LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

Dear Members of the Community,

In this issue of Focus on Wellness, we are thrilled to unveil the latest updates on the Foundation’s impactful work, alongside engaging stories and insightful information centered on health and wellness. In the last few months, Dominican Hospital has seen a transition in leadership, following the retirement of Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz and welcoming Christine McSweeney as the incoming CEO, who will also oversee Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City.

As we look forward to celebrating Dominican Hospital’s 85th anniversary in September 2026, we reflect on decades of dedicated service. Dominican Hospital continues to be a vital cornerstone, devoted to addressing the diverse healthcare needs of our local community right here in Santa Cruz County.

As the philanthropic arm of the Hospital, we diligently raise essential funds from our community to support initiatives such as advanced medical technology, programmatic expansion, and, most recently, a focused effort on enhancing the services of two crucial community benefit programs. You can learn more about the Path to Wellness Campaign, which aims to enhance our Katz Cancer Resource Center and Wellness Center, on page 8.

We encourage you to explore these pages to discover how our community actively supports the well-being and growth of individuals across Santa Cruz County. I warmly invite you to join the Dominican Hospital Foundation’s endeavors in bolstering the crucial healthcare services our community relies on, as we continue to provide care to all and prepare to celebrate 85 years of healing and hope.

Welcome to Christine McSweeney, President and CEO

Awarm welcome to Christine McSweeney, MBA, FACHE, President and CEO of Dominican Hospital and Sequoia Hospital, effective Monday, April 13.

Christine transitioned to the California Region from the Utah Market, where she recently served as President of Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley & West Valley. Christine’s leadership in Utah led to Jordan Valley being named a Leapfrog Top General Hospital and a Healthgrades top 5% hospital for Quality and Safety. Her strategic expertise and commitment to excellence will be instrumental

in advancing our Hospital’s key initiatives and programs.

“I am honored and excited to join Dignity Health’s California Region and lead these two distinguished Hospitals,” shares McSweeney. “I am deeply committed to continuing the excellent work already underway at both facilities and working collaboratively with our dedicated caregivers, staff, and the communities we serve. I look forward to building on the strong foundations here and contributing to the health and well-being of the Central Coast.”

Honoring the legacy of Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz

Celebrating over 25 years as a local, community-driven, healthcare expert and leader

In her remarkable 19-year tenure as CEO and Hospital President, Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz has profoundly shaped Dominican Hospital and the Santa Cruz community. Her charismatic leadership, warm humor, and unwavering trust have endeared her to all. Her leadership is deeply rooted in a commitment to the mission and honoring the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ legacy. Dr. Mickiewicz meticulously carried forward their 84-year

tradition of compassionate healthcare, ensuring the hospital’s mission continued. One of her most proud accomplishments was starting Santa Cruz County’s first Graduate Medical Education program, strengthening physician training and local workforce development, a testament to her vision for sustained excellence.

Beyond the office, Dr. Mickiewicz’s commitment to leadership shines through. Known for her daily patient and staff rounds, she fostered a vibrant, supportive environment. Her hands-on approach and approachable nature built enduring trust, reflecting a leader who truly cares.

Under her guidance, Dominican Hospital has achieved remarkable clinical excellence. She pioneered the introduction of the DaVinci Robotic Surgery and helped establish Santa Cruz’s only full-service cardiac surgery program, elevating regional care standards. Her Infectious Disease Board Certification reinforced steadfast clinical leadership, especially during the COVID-19 response where she played a pivotal role in vaccine distribution and patient care initiatives. Dr. Mickiewicz leaves a legacy of advanced, compassionate care that will resonate for years to come.

After 25 years on Dominican Hospital’s Administration Team and 32 years with its Medical Staff, Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz celebrated her retirement on April 10, 2026. She continues to live in Santa Cruz, her home for more than three decades. Dr. Mickiewicz plans to travel, complete her 50-state quest, and spend more time with her four children and three young grandchildren, who live nearby.

We are so grateful for her leadership and commitment to the health and well-being of our community.

Creating a Healthier Future COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

In our unwavering commitment to fostering a healthier community, the Dominican Hospital Foundation has launched the Path to Wellness Campaign, an urgent appeal for philanthropic support. This crucial initiative is designed to ensure the sustained strength of two invaluable community resources: our Wellness Center and the Katz Cancer Resource Center. For more than 25 years, these philanthropically-supported centers have empowered tens of thousands through comprehensive education, proactive prevention, vital rehabilitation, and compassionate patient navigation, making a tangible difference in countless lives. Both centers provide services designed to improve our community’s path to wellness by offering each individual personalized support and resources. Because these services are not covered by insurance, we rely on philanthropic support to offer these services free-of-charge or at minimal cost.

