As the incoming President of the Dominican Hospital Foundation, I would like to share appreciation for Allison Niday’s guidance the past two years. I'm honored to lead the efforts to secure philanthropic support to ensure our hospital's continued growth and development.

Successful collaboration between our boards, hospital staff, physicians, and donors helps produce strong relationships that foster genuine goodwill and a caring spirit that benefits the patients we serve with comprehensive medical services and outreach programs. The WoW Council was formed in 2018 to provide education, input and financial resources for new and existing women’s health services at Dominican Hospital. This year marks the fifth round of funding crucial programs and technology with more than $365,000 raised in support.

$80,000 Funding Announced for 2023:

• $16,545: Lucas Chest Compression System, Support for patients in cardiac arrest (Emergency)

By working to improve existing services, and adding new ones aligned with the hospital’s goals and directions, the WoW Council's goal is to support a comprehensive Women’s Health offering at the hospital, serving the needs of women in Santa Cruz County.

The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program gives cancer patients free transportation for cancer-related medical appointments. As a trained volunteer driver, you’ll join cancer patients on a crucial part of their journey to recovery, transporting them to and from their appointments and ensuring their access to care isn’t prevented or delayed because of lack of transportation. Significant Advances in Diagnostic Imaging Enhance Patient Care

Dominican Hospital remains at the forefront of excellence in diagnostic services with the installation of two SOMATOM Definition AS CT scanners. This major imaging technology supporting patient care is made possible thanks to the generosity of 530+ donors to the recent CT Precision Imaging Campaign.

"We are grateful to the generous support of our community for helping us deliver exceptional care to residents of Santa Cruz County and beyond," says Martin Kirch, Director, Radiology at Dominican Hospital. "Philanthropy has produced the most significant change to our imaging department in the past 20 years, impacting nearly every patient."

Computed tomography (CT) is a noninvasive test that creates multiple cross-sectional images of the body, and these images are combined to create a 3-D picture. CT scans diagnose various conditions, including heart disease, cancer, enlarged lymph nodes, blood clots, back problems, broken bones, and injuries to internal organs.

Physicians at Dominican Hospital rely on CT imaging for more than 20,000 patients annually, with CT scan volumes rising recently. Whether diagnosing abnormalities, such as tumors or blood vessels, giving a clear picture of an area before surgery, or guiding doctors on where to take biopsy tissue samples, access to modern CT imagery is a critically important technology for patient care. Multiple specialties use this innovative technology to expand

cardiology and vascular disease clinical capabilities, improve emergency medicine, and advance cancer treatment.

Dominican's new SOMATOM Definition AS CT scanners are significantly faster than previous models, helping simplify previously lengthy and complex scanning procedures and produce better-quality images. The 128-slice CT scanner is highly adaptive, providing exceptional image quality with minimal radiation exposure to the patient. Advanced CT scanners allow imaging of the entire brain, demonstrating blood flow throughout the organ over a short time. Other scans assess vascular pathways throughout the body, including the coronary arteries.

"We've been operating with one in-house scanner and now will have three," reports Kirch. "With significant advancements in image quality and speed, there will be fewer delays for patients waiting for procedures." The new CT scanners feature overhead monitors that allow physicians to see images up close and easily direct the scanner without walking to and from a control room. The

exceptional technology produces much faster scans and post-processing of the images, which helps expedite lifesaving patient care. Dominican's first new scanner became operational in January, with the second one coming into service this summer.

The 128-slice CT scanner can provide threedimensional images for virtually any patient, young or old, of any size, including those with cardiac or respiratory conditions that make it difficult to get high-quality images. Its capabilities help eliminate the need for follow-up tests and shorten hospital stays.

The successful campaign to fund Dominican Hospital's new CT scanner technology honored Sister Julie Hyer, OP, Dominican's past president. Sister Julie was a champion of modern technology, ensuring patients had access to the latest advances in health care. CT scanning is the centerpiece of diagnostic services at Dominican Hospital, a fitting tribute to Sister Julie's relentless pursuit of improved health outcomes.

