He met Jason Ridgeway after starting the project and they decided to collaborate with Jason decorating the speakers with his beautiful artwork. Jason’s traditional indigenous paintings turn a piece of equipment into a work of art.

I soon discovered such a system was way outside of what I could ever afford, good speakers can easily exceed $10k. But, I soon learnt that the DIY speaker hobby was the affordable way to get great sound.

i Guys. Atlas can you tell us a bit about how the Speaker Project got started and where the idea came from?

The idea really started a decade ago, when I heard a high-end audio system for the first time. I had never heard recorded music sound so real. You know that

This led me on a decade long journey of building my own and chasing that high fidelity sound that I first heard. The loudspeakers I developed after years of practice had all the sonic characteristics of the expensive speakers found at the high-end audio stores, but more than that, I felt proud of what I made, and this is something that money can’t buy.

Seeing everyone enjoy the process and the sense of achievement gained was the moment that made me think, I want to do this again.

And this was the very moment that The Speaker Project was born.

How does the project work and what makes it unique?

I think what makes The Speaker Project unique is that it’s the only inperson speaker building course on the planet right now. But more than that, it sets out to make speaker building easily accessible as all the material and tools are provided along with my guidance.

Seeing everyone enjoy the process and their sense of achievement gained was the moment that made me think, I want to do this again. And this was the very moment that The Speaker Project was born.

After years of doing it as a hobby some mates of mine asked if I could put on a speaker building session for them. I was hesitant in doing it to be honest, but with some encouragement I did it, and you know what, it was an absolute blast!

I used to only run inperson courses both in Sydney and on my parents’ farm. Then COVID came along, which prompted me to make a series of instructional videos so people could enjoy the process from their home. I think the most important part has been focusing on making the course fun and achievable for everyone no matter their skill level.

How long would you say it has taken you to perfect the speaker design?

One of the toughest parts of the DIY speaker hobby is developing a design that sounds good and works well with all genres of music. For instance, the Trohet’s, which are my flagship model, have taken six years to perfect.

Is the course the only way people can get your speaker designs?

I’ve recently started building speakers to suit people who don’t have the time to build them.

How did the two of you come together to collaborate on this project?

I didn’t know that Atlas produced speakers.

He approached me with the idea and we went back and forth for a little while and the artwork and speakers were delivered.

We chatted and shared our thoughts and experiences with working on the things that bring us joy. The conversation soon progressed to the idea of Jason painting the exterior of the speakers in Indigenous-themed artwork. I think the idea is symbolic of how music brings people together, both in Australian indigenous culture and other cultures too.

Jason, you have actually created artworks on many different mediums, what has it been like working with the speakers?

Yes I have created artworks on a number of different mediums from surfboards, skateboard decks, helmets, footy boots, didgeridoo, boomerangs, signage, canvas, tables, artworks turned into clothing for fashion shows, and for sport community groups, schools, and now speakers.

Working on the speakers was a new challenge but one that I accept with open arms. I had to paint one face at a time.

Can you tell us about the collaboration between the two of you and what you enjoy about being a part of it?

Atlas is an amazing person. He has a lot of experience with life in general and has a great nature. I didn’t know that Atlas produced speakers. He approached me with the idea and we went back and forth for a little while and

How do you come up with new designs for the speakers, and what is your design process like for each one?

Coming up with new design concepts for the speakers is pretty easy. It’s all about coming together, gathering, sharing experiences and gaining knowledge. Music does this and art also does it, so what better way to appreciate that than to produce an exceptional product then to put this into an artwork that tells that type of story.

How long does each set of speakers usually take you to paint?

If I’m in the zone they could take me 5-7 days with dry time for each face.

Tell us more about the Disability Support and NDIS Services? We have over 40 years of experience providing care within the Hastings. People may not necessarily recognise Garden Village as a Disability Service provider, but it made sense to provide services and supports to NDIS participants given our experience and presence in the local community. It is also important to remember that people who already have an NDIS Plan in place and turn 65 can continue to access NDIS services.

We also offer Disability Support to people over the age of 18 in the Port Macquarie Hastings region. Again, we are not known for providing services to younger people and we look forward to providing this additional support to the community.

What Home Packages do you offer for older Australians? More people are choosing to live in their own homes as they age. People frequently leave it too late to consider Home Care arrangements so we suggest exploring Home Care possibilities

early. People who are 65+ can check their eligibility for in-home support through the My Aged Care assessment process or contact Garden Village Home Care for assistance navigating this process.

At Garden Village we continually adapt and innovate and have formed strong relationships with state and federal members to ensure ongoing advocacy for the sector.

What opportunities are there for young people to work and be part of Garden Village? A key challenge for our sector is workforce. Garden Village was an early adopter of a traineeship program. Our nurse educators and our RTO partner Wesley Vocational Institute have all done an amazing job.

Garden Village also supports an ongoing Scholarship Award to students at Hastings Secondary College. We are proud to celebrate student achievements but particularly support students that have an interest in the Health Sector. Recently the Hazel Kirkbride Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Anthony Hooper.

It is great to connect with local students and support ongoing learning opportunities.

What’s happening at Garden Village in 2023 and beyond? A transformation is taking place. The Royal Commission into Aged Care recommendations coupled with COVID has pushed the sector changes. New reforms will be taking place across the Residential Aged Care and Home Care sectors in 2023/24.

Guided by the Board of Directors and a strong management team Garden Village is wellpositioned to support the changes to ensure access to quality care for all. The reforms are welcomed by Garden Village as positive steps to ensure ongoing excellence in service delivery.

