Foreword focus Individualised Support Services believe in the concept of people with a disability making a positive difference in their own lives, and in the lives of others. We assist people to achieve their personal goals and to live a full and abundant life. To achieve this, it is essential that we have a skilled and knowledgeable team. As an organisation, we are committed to the ongoing personal and professional development of our team.
As part of ‘growing our own’ highly skilled workforce, and addressing skills shortages identified in the disability sector, the focus Training and Development Program has been developed. The program has also been designed in consultation with the management team and industry experts to identify common themes to build knowledge and skills. The program is not intended to meet every individual’s technical or vocational skill gaps – this may be achieved through external training. Opportunities also exist for team members to undertake further study through the focus Internal Nationally Accredited Traineeship programs or externally through the Scholarship Program.
As we move into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) over the next couple of years, our training program will need to begin to use technology to assist with the training of an increasingly mobile workforce. This year we have added some e-learning courses to the training program to gauge the effectiveness of this mode of training. I invite you all to have a go at some of these courses; it is the way of the future.
As with all training programs, there will be some components that are compulsory, and others that Active Support Leaders / Managers may recommend that you attend. I trust you will find the programs available are valuable in enhancing your skill base, assisting you in more effectively carrying out your role, and in contributing to your ongoing professional development within the organisation. I encourage you to participate and make the most of the learning opportunities presented to continue to contribute to your own and the organisation’s success.
Gail Foster Chief Executive Officer
1
Introduction The program is aimed at enhancing individual staff member’s performance in line with the Strategic Plan, by increasing the organisation’s overall efficiency and effectiveness. A number of expert training providers and facilitators will be engaged to deliver some of our specialist programs, together with internal subject matter experts providing a range of specific programs.
Training will be provided in different formats to accommodate differing learning styles. Generally training will be conducted in a group setting - but there may be the option for some training to be provided by self paced learning or in small groups. Sessions may be provided for specific houses or targeted at specific team members.
Managers, Active Support Leaders and 2IC Active Support Leaders will participate in to a range of seminars, conferences and workshops during the year which further demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to ongoing professional development of our team at every level. Feedback from participation in training programs is encouraged and an evaluation form will be provided at the end of each training course. Our aim is to keep on improving!
Please refer any questions to the HR Admin Team on 5981 5100. We hope you find the program enjoyable and that it contributes to enhancing your skills and knowledg base.

Questions/Considerations Who can attend the various courses? Each program outline will detail the target audience. Please note that some programs are only available to certain staff due to the nature of the program.
Will I be paid to attend training? Permanent staff will be paid to attend training. Casual staff will not be paid unless the training is deemed compulsory to undertake the role.
How do I register my interest to attend a training session? You may request to attend sessions by completing a Staff Development Application form, have it approved by your Active Support Leader and sent to the HR Admin Team. Training should be in response to an identified skill or knowledge gap and be documented in your annual Professional Development Record. No form is necessary for compliance/compulsory training sessions so you will be advised by the HR Admin Team of your requirement to attend. Opportunities also exist throughout the year to participate in other programs, for example Health and Safety related training. You will be advised of these opportunities via email, or by your Active Support Leader.
What if training is required & it’s not covered by the Training & Development Program? The intention of this program is to deliver training on organisational themes. It should be noted that the program cannot meet every learning and development requirement; however, flexibility has been built into the program to allow for new or changing training needs. A range of other specialist training programs may also be available. You are encouraged to consult with your 2IC, Active Support Leader, Manager and the HR Admin Team to identify other suitable options.
Vocational Specific/Technical training Where a skill or knowledge gap is identified relating specifically to a team member’s role or to support clients there is an option to consult with your 2IC, Active Support Leader or Manager in regard to job specific, vocational specific or technical training required. A variety of options may be considered in how this skill/knowledge can be acquired e.g. on the job training, shadowing a more experienced staff member etc.
3
When will courses listed in the Training & Development Program be held? To give you the greatest level of flexibility we have identified a considerable number of courses which are programmed through the Training and Development Calendar. We endeavor to provide courses on-site in the Dromana Training Room. A Training and Development Calendar will be available on a 6 monthly basis i.e. Jan – June and Jul – Dec of each year. As further dates are scheduled, or any changes made, the information will be updated. The calendar is located on the shared drive/training. Training confirmation will come from the HR Admin Team via Work Buddy and email.
What if my Training & Development needs change? If there has been a subsequent skill/knowledge gap identified for a staff member and they are required to attend a particular course, or if a staff member changes roles during the course of the year, please contact the HR Admin Team to discuss options.
Things to consider when requesting / approving training To maximise the return on investment for focus and the individual for any training, Practice Managers and Active Support Leaders should consider: • Relevance of the learning to the staff members position (i.e. an identified skill or knowledge gap) • Ability to apply the skills/knowledge obtained in the workplace • Individual staff members commitment and self-motivation in attending and completing the learning • Workload of both the House and the Staff Member
4
How will I know when I am scheduled to attend training? You will be advised of your confirmed place generally via an email or Work Buddy. Details of date, venue and time will be advised. To confirm your place on the program, you must accept the meeting request invitation at your earliest convenience as we often have a waiting list and need to plan and organise training resources and replace shifts etc.
What if I need to cancel? Please let us know if you cannot attend a course or training session at least 5 business days prior to the course commencement. This will allow any others on a waiting list an opportunity to be offered your place. If you are unable to attend on the day due to exceptional circumstances, e.g. sickness on the day, please advise the HR Admin Team on 5981 5100 (or arrange for someone within your team to do so). Staff members that do not give adequate notice will be required to pay for their position in the course. Courses are subject to a minimum number of participants and may be cancelled if this number is not met.
On the day of scheduled training As a courtesy to your colleagues and the facilitator presenting the program, staff members are required to arrive at least five minutes prior to the scheduled commencement of the training program. This is to ensure that sessions commence on time and that the trainer/facilitator’s presentation is not interrupted by latecomers.
Etiquette As a courtesy to your colleagues please allow every staff member to voice an opinion without interruption, do not have private conversations while the facilitator is speaking and turn off or put mobile phones on silent. Messages can be checked during breaks.
Work Buddy Clocking in / out All staff are required to clock in and out of Work Buddy before and after training or you will not be paid.

PEG feeding is used where patients cannot maintain adequate nutrition with oral intake. However, the simplicity of PEG feeding has led to some to be concerned about its use when there is little or no clinical benefit. PEG feeding tubes are now increasingly used for enteral nutrition for both children and adults. PEG may be used with a jejunal extension.

Manual Handling Purpose/Target Group This program has been developed for all FOCUS staff to increase awareness and skills relevant to service the needs of residents. Also to ensure that staff have a clear understanding of the principles relating to Manual Handling. Did you know that health care workers have a higher than average chance of being seriously injured at work? Manual handling is the biggest cause of workplace injury in Victoria. Manual handling means using your body to exert force to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, move, hold or restrain objects or people. Hazardous manual handling can lead to serious musculoskeletal injuries. These can be debilitating and long-term conditions that can severely affect a person's quality of life. According to Worksafe Victoria your employer is required to protect you from manual handling injuries, at the same time, you have a general duty to take reasonable care for your own health and safety, and that of others who may be affected by your work, and to cooperate with your employer’s efforts to make the workplace safe. * Training is compulsory for ALL staff members and a refresher when required.