$2M Grant Funding for Primary Care

Dominican Hospital was awarded $2 million in grant funding from the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) to benefit the new Morehouse School of Medicine Dominican Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dominican Hospital Receives $2 Million Grant from California Department of Health Care Access and Information to Support New Primary Care Residency Program

Dominican’s new residency program will address critical gaps in care by training more BIPOC clinicians

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (March 9, 2023) – Dignity Health Dominican Hospital, in collaboration with the Dominican Hospital Foundation, announced that it received $2 million in grant funding from the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) to benefit the new Morehouse School of Medicine Dominican Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. HCAI awarded $49.6 million in grants to 54 organizations with primary care residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics. These grants will support 17 new and expanded programs, including Dominican’s, and create 87 new residency positions across California. This funding is available in part from the $1.4 billion SongBrown Workforce for a Healthy California for All package that aims to expand and diversify the health workforce. “The Song-Brown Healthcare Workforce Training Act is vital to California’s efforts to provide equitable access to

health care,” said HCAI Director Elizabeth Landsberg. “These grants will help grow and train the next generation of health care professionals to provide critical care to residents throughout California.”

Funding priorities for Song-Brown programs include training and placing graduates in medically underserved areas and increasing health provider diversity. “Through these grant awards we will put more doctors in areas of unmet needs and further our goal of increasing access to equitable and affordable health care for individuals throughout the state,” said California Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.

“We’re honored to have been awarded a $2 million HCAI grant to help us launch our new family medicine residency right here in Santa Cruz. I believe Dominican Hospital was chosen because of the extraordinary potential we have to impact patient outcomes in the diverse community we serve,” said Dominican Hospital President Nanette Mickiewicz, MD. “We are laying the foundation for patients to have more access to culturally competent providers and for underrepresented medical students, post-graduate residents and fellows to gain community-based experience that they need to be successful in their work.”

The first class of 8 family medicine residents will begin their training in Santa Cruz beginning in July 2024. With Morehouse School of Medicine as the program’s academic sponsor, post-graduate residents and fellows will benefit from training focused on addressing health inequities and underserved patients.

Dominican Hospital’s new family medicine residency program is a joint venture between CommonSpirit Health (Dignity Health’s parent company) and Morehouse School of Medicine. Dominican Hospital was chosen as one of seven sites that will address two of the most pressing challenges in health care – a shortage of diverse clinicians and the need for more equitable health care. The announcement launches the first phase of the More in Common Alliance, a 10-year, $100 million initiative to increase cultural competency and expand representation to improve both access and quality of care patients receive.

Announced in December 2020, the partnership between CommonSpirit Health and the Morehouse School of Medicine will increase medical education opportunities for more Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC). More in Common Alliance was established

as the partnership name because research demonstrates that patients consistently fare better when treated by clinicians of similar backgrounds who share lived experiences. “We know that, statistically and anecdotally, patients have better outcomes when treated by a clinician who comes from a similar background,” said Morehouse School of Medicine President and CEO Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice. “Yet, in the medical field, there are far too few providers from underrepresented groups, and the impact that has on patient care is astounding. Through the More in Common Alliance, our aim is to change the math and the face of health care in the U.S.”

Christie’s International Sereno Real Estate

Recently joining the Partnership for Patient Care Program as an annual sponsor of Dominican Hospital is Christie's International Sereno Real Estate. Locally led and facilitated by Foundation board member Tom Brezsny with wife Terry, a $15,000 grant from the organization's 1% for Good Foundation was received in support of cancer services.

The 1% for Good Foundation exemplifies Sereno’s deepfelt connection to the community. With humble beginnings in 2012, a small group of local real estate agents awarded its first-ever grant of $5,000 to the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse.

