Welcome to our first edition of New England FOCUS for 2013. ’d like to start this year by thanking my team for holding the fort during the last month of 2012, while I was away having shoulder surgery (ouch). What an amazing team we have here at New England FOCUS. I am delighted to say that Tracy, Lynda and Tim managed to produce one of our best issues ever. H

ow many tourists visit Armidale over a one year period?

That is an interesting question. In the case of Armidale, I much prefer to talk of the number of 'visitors', as we attract many people to Armidale who are here for reasons other than what may be described as 'tourism'. We attract almost 500,000 visitors per annum, split 51% day and 49% overnight visitors. It is perhaps interesting to note that included in this figure are 10,000 international visitors. The visitor economy is worth some $60 million, with approximately 900,000 visitor nights per annum and so represents a significant sector of the local economy.

Through various marketing initiatives, Council is trying to grow the number of visitors as well as the length of their stay, which will be to the obvious benefit of the community.

Why are we about to experience an influx of visitors?

2013 marks the sesquicentenary of Armidale. Understandably, this is a significant milestone for our city and one which we plan to celebrate with events throughout the year. The University of New England is also celebrating its 75th anniversary.

January through March is always a particularly busy time in Armidale, with events of all kinds taking advantage of our climate.

2013 is going to be no exception, with events in the calendar which will be of interest to locals and visitors of all ages.

There are a few sporting highlights, including the Parramatta Eels training camp commencing January 29, organised through UNE, culminating with the Eels taking on the Newcastle Knights in a pre-season trial match at Bellevue Oval on Saturday 2 February.

Those diehard League fans can also look forward to the Legends of League returning on the Armidale Autumn Festival weekend, March 16. Hopefully we can look forward to a warm, dry evening this time to enjoy watching the greats of the game!

So what for 2013? The task set is so much easier following the successes of 2012. The likes of Neil Finn and Paul Kelly have attracted attention and at the time of writing, over two thirds of the available tickets have been sold.

Why did our retail sector 'miss out' during the 2012 a day on the green?

Everyone has a theory on that, but be clear – some did not! I am more than determined that this year they all benefit. Armidale and the surrounding area has so much to offer; we just need to make sure it is available and on tap.

Plans are underway which will draw people in the main Mall, especially on Sunday morning and that the party atmosphere continues.

Final word for a day on the green 2013 ...

Remember: these visitors are on a holiday, looking to eat, drink and be merry, they will be wanting to buy gifts, and they will be wanting to get under the skin of Armidale. I would ask that the locals do what they do week in and week out, which is to embrace the opportunity to show Armidale at its best and make the visitors feel at home.

This is an opportunity for Armidale to showcase what we have, how we live and to have a few thousand people return home and tell their friends and colleagues about Armidale. What better advertising than that to promote our great city?

i Robert. Tell us your family history and what brought you to Armidale ...

I was born and raised in Sydney by Italian parents.

I have always been interested in having some space to grow things and initially my wife, Sarah, and I moved to the Blue Mountains.

However, we wanted more of a country environment and after much looking around at different areas, decided that Armidale has it all. It is not too big and not too small and has a great climate.

We now have a house and 5 acres in Invergowrie. It is ironic that we moved to Armidale for the quiet life, but have become so involved in different things that it is hard to find the time to develop the acreage to its full potential – but things are moving forward slowly.

When and why did you first become involved in the Armidale Farmers’ Market?

Sarah and I always enjoyed going to the farmers’ markets in and around Sydney.

When we got to Armidale, we missed this and decided that the only way to change the situation was to start one ourselves.

We also recognised that there were limited opportunities for producers, especially small ones, to sell directly to the public in the local area.

Looking back, we are amazed that we pulled it off. At first, it was difficult because you need to have enough stallholders to interest people to visit the market, but you need to have enough people attending the market to attract stallholders.

We have some very loyal stallholders who have been with us since the beginning.

It is exhausting and it takes up a large chunk of time, but it has been rewarding to see it come together and, other than when the alarm clock first goes off at 4.45 am on market morning, we are happy that we did it.

How is the market going these days?

What other markets do we have in Armidale?

The other market in Armidale is the wonderful ‘Markets in the Mall’, which is on the last Sunday of every month.

While some of our stallholders attend both markets, we have a very different focus to our market.

While the ‘Markets in the Mall’ have a wide range of different stalls, our primary focus is on produce and home baked goods.

We also have the ‘car boot sale’ element to our market, to help sustain the market at times when there is not as much produce available.

People who have second hand goods they want to get rid of can have a car boot sale as an alternative to having a garage sale. I often suggest to people that they book a stall, bring down their unwanted stuff, sell what they can, and donate anything left over to a charity such as St. Vincent de Paul or the Salvation Army.

Why would visitors enjoy our markets?

We find that visitors like to experience something that is unique to where they are visiting.

Also, food is a big part of the travelling experience. They can sample some food at the market and then take something home as a memento from the trip. This may be a jar of jam or preserves, olive oil, biscuits etc.

Market dates?

The market is on the first and third Sunday of every month in Curtis Park.

The only exception is the first Sunday in January, when the producers take a well deserved break.