In Memory of Dr. Robert Quinn, MD

10/5/1961 – 12/22/2024

We pay tribute to the memory and legacy of Dr. Robert Quinn, a respected physician in Santa Cruz who passed away in December 2024. He dedicated nearly 30 years as a physiatrist and rehabilitation specialist to Dominican Hospital and served the final four years of his career in a senior executive role within the Dignity Health Medical Foundation.

When Dr. Quinn arrived in Santa Cruz from Toronto, Canada, in 1995, he encountered Dominican Hospital’s rehabilitation facility housed at our Frederick Street campus. It was far from the modern, state-of-the-art center he envisioned for his patients. Yet, Dr. Quinn didn’t see limitations; he saw an opportunity. He held an unwavering belief that the Santa Cruz community deserved access to world-class rehabilitative care, delivered close to home.

Under Dr. Quinn’s visionary leadership, the rehabilitation program achieved accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This significant milestone was a direct reflection of his commitment to excellence, innovative treatment plans, and his deeply ingrained philosophy of person-centered care. CARF accreditation signified that the program not only met but often exceeded national and international standards, providing patients and their families with the assurance of the highest quality of care.

To honor his decades of leadership and dedication, the Dominican Hospital Foundation proudly renamed the Acute Rehabilitation Unit as the Dr. Robert Quinn Acute Rehabilitation Unit. This effort raised more than $350,000 in his honor and will continue to shape and define the future of rehabilitative care at Dominican Hospital for generations to come, impacting every patient who walks through our doors.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Making an Impact

The Women of Wellness (WoW) Council is a giving society dedicated to enhancing women’s health services at Dominican Hospital by providing education, input, and financial resources. Inspired by the hospital’s female founders more than eight decades ago, WoW Council members contribute an annual minimum of $1,000 to support and expand comprehensive women’s health offerings in Santa Cruz County.

The WoW Council annually holds an education meeting along with various zoom opportunities to vote and learn more about funded projects. On February 2, the WoW Council gathered with an informative luncheon at the Chaminade Resort & Spa. This education meeting featured an insightful presentation on peri- and post-menopause by Dr. Anne-Marie Jackson, MD, OB/GYN, and WoW Council member. Dr. Jackson, a leading educator and advocate for women’s health, captivated the audience of more than 50 women, sparking an engaging question-and-answer session.

Since 2019, the WoW Council has distributed more than $682,000 to support various projects and programs at Dominican Hospital.

WoW members are directly involved in shaping women’s health initiatives by voting annually on proposals that align with WoW’s mission and vision, allocating funds collected through membership dues, $1,000 annually.

I am a retired registered nurse, after 43 years at Dominican Hospital. I had a wonderful career, working in a variety of jobs from staff nurse to nursing supervisor to managing a pain clinic and finally as a clinical documentation specialist. I really loved all my jobs and loved the variety that they gave me. Dominican was like a family to me. I knew all the staff and the doctors. When I first started here, I had the privilege of working with my mom who was also an RN and an amazing role model. A few years before I retired I joined the Women of Wellness (WoW) Council.

As a former nurse at Dominican, I truly value how the WoW Council brings us together to discuss a broad range of women’s health concerns, such as topics like peri- and postmenopause. Through WoW, we don’t just learn together; we also join forces to improve women’s health services across our community. It’s so important that we support one another, both personally and by strengthening the resources we all rely on.

Supporting our Critical Newborn Patients and their Families

Dominican Hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), was established in 2000 in partnership with Stanford Children’s Health. This partnership was formed to provide excellent and essential services to our infants in Santa Cruz County, eliminating the need to travel over the hill for care. The NICU has since supported the growth and development of many newborns who were born prematurely or infants who need further clinical support. In 2024, the Dominican Hospital Foundation began a campaign to support a NICU renovation to enhance the space and promote healing and privacy for families during such a challenging time.

Through the fundraising efforts, more than $250,000 was raised! One special gift helped to secure the renovation project with the remaining funds needed. Longtime supporters of Dominican Hospital, Randy and Janet Krassow, took this opportunity to showcase to one of 6, of their grandchildren how it feels to give back. Joined by her parents, Chris and Gina, Jackie presented the check to the NICU department and received a tour of the current area including the Dr. Joseph T. Anzalone Newborn Care Courtyard, in which her grandparents made a lead gift in 2014 to create the outdoor space adorned with a “baby wall”.