DREW L I N D S AY LOCAL AUTHOR Drew Lindsay is a local author who has just released his 40th novel. Mystery at Limeburners Creek is based in Port Macquarie and, like most of Drew’s stories, is based around his central character Ben Hood who is a detective and investigator; just like Drew was for the majority of his career.

i Drew. You moved to Port Macquarie from Sydney in recent years, what made you choose PMQ?

My mother was born and grew up in Port Macquarie and my parents brought me here for Christmas holidays from the time I was born. My mother’s family lived at Grantham, the old house on the hill behind the TAFE college. Port was just a part of my DNA. I have lots of cousins living here and although the place has changed from when I was a child, it still feels like my home.

When did you first discover the joy of writing and that you had a knack for it?

I have a bit of a wild imagination and loved making up stories from the time I was a teenager. I wrote some short stories for fun but stopped when I joined the workforce and took it up again when I retired. I am a fairly fast touch typist and my fingers type almost as quickly as my mind works, which makes writing easier.

You have released an impressive 40 books in just over 10 years, many ending up on best seller lists. Is it difficult to continuously come up with new storylines?

I’ve been blessed with a very active imagination, probably thanks to my grandmother, Ivy Walsh. She taught me to read before I went to school. The more books I write, however, the more difficult it is to come up with something fresh and different. It’s not impossible, just more difficult.

Where do you draw a lot of your inspiration from? Do you draw on your own real life experiences at all?

I draw a lot of inspiration from my experience as a Police Detective as well as a Private Investigator. I’ve travelled a lot throughout Australia and the world and have met many people. Every person is interesting to me. Each has their own experiences of life and I try to absorb bits of their personality and life into my own memory bank. My stories are heavily based on the characters who appear. Realistic characters give life to my stories.

My main character in each story, Ben Hood, has a Police Detective background. Pieces of Ben’s personality and life experience are parallel to some degree to my own.

What is your writing process usually like?

Lots of initial research. Fiction books must

have a firm factual feel, unless they are science fiction, pure fantasy or a blend of both. I only write in the afternoons and try to be approachable in my writing room rather than lock myself away. I try to write for at least 4 hours and then stop. I try to write every day, including weekends. I have my writing room and am surrounded with all kinds of inspirational junk. I can rarely write when on holidays or in a different physical environment.

Your most recent book Mystery At Limeburners Creek is based in Port Macquarie, can you give us a little hint to the storyline?

Actually this is the second book I based in Port Macquarie, the first one was released in 2013 and is called “Treasure”. It is available in paperback as well as an eBook.

Mystery at Limeburners Creek involves a Tiger Moth biplane which took off from a private airstrip near Lake Innes just after WWII, carrying an extremely valuable and even more dangerous cargo, enroute to a remote property in Queensland. It never reached its destination. An old woman living near the banks of Limeburners Creek, heard what appeared to be a plane in trouble, and a subsequent crash. The Tiger Moth and the

Limeburners Creek was searched repeatedly by divers. The plane wreck was never found.

Fast forward to the present and a young woman named Lexi Knox has inherited her grandfather’s home, jetty and workshop on the banks of Limeburners Creek. It is suspected by some that her grandfather knew something about this missing plane, and something. There are those who would stop at nothing, including murder, to discover what happened to that old plane and it’s cargo.

In fear for her safety, and that of her mother, Lexi Knox hires Ben Hood to assist them.

Ben reluctantly comes out of retirement as a highly regarded VIP Protection Operative, to assist these women who are threatened with physical harm. Ben’s involvement leads him into the mystery of the missing pilot and plane and ultimately puts his own life on the line.

FROM THE STUNNED MULLET

H

eading towards the last couple of weeks of the holiday season I happened upon a rare window of opportunity for some downtime.

Now within the rather rigid parameters that dictate one’s life in general, when one happens to work within the hospitality industry in a popular coastal tourist destination, this is an extremely rare gift over this particular part of the year.

What to do with this wonderous respite became the question du jour and there ensued a rather frenzied ‘to and froing’ of weighing up various availabilities in multiple destinations up the coast, whilst very seriously contemplating the concept of just having a staycation, right here in this very locale of 2444.

Now for any of you that may glance at this column on a regular basis, you might have recalled that last month’s offering was about something like living here ‘as if’ you were on holiday. Surely the very essence of the philosophy behind having a staycation right?

After all, I was indeed advocating for all the many and varied things we as long-term

STAY OR ‘CATION? residents living in a stunning holiday destination can and will enjoy for ourselves too right?

Isn’t the next logical progression after adding an enjoyment of such leisure activities to our work/ life balance to actually, really experience a true staycation?

Turns out its not that simple.

In fact, from personal experience having a staycation is nigh-impossible.

Because….all the ‘things’ are still there.

Windows need a clean, dog needs a walk, lawn needs mowing, there’s in fact all manner of ‘stuff’ to catch up on. Before you know it, there’s a pile up of distractions to sift through before you get anywhere near the ‘cation’ part, and oh wait work is still there and shouldn’t I just ‘catch up’ on these couple of tasks before I chill out?

Sound familiar? Sounds like just a normal working day to me, yet with more jobs around the house to stress about.

But, check the beaches you say to yourself – there’s nowhere up and down the coast better than Townies right now. And after endlessly scrolling through the scrawny remains

of wildly overpriced and incredible ordinary accommodation options elsewhere you can’t help but conclude how awesome your own house in a holiday town is in comparison to absolutely anywhere else on the coast.

