Even though it happens every year, I am still never prepared for Lake County’s attack of the fall events! I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m exhausted! Starting with the week of preparation, building the haunted hayfield for Howlofest, which was amazing. It is always really cool to look back and see how the businesses and volunteers come together to accomplish this huge undertaking for the community. It all paid off when we saw the thousands of costumed trunk or treaters converged on Main Street. The pet parade and costume contest brought out 120 four legged friends for the festivities. The Business Development Committee put together another successful community event and raised money for future events! I am proud my family and I were a part of putting it together.

Getting past Howlofest, we enjoyed the first annual Taste of South Lake. The food was amazing and I thought the number of participants was incredible! The Renaissance Faire was a smashing success as always at Hickory Pointe. Saturday, FOCUS Magazine participated in the Annual Leesburg Chili Cook-off and took FOURTH place! I can’t tell you how proud I am of that! I have never made 12 gallons of chili on location before! It was definitely an experience and I am very happy we placed against so much tough competition!

Throw in the Eustis Rocks, Empty Bowls, Purple Passion, Art of the Deal, Taste of Tavares, all the Farmer’s Markets and High School Football games… and its easy to see why I have bags under my eyes! This county definitely keeps us all busy! I, for one, wouldn’t have it any other way!

Now, we turn our attention to the upcoming Holiday Season! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to thank our readers for picking us up each month and our advertisers for their support and entrusting us for their advertising needs. I want to thank my team for their hard work every month and my family for their love and patience! I even want to thank my local government leaders for making Lake County such a wonderful place to live and to do business! Thank you all!

Eustis On October 14th, the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its 4th Annual Community Service and Business Awards Gala. This sold out event was organized around the theme “Eustis Rocks!” and recognized 14 local businesses and community leaders who help to make Eustis and the surrounding area a great place to live. The 3rd annual Walk 4 Animals held on October 15th proved to be bigger and better than before. All our four legged friends say “Thank you” for the support!

Annual Pumpkin Painting and Carving Contest The Leesburg annual pumpkkin “painting and carving contest” proved to be fun and very creative!

Leesburg Chili Cook Off Fun was had by all at the 13th Annual Leesburg Chili Cook off. The crowds were large and the chili was good! The winners were: Judges Choice: 1st place-Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 2nd place-Alada’s Gift Shop, 3rd place-Two Old Hags Wine Shop and 4th Place- Focus Magazine. People’s Choice Award: 1st place-Professional Firefighters of Leesburg, 2nd place-Levi’s Bistro, 3rd Place-Martins Lock Shop.

Best Decorated Booth Award: 1st - Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 2nd - Publix Supermarket at Palm Plaza, 3rd - Four Star Homes.

Leesburg Firefighters kept the barbeque grill under control at the annual Beast Feast on the grounds of the Historic Mote Morris House benfitting the Leesburg Center for the Arts.

Senate Candidate Spends Day at Lake Tire & Auto U.S. Senate candidate Craig Miller spent day working at Lake Tire & Auto. Miller spent the day changing tires, sweeping floors, and greeting customers. This was part of Miller’s campaign program of experiencing everyday jobs and making contact with small business owners. Miller is challenging Senator Bill Nelson for his seat.

Fundraiser for The Haven Ruby Street Grille hosted it’s Annual Purple Passion fundraiser on November 3rd. The event is to raise money and awareness for The Haven, which is a local shelter for battered women and children. The event included live music, as well as a raffle and a silent auction. Ruby Street Grille provided an amazing array of appetizers and drink specials.

Tavares Celebrates Grand Opening of Aesop’s Park With a Vine Cutting Ceremony

In the center of the park boasts a pond, which was stocked with over 1500 catfish by The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A fishing rodeo was held in conjunction with the grand opening celebration. Vendors surrounded the pond, offering a variety of activities, including birdhouse clinics, dog training demonstrations, tennis instruction, a gardening clinic, and nature tours.

In addition to the fishing pond, the park also includes a children’s playground, an outdoor fitness area, edible landscape, the City’s dog park, and a community vegetable garden which even has folk art scarecrows. The new “reading tree” beckons kids to its shaded benches with small easels attached, perfect holding a book or a sketch pad.

Visitors enjoyed listening to music performed by Tavares High School Jazz band before the City Council members and Mayor Robert Wolfe held the official vine cutting ceremony, thanking all of the city employees whose efforts made this project possible.

