In the former Christy’s Sundown Restaurant location, the Johnson family of Fred’s Southern Kitchen and Johnson’s BBQ fame have opened their newest restaurant under the direction of son Michael, a graduate of The Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan, and with the talent of Chef Patrick Schaefer, who spent 14 years with Disney. Henry David Thoreau is quoted for saying “This world is but a canvas to our imaginations.” Within every person is an imagination that when given freedom can accomplish great things. However, so many rigid structures and routines in society often limit our creative freedom. Not to mention, a lack of emphasis on the arts. As important as academics and athletics are, the art community often gets overshadowed. I can look at my own lifestyle and see this reality. My oldest son is now 10, and for many years we were trying to encourage him to find an activity he was passionate about. Over the years we have signed him up for every type of athletic team, none of which he ever played a second season because he wasn’t enjoying himself. We encouraged him to succeed academically and have hired multiple tutors over the years to keep his grades up. However, all along, the area we were neglecting was the arts. Once we got him involved in painting and other artistic activities, we finally saw a passion come from within and knew which direction to push him towards. The Ridge Art Association is striving to keep the arts thriving in Polk County. This organization was founded 60 years ago and is an incredible resource to the Winter Haven Community. This month, we featured Christy Hemenway, Executive Director, as our spotlight interview to get an update on the association. Other than the many exhibits either in the works or currently on display, the most exciting thing right now is the move to the downtown community. Through the support of the City of Winter Haven, doors have been opened for the association to move its home to a new location in the near future. Make sure you check out the spotlight interview to learn more from Christy about how vital this non-profit organization is to our community and ways you can take advantage of the opportunities they provide. Our feature this month also falls right in line with helping you place an emphasis on the arts. On a fairly regular basis, you hear of people signing up for piano lessons, or maybe guitar, drums or trumpet. However, how often do you hear of people taking organ lessons? I can remember growing up in church and looking at the large golden organs that filled the front of the sanctuary and being fascinated that the noise they produced came from what looked like a small piano. Fletcher Music Centers specializes in selling and teaching this beautiful instrument. They even offer 6-week lessons free of charge to anyone who wants to begin learning. For those who become part of the Fletcher community, there are an endless array of opportunities and activities to take advantage of, most of which are of no cost. FMC is another incredible resource for the Winter Haven community to embrace the arts. If you have not been embracing the arts, then tap into your local community because these are only two of the many organizations in Winter Haven available to you.

School may be out for the summer and for most people in the education system, this means a time to rest and take it easy. For the Kiwanis Club, however, now is not the time to rest, but rather to jump in with both feet and actively get involved in the community. In keeping with the slogan of the Kiwanis Club, “serving the children of the world,” the annual Stuff the Bus program provides school supplies to children in need. Every June and July, the club collects supplies and donations and encourages local businesses to participate by becoming drop
locations for the contributions. On August 14th, the Kiwanis will park a bus in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Cypress Gardens Blvd. across the street from State Farm Insurance Company, distribute flyers, and collect supplies and donations. Benefiting the Polk Education Foundation, one hundred percent of the proceeds go toward school supplies. Karen Phillips, the chairman for Stuff the Bus, reports that last year, the club raised $67,000 and is hoping to top that record this year. Sixteen elementary schools in the Polk County
area will receive supplies on August 17th, when the Kiwanis club will distribute the various products. “It’s a very gratifying project to be involved in,” says Suzie Morraco of the Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven. For the second year, Fantasy of Flight has partnered with the Kiwanis Club and joined in participating in the Stuff the Bus program. Kim Long of Fantasy of Flight commented on the program saying, “We at Fantasy of Flight are delighted to be partnering with the Winter Haven Kiwanis on the Stuff the Bus campaign again this year. It is a great opportunity for us to thank folks for giving to the school supply drive by extending a discount on our
attraction tickets and directly benefit our local schools.” As a sign of gratitude, Fantasy of Flight is offering a five-dollar discount off park admission for each donation received. Mary Dietrick of Dietrick Public Relations is helping to promote the drive by publicizing the event for Fantasy of Flight. She is very optimistic about the drive, saying how “exciting it is to have the opportunity to give back to the community.” For a list of accepted school supplies, visit www. fantasyofflight.com. Human Pink Ribbon For Breast Cancer Awareness by K e i r a L e n n ox
