Reaction/Reazione

Il tema, volutamente ampio e interpretabile in diversi modi, è stato scelto a partire da una serie di considerazioni sull’osservazione della realtà sociale e sulla necessità di modificarla, reagire, diventando parte attiva di un processo sociale che si vuol modificare dall’interno.

Reaction/Reazione

è un concetto astratto che va declinato poi progettualmente, a partire dall’individuazione di un problema al quale si vuol dare come risposta una possibile soluzione. Il design lavora in tale direzione (problem solving) e la sua applicazione in un contesto sociale come il nostro può generare nei partecipanti al workshop la capacità di osservazione, di reazione, di intervento, adoperando, fuori dai canonici contesti didattici e in una condizione di insegnamento misto, gli strumenti della disciplina progettuale.

We started from an image, a colour and a shape which, independently, drove us to a a need of a lot of people, but not communicated too much.

In Bologna, going into the passenger’s traffic, we met Mario who expressed his main need: we have so much to share, ideas, projects, but we don’t have a way to do it, virtual or physical. So, from the bookseller (Mario) who unveils his passion for art and galleries, our process took place: we moved from the perspective that only the physical place promotes the sharing, on behalf of a more real REACTION between people who have same interests to exchange, so our proposal of a “virtual” platform was born. In this way, sharing your own idea or artistic project took on the characteristics of a game, where every user turns himself on a kind of card, and then he can interchange himself with some others, improving its contacts and making real its most intimate projects.

The REACTION starts from the individual himself who, with a more sensitive tool, decides to realize his personal project, and to express himself sharing.

Siamo partite da un’immagine, un colore e una forma che, in maniera autonoma, ci hanno guidato verso un bisogno avvertito da molti, ma poco comunicato. A Bologna, addentrandoci nel traffico dei passanti, siamo arrivate a Mario, attore di questo bisogno: abbiamo molto da condividere, idee, progetti, eppure non abbiamo un modo per farlo, virtuale o fisico che sia. Così, dal libraio (Mario) che svela la sua passione per l’arte e per le gallerie, il nostro processo ha avuto inizio: spostandoci dalla prospettiva che sia il luogo fisico a favorire la condivisione, a favore di una più reale reazione tra persone che hanno molte risorse da scambiarsi, è nata la nostra proposta di una piattaforma “virtuale”. In essa, condividere una propria idea o progetto artistico assume i connotati di un gioco, dove ogni utente si trasforma in una carta, e può scambiarsi con molte altre, aumentando i contatti e rendendo concreti i suoi più intimi progetti.

La reazione parte dall’individuo stesso che, dotato di uno strumento più sensibile, decide di realizzare un suo progetto, e di esprimersi condividendo.

EXPLORE In this first phase, we sought the contact with people, focusing on listening for attempt to shape their need. Starting from our image, the “red factory” has been emerging in every single mind as the mythical factory of Andy Warhol, materializing in a “virtual” place where everyone can express himself freely and share ideas and personal projects.

From this found desire of sharing, we tried to give an instrument that could create a awareness between people, helping them to rediscover this and, at the same time, to rediscover themselves.

In questa prima fase, abbiamo ricercato il contatto con le persone, privilegiando l’ascolto per tentare di dare una forma al loro bisogno.

Partendo dalla nostra immagine, la “red factory” si è andata delineando nella mente di ognuno come la mitica factory di Andy Warhol, concretizzandosi in un luogo “virtuale” dove esprimersi liberamente e condividere idee e progetti personali. Noi, da quel desiderio di condivisione riscontrato, abbiamo tentato di fornire uno strumento che potesse creare una consapevolezza tra le persone, aiutandoli a riscoprirla e, allo stesso tempo, a riscoprirsi.

Mario works as a bookseller in Bologna, but he has a strong passion for art and art galleries in general. He would like to share his passion with someone else in Bologna, and maybe to create a real way of collaboration. For us, he wants someone to REACT to his ideas.

Mario lavora in una libreria a Bologna ma ha una passione per l'arte e gli spazi espositivi.Vorrebbe condividere questa sua passione con qualcuno di Bologna e magari creare una reale collaborazione. Pensiamo egli voglia qualcuno con cui REAGIRE a questo bisogno.

