the F.O.E. awards grants at the International Convention to a variety of organizations across the U.S. and Canada who work tirelessly in various areas of medicine to provide aid to the general population. Thanks to the Eagles, individuals in every corner of North America are seeing medical progress like never before.

On August 17, representatives of the Vermont State Fraternal Order of Eagles formally presented the F.O.E.’s International Convention grant for $30,000 to the University of Vermont Medical Center. The University cares for approximately 300 patients each year, covering more than 1,000 visits. Officially certified as an Education Recognition Program (ERP) by the American Diabetes Association, Vermont helps thoroughly educate children who are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and their families. These two-day training sessions with hospital staff are used to teach methods for proper care and maintenance and help set the course for living a healthly life with diabetes. Contributions from the F.O.E. not only help the children of Vermont, but children throughout the world as the progress made by University of Vermont doctors is shared in leading medical journals and beyond. “Vermont may be a tiny state but we are leading the way in redesigning medical education and designing a healthcare plan to keep our citizens healthy,” University hospital representative Ruth Henry said in an email to the Grand Aerie. “Each time I see you all, I’m reminded that our organizations have the same mission... People Helping People.” convention

Diabetes RESEARCH CENTER A Message from Dr. E. Dale Abel

Exciting new research was recently published in the EMBO Journal by FOEDRC Director, Dale Abel. The study suggests that gently stressing muscle metabolism could help prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes. The study was carried out on mice where the team found triggering a type of metabolic stress increased levels of a hormone called fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21). The findings showed the animals were completely protected from obesity and diabetes. Interestingly, in the mice which had already started to develop the condition, the hormone reversed the diabetes and helped them return to a normal weight with normal blood sugar levels. In a press release, Dr. Abel was quoted, “There is a biological phenomenon known as hormesis where a little bit of stress can be a good thing,” In other words, “there is probably a sweet spot ‘hormetically’, where creating a little bit of muscle stress diabetes research center

could be of metabolic benefit.” The metabolic stress process involved the team applying genetic engineering to the mice, which reduced levels of a type of protein called OPA1 in the animal’s muscles. Interestingly, the altered mice also were completely protected from the weight gain and glucose intolerance that normally develop in mice as they age or when they eat a high-fat diet. Moreover, the research team showed that reducing OPA1 levels in muscle, after mice had become obese and diabetic, reversed these problems – normalizing body weight and reversing glucose intolerance even though the high fat diet continued. The innovative results of this study are being recognized worldwide. The research was funded in part by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, both part of the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. Visit the News page at foe.com at the first of every month to read the latest DRC Update from Dr. Abel.

DEAR BROTHERS & SISTERS OF THE FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES: Thank you for your continued support and commitment to diabetes research. Here within The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa, we have been honored to receive recognition far and wide as we build an impressive interdisciplinary team that is producing a strong body of advances in diabetes research. Over the past year, our faculty members have continued to produce high-quality research that is being published in prominent national and international journals. Inside this report and on our website, you can read more about this impactful research by our members. We’re also proud to add more excellent faculty members to our already strong research team. We continue to welcome talented investigators who hail from research universities in California, Virginia, Massachusetts and the Carolinas. The recent months have included the addition of five faculty members with backgrounds in pharmacy, pharmacology and endocrinology and metabolism. In late September, we also proudly installed Dr. Chris Adams as the FOEDRC Chair in Diabetes Research and Dr. Yumi Imai as FOEDRC Professor in Diabetes Research. Last but not least, our center continues to be favored by grant funders. We were proud to receive a perfect score for our submission to the NIH requesting a five-year, $2.02 million training grant. This welcome funding from the National Institutes of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases will be used to advance the training and mentoring of up to six of our fellows in diabetes research. It will deepen our scientific knowledge in untangling the complexities of the mechanisms of diabetes. As always, we welcome your interest in this journey of discovery. We recognize your past efforts to achieve lofty fundraising objectives and your current efforts to stay informed about The FOEDRC’s crucial work. Sincerely,

E. Dale Abel, M.D., Ph.D.

John B. Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research Director, The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Reseach Center at the University of Iowa

LATEST UPDATES ACCOLADES Leading members of The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center team have been honored with national and international recognition over the past year. We applaud their accomplishments and the hard work of all FOEDRC team members! KAMAL RAHMOUNI, PHD

Professor of Pharmacology

In September 2016, Dr. Kamal Rahmouni received the 2016 Paul Korner Award from the International Society of Hypertension in Seoul, Korea. The award recognizes Dr. Rahmouni’s contributions to the understanding of the brain’s role in regulating blood pressure, particularly in individuals with diabetes and obesity.

E. DALE ABEL, MD, PHD FOEDRC Director

In addition to his research about the ways the heart is damaged by diabetes, Dr. Abel is leading the Center by example by presenting in the UI and medical communities about diabetes. He presented “The Cardiovascular System as a Target of Insulin Action” at the 3rd Annual Diabetes Symposium at Indiana University in August 2017. Closer to home, he received the UI Distinguished Mentor Award and will be the keynote speaker of the 2018 UI Presidential Lecture next February.

DARYL GRANNER, MD

FOEDRC Founding Director Emeritus In June, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) presented the 2017 Albert Renold Award for Mentorship and Diabetes Research to Dr. Daryl Granner, our Center’s founding director. “Dr. Granner’s contributions to the mentorship and the development of future diabetes researchers has helped to ensure that bright young minds will continue to make headway in improving the lives of people with diabetes,” said the ADA’s President of Medicine and Science Alvin C. Powers, MD. “He is a stalwart in diabetes research. I am deeply grateful for the groundwork which he laid in putting in place the structure and framework around which the FOEDRC has been built and for his ongoing commitment to our success,” says Dr. Abel.