On Sunday, August 15, 2010, Lasater Flowers & Gifts will gather at least 100 women dressed in pink to form a human pink ribbon in the parking lot of Belk at Winter Haven Citi Centre. Mike Potthast of Potthast Studios in downtown Winter Haven will take an aerial photograph of the human pink ribbon at 11:00am. This event will help raise breast cancer awareness in the community and kick off this year’s annual Day of Pampering
at Belk, scheduled for Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 12:00 – 6:00pm. The Day of Pampering is a special day devoted to providing a fresh outlook for those facing the challenges of cancer, and features a variety of pampering services, a fashion show, complementary makeovers, prize drawings, and more. Pink event t-shirts are available now at Lasater Flowers & Gifts for $10, with all proceeds going to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Good Friends, Good Times, A Great Cause 8th Annual Bartender Bash by B r e n t S i mmo n s
On June 15th, Tanners Pub in downtown Winter Haven was closed to the public so that owners John and Debbie Tennick could host “The Bash”. Attendees paid $75 to get into the party, and then generously donated even more in various ways. For this they got great food from several local venues, libations prepared by the areas most notable bartenders, the chance to spend time with their friends, and the knowledge that it was all for a great cause – The Citrus Center Boys and Girls Club. Since 1955 the community has supported The Boys and Girls Club which seeks to provide all children, but especially
disadvantaged children, activities and resources that build character, aide learning, and encourage them to be productive and caring citizens. Walt Hall, Executive Director said, “This year’s event is so important because this is the hardest year, financially speaking, in my 43 years.” The good news he said was, “we’re still here, and we are serving more kids.” Chris David, of MidFlorida and a new board member of the organization got inspired when he visited a camp in Lake Wales and saw children being able to do things they wouldn’t be able to do without the Club and the support of events like this one. for reaching out to the kids, and they weren’t the only ones at the event that were passionate about the mission of the Boys and Girls Club. So much work goes into a successful event like this, and so many people have to give their time, their treasures, and their energy to make it happen that only a passionate and caring concern for the kids can explain why they get involved. We tip our hats and give a hearty thanks to all those involved in putting this together – you did a GREAT job. These folks and this community have a big heart. Everyone seemed to have a great time and all got to visit with friends, neighbors, and colleagues. All around Tanners
folks were moving from group to group, shaking hands or hugging necks. Small groups sat at tables and talked about anything and everything. In our busy daily lives, so often we don’t find the time to connect, and this event afforded us all an opportunity to do just that, and to serve an important need. Nothing is more important to the future than the children of our community, and we will surely pay a price if we don’t reach out to children other than our own, children who need our love and encouragement so much. This year’s event was a huge success. Good friends, good times, and a GREAT CAUSE! What more could you ask for?

This year, the Ridge Art Association celebrates its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1950, Polk County’s most prestigious art organization for six decades has stimulated awareness and appreciation for the fine arts through cultural events, exhibitions, and educational programs. T. Michael Stavres, the city’s Director of Community Services commends the organization: “We appreciate the significant role Ridge Art plays in Winter Haven’s overall quality of life as it provides opportunities for local artists to display their creations and for residents to experience art and culture in multiple ways. Incredibly talented member artists capture our community in visual form that often tells a greater story than any written word ever could. We all benefit greatly from the Ridge Art Association’s efforts.” Meet University of Mississippi graduate Christy Hemenway, the organization’s Executive Director, who oversees the facilities, exhibits, and volunteers. Q: Tell us about Ridge Art Association. A: The non-profit 501(c)3 organization, currently located in Winter Haven’s Chain O’ Lakes Civic Center Complex, survives and thrives thanks to generous local businesses and citizens who realize artistic endeavor is indicative of a community’s health. RAA exists to provide fine arts activities for our premier community. The competition art gallery’s operating income derives from membership dues, exhibition sponsors, competition entry fees, private and corporate donations and the City of Winter Haven. Annual dues and donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated. Q: How did you become involved, Christy? A: After 9/11 in 2001, my husband Rick, a realtor and President of the RAA Board of Directors, suggested the job would be perfect for me. Prior to that I was a fashion buyer for Rheinauer’s, a stay-at-home mom for 14 years to my nowgrown children, and active in the community and garden club. Q: Can you detail the benefits of membership? A: Annual membership affiliation is probably the best artistic value in the state. Various memberships are available which promote young artists and all-age students in their educational and artistic pursuits. Members receive a directory, invitations to all opening receptions, reduced fees for classes, and a discount on competition entry fees. Pricing is extremely affordable: $25 for seniors (60+) and students (21 and under); $30 for individuals; $50 for families. Beyond the basics are levels such as patrons, benefactors, and silver, golden, or platinum “Palette” contributors.
