary, at some future time.

4. The Election Committee shall open the ballots and tally them at a time stipulated at the convention. Any Federation member and/or candidate may view this process. Once the votes have been counted the Election Committee chairperson will then announce the results at the general membership meeting at a time designated by the presiding President, the results having been previously certified by the Election Committee as true and correct. The newly elected officers will take office at the conclusion of the annual convention at which they have been elected.

5. All nominees on the ballot shall be voted on by the entire membership and club representatives with the exception of the Region Directors, who shall be elected by a majority vote of only the members and clubs within their respective regions.

6. The person receiving the most votes shall be elected to the position under consideration. There will be a run-off only in the event of tie votes, and this procedure, if occurring, shall be set by the Election Committee.

7. From time to time, it may be necessary to slightly alter the election procedure, and, if this is necessary, it may be done by a majority vote of the members in attendance at an annual general membership meeting. An amendment to these bylaws to do so shall not be required.

8. Appointments by the President may fill any position not filled by this process.

I am going to try to complete another 28 fruit jars in April and May. There is much more work for each of the fruit jars as each one requires 3 to 6 hours of editing for each spin. I know Jerry McCann is providing information for his jars. Do we need to reach out to other Fruit Jar collectors for information?

I will be going early to Augusta, Georgia to photograph four of Bill Baab’s bottles. Bill communicated the following: Here are the bottles I have selected. Most are from my (The Augusta Museum of History) collection, others from different collectors whose bottles’ conditions are better.

The FOHBC Virtual Museum has been established to display, inform, educate, and enhance the enjoyment of historical bottle and glass collecting by providing an online virtual museum experience for significant historical bottles and other items related to early glass. ****************

Progress on the Virtual Museum is moving ahead at an advanced pace with galleries for Bitters, Historical Flasks and Spirits (whiskey, bourbon gin, rye, etc.) which are from all regions such as Western, Eastern, Midwest (Kentucky) etc. The forms include cylinders, squares and flasks.

Fruit Jars, although I still refer to them as canning jars as folks canned other things beside fruit. Jerry McCann says only fruit was successful but my grandmother did vegetables that were out of this world!

While Alan is spinning his images, Ferdinand is working on getting the history behind each bottle. Eric McGuire is doing the spirits bottles history. Jerry McCann is providing the history on the jars and Mark Vuono is supplying the information on the historical flasks.

Ferdinand has done the bitters as he has a wealth of information on that area.

Alan will set up and will be imaging bottles at the 2019 FOHBC 50th Anniversary National Antique Bottle Convention in Augusta so if you have a bottle or two that you would like to see get into the museum, contact Alan ahead of the show or drop by the Virtual Museum showroom floor area to see if he can fit it in.

All other categories of bottles and glass will become part of the museum in time. We will announce what we are looking for when the time to start new categories comes about. At this time, Alan has done 209 spins and is set up to do another 40 of 50 by the time the Augusta show happens.

I was going to purchase it and then sell it to John Wolf, but changed my mind. He has a damaged example. I’m mailing my first pre-show story published in my local newspaper and you’ll see a photo of the bottle.

Dr. J. Dennis’s Georgia Sarsaparilla, Augusta, Ga. Attic mint, iron pontil, circa 1840s. It was found in an Edgefield, S.C., attic. I traded a cobalt John Ryan / 1866 / Augusta, Ga., soda and a S.C. Dispensary (embossed palmetto tree), circa 1890s. I got the best part of that deal, but back then (in the early 1970s), neither the owner or the trader had much knowledge about early bottles.

From cows to consumers: Daily milk delivery in bottles

A bit more than 100 years ago, Augustans began enjoying daily delivery of milk in sanitized bottles, a far cry from how it was made available earlier.

Back in the 19th century, milk was sold from delivery wagons out of open containers and poured into anything the public could provide. It was not sanitary. So during the first quarter of the 20th century, health officials knew things had to get better and it did with the development of the milk bottle and the dairy industry.

That the delivery service existed was due to the national social experiment called Prohibition. Georgia went dry in 1906, became drier in 1908 and by 1919 the whole country had “dried out.”

The Georgia-Carolina Dairy Products was organized in 1915 by members of the Sancken family and others and an editorial in The Augusta Chronicle had this to say: “John Sancken had a vision.

He knew the passing of the bone-dry (liquor) law in Georgia would close up the saloons and that ice cream had great possibilities. Practically the only milk produced in this vicinity at that time came from small herds owned by dairymen living close to the city and who supplied milk in bottles door-to-door.”

And so the collecting of early milk bottles joined the antique bottle collecting ranks. One of the first organizations to promote it was M.O.O. (Milk Bottles Only Organization) whose leader (the Head Holstein) was the late Fred Rawlinson. The writer has a signed copy of Fred’s 1970 book, “Make Mine Milk.” The softbound book has been out of print, but copies can still be located at online sources.

The current organization is the National Association of Milk Bottle Collectors (NAMBC) which produces an informative

newsletter called “The Milk Route.”

Meanwhile, among early 20th century dairies in Augusta were Walton’s Dairy, Turpin Hill Dairy, El Dorado Dairy and Haskell’s Dairy, the latter in North Augusta, South Carolina across the Savannah River.

As the century progressed, more than 30 dairies existed in Aiken County, South Carolina and Richmond and Columbia counties in Georgia and all sold their milks in bottles. Some of the containers were embossed (El Dorado’s bottles had an outline of a cow), while others were identified by applied color labels which were developed in the 1930s.

The Georgia-Carolina Dairy Products Company evolved into Sancken’s Dairy and its bottles – quarts, pints, half-pints and even a fruit drink – are all collectible today. During WW II, the dairy joined others across the country by bottling its milks in patriotic bottles. While some dairies used war slogans (Keep ‘Em Flying!”), Sancken’s bottles were red, white and blue – the “white” being the milk.

Prohibition even forced the Augusta Brewing Company to change its name to the Augusta Ice & Beverage Company and sell chocolate milk and other non-alcoholic products to stay solvent. The Imperial Chocolate Milk was sold in round, half-pint embossed bottles (no larger sizes are known to exist) and those little bottles are highly collectible today.

Many of the local milks will be on display during the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors 50th National Show and Expo Aug. 1-3 in Augusta.