Caring For Our Community

At Reiter Affiliated Companies, we are honored to support the Dominican Hospital Foundation and their leadership and commitment to bringing quality healthcare to the farmworkers, growers, and families of the Pajaro Valley. We are proud to be partners in making our community a better and healthier place to live.

Legacy of Healing

Dr. Randall Rea was a beacon of healing in Santa Cruz for over three decades, caring for countless lives as a dedicated Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist at Dominican Hospital. Joining in 1987, his unwavering commitment and expertise shone brightly in the Intensive Care Unit, where he served as Service Chief of Critical Care from 2009 to 2017. Dr. Rea’s legacy of compassionate care and enhanced healthcare quality touched every patient and colleague he encountered. However, Dr. Rea created a second powerful legacy through his charitable giving, naming the Dominican Hospital as a beneficiary of his IRA. This decision continues to support the community through the Dignity Health Wellness

Center, touching thousands more lives in Santa Cruz County.

Naming a charity as an IRA beneficiary can be a very strategic move, especially for those who wish to leave a substantial charitable gift while also optimizing their estate plan. Unlike distributions to individual heirs, which are subject to income taxes, funds passed directly to a qualified charity from an IRA bypass these taxes entirely. This means Dr. Rea’s full generosity directly impacts the community, maximizing the benefit to the Wellness Center, rather than being reduced by taxes if received by non-spouse beneficiaries. His foresight ensures that his commitment to health and healing endures, demonstrating a powerful way to make an extraordinary difference.

GIFTS OF PLANNING: To learn more ways to give through your estate, or if you have included a gift to Dominican Hospital Foundation in your plans, please contact Anthony Pagliaro at (831) 462-7712. We would like to thank you and welcome you to the Bob Swenson Legacy Society. Visit us online: dominican.mygiftlegacy.org

A Longstanding Advocate for Community Health

Since its founding in 2004 as the only locally owned and operated financial institution in Santa Cruz County, West Coast Community Bank (WCCB) has earned a reputation for unwavering commitment to community reinvestment and relationship-driven banking. The Bank’s success remains inseparable from the health and prosperity of the communities it serves.

Community engagement is not simply a priority – it is a defining principle of the Bank’s culture. Employees actively contribute through volunteerism and leadership roles on boards and committees of local nonprofit organizations. Collectively, the Bank’s team dedicates more than 3,000 hours annually to service initiatives. Among its most enduring partnerships is its longstanding support of the Dominican Hospital Foundation, a

cornerstone of healthcare in Santa Cruz County.

This collaboration has evolved over the years to encompass board participation, committee leadership and sponsorship of critical programs. For WCCB, supporting Dominican is far more than charitable giving – it is an investment in the region’s health and resilience.

“As we’ve grown, we’ve been able to give more back to our community through individual engagement as well as financial support,” said Krista Snelling, chairman and CEO of WCCB. “Our partnership reflects a shared commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities where well-being is measured not only in medical outcomes, but also in economic opportunity. Together, we’re investing in the future of our region and our communities.”

That community-first philosophy remains at the heart of the Bank’s growth strategy. Today, WCCB serves four counties – Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz – and is the largest bank headquartered in the Central Coast and one of the largest community banks in Silicon Valley. With expanded lending capacity and advanced technology, the Bank is positioned to meet the evolving needs of businesses and individuals across a broader geographic footprint.

As West Coast Community Bank looks to the future, one principle remains constant: its dedication to strengthening the health and vitality of the communities it serves. Through its enduring support of Dominican Hospital Foundation and numerous other local initiatives, the Bank continues to demonstrate that true community banking is about more than transactions. It’s about relationships, trust and shared prosperity.

Mindfulness Matters

Another day, another to-do list, another potential moment lost to stress and overthinking. With all the digital noise and daily distractions in our busy lives, it can be difficult to slow down and connect with the present moment. Before you know it, the day is over, and you feel exhausted and unfulfilled.

The good news is you can shift these patterns. Just a few minutes of mindfulness practiced throughout the day will enable you to move through life with more ease, awareness and intention. Remember, just as with exercise, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Every bit helps!

Five Facts About Mindfulness

1. Associated with numerous health benefits. Mindfulness has been shown to decrease symptoms associated with gastrointestinal disorders, reduce insomnia and improve sleep quality, lower elevated blood pressure, as well as diminish the discomfort and distress linked to hot flashes and night sweats in perimenopausal and menopausal women.