Q: Detail the organization’s upcoming relocation. A: In late May the association officially became part of the downtown district. City Commissioners approved unanimously an agreement allowing us space in the old Social Security Administration building at 245 West Central Avenue. Our 10-year contract can be extended three separate times for five-year terms each. Thanks to the city’s generosity, Ridge Art will use the facility free-ofcharge for cultural arts displays, programs, and classes. RAA will share expenses for the extensive renovations to the façade, interior, and roof will begin in January and will pay the building’s taxes. While renovation is underway, RAA will continue to do what it does best – showcase local artists, their work, and our lovely community. The downtown’s dynamic energy should increase visitor numbers and activity. Q: What excites you most about Ridge Art Association and its impact in our town? A: Most people are probably unaware that RAA gifts $25,000 annually to community artists who add beauty and insight to our lifestyles. I’m also happy to expose the public who may never visit a museum to artwork through venues like the City Hall or the Winter Haven Airport display. Last year, we sold three works to people who had never before been to a gallery. We also take bi-annual trips to promote art awareness and cultural appreciation. Last March the group visited Italy and the south of France. The 2007 trip was to London and Paris. We enjoy each location’s special sites, museums, galleries, food, music, and landscapes. Q: What’s next on the RAA calendar? A:Mark your calendars for these “culture up” your friends and family dates of exhibitions up-and-coming or now-in-process. Open to those ages 12+, tickets are $8 or $7 advance. For a peek at special effects creation, younger visitors can enjoy one of the two “lights on” tours. October 26 – November 17, 2010: The Polk County Art Teachers’ Invitational is a competition for local public and private school art teachers. December 2 – 19, 2010: “BLACK & WHITE & READ ALL OVER” is a juried compeition. Winter Haven’s Inman Park has been around for more than a century. All that time, the historical park has been mostly landscaped open space, but that’s all getting ready to change. Park improvements bring a completely new look to Inman Park. Work was recently completed on the almost $400,000 project, funded in park with a Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) grant. The new park includes a one-half-mile paved loop walking trail, multi-generational play area, exercise stations, parking, picnic facilities, Florida-friendly gardens, landscaping, educational exhibits and other site amenities. Historically, the 8.5-acre park consisted of only flowering trees, a few picnic tables with benches, with a drive through the park’s center. More than 50 volunteers turned out for a Community Planting Day, held at the park on May 15. New landscaping includes more than 600 plants. Other components of the new park, including the exercise stations have recently been installed, as well. “This is fantastic,” Joyce Young said during a recent visit to Inman Park with her granddaughter. Watch for information about a grand opening that will be scheduled later this summer. A little background is important for such a grand new park, located at the City’s northern entrance. In the
early 1880’s, according to Josephine Burr’s book “History of Winter Haven, Florida, Dr. Frederick Inman and his wife, Florence Jewett Inman, came to Winter Haven in search of a milder climate than that of their native Akron, Ohio. The couple didn’t come to Winter Haven only to live – they got involved. Over the next several decades, the Inmans became involved as the new city of Winter Haven was developed. The Inmans helped bring the railroad to the area, and helped establish the Florida Citrus Exchange, started a school in the Florence Villa area, and had a hand in many other noteworthy deeds, as well. The couple also operated a resort at the Florence Villa Inn that grew from their home on Lake Spring. Dr. Inman is said to be responsible for the birth of Florence Villa, where employees of local citrus packing plants and the family inn lived. While in Ohio, Frederick Inman had been a practicing doctor, but in Florida he chose to grow roses, citrus, pineapple and peach trees, as well as other exotic fruit. Soon the couple would come to own several hundred acres – most of it in the area of near U.S. Highway 17 and Avenue T/Havendale Boulevard, as well as from the south side of Spring Lake, north to what is now U.S. Highway 92. Dr. Inman died in 1910. In Florence Jewett Inman’s last will

and testament, dated May 16, 1916, Mrs. Inman willed the property now known as Inman Park to the City with the caveat that it be dedicated for public use and “shall always be open for everyone as a place set apart for recreation and ornament.” Since that time, the park at U.S. 17 North and Avenue T NW has been a passive park, maintained by the City.
The park also includes a memorial park to both the Inman’s, as well as other family members. The completed park improvements bring grand recognition to contributions made by the Inman family to make the city of Winter Haven the premier city it remains today.