Richard Sheaf, formerly of Massachusetts, was a stamp designer for the US Postal Service. RIchard was also an avid antique glass collector specializing in blown three mold glass.

Richard amassed quite a collection of rare pieces including numerous pieces of extremely rare BIM whimsies.

One day he contacted my father and I and told us he expressed an interest in designing an American Glass stamp. He knew my Dad had some flasks and I had some three mold glass. He also contacted Norm Heckler and the owner of the purple Moscow, Ohio blown thee mold sugar bowl. He arranged a photo shoot at a professional photographers in Massachusetts where we all met and brought some glass. The purple sugar bowl was sent...the owner not being present. We took numerous pictures with each picture containing about 8-9 pieces of various pieces of glass. After the photo shoot, we all waited anxiously for the results.

Dick. Dick finally called me and told me the Postal Service did not like the stamp. They thought it was too cluttered with different pieces. Dick said he had to narrow it down to four pieces of glass on each stamp. He told me he was going to use Norm’s Callahan’s Old Cabin Whiskey, the purple Moscow Ohio sugar bowl and my blue blown three mold decanter.

He needed some flask that was green and tall to complete the stamp. I immediately recommended the green hearts and flowers flask. Dick agreed and said “The stamp is made.”

The rest is history as they say. The stamp was issued in the late 1990’s at the Corning Museum of Glass. It is interesting to note that all the other pieces of glass on the stamp are from The Corning Museum of Glass.

The stamp with the four pattern molded pieces of glass is the only stamp with pieces from private collections. Needless to say, it was quite an honor for both my father and I to be able to contribute two pieces for the stamp. So now you know “The rest of the story.”

B&B: A Tale of Two Cities and Trademarks By: Jack Sullivan

T

he pre-Prohibition whiskey trade was rife with examples of trademark infringement but the number of trademark cases actually taken to court within the industry appears to have been exceedingly small. An exception was the firm of Bluthenthal & Bickart, widely known as “B&B.” (Fig. 1).

Even as the partners were being forced from their Atlanta base to Baltimore before the tide of Prohibition, they headed to the courts to defend their trademarks.

The leader of this liquor business was Aaron Bluthenthal, born in 1856 in Munchweiler, Pfalz, Germany, the son of Absalom and Rebecca Bluthenthal. About the year 1872, at the age of 16, Aaron emigrated to the United States. It appears that he initially settled in Arkansas where a number of Bluthenthal relatives lived.

By the age of 24 he had moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There he met Monroe L. Bickart, several years his junior, who had been born in Pennsylvania but had married a woman from Georgia and was living in Atlanta. Not long after, Bluthenthal married Bickart’s sister, Francis. They would have two children.

In 1880, Bluthenthal and Bickart established a wholesale liquor firm, located at 42-46 Marietta Street, and later established a second outlet at 17-19 Forsyth Street (Fig. 2). By 1897 they also had created a branch in Cincinnati,

Ohio, located at 220 East Front Street. On their letterhead and in their advertising they also claimed to be proprietors of the Anderson County and W. B. Montgomery Distilleries in Kentucky and the Crystal Springs Distillery in Pickens County, Georgia. More to the truth, they were purchasing large quantities of raw product from these distilleries and then “rectifying” (blending) it in their own facilities.

Bluthenthal & Bickart packaged their product in glass flasks (Figs. 3,4) embossed with their name, a “B&B” logo, and the tag line, “Fine Old Whiskey.” The partners issued a blizzard of brand names for their liquor. Unlike many of their competitors, however, they took the time and not inconsiderable expense to trademark many of their whiskeys: In 1904, “Old Stock Four Aces” and “Old Joe Rye”; in 1905, “B&B,” “Royal Arch” and

“Old Rookery”; in 1906, “Mountain Dell,” “Mark Rogers,” “Mistletoe,” “Silas Deane” and “Kentucky Blue Blood”; in 1907, “Hop Scotch” and in 1908, “Alligator Bait.”

From the outset in Atlanta, Bluthenthal & Bickart issued an array of giveaway items to the saloons, restaurants, hotels and other establishments buying their liquor. They included a whiskey miniature “scratch jug” (Fig. 5), shot glasses (Figs. 6,7), and a match safe (Fig.8). Note that each of these items carried the B&B brand as well as a prominent mention of Atlanta. The partners clearly were proud of their adopted home town.

Perhaps Bluthenthal & Bickart’s most expensive giveaway was a wooden framed print of two of the company brands, Four Aces Whiskey and FitzhughLee Whiskey (Fig. 9). The name of the latter brand is particularly interesting. Fitzhugh Lee was a Confederate cavalry general who subsequently vowed allegiance to the Union. He became a U.S. Army general who saw service in the Spanish-American War. My assumption is that the partners named the whiskey not long after Lee’s death in 1905.

In 1905, Bluthenthal & Bickart brought suit in the Florida courts against Theodore Mohlmann, a Jacksonville, Florida, liquor dealer. They claimed Mohlmann had violated their trademark on their Old Joe Rye, including the size, shape and color of the bottle, a similarly designed and colored label, and the

name given the whiskey: “Old Geo.” The crowning indignity, the plaintiffs said, was Mohlmann copying even the small corkscrew that the Atlanta firm attached to the Old Joe bottle. The Florida corkscrew was claimed to be virtually identical in “size, shape, quality and appearance.”

A Georgia liquor company attempting to shut down a Florida competitor in Florida courts clearly faced daunting challenges.

When the lower court in Jacksonville denied B&B an injunction and dismissed their case, the partners appealed to the State Supreme Court. While that court had some legal quibbles with the initial decision, it did not overturn it. Mohlmann’s Old Geo remained on the market.

Seemingly undaunted by this setback, the brothers-in-law subsequently pressed similar charges against a Montgomery, Alabama, liquor dealer named J. W. Epperson. Epperson, like Mohlmann, was aping the Old Joe bottle right down to the corkscrew. He called his booze, “Old Jack.” Once again, Bluthenthal and Bickart found it hard sledding in an outof-state court. A Montgomery lower court denied their action for an injunction against Epperson. Still fighting for their brands, the partners appealed the lower court decision to the Alabama Supreme Court.

