The 13th Annual Pig on the Pond BBQ Competition & Festival was held in Clermont on March 11th and 12th, under cloudless skies and perfect Spring weather. The event brings together families, friends, and anyone who likes a fun carnival atmosphere. Amongst the rides, vendors and various musical ensembles was the Great Chili Challenge, Robinson’s Racing Pigs, and of course, the barbeque competition.

The top 100 professional bass anglers in the country gathered in Tavares for the Sunshine Showdown Bassmaster Elite Series tournament, held March 10-13 on the Harris Chain of Lakes. Gainesville native Shaw Grigsby and host of the nationally syndicated One More Cast television show won $101,000 and a trip to the 2012 Bassmaster Classic by catching 20 bass weighing 75 pounds, 4 ounces during the four-day event.

The City of Tavares continues to grow its annual Planes, Trains, & BBQ event. Held on Saturday, April 2nd, throughout the “Entertainment District,” which is made up of Main Street and Ruby Street, the all day affair included the seaplane fly-in and Florida Barbeque Association sanctioned competition visitors have come to expect, but the fun didn’t stop there!

I

n the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours. – Mark Twain I’m certainly relating to these words of Twain. Since Spring began we have seen temperatures from the high 50’s to the low 90’s. Winds have rattled windows, hail has hammered vehicles, branches (and even a few possums) have been shaken loose from trees, and rain has flooded ditches and retention ponds all over Central Florida. However brutal the storms were, they managed to occur during the week, where they no doubt affected little league games and golf matches, but graciously spared our abundance of back to back festivals.

As I sat in Wooton Park, staring at the sky (as a pilot climbed higher and higher before cutting off his engine and plummeting towards the water below before pulling up into a new series of flips, dips, and turns), I couldn’t help but think “what a difference two days makes.� Our skies had been dark and angry, only forty-eight hours previous, and were now a clear and beautiful blue backdrop to the dazzling air show.

As you will see in this issue, this year’s festival season has been blessed with picturesque weather and thousands of residents and visitors felt the pull to be outdoors weekend after weekend to enjoy the food and fun!

FOCUS did our best to attend as many as possible and I hope you will enjoy the recaps and the photos!

At the time I am typing this I am excited to share that one month from today I will be getting on a plane and on my way to fulfilling one of my biggest dreams. Those of you that read my ramblings each month may remember from The YMCA Healthy Kids Day brings children and families together years past my complete obsession by providing education, activities and experiences that teach good health and foster connections. Through fitness, sports, fun, healthy with the Kentucky Derby. I have habits and shared interests at the Y, kids and families achieve decorated and worn a hat every greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body. Put more play into your family’s day. Start at the Y. year, as I sat at home watching on television and sipping my THE Y OFFERS DIFFERENT WAYS TO KEEP homemade mint julep. Tavares receives Clean Marina Designation The state Department of Environmental Protection acknowledged the city’s environmental practices at its seaplane base and marina.

The base and marina was designated a “clean marina” by the agency, which recognizes marinas that follow specific environmentally-friendly guidelines. The program is voluntary. The city had to meet a number of conditions above the normal practices regulated for state marinas.

Tavares hosts two weekends of antique and classic boats

bevy of boats from all over the country flooded the downtown streets, Wooton Park, and the marina as the City of Tavares welcomed the Classic Raceboat Association and the Sunnyland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society for two weekends of boat lover’s heaven.

The Classic Raceboat Association kicked off the fun with the Fifth Annual Spring Fling Raceboat Regatta on March 19th & 20th.

Hydros, Jersey Skiffs, Gentlemen’s Racers/ Gold Cups, Flat Bottoms, Runabouts and other classic race boats demonstrated their speed by performing flybys in a race-like setting on a 1 ½ mile oval course throughout the two day event.

Many of the classic race boats stuck around, as they were the featured boat at this year’s Sunnyland Antique & Classic Boat Festival the following weekend, March 25th -27th.

The three day event included displays of over 350 vessels, in water and on land. The boat exhibit, combined with the nautical flea market, Ship Store, boat building

demonstrations, a seaplane fly over, food court, and beer garden provided plenty of appeal to the thousands of event goers. The ever popular amphi-cars offered rides in exchange for a small donation, as well as performed their traditional “splash-in” on Saturday. The city also offered Water Taxi rides between Tavares and Mount Dora for $5 each way for those visitors who wanted to visit the neighboring town, who was hosting their Annual Spring Collectibles & Crafts Show.

