2025 Plant City Pig Jam

n November 21 and 22, 31 competition barbecue teams competed in the annual Plant City Pig Jam. These pitmasters compete for bragging rights and cash prizes, showcasing their skills in four categories: pork ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. Teams also participated in the ancillary sauce, margarita, steak, and dessert categories.

This year, Tillman’s BBQ, based in Coral Springs, FL, was named the Grand Champion by the Kansas City Barbecue Society in the Master Series. The team placed first in Brisket and Pork, third in Chicken, and sixth in Ribs. This year’s reserve grand champion was Kings BBQ Team, based out of Jacksonville.

In the Backyard Series, Dogpatch Q from North Carolina was named the Grand Champion. Dogpatch Q won 2nd in Chicken, 4th in Ribs, 2nd in Pulled Pork, and 3rd in Brisket. Nuts & Butts BBQ Team, from Pinellas County, was named Reserve Grand Champion in the Backyard Series.

In the ancillary competitions, Plant City’s Smokin Aces placed first in the Sauce competition, and 2nd in the Dessert contest, and hometown teams JP BBQ & Catering placed first in the Steak contest. Dirt Road Smokers finished 3rd in the Margarita competition.

Kiwanis Club of Plant City to Host 67th Annual Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award Luncheon

T

he Kiwanis Club of Plant City will host the 67th Annual Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award Luncheon on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the Florida Strawberry Festival TECO Expo Hall. The doors will open at 11:00 a.m., and the buffet will begin at 11:30 a.m. The event program will begin at approximately 12:02 p.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m. The luncheon is open to the public and admission is $40 per person, payable to the Kiwanis Club of Plant City.

Beginning in 1960, the combined civic clubs have presented the Outstanding Citizen of the Year award to express their appreciation for these good citizens’ unselfish giving of their time, talents, and resources for the betterment of the community and the benefit of all.

In addition to the Kiwanis Club, the program is supported by civic clubs including the Plant City Chamber of Commerce,

Knights Elementary Assistant Principal Named New Principal of Dover Elementary School

n December 9, Hillsborough County Public Schools announced a new administrative appointment at its School Board Meeting.

Leanne Way was announced as the new principal of Dover Elementary School, located at 3035 Nelson Avenue. Way’s career in the district began in 2004 as a 5th-grade teacher at Knights Elementary School. She was later appointed to the school’s reading resource teacher and, in 2010, promoted to assistant principal.

Dover Elementary School principal Gina Becker is retiring, according to the school district. Her teaching career began in 1987 in Lakeland, and she transferred to Walden Lake Elementary in 1996.

“Throughout her time in the district, she has taught and served as an administrator at six schools, including 20 years as a principal. What a remarkable legacy within her 35-year career in education!” said the district.

Plant City Celebrates the

Season P lant City celebrated the holiday season with two events that made spirits bright. On December 4, Plant City gathered for the annual Lights of Love, presented by the SFBH Foundation, and the following night, December 5, thousands lined the streets for the annual Plant City Christmas Parade.

Lights of Love, held in McCall Park, serves as the city’s official tree lighting ceremony. Live entertainment is provided by the First Baptist Church Christmas Band and the church’s kids’ choir, performing a selection of Christmas carols. Attendees took photos with Santa; funds raised benefited the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at South Florida Baptist Hospital.

At 7 p.m., the crowd counted down as Santa flipped the switch, lighting not only the Christmas Tree but thousands of lights that adorn McCall Park. The Christmas lights put a festive feeling in the air as family and friends gathered to take photos in front of them.

The following night, Friday, December 5, thousands of people lined North Collins Street, Reynolds, and Wheeler Street for the annual Christmas Parade. The parade featured city and county officials, pageant winners, marching bands, civic organizations,

businesses, churches, and schools, along with Christmas characters such as elves and Grinches waving to the crowds. Beads and candy were galore as Plant City got into the Christmas spirit at this small town tradition. Santa came to town on his sleigh as the final float featured in the parade.

