design psychology EXCHANGE A workshop „design-jam“ bringing the disciplines psychology and design together, how to create an understanding of both, how to communicate the added value, how to build common platforms and how can we collaborate and show our relevance and improve our common performance.

A mix of 20 students from 4 universities from 8 counties instantly collaborated and agreed, that there is a clear serendipity in linking the disciplines of design and psychology, what it needs are new formats and opportunities of training to go for more joint activities.

Interdisciplinary cooperation of Design and Psychology Elisa Kaminski & Christina Pongratz, Sigmund Freud University

The challenge of how two or more disciplines can be brought together and how they can profit from each other, concerns almost everyone who deals with interdisciplinary work. A 3-day workshop on interfaces and collaboration between the disciplines psychology and design showed new insights and clarifications regarding the potential of such interdisciplinary collaborations. The participating psychology and/or design students with a wide range of backgrounds from across Europe talked about questions such as „How can we work together?“ and „What are the benefits of such collaborations?“.

In the following some aspects are presented from the perspective of the meta level. The aspects were developed by observation and analysis of the workshop and can be useful for any psychologists and (graphic)-designers regarding the interdisciplinarity of both disciplines and beyond.

First of all, there is the factor of time, which plays a relevant role, because the time pressure in both disciplines has a different significance. In design it is often a matter of creating something new in a short time or of delivering results quickly. In psychology on the other hand patience is required, especially regarding the work with clients or patients. To achieve long-term success in these, it takes longer periods of time and regular meetings and sessions. At the

workshop it was clear from the beginning that an unspecified target should be achieved within the next three days. To speak figuratively: The goal was only bordered by rough crash barriers, but the road had to be built itself.

The stipulation of a blocked and limited period had the consequence for the participants to make clear the highlights and the abilities of their own discipline to their counterparts within a very short time and try to create connections. By approximating the different approaches and methods of the respective disciplines and the associated reflection, the differences in dealing with the resource time become transparent and facilitates the combination and use of the two disciplines immensely.

On the other hand, the diversity of the group is crucial in several respects.

As a comparison, a jazz jam is suitable. The teamwork succeeds only with trust, spontaneity and mutual involvement in a hitherto unknown spectrum of topics and contents. Both disciplines are very diverse and have a wide range of methods and content; in a good jam the whole is more than the sum of its parts. So therefore, they have in common that from each section within the discipline, the suitable and relevant parts to the current task can be selected. Diversity can also be viewed from a different angle. The classical diversity within the group constellations of psychologists and designers is meant. Different genders, cultural backgrounds and age groups contribute to an even greater differentiation. For example, brainstorming has a much larger pool of ideas as result, thanks to the many influences.

To complement another perspective of diversity, the focus should be on the professional backgrounds of designers and psychologists. Usually there is much more than a „mere academic study“. Through various jobs and internships in different contexts, the students of this workshop have acquired skills that go far beyond the standard content of psychology or design. This means, experiences in catering, business or social areas are not unfamiliar and help the respective mixed teams to an effective and comprehensive approach.

Another exciting point and influencing factor for the success of a project is the prototype. Developing a prototype in the course of the creative process seems inevitable in both disciplines. Often it does not need a sophisticated, detailed plan in advance. Rather at least guidelines serve the orientation and based on a first draft can be worked on the concreteness of a thought. This prototype can already be manifest itself in the sense of a thing that vividly presents a draft or as an idea that has not yet been fully elaborated in the minds of psychologists or designers. In context of

design these prototypes are mostly detailed ideas. In psychology at least in some areas, such as psychological organizational consulting and development, concrete plans based on time, information and monetary aspects must serve as a basis. In conclusion it can be stated that a development of the prototype serves to rethink one‘s own perspective and allows the opportunity to present the idea to others in order to reach the same level of knowledge that is essential for a constructive and creative development.

When working in teams, social effects occur. These can be consciously used to support the team dynamics or to move in a certain direction.

This requires the use of the meta perspective, otherwise there can be no awareness of what is happening in the group and the reflection does not find the actual necessary space. To illustrate what social psychological phenomena can occur, the suspension bridge effect is mentioned. In the context of group work this means that people, as soon as they are exposed to a supposedly dangerous situation, perceive the other people in the direct environment differently. In other words: The connection to the team members will be more strengthened and deeper and there will be different emotions to the colleagues than before. It is not for nothing that teambuilding activities such as climbing or games of skill, where something can be achieved, work. This means if the team dynamics in a group are going in an undesirable direction or the motivation is not that what would be needed for a creative process, social experimentation could be helpful.