On Dec. 20, 1906, as the higher court upheld the earlier verdict, its judges added insult to injury. They scolded the Georgia partners on the grounds that examination had shown their Old Joe brand to be not as, as advertised, very old stock, fine old whiskey, or even rye whiskey. B&B had misrepresented the product on their labels with false statements, the jurists alleged, and by so doing had vitiated any trademark protection the partners might claim. Although Epperson’s conduct was “without justification,” the Alabama Supreme Court ruled, it was unwilling to issue an injunction and make him stop selling Old Jack Rye. Meanwhile back in Atlanta, Aaron Bluthenthal was gaining recognition in the community because of the success of the liquor house and his leadership in civic betterment.

In 1905 the Atlanta Constitution newspaper carried a story that cited Bluthenthal as part of a small committee of prominent businessmen who were working to bring the Georgia State Fair to Atlanta and who had pledged to guarantee its financial success with their own funds.

As elsewhere in the South, however, the drumbeat for statewide prohibition was growing by the day and in 1908, Georgia voted to ban all production and sales of alcoholic drink. The city that B&B had so extolled their advertising now was “dry.” Bluthenthal & Bickart rapidly moved their barrels, bottles and brands to Baltimore, Maryland. They recognized that the environment for prospering was much better in a state and city where whiskey was a major commodity. The partners purchased a large building downtown at 301-307 Lombard Street (Fig. 10) and late in 1908 reopened their liquor house. Note the large B&B sign on the roof.

ultimately found the state less than hospitable to their whiskey trade. Moreover, they had placed their trust in the Nation’s trademark laws only to reap disappointment and even a scolding. Nonetheless, as a tribute to their intelligence and hard work, B&B persevered — and prospered — for almost 60 years.

The partners succeeded in this second effort as they had in Georgia. They featured their familiar brands and a few new ones, like “B&B Maryland Rye,” as shown on a back-of-the-bar bottle (Fig. 11). Baltimore now showed up prominently on their bottle labels (Fig. 12) as well as on give- away items such as shot glasses (Fig. 13) and saloon signs (Fig. 14).

The 1910 census found Aaron Bluthenthal, age 54, living with wife Francis in a high-class board house on Baltimore’s Eutaw Street. Monroe Bickart and his wife also were lodged there. The firm appeared in Baltimore directories at the Lombard Street address until 1919 and the advent of National Prohibition. Once shut down it never reopened.

Albert Bluthenthal, the German immigrant, and Monroe Bickart, the transplanted Pennsylvanian, over the years faced major setbacks in business. Having made their home in Georgia, they

Permissions Permissions but Nowhere to Dig!

eems like it’s been way too long since I wrote a digging article. Truth be told, it was hard going in 2018. I did have a couple better digs (which I will get to shortly) but a majority of the digs in 2018 just didn’t pan out very well. We had everything thrown at us. Dug pits that were too new. Dug pits that were the right age, but not a lot of bottles thrown in. We dug some great ancient pits that had all the good signs like

1. They were not dug before (that’s the first hurdle) 2. The pit had a nice layer of trash on the way down like feather edge pottery shards, shoes, bones 3. Didn’t have a bunch of bricks or other debris that hindered digging 4. Were wet but not sloppy wet or water filled

But, again, these pits just either didn’t have any bottles (which happened more than once) or only had broken shards of what would have been great bottles (1830s-40 ales, swirl flip, colored sodas, marked flasks, etc.).

On one of the better digs in 2018, I had to start the digging by myself. Thaddeus had some repairs to the roof of his historical home to take care of, but I wanted to take advantage of the cooler temperature in the morning that day (the temperature got into the 90s that day, so 76 in the morning felt cool). After digging for about an hour, I was 3 feet down and hit a large boulder. It took me about 30 minutes to dig around it, get it to start breaking free, and to flip it over several times until I got it to the pit edge then heave it out. It was for sure probably right at my limit. Once the boulder was removed, I could finally start to open the hole up.

Bottles and Extras that were in the pit. I wasn’t worried as being so high up it probably was going to be some junk bottle. But when I picked it up, I see it’s a soda; then cleaning it off, I see the name and know it’s pre-Civil War and pontiled! Within a minute I see several other bottle bases and start digging them out. I get a broken Piker, then a large bottle which turns out to be a very desirable iron pontil medicine (Bretlingers Alterative) mostly undamaged (did have a stress crack in the neck area, which appears to be in making as another example I know of has the same damage in the same location).

Then I see some of a stoneware base and pull that out: it’s a pre-statehood beer (Pharr & Winterholler) in great shape. By this time, I’ve been digging for 3 hours and maybe 4 feet down. Thaddeus finally makes it over and immediately we find another stoneware beer (so we each got one). A couple common bottles come out then nothing.

I probe the hole and it goes another 5 feet so Thad and I start to open it up some (the overburden was all rock and brick). We made it down to the bottom in one small spot and hit another trash layer, but this one was very ancient! The first couple shards were a Flora Temple in color, a piece of a Fairview Glass Works flask, and half of a BP&B half pint scroll. By now I had been digging for over 6 hours and had to get back home to take care of some commitments. Given how big the pit was and all the overburden, not to mention it was over 90 degrees by now, we decided to fill it in and come back. Ouch. Yeah, it’s still bugging me now as we are still waiting to get back to that one. When I didn’t have any digs going on, I would even catch up with some other local diggers to check them out. Here’s John Leonard with a bucket full of you know what! And again with a nice open pontil Butler Ink from Cincy.

So what about all these permissions with nowhere to dig? Well, first off, I have permissions in 4 states and to top that off I have located privies in all 4 states. But (yes there is always a but) in one state the privy is so large that it will take at least 3, if not 4, people to dig, and to coordinate all the people with the schedule of the property owner just hasn’t worked out yet (the privy is on a 1830 mansion in a town in Kentucky).

So that hasn’t worked out YET! (FYI, I have another great permission in the area behind another mansion but haven’t located that privy yet.)

In Ohio, we found several privies and dug one of them. It was full of water starting at the 4-foot level. After bailing out water forever (6 garbage cans full), we realized that an old leach bed had

encroached into one side of the pit and was full of water (at least it was clean). We did find several 1870’s era Ayers and 1 pontil sided puff (maybe an ink) but never could get the water down so we had to fill it in. We found 3 other features in the two yards next door, but one had water to the top (and was at least 7 feet deep). The other feature had water at the 4-foot level when we tried to dig it, so had to fill it in. Just way to much water right now in this town to dig. Locally here in Pennsylvania, I have another great permission at a former mansion. A neighbor, who is friends with the landowner, showed me a likely spot for the privy and, wham, we believe we found a 4-seater! The owner is very old but never home (guess she likes going out every day to do errands and get out of the house). So, after 5 attempts at getting final permission (the neighbors who I know already have a verbal from her that it’s cool to dig, but she wanted to meet me), I’m still waiting on the green light for that dig.