--- STARTING POINT for Mario we want to find a way to share ideas

MAKE Our proposal comes up as a cards’ game, where every card belongs to one user, and the exchange follows interests and possible collaborations that users want to fix. Every infopoint, adhering at the project, it will provide users with a kit based on a deck of 40 cards to pin up contacts, and one brooch, as a symbol of attendance to the project; then, every user will post its proposal of collaboration in a wall, which is present inside the infopoint. As it happens in social networks, a network of utents and interests in common could be created, aiming to curiosity and game.

La nostra proposta nasce quindi come un gioco delle carte, dove ognuna appartiene ad un utente, e lo scambio segue gli interessi e le possibili collaborazioni che gli utenti vogliono stabilire. Ogni infopoint aderente al progetto, fornirà agli utenti un kit composto da un mazzo di 40 carte dove appuntare i contatti, e una spilla, come simbolo di appartenenza al progetto; inoltre, ogni utente potrà pubblicare la sua proposta di collaborazione in una bacheca presente all’interno del posto. Come accade nei social network, si genera una rete di contatti che unisce persone e interessi in comune puntando sulla curiosità e sul gioco.

CHECK To cause a REACTION is more than trigger a contrary action to someone; before, we have to understand if the interest we want to awake already exists. Actually, testing our project, it has been interesting that, proposing to fill in the profile-card, a lot of people already desired writing their interests and, why not, sharing with people similar in mind. Although this didn’t mean an immediate proposal to hang on the wall, reactions to our project have been positive and sensible to the idea. Mostly, the fact that impressed us has been to discover that the presence of many digital platforms have not fulfilled the desire to communicate, and often the human interaction between people is a strong need which keeps on being not underestimated.

Provocare una REAZIONE è molto più di innescare un’azione contraria in qualcuno; dobbiamo prima capire se l’interesse che deve essere risvegliato esiste già nella persona. Ed effettivamente, testando il nostro progetto, è stato interessante notare che, proponendo di compilare la carta-profilo, in molti era già forte questo desiderio di scrivere i propri interessi, e, perchè no, di condividerli con persone che potessero comprenderli. Sebbene questo non implicasse necessariamente una proposta immediata da appendere in bacheca, le reazioni al nostro progetto sono state positive e sensibili all’idea. Soprattutto, il dato che ci ha sorprese è stato scoprire che la presenza delle numerose piattaforme digitali non ha colmato il desiderio di comunicare, e che spesso condividere direttamente con l’altra persona, è un bisogno umano che continua a non essere sottovalutato.

Topic Reaction is the theme on which was asked to develop a project, linked to the identity of a particular context or entity, that can arouse a particular reaction in those who use it. It is composed of two distinct but linked phases: a first part of action or the design and implementation of the project, and a second part of the reaction, trying to keep track of interactions experienced.

Tema Reazione è il tema sul quale è stato chiesto di costruire un progetto, legato all’identità di un particolare settore o entità, che possa suscitare una particolare reazione in chi ne usufruisce, componendosi quindi di due parti distinte ma collegate: una prima parte di azione, ovvero di ideazione e messa in atto del progetto, e una seconda parte di reazione, cercando di tenere traccia delle interazioni vissute.

The interviews showed that the city is not perceived as a single entity but as a productive diverse set of labs, producers of ideas and values, but where the shops (or stores) are sometimes poorly organized and joined together.

The design process, then, start from the definition of a common identity for all the small shops of the historic center of Bologna, in order to exploit them in their professionalism and historicity without ever losing sight of their varied and profound differences.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;...we need to enhance the identity of bolognaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s particular shopsâ&#x20AC;?

Dalle interviste è emerso che la città non viene percepita come un’unica entità produttiva ma come un insieme variegato di laboratori produttori di idee e di valori, dove però i negozi (o botteghe) sono talvolta poco organizzati e uniti tra loro.

Il processo progettuale, quindi, parte dalla definizione di un’identità comune per tutti i piccoli esercizi commerciali del centro storico di Bologna, al fine di valorizzarli nella loro professionalità e storicità senza mai perdere di vista le loro variegate e profonde differenze.

Personal network Lady Daniela, the woman of the printshop, everiday is connected with other people and shops by her business or needs. For example, the simple act of taking a coffee generates a link between her and a caffeteria.