Kiwanis Club Provides Christmas Gifts for More Than 1300 Local Kids

O

ne thousand three hundred Plant City kids will wake up to presents under the tree, thanks to the Plant City Kiwanis Club’s Christmas for an Angel program.

Sharon Moody, the club’s president, said the club reached out to 18 elementary schools and three Headstart programs in Hillsborough County to determine which students are in the greatest need.

With the generosity of employees at Stingray Chevrolet, local kids will receive multiple gifts to open on Christmas Day. Stingray Chevrolet delivered a full box truck of toys to the Kiwanis Club on Thursday, December 4. The Kiwanians then divided the toys and delivered them to each school. Moody thanked the Stingray Chevrolet employees for being “a blessing” to ensure that a single child does not go without a Christmas.

South Florida Baptist Hospital, Winn-Dixie, Team Chancey led by realtor Tammy Chancey, and Hope Lutheran Church also donate toys each year.

Moody says the late Billy Herold would typically shop for toys on behalf of the Rotary Club, and the nonprofit has decided to continue honoring Herold by making a monetary donation to the Christmas with an Angel program. The Plant City Kiwanis Club is also thankful for the generous contributions from individuals in the community.

Some children ask for a new bike, art supplies, or a baby doll; whatever they ask for, these generous donors make their Christmas wishes come true.

“This project has been going on for 35 years, started by Commissioner Ron Brown, who is deceased,” said Moody. “It’s grown over the years. We appreciate the sponsors, partners, and volunteers. This is a huge project to undertake, but it is very appreciated.”

BayCare awards Jill Moon with the Lifetime Achievement Award

F

or 56 years, Jill Moon has been part of the fabric of South Florida Baptist Hospital, and on December 3, BayCare recognized Moon as the recipient of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Moon is the longesttenured employee at BayCare, among the 33,000+ employees across the health system.

Moon, a Medical Staff Coordinator, said she was honored to be recognized

by BayCare as one of three recipients. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to those “whose dedication and leadership have shaped our organization and inspired countless colleagues. They exemplify what it means to serve with heart and purpose, and their legacy continues to guide us toward a future rooted in compassion and innovation.”

In her tenure at South Florida Baptist Hospital, Moon has witnessed the hospital transform from a small emergency room on Alexander Street to the state-of-the-art, six-floor hospital it is today on North Park Road. She has held several clerical positions throughout her 50 years at South Florida Baptist Hospital.

“Her professionalism, warmth, and kindness are an example to all who have had the privilege to know her,” said SFBH on its official Facebook page. “Thank you for all the years of love and dedication, Jill! Congratulations on this honor.”

fter Florida native Mandy Zeigler earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!), she spent 24 years in education. She taught in secondary and higher levels, as well as corporate training/development in both the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.

Today, she and her husband, Jeff, own a FISH Window Cleaning® Franchise here in Plant City, where she serves as Director of Sales and Scheduling. “We decided to invest in something we could build together and hopefully, one day pass on to our kids. We especially appreciate the company’s roots in family and Christian values. FISH aims to pour into its employees, strives to provide strong customer service while helping to brighten and beautify our community, and does not focus on a hard-sales approach.

When asked about her favorite food at Fred’s, Mandy replied: That’s easy – their green beans! I could eat platefuls with nothing else.

And to make the world a better place, she shared: Smile more and laugh often.

Describe a little about yourself and your family.

Although I tried to leave Florida after graduating with my undergrad in early 2003, the good Lord had other plans. My first job was with a Clearwater advertising agency 20 minutes from where I grew up. That move back ‘home’ led me to meet my husband on July 4, 2003. In our 20 years of marriage, we’ve enjoyed quite the journey together! We have two children: one in high school, the other in elementary, a dog, and a handful of chickens. We moved recently from Tampa to be closer to our office here in lovely Plant City.