Well it’s about time. Some nutritionists are finally defending chocolate milk even as state education leaders are trying to get rid of it. They want to remove it from school menus because they say it contains too much sugar which is why all of our kids are so fat. Okay, that’s a paraphrase. The same goes for strawberry or other flavored milks. Sure, they make up 70 percent of all the milk sales in schools but what do kids know anyway. Instead, state higher ups would like kids to choose pure fruit juices or white milk in the blue cartons. They say helping, I say forcing kids to make the right choices will make for healthier students. I love it when educators are so immersed in what goes into our mouths they forget to see the forest for the trees… or is it the trees for the forest? Never mind. No one can argue that chocolate and strawberry milk have a lot more calories than regular old white milk. 8-ounce carton of chocolate milk has about 26 grams of sugar verses white milk with only 12 grams. There’s even a dude in Colorado who says kids could gain as much as three pounds per year from chocolate milk consumption alone. One more factoid from my friends at the St. Pete Times: school sales account for more than half of all flavored milk sold in the U.S. So, back to some of those pesky nutritionists who don’t agree with the state high and “muckity mucks”. They say kids will just end up drinking more juices that contain even many more calories. They say if kids stop drinking milk their diets will lack the necessary calcium and potassium for bone development. Did I mention the farmers are really ticked because they say milk sales will drop, they will need more subsidies, the stars will fall from the heavens and the Cubs may even win the World Series? Now, my take on the matter. After raising four kids I can tell you two things for sure. One, not all kids are fat. My kids have skinny genes in them and I don’t mean the kind you put on. Heck, my sons drank chocolate milk like it was water and they still barely weighed 170 pounds even though they are both 6 feet 4 inches tall. It was a battle getting them to eat broccoli. My wife was very creative in getting them to eat alfalpha sprouts by calling them space weeds. And she got them to slug down a teaspoon of cod liver oil each day without the promise of a new car when they reached 16 years of ago. Forget this obesity stuff for just a second. The truth about white milk verses chocolate is simple. White milk in those blue cartons tastes funny. Go ahead, ask any kid. How many times have you opened one of them up only to take a big swig of sour milk? It only happens once!!!!!

Graduation ceremonies are always meaningful occasions. College and high school are the “standards”, but it’s not unheard of to receive an engraved invitation – RSVP – to watch your favorite four-year-old walk across the stage in a cap and gown. Early summer sees commencement exercises of all sorts, but this year’s most meaningful - for me - had to have been the hour I spent with a group of 8th Grade students at Turkey Creek Middle School. They had successfully completed the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program and were more than ready for high school and the rest of their lives. The annual event, emceed by former assistant principal Scott Anderson, is a banquet of celebration and encouragement. Ten 8th grade students made their way across the stage in front of a room full with parents, teachers, students, administrators and guests. Principal Dennis Mayo kicked off the ceremony with a welcome, and by the time the graduates headed for the buffet they were weighed down with more awards than some could carry. So why all the fuss? Why make so much noise about the simple transition into high school? Why not just hand over report cards and start getting ready for the next batch? The answer addresses the whole point of ESE. We have a remarkable federal initiative that mandates a “free and appropriate” education (public law 94-142, 1975, re-imagined as IDEA in 1990), and it’s a plan designed to make sure all children have access to first-rate schooling – regardless.
However, such a venture only works when the effort goes both ways. The point of ESE is not to make school easy; the point is to make school possible. Forgive me, but I must repeat the thought. It’s a powerful idea that I don’t want us to gloss over. The point of exceptional student education – and this applies to pretty much any public program – is not to make school easy; the point is to make school possible. I taught ESE for almost two decades, and it was shocking to observe how many parents believed it was our job to make school easy for their kids! But that’s not it at all. What good ESE teachers do is everything in their power to make success an option for those students and families prepared to do their part and work as a team. And, let me tell you, Turkey Creek has some good ESE teachers. That’s the reason ten 8th grade graduates walked across the stage having actually achieved something. That’s what exceptional student education is all about. The event’s sponsor was kind enough to invite me to speak, so I told the students about my son, Andrew, who really didn’t enjoy school that much when he was their age. “But today he’s doing a job that he loves, committed to helping people, travelling all over the world, and making enough money to live the kind of life he wants,” I said. “And I’m going to tell you how.” I dove in while I had their attention. “The first thing Andrew did was simply hang in there. It’s not enough to say that ‘50% of success is just showing up.’ It turns out that 100% of achievement depends on hanging around to the end. So I want to encourage you to stay in school. “The other thing was that Andrew believed. People may tell you ‘seeing is believing’. But my son realized there are things that you’re never going to see until you first believe.” ESE is about making good use of all the abilities at a students’ disposal. It’s about teachers, parents, and students working together to take collective responsibility and to give everyone a fighting chance. And, mostly, it’s about believing. 2010 Strawberry Queen Natalie Burgin drove the point home at the end of her talk. “You can do it!” she said with a huge smile, and the kind of enthusiasm only festival queens can pull off with any credibility. And she really meant it – you could tell.