2.Lower stress and anxiety levels. Mindfulness is scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, and insomnia, while lowering cortisol levels and improving immune function.

3.Associated with higher relationship satisfaction. By fostering empathy, enhancing emotional regulation, and improving conflict resolution skills, mindfulness contributes to a more satisfying relationship experience and is a predictor of relationship satisfaction.

4.Improves memory and focus. In an era filled with distractions, practicing mindfulness strengthens attentional control and sharpens decision-making abilities. Additionally, mindfulness can aid in combating age-related memory loss and dementia.

5. Facilitates a greater enjoyment of life. Mindfulness allows individuals to fully engage in what they are doing and fosters a stronger connection to purpose and meaning in life.

With the many physical, mental and emotional benefits associated with mindfulness, incorporating simple mindfulness practices into your daily routine can be much easier than you might expect.

Three Simple Practices for Your Daily Routine

1. Mindful Wakeup. Start your day with a brief, intentional routine before distractions arise. Sit quietly, take three slow deep breaths, and set a clear intention—such as being kind or patient—that you can recall and reflect on throughout the day.

2.Mindful Eating. Eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and doing it mindfully can turn eating into a far richer experience. Before eating, pause to take 8-10 deep breaths and ask yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 “How hungry am I?”. By becoming more aware of your hunger level, you can make more intentional choices about what, when, and how much to eat. Take time to experience the taste, flavors, and textures. This practice allows you to enjoy food more fully and respond to your body’s true needs.

3.Mindful Driving: While traffic can easily spark stress and anger, driving also provides an opportunity to practice mindfulness and compassion.

• First, take a deep breath. This simple, yet impactful action creates a space between the trigger of traffic and your stress response, allowing for perspective and choice.

• Next, observe your surroundings. Recognize that other drivers, like you, desire safety, ease, and happiness. While you may notice some drivers who appear frustrated, you might also spot someone singing or smiling, which can lighten your own stress. Engaging in this practice can reduce road rage and anxiety, transforming a challenging moment into an opportunity for calm reflection. To integrate mindfulness more fully into your life the Dignity Health Wellness Center recommends the following PEP

Good Sleep for Good Health

With today’s busy lifestyles and overbooked schedules, getting a full night’s rest can be challenging. However, just like eating well, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly, getting enough quality sleep is essential for your overall health.

Good quality sleep is restorative, offering numerous benefits that help our brain, mood and body.

Better mood and brain function

⊲ Enhanced mood and mental health — Adequate sleep helps in emotional regulation, significantly reducing stress, anxiety, and the likelihood of depression.

⊲ Increased energy and daytime alertness — Sleeping well allows you to hit the reset button, be more positive and be better prepared to take on your daily activities with more energy, alertness, and focus.

⊲ Brain maintenance/Improved cognitive function — During sleep, waste is cleared from the brain, paving the way for improved brain function including improved memory, focus and learning.

Improve Functions

Better body function

⊲ Stronger immune system — Adequate sleep allows your immune system to operate more effectively, protecting you from illnesses.

⊲ Reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes — While you sleep, your blood pressure goes down, relieving strain on your heart and blood vessels. Poor quality sleep can lead to reduced glucose tolerance, impaired insulin sensitivity and a higher risk of diabetes.

⊲ Weight management — Sleep helps manage appetite by regulating hunger hormones (ghrelin and leptin). A lack of sleep is linked to higher calorie intake and weight gain.

⊲ Pain management — Proper sleep increases the body’s pain threshold, reducing body aches, headaches, and overall pain sensitivity.

⊲ Faster muscle recovery and tissue repair — During a good night’s sleep, your body builds muscle, repairs tissue damage, and regenerates cells.

Consider contacting Dignity Health Wellness Center for a variety of PEP exercise classes and others to improve your sleep including “Hypnotherapy for Stress, Anxiety, & Sleep” class, see page 31.

⊲ Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep daily for optimal health.

For a better night’s rest:

⊲ Establish relaxing pre-sleep rituals like taking a warm bath, practicing deep breathing or reading for a few minutes.

⊲ Maintain a consistent schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on the weekends.

⊲ Turn off TVs, computers, and phones at least 30-60 minutes before bed. Staring at the light from your phone, computer or television throws off your brain’s internal clock, disrupting your sleep cycle.

⊲ Avoid alcohol, caffeine and large meals for several hours before bedtime.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you have continued difficulty sleeping as you may have a sleep disorder like insomnia or sleep apnea.