In West Virginia, I probed out 3 nice pits behind a large mansion and I do know the owners very well. However, they lease it out and don’t want to hassle the current tenant. I’m slowly working on lining that one up. So, as you can see, I have permission and more permission, know where a bunch of privies are, but for one reason or the other, just can’t dig them at this time. But you bet I’ll give an update in 2019 on how these all pan out. So for now (January 2019 as I write), digging locally in the shallow privies here, I’ve been able to stay busy, but mostly finding 1900 stuff. I did get a cobalt ink, a teal and a San Cura from Titusville Pa, and about 60 common clear bottles. Oh yeah, how about this Bicentennial pipe with eagle, liberty bell and shield on reverse dug locally (repair by Jim Healy). So that’s what I have so far this year to keep me going. In addition, I’ve been meeting a lot of very nice people, providing historic maps to a lot of the owners where I have been digging, and making plans to meet more folks in some prime historic towns in the coming months. ow before we begin, let me assure you that what I’m about to relate is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! Sadly, everything you are about to read is 100% fact.

A number of years ago, in the summer of 1999, we attended the Reno Bottle Show. Deb (my wife) and I opted to “rough it” that year and towed our travel trailer, staying at the Nevada State Park adjacent to the Bowers mansion west of the site of Washoe City, about half way in between Reno and Carson. Had a blast at the show and looked forward to camping and exploring over the next few days after the show. During the course of conversation with old pal Loren Love of Dayton, he recounted how urban sprawl was affecting even the Nevada desert with subdivisions beginning to spread out from Carson towards Dayton.

He lamented how even the old site of Sutro was slated for development and how a subdivision had recently been completed nearby.

The building had pushed nearly to the western edge of the old townsite and the balance of the site was slated for plat approval the next year.

combination of optimism, gut instinct, brute force and perseverance. With the aid of the photos and the accompanying terrain, we located where we surmised the main drag had been. Keep in mind that a century of flash flooding, winter snows and blowing wind can make dramatic changes in the desert floor. Still, it wasn’t long before we were into glass; and lots of it. We had quite obviously, lucked upon a large dumpsite covered by a foot or better of sandy dirt. It also became obvious that the Hostetters Bitters rep. had done a land office business back in the 1870’s.

We had a few archival photographs to work with and realized that this would be our last chance to dig there before the D8’s and belly dump trucks arrived, and the site was lost forever.

As everyone knows, Sutro had been hit hard (real hard) since the late 50’s and the odds against scoring were stacked against us. Still we had the photos and although I’ve never been particularly lucky compared to some, have been rewarded over the years for my Mapquest layout of the town

Every conceivable color was present. Lemon yellow to grass green – pucey amber to nearly black; you name it we dug it.

Dozens and dozens of crude, early amazing Hostetters were dug; all broken. Also plentiful were glop top cylinders. Well, at least broken ones.

Fearing for our liberty, we were also looking over our shoulders and in the air for any evidence that we’d been spotted since we were technically breaking the law, even back then. Never mind about the ethical dilemma of losing history for good thanks to progress; the threat of arrest, fines and jail time were an ever present thought. A couple of hours into the dig, the fear of arrest really began to sink in and my wife insisted that it was time to get out of Dodge.

It was then that I dug an intact top, neck and shoulder with embossing that seemed vaguely familiar. And yet, I couldn’t place it. I trotted over to the truck and tossed the chunk into the pouch in back of the front seat just in case we had to make a beeline out of there.

Prophesy fulfilled, we saw a tell tale plume of dust racing toward us along a jeep road that skirted the base of the hill.

Enough was enough. We scurried back to our truck, hopped in and sped off in the opposite direction.

Safely back at our campsite, I stared intently at the broken bottle. I knew this one, I’d seen it somewhere before, or had I? I thumbed through Bob Barnett’s 4th edition but nothing jumped out at me. Out came Wilsons text, again nothing. In desperation,

I pulled out my tattered copy of Thomas’s Whiskey Bottle of the Old West. I looked back at the piece. The top looked western to me, as did the color. The few letters of embossing also pointed to San Francisco, but what the heck was it. It was then that I thumbed to page 31 and looked at the bottle in the bottom right corner; number 98. Oh My God! I was holding apiece of the holy grail! There was no mistaking the location and combination of the few letters on the piece that I was holding.

Meanwhile, my wife was outside the trailer maintaining a diligent vigil for approaching BLM nazi’s. She was convinced that they’d gotten our description and license plate number and that we were done for. Yep, just a matter of time… Her mood deepened and by the next morning it was obvious that this cloud of doom wasn’t going to lift. Shortly after breakfast, we broke camp and headed north. A couple of hours later, we crossed the California border and by nightfall were “safely” back into Oregon, our trip cut short...

The next day was like any other. Work, stowing away the camping gear, cleaning the inside of the trailer, storing away bottles from the show and putting the books back in the library. It was then that I reopened the Thomas book to page 31. There it was, bottom right. That warm feeling returned as I went in search for the Old Signet piece. My piece of the grail! Hmm. Not in the trailer where I put it, not in the bottle boxes. That warm feeling quickly left me, replaced by a much, much hotter feeling. I asked my wife if she recalled where it was and she meekly replied that she was so sure that we were going to get caught that she’d wrapped it up with the garbage in the trailer and deposited it in the trash can back at the campground.

Not much was said around here for the next few days…

Moving the Big Rock in Council Groove, Kansas

t had been a couple months since I had gone bottle digging.

The fall and winter weather just hadn’t been very cooperative until this week. The weatherman was predicting high temperatures in the 50s and 60s for Northern Kansas. For the first weekend in January that was a great forecast. I had a bad case of cabin fever and the only way to treat it was to get out and dig!

I called Kenny Burbrink and ask him, “Are you ready to dig?”

“Yes,” was his immediate reply. Now all we had to do was come up with a place to go.