MEMBER SERVICES

Chair: Gary Tolley The Member Services Committee has put the finishing pieces in place for the newly formed Young Professionals Group. The “Young Professionals” as they are referred to encompass all members who are between the ages of 21 and 40. This sector of our membership will promote what the South Lake Chamber is all about and learn the leadership and business skills from the more “seasoned” professionals within the Chamber.

For anyone interested in serving on the Member Services Committee, we are looking for a few members to bring in new ideas and initiatives for 2012. Contact Ray Villegas for more information.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Chair: Curt Binney The Economic Development Committee met on October 13. They discussed the upcoming Economic Development Summit that Lake County’s Department of Economic Development is holding on November 14. The committee then heard from the City of Groveland on their initiative for regional collaboration between the County and South Lake cities in the development of alternative water sources.

They then recommended that the Chamber Board pass a resolution supporting this type of regional collaboration. County Economic Development Director Scott Blankenship gave updates on the new South Lake Business Development Center and the Wellness Way initiative with Orange County. Our next meeting will be 4 p.m., November 10 at Jenkins Auditorium.

Taste of South Lake Delicious Success Article by : Heather Graham

T

he much hyped first annual Taste of South Lake was held at Clermont’s Waterfront Park on Thursday, November 3rd from 5:00-8:30 pm. Vendors lined up inside and outside of the big tent to welcome hungry ticket holders. Organized by the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, this event brought together twenty-four local restaurants to serve up samples of what they do best, as well as thirty-seven local businesses to provide information as part of

a mini-expo.

Each ticket holder received a page of tear off coupons to be redeemed for their sample at the associated participating restaurant.

Lakeridge Winery was on hand to pour samples of their award winning vino while the Lagniappe Brewing Company offered up their own specialty brews. Restaurants, such as Carrabba’s Italian Grill, who won the People’s Choice Award for Best of

South Lake, served up their famous Chicken Marsala with some pasta and bread. The Oyster Bar offered a choice of peel and eat shrimp or a tasting of their homemade New England Clam Chowder. Each restaurant had one of their signature items available for experiencing.

Outside the main tent, Buffalo Wild Wings made a big impression with their large party trailer, which included four large screen television sets mounted on the side of it which aired ESPN sports via satellite, insuring the sports fans didn’t miss a thing!

They served up wings with choice of one of their signature sauces, as well as had beers for sale to wash them down. While dining, guests were entertained with live music by Brutha Niel and the Real Deal.

After enjoying bites from each restaurant, guests got to vote for their favorite, which then received the honor of being named Best of South Lake. This inaugural event was a huge success with an estimated 800 tickets sold. For more information on next year’s Taste of South Lake, contact the South Lake Chamber of Commerce.

Howlofest 2011 Fun for All Ages Article by Heather Graham and Photos by Bonnie Whicher For the fourth consecutive year, the Tavares Chamber of Commerce’s Business Development Committee put together a two day Halloween event for the community. Friday night visitors of all ages enjoyed the Haunted Hayride which wove its way through the dark downtown streets and alleyways before entering the Haunted Field filled with scare zones, including a Zombie Town. Shrieks were heard from the hay-lined trailers full of thrill seekers, as chainsaws were fired up and zombies “attacked” from all sides. A cannibal-themed dinner theater skit was performed by Lake Dora Sushi & Sake at one of the scare zones.

Saturday the fun continued with business owners and non-profit organizations lining Main Street to hand out candy and man carnival games for the thousands of costumed trunk or treaters who showed up. Vendors sold food and drinks in the food court while everyone waited for the costume contest to commence. After winners in the three kid’s age categories were announced, 120 costumed pets paraded down Main Street past the judges table for their own costume contest. Many owners got in on the fun by having costumes to match their pets!

At dark, parents and kids lined up down Joanna Street to wait their turn on the Haunted Hayride.

Four tractors ran continuously for the full four hours giving rides to the large crowd of ticket holders.

Howlofest is a volunteer operated event put on for the community by the Business Development Committee. All monies raised are used to organize and orchestrate other community events throughout the year, such as the quarterly Art Around Town and annual Howlofest. Offering up Fresh, Organic, Homemade, and Homegrown Goods

T

he slightly cooler weather of fall beckons Lake County residents and visitors to the outdoor beauty the area is known for. While there is a nearly unlimited number of festivals and events to enjoy, there are also regularly organized farmer’s markets on nearly every corner of the county. While some of them are year round and others seasonal, they all have a lot to offer!