On Australia Day, 26 January 2001 Melbourne music promoters Michael and Anthea Newton of Roundhouse Entertainment decided to try a brand new concert experience – contemporary music in a beautiful winery environment.

As Michael Newton remembers: “At that show, it was all hands on deck and we had our friends helping us out, but from that very first concert we thought, ‘this is such good fun’. The idea of enjoying good food and wine with your friends, while listening to some great music in spectacular environments, just seemed like a great way to spend a day.”

Nearly 12 years, more than two million happy patrons and countless unforgettable concerts later, A Day On The Green will celebrate its milestone 300th show – in the most amazing coincidence – on Australia Day, Saturday 26 January 2013 in a show headlined

by UK singer/songwriter Elvis Costello at Rochford Wines in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.

By the time of the concert at Petersons Winery, Armidale, on Saturday, March 9, the popular event will be at show number 308 – an amazing achievement.

Celebrated singer/songwriters Paul Kelly and Neil Finn will share the stage at this year’s concert, ably supported by Mark Seymour (former frontman of Hunters and Collectors) and Lisa Mitchell.

Mr Newton says one of the keys to the brand’s success has been that unlike other music promoters, the A Day On The Green shows are the company’s only business, enabling it to specialise in all aspects of presenting concerts in its wineries around Australia.

The two artists won’t begin rehearsals until early next year, so at this stage admit they’re not sure themselves how the collaborative concert will be structured.

In another family twist, Mark Seymour, brother of Neil Finn’s Crowded House band mate Nick Seymour, will be the special support artist. Seymour is popular with A Day On The Green crowds all around Australia and is looking forward to visiting Armidale for the first time in many years, while fledgling singer/ songwriter Lisa Mitchell will open all the show on Kelly and Finn’s national tour.

Promoters recommend that for a totally relaxing day, it’s a great idea to leave the car at home and travel by coach to the winery.

ell us about your upbringing in Armidale ...

Armidale is the best place to grow up if you’re artistic and creative (and even if you aren’t that) because it has something to offer each individual. I remember going to art classes at NERAM as a child and performing in the Armidale Eisteddfod in voice, piano and drama throughout my schooling. My family on both sides have local businesses in Armidale in which I’ve worked in over the years, which has supported me throughout my studies and the businesses. I’ve made great friends throughout the musical community in Armidale and have enjoyed performing in the Armidale Drama and Musical Society productions of Titanic – The Musical, Urinetown and Another Night at the Opera.

I was always involved in many musical ensemble groups and school productions at The Armidale School during my schooling, then at university I was in the Earle Page college choir and the Fiori Musicali choir apart at NECOM. We’re lucky and fortunate we have such a high standard of talent in a regional town like Armidale.

How and why did you first get into music?

Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a singer/ entertainer. Mum said I kept all the guests entertained at their wedding. I think listening to my grandmother play the piano and her father play the accordion as a child gave me an appreciation for music.

I loved primary choir and this interest continued into high school, where my music teacher, Deidre Rickards at The Armidale School, discovered that I could sing and got me lessons with Stephen Bennett from Opera Australia.

He then took up a position at the ANU School of Music, and I was then fortunate to take lessons from Inge

So, after school I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts opera house at this stage of our studies. Seven years ago, Anna Moxham followed her sister, Harriet, and left her family property at Binnaway in the Central West to board at NEGS. She gives us some insight into her time at NEGS, as she faces a bright future full of promise ...

nna, why did your parents choose NEGS for Harriet and yourself?

My parents were looking for a small girls’ school in country NSW where the majority of the students were boarders. The fact that we would be able to continue riding was a bonus. NEGS ticked all the boxes.

You certainly threw yourself at challenges, and in that first year alone you were swimming age champion, on the Coonabarabran Horse Expo team, and Independent Girls’ Schools Sporting Association (IGSSA) athletics team. What do you think girls get out of sport?

When I came to NEGS, being involved in swimming was a great way to meet other girls in my first weeks at school. I soon realised that my swimming career was challenged by the cold Armidale weather; however, the netball and athletics seasons provided me with another outlet.

I was in the IGSSA Junior netball team from Years 7 to 9, and I captained the senior team in 2012. We played in the Armidale town competition each Saturday in term 2 and 3 and travelled to Sydney for the IGSSA competition in term 3. This year we won the division 2 schools girls’ premiership in a close match against Queenwood.

As a representative of NEGS at the IGSSA cross country, I made new friends I’ve kept in touch with.

Sport has given me the opportunity to travel, make friendships and work in a team environment. I was very fortunate to have wonderful coaches and support from the school in pursuing my chosen sports.

Your special sporting interest was equestrian. You’ve represented NSW at

Equestrian Australia Interschools and led the NEGS team to victory at the North West Horse Expo at Coonabarabran. What do you regard as your biggest riding achievements?

I have been fortunate to have had some wonderful horses during my time at school.

I took Sparki, an 18 year old Thoroughbred gelding, to school for my first three years. In Year 9 we jumped 1.45 m to win the 6 bar showjumping at the North West Equestrian.