Kenny always seems to have some kind of plan in the back of his mind; this time was no exception. He and Kenny Resser had done a dig in Burlingame, Kansas and on his way home Kenny had passed through the old town of Council Grove, Kansas. Since we never had done a real dig there he thought it might be a good place to try.

When Kenny got home he started studying the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Council Grove. On the 1892 map he noticed a hotel, named The Midland, that sat off by itself, it was one that we hadn’t noticed or checked before because it’s not on the older maps (it opened in 1888).

When he looked at the Midland’s location on Google Earth he noted that it was now a vacant lot and looked like a good spot for a dig. He then went to the Morris County Assessor’s site on the Internet and got the owner’s name and address.

When he told me the details, I thought it would be a good place to dig. I also remembered that Ed Stewart and I had approached the owner of another hotel site, in Council Grove, for permission to probe and dig but had been turned down. The owner told us he knew the bottles were very valuable and planned on digging it himself! Since it had been quite a few years ago it would be a good place to try again; accordingly, we made plans to meet in Council Grove on Saturday morning and try for permission for the hotel.

After hanging up with Kenny, I called Ed Stewart to see if he might be available to dig the coming weekend. He told me that he would check and get back to me. You might wonder why we would schedule a dig based on one hotel site. The reason is simple: Bottles! Old hotels usually had large outhouse pits, into which were thrown bottles from everywhere! People traveled

with their medicines and then disposed of the empty bottles when they were finished with them.

Lots of liquor bottles always turn up and that means you also get pop bottles that were probably drunk by the tee totalers; anyway, we’ve always had good success digging outhouses behind hotels and boarding houses. I checked the 1885 and 1887 Sanborn Maps and saw there were several old residences that could also possibly be dug. That gave us other possibilities to get permission should we bomb out on The Midland Hotel site. While waiting for our weekend dig I did a little research about the history of Council Grove.

In 1825, a treaty was negotiated with the Osage Indians for a right-of-way for the Santa Fe Trail, part of which, later became the main street of Council Grove. The treaty took place in “The Grove,” which provided the name of Council Grove. During the spring of 1846, the Kanza Indians moved to a new reservation along the upper valley of the Neosho River, near the present site of Council Grove. That same year, Seth M. Hays became the first settler in Council Grove, when he established a trading post to trade with the Indians. He built the first house, a log cabin, on the west bank of the Neosho River. The cabin served as a store and dwelling for Mr. Hays, his adopted daughter, and a freed slave.

In 1849, the Methodist Episcopal Church began to build the Kaw Mission at Council Grove. It opened in 1850; however, it closed in 1854. The mission building later became the first school for the children of Council Grove.

The town began to grow, and soon was the last point of trade on the Santa Fe Trail until travelers reached New Mexico. From 1849 to 1854 was a prosperous time for Council Grove and there was talk of making it the Territorial Capital of Kansas, but the land it stood on belonged to the Indians and the Capital went elsewhere.

The first hotel was built in 1856 and in 1857 Seth Hays opened the Hays House, which today is the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi River. In 1858, the town was approved for incorporation by the State Legislature. A townsite was soon surveyed and the settlement had officially opened for business.

I heard back from Ed Stewart that he would be joining us for the dig. Too bad Francis Wiltz couldn’t be here; that would have gotten the whole digging gang back together.

afternoon, spend the night and meet Kenny and Ed on Saturday morning. While, the weather forecast was going to be great for the weekend, it didn’t look like it when I woke up on Friday morning. There were about four inches of ice and snow on the ground in Mustang, Oklahoma.

I had to spend some time cleaning my vehicle off and loading it with some digging equipment, but about 1:30 p.m. I headed my pickup north to Kansas one more time. The snow rapidly thinned as I drove north and soon there was no sign of it except the four inches still remaining on my pickup’s bed cover.

It was almost dark by the time I pulled into Council Grove. I headed to the Cottage Hotel in the downtown area to spend the night. I hadn’t made a reservation, but since it was past the holiday season, I didn’t expect any difficulty in getting a room.

Sure enough, there was no problem when I inquired about a room. I talked to the lady at the desk and she told me that the Cottage Hotel had originally been built in 1867, with several additions being made over the years. I noticed that the area around the hotel had been paved or I might have been asking for permission to probe for an outhouse. I then drove over to take a look at the vacant lot where the Midland Hotel had been located.

The lot did look good for digging. There was a restaurant, across the street, named The Saddle Rock, that used the front part of the lot for customer parking.

I then took a drive to see if I could locate the lot owner’s house.

My GPS directed me to a large house on the southeast side of town. However, no one answered my knock nor were there any lights burning. Time to get something to eat.

I had supper at the historic Hays House Restaurant just around the corner from my hotel. A sign out front says that it was established in 1857. According to information on the Internet, George Armstrong Custer ate there while passing through Council Grove with his Seventh Cavalry in 1867. Custer apparently like Council Grove as he purchased 120 acres of land there as a speculation.

The next morning Ed came by my hotel. Kenny had texted me that he was running late so Ed and I decided to see if the lot owner might be home this morning. We took Ed’s pickup and left mine parked at the motel. Again, no one answered the door, so we decided to tour the town to check out other potential digging sites. The older Sanborn Maps didn’t show much of the residential areas, but we noticed that quite a few houses had brass plaques mounted by the front doors. These probably indicated when they were built and possibly who had lived in them during the early days of the town. Might be handy in figuring out a good digging spot.

After our tour we rechecked the owner’s house, but still no one was home. It was beginning to look like we would have to fall back on Plan B. We drove back to the vacant lot. I happened to think, “The restaurant was using part of the lot for parking, maybe they would know how to get hold of the owner.”

Ed waited in truck while I went inside to check out my theory.

The Saddle Rock Cafe must have the best food in town as it was very busy. I waited for a short time at the cash register before a girl came over and asked me if she could help. I inquired about the ownership of the vacant lot. She yelled at a lady cooking in the kitchen, “Who owns that lot across the street?” The lady cook looked up and said, “We do.” She then came out and I explained what I wanted. She told me that I’d have to talk to her mother.

Soon an older lady came out and introduced herself. I again explained that we wanted to dig for old bottles and she replied, “I guess it would be all right if you fill in your holes.” I thanked her and assured her we would leave everything in good shape.