The Downtown Clermont Farmer’s Market runs year round and is held in historical downtown Clermont. Every Sunday, forty to forty-five vendors line Montrose Street to peddle their wares. Visitors can find just about anything, from the standard farmer’s market array of fresh produce, baked goods, and plants to the more unique items, including homemade gourmet pastas, trail mix, organic produce, handspun yarn, soy candles, Amish Jams and Jellies,and homemade peanut butter. Food vendors are also present, offering festival foods such as kettle corn, barbecue, and hot dogs.

From Clermont, a short drive down Hwy 27, Cagan Crossings also hosts their Town

Center Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays. As it is held in the evenings from 4-7pm, this is a perfect alternative for those who can’t make it to a morning market.

On Saturdays, head the other direction down Hwy 27 to downtown Leesburg. The Leesburg Saturday Morning Market offers a variety of vendors around the square, along with life entertainment weekly provided by local musicians. The Market is organized by the Leesburg Partnership, who manages to keep it interesting, with ever changing activities and events, including building scarecrows, chili cook offs, pumpkin carving, and even a Not So Westminster Dog Show.

Of course, they also have great vendors

selling produce, plants, flowers, coffee beans, ethnic foods, honey, and baked goods. The vendors and products vary from week to week, ensuring there is always something new to enjoy.

Fall season is in full swing at Scott’s Country Market. The famous Zellwood Sweet Corn is sweet and tender as always and picked fresh daily for our market. They also have Kirby Cucumbers, okra, eggplant, squash, and zucchini grown right there at Long & Scott Farms. The cooler is stocked with even more fresh produce, Amish butter and cheeses, and some new bacon, sausages, and bratwurst.

Don’t forget to check out the decorations to find the perfect addition to your fall décor,

including everything from corn stalks to the perfect carving pumpkin! Also new this year to your market, they will have Christmas Trees!

Tavares brought back its Farmer’s Market and moved it to Fridays, just in time for the weekend! Held in Wooton Park, the vendors and shoppers enjoy the beautiful backdrop provided of Lake Dora and the frequent fly over of a seaplane. They have a nice assortment of quality vendors selling their goods. You can find fresh produce, baked goods, coffee beans, and gourmet pastas, as well as fresh seafood from Classy Roadside Shrimp. Homemade jams, locally produced honey, seasonings, handmade jewelry, and

landscape rocks can also be discovered when exploring the Market. The Tavares Prop Shop even has its own booth where Tavares shirts, postcards, and key chains can be purchased.

Mount Dora also offers the opportunity to enjoy fresh, locally grown produce. The Lakeside Inn hosts the Mount Dora Open Air Market on Sundays from 9am-2pm.

Held on the tennis courts at the historic inn, vendors offer the usual assortment of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and handmade crafts.

The face-to-face social interaction is now gone and it is hard to tell how much the student wrote on their own.

A solution to consider in this situation is making sure the elementary level students are taught the preliminary learning and research techniques. The internet can be a great source for learning, but once again, less energy is expended to complete a task due to technology advancement. Just by altering a few activities of daily living, and not relying on the technology advancement to take the easy way out, the health status of our society would increase.

Using technology to allow that extra 60 minutes in a day to work out at the wellness center or perform a home exercise routine is a positive way to embrace the techno savvy world we live in. Remember how we evolved 50 years ago, and what it took to complete basic chores on a daily basis. Think ahead about your future health and adjust your schedule to get in added physical activity where it is now eliminated without thought.

It will be exciting to see where our great inventors take us on the next technology journey, but do not forget to take time for your health.

echnology advancement and our health are not moving in a parallel direction towards a better quality of life. It is a fact that with our current possessions, we are expending fewer calories on an average daily basis. For example: in the 1970’s, people manually changed the television stations, and on average burned three calories. More currently in this decade, using the remote control to change the television channel burns 0.6 calories. The simple task of walking across the room to tune into another favorite show could add up many calories over days, weeks, and months.

Even our pets are suffering from our new tech savvy way of life. Before the days of plasma televisions and DVR (digital video recorder), the average person walked their dog for 30 minutes, burning approximately 125 calories.

In the present time, with five shows sitting on the “list” to plop down and watch after work, letting the dog out the door burns only two calories. In an effort to keep the dog out of the vet and decrease personal doctor visits, take the 30 minutes five days per week, and enjoy the fresh air with your furry friend.

When the rain falls and forms puddles on the roads, dirty water splashes on the car. This is an opportunity to burn a great amount of calories. Washing and scrubbing the car by hand is enough physical labor to burn 300 calories. These days, every minute counts in our over scheduled lives resulting in daily decisions which negatively influence our health. On the drive home from work, it is much easier to pull into the car wash, deposit six dollars and sit as the car gets an automatic wash. Upon exiting, walk around the car to adjust the mirrors and make sure the soap suds are clear, burning 282 fewer calories than

the manual wash and wax.