I then inherited Harriet’s horse, Snowgoose (Gus) and took him to 1* eventing level, representing NSW at both the Pony Club and Equestrian Australia Nationals in Werribee, Victoria, in 2011. Most girls at the riding school were scared of him, as he had a bad habit of jumping out of his paddock, terrorising girls who were carrying buckets of feed towards their own horses!

In my final year I have had the most wonderful horse, Trigger, an Australian Stock Horse gelding. I have concentrated on EA eventing throughout NSW, competing in my first Three Day Event at 1* level. I hope to take him to 2* level in the future. It was fitting that my last competition was at NEGS’ first EA ODE on the upgraded course.

As equestrian prefect, it was very satisfying to win both major school equestrian events in 2012, the NSW Interschools at Horsley Park in March and the North West Equestrian Expo at Coonabarabran in June. It was also fitting that the eventing team which won the Salmondae Eventing Trophy at Coonabarabran for the fifth year in a row was named team of the year at the NEGS Sports Awards dinner.

ow did your film get selected to be in the Optus Flix in the Stix program for 2013?

This year’s program is curated by Nash Edgerton, and there is one slot kept open for the event director’s choice, which happens to be the short of my documentary, Decade of Dominance.

I am really stoked it has been selected; it is a great opportunity to take my story and the story of Molokai to people in regional Australia who live away from the coast.

Large waves and paddle boards? Tell us more ...

The water has been a huge part of my life. I started swimming at a very young age to help my asthma, and I joined the Coffs Harbour Nippers when I was five years old. So I have been linked to the ocean and water from a very young age. I grew up paddling in the nippers and learnt to surf, and each one complements the other. Paddling became pretty serious at a young age for me; I started competing at local carnivals and then progressed to state and national level when I got older and into my teens.

When I was in my early 20s, I went to Hawaii and did the Molokai to Oahu paddleboard race with a friend of mine in a team. I had a lot of fun and met some great people, so I decided to go back and then in 2002 I won my first Solo Molokai to Oahu race, and it just snowballed from there. I fell in love with Hawaii and the people there.

I grew up looking up to Dave and Scotty Reeves, who were champion Ironmen from

Coffs Harbour. Both loved to surf and they’re and pursue the opportunity of living my dream not scared of big waves, or training in big of paddling and surfing as a full-time career, waves. I loved hanging out with those older knowing it would mean struggling to get by guys and trying to learn from them and trying financially in the initial stages. I decided to go to keep up with them and be like them. for it, and that decision has paid off.

Who inspires you?

I draw inspiration from many different people and walks of life. From great athletes, to my family and everyday people who are making life work, no matter what is thrown at them. But in the athletic world, I do draw inspiration from athletes like Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, Kelly Slater, and Dave Kalama.

These guys have been at the top of their game for so long and have continued to push the sporting and age barriers.

What dream do you still want to fulfill?

I would really love to get invited to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Event. That’s been a dream for a long time of mine. I have a few projects in mind that I would love to pursue as well, but I can’t tell you too much about them, ha ha.

What are you reading at the moment?

A book called Organic Performance. Adam Kellinson wrote it, and it’s about good, clean food and living a healthy life and some great recipes as well.

HARRIS. Grant Harris first walked through the gates of The Armidale School in 1965 as a young student. He walked out for the last time in an official capacity last month, as the school’s retiring Deputy Headmaster. We speak with him about the years in between.

G

rant, it was a long time ago … but can you remember your first impressions at TAS as a young schoolboy?

I had been a boarder at Christchurch Boys High and when my parents emigrated from New Zealand to Tenterfield in July 1965, they chose TAS as a school similar to where I had been. It was mid winter, I knew noone and quite frankly, didn’t enjoy the first few weeks. However, as is often the case with total immersion as a boarder, the school certainly grew on me.

What are some recollections of school from that time?

The comradeship of boarding and ability to be involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities was important to me. One amusing recollection is that of being ‘punished’ by supervising senior boys by having to sing a verse of God Save the Queen in front of a group of seniors. That certainly scared me, but fortunately also scared the ones who were listening!

I understand you studied science at UNE and initially had different career plans ...

I majored in geology and chemistry with a view to working in Exploration Geology. I had two short stints with this between my degree and Diploma of Education, but went on to complete the diploma and became a teacher.

But your original plan as a teacher was to work at a school in Canberra – so what happened?

You had three sons who have also attended the school. I suppose TAS really has been part of the family?

The all-encompassing nature of working at a place like TAS can make it difficult during term time balancing family commitments, especially during the years I was a housemaster. Kim bore the brunt of raising our three young boys during term time, but I tried to make that up during holidays. Without that support, I could not have been so widely involved.

There were times when I considered moving to another school, but one of the many things that kept me on was the value my sons were getting from TAS. They are all proud Old Boys.

Finally, what are your plans for the future?

I bought a small farm near Dumaresq Dam six years ago and last year took time off to build my own house. Both are works-in-progress that will keep me occupied initially. I will continue to raise Angus weaners, and we will engage in some travel.

also huge benefits to coming from a nonstrategic state of mind. You ask different questions, like: What am I drawn to? What feels exciting? Where does my energy want to go? What is needed here? What is wanted here?

What would be fun?