Describe your career path before establishing your FISH franchise.

My professional journey began in a small advertising boutique agency in Clearwater. In my early 20s, long hours and cool photo shoots for print and TV ads were pretty cool. But, after meeting Jeff, who was a guidance counselor at a Pinellas County high, the hours and holidays seemed too good to pass up. So, I happened into education. I was middle school classroom teacher for almost seven years before becoming an Ed Tech trainer, teaching staff and faculty across Pinellas County schools how to use SMART Boards, Apple Podcasting

Labs, iPad labs, and all things techie for the learning environment. I moved into instructional design when the county began incorporating online learning and from there began designing, writing, and building online courses for grades 6-12.

After almost a decade of online course design, I moved into instructional design for healthcare, and then a few years later into developing online sales training and development for pharma.

Which hobbies or pastimes do you enjoy?

I love playing the piano during extra time. It helps me zone out and clear my mind. In the past, I’d lure the kids and dogs to sleep. Now, it’s my secret weapon to get everyone up and moving in the morning. For family time, we enjoy activities like kayaking, water sporting (pretty much any kind), playing sports in the yard, board games, or golfing - we love all of it! I like to diamond paint, too.

What do you appreciate most about life in Plant City?

While searching to open our FISH office, we loved the small town feel and Hallmark Channel vibe here, but even more - the kindness we felt and always feel from our office neighbors, local businesses, the Plant City Chamber, and all the incredible and amazing residential and commercial customers who’ve trusted our services. I’m like a kid when I see the railroad crossing light up and the train pass by, albeit too quickly. That fascinates and terrifies me at the same time.

Something fun, funny, or meaningful – If I can build it off Pinterest or make something with a story or purpose behind it, those are the best! I also believe treating people right and being good to one another is important. Just showing kindness and a little bit of positivity can break down walls and build meaningful relationships.

New Year’s Eve! Like other events across the world that evening, Plant City’s New Year’s Eve parties will feature a celebratory meal, music and cymbals, and perhaps a toast or two, or more.

New Year’s Eve at the Red Rose with music and Celebrations!

T

he Red Rose Inn was a big part of many Plant City celebrations over the years. Price was no object for those couples celebrating at the Red Rose Ballroom in 2004. One hundred ninety-nine dollars secured your dinner and the party package, including music from two bands, a champagne toast, and a brunch on incredibly early New Year’s Day. Plus, another one hundred dollars bought you a hotel room in case you celebrated too much. Happy New Year!

Across town, the Plant City Cornerstone Center on Collins Street held a low-cost New Year’s party with a midnight breakfast for only ten dollars. Earlier generations celebrated downtown as well. The Plant City Courier in December 1928 reported that Stanley Dyer, the Hotel Plant’s manager, donated the hotel’s use for a New Year’s Eve benefit dance for local police and firemen.

How did all this come about?

The dawning of a new year, marked by the changing of the calendar, is often a time to establish new habits or to express confidence that the next year will be better than the previous one.

Many cultures celebrate with parades or other community-based ceremonies stressing unity, optimism, and gratitude, both a new beginning and a time of transition, with new doors being opened as time inevitably marches on.

In Plant City, the beginning of the new calendar year comes in the middle of the growing season for our signature crop, the winter strawberry. With an agriculturally based economy, however, the residents of Plant City have not always been free to ring in a new year with a party. The beginning of 2001, for example, brought extreme cold to Plant City, with low temperatures in the 20s. Several locals abandoned planned celebrations in order to protect their crops.

Despite these efforts, some five million dollars of damage was done to crops like strawberries and oranges. The Plant City area tropical fish industry also suffered several million dollars’ worth of losses due to that cold snap.

The new year also marks the tradition of New Year’s Resolutions, with individuals setting new goals, often only to be forgotten and abandoned in a few weeks. One recent study by Forbes said, “more people cite improved Fitness as a top resolution (48%) compared to improved Finances (38%), improved Mental Health (36%), Weight Loss (34%) and a new Diet (32%).”