I gave them a thumbs up as I approached them.

Ed gave me a ride back to my truck while Kenny started probing. I told Ed that Kenny would have the privy located by the time we returned.

Sure enough when I drove up Kenny was marking off the walls of the pit. He said, “I think it’s a rock liner.” The pit was located in the center of the hotel lot right on the alley. The dimensions, he had marked off, indicated the pit was about ten feet long and four feet wide. The short probes couldn’t hit a bottom so Ed got out his nine footer. It also couldn’t find a bottom. Kenny did hit some glass when probing. We were concerned that the pit might have been dipped which might mean a lot of work for very few old bottles. However, the only way to find out was to dig. We spread out a tarp, beside the hole, and started digging.

Almost immediately, we discovered that the outhouse had a large, cement foundation run through the middle of it. This foundation was a lot newer than the privy, having been added much later for some kind of building. There simply wasn’t enough room, on either side of the foundation to dig with the foundation in place.

That meant it had to go.

We dug out around both sides of the foundation. I don’t know how big the building supported by this foundation was, but it looked big enough to hold up a skyscraper. Kenny discovered that the founda-

tion was cracked clear through about six feet from the south end of the outhouse. That gave us a place to attack the foundation, so we got out the bars to see if we could break up the foundation.

While we were working a pickup drove up, parked and a man jumped out. He looked somewhat agitated as he asked who we were and if we were going to use a backhoe to dig.

The man was, Michael, who was the lot owner. He calmed down after we explained that we were digging by hand and would restore the area when we were done. He explained his wife had told him she had given permission to some guys to dig and he was afraid we were going to dig all over the lot, making a lot of problems for him when he mowed. Michael seemed to be fine with us digging. He watched us trying to break the concrete for a while and then volunteered to get us a sledge hammer.

He returned in a few minutes with a new sledge. Kenny grabbed hold of the handle and started banging on the cement. Small pieces of concrete flew around the area but not much headway was made in severing the concrete so it could be removed.

Finally, Kenny came up with the idea of hooking one end of a strap to the cement and the other end to the trailer hitch on his pickup. He hoped that it would break a piece loose and he could pull it out.

The idea sounded great but it took several tries before the smaller north piece broke loose so it could be pulled out and left laying beside the hole. The north piece was about four feet long, so its removal gave us enough room to start digging.

We were quickly into dirt mixed with ashes so the digging was fairly easy. Four or five feet down we started finding bottles, mostly machine-made, slick corkers and crowntop beers.

Kenny did another probe and discovered the privy was ten feet deep!

While we were digging, Michael told us about the Santa Fe Trail.

He had actually traveled it from its beginnings in Franklin, Missouri clear to its destination in Santa Fe. He mentioned that the Trail went around any hills where possible. The reason for this was that the large, heavy, wagons, pulled by many head of oxen, would have difficulty climbing the hills and then have a tendency to run away when going down. We were down about seven feet when Kenny yelled out that he had found a Hutch soda bottle!

The yell quickly turned to a groan as he told us that it was a slick bottle with a tombstone slugplate!

By this time it was past lunch time so we decided to take time out to eat. Since there was a restaurant just across the street, we voted to give it a try instead of picking up burgers from the local Dairy Queen.

I’m glad to report that the food was excellent, the service prompt and the prices reasonable. I now understand why it is so popular with the locals.

After lunch we discussed what to do next. There was no way we could dig the outhouse with a six-foot piece of concrete hanging over our heads, just waiting to smash us. It would have to be removed.

This second piece was bigger and much heavier than the first piece.

We tried several times to pull it out, without success, and then our strap broke.

We had thought about pulling it toward the north end but vetoed that idea when Kenny pointed out that if it fell to the bottom we would never get it out.

The plan we finally devised was to leave the concrete where it was now sitting. We would attach what was left of our strap to the rock and hook the other end to Kenny’s truck. The truck would hold it in place while we dug the north end to the bottom. Once we cleared out the end, we would unhook the strap and push the concrete boulder down into the hole. If everything went well it would land on its end and then we could lean the top against the north wall of the privy. We then could dig the south end without fear of being crushed.

With the plan laid out, we started taking the hole deeper.

Michael had been coming and going while the dig was going on.

When he saw the piece of concrete hanging over our heads, I thought he might shut us down. However, he simply said, “Guys if anything goes wrong it’s on you.” To which we agreed that it would be our problem. However, it was a lot safer than it looked.

The concrete was sitting on the dirt, which supported its weight and the pickup kept it from starting to slide. However, we still kept Kenny attaches the strap to the large cement rock. a close eye on it as we dug deeper.

Soon it was difficult to throw out the dirt so we resorted to a bucket and rope to pull out the buckets of fill and dump them on the tarp laid out beside the hole.

Ed was digging, when I heard him yell out, “Wahoo.” Since Ed hardly ever gets excited, about a find, I knew he had found something great.

Ed’s hand was shaking as he handed out a large coffin whiskey flask. I took it from him and saw that it was heavily embossed in a slug plate. It read: PLUMMER & HELLIS/ WHOLESALE/& RETAIL/GROCERS/DENVER, COLO. The bottle was in excellent shape and might be very rare as it was a quart size coffin flask. You don’t see very many quart coffins most are pints and half pints.

After the excitement had died down, Kenny took over the digging.

He hit a layer of bottles and was handing them out so fast, that he decided, it was easier, to have Ed lower the bucket and he would fill it up for Ed to dump away from the hole. The pile of bottles beside the hole continue to grow larger. As we dug, we tried to separate the bottles into two piles, embossed and slicks. The bottle ages were 1890s and 1900s so the biggest pile was slicks.

Kenny read the embossing to us. It said: GEO. SMITH/COUNCIL/ GROVE/KAS. and was the second or third one known. It took longer for Kenny to send the bottle topside this time. Three extremely rare bottles in under five minutes, that’s the kind of record everybody likes to set. I managed to take my photograph of Ed holding the three bottles without having Kenny yell again.