One could argue that these are still strategic questions, but the difference to me is that they focus on the process, not the outcome. A second difference is that the answers will change based on the moment. They are living questions.

Process-questions keep you in touch with why you are in business in the first place. They get at the heart of why you are alive. What do you love? What do you want to create today?

For me, the answers to these questions change from week to week, month to month, and year to year. If I don’t keep asking, I could get stuck in trying to strategically optimise something I don’t really care about anymore. And that’s a waste of life energy.

You could get strategic about this. You could write on your calendar, “Every Friday, ask myself if I’m having fun”. That might be helpful, but I encourage you to internalise these questions so they become a part of how you live every day.

It’s not enough to occasionally check in with your passion. You make dozens of small decisions about how you spend your time every day. I think all these decisions should be informed by awareness of your basic aliveness.

One of our clients runs a business thats price structure is based on what the client can afford. The price the client pays for the service is based on a voluntary donation to the business.

This is highly unusual but innovative and looks at business from a very brave and entirely fresh angle. The wonderful message here is that you can try anything you like. Throwing away the rule book and stepping into the unknown is courageous, and there is nothing to say that such an approach will not work because it has not been tested before.

ow long have you worked at Hunter New England Health, and what is your current role?

I have been working for HNE Health since July 2011, initially with the Hunter Integrated Pain Service in Newcastle researching the experiences of people in pain in our region and now with the NBN Telehealth to the Home project in Armidale.

My clinical background is in chronic pain, having been a specialised counsellor for people in pain in my own practice for over a decade until a few years ago. I am interested in chronic disease, and often pain is a part of that. My role in the project is to engage the Armidale community in the unique opportunity that exists right now to experience the use of the NBN to drive technologies that help people monitor their own health.

At the same time, my team of nurses have an ongoing conversation with our clients about their life goals and how they are managing their health to enable them to achieve their goals, such as overseas travel and the like.

How does our recent connection to NBN benefit our Armidale people living with chronic health conditions?

Our Local Health District has received funding from the Commonwealth Government to trial different ways of delivering health care using the NBN and the internet. The NBN means that our clients can receive education, support and coaching to manage their condition at home using the improved speed and reliability of the NBN. A Telehealth visit means that our clients

Our registered nurses, Karen and Janey, are learning about a new model of working with the whole person rather than dealing with a specific condition in isolation. It is a new way of thinking about health and is really about creating healing partnerships with the person rather than making judgements about what they should do.

This approach embodies our HNE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment, and our nurses are enjoying this approach. They are undertaking coaching training as part of this project. We are also lucky to have in our team Rachael, a Clinical Nurse Specialist, who brings a wealth of experience to our team to ensure that our clinical procedures are of the highest standards.

I will miss having regular day to day contact with all of the wonderful locals. I have built some quality relationships with both my staff and locals. In fact, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to my business.

What's next for you, Jenny?

My husband and I have a farm. I am looking forward to giving it some TLC. It is time to give the property a woman's touch.

What do you like about Guyra so far?

It's beautiful countryside. And the scenery is delightful. Guyra is a very convenient location for me, because it's not too far from the coast, where I like to visit on my days off.

So far the locals have been very friendly, and I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of my customers on a personal level.

Tony, where have you relocated from?

I was born and raised in Sydney but I have relocated from Hervey Bay, where I have lived for the past year. Both my parents and my business partners live in Sydney.

I have been a registered pharmacist for almost five years now, and I have managed some big chemists in Sydney. I got my degree at The University of Sydney, graduating with first class

whine of the starter, the bark of the exhaust, a puff of blue smoke and a low rumble transmits through the airframe, as the engine stirs to life. Don't be nervous; you are securely strapped into a parachute and 4 point seatbelt, a short taxi to the runway ensures the 38 litres of oil is warmed up, and all pre take-off checks complete. Line up on the runway, slide the canopy closed and slowly open the throttle, and the big radial engine roars as 600 horsepower comes to life.

Faster and faster, the grass turns into a green blur, control stick slightly forward to raise the tail off the ground and then ... smoothness. We are airborne! Higher and higher we climb. As the houses, cars and city bustle gets smaller, we are taken back in time ... a time when our grandfathers and great uncles were just 18 years old and getting their wings in aviator cadet school. Like our great veteran aviators of the past, your first flight in our North American T-6 Harvard will never be forgotten.

I am Justin Phillipson and Fleet Helicopters has brought me and my experience flying and instructing in Warbirds all the way from the United States. I am excited to start our new adventurous Warbird flights with Fleet Helicopters T-6 and Boeing Stearman.

for WW2 pilots and two of the most significant aircraft in military history. In the Boeing Stearman, WW2 trainees learned their basic flying kills before progressing to the T-6, where they learned the aerobatics, formation and instrument flying.

In either the T-6 or the Stearman after a short circle around the city of Armidale, NSW, we climb to altitude and then you get to experience loops, rolls and an assortment of mild aerobatics with one of our experienced instructor pilots.

Although a day on the green only goes for one day, history shows that most of the visitors like to check out the town before they head home; therefore, we can see our retail sector doing really well. We have some beautiful shops in Armidale, not to mention all of the fantastic food and coffee outlets.