As the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, residents wanting to copy New York City’s tradition of a ball drop picked the strawberry as the perfect local symbol to ring in the New Year at the stroke of midnight. In the early 1990s, Plant City had the Big Berry drop at the Union Depot on Palmer Street. The Berry dropped to celebrate the start of the New Year. Coffee and food were provided, and admission was free, but the celebration soon disbanded in part due to sponsorship issues.

A public celebration downtown was recently revived by the Plant City Main Street organization. Now, the Strawberry Drop features a giant, glowing Strawberry lowered from above with the help of a crane, accompanied by live music, food trucks, and many activities for children, all to welcome in the New Year!

When 2026 starts, whether you’re downtown celebrating at a local venue, traveling to a bowl game, or simply at home, may each of you embrace the possibilities that come with a fresh start and make the most of the year ahead!

No one knows and loves Tampa Bay like Plant City dad and REALTOR Michael Sherrard. From the coastal communities in Pinellas County to the historic homes in downtown Plant City, and everywhere in between, Mike knows Tampa Bay real estate inside and out.

Featured on the front cover, Mike discussed his journey into real estate, the lessons he learned from his Midwestern upbringing, and how he is making an impact on the Tampa Bay real estate industry. Meet “The 1% Listing Agent,” Michael Sherrard of Charles Rutenberg Realty, Inc. For those who don’t know you, tell our readers a little about yourself.

I’m originally from Louisville, Kentucky, but I grew up in a small town in Indiana. That Midwest upbringing shaped my values early on—doing what you say you’ll do, showing up on time, and keeping your word. Those principles were ingrained in me from a young age and continue to guide how I work and treat people today. I’m not big on excuses. If I make a commitment, I follow through.

Before transitioning into real estate, I spent much of my life as a chef. The restaurant industry taught me discipline, precision, and how to deliver under pressure—skills that translate perfectly into serving clients. I moved to Florida in 2006, worked in several beachside restaurants, and eventually decided to build something of my own when my son was on the way. That decision led me into construction, project management, and ultimately, real estate.

In 2016, I moved to Plant City, where I’ve raised my two boys, now 11 and 13. They’ve grown up their entire lives here, and as a family, we’re deeply rooted in the community.

My oldest son, David, played baseball for years, and I was very active in Plant City Little League—coaching, volunteering, and doing everything I could to support the kids and the program. Being involved in Little League was one of the most rewarding parts of my life outside of work.

take on more responsibility—first completing remodels under their guidance, and eventually managing all of their renovation projects. Soon after, I became their project manager, overseeing 15 to 20 flips per year. That experience gave me a deep understanding of both the construction side and the buying and selling process behind real estate investments.

As I became more involved, I realized that getting my real estate license could bring even more value to the group. My thought was simple: if I could list their properties at just 1%, they could stretch their budgets further—maybe remodel a bathroom they couldn’t previously afford or enhance features that would improve the home’s marketability. While that particular path didn’t unfold the way I envisioned, it sparked something bigger.

I decided to take that same principle—high-quality service at a lower cost—and offer it directly to homeowners. Today, as a “The 1% Listing Agent,” I help sellers keep more of their hard-earned equity and gain greater buying power as they move into the next chapter of their lives. The feedback has been incredible, and the savings are truly meaningful. Whether I’m helping someone sell a $300,000 home and save around $6,000, or an $800,000 house and save closer to $16,000, the impact is real and deeply fulfilling. Being able to provide that level of value while delivering full-service representation is what keeps me excited to help more families every day.

Share with us how technology helps you market a home and what sets you apart from other agents.