Has anyone else been on this roller coaster of indecision? Or is the answer clear?

For me the staycation lasted a mere 24 hours.

Then we legged it out of town for a short break up the coast. In all honesty, it was absolutely the right choice.

Fact is, ‘out of sight, out of mind’ really rings true here when it comes to having a true break.

A change of scenery is really all it takes to remove that mental load for a little while. And that is often, all that is needed.

A different town, a new beach, some new cafes and restaurants to try, and dare I say it surrounding oneself with some unfamiliar faces for a few days can work wonders.

And the best part of it all is when you do get back home, it is all the more appreciated by your fresh, new, un-jaded eyes!

Just go I say, the jobs will still be there when you return.

BO O SE E K A Boo Seeka is heading to Port Macquarie and playing at Finnians on the 17th February! We had a chat with him ahead of the show. Expect a fun night of letting go, enjoying some good music and good vibes!

H

ey Boo. When would you say you first discovered your love of music?

I started the same as probably a lot of other people, whether it's playing music or just a love of listening to music, and that was through my parents growing up. My Mum and Dad had a very big music collection, so there was always music in the house, music in the car, music everywhere I guess.

Listening to the classics, stuff like the Beatles, Neil Young, Tracy Chapman, Led Zeppelin, Supertramp, a bit of everything. We were always listening to music. I just kind of started from there.

Have you ever done any formal music training or are you self taught?

Mum and Dad bought me a second hand guitar when I was 8. I don’t think they really thought much of it, I think they just bought it because I was always listening to music.

Then I just found myself sitting in front of the speakers, figuring out what I was hearing, you know, getting bounced back to me. It was probably about two and a half years later they asked me if I wanted to do some guitar lessons and I was super keen. But about two lessons in I had frustrated the guitar teacher so much because I knew what I was doing, but I didn't know what I was doing! So when it came to the theory side of things the guy gave up. So I've had two guitar lessons in my life.

When it comes to singing I was in a band prior to Boo Seeka with my high school best mates.

None of us wanted to sing at the time so my mate's father got five straws out and whoever drew the shortest straw learnt how to sing, and that was me. So my singing career comes down to that day where I drew the shortest straw and I’d never had a singing lesson in my life.

Can you tell us a bit about your process when you’re creating a song or album?

I think you'll hear a lot of creative people

probably say the same thing, I don't think there's really a straight up process for any of us. I don't think we do the same thing over and over again. I think it's a time and a place that something comes to you or a certain way you go about writing something. When I wrote the first three singles for Boo Seeka I was coming off the back of the news that the guys from my old band didn't want to do it anymore and for me, I thought life was over. But I thought well, I don't really have anything else in life, I don't want to do anything else in life other than write music and I literally wrote Kingdom Leader, Fool and Deception Bay in probably a week after they told me that. So off the back of that I was writing about me taking over my own career, my own life, my own kingdom, and finally doing what I wanted to do. I went into a studio and recorded them all in two days and stuck them out a week later, and heavens above, Triple J picked them up and started playing it and I was literally on the road a week later and didn't stop touring for three and a

half years until COVID. Where do you draw a lot of your inspiration from?

I really do believe that most songwriters are, it’s a bit of a cliche saying, but we really are like a sponge. You could literally be walking down the street, whether it's a thought in your brain that comes to you or visually something that happens right there in front of you, I think you're always sucking up inspiration. I think for me personally, it always needs to mean I also still something, it needs to haven’t really have meaning for me. And for me, having that literally since I was eighteen and I've been hour on stage, I get to let go of everything and playing four shows a week since then and feel re-energized when I get off stage. eight. My parents worked very long hours so by the time I was seven or eight I'd have food on the table for the family when they got home from work. I was in the kitchen at a very young age just being taught from Mum and Dad to be able to cook and put different flavours together. And obviously when I was touring with my old bands and not having money, my way of showing my appreciation to people that let us crash on their couches was to cook, and most of them would say I just use whatever's in the fridge and in the cupboard. So I was very good at always being able to put something together. Now, again, it's almost like another outlet for me to cook. I'm in the studio every day now writing the next record and can't wait to come home and pour myself a glass of wine and cook. It's relaxing for me and It's another really amazing part of touring too. Most of my off time when I’m not doing interviews or soundchecks or travel time in between is going to different places in the world and finding the best restaurants or the best produce, butchers or seafood markets and buying food and going back and cooking for the crew and the band.

Hi, Mindy here from Marry Me Mindy. I have been a celebrant on the Mid North Coast for 12 magical months. So stoked to share the same vibe with over 100 lovers who have chosen to share their special day with me!

How did this career come about for you?

Having been in the industry for over 15 years it was just a total no brainer, it was the final piece of the puzzle. I was a wedding coordinator, planner, and MC for a multi award winning venue. This is where I found my love for styling and flowers (I mean who doesn’t love flowers).

From there I went on to become a qualified florist, but by far my favourite part of any wedding day was the ceremony.

here did you first meet?

Adam and I first ran into each other at the Seabreeze Tavern at South West Rocks. Adam was in town working and we happened to cross paths.

Tell us about the proposal?

The proposal was a HUGE surprise and very romantic. Adam had organised a local helicopter ride with Affinity Helicopters, followed by wine tasting and lunch at Cassegrains. The weather was terrible so our scenic ride was cut short. Little did I know that he had plans to propose in the chopper.