What does it take to set up such a huge event? The a day on the green roadies arrive

in town around 5 days before the show. They have to set up the stage, erect large marquees and create enough space, food stores and toilets to cater for 7,000 hungry and thirsty mouths. It is amazing to watch the well oiled a day on the green team turn our wine estate into a world class concert venue.

Do your staff get involved with a day on the green? Absolutely. It’s all hands on deck during the concert; we even call our casuals in. Our team did a fantastic job last year, and we have no doubt that we will triumph again during our second year as concert hosts.

Did you get to see the concert yourself?

The owner Judy didn’t. She was too busy feeding the hard working crew. She fed the roadies, the entertainers and the security team; in fact, she prepared about 170 meals that weekend. Hosting the inaugural Armidale

ver the last 2 years, Gym Ridz Personal Training has raised over $20,000 for various charities; this time it was the Sandon County Apex club of Armidale that has received the benefit of the efforts from the team there.

The local Pushups for Charity event in Armidale was held on Saturday 15 December, and it looks as though once all the pledges come in, Gym Ridz Personal Training will have raised a little over $2,500 for the club. Not bad for 90 seconds’ work.

What an amazing year we have had here at Eastview Estate! Firstly, we established the New England’s first brewery at our winery restaurant here in Kentucky; then, to top off a perfect year, we were awarded our master distillers license, establishing the region’s first ever distillery. Our signature rose vodka, called ‘Oh Settle Petal’, has already received acclaim. his is a true Eau de Vie, made from David Austin rose petals grown exclusively for us by Kentucky Roses. It is a remarkably fragrant and refreshing vodka reminiscent of rose water and Turkish delight. Stephen Dobson, our master distiller, has created a truly theatrical surprise, in developing a vodka which not only tastes great, but has its own dramatic trick. When one pours Indian tonic water onto the vodka, it magically changes from gold to a dusky pink, which looks beautiful in the glass.

Other spirits that are available are orange blossom vodka, and aromatic bitters, which contains over thirty botanicals. Soon to be released are our dry gin, single malt whiskey, Kentucky sour mash corn whiskey, brandy, orange/coriander liqueur and a maple syrup and Italian espresso liqueur.

By January’s end, we will have a new cocktail friendly menu, featuring a mix of bar classics, tapas, sliders, and our ever popular steaks. Our mixologist and distiller, Stephen, is writing a new coffee table book of exciting cocktails for the inebriated fashionistas.

As always, our speakeasy bar has at least 9 different beers on tap at any time, featuring the best international and historic styles of ale by the pint.

Our menu captures and complements our growing array of wines, beer and spirits, giving

life to original flavours – such as our home made ice creams, which are made using our own liqueurs, or our sauces, which are based upon age old herbal bitters.

It is our hope that in constantly developing and experimenting, that we can create a unique and immersive experience that goes way beyond the usual and is totally different to anything else in the New England region.

The Eastview Estate experience is, as it says in our ads, “Not for Everyone”. It is idiosyncratic, eclectic, relaxed and lots of fun.

Our new still is quite unique, whilst based on a traditional design. We had it built so it is completely modular and capable of being reconfigured to the type of spirit being produced. There are only a handful of these amazing stills in the world, and the New England is the home of the first in Australia.

Beautiful to look at and capable of incredibly pure product, it is the perfect addition to our already impressive array of equipment.

As the editor of The Modern Distiller magazine, Stephen had reviewed and has access to some of the world’s best distilling equipment, so when the time came to buy our own still, we were well equipped to pick the best internationally available still.

Zana Clarke - The Armidale Waldorf School In 2013, well known musician and instrumental music teacher Zana Clarke will be leaving her music studio and taking up a new career in Steiner teaching at The Armidale Waldorf School.

Zana has been involved in many areas of music in Armidale over the last few decades, performing on both violin and a variety of recorders, teaching recorder and violin, running ensembles, and organising workshops, master-classes and festivals, along with time spent as a classroom music teacher.

Zana has recorded 8 music CDs, taught at courses throughout Australasia, Europe and the UK, and her approach to instrumental teaching has been the subject of articles in both national and international music magazines.

And so what now draws this talented musician to classroom primary school teaching? Says Zana: “As an instrumental teacher, one only ever has tiny glimpses into the daily life of a class, and it has led me to want to be a part of everything a class does, not just catching the snippets.”

In Zana’s new position as the Year 1 teacher at The Armidale Waldorf School, she is making a commitment to taking the class right through the primary years. In Steiner Schools this is a special

journey that the teacher takes, allowing a strong bond to develop and giving the teacher a deep knowledge and understanding of the students in her care.

On the subject of how big a change this will be from the daily life of an instrumental teacher, Zana says: “I had a Steiner education myself, so it is a very familiar world to me and I also homeschooled my own two children in their early years using these concepts. And the daily activity will still be teaching, which is a skill I learnt in the field of music and have been practising for a long time now.”

Being a Steiner teacher draws on a diverse range of skills and life experiences, and lessons are delivered using creative elements as a means of fully engaging the imagination of pupils in the learning process, whether it be the forming of letters, first steps with numbers, study of great lives or mapping of the night sky.