Lastly, motor technology has made major advancements since the late 19th century.

An example that has negatively impacted the health of some people is the invention of geared electric elevators. Many people with medical conditions benefit tremendously from the elevator in every multi floor building. But for those who would rather push a button than walk up a couple flights of stairs, here are the facts: walking up three flights of stairs burns at least 15 calories, taking the elevator burns 0.3 calories. Even if the stairs will take an extra few minutes, the effort is worth the cardiovascular benefit.

The 2.4 calorie loss using the remote control, along with 123 calorie deficit of opening the door to let the dog out, combined with the tremendous 282 calorie difference of driving through the car wash and finally 14.7 less calories by taking the elevator, equals 8,800 calories that could be burned in one month.

These four examples are minor changes that impact our daily activities, and as shown add up a great number of caloric expenditure options. Think about the facts the next time you approach the elevator or stairs.

Technology is also greatly affecting the youth. Specifically thinking about our student population, how do they complete homework assignments? Instead of walking to the college or local library to research textbooks and/or meet with peer study groups, students sign onto the computer to search the web. Once signed on, they update their Facebook news feed, read a couple articles related to the school assignment, cut and paste and the paper is almost complete. This takes away from the

They breathe W e’ve all sat through it. We’ve all gotten on a plane and sat through the boring pre-flight instructions.

I’m sure the flight attendants must be so bored of saying the same thing over and over again.

Have you ever listened to what they say? Of course you don’t anymore but I’m sure the first couple of times you did. Tell me, what do they say about the oxygen masks?

You know the ones that drop down from above in case of a change in cabin pressure?

Can you envision a more stressful situation on a plane? OK, maybe “put you head between your knees and brace for impact” may scare me a little more. I’ve never seen those masks pop out BUT if I ever do I know what to do.

Do you remember?

Yeah, you put yours on first then help your kids.

It’s a good metaphor for life if you ask me.

Eliminate toxic people. Clean up the messes in your life. Set up systems that make your life easier. Don’t go out with that friend just because they invited you.

The world is important. You are more important. Take care of yourself first. Make sure that you are getting what you need then, and only then, do you look out for the rest of the world. Trust me. If you are healthy and fit, you will have more time and energy to take care of others then if you are unhealthy and unfit.

uestion: What does the name “Chiropractor” mean and how old is the science? And I’ve been told that Chiropractors are not real Doctors…why is that?

Answer: The word Chiropractic comes from two Greek words “cheiros” which is defined as hand, and “Prakikos” which mean practice.

Putting these together you get the definition of chiropractic to be “done by hand.” The idea of Chiropractic philosophy can be traced back as far as the ancient Egyptians, but the modern chiropractic is only a little of 100 years old.

The stigma that chiropractors are not real doctors is really completely false, and a big misconception. Let’s look at the facts in education and compare 11 different course categories of chiropractic and medical education. For the ease of reading I will state the course, then the chiropractic hours required, and then the medical school hours required this will make it easy to compare the education of each doctor. Lets start with Anatomy; 456 vs 215, Physiology; 243 vs 174, pathology; 296 vs 507, chemistry/ biochemistry; 161 vs 100, microbiology; 145 vs 145, diagnosis; 408 vs 113, neurology; 149 vs 171, psychology/psychiatry; 56 vs 323, obstetrics & gynecology; 66 vs 284, x-ray; 271 vs 13, orthopedics; 168 vs 2 totaling in chiropractic doctors having a minimum of 2419 hr and medical doctors have only 2047

as a minimum.

Chiropractic physicians must pass four levels of national board exams and a physical therapy exam, on top of them taking a state board exam and a laws and rules exam. These exams consist of both written and practical examination for clinical practice and x-ray interpretation.

Post graduate work can be done to become a board certified chiropractic radiologist, neurologist, orthopedist, internist, family practitioner, sports physician, rehabilitation specialists, clinical nutritionist, or pain management specialist.