Today, ten years later, those efforts have grown substantially and Sereno agents have given more than $5.5 million in gifts to 400+ local nonprofits throughout the regions of Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley, Peninsula and East Bay.

The Katz Cancer Resource Center was presented with a $15,000 grant in support of cancer services from Christie's International Sereno Real Estate's 1% for Good Foundation.

The list of local recipients in Santa Cruz is long and none is more deserving than Dominican Hospital’s Katz Cancer Resource Center housed at the Richard and Mary Solari Cancer Center. The Katz Cancer Resource Center is launching a pilot psychiatric program to help support the mental health and well-being of its patients. This program will help eliminate barriers to insurance and delays in treatment thereby improving the lives of our those in our community impacted by cancer.

“We’re grateful for the work that the Katz Cancer Resource Center does and proud to help fund a new program that’s so needed,” says Terry Brezsny, Sereno’s 1% Chair. “Homeownership is an investment that our clients make in this community and the depth of services that Dominican Hospital provides is a huge part of their ongoing quality of life. We feel strongly about giving back to those organizations that give so much to us.”

Spine Health

More than 80 percent of people will have back pain at some point in their lives and it is becoming more and more prevalent in the US, disrupting quality of life for millions of people. There are, however, several things you can control to keep your spine moving well and strong enough to have an active and healthy lifestyle well into your later years. There are many factors which may put a strain on your spine health including: stress management, sleep, nutrition and weight management, movement patterns and posture.

Ciara D. Harraher, MD, MPH, FRCSC, Clinical Professor, Stanford Department of Neurosurgery, and Medical Director, Dominican Hospital, states that the three most common early interventions, on which she counsels patients to reduce need for spine surgery on are:

1. Quitting smoking

2. Losing weight

3. Checking bone density

Your spine consists of three major parts:

• Neck (cervical spine)

• Mid-back (thoracic spine, where your ribs attach)

• Low-back (lumbar spine)

This complex system includes bone, vertebrae, discs, nerves, ligaments and muscles. Optimally, your spine works dynamically in concert with your hips, legs and arms to allow for bodily movement with good spine stability to prevent acute injuries or long-term overuse.

Chris Summa, MD MBA FAAOS, Spinal and Orthopedic Surgeon also promotes early intervention by controlling factors that can reduce the risk of surgery, with posture, strength, mobility and lifting mechanics being essential components of building and maintaining a healthy spine.

Posture

Good posture includes a healthy balance of your neck aligned with your shoulders and a gentle curve of your low back. A way to assess good posture is to stand with your back and feet against a wall. You should touch the wall in three places: the back of your head, between your shoulder blades and your low back. This is often referred to as a neutral spine. A healthy posture also includes proper breathing. Your diaphragm is used to breathe properly and research has shown by breathing through your diaphragm, it can help to decrease your back pain. To practice breathing through your diaphragm, start with lying on your back. Place one hand on your belly, and one hand on your chest. Take a few deep breaths, the hand on your belly should move first as well as move the most.

Sitting posture should include your feet flat on the ground, your knees at 90 degrees and your hips slightly above your knees. Your computer should be directly in front of you and your wrists in neutral position. Your elbows should be about 90 degrees. The top of the computer screen should be at eye level. You should take frequent breaks, allowing your eyes and your body to rest and reset.

Strength

The main muscles that help to support your spine include your legs, buttocks and core. These muscles must be strong, flexible and must work together. The deep abdominal muscles, often considered your core muscles work as an internal corset in your body that protects your spine. When you have back pain, it can change the timing and strength of your core muscles. Therefore you have to re-learn how to activate them properly.

Below are 2 ways that you can practice right now:

 BRACING TECHNIQUE: Tighten your core as if you are bracing for impact.

 TRY IT: SIT-TO-STAND

1. Sit on a sturdy chair.

2. With your spine in neutral, engage your core, and as you stand up, hinge forward through your hips to stand.

3. Repeat sit-to-stand movement.

FORCED EXHALE:

Exhale all of your air out and you will feel your abdomen tighten.