Collective network Even if are not present organized groups of traders united by common ideologies, there is however a strong network of involontary connections.

Each person has a chain of daily habits that automatically binds to the butcher, the greengrocer or friend at the bar next to the shop: the needs of individuals are carriers of bonds that unite people who apparently believe that they have nothing in common.

Also need to bind values and habits that lead to the choice of certain services over others.

Rete collettiva Pur non essendo presenti gruppi di commercianti uniti da ideologie comuni, è comunque presente una forte rete involontaria di connessioni.

Ogni persona ha una catena di abitudini quotidiane che automaticamente la lega al macellaio di fiducia, al fruttivendolo amico o al bar vicino alla bottega: le necessitĂ e i bisogni delle singole persone sono quindi portatori di legami che uniscono soggetti che solo apparentemente credono di non avere nulla in comune.

Al bisogno si legano inoltre valori e abitudini che portano alla scelta di determinati servizi piuttosto che altri.

The box concept The box is a manifest: a container to generate dialogue and collaboration between two different realities that are not incompatible.

The shop of art prints “The Tarlatana,” taken as a reference, is linked with a different reality as a pastry shop in the historic center of Bologna. The art prints of Mrs. Daniela, seemingly irreconcilable with other product categories, have adapted perfectly to the packaging of pastry products, in this way has been shown to the shopkeeper how to create new interactions where there are not jet.

Il concept della scatola La scatola è un manifesto: un contenitore per generare dialogo e collaborazione tra due realtà diverse ma non incompatibili.

Il negozio di stampe d’arte “La Tarlatana”, preso come riferimento, viene messo in relazione con una realtà differente quale una pasticceria del centro storico di Bologna. Le stampe d’arte della signora Daniela, solo apparentemente inconciliabili con altre categorie merceologiche, si sono adattate alla perfezione all’inserimento nel packaging dei prodotti della pasticceria: in questo modo è stato dimostrato alla bottegaia come sia possibile creare nuove interazioni laddove ancora non ci sono.

Tool “a tál dég!” is a communication campaign focused on the rediscovery of Bologna’s commercial excellence.

The claim, colorful way of saying bolognese with meaning “Oh, I tell you!” (Intensifier of a conversation that reflects the common thought), was chosen to be ironic about the origins of Bologna’s commercial activities that have to be highlighted.

Strumento “a tál dég!” è una campagna di comunicazione mirata a riscoprire la rete delle eccellenze commerciali bolognesi.

Il claim, colorato modo di dire bolognese con significato “Ah, te lo dico!” (rafforzativo di una conversazione che rispecchia il pensiero comune), è stato scelto per ironizzare sulle origini bolognesi delle attività che si vogliono mettere in luce.

Stickers Some paper products have been produced to obtain an easy and fast diffusion of the campaign. First of all the stickers in which the claim is clearly visible, and is flanked by a series of sentences that lead back to the concept of local identity, such as idioms and daily phrase. Some stickers are not provided with sentences but, rather, of simple white lines, on which people are asked to write their personal “everyday phrase,” so interacting directly with the project. Some stickers were placed at strategic points of the city center, occasionally taking advantage of existing images and contexts to our intervention and then interacting with a track already left by others.

Adesivi Sono stati realizzati alcuni prodotti cartacei di facile e veloce diffusione della campagna. Primi tra tutti gli stickers in cui è ben visibile il claim, ed è affiancato da una serie di frasi che riconducono al concetto di identità cittadina, come ad esempio modi di dire e frasi quotidiane. Alcuni stickers non sono provvisti di frasi ma, bensì, di semplici linee bianche, su cui le persone sono chiamate a scrivere la loro personale “frase quotidiana”, interagendo così in maniera diretta con il progetto. Alcuni adesivi sono stati posti in punti strategici del centro città, occasionalmente sfruttando immagini e contesti preesistenti al nostro intervento e interagendo quindi con una traccia già lasciata da altri.

Some shopkeepers have become Bolognese testimonial campaign with posters posing for photographs or posting them in the windows.

Mini manifesti Sono stati realizzati dei piccoli manifesti con le stesse caratteristiche degli stickers. Alcuni negozianti bolognesi sono diventati testimonial della campagna posando con i manifesti per delle fotografie o affiggendoli nelle vetrine.