Zana recently completed a 2 year Foundation Course in Steiner Education, developing this breadth in presentation:

“Ever since my own time as a Steiner school student, I have drawn, painted pictures and written poems, and the Foundation Course provided a wonderful opportunity to go more deeply into all of these artistic mediums and to see how they can be focused on the task of teaching what could otherwise be a very dry subject matter.

“When one looks at the inner life of a primary school child, it can feel that to teach artistically is almost one’s moral responsibility and that even something like learning numbers is sold short if it is not approached in this way.”

Zana began her association with the Armidale Waldorf School some years ago, teaching the Class 3 and 4 String Programme, along with private violin students from the school: “As time went by, this became the place I really wanted to work – it is a beautiful and ecologically inspiring environment, with a vibrant atmosphere.

Tell us about your family ... My parents live at Dangarsleigh and have been a great inspiration and support to me and my business venture. I have a partner and 3 children (Trish, Lily, Anneka and Keegan.) All of our children attend St Mary's School.

When and why did you relocate to Armidale? I moved from Sydney to Armidale in early 2012 to get out of the city; the environment was not helping me to move forward, and I felt my life was a little stagnant. I made the decision to move to Armidale and start a landscaping business and to be closer to my parents, who have been a wonderful support through the tougher times.

Did you have assistance in starting your new business?

After moving to Armidale, I was linked with Joblink Plus and they began working with me to address some barriers that were present at this time.

Through community involvement in the Armidale Agriculture Show Committee, I got a bit of internal motivation to finally start to see that this business was possible and began to take steps towards making it happen.

I have undertaken and completed the NEIS Business course in Armidale (at the BEC), which I found most helpful.

The feedback received from the BEC was great.

Give us a description of your business ... The business will offer a complete service, starting with client consultation to determine their current and future needs, option of partial or complete garden/landscape design including plants, vegetable/herb gardens, water features, fish ponds, waterfalls, lighting, retaining walls, lawn, borders/edges, and/ or pergolas/structures.

I will also provide advice/suggestions for self-installation/ planting with the option of implementing the design for them, including the design and installation of wheelchair accessible gardens and sensory gardens for people with disabilities and for educational facilities.

Another feature of the business would be the supply of high quality plants and bonsai suitable to the climate, combined with follow up service in the form of either advice on how to maintain their garden and plants themselves, or the option of a personalised maintenance service.

Final word ... I am a proud member of Locals 4 Locals and a committee member of Armidale Show (Horticulture/Flowers section).

Adrian Cuttle has lived in Armidale for over 20 years, with another 4 years spent working in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Beginning his apprenticeship in the Armidale area, Adrian spent the first two years working on new houses and maintenance plumbing, before taking a position as a commercial plumber in Brisbane.

Between 1870 and 1920, wines from the area won many awards at wine shows in Sydney, Amsterdam, London, San Francisco, Chicago and France. A prominent English wine judge of the time wrote of the Bukkulla wines: "[They] have a character and quality above the average of most wine-producing countries. The lowest quality is better than a large proportion of the ordinary wines of Europe, while the best would not suffer in comparison to the finest known growths".

The New England area is unlike any other grape growing region in Australia. This is due to the region's diversity from high altitude (with a good number of vineyards above 1,000 m), cool climate vineyards along the spine of the Great Dividing Range to the lower and warmer sites on the western edges of the New England Tablelands.

London. We were working very closely together throughout the whole year and became pretty close friends.

Later in the year we became closer friends and things grew from there. We returned to Australia together, and soon after settled in Sydney for study and work.

Tell us about the proposal?

The proposal happened in Sydney, 8 years later. We had dinner at Aria and then went for a walk down to the end of the Opera House. It was one of our last weekends in Sydney before moving to Adelaide.

Sydney holds a special place for us, and it was nice to add another fond memory of the city. I was quite nervous, so I waited until nobody was around before popping the question. Once the deed was done,

Describe the big day at Saumarez Homestead … … perfect people, food, music, weather and location. The day could not have turned out any better. Saumarez was a beautiful place for the wedding, with its historic homestead, views, trees and gardens.

Armidale is where I grew up, and Kate and I had a lot of time there in the early years of our relationship.

We wanted to be married there and show our many guests from out of town how beautiful Armidale and the New England region is.

Armidale certainly put on an excellent weekend for us – an amazing setting for our warm, summer wedding.

Where to from here?

Back to Adelaide to get on with everything else. We moved to Adelaide recently for work and are enjoying it immensely. We plan to buy a house down here this year and at least stay for a few more years. After that … who knows. We have desires to travel again, and perhaps move overseas for work either to South Africa (Kate’s homeland) or New York, a city we both love.

We’ll have to wait and see what opportunities spring up. Obviously, there’ll be regular trips back to Armidale too!

Saumarez Annual Australia Day Open Day is on Saturday 26 January 2013 from 10am to 4pm, with free entry to the grounds at Saumarez on Australia Day. Special Guided House Tours are held on Australia Day for a gold coin donation.

We will have plenty for people to buy on our cakes, craft, white elephant, garden stalls and in our National Trust shop.