The Sunnyland show continues to be one of the largest assemblies of Antique and Classic wood boats in North America.

he 13th Annual Pig on the Pond BBQ Competition & Festival was held in Clermont on March 11th and 12th, under cloudless skies and perfect Spring weather. The event brings together families, friends, and anyone who likes a fun carnival atmosphere. Amongst the rides, vendors and various musical ensembles was the Great Chili Challenge, Robinson’s Racing Pigs, and of course, the barbeque competition. While the location at the Waterfront Park is the same, the previous month saw a facelift in the form of a permanent waterfront pavilion.

Many folks bring their families out to enjoy the carnival rides and spend quality time with their kids, but the barbeque competition is also high on everyone’s list. Not only is it a fierce competition in the barbeque world, but it’s inspirational to the backyard barbeque chefs. John Aquilino commented, “Personally I want to become a professional barbeque person in the future.” He makes his own sauces and rubs at home. “It’s more of a Texas

or Memphis style,” and the wives at the backyard barbeques judge the guys. In the serious world of barbeque, congratulations to Unknown BBQ, who claimed Grand Champion title this year.

Shawn Allison of Lake County, or the Sauce Man, has made a name for himself with his barbeque and hot sauces. Allison ventured into the sauce creation world after a job layoff. Previously, he’d made bread and butter pickles for the family, but found he had a talent for sauces, including his best-seller, Ghost Tonic. Allison said, “I didn’t hear about the ghost pepper until two years ago,

and I wanted to make it where I can capture a lot more of the market than the macho guy, or macho girl that wants the super hottest thing they can find. The Ghost Tonic is such a good blend, and well-balanced with flavors.”

As for the Great Chili Challenge, displays were unique, like Brad Dorr’s Krappy Chili, served from a pot positioned in a porcelain throne. Dorr returns from winning last year.

“We use ‘recycled goods.’” With a sincere smile upon his face, “We just cook by taste.

It’s all about having fun, but it’s more fun when you win.”

Youth Spotlight Amanda McDade F Article by: Dylan Holseth

or the first time ever, this monthโ s FOCUS Youth Spotlight features an athlete. Amanda McDade (also known as Mandi), is an outstanding volleyball player. Amanda is 18 years old and is a senior at Eustis High School. Her passion for volleyball started in the eighth grade.

In her high school she played 2 years on the Junior Varsity volleyball team, and 2 years on the Varsity volleyball team for Eustis High School. This season her Varsity volleyball team had an amazing record of 19-4! Amanda has won multiple awards, like the Junior of the Year award last year, her junior year, and she also won the Leading Motivator award this year. She is currently playing club volleyball with Florida Excel and her team has taken 1st place silver in two tournaments so far. Three years prior to playing club volleyball with Florida Excel

she played club volleyball with Eustis Club Volleyball. Her coach for both volleyball leagues, and the volleyball coach for Eustis High School, is Teresa Wade. Outside of club volleyball, Amanda has also competed in some beach volleyball tournaments here locally. Amanda has given back to her community by volunteering for the Teen Court Program held here locally in Lake County. For Teen Court she played the roles of juror, defense attorney and prosecutor. Amanda hopes to continue her love and passion for volleyball at the next level in college. She is currently looking for a school, in hopes of doing that beginning this fall. Amanda McDade is an inspiring young athlete with such a great list of accomplishments going into college! The FOCUS team wishes Amanda the best of luck as she continues her love for volleyball.

Many people don’t realize the economic impact that a tournament like this has on a city like Tavares. Many anglers spend more than a week here, some with their families. They come before the tournament to practice. They rent hotel rooms, eat in restaurants and buy gasoline here. We’re going to have extensive coverage on national television -- and that’s worth millions.”

Grigsby shared the grassy pocket in the back of the dead-end canal with Grant Goldbeck of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Goldbeck took second with 15 bass going 67 pounds, 14 ounces. Both fished beds only a few yards from each other in the 2.5-acre honey hole. Goldberg dragged an Xcite Raptor Tail craw jig in Okeechobee craw color along the bottom. He made an amazing comeback after placing 97th

on Day 1 with only 1 pound, 1 ounce. On Day 2, he caught 27 pounds, 1 ounce to vault into 16th place. On Day 3, he added 22 pounds, 15 ounces, moving into second behind Grigsby.