Technology plays a major role in how I market a home, because today’s buying process starts in the palm of a buyer’s hand. Nearly every search begins online, so my job is to make sure my clients’ homes stand out at first glance. I use highquality professional photography, virtual tours, detailed floor plans, and, when appropriate, Matterport 3D walkthroughs to create an immersive experience that captures attention immediately. When a buyer can explore a home from their phone as if they’re walking through it, it leads to faster, more serious interest.

Providing that level of digital presentation is something I’m committed to on every listing.

Michael says when he isn’t in the office, he spends all of his free time with his sons and his girlfriend.

As a family, they enjoy time at the beach, among other things.

What does “The 1% Listing Agent” mean?

Being “The 1% Listing Agent” is both a brand and a commitment I’ve made to homeowners across St. Petersburg and the surrounding coastal communities.

I charge just a 1% listing fee while still delivering full-service representation and premium marketing. That includes professional photography, detailed MLS marketing, strategic social media exposure, and, depending on the property, custom enhancements such as drone footage, floor plans, and tailored marketing campaigns to highlight the home’s unique features.

What truly sets me apart, beyond my 1% listing fee, is my responsiveness and personal connection with every client. I answer my phone. I call people back. I communicate clearly with both clients and other agents, and I tailor my communication style to what each client prefers—whether they want daily updates, weekly check-ins, phone calls, or text messages. My goal is to keep everyone on the same page and make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.

On the buyer side, I take a much more proactive approach than most agents.

Instead of waiting for clients to send me homes they find on apps, I actively hunt for properties that match their needs and send them options they may not have even considered. That level of involvement is missing in the industry today.

At the end of the day, I’m not focused on operating a massive website or building unnecessary overhead. My business is built on personal relationships, clear communication, and making sure each client feels genuinely supported. I work hard to negotiate the best deal possible while still keeping the transaction moving forward—and I always prioritize my clients’ needs above everything else.

My goal is simple: provide the same (or better) level of service that sellers expect from a traditional agent, but at a fraction of the cost so that they can keep more of their equity. Sellers pay 1% on the listing side, and the buyer’s agent compensation is left to the seller’s discretion. This model gives homeowners flexibility, savings, and full-service results—without the traditional price tag.

What do you do outside the office?

I don’t really have a traditional office—my “office” is usually a client’s kitchen table, the front seat of my car, or wherever we happen to be grabbing lunch. But outside of the real estate world, my life is centered around family and the things that bring us joy.

My journey in real estate actually began long before I ever held a license. I started a small hauling company after leaving the restaurant industry, which led to remodel work for a real estate investment group. Over time, they asked me to

I also enjoy thrifting and yard-saling, and I have a soft spot for DIY projects.

We often take on renovation projects at home, which is fun for me given my construction background, and my girlfriend—who is not only a great designer but also a real estate agent herself—makes an amazing partner in those projects. I love to travel as well, even if I don’t get to do it as often as I’d like.

At the end of the day, most of what I do outside of work revolves around family, creativity, and simply enjoying life.

The housing market is quite dynamic. What is your #1 tip for buyers trying to purchase their first home?

My number one tip for first-time buyers is to focus on finding a home that meets most of your needs—not necessarily every single one. It’s rare to find a house that checks every box and still fits comfortably within your budget, so concentrate on the essentials: the right location, a layout that works for your lifestyle, and the features that matter most to you, whether that’s a good school zone or a pool in the backyard.

Be prepared to make small sacrifices and look for opportunities to build equity over time. A home that needs a little TLC or a few updates shouldn’t scare you away. Those fixes can often be done gradually and can add value in the long run.

One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is trying to predict the market. The truth is, no one knows exactly what it will do—it can go up, down, or swing in ways no one expects. Instead of trying to time the market, focus on affordability and what makes sense for your personal situation.

Also, don’t let the search overwhelm you. Some buyers walk through 20 or 30 homes and end up more confused than when they started. Give each property a nickname or a standout detail to help you remember it, and make pros and cons lists to stay grounded in what you really want. And if you do find the home that genuinely feels perfect, don’t lose it because you’re afraid to make a strong offer.