During lunch, he dropped down on one knee and popped the question.

Where were you married and why did you choose this location?

We were lucky to have our special day at Banks Cafe. It was the perfect location for both our ceremony and the party which followed. The venue has the best outlook over the river but also has a beautiful vibe inside.

here did you first meet? Karl and I met at high school.

We played touch football together at Beechwood and he was on the opposite team. I stepped him silly and scored a try and ran back and roughed his hair up. The rest is history and we have been inseparable ever since.

Tell us about the proposal.

Saturday 7th June in the middle of winter and Karl suggested a walk on our favourite beach.

Late and dark with the only light coming from the moon and some street lights we walked along a very deserted beach. Karl said that he had a video to show me. We stopped and he played the video. He had hand written signs that had key moments from our love story.

The last sign said turn around and so I turned around and there he was on one knee asking me to marry him.

Where were you married?

We got married at the beautiful Mansfield Estate. Karl’s family have been delivering fuel to Mansfield for some years now and Karl would always return back from there telling me how amazing it was. He would tell me that the view is something that you simply cannot explain and you have to go and see

it for yourself. When we both organised to go and check it out, the view and feel of the venue was absolutely breathtaking.

Looking back, is there anything that you would do differently?

Nothing major, just small things like a videographer to capture some moments that

feel like a blur and a food truck/catering.

What advice do you have for couples who are getting married in 2023?

Talk to each other and figure out what is most important to each of you and invest your money into those things. Slow down and take your time, you will never live in this moment again.

What was the favourite part of the day and why?

It sounds so cliche but seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony was a moment that I will never forget. We also loved that it felt like one big family dinner and most of our guests got to stay and share the very special experience with us.

We got married at Rancho Relaxo.

ey Daliyah, Tell us how you came to be at Crestwood Park?

My daughter Gladiah and I moved to Port Macquarie from Sydney in 2014.

It was my dream to find a property like this around Port Macquarie in terms of accessible land features and a place to plant and grow wonderful trees, plants and palms, creating an oasis of beauty and tranquility. I also wanted to include decorative landscaping features, relaxation areas and walking paths.

Tell us about the history of Crestwood Park.

The property was originally owned by Edward Reid in the 1880’s sometime.

The property was originally called “Clovelly”.

Somewhere about the mid 1920’s Allen Reid purchased another property from Percy Battle. The two properties became what is now called “Crestwood”.

“Crestwood” was owned by 3 generations of Reid’s. Later it was owned by Dr. John Hammett and his wife and then Dr. Michele Fulton bought “Crestwood” in 1975.

At the invitation of Dr. John Hammett, the then Prime Minister of Australia Gough Whitlam and his wife Margaret came from Sydney to spend the Easter long weekend in Crestwood.

The pr0perty is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with magnificent hundredyear-old trees, and private access to the Wilson River.

In 2004 the property was sold to Chris and Jean McGeoch, from whom I bought the property in 2014.

It took almost 9 years of total commitment, very hard work and a large investment to bring the property to what it looks like now.

You are quite a gardener. When did you first fall in love with plants and how much does this play a role in your vision of Crestwood Park.

Beautiful nature and plants have always fascinated me. When we first saw Crestwood Park we immediately fell in love with this incredible place.

The property is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with magnificent hundred-year-old trees, and private access to the Wilson River.

I have enjoyed being able to connect with nature while creating Crestwood Park, and hearing so many times from visitors that they are delighted with the beauty and

harmony of the park. They are inspired by the magnificent trees and palms, sculptures and fountains. Seeing delighted and grateful guests gives me great satisfaction.

i Bonnie. Thanks so much for speaking with Focus.

You describe yourself as a photographer who captures love in all it’s glorious forms with a passion for weddings, lovers, elopements and families. Tell us a little about yourself and your work as a photographer?

Hey, thanks for the opportunity to chat with you and your readers. I grew up in the country, and I adored growing up on the farm, surrounded by nature and animals. This was also a time of extreme drought and hardship, and now living on the coast and enjoying a very coastal lifestyle. I love the contrast and beauty in both worlds and I find my work reflects this.

with only portraiture. At this stage most photographers tend to niche down into subcategories such as weddings, newborns etc but I just couldn’t. I found myself as a photographer making such strong connections with my clients and wanting to continue a journey with them to continue to tell their story. Instead of niching down, I chose to work within my style and approach and apply this across the board to all the genres I work in. It’s such a special thing that I am able to photograph a couple's journey from engagement to wedding, to maternity, newborn and numerous family shoots (or all the other non linear life events, no matter what order they happen in). It’s a beautiful thing and it’s never lost on me what a privilege it is to do what I do.

real authentic existence is sometimes hard to come by. A lot of the things we do are dictated by society, social media, our work and the fast pace of living in 2023.

My shoots, no matter what they are, wedding, family, couples etc. are always an invitation to slow down and focus on the gift we have in front of us, to connect with the ones we love.

My work tends to always be highly emotive, light hearted, down to earth and client centric.

And in terms of style, it’s warm, a little moody, ethereal, cinematic and intimate. I work really closely with clients, to tell their story, rather than only ‘taking great photos’.

To be a great photographer these days I think you have to offer much more than just be able to take a photo. Photography is one of the most saturated markets at the moment due to its low entry level, and the fact that it’s

unregulated. The thing is we all carry around a camera in our back pocket these days, so in some way we’re all photographers which is incredible. But in other ways, we all have a hammer in our garages but we don’t call ourselves builders. In this sense I feel the photography world can get a bad wrap as there’s a lot of inexperience out there and a lack of education.