Once you have learned to engage your core, it is essential to build the strength of your hips and legs, so that they do the lion’s share of the work while your core helps to stabilize your spine. The following movements will help to strengthen your hips and legs, and while doing them, it is also important to make sure that your posture is aligned in a neutral position. Start slowly with focus on your breath and spine position. Only move within a pain-free range, and progress as you feel more comfortable.

 TRY IT: BRIDGES

1. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor and core braced.

2. Breathe in and as you exhale squeeze your gluteal muscles (buttocks) to gently lift your hips off the ground by pushing through your feet.

3. Lower back down slowly, repeat.

Mobility

Mobility refers to the ability for your joints to move through a range of motion with proper strength in order to perform activities and tasks with ease and efficiency. Your spine is the foundation of your mobility when it is healthy, it allows you to move multiple directions dynamically and freely. As you start a mobility program, there are a few aspects to keep in mind. Start small, breathe and ease into the movements. Try these movements to help get you started.

 TRY IT: SIDE-LYING WINDMILL

1. Lie on one side with your top knee bent up and on the ground or on a pillow.

2. Rotate your arm in a circular motion, allowing your trunk to rotate.

3. Only move in a pain-free range

 TRY IT: PELVIC TILTS

1. Lay on your back.

2. Take a breath in, and as you breathe out tighten your core muscles by pulling your belly button to your spine, pushing your low back into the ground.

3. Hold for a second or two and slowly relax back to neutral spine. Repeat.

 TRY IT: CAT/COW

1. Begin on your hands and knees to create a range of motion of your spine.

2. Start at your low back and slowly relax your spine toward the ground, moving up toward your head.

3. Reverse this movement, start at your low back again and arch up toward the sky, like a wave.

Lifting Mechanics

Lifting is a common activity that we do throughout the day, often without even thinking about it. Proper lifting mechanics are essential to be able to prevent injuries from occurring. Some important points for lifting and maintaining a healthy spine include: bend at your hips, keep your spine in neutral alignment, don’t twist as you lift/lower the object and keep the object close to your body. When in doubt, get help.

It Takes a Village!

We hear this about caring for babies, raising families and assisting elderly parents. Because today’s new parents don't always live near family, it may take a little effort to bring together your tribe.

Caring for a full-term baby, although a blessing, can be overwhelming for new parents, and can cause feelings of isolation.

n 83 percent of new moms report feeling lonely

n 54 percent feeling isolated

If you add having a stay for your newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with added medical stressors, it can make the early months of parenthood even more challenging. Imagine how much more challenging it could be if a parent is also struggling with addiction and a newborn. This is when the “village” becomes essential.

Dominican Hospital’s NICU helps babies at the start of their life, and some babies born with exposure to substances have a higher risk of additional complications with learning and development. This can be incredibly overwhelming

Supporting New Parents

to a new parent, and even more challenging for someone who is already struggling with coping skills themselves.

Beth Ralston, OTR/L, a NICU Developmental Therapist, has developed a class, offered through the PEP program, at the Dignity Health Wellness Center, to help both the babies, their parents and any supportive caregivers who are involved. Beth says, “I feel like these infants are a special group. The latest research encourages the ‘Eat, Sleep, Console’ protocol instead of using medication for calming the nervous system. This really involves the caregiver in knowing what sensory input their infant responds to in order to obtain a learning state and/or sleep.” Beth’s new class, High Risk Infant Development Play Class, see page 45, will help parents in recovery learn play skills to enhance their high-risk infant’s development.

Families will have opportunities to share successes and struggles, as well as learn and practice different strategies each week to support their baby’s development with professional guidance. This class can offer new parents support and encourage healthy social connections, with others going through a similar journey.

Connecting with a community can be incredibly powerful; human beings are social creatures by nature.