Tumblr There is a tumblr in which to collect the testimonies and images of public reactions to the sight of the marks left around the city. Anyone can contribute.

Tumblr È stato creato un tumblr in cui raccogliere le testimonianze e le immagini delle reazioni del pubblico alla vista dei segni lasciati in giro per la città. Chiunque può contribuire.

Reactions Since the project was based on the idea of provoking a reaction in those who were interacting with stickers and posters, time of relationship with people was crucial: in the center of the city there was a dialogue with traders and pedestrians, as well as with the store from which the project started. The reactions that emerged are very mixed: the owner of the print shop was so struck by the idea of re-evaluate the individual identity towns, but expressed some concerns. Other people, especially encountered by chance and curious sight of posters and stickers, you are shown convinced and interested in the project.

Reazioni Dato che il progetto si basava sull’idea di suscitare una reazione in chi si trovava ad interagire con gli adesivi e i manifesti, è stato fondamentale il momento di relazione con le persone: nella zona del centro città è stato cercato il dialogo con commercianti e semplici passanti, oltre che con il negozio da cui è partito il progetto. Le reazioni che riscontrate sono state molto contrastanti: la proprietaria del negozio di stampe è stata sì colpita dall’idea di rivalorizzare le singole identità cittadine, ma ha espresso alcune perplessità. Altre persone, soprattutto incontrate per caso e incuriosite dalla vista dei manifesti e degli adesivi, si sono mostrate convinte e interessate al progetto.

Nevertheless Marco has the opportunity to write a goodbye letter.

I liked:

The feeling of discovering similarities and differences between all of us slowly by slowly, the sense of curiosity that was in the air and the fresh energy of the participants the jam session with Martin and the nice interaction the spread from the reciprocal discovering of the perspective of each other. And the effect generated by the domino, mainly on us, on the participants, and on the popcorn!

The mix of people was excellent by origin (city), training background, skills, … a real richness for the workshop. the different points of view and working to learn how to synthesize too complex ideas, better to much ideas Lavorare direttamente con le persone e per loro. progettare in gruppo condividendo anche discipline diverse / Facing directly people, working with them and for them. Building a project within the group by sharing different disciplines Collaborate with people with different skills; work in team; create a project from “nothing”; meet new people with same passions L’atmosfera di forte collaborazione creatosi durante i 5 giorni di lavori / The mood of strong collaboration that has been created during the 5 days Team work experience; psychological approach, so different than the university approach; never take anything for granted

Sharing different skills and knowing different ways of work Martin and all the people; especially the first part of the ws; the pattern, the studio, the ambient The fact that we started and finished something; challenging myself in order not to stop at the first thought Everything: the pills i received from the teachers, the city I had to face with, the people I met at the ws, and the new abilities Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve earned I really liked working in team, especially with people that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never met beforeâ&#x20AC;ŚI think that being joined by psychologists was a strong point, and Martin has been super!

Everything! This made me think …

How much the boarder between “meaning construction” and “action” could be both powerful or empty depending on our attitude and approach. It was inspiring..

The time pressure in doing activities, the (strategic) blindness of this process, which may be effective if well guided.

Also, the concrete power of a good “espresso” in the generation of meaning and (re)actions.

That a starting session to provide common tools. especially about user research and project management so that we can feel that everyone is on the same page would be a good idea for a next workshop. sometimes we complicate our life with too many thoughts and that makes us blind to see the simplest/ best solution Abbiamo l’abitudine a vedere le cose più complesse di quello che sono. è possibile vedere il problema da una nuova prospettiva / We tend to see things as more complex as they really are, it is possible to see the problem from another and new perspective that I have some technical limits, I mean work with Ai, Id, Ps, so I would like to improve this now

che queste siano occasioni di formazione professionale e personale da ricercare il più possibile / These learning opportunities both on the professional and personal sides are to be done as much as possible the importance of the feedback from the audience That there isn’t a specific kind of doing things and designing projects, so everyone could give an improvement to existing things about the projectual project path and how to improve a reaction first in myself and in the others The continuous change of perspective, sometimes was confusing About I’ve designed until today, and how I’ll design starting from tomorrow That it’s really important never stop or never be too sure about a first idea. I didn´t like:

The “random” starting point of the process.. I probably would have preferred to start by an interactive activity or brainstorming game (warning: psychologist speaking ;) Sometimes too pushed in terms of “doing”, sometimes I would have preferred a little discussion on the framework of meaning... it’s my professional perspective that is speaking. we need more coaching when some member of the group is passive, a group of 4 persons is too small forse il gruppo da 4 è un po il limite per un lavoro complesso come quello proposto / The group made by 4 people may be a limitation when dealing with the complex project (in the sense of process) we were asked to work on Maybe sometimes too much challenge, and I felt the pressure of put together too many different points of view l’impostazione troppo focalizzata sul campo a fronte di una parte teorica che avrei preferito si alternasse più di frequente / The format was too much focused on the “on the field” activities, I would have preferred more on theory during the five days

The lack of informations about “ID” before the project: a lot of students never heard nothing about it The chaotic organization and maybe the not clear moments in which anyone knows what we had to do everything was really fine “Don’t like” is too much, maybe the first part of the ws was too “talky” I mean, sometimes words are too confusing The weather (Being without my laptop) The weather the last day!

with real business examples and assist with a plan-B The strategic and pragmatic approach that we (as CFI) have on promoting change: we work in generating change mainly by the use of words and actions, but the generation of concrete artifacts and platforms has a huge impact in constructing realities.

The powerful tool of visual artifacts has always been underestimated in my work mainly full of words.. there‘s a huge path to discover in this sense the real life/work :) ad un approccio metodologico al progetto, ma anche ad un modo di affrontare le questioni quotidiane / to a methodological approach to the project, and to a way of dealing with daily issues as well The idea of making some of my daily studies concrete – my future work and my personal experience The good way to approach a project, because I think that in schools there isn’t a good preparation for designing projects in a short time, but just the “best” way to do that

all my study: the format was so complete in the part of the researching and thinking about the needs Everything i learned will be useful for me because even if i’m not sure what I am :) I know how I want to do things, How to design My work i’m gonna produce from tomorrow, this ws gave me the energy and the consciousness to start my experience out in the job’s world My professional approach The job I’m doing the way to investigate about the briefing and all the possible solutions Penso che questo metodo progettuale possa applicarsi veramente a tutto quello che facciamo / I think that this method really could be applied to everything we do

Probably, having more time, it would be great to plan the contact with the context, the city and the possible stakeholders preparing more tools and hints..

Framework definition and goal negotiation, especially as concerns the aims of the workshop. I understand that it is oriented on realizing, but I think that giving some directions and borders regarding the area in which the workshop will move would be of help. the diverge-converge gym can be very hard and painful if you are not used to. Giving more tools and tips to mage that could help to feel less anxious more time for practice, less for preparing presentation avrei preferito più tempo per indagare luoghi/bisogni e pensare a possibili soluzioni, e meno da dedicare a presentazioni intermedie / I would have preferred more time for exploring places/needs, to think out other possible solutions, and less time given to halfway presentations I think it was complete from every points of view avrei preferito, come già detto al punto 3, una parte più ampia di esposizione di casi e progetti già affrontati; capisco però che sia una mia esigenza molto personale dettata dal fatto che il workshop non è forse più una mia modalità di apprendimento / I would have preferred a wider part dedicated to show other case histories and projects; I know it’s just a personal need, maybe because the workshop format is not a way of learning where I feel confortable anymore

– I think that thers’s no much more to say because this was an experience to live and it really depends on the nature and skills of the single person who participates First part, the exploration, if the ws is for designers it doesn’t need so much time for the production, but it needs more time and attention in the part of the project, target and needs finding The checking part was too short, but maybe was influenced by our choice Nothing, the only thing I can say is that my brain is too slow :) :) Managing data and how to organize them Non conoscendo bene l’inglese avrei fornito qualche sostegno in più. ma è andato tutto bene! / If I could speak english better I might have been more responsive sometimes. But everything was fine!

What I would like to mention …

By the way I think that the format is amazing. The most valuable aspect is the capability of the coach to enlighten engagement and commitment.

Sorry for the english The organization was really good I think ;) Please, maybe would be really really helpful and fun to know before about the other participants (in order to organize together for the accommodation, transports,..). I went alone and I had to get a room quite far..