When did you first develop a love of the art form that is photography and what is it you enjoy so much about the craft?

Photography was something that always came pretty naturally to me, I was always artistic and enjoyed all forms of art. It wasn’t until my later years of High School when I took on photography as a subject to support my dream of becoming a fashion designer, where I was introduced to the darkroom, alternate photographic techniques and styles and I was pretty darn hooked.

I went on to study Visual Arts and Education at Southern Cross University, Lismore, majoring in Printmaking and Photography. My work at this time explored conceptual themes and experimented with expired Polaroid films and alternate processes. It was really beautiful aesthetic work, lots of experimentation,

I think you also have to have the ability to read a room. Not all shoots I do are the highly emotive kind, you have to really vibe the experience your clients want to have, and provide this for them. Family sessions are always just about the fun, kids just want to play, they don’t want to be photographed, so it’s easy, we literally just play games, laugh and hang out with mums and dads.

You have already had an extremely busy 2022 capturing weddings throughout the Mid North Coast and beyond. Tell us a little about your unique approach in engaging with your subject matter?

I think it’s really important to remember that photography, especially portraiture, isn’t only about the final photo. The larger part of this equation is the experience. A lot of my time off is family time. After the arrival of my daughter last April, it’s been a whirlwind. It wasn’t a smooth birth and we spent the first few weeks in hospital with her.

I took very little time off after her arrival and I hit the road working with her fairly early. So when I’m not working, it’s definitely a lot of quality family time, heading to our local river, beach or cafe. I know how fast this first year goes, so I’m just soaking all our firsts up.

imon Adel, the Director of Port Yoga, opened his first yoga school in 1986 in Randwick, Sydney. Having studied Functional Anatomy and Physiology at the University of NSW, he taught Yoga as Therapy for 10 years.

Simon’s interests then turned to Meditation.

He went to India and joined a worldwide non profit group founded on Yogic principles, and served as it’s Australian President for 5 years.

Simon then went back to India and ran a meditation retreat in the middle of nowhere, in the desert of Rajasthan for 2 years. There he became a Swami or Monk, adopting

traditional saffron robes and teaching meditation to groups that came from all over the world.

Adventures & Retreats has been born out of you both seeing a need in our busy technological focused society to switch off and take a step back with you both having a desire to support people’s well-being through eco-tourism and the beautiful outdoors of the Mid North Coast. Tell us a little about why you created this brand?

After our Beach to Brother Marathon adventure in 2021, and participating in a number of multi-day hikes, we have enjoyed 80 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

the physical and mental benefits of journeying on our feet and felt inspired to create a new venture.

We have enjoyed hiking to many places over the years. More recently, completing a pack free hike in 2022 in Tasmania. Whilst flying back into Port Macquarie, we spotted the 35km stretch of sandy beaches connecting Port Macquarie to Crescent Head. It was at this moment that inspiration began for Positive Energy.

The name “Positive Energy” was inspired by a special group of ladies who came together to share stories and strength during the difficult days of farewelling a friend’s life. The brand is a celebration of life and living every day with mindfulness.

The simple act of walking has so many benefits both for our physical and mental wellbeing, including connecting back with nature, cultivating mindfulness and sparking your adventurous spirit.

What are some of the packages and specific guided walks available?

We are all about creating positive energy.

Our pack free guided walks allow our hikers to switch off and reset with ease, with all luggage, transfers, meals and activities included. Our hikers take off at Settlement Point Ferry and journey on foot to Crescent Head over 3 days and 2 nights connecting the beautiful Limeburners and Dunghutti National Parks. “Soaking up the views of the ocean along the way, surrounded by nature,

The brand has been created with a clear vision and set of values for a sustainable travel experience and from an ecoconscious perspective. Can you tell us about some of these attributes and why these are important to you both?

Being a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Eco Pass partner allows us to confirm our vision to practice sustainable travel. An important part of our vision is to explore the outdoors whilst conserving and celebrating Australian heritage and culture. We are supported by both the Port Macquarie Hastings and Macleay Valley Coast Councils and have partnered with local specialists to best share the natural history and traditional culture of the land.

What do you hope participants will take away from engaging with Positive Energy: Adventures & Retreats? I also know you have your first retreat for 2023 coming up.

We hope that our hikers leave relaxed, feel empowered whilst having enjoyed some time to reflect on their wellbeing. “We are so passionate and enthusiastic about the outdoors and finding that positive energy all

around, so we hope that we can spread a little bit of that energy to others” says Belinda Johnson.

Having a retreat in each of the seasons allows us to share so much of what this beautiful region has to offer year-round. We are delighted to work with local suppliers to bring our retreat to life.

Our first retreat for 2023 takes place in March and sold out within days of our social media promotion and we have been humbled with compliments, bookings and local support. “It was such a magical moment for us” says Belinda.

Tell us about your plans for the year ahead. I know you have also engaged a number of travel partners, can you talk us through some of your affiliates?

We look forward to sharing a number of retreats in May, August and November this year. Having a retreat in each of the seasons allows us to share so much of what this beautiful region has to offer year-round. We are delighted to work with local suppliers to bring our retreat to life. Your smile is important, your teeth are important too, but what many people fail to realise is that your teeth and your smile are rooted in bone and the integrity of the bone can define your smile.

B

one loss has recently become a topic of concern as patients begin to realise the importance of their bone and the bone density defines their smile. As the New Year begins, we thought it’s time to address the topic of Bone Loss, Tooth Loss, the relationship, prevention and treatment.