Stephen Browning of Hot Springs, Arkansas, finished third with 66 pounds, 9 ounces. Fresh off his fourth Bassmaster Classic victory, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Michigan, landed in fourth with 65 pounds, 13 ounces, followed by his nephew Jonathon VanDam. Fishing his rookie season, the younger VanDam brought in 56 pounds, 13 ounces. Matt Greenblatt of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, took lunker honors with a 10-pound, 4-ounce fish.

“It’s always great coming to the Lake County area for a tournament,” said Dave Precht, the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society senior director of publications. “The Elite Series is the cream of the cream of bass tournaments. We like to go to places where the anglers can catch a lot of big fish. It was good to see so many local fans coming out to the weigh-in and having a great time.”

For example, illegally setting off a fire extinguisher could actually lead to felony charges. Additionally, the new adult is also now required to support himself as it is no longer the parents legal responsibility unless there is a court order stating otherwise. For the 18 year old new adult, males must also register for the selective service.

Just because a new adult “can buy a car� without the parent’s consent, does not mean he should not seek the parents advise.

New adults may not always be experienced enough to understand that buying a car is a legal contract, binding, with legal ramifications. The new adult can sue on his own behalf and be sued. Samples of the types of contracts a new adult can enter into when just a day earlier he could not included school loans, car loans, employment contracts and rental contracts.

The new adult needs to know that to be legally binding, some contracts may be verbal with nothing in writing. Whether

Turning 18, the “age of majority� in Florida, is one of many milestones to come and is generally when one legally becomes an adult. A person under 18 can become an adult via a legal process called “emancipation.� Emancipation is not exactly an easy process, however, once completed the minor, regardless that he is under the age of 18, will also be an adult without the benefit of being protected under the laws as a minor. Parents and new adults should be aware that along with the joys of being an adult, there are many new legal responsibilities.

What can new adults do? Well, they are still legally too young to drink alcohol, as you must be 21 years old in Florida.

However, the new adult may now vote, enter into contracts, make a Last Will and Testament, consent to medical treatment without the approval of the parent and may live independently, outside of the parent’s control. Sounds great. BUT, slow down, stop and think. The new adult will also be responsible and charged as an adult for any crimes he commits, even if they are with their buddies who are still only 16 or 17 years old. Although minors could be charged as an adult depending on the seriousness of the crime, what may be a slap on the wrist for the 17 year old for

The new adult also needs to understand what it is to have “good� credit and the importance of good credit. Unfortunately, many new adults enter into car contracts and credit card contracts without the experience necessary to understand the full responsibilities, having ruined their credit ratings while still in their teens! Bad credit can often take 5 to 7 years to clear up, sometimes even longer. Fortunately, there are ways in which the new adult can start building good credit: Working, paying bills on time, starting a savings account and using credit cards wisely.

New adults should enjoy their new found “freedom� but understand that with freedom comes responsibility.

he City of Tavares continues to grow its annual Planes, Trains, & BBQ event. Held on Saturday, April 2nd, throughout the “Entertainment District,” which is made up of Main Street and Ruby Street, the all day affair included the seaplane fly-in and Florida Barbeque Association sanctioned competition visitors have come to expect, but the fun didn’t stop there! The air show was back with four daredevil stunt pilots taking to the skies at 11 am & 2 pm to the amazement of the crowds gathered on the shore of Lake Dora. With dips, dives, flips, and rolls, these pilots put on a spectacular demonstration!

Kids could cool off in the Splash Park or burn off energy in Wooton Wonderland before enjoying the Classic Car show with Mom and Dad. New to the event this year, classic cars lined both sides of Main Street, while City Hall played host to a model train display.

At noon, the City celebrated its new electric charging stations with a ribbon cutting behind the Prop Shop. This station is just

As the sun went down, the crowds shifted to the other end of the shoreline, where the much hyped waterfront concert would take place.

Michael Ray entertained the crowds while they waited for the gates to open, followed

by Hayfire on the main stage, before Country music sensation Colt Ford took over. To the delight of the nearly 2500 ticket holders, Ford performed a mix of his own original music, as well as popular cover songs.