Social connections can offer a number of health benefits including:

n Boosting mood

n Reducing stress

n Strengthening your resilience and immune system

People with strong social connections also tend to have better health behaviors, like choosing healthy foods and being physically active. Healthy social connections can also support these new parents’ journey to sobriety.

All babies and their new parents can benefit from social classes that focus on play, which is one of the most essential activities to a developing child. Through play, babies explore their environment and learn from new and different information. The experiences babies have during play help strengthen and expand networks of connections in their developing brains.

Prioritize Your Mental Health

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) tells us that a mental illness is a condition that affects a person's thinking, feeling or mood. Such conditions may affect someone's ability to relate to others and function each day. The NAMI.org website offers a great deal of resources about the different types and treatments of mental illness, and we urge you to contact your primary care physician if you need urgent help.

However, you don’t have to have an illness for your mental health to suffer. Diane Bridgeman, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist in Santa Cruz states that “Most everyone has moments of psychological stressors; such as anxiety, despondency, worry, etc. whether it is in response to a life stress; such as an illness, high pressure from a job or school, financial concerns, household responsibilities, caring for a

family member, loss of a loved one, substance abuse, etc. The key seems to be to not feel embarrassed or ashamed of the feelings, and to know that often they are normal reactions to a difficult situation.”

The World Health Organization has documented the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health. Many people have had an exacerbation of psychological symptoms that they may have been experiencing before the pandemic, while even those without any pre-existing psychological difficulties also reported new-found mental health concerns. Unfortunately, this was to be expected given the enormity of the pandemic and the many unknowns and concerns. A Mental Health America (4/22) report found that there was a 500% increase over the number of people who completed an online mental health screening in 2019 and a 103% increase in 2020.”

So, If you have or think you may have an issue with your mental health, the first thing you must know is that you are not alone. Mental health conditions are far more common than you think, mainly because people don’t like to, or are scared to, talk about them. However:

1IN 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year

50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24

Dr. Bridgeman states that it is important to work toward good mental health, and for those with a diagnosed mental health disorder it is essential to stay as psychologically healthy as one can. “We all need to work toward more mental health wellness which often results in greater resiliency, which prepares us for future challenges. It is important to prioritize healthy self-care and not to feel guilty when you can’t fit it in. When you enhance your self-care routine you can better be there for those you care about, and for the activities that are important to you. Plan and carry out your wellness practices with grace and gentleness, no need to aim for perfection. By developing healthy wellness strategies we build in protective barriers and support that better helps us when needed in regulating our emotions and our overall health”.

Mental Health Tips

Here are some tips on how to prioritize your mental health.

• Make Time for Self-Care: Try a new PEP exercise class, eat well, get enough sleep, meditate, journal, and spend time in nature can all help you feel better and reduce stress.

• Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional for support. They can provide a listening ear, advice, or help you find the resources you need.

• Set Boundaries: It is important to set boundaries with yourself and others to protect your mental health. This may mean saying no to things that don’t serve you or avoiding unhealthy relationships and prioritizing healthy relationships that enhance your sense of well-being.

• Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness can help you stay present and grounded in the moment, reducing stress, and anxiety. Try incorporating mindfulness exercises like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga into your daily routine. Try some helpful PEP classes including: the classes listed below.

• Take Breaks: It’s important to take regular breaks from work or other stressors to avoid burnout. Schedule time for activities you enjoy, like reading, taking a walk, or spending time with loved ones. Take a lunch break, or after work take a PEP class!

Remember that everyone’s mental health journey is unique, so it’s important to find what works best for you. Prioritizing YOUR mental health may take time and effort but it’s worth it in the end and it’s up to YOU!