Bone Loss occurs for a number of reasons, but the most common cause of bone loss is the result of a missing tooth or several teeth, which have not been replaced or substituted. Natural teeth that are embedded in the jawbone stimulate bone growth through chewing and biting. When missing teeth are left untreated, the bone no longer receives this stimulation, causing the bone to resorb. This bone loss or resorption can create a divot in your gum line, in your smile and a depression in your cheek.

If you loose a number of teeth this can make your smile lopsided or depressed. In addition tooth loss can put pressure on your surrounding teeth and may cause these teeth to break down from the additional workload.

In short, bone loss and tooth loss go hand-inhand and we have outlined some of the important causes and solutions.

What causes bone loss?

Trauma and Tooth Extraction; Tooth loss by extraction or by trauma is the leading cause of bone loss. Natural teeth help stimulate bone growth through various activities, including biting and chewing. If a tooth is knocked out or is removed it can no longer provide the stimulation received from biting or chewing and bone loss will start to occur. Without a replacement 82 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

tooth, bone graft or other dental solution, 25% of bone is lost within the first year and will continue to deteriorate over time.

Gum Disease; Serious gum infections such as gum disease or periodontitis damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone structure that supports your teeth. If mild gum disease is left untreated it may progress into more serious gum diseases, including periodontitis, deteriorating the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place starts to deteriorate.

The progressive loss of bone can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of neighbouring teeth and result in further tooth and bone loss.

Dentures; Loose dentures that are placed on top of the gum line may not necessarily provide any direct stimulation to the underlying jawbone and rely on the current bone structure to be held securely into place. Over time, this lack of stimulation may cause the bone to resorb and deteriorate, making it harder for users to eat and speak properly — this is where the term loose dentures come from. If left untreated, bone loss may become so severe that dentures can no longer be held in place, even with the use of stronger adhesives, and eventually may require a new set of dentures to be made.

Misalignment; Bone loss can occur from misalignment, when teeth are no longer providing direct stimulation as a result of not having an opposing tooth structure to hit against. Other misalignment issues, including TMJ, wisdom teeth erupting, lack of treatment and normal wear-and-tear can also result in the inability to perform natural activities such as chewing and biting. Over time, bone loss can occur due to a lack of contact and direct stimulation.

Preventing Bone Loss The first step is understanding the bone structure of your mouth and jaw and the importance of that bone to your smile and way of life. The second step is brushing and flossing daily, seeing your dentist/hygienist every six months and managing your periodontal or gum health. It is important to take tooth loss seriously and consider the impact on your whole smile and bone because with every tooth lost there is bone resorption and more pressure put on the remaining teeth.

Treating Bone Loss Bone loss can be caused by any number of reasons, but whatever the cause you should consult your dentist to prevent any further bone and tooth loss. In severe cases of bone loss, bone grafting may be required to replace missing bone and support your teeth. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure to repair and rebuild damaged bone. This can be a solution to the ‘tooth loss divot’. In addition, a bone graft can save and support your natural bone structure and prevent further resorption. This treatment can open up the door for other dental treatments, including dental implants, dentures, bridges and other treatments to rehabilitate your smile should your smile start to fade due to bone resorption.

esidents at a popular aged care home in Port Macquarie have come together to contribute to the community with their knitting and crocheting skills.

Regis Port Macquarie residents have initiated numerous projects as part of their Spinning Yarns group. These projects have included knitting for premature babies at John Hunter Hospital, knitting bears for local children in hospital, and producing Christmas decorations for fellow residents and employees at the home, and knitting babies clothing for expecting mothers.

Spinning Yarns members, including Ita, Jeanette, Sally, Alice, Bev, Cheryl and Annette, collaborate twice a week to work on their projects and have a good natter amongst each other whilst they’re at it.

Jennifer Phillips, Regis Port Macquarie General Manager, said the initiative allows the residents to express themselves creatively whilst providing a valuable contribution to the community.

“Providing our seniors with the opportunity to work with diverse art practices for the community has had an extraordinary effect on their mental health and wellbeing.

“The initiative has been a great creative outlet for them and the residents find it extremely rewarding giving back to the local community in Port Macquarie and beyond.”

The residents from Regis Port Macquarie take great pride in their work and they are always looking for new projects to participate in.

Particularly, they enjoy teaching each other new techniques and passing their knowledge

onto others to make a positive difference in the community.

I have had the best January I’ve had in a LONG time this year!

So it got me thinking. What made this January so good?

The answer was simple. Good planning, allowing myself time to step back and enjoy a reward for the hard work I did last year, and remembering that in order to be operating at our best, we need to feel our best.

or me, I embrace any opportunity to refill my figurative cup back “home” in Hobart, surrounded by family and friends and this year was the first year I allowed myself to do that in January! After all, my parents were celebrating their 45th Wedding Anniversary, so for me I just had to make it happen.

I’ve never allowed myself to leave the business in “peak tourist time” before, but you know what - I don’t think anyone even noticed I was gone! I came back fully refreshed and ready to face another year in business, and it was the best thing I could have done!

So what does this year actually look like for me so far? Busy!! There’s interstate buying trips, overseas business planning retreats (yes, overseas business planning retreats!), there’s a new Meg+Me merchandise line to release, more planning, more buying trips and oh, did I mention overseas business planning retreats...?!

When it comes to sourcing and buying, there’s a common question I’m often asked, which is “how do you decide what to actually buy?”

