PLACES TO GATHER Since the founding of Lawrence, Mass Street (and the immediate surrounding area) has been the town’s public gathering space. Parades, street parties, and festivals take place here. Whether it is the all-ages Get Downtown Block Party, the Pride Parade Concert, the long-established Art in the Park showcase or more … this is the place to be in Lawrence.

JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN Lawrence loves its green spaces, and this pocket park is one of the favorites. A peaceful, serene spot built in honor of the city’s long-term sister-city partnership with Hiratsuka, Japan, this garden is an oasis of calm at the center of Lawrence.

SOUTH PARK Home to some of the city’s favorite annual events such as the Fiddling and Picking Championship, the Rev It Up Hot Rod Street Festival, Juneteenth, summer city band concerts and more. South Park’s pathways, benches, and playgrounds are always open. If you visit during the summer, you might catch one of the city’s outdoor City Band concerts around the park’s iconic centerpiece gazebo. The park’s historic fountain—with its signature lion’s head spouts—was dedicated in 1910 with President Theodore Roosevelt in attendance.

FARMERS MARKETS Feeling in the mood for some food stands or food truck delights? Lawrence Farmers’ Market, the state’s longest continually operating farmers market, features an array of fresh-food vendors every Saturday morning from April to November. From Alexander Vohs’ pastries and macarons to Alejandro Coronado’s Circle S Tamales, there is a vendor offering fresh food for every taste. On Thursday evenings, Cottin’s Hardware hosts a farmers market featuring a rotating food truck vendor.

JUNETEENTH Historically, Lawrence was a refuge for those fleeing enslavement in the years leading up to and during the Civil War. The community honors Black culture, strength, and solidarity at the annual Juneteenth parade and celebration.

LAWRENCE OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS PARADE Held in the first weekend of December, this annual celebration brings together more than 70 horse-drawn wagons, carriages and more, along with dozens of mounted riders for a festive holiday parade down the length of Massachusetts Street.

HASKELL INDIAN ART MARKET AND POWWOW In September, shortly after students return to Haskell Indian Nations University, the school hosts hundreds of verified Native art vendors and presents authentic dances to showcase and celebrate Indigenous heritage.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE The annual celebration of Irish heritage often coincides with the first hints of spring, bringing out hundreds of people for the downtown parade, which is also one of the city’s largest and oldest charity events.

ST. JOHN’S MEXICAN FIESTA Each June, the parish of St. John’s holds this festival of food, music, dancing, and storytelling to honor the community’s Mexican American citizens, many of whom arrived as workers during the railroad construction boom of the late 1800s.

ROBERT J. DOLE INSTITUTE OF POLITICS A research archive and scholarship venue, the center also has an exhibition hall dedicated to the career of the U.S. presidential candidate, senator, and decorated war veteran from Kansas.

TERRITORIAL CAPITAL MUSEUM For a brief period of time in the years leading up to the Civil War, the small town of Lecompton was at the center of national political debates regarding slavery. This museum presents regional history as well as the actions taken by Free State forces to save Kansas from becoming a slave state.

CONSTITUTIONAL HALL A National Historic Landmark, this building was built in 1856 and remains the oldest woodframe building in Kansas still standing at its original location.

Constitutional Hall takes its name from the intense debate during the Bleeding Kansas years, when forces fought at the ballot box and at gunpoint to determine if Kansas would adopt a state constitution as a free or slave state.

BURROUGHS CREEK TRAIL This paved, 1.7-mile section of the Lawrence Loop is dotted with historical markers telling about historical events and people, such as the nearby World War II prisoner-of-war camps and an East Lawrence amusement park whose racism led to an inspired poem by Langston Hughes, who lived briefly in Lawrence as a child. The trail is named in honor of William S. Burroughs, the brilliant but controversial Beat writer who chose Lawrence as his home in his later years.

HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY haskell.edu Located in the southeast section of town, Haskell Indian Nations University is the nation’s only fouryear college with full accreditation specifically for students from federally recognized tribes and boasts a student body representing over 140 tribal nations and Alaska Native villages. The campus sporting events and many of its presentations are open to visitors, as is the annual Indian Art Market, which features authentic Native-made arts and crafts as well as a celebration of traditional dances from Native communities across the United States.

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS ku.edu The main campus of the University of Kansas sits in the center of Lawrence on a steep hill known as Mount Oread. The University of Kansas, more commonly known as KU, is the state’s flagship public university with a graduate and undergraduate enrollment of approximately 28,500 students. CLINTON RESERVOIR, STATE PARK, AND WILDLIFE AREA Locals refer to the entire area as Clinton Lake. The 7,000 acres of water are popular for recreational sailing, fishing, swimming and other water sports. The surrounding land, administered as a state park by the Army Corps of Engineers, features trails for biking, hiking, and horseriding; a sand beach; campsites; and a private marina where you can rent a boat for several hours or a day. Best spot for sunsets! On the southwest edge of town, approach on Clinton Parkway or Highway 10.

HASKELL-BAKER WETLANDS An area of natural and restored wetlands running west from the southern edge of Haskell Indian Nations University to Highway 59. For visitors, the best place to stop is the Baker University Wetlands and Discovery Center with its boardwalk pathways and bird observation points.

Beyond that, 11 miles of trails are open through the wetlands during daylight hours.

RIVER TRAIL Popular for running, walking, and biking, the river trail of North Lawrence is open year-round.

THE ELDRIDGE GHOST The Eldridge Hotel is one of Lawrence’s most historic locations; a centerpiece of Free State resistance during Bleeding Kansas, and one of the main targets when Confederate raiders took over the town in 1863, the Eldridge has numerous reports of ghost sightings, particularly on the 5th floor. Visitors are welcome to visit and see the memorial dedication inside the Campanile, but students who pass through the Campanile before graduation, it is believed, will bring all sorts of bad luck upon themselves.

CARNIVAL OF SOULS Lawrence was one of two locations chosen for the filming of the 1962 cult horror-film classic, Carnival of Souls by Lawrence resident Herk Harvey.