Shared experiences in the team outside the usual project framework put the actual reason for working in a different light. Suddenly the introverted colleague is experienced as a calming and balancing person who contributes to the grounding of the group; this as an example. There are more social-psychological phenomena than expected; often a sharpening of awareness promotes perception. Psychologists are trained to use such experiments consciously and to initiate group processes constructively and productively. Design is about giving a face to the whole and figuratively processing it in order to draw more attention to where it is needed.

An attempt to generalize at the end: The know-how of the designers, this means the „How something works?“, combined with the perspective of the psychologists who are dealing with the „Why something works?“ in this workshop, show exciting findings that can be useful for working in projects and teams; but above all, make the process of outcome easier and at the same time enrich it.

Psychology students in Austria at the Sigmund Freud University made a field research about behaviour in different coffee shops; the McCafe and a normal Austrian coffee shop. The result was,that the environment and the setting has an affect on the behaviour and how long people stay there.

Process The challenge of merging philosophy, psychology and design into one and creating a business with the emphasis on different philosophies and a way to make them understandable to the society.

Process – potentional business Creating a cafe that tells its visitors about different philosophies – in our case – Nihilism, with easy to understand definitions and visual elements.

“Nihil“ means nothing in latin, meanwhile blank is a synonym for nothing.

Potentional products Applying the color study from psychology, we used two colors to represent the two extremes of this philosophy.

Dark red (passion) – everything Pale blue (silence) – nothing.

Playing on more of the sarcastic side of this rather dark philosophy, we’re using objects and items to represent it.

Outcome and extensions

Psychology and design are intertwined in a lot of different ways. We want to make the connections of these two disciplines more accessible for everyone.

As a first step the aim of this project is to reach students and give them a chance to expand their horizon and change their way of thinking.

To inform students about the upcoming design and philosophy workshop, we will reach them at the universities and coffee shops using posters, stickers, and coffee mugs advertising the event.

On the first day our task was to exchange our thoughts both on design and psychology. We came to conclusion that they cannot exist without each other. Therefore, we came up with story of Designeo & Psychologette and acted it out as a play, where they both would be so much less without each other.

How design & phychology can help a philosopher?

Doctor Why Our task was to come up with a philosophy company, but the idea itself is a paradox.

First, we were thinking the background our task, about who philosophers are and what they do in modern word. Because philosophers are always questioning everything, instead of bringing solutions, we ended up questioning the problems of nowadays society. The most discussed theme was the feeling of no purpose. Today we are not following as much religion and have no same kind of meaning in life as before.

People are filling their life with materialism and other kind of remedies. This can easily be seen in small towns with little options for people to express themselves or choose future that they dream for themselves.

Our solution was a service called Doctor Why. He could be contacted by anyone who thinks that his or hers town is falling into existential crisis. He remains anonymous and can be paid in bitcoins. Doctor Why would then appear over the night and make wall art over the city, put little stickers to bread you buy from supermarket, show philosophical movies on TV and interrupt your internet shopping by messages that makes you think.

The Wind of Change We were asked to come up how we could affect certain people with Design Psychology. As our target we chose Mr. President. We would tell him how he could improve his communicational and presence skills with our tools. As an outcome the president would be more accountable, attracted, trustworthy, respected, have more power, resonates in modern society and comes closer to his people.

He would start with updating his wardrobe into more modern clothes and have his own clothing brand. Then he would change his communication skills stating from body language to rhetorical skills. He would also pay attention to his social media presence in Instagram and YouTube and have his own tv-show. He would need to be more humorous and serious at the same time. For cool content creation he could visit popular events and show that he is president of all the people.

A philosophy business?

We had the task to develop the concept for a philoshophy business.

The challenge being that philosophy is not typically thought of as a commidity to be easily packaged and sold as a product.

Epicure: brand philosophy agency Our philosophy business is Epicure, an agency that specialises in matching companies with existing philosophies to help them build their company strategy and vision. The name Epicure is inspired by the philosopher Epicurus, who dedicated his whole life to discovering the key to happiness. In the same way, Epicure strives to help companies to achieve lasting happiness and unified vision according to some positive philosophy.

Discover your philosophy Epicure curates a company philoshophy based on its current needs and ambitions based on existing philosophies. As a premium service, Epicure can create an entirely new philosophy.

Design + Psychology We incorporated design and psychology in Epicure in terms of its appraoch to clients. The quality of the products would of course come from the expertise in philosophy. Meanwhile, the ability and create corresponding products would be based on principles of design and psychology.