Kenny asked Ed if he wanted to get in the hole for a turn, but Ed told him he could keep digging, just keep the bottles coming. More bottles surfaced, but they were just plain old ordinary bottles and not worthy of any yelling. There was an L.H. THOMAS & CO. CHICAGO ink or paste bottle, a S. GRABFELDER & CO./DISTILLERS/LOUISVILLE, KY. whiskey bottle, a THE L.D. MIX/OIL & NAPTHA CO. with FAVORITE on one side and CLEVELAND, O. on the other side, a CHAMBERLAIN/COLIC CHOLERA AND/DIARRHEA REMEDY, a PISO’S CURE/FOR CONSUMPTION/ HAZELTINE & CO. and a nice AYERS/SARSAPARILLA/ COMPOUND EXT/LOWELL/MASS Finally, Kenny got out of the hole and let Ed take his place. Ed promptly handed up a small embossed drugstore that said: ALLEN’S PHARMACY/ ST. L., a St. Louis bottle. Ed reached the bottom of the outhouse and then enlarged the hole to make sure we had plenty of room for our big rock.

While digging out the fill he found a few more embossed bottles. They were two JAPANESE/GOLD/PAINT, a cone ink, two SALT RHEUM ETC. (side) HOLMES/FRAGRANT/ TRADE MARK FROSTILLA (front) FOR CHAPPED HANDS (other side), a FRAGRANT SOZODONT/FOR THE TEETH/AND BREATH and two MRS. WINSLOW’S/SOOTHING SYRUP. Kenny then pulled out two brown crock jugs, a half gallon and a one gallon. The larger jug even had a pour spout.

He handed out the two jugs and returned to his digging.

It wasn’t long before I heard Kenny yell, in fact most of the neighbors probably heard him, as he waved a small drugstore bottle over his head. “Guys, I got a Council Grove drugstore!” When he calmed down he handed it out to Ed. It was embossed: D.A. STEBBINS/DRUGGIST/COUNCIL GROVE, KAN. and the first drugstore from Council Grove I had ever seen!

While Ed and I were admiring the bottle, we both heard Kenny yell, “I’ve got a hutch soda!” Then he added, “It’s a Burlingame hutch and it’s in good condition!”

The bottle was embossed STAIR & KARR/BURLINGAME/KAS. and was only the second one known!

After Kenny admired the bottle for a while he gave it to Ed. I ask Ed to hold both bottles up, so I could photograph them. While we were doing that Kenny yelled again, “I got another hutch and it’s from Council Grove!”

then, using a pry bar, started the big rock sliding. Everyone held their breath as the six-foot-long rock slid into the hole, ending up standing upright on its end.

Kenny and Ed sat down in the top of the hole and used their feet and legs to push against the rock. After some effort the top of the rock rolled over against the north end of the privy. Our plan had worked exactly like we wanted it to.

We also had the benefits of the big rock being useful as a stepping stone to get in and out of the hole and as a place to stand while pulling buckets. More digging was done in the bottom of hole before daylight ran out and we were forced to quit for the day.

Michael had told us that it would be alright to leave the hole open as long as we strung yellow caution tape around the hole, so no one would fall in during the night.

I found a couple pieces of conduit, for two of the corners and then using Ed’s probe and big bar for the other corners, I rigged up caution tape barrier around the open pit. Kenny and Ed headed home while I headed back to the Cottage Hotel to spend another night.

The next morning, I got a text from Kenny saying he was again running late. When Ed arrived, we decided to eat breakfast at our new favorite restaurant in Council Grove. While we were eating Kenny arrived. He had his 15 year-old-son, Owen, with him who was going to help dig today. After we finished eating we all headed across the street to start the days digging. While yesterday

had been a very nice day, today it was cloudy, windy and chilly.

Owen jumped down in the hole while Kenny started pulling buckets for him. Bottles started to make their appearance, but they were all slicks until Owen held up an embossed whiskey bottle that read: S. GRABFELDER & CO./DISTILLERS/LOUISVILLE, KY. After Owen got out of the hole using Kenny’s handy dandy ladder, I used the same ladder to get into the hole to see if I could uncover any embossed bottles. I found still more slicks as I moved across the bottom of the hole heading for the south wall of the privy.

Finally, I pulled out an embossed drug store bottle. Rubbing off the dirt, I was hoping for a Council Grove, but it read: EKSTRAND’S PHARMACY/SVENSKT APOTHEK/OPP. OPERA HOUSE, SALINA. We had dug a broken Salina, Kansas drugstore earlier in the dig and here was a whole one. Too bad it wasn’t from Council Grove but we’ll still take it.

We dug twenty-five or thirty bottles while cleaning out the south end, but the whiskey and the Salina drugstore were the only embossed bottles found. Kenny checked the last two corners and pronounced the hole done. Now it was time to refill the massive pit.

Everybody worked as quickly as possible and soon we had gotten the hole about two-thirds filled. Now it was time to replace the large piece of foundation we had removed at the beginning of the dig. Ed and Kenny both got their pry bars and working the piece around they man-handled it back into the hole.

Now it was a simple matter to replace the rest of the fill, laying on the tarps, back into the hole.

The dirt was moist so it packed down pretty good so we ended up a little short on dirt. Luckily there was a pile of dirt just off the alley about thirty feet away. We borrowed some, using our buckets to transport it and then Kenny tamped down everything level.

The lot looked pretty good when we were done, especially when you consider how much dirt we had moved. Putting down the tarps certainly helped keep everything neat. Kenny called Michael to let him know we were done. He drove up a few minutes later as we were picking up our tools, folding the tarps, etc.

had picked up a milk bottle case on the lot. It was a good size, so we used it to put some bottles and a jug that we were leaving for Michael.

We thanked Michael for allowing us to dig the outhouse pit for the Midland Hotel and certainly will be back to eat at the restaurant the next time we’re in Council Grove. Kenny had to take Owen to the bathroom (the restaurant was closed) so Ed and I had a discussion about what to do next. We got in Ed’s truck and headed out to take a look around our area.

We made a couple of turns and quickly ended up beside the old building that was the location of the Iowa Hotel in the 1880s.

Ed and I had visited with the owner ten or so years ago, but we had been turned down when we asked for permission to check for and then dig the old privy if we could locate it. Carl, the owner, had told us he knew that old bottles were valuable and he planned on digging the outhouse himself.

We had nothing to lose by checking again so Ed waited in the truck as I went to front door and knocked.