Sheng Zhen: Healing Stage 1

Sheng Zhen Meditation is a heart opening, healing practice of unconditional love. It strengthens the body, improving circulation, increasing flexibility and fortifying the immune system, it relaxes the mind, balancing the emotions, reducing stress, anger and anxiety, and it opens the heart, cultivating compassion, joy, and an understanding of oneself and the world. Freedom from Smoking is the American Lung Association's program, designed for adults who want to quit smoking. Based on research and trials, it is considered the gold standard of smoking cessation programs. The program has helped hundreds of thousands of smokers quit for good. It emphasizes understanding the psych-social and behavioral aspects of nicotine addiction and methods to "kick the habit". A supportive group atmosphere is led by Dominican Hospital Respiratory Therapists. The course lasts 7 weeks with an additional meeting scheduled following the quit date in week four.

Parkinson's Cardio-Stretch

AQUATICS REQUIREMENTS

All pool participants must be able to move through the water unsupported or have a caregiver who can provide one-on-one assistance. This includes using the lift to enter/exit the pool, dress safely before/after the pool. Baby Sign Language Introductory Workshop

This virtual workshop gives parents the opportunity to learn how sign language helps babies communicate. Signing with babies has been proven to help accelerate language development, reduce frustration, enhance a child’s self-esteem and deepen the bond between parent and child. This workshop is based on American Sign language (ASL). Fun activities and songs will show you how easy it can be to integrate more than 20 simple signs into everyday routine. Did you know that three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly?

Thanks to the support of the Dominican Hospital Foundation, families giving birth at Dignity Health Dominican Hospital are offered free individual car seat fittings so that you can go home safely. Our certified car seat technicians will visit you to schedule a car seat check or to give you more information about car seat safety.

All car seats are checked by certified technicians who will:

• Inspect, educate, and help families install the car seat correctly prior to discharge.

• Ensure the car seat has not been recalled by the manufacturer.

• Demonstrate how to install and use the car seat.

• Instruct how to correctly place a child in the car seat.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques can help you better cope with life’s stressors. We will practice hands-on skills, including: bathing, diapering, dressing, swaddling, burping and soothing your newborn. We will touch on breastfeeding skills as well as important safety considerations for cribs, car seats, and other essential baby equipment will be discussed. The video tour provides an orientation to our Family Birth Center, and shares many of the offerings we have for our new families. You will learn about our private labor and delivery rooms, postpartum suites, commitment to breast feeding and skin-to-skin contact, and our on-site Level III NICU, which provides the most advanced maternity care in the area. The tour also provides information about our Baby Friendly registered designation as well as our pre- and post-natal education and support classes.

Cardiac Risk Reduction Program (Cardiac Rehabilitation)

IN-PERSON

Lowering risk factors such as high cholesterol, weight, high blood pressure and stress has been shown to significantly reduce future cardiac problems. Designed for individuals who have had angina, heart attack, cardiac procedure (angioplasty, atherectomy, stent), bypass surgery, valve surgery or congestive heart failure. This nationally certified program includes cardiac education classes, nutrition assessment, risk factor counseling, lifestyle coaching, and monitored exercise therapy.

The Dominican Cardiac Risk Reduction Program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Diabetes Management (Type 1 & 2)

The Diabetes Management Program provides information and support to help create a personal, successful path to diabetes management. The program includes education classes and individual appointments provided by our team of health care professionals including certified diabetes educators, registered nurses, and registered dietitians.

The Dominican Diabetes Management Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program IN-PERSON

This nationally certified program provides education, breathing retraining exercises and a monitored exercise program to increase functional ability in individuals coping with COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis. Specially trained professionals will develop individualized program on initial assessment.

The Dominican Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Supervised Exercise Therapy for Peripheral Artery Disease (SETPAD)

Are you an individual living with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD), including discomfort or cramping in the legs? This program is for you. The goal of the program is to increase stamina, mobility, improve overall health and quality of life. Individuals receive supervised exercise therapy, education classes, a nutrition assessment, risk factor counseling and lifestyle coaching. Led by a multi-disciplinary team of registered nurses, exercise physiologists and dietitians.