Well, it’s a highly complicated, methodical scientific process. First there’s the research stage, then there’s quite a bit of trial and error, followed by the occasional failed experiment

with it all finally culminating in a decision of, “I think we should try this!” Once I’ve done that, then it’s simply a matter trying to do that all over again each and every time I buy something new! That’s how it feels anyway, but honestly it’s simply a matter of knowing my customers and trusting my instincts.

I’ve always been a believer in starting “small” and adjusting as you grow, and anyone that has followed our journey so far knows that this ethos has worked well for us to date!

When Meg+Me first started, there were just two fashion labels in store, and now 10 years later we work with 20+ local and international fashion brands and that’s just the apparel.

But running a successful fashion, gift, homewares store and espresso bar (OK - Ant runs that, but still) is more than just buying and selling pretty things. There’s the nuts and bolts of actually running the business, the not so glamorous number crunching, the predictions and the planning, the educated guess work it takes to keep the doors opening every day and making sure we are turning up better than we did the day before. And that, my friends, brings me full circle back to my business retreat!

One thing I learned early on in business, is to know and work within your own strengths.

Then importantly, find people to help with what doesn’t come naturally to you and learn from them. Last year I surrounded myself with a fabulous group of supportive entrepreneurial women who have inspired and encouraged me to grow in ways I didn’t think possible.

In the past, I inadvertently underestimated the power of a business mentor, of having someone “on your team and in your corner” showing you how to do and be more. I am so excited to be heading to Bali for a week in March to surround myself with some of these inspiring business women, immersing myself in all things small business and all things “cup filling” which of course includes networking by the pool, daily massages, oh and strategising and meeting with potential new suppliers for fun new product ranges... it’s going to be a hoot.

We are pleased to hear the news that tenders for the works on the Breakwall have been sent out by TNSW. The tenders close as we go to print with the successful company being announced shortly after and work to begin on the Breakwall in May after Ironman has been completed. The repairs may cause some

disruption however the community will benefit long term with a secure piece of infrastructure and an upgraded asset with wider paths, seating, lighting and many more trees and groundcover plants. It will also allow increased access for those with wheelchairs to be able to enjoy a trip along the Breakwall. If you have been there over this summer break, it has been fantastic to see so many people in town and utilising this beautiful area.

he Hastings Business Womens Network begins the 2023 year both refreshed and recharged after a well needed summer break. Exciting things happened in 2022 and many professional and personal bonds were formed between the members and the wider community.

Last year proved to be a great success with all events being booked out to maximum capacity and the Network were fortunate to enlist an array of amazing guest speakers. We had a representative from the Invictus Games share his experience on how to overcome adversity in achieving and a weight lifting champion who spoke about goal setting.

The committee members continue to work hard to ensure that all individuals are supported, welcomed and given an opportunity to grow to their full potential through professional development and networking events.

The Network has a solid foundation of members and they are supported by the long term Tall Poppies ensuring that there is a successful exchange of information and resources to ensure we live up to it’s ethos of women supporting women.

Another core objective is the commitment to the ongoing beneficiaries - Liberty Services, Share the Dignity and Hastings Education Fund. Great results were achieved with 90 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

our non-for-profit organisation giving back through both monetary and other donations to the beneficiaries to ensure their important work continues to grow and support the vulnerable members of the community.

The Network is privileged to participate in the Hastings Education Panels. It was amazing to see students complete their HSC, despite their difficult personal circumstances. To then witness the successful students be awarded grants and scholarships so they can continue to grow and develop into dynamic individuals is truly heart-warming.

Last year was a busy and productive year which culminated with the end of year celebration in which the Network was inundated with handbags to donate to Liberty Services on behalf of Share the Dignity.

The Panel to Success was another highlight for the 2022 year. There was a not a dry eye in the house. We were privileged to have some guest speakers who came along and particularised their moving life stories and how they were able to beat the odds to become successful in their own right. Our members were able to openly discuss strategies and ways in which we can all move forward as a collective to support not only the Network, but individuals in the community who are in need of assistance.

We cannot forget the important role our sponsors play in supporting the Network achieve it’s goals and are grateful for the

support received during the 2022 financial year.

But I hear you say, where to from here! Well, big plans for this year, however we always like to keep everyone in suspense. VAGNER DOS SANTOS O C C U P AT I O N A L T H E R A P Y

Brazilian native Vagner Dos Santos has travelled the world exploring the ways Occupational Therapy can make a difference to communities through research and practice. As Head of Discipline and Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy as part of the School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences at Charles Sturt, he now shares this passion with his students challenging them to explore all the ways they can make their own unique and positive impact.

W

hat started your journey and passion in Occupational Therapy?

I trained as an Occupational Therapist in 2007, and after a few years working in community and hospital settings, I also engaged in research. I pursued social, epidemiological, and clinical research training in several countries, including Brazil, Spain, France, Sweden and the United States. I am passionate about working with communities and with theoretical formulations to advance professional practices, specifically those aimed at promoting greater equality, inclusion and participation.

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Honours Program is offered on Campus at Port Macquarie - can you tell us a little about the course and what makes it unique?

The Course at the Port Macquarie Campus is relatively new (5 years), yet the Occupational Therapy Course at Charles Sturt is wellestablished and accounts for nearly 30 years of experience at the Albury Campus. Charles Sturt graduates enjoy full registration upon completion of their four-year full-time training.