What part of all of this is “not being a real doctor” I don’t know. Chiropractors do what they do because it works and for the millions of people each year that see chiropractors they know the truth. If you are one of those lucky people you know what it means to not have to take drugs, not get sick, and live healthier… ask them if their Chiropractor is a real doctor, see what they say…

Guardianship for My Elderly Parents I Have All of the Documents, I’m ready

Another problem seems to lie with how third parties view your elderly Mother and how she views herself, such as her refusing to believe that she needs your help beyond that of the normal helpful child. Sometimes, being elderly is just that, elderly; there may be some memory loss or just obnoxious behavior but just because your elderly Mother does not want to do what you recommend or tell her to do does not mean that she incompetent. However, there are other times when an elderly person does have dementia or other form of mental impairment beyond that of the normal aging process. The tricky part is trying to figure it out on your own; it is especially true if the dementia is in the beginning stages: Sometimes Mom is okay and sometimes she is not. When Mom is “okay” or at least has periods of being “okay” it can be frustrating trying to get the doctors or others to see that your Mother truly does need your assistance, as she may seem okay in the presence of

nonfamily members or others who do not know her as well.

Even if your elderly Mother planned ahead and had “all of the documents”, you may still need the court’s help to become the Guardian over your Mother’s “person” in order to make decisions for her such as where your Mother is going to live. Your Mother may have previously designated who she desires to be her Guardian, both over her person and/or over her possessions, by executing a “Declaration Naming PreNeed Guardian” (“Pre-Need Declaration”).

Although the court does not have to abide by the Declaration, it is given consideration and can be used to assist the court in the event a Guardianship of your elderly Mother is needed. A Pre-Need Declaration alone, without a court Order, does not make you a Guardian. Therefore, although you may have “all” of the documents, you may still need the Court’s help in order to be the Guardian over your elderly Mother’s person. So, the answer to the initial question remains, “maybe.”

our elderly Mother previously went to an attorney and had “all” of the documents drafted and executed when she was competent for a future time in case she becomes incompetent; the plan was to allow you, the adult child, to care for her. She properly executed a Durable Power of Attorney (“DPOA”), giving you the ability to take care of many legal affairs and manage her possessions, that is, her “property.” Your Mother also properly executed a Designation of Health Care Surrogate (“DHCS”) form, giving you the ability to make health care decisions for her in the event that she becomes incompetent.

She even properly created a Revocable Trust, which may also allow you to manage her property. Since your elderly Mother took the time and care to have these documents in place, will you, the adult child, still need to seek a court Order naming you the Guardian of your Mother? Maybe. Maybe? Yes, that is the typical attorney answer, avoiding the clear cut yes or no. It’s aggravating but unfortunately, many times there are just no black and white answers.

With the proper documents, it may not be necessary to seek a court Order naming you the Guardian over your Mother’s “property,” however, you may need to seek the court’s intervention and ask to be named the Guardian of the person, the body, of your Mother. A DPOA can be created to come into effect immediately or to come into effect only upon one being declared incompetent.

Although the DPOA and a Revocable Trust may allow you to control or manage your Mother’s property, such documents do not allow you to control your Mother’s “person.”

Also, the DHCS is limited to health care and to those times when your Mother has actually been “declared incompetent.”

Without being declared incompetent, your Mother has full right to make health care decisions on her own. By now you are starting to pick-up on the word “declared.”

For many documents and legal functions to take effect, a person must be “declared” incompetent before the documents can be used. In most cases, only a court or doctors will be able to “declare” a person incompetent. And, since in general it must

Another item you did not ask about was your life insurance. You will most likely lose it when you leave. I know company coverage is most likely less expensive, but in the world of changing jobs, you need to control your own coverage. I would advise you to purchase your own coverage outside of your employer. It is then yours, you control it and no matter where you work, you will still have it. I always show a variety of policies that can fit in your budget.

F

or the second year in a row, the Empty Bowls Fall Harvest Soup Supper was held in Wooton Park in Tavares on Monday, October 11th from 5-8pm. Supporters came out and selected a colorful hand painted bowl for a minimum donation of $10. Then, they could get in the soup line at one of the participating local restaurants to have their bowl filled. The concept is meant to simulate what it is like to experience standing in a soup line.

This year’s goal was to raise $10,000, which meant they needed to create 1000 bowls! Event founders and organizers, Juliette Davis and Donna Jackson recruited dozens of volunteers

to help make and paint the ceramic bowls, which double as a momento from the event.

Crowds showed up to choose their bowl and sample the amazing soups at the waterfront locale. Live music from David Willis and Olivia Hand, Ruth King, The French Connection, and Brian Smalley entertained the event goers which were scattered all over the park on benches, lawn chairs, and picnic blankets. A silent auction provided additional fundraising opportunity.

All of the monies raised at the Empty Bowls benefit were donated to food banks in Mount Dora, Leesburg, and Tavares.