If it’s everything you’ve been looking for, it’s worth securing.

What is the most common reason a property fails to sell? How can you help to combat that?

The most common reason a property fails to sell is almost always price—and right behind that is availability. They go hand in hand. Even if the price is perfect, a

home won’t sell if potential buyers can’t get in to see it. And even if availability is wide open, an overpriced house will sit on the market.

Where I truly add value is by helping sellers eliminate both obstacles with as little stress as possible. When a home has already been listed with another agent and isn’t moving, I can often lower the price and still help the seller net the same amount—or more—simply because I charge significantly less. My 1% listing fee allows sellers to maximize their equity without sacrificing the quality of service, marketing, or representation. That alone can instantly make a listing more competitive in the market.

On the availability side, I talk very openly with my clients about the importance of being “open for business.” Yes, we hope for a 24-hour notice, but we also need to be ready to tidy up quickly and step out when a buyer wants to see the home. No buyer expects perfection—they understand it’s a lived-in space—so what matters most is ensuring we don’t turn away potential interest. Many buyers won’t circle back if they’re declined the first time.

To help with this, I place a strong emphasis on maximizing early exposure. I encourage sellers to allow strong availability during the first weekend on the market, and I host open houses to get as many buyers through the door as possible without disrupting the seller throughout the week. This momentum often creates urgency, multiple interested parties, and better results overall.

With the right price and the right accessibility, a home has every opportunity to sell—and I work closely with my clients to make both of those pieces as easy and effective as possible.

RISING STAR Ethan

Joyner

A

t just 14 years old, Ethan Joyner is a standout eighth grader at Tomlin Middle School. Ethan has been named the final Rising Star of 2025, and for good reason. As a member of the Plant City Tennis League, he recently helped power his squad to a second-place finish in the Junior Team Tennis 18U division.

Now, with a silver medal in hand, Ethan is preparing to face high school-level competition at the 2025 Fall State Championship in Orlando—a challenge he welcomes with open arms.

Ethan’s relationship with the court began a decade ago. He picked up his first racket at age four and secured his first tournament victory by age ten. While his parents originally chose tennis as a starter sport, wondering if he was ready for contact sports, Ethan used that foundation to become a versatile athlete.

“Since then, I have played many different sports like flag football and soccer,” Ethan explains. “Which has helped me develop my skills as a team player, but also [gave me] the confidence in myself to get the job done on and off the court.”

Guiding him through this decade-long journey is Coach C. Shane Johnson of the Plant City Tennis Center. A fixture at the center since 2006, Johnson has been Ethan’s mentor since day one.

“He has taught me everything I know about tennis so far,” says Ethan. “He can sometimes be tough, but I know it’s only to make us all better and create muscle memory.”

That discipline translates to the classroom, where Ethan maintains straight As. Whether battling through illness during a tournament or practicing through blisters, his resilience is undeniable.

“I always want to do my very best at everything,” he says. “My parents and Coach Shane have motivated me to always keep going.”

Plant City, keep your eyes on this young talent. Ethan has his sights set on a scholarship to the University of Florida after high school. Go Gators!

Faith Marcus Grayson

ince January 2023, Marcus Grayson has served as the Gospel Preacher and Minister at the Laura Street Church of Christ. In their faith tradition, ministers are selected by church leaders according to the standards found in 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus.

A graduate of Harding University (1994) in Searcy, Arkansas, and the Florida School of Preaching (2005) in Lakeland, Florida, he previously ministered at the Manhattan Avenue Church of Christ in Tampa (2005–2008). He and his wife, Sheri, met at Harding University, where they both served in spiritual encouragement activities on campus. Married now for 32 years, they have one daughter, Faythe (“Faith”).

Brother Grayson’s career background also includes working in television news at several stations, including WTSP-TV 10 in Tampa; owning an audio/visual production company (HomeCast Media); teaching journalism as an adjunct at John Hopkins Middle School in St. Petersburg; and serving as a Deacon at the Brandon Church of Christ. He currently also serves as a Missionary to Barbados.