GRANT AWARDS The problem of age-related muscle weakness and atrophy, which is also common in diabetic individuals, is getting a much closer look thanks to a five-year, $2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This July, Dr. Chris Adams, Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, received the award to study this problem. His lab’s preliminary studies identified the transcription factor ATF4 in mice, which is the first example of a protein that is required for the loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, strength and endurance exercise capacity during aging. Mice lacking ATF4 are resistant to age-related muscle weakness and atrophy. CHRISTOPHER M. ADAMS, MD, PHD

Professor of Internal Medicine - Endocrinology and Metabolism Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics

In addition, Dr. Wei Bao was awarded a $419,000 grant from the NIH to study new ways to predict the risk of gestational diabetes. Dr. Bao will investigate factors in plasma called microRNAs and their value in predicting gestational diabetes. The project will use plasma samples as well as existing data from the Maternal Fetal Tissue Bank at the University of Iowa. WEI BAO, MD, PHD

Assistant Professor, Epidemiology

PUBLICATIONS & MEDIA FOEDRC investigators have been very active in publishing their research in national and international medical journals. The news of their findings has also been featured on websites such as ScienceDaily.com, Medicalxpress. com and Eurekalert.org. • • • • •

Learning How Your Money Helps

The Grand Aerie Support You Operating an organization the size of the Fraternal Order of Eagles requires a substantial amount of resources. Those resources are primarily provided through the biannual Per-Capita Tax paid by each Aerie and Auxiliary to the Grand Aerie.

the F.O.E. Charity Foundation and graphs breaking down exactly where the Grand Aerie funds come from, and what that money is used to do for our members. Below each graph will be a breakdown of the various items which make up each category. For example, Travel & Meeting Costs made up 11.81% of the Grand Aerie’s expenses last year. Of that amount, 30% was spent on Convention-related travel while just 11.8% was used for all Board Meeting-related travel throughout the year.

The Per-Capita Tax made up 77.03% of all Grand Aerie income for the 20162017 fraternal year. These funds enable us to provide you with dedicated office support, fund our annual International Convention, support all agent and assignment-related travel and expenses and support all of our internal and external marketing and membership efforts.

The Grand Aerie works hard to ensure your funds are put to good use and we hope the information on the following pages further proves our efforts to help the F.O.E. operate in a logical and efficient manner on your behalf.

On the following pages, you will see totals for all of our received charitable donations, charitable grants issued by accounting

Financials A look ahead to the 2017-2018 fiscal year • The Grand Aerie continues to operate within the budget approved by the delegation. Per-Capita Tax will remain at $6.00 in November 2017. • While we opened the DRC and fulfilled our $25,000,000 commitment to Iowa in 2014, our goal is incomplete. In a previous year, to meet our commitment, the Grand Aerie borrowed $2,100,000 for the Charity Foundation. We must continue to fundraise and pay off the $522,024 balance of this loan to complete our goal. • Membership loss is the major challenge facing the F.O.E. Financially, leadership must construct a plan to fund necessary investment in marketing, programs and training to rejuvenate membership while membership-driven income declines. • The Employees’ Pension Fund no longer exists. The Grand Aerie assumed the liability. Local Aeries were responsible for 77% of the $12,000,000 underfunded Pension Fund when the Grand Aerie assumed liability. That’s $9,240,000 accounting

21

the Grand Aerie borrowed on behalf of the Local Aeries to fully fund the Pension Fund, allowing it to be terminated and beneficiaries to be fully paid. • The debt payment of $1,800,000 per year for the Pension Fund loan accounts for almost 22% of the Per Capita tax received per year. This is a fixed amount that will be part of the budget moving forward for several years. If membership revenue continues to decline, this will consume a larger percentage of the budget each year. Operating Expenses have decreased or remained relatively flat for six consecutive years. The increase in the PerCapita Tax rate passed in 2013 is no longer compensating for the loss of membership. Declining membership and paying off the debt are the two greatest obstacles this organization currently faces.

Honor Flight THE

Grand Madam President’s PR O J E C T

GMP H E L E N P O E H N E R ,

is raising money during the year to help take American veterans in the Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana TriState Aerie to Washington, D.C. to visit military memorials through Honor Flight Tri-State.

GMP CHARITY 2017-18 GMP Helen Poehner is also raising money for the M. “Blackie” Floyd Alzheimer’s Fund.

Many brave American veterans lack the funds to visit our nation’s capital to witness the memorials honoring those who served and their counterparts who lost their lives in the wars in which they valiantly served. Grand Madam President Helen Poehner, in partnership with Honor Flight Tri-State, is raising money throughout her year to help give veterans in her home region the experience they deserve. The trips come at no cost to the veterans and include airfare, a bus tour, an Honor Flight Tri-State signature t-shirt, name badge souvenir, three meals and an assigned guardian (if they do not have a family member joining them) for the one-day trip. Veterans of World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War who are aged 65 or older and served either stateside or overseas are eligible for the program. Those who would like to make a donation to help make these dreams a reality may do so by sending a donation payable to the F.O.E. Charity Foundation with GMP Honor Flight noted in the memo line to the Grand Aerie at 1623 Gateway Circle South, Grove City, OH 43123. Helen will present the total donations at the end of her year to help pay for Veterans to experience Honor Flight.
