觀展迴響 Ms Gayel Marquet The Chief of Friends of Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Christchurch This exhibition had me Soaring Through the Sky without having flown to China. Meeting representatives for these works and seeing them up close was to be transported both back and forward in time. Cultural differences and distances faded into my present moment awareness, awe and appreciation for their timeless infinite beauty and significance. What is truly both extraordinary and exemplary is the quality and quantity of exhibitions held at FGS Christchurch and Auckland. In all the years I have been viewing each offering, the Dunhuang exhibition rates as one of the most significant in historical and cultural exchange. Art that flew through the sky to land in my home town and profoundly touch my soul, was a deeply spiritually moving event that seemed to connect me to another place and time.
Ms Deirdre Johns Refrigeration Training Provider I found the exhibition very educational and interesting. It was wonderful to be able to see so much history of both Chinese culture and the spread of Buddhism as it travelled along the Silk Road. Being able to see the rich history of art and devotion linked through the clothing and decoration of the ages displayed in the Art. I enjoyed learning about the early history of Buddhism in China and seeing how people and culture were affected by it. All in all it was a wide view of the times, cultures, fashion, people, religion and culture beautiful displayed in a tribute to its original Caves setting.

First English Tour Deeply Moves Audience at Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery NZ On the morning of February 22, 2025, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland held its first Englishlanguage guided tour. Among the attendees were resin artist Julie Edley and her husband, who were amazed by how the thousand-year-old murals vividly revealed the social scenes of various dynasties, highlighting the richness of traditional culture. During the tour, one woman in a red outfit was so moved by the stories shared that she was brought to tears. It was absolutely touching, she said, To be able to appreciate such brilliant ancient art and hear these powerful stories—especially here, overseas—is truly a rare and fortunate experience.
Sculptor Jon Morgan Deeply Moved by Dunhuang Exhibition and the Serenity of Meditative Buddha Statue Sculptor Jon Morgan, one of the participants in the Art Salon Exhibition, booked a visit to exhibition immediately after receiving an email from Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery. He admitted that he previously knew little about Dunhuang culture, but thanks to the guided tour and documentary film, he walked away with a wealth of new knowledge and appreciation. Jon reflected, At my age, to gain such insight into Buddhist stories and witness the depth of ancient Chinese art and culture through this exhibition—it’s been incredibly rewarding. As a sculptor himself, Jon was especially moved by the Statue of Meditative Buddha, saying, I felt an immediate sense of calm. The sculpting technique is simply extraordinary—it left me in awe.

Artist Couple Moved by Dunhuang Exhibition – Inspired by Ancient Wisdom and Creativity Ron and his wife, artists from Hauraki, work respectively in digital painting and silk fabric painting. They not only enjoy the coffee and vegetarian meals at Fo Guang Shan’s Water Drop Café but also came specially to attend the guided tour of the Dunhuang exhibition, fully engaged throughout the experience. When they heard the story of Prince Mahasattva Jataka, they were deeply moved. To think someone would sacrifice their own life to save another—that’s truly extraordinary, Ron exclaimed. He added, This exhibition is incredibly precious and inspiring. It’s amazing to think that people over a thousand years ago created such an abundance of artwork in caves. Their ability to convey a full story within a single image shows such wisdom—it’s truly remarkable!
Art Teacher Finds Inspiration in Dunhuang—A Journey from Landscape to Mural Arts Galle is an art teacher who previously felt little connection to traditional Chinese landscape painting. It wasn’t until she set foot in China and witnessed its natural scenery firsthand that she truly came to appreciate the grandeur and magnificence captured in Chinese landscapes. She made a special trip to view the ancient Chinese mural exhibition, hoping to further understand the spirit of Eastern art. She noted that in the three exhibited Portraits of Female Donors, the women’s headpieces, makeup, and attire are all different, reflecting not only the cultural characteristics of their respective dynasties but also the distinct artistic styles of different periods, making them highly valuable for study. Galle praised the richness of detail in the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara mural, particularly pointing out that the rocky cliffs depicted in the mural are unlike anything seen in New Zealand. She also admired the decorative patterns around the border, each with its own unique style, and said with enthusiasm that she would definitely return to see the exhibition again.

Ormiston Senior College Students Journey Through Time at Dunhuang Exhibition—Architecture, Aesthetics, and Civilizational Memory Seventy Year 12 architecture students from Ormiston Senior College embarked on a unique cultural and aesthetic journey through the Dunhuang Art Exhibition—a bridge to over a thousand years of history. Students were amazed to discover striking similarities between the ancient architectural features depicted in the murals and the structures of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Auckland. Elements such as the Main Shrine, corner towers, and corridors were vividly illustrated, almost like reawakened vessels of memory, bringing to life the rituals, wisdom, and aesthetics of a longstanding civilisation. Accompanying teacher Jonathan remarked, It was an incredible opportunity to see Buddhist architecture and art dating back over 1,600 years. The students gained valuable insight into the historical context of architecture and design, while also gaining an introduction to Buddhist culture. It has truly been an eye-opening and enriching experience.
Russian Visitor in Awe of Dunhuang Artistry, Plans to Recreate Ceiling Motifs As soon as Lora, a visitor from Russia, entered the gallery, she eagerly asked, Are these paintings from the caves? Clearly fascinated by the Mogao Caves, she described them as absolutely incredible. Throughout the visit, Lora posed numerous questions to the guide: How old are these caves? Are there still new ones being discovered? How were the murals painted onto the walls? Her deep curiosity and engagement stood out. When she encountered the Caisson Ceiling Design with Floral Medallions, she was visibly moved. It’s stunning! This truly captures the essence of Eastern beauty, she exclaimed. Enchanted by the vibrant patterns and colours, she took several photos, saying she planned to slowly recreate the design once I return home.

From Cave Art to Cultural Convergence – The Memory of the Silk Road Touches Heart The 14 members of the Remuera Probus Club shared that the ancient cave art reminded them of how, before the arrival of large-scale European migration, Māori ancestors also lived in natural caves and left behind rock art that still requires protection today. Place names such as Silk Road, Gobi Desert, and Xinjiang felt familiar to the group—some had travelled to China, while others recalled attending a talk in New Zealand last year by the author of The Silk Roads. The speaker had emphasized how the Silk Road stood as a witness to centuries of East–West cultural exchange, leaving a profound impact on civilizations across the globe. The group reflected that the civilization has always grown through interaction. Europe, too, should not forget the origins of its culture. At its core, world culture has long been shaped by mutual influence and the fusion of diverse traditions over millennia.