Drops of Jupiter, Winter Haven’s newest art gallery, hosted it’s opening show “Whimsy”: a collection of 12 local artists and resident artist Laura Beatty, on June 18th. If you missed Laura Beatty’s show at Polk State College you can now enjoy her collection at Drops of Jupiter. Beatty has moved her working studio to Drops Of Jupiter and will also be one of the instructors for the many classes to be offered. Other local artists currently showing their work here include Sharon Creedon, Lauren Kalogridis, Wade Slater, Beverly Gustafson, Ilene Phelan, Joahnna Mitchell, Mary Ellen Porter, Audra Hewett, Patty Lovell, Connie Combs, Susan Waddell, long time Winter Haven resident and owner of Drops of Jupiter, in her own words: “..sparked by a passion for art and a mission to support the local artists. Sundown Southern Eatery

Nicholas “Nick” Christy opened the doors to Chirsty’s Sundown Restaurant in the early 50’s, and operated the well-known and much loved establishment until 2007. Many loyal patrons and friends mourned the closing of the restaurant then, and earlier this year the passing of the man himself. The restaurant and the man were inseparable and both were significant and much loved fixtures in the community. At about the same time Christy opened his restaurant in Winter Haven, Elton and Evelyn Johnson were starting a family tradition in the restaurant business in Plant City, Florida. Their son, Fred and his wife Tammy carried on the tradition, and like Christy they are respected, successful restaurateurs. They’ve grown to operate four Fred’s Southern Kitchens, two Johnson Barbeques (run by their son Owen), and Southern Gourmet Catering. These two histories came together when Fred and Tammy were presented the opportunity to reopen a restaurant where Christy’s had been operated for over 50 years. It was however, a daunting task. The building had to be renovated and a menu developed. The Johnson team knew there would be the inevitable comparisons to the much-loved Christy’s. Fred and Tammy turned to their youngest son Michael, a graduate of The Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan to manage their newest venture. In May they opened the Sundown Southern Eatery. I went to dinner at the Sundown with a group of 15
family members, and I have to say I was impressed. The newly remodeled building looked incredible. Just like the name, they kept part of the old to honor the past. The changes they made both opened up the space and updated the atmosphere. I especially loved the artwork – depicting scenes of Florida, and the bar area with a baby grand piano. The higher ceilings create a more spacious feel. The service was impeccable, which is something you can expect from any Johnson run establishment. We went when the staff was still green, and even though our party was large and it was a busy Saturday night, the intense training each server received was evident. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and got the job done. Michael is an ever-present fixture in the dinning room and his goal is to make sure every guest experience is a great one. Chef Patrick Schaefer spent over 14 years honing his culinary skills with Disney. What makes the difference is his and his kitchen staff ’s attention to the details and their focus on fresh, quality ingredients. The good thing about going with such a large family group was that we ordered and shared nearly everything on the menu, and everything was great. The menu is billed as “classic southern dishes that have been revamped to offer new and exciting flavors,” and it lived up to its billing. Another thing about the menu is that it will always be a work in progress. Since I was there for dinner I stopped by for lunch and the Chef
has already reworked some of the dishes, added others, and removed some. Why? I asked the Chef and he said, “We want to have something for everyone, and we want to listen to the feedback of our guest.” Last but not least, the Sundown has a great lounge that sports wonderful drinks and a good selection of beers and wines. Desert is not required but is highly recommended.

THE BENEFITS OF OWNING A HOME The recent housing bubble burst has made many potential homeowners wary of making the leap of buying their own home instead of continuing to rent. Financially speaking, owning your own home has many benefits. For years, the average American has held around $10,000 in credit card debt and less than three months worth of living expenses in a savings account. We have neglected to max out retirement contributions while happily driving off the car dealer’s lot with a loan for something that loses value every day! Home ownership is still is a form of forced savings for Americans who don’t want to have to pay close attention to where they put their money. The same investment as a down payment on a $200,000 home at a normal appreciation rate of 5% would return nearly 5 times the stock market return, at $110,300,” he says. So, what’s the lesson here? Don’t let a market correction scare away your good sense. Home ownership is the way to go if you want to build wealth and start paying for an asset that eventually pays you back.