We will also have our annual Australia Day Hamper raffle with lamingtons, ANZAC biscuits, Australian wine and heaps of other ‘Australian’ icons and food favourites. (Drawn at 4pm on Australia Day).

New England Spinners & Weavers will be running demonstrations during the day. Plenty to eat and drink: we will have our Saumarez Café open, a BBQ sausage sizzle and cold drinks stall as well. Club meetings are held on Thursdays at the Servies Club from 12.30pm ‘til 1.30pm.

Armidale Central Rotary Club has a proud record of support, participation and achievement in the local community. s 2012 draws to an end, President Dick McCarthy reflected on some of the achievements during 2012.

“It has been great for our club to support so many local, Australian and international projects during 2012. We have a wonderful team who will be continuing the work next year, further expanding our outreach,” Mr McCarthy said.

During 2012, Armidale Central supported many local organisations. An awning to provide shade at a cost in excess of $10,000 was installed at Autumn Lodge, significant contributions were made to assist NECOM and some outlying schools with New England Sings, and Sandon School’s SHINE project, which is about positive behaviour and learning, was also supported financially. Armidale Central members took part in the annual Cancer Council Relay for Life and made considerable financial contributions to this worthy cause.

Internationally the club continues its work supporting the Tanzanian School of St Jude, which was founded with support from the club by former Armidale resident, Gemma Sisia. Recently Armidale Central completed

a major project with the APS Down School in Brazil. Both of these projects have been life transforming for children in Tanzania and children with Down Syndrome in Londrina, Southern Brazil. The club frequently makes contributions to relief programs in countries facing disasters caused by earthquakes and tsunamis.

Recently the club recognised the work undertaken by people in the local community who in their everyday employment go beyond the extra mile. These Pride of Workmanship Awards were presented to Garry Douglass (postman), Tony Haydon (water meter reader), Nathan Mintern (waiter) and Kyra Moss (New England Medicare local).

This is all in addition to the club’s ongoing support of local young people through participation in the National Youth Science Forums, youth leadership, driver training, and special programs promoting knowledge of agricultural industries including sheep and beef.

Armidale Central Rotary’s major fundraiser is the annual Book Fair, which is held in May each year. This is an important event in the city and

enables the club to generously support such a wide range of worthy causes. A sub-committee from the club collects, collates, classifies and generally organises books throughout the year.

It is a major undertaking, but the results are rewarding, with in excess of $40,000 being raised this year. The club also works with other organisations to jointly raise funds. Recently the club ran a chocolate wheel at the Armidale Hospital Fete and was able to donate $1,200 to the hospital.

The club looks after the northern roundabout.

This roundabout is a beautiful introduction to the city for motorists travelling from the north – a credit to the members who give freely of their time maintaining it.

CONVEYANCING Since 1 October 2012, the First Home Owner Grant Scheme (FHOG) applies only to the purchase or building of new homes. The current scheme (FHOGNH) entitles eligible first home buyers to apply for a grant of $15,000 to purchase or build a new home on or after 1 October 2012. The $15,000 grant, however, is only available until the end of 2013, when it will be reduced to $10,000 from 1 January 2014. The grant is only available for the purchase or building of a new home up to a capped value of $650,000. A purchaser buying or building a new home above the cap rate will not be eligible for the new grant.

In addition to the FHOGNH, first home buyers may be entitled to the First Home Plus scheme, which provides stamp duty exemptions or concessions on transfer duty for people who are buying their first home in NSW. This includes buying vacant land on which you intend to build your first home. The First Home Plus Scheme provides eligible purchasers with exemptions on transfer duty on homes valued up to $500,000 and concessions on duty for homes valued between $500,000 and $600,000. Eligible purchasers buying a vacant block of residential land to build their home on will pay no duty on vacant land valued up to $300,000, and will receive concessions on duty for vacant land valued between $300,000 and $450,000.

With mortgages, an advance made to natural persons for the purpose of buying or building their home, or buying vacant residential land, is not liable to duty. This applies irrespective of the amount of money borrowed and is not capped.

• Ensure that you have sufficient funds to cover the deposit (usually 10% of the purchase price) to exchange contracts or discuss options with your financial institution or mortgage broker if a deposit bond is required.

• Consider seeking advice from your accountant and/or a financial planner as to your capacity to service any mortgage.

• Discuss mortgage options with your preferred financial institution or a mortgage broker. Discuss the content of the loan offer and your mortgage documents with your solicitor or conveyancer to understand the extent of your liability.

• Develop a relationship with our local real estate agents, who will be able to keep you in mind if the type of property you are looking for comes their way.

• Ensure that you make provision in your budget to insure the home that you buy after exchange of contracts.

• Before exchanging contracts, consider the advantage of having an independent building and pest report on the home. This will give you a clear understanding of any improvements you may need to request of the Vendor before proceeding to purchase or that you may need to carry out after you have purchased your first home. In certain cases you may also need to consider obtaining a survey of the land and/ or copy of Building Certificate if improvements have been made to the home by the Vendor, or perhaps an inspection of the local Council file.

• If purchasing a strata unit, a strata report should be considered in addition to other certificates that your solicitor may suggest you obtain.