The door was opened by a man and I ask if he was Carl. “No, Carl is inside.” I followed him through the dark house and saw a bearded man, without a shirt, sitting in a chair, he was Carl. I ask Carl about digging the outhouse. He remembered me and admitted he wasn’t in any shape to do any digging, however, he had promised another guy that he could probe and dig the outhouse.

The age of the house was discussed, and Carl thought it went back to 1863. However, Kenny had done research that indicated the building had been constructed in 1880 and had originally been called the Neff House. The name was changed to the Iowa Hotel with an addition added in 1884. During the 1890s the addition was removed and the hotel became a private residence.

We talked for a while and finally Carl said, “I gave the guy permission to dig a long time ago and he has never come by; why don’t you go ahead and do it.”

That was good enough for me. I thanked him and headed out front to tell Ed the good news.

We went back to get my truck and while enroute, I called Kenny to let him know where we would be probing. Soon we were all gathered in front of Carl’s house. Everyone got their probes out of the trucks and headed for the back yard to start a search.

It was very rough with lots of logs and firewood laying around.

We probed for a few minutes before Kenny said that he had found a pit along the back fence. There was another shallow pit with lots of glass in the bottom several feet away along the same fence.

The two holes were started, with Kenny and Ed digging the deeper one while Owen and I dug the other. The hole Owen and I were digging wasn’t very deep and we soon determined that the glass, we were hitting, was just window glass. We decided it probably was just a trash pit.

We refilled it and then went probing for another spot to dig.

I found a spot along the alley, not far from the house, that probed pretty well. Kenny, who was looking at the map, told me that there was a windmill at that spot. I decided I had probably found the well so I continued my probing. Kenny left Ed digging and helped me with the probing. We found a third pit along the north fence line that appeared to be stone-lined.

disappointed to find the five-foot-deep pit had contained only a few 1910 liquor bottles and several bricks in the bottom. They soon had filled the pit and joined Owen and myself.

The stone liner Owen and I were digging- probed about six feet deep, which was shallow for a stone liner. The bottom also had a foot of water in it and to make matters worse the sticky clay in the hole kept sticking to the shovel. We soon decided it was easier to dig until the shovel was loaded with dirt, hand it to a person beside the hole who would give them a freshly cleaned shovel to continue the dig while the dirty shovel was being cleaned.

I was digging into the water and mud when I saw a small drugstore bottle float to the surface. I snagged it with the shovel and lifted it up. It was an 1880’s drugstore bottle but was a slick.

The 1892 Sanborn Map showed the Iowa Hotel had a large addition built along the north side of the existing building. The map also showed a small building attached to the side of the addition. It matched up perfectly with the location of our stone lined pit. Owen and I moved our digging operation to the new pit and started opening it up. Carl came out to see how many bottles we had found. Kenny showed him a couple of slick, 1910, whiskey bottles they had pulled out of their pit, but they were only in the fifty-cent range and not the valuable bottles Carl was hoping we would find. Soon Carl had enough digging and went back in the house where it was warmer.

Kenny took over the digging and started opening up the hole.

This 1887 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map shows the Iowa Hotel with an addition (circled) on the north side of the existing house.

To combat the water problem, a bucket was utilized to dip it out and then dump it away from the hole. The water appeared to be rain water that had collected in the hole, so the level dropped as the digging continued. Darkness was approaching as we continued the dig and find more small, slick drugstore bottles in the bottom of the hole.

We decided that this pit had been dipped. Kenny digging the “sloppy” hole at the Iowa Hotel.

This excerpt from a 1900 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map shows that the addition is gone and the building is now a residence. There weren’t any larger bottles or other debris that you usually find in an outhouse, just the smaller bottles in the corners. Finally, we decided it was time to give up on the hole because it was just too sloppy and we weren’t finding much.

It was too late to start any more pits, so we decided it was time to call it a day I talked to Carl and told him that we’d like to return and continue the search and he said that would be fine. We gathered up our digging tools and loaded up our vehicles. We then moved down to a parking lot on Main Street to do our bottle split. Everybody got some nice bottles to take home, plus we had a great time digging and breaking the winter doldrums. When the weather warms up, we will be back to try another dig and maybe cure another case of cabin fever. Just hope the big rocks stay out of our holes in the future.

The Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (FOHBC) is a non-profit organization supporting collectors of historical bottles, flasks, jars, and related items. The goal of the FOHBC is to promote the collection, study, preservation and display of historical bottles and related artifacts and to share this information with other collectors and individuals.

Federation membership is open to any individual or club interested in the enjoyment and study of antique bottles. The Federation publication, Bottles and Extras is well known throughout the hobby world as the leading publication for those interested in bottles and “go-withs”. The magazine includes articles of historical interest, stories chronicling the hobby and the history of bottle collecting, digging stories, regional news, show reports, advertisements, show listings, and an auction directory. Bottles and Extras is truly the place to go when information is needed about this popular and growing hobby.

Where there’s a will there’s a way to leave Donations to the FOHBC. Did you know the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors is a 501C(3) charitable organization?

How does that affect you? It allows tax deductions for any and all donations to the FOHBC. You might also consider a bequest in your will to the FOHBC. This could be a certain amount of money or part or all of your bottle collection. The appraised value of your collection would be able to be deducted from your taxes. (This is not legal advice, please consult an attorney). The same type wording could be used for bequeathing your collection or part of it, however, before donating your collection (or part of it), you would need the collection appraised by a professional appraiser with knowledge of bottles and their market values. This is the amount that would be tax deductible.

Article Submission Requirements: All BOTTLES and EXTRAS articles or material need to be submitted on CD (preferable) or an email using a compressed (zipped) file. The file must be created by Microsoft Word, Publisher or Adobe N-Design so the editor does not have to retype the work.

High-resolution digital images are our preferred format. Please submit digital images on a CD according to the instructions below. We will accept e-mail submissions only if the image resolution is acceptable. The e-mail or CDs must have only ONE subject per transmission to minimize confusion. Each image must be accompanied by a caption list or other identifying information. Professional-grade equipment is a must to achieve the size and quality image we require. The highest setting on the camera should be used for maximum resolution and file size. Only high quality images will be considered. Please do not send photographic prints or scans of images—the color and quality are generally not up to par compared with digital images or slides scanned by our imaging department. We will consider exceptions for photos that can’t be easily found, such as older historical images. We rarely use slides anymore and prefer not to receive submissions of slides due to the time and liability involved in handling them.