The program not only ensures students have the knowledge but importantly they have practical hands-on skills. The course has an emphasis on regional people and contexts, including a strong commitment to Indigenous knowledge.

Graduates of the Occupational Therapy Program are working in many diverse and interesting roles all over the community.

What kind of careers can graduates go on to enjoy and how can they can make a difference?

Occupational Therapy students will engage with people of all ages. They work in diverse settings, from schools and paediatric clinics to aged care facilities, and will engage with individuals, groups, communities and populations to enhance their health, well-being and participation. OT’s are in high demand in both the public and private sectors, and, for example, they can work in private NDIS providers as well as for public hospitals. We support our students in preparing for their transition to practice by becoming reflective thinkers and life-long learners to enable them to adapt to the challenges and changing landscape.

Hands-on experience through industry placements is a vital component of the Occupational Therapy student experience, as are the industry networks that support these student placements. How important are connections to professional practice and industry?

Connections to professional practice and industry are essential for the course’s success and to give back to the professional healthcare community and the public. Clinical Supervisors have a key role in supporting students in translating university knowledge and skill into relevant practice in a growing and fast-changing industry.

The past three years have been very challenging for both education and allied health sectors, and we are working to increase our ability to respond to the effects of these challenges and contribute

to the community in meaningful ways.

Vagner, now more than ever, Occupational Therapists are in demand - what do you see as the most exciting opportunity for graduates about to head into the community and industry?

We work to prepare and motivate graduates to promote positive social change in their communities. For many of our students, they might be the first in the family to graduate from university, or they might be the first in the health sector, and after graduation, they might be one of the few OTs in a regional town. This in itself reflects a unique achievement and a positive social change. Also, the most rewarding aspect of OT is supporting people living with an illness, disability, or injury or experiencing social exclusion.

Vagner, is there any opportunity for the local professional community to engage with the Course?

Yes, we provide several opportunities for local Occupational Therapists to share their knowledge and experience and contribute to the course. For instance, clinical supervisors are connected through workplace learning activities; we often offer casual work, so people can share their expertise in our laboratories. We are also looking into opportunities to provide professional development sessions soon.

Can you share the passion and purpose behind your vision - where did it all begin?

through my life from which a number of initiatives have evolved. The practice has been an invitation to seek a deeper understanding of life, human nature and how we connect and support each other. Bringing Tender Funerals to our community has been a direct expression of that.

How did you traverse the jump from yogi and small businesswoman to being at the helm of a social enterprise and not for profit charity organisation?

It really felt like a natural evolution and an extension of the work I’d already been doing.

A lot of my yoga community came along for the ride, which has been wonderful. Tender has been something that makes total sense to people, once they hear about the concept and the way we work.

You have been a mentor for many. How important are mentors in your journey and what is the most valuable lesson/s they have taught you?

Having a mentor is a wonderful way to enhance your professional and personal development. I have had three amazing

business mentors in my life, Richard Rowe (Busways), Greg Freeman (Environmental Impact) and Jenny Briscoe-Hough (Tender Funerals Australia). They are all inspiring entrepreneurs and thinkers and very successful in their respective fields.

Each of them has been motivated by a desire to support me and bring out the best in me, without any judgement or self-interest and have given generously of their skills and time for my benefit. They’ve taught me that when your work is an expression of who you are, you can only succeed.

What is your relationship with risk? How critical has it been to you professionally and in your journey as a leader?

I’m not afraid of risk, but I also know the value of having a plan B when things don’t work out. As an entrepreneur you have to take risks to make your visions come to life.

While sound business planning can provide a good framework, you can’t ever be sure of the demand for your product or service until you launch your project, and by that time the investment has been enormous. Interestingly, with Tender it felt like it just wanted to happen all along.

How integral is your team to delivering on your organisational mission?

Tender is a community undertaking - it’s

all of us together that creates this special offering. We are a close knit, collaborate team of staff, volunteers and supporters.

We are all committed to creating cultural change in relation to death and dying, and to supporting our community to create meaningful ceremonies that honour their person, at an affordable cost. We all believe these things are essential, and should be available to all people.

What is the hardest lesson you have learnt in life and business?

Sometimes you have to make hard choices.

While there seem to be an infinite amount of worthwhile things to spend my time and energy on, there is a limit to what I can do and I’ve learnt that the hard way at times.

What advice would you give someone taking a leap of faith into a creating a unique community organisation with impact?

My great passions in life are community, connection and care for this beautiful planet we get to share for a while, so my advice would be to go for it! And to make sure you are surrounded by a great team.

Hi, I’m Peta Pinson.

I’m a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Businesswoman and the Mayor of the Port Macquarie Hastings.

I’m not a career politician and until now, I’d never been a member of a political party. I’m a team player and I love my region and want to see it enjoy its fair share of support from the State Government to ensure our area is not left behind.

I’ve recently joined the NSW Nationals and together, with your support, aim to return the seat of Port Macquarie to a Member and Party whose primary focus is on supporting the Regions.

I have served and represented the Port Macquarie area as Mayor for nearly six years from 2017 and I will continue to serve as mayor if elected until 2024 to ensure stability in leadership and to not force a by-election if elected as your new Member of Parliament.

As a region, we know that health, roads and infrastructure, policing and education are very important aspects of delivery by the State Government. We’re also aware that there are a number of shortfalls in the delivery and resourcing of these key areas that adversely affect our area.

As you know, it will be my job as the New Member for Port Macquarie to ensure I put our Electorate’s issues forward and to plug those critical gaps for the benefit of our region and community.