For relaxation, he is a hobbyist drone pilot who enjoys flying both cinematic and FPV drones. Growing up in Kansas City gave him a love for barbecue, so he especially enjoys smoking brisket, ribs, and chicken.

How did you come to faith in Jesus?

At age ten, I obeyed the Gospel at the Roswell Church of Christ in Kansas City, Kansas, where I grew up. My parents taught me the truth from Scripture, and I came to understand what it meant to follow Christ. I believed Jesus is the Son of God (John 8:24), repented of my sins (Luke 13:3), confessed Christ (Matthew 10:32–33), and was baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of my sins (Mark 16:15– 16; Romans 6:3–11). In baptism, I re-enacted the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:1–4), and from that moment on, I’ve been striving to live faithfully for Him. What do you enjoy most about your work?

Proverbs 11:30 says, “He who wins souls is wise.” We live in a broken world filled with lost souls, and like Jesus, I want to have compassion and do everything I can to bring people back to God. The Bible teaches that elders serve as pastors (Acts 20:28), while the preacher is the herald of God’s word. I hope one day to also serve as an elder (1 Peter 5:1–4), but my greatest joy as a preacher is bringing souls to Christ. I also travel to Barbados for mission work, and we support other missionaries connected with the Florida School of Preaching. There is no greater joy than baptizing someone into Christ and helping them grow in faith (Matthew 28:19–20).

Tell us about your church.

The Laura Street Church of Christ is a loving, active, and evangelistic congregation in God’s Kingdom—whether through door-knocking, community events, or mission work abroad. We love the Bible, and we love Jesus. It’s a wonderful, relatable place to belong.

How does Sheri share in ministry with you?

A preacher’s wife has a unique role: she supports, protects, and comforts her husband in the work. For more than three decades, Sheri has been a faithful, godly partner in ministry. Her great passion is teaching children and laying the foundation of faith for the next generation.

What advice would you offer regarding the Christian faith?

Don’t wait—get on the boat! In Genesis 6, Noah and his family entered the ark to be saved from the flood. Today, 1 Peter 3:21 explains that the “ark” is Christ, and salvation is found through baptism into Him. Sadly, in Noah’s day, many watched the ark being built for 100 years, but when the door closed, it was too late. When Jesus returns—or when our lives end—our fate will be sealed. Now is the time to obey the Gospel.

Additionally, as Peter said in 2 Peter 1:10, “make your calling and election sure.” Attend the church that feeds your soul with truth, not just emotions. Study the Bible carefully, obey Jesus fully, and be faithful until the end. If you’re unsure where you stand, I am always available to study and pray with you.

What do you enjoy about life in Plant City?

I love the small-town feel, the sense of community, the value of family, the respect for authority, and the way churches are part of the fabric of life here. Plant City is a diverse community, and that richness is a blessing.

Those beautiful words are from the opening song of the movie: A Charlie Brown Christmas. If you were a child or had children in the decades of the ‘60s or ‘70s, you knew no Christmas was complete without watching this one, as well Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and The Grinch that Stole Christmas.

Back then families gathered around their TV sets to watch the most wonderful, magical, and unforgettable kiddie programs for the young or young at heart. They also watched celebrity Christmas specials interspersed with commercial breaks to tempt us with the most fanciful holiday food, toys, and gift ideas we’d ever seen. Those specials left everyone in the holiday spirit and had their hungry viewers humming a few bars from a

song, jumping up and down for toys, and adding to Christmas wish lists!

Speaking of hungry…I just loved the yummy mouthwatering commercials like Sealtest Egg Nog when Santa poured himself a tall chilled glass of the creamy drink from a sparkling crystal punchbowl. Others I recall well included the delicious Butterball Turkey hot out of the oven; the Jello fruit ring on a silver platter; and the Brach’s chocolate covered peanuts, stars, or filled hard candies.