• Your solicitor will assist you in understanding general matters including local environment issues, zoning, covenants, development consents, restrictions on use, heritage and make necessary searches to check that the named Vendor is entitled to sell the property to you.

Whether you are a seasoned investor or buying your first home, engaging a solicitor to carry out and oversee the conveyancing of your purchase or sale is an important consideration. It is also a good opportunity to review your Will and consider appointment of a Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship. Take advantage of receiving local professional legal advice to assist you in making your decision, keeping you informed and ensuring that your transaction can take place without confusion or unnecessary delay.

‘The ultimate family SUV’.

Well, as this year draws to an end, I sit and ponder as to how spoilt I’ve been, being able to test drive many of the vehicles on offer through our great friends at Toyota. uietly being a big fan of SUVs, I think this vehicle is right up there as being one of my favourites. (For those of you who have been wondering for years what S-U-V stands for, well here it is – Sports Utility Vehicle. Now, go impress your friends!)

The vehicle I tested is the Toyota Kluger. It is recognised as being the ‘Ultimate Family SUV’.

Having a family with two children, I totally agree with the claim.

On taking possession of the Kluger, I was really impressed with the modern new car look. The body line contours were in sync with the efforts Toyota has made in modern times throughout their range.

On entering the vehicle, the main thing that caught my attention was the room; this vehicle had plenty of it. The dash and interior were very nicely finished and appealing. What was great, was the storage areas that were available. Those with families would concur that storage areas are an issue when considering the purchase of a vehicle. The large centre console storage box was

above average size and allowed for the storage of many items that were required regularly to be easily accessed. There were many other storage compartments that blended in with the interior that did not interfere with the overall look and presentation.

As always, I used the Toyota Kluger for business and personal purposes. The Kluger did not disappoint. In comparison to other SUVs, the Kluger is very economical in fuel usage, using on average 11 litres per 100 kilometres. Being powered by a V6 3456cc engine, the Kluger had plenty of power to deal with any situation on the open road. What I did notice was the smoothness of the ride and how comfortable I felt driving on the country roads and in and about Armidale.

The in car media system was typical of new cars from Toyota. The six-speaker audio system made for beautiful acoustics throughout the Kluger. Being supported by MP3, CD Player, Bluetooth and USB capabilities, the Kluger catered for any function or experience required.

Being able to control the media capabilities from buttons on the steering wheel not only

considered practicality, but also safety.

I took the Kluger to my weekly household shop and also added a few Christmas presents. What I did enjoy was that the Toyota Kluger allowed me to open the rear glass panel, without the need to open the whole tail gate – a really good feature not available in many SUVs. The Kluger easily accommodated my shopping, along with my presents, and there was still plenty of spare room.

As usual, my priority in buying a car is safety, and yes, this vehicle had loads of it. Toyota is committed to safety when manufacturing their vehicles – they exceed the world’s current and anticipated safety standard, which is a big tick from me. The Kluger comes fitted with a

reversing camera, which assists in seeing what is behind you. Along with the reinforced body work and 7 standard and curtain air bags, the Kluger supplies an abundance of protection should the need arise.

Overall, the Toyota Kluger impressed me immensely. The overall package catered to just about every need. Toyota markets this vehicle towards families, and I can see why. There is not much they have missed or haven’t thought of.

This is my last road test for the year, so I would like to wish everyone and their families a very happy and safe Christmas and if travelling on the road, ensure you adhere to the basic road safety principles. See you all next year!

Our practice was launched at SLEX Armidale in October 2011.

My partner, Hamish Holley, and I combined his building business with my architecture practice to create architecture @ altitude, coinciding with our tree change from Glebe in Sydney up to the beautiful New England Tablelands.

How have you found your move to Armidale?

The move has been very smooth, both at a professional and personal level. We have found a sense of community and a more balanced lifestyle where we can enjoy our work, as well as taking time to meet new friends, ride our horses and grow our own food.

Our daughter settled easily into Year six at St Johns and is looking forward to starting high school at NEGS in 2013.

What does Hamish bring to the practice?

Hamish began his career as a carpenter and joiner before graduating in Architecture from University of Newcastle in 1997. His aim was to gain hands on experience building prior to eventually downing tools and moving back to the drawing board. After fourteen years as a licensed builder, Hamish is now working fulltime in the practice, bringing his construction

knowledge to all our projects. This enables us to design sound, cost-effective buildings to a wide range of budgets.

What is your background?

After a year of architecture at UNSW in 1980, I transferred to Sydney College of the Arts to complete a BA in Visual Arts majoring in jewellery, silver-smithing and glass, whilst also dabbling in painting, sculpture and photography.

Next, I spent three years cooking for Gay Bilson in her renowned restaurant, Berowra Waters Inn. Then, interrupted by travels overseas, I completed my architecture degree at University of Sydney, graduating in 1996, only sixteen years after starting!

As a result of my 1996 thesis entitled The Eco Kitchen, I initially set up a design-based practice, mostly focused on sustainable kitchen design. These fundamental design principles have remained central to our practice as it has grown, taking on larger residential and smallscale commercial projects ... many of which went straight to my reliable builder!