Have you ever savored Nestle’s piping hot cocoa with marshmallows or the Swift Premium Ham decorated with pineapples and cherries? I remember also the bubbling hot Velveeta Cheese Fondue, the Cracker Barrel Cheese slices sitting pretty on Sociables Baked Crackers, or my favorites of all…Kraft caramels melting in a pot on the stove just waiting for an apple, or the lady slicing a piece of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Cheesecake made with about two pounds of sugar and cream cheese? Those elegant food commercials made entertaining look so effortless!

The toy advertisements were something to behold. The writers and creators went out of their way to make you lose sleep, beg and plead with your parents, and have their products as number one on your Christmas list. The toy ads were aimed specifically for girls or boys. Girls saw commercials that made them want to stay home and be a housewife and mommy. For instance, we saw play kitchens with stoves, refrigerators, shopping carts, fake food, aprons, brooms, mops, pots and pans, Easy Bake ovens, baby dolls, tiny diapers, feeding bottles, diaper bags, baby beds and buggies, toy Vacuum cleaners, and beauty kits complete with lipstick and rouge.

Companies tempted little boys with commercials aimed to make them imagining themselves as rough and tough. They saw G.I. Joe dolls, pop guns, footballs, baseballs, Tonka trucks, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, tool sets, archery sets, chemistry sets, Erector sets, magic sets, Lincoln Logs, doctor kits, model planes and cars, Legos, radios, toy soldiers, Walkie Talkies, and trains on tracks.

Gift commercials aimed at adults included Norelco Electric shavers, Old Spice aftershave, Singer sewing machines, electric hair dryers, Hi-Fi stereos, perfume, Playtex undergarments, and liquor. WOW! The ”Super Star” Christmas specials I remember watching with my family were:

The Andy Williams Christmas Spectacular, which always featured his wife Claudine Longet, his children, his three brothers—Bob, Don, and Dick Williams—and The Osmond Brothers, along with other special guests; The Mitzi Gaynor Christmas Show; The Perry Como Show; and our family favorite—The Bing Crosby Christmas TV Special. Bing’s beautiful wife Kathryn and their three children always joined in to sing and dance along with such greats as Robert Goulet, The Carpenters, Twiggy, Mary Martin and even David Bowie. Oh, and I left out the Sonny and Cher Christmas Show of 1976. Like eggnog and mistletoe, Christmas wasn’t complete without a visit from this pair. Their show featured a rockand-roll Christmas medley with Bob “Captain Kangaroo” Keeshan, who danced up a storm.

They always closed with a touching version of “I Got You Babe.”

So now, let’s get back to Charlie Brown. This month, A Charlie Brown Christmas celebrates its 60th Anniversary. It’s first airing was on December 9th, 1965. That night in our living room, my sister and I watched along with our parents. I was three then and my sister Karen was almost six. Mother was 31 and Daddy was 34. I can honestly say that we, as a family, watched A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas together every year until my father passed away in 1999 and my mother passed in 2019. For those special programs we put everything aside so we could be together and fill our hearts with the love and light-hearted innocence of a child. We could identify with every one of those characters—the Grinch, Frosty, Rudolph, and Charlie Brown—because they all had struggles and problems and WE all have struggles and problems. Through their stories they taught us that you get up the next day and you keep moving on. How profound!

I remember the first time that I sat alone and watched A Charlie Brown Christmas for the fiftyfifth time. When the show started with the Charlie Brown gang ice skating on the pond and singing “Christmas Time is Here,” it felt bittersweet. I wanted so much for my parents to be with me, but they weren’t. I had to stop and think about the lesson The Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty, and Charlie Brown have been teaching all these years. In spite of your aches and pains and your troubles and woes, YOU GET UP THE NEXT DAY AND YOU KEEP MOVING ON!
