PLC ARMIDALE HAS BEEN TEACHING GIRLS SINCE 1887. IN THAT TIME NUMEROUS STAFF HAVE CONTINUED TO INSPIRE THE GIRLS IN EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR LIVES. ANNA CALDWELL IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THESE WELL RESPECTED ROLE MODELS.

ot only is she one of the school’s experienced PDHPE teachers, she is charged with the highly rewarding role of Director of Pastoral Care and is the co-ordinator of the school’s fastest growing co-curricular activity, the Duke of Edinburgh Programme.

FOCUS caught up with Anna running between commitments.

Your role at PLC Armidale has evolved since you, your husband, Will, and daughters, Charlotte and Lucinda, relocated here from Sydney. What does your role entail?

One of the great things about being a teacher is that through your work you are instantly a part of a welcoming and large community. So when we moved to Armidale in 2006, with Will teaching at TAS and Charlotte and Lucinda at preschool, I was keen to teach as well, I knew it would assist us with really settling into our new lives here.

From the moment I drove up the beautiful tree lined driveway of PLC Armidale, I haven’t looked back. I have been truly blessed to have been able to progress from part-time to full-time work and to have been given the opportunity to not only teach PDHPE from our Pre-Kindergarten class all the way through to Year 12, but to also assist with the coordination of sport, organise the school’s outdoor education activities and camps and lead the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award 6 new england focus.

Programme. I also now coordinate the schools’ Exchanges Programme with schools around Australia and overseas.

In 2014 I took on the role of Director of Pastoral Care, which is incredibly rewarding. I not only oversee the Pastoral Care Programme throughout the school, but I also have the opportunity to provide individual care and support as well. My roles are many, but I enjoy being busy and getting to know my students really well.

What inspires you in your role, and how do you manage to juggle an incredibly busy work and family life?

My family inspires and encourages me to be the best of who I am and without their support, juggling my busy work schedule and family life would certainly be more of a challenge. It helps that Will and I are both teachers and are as equally committed to our work lives as we are to our family, so we share a common understanding and support for each other.

The key to juggling it all is that I love what I do and I have a fabulous support network at home and school. I am fortunate to work with an incredible team of staff who inspire me with their passion, knowledge, enthusiasm and genuine care for the students. The girls at PLC also inspire me everyday with their amazing

creativity, talents and thoughtfulness.

Most memorable moment in your career at PLC Armidale?

With being involved in so many aspects of school life, there are many memorable moments. However a standout would be our trip to Tanzania in 2012. Working in conjunction with two incredibly inspiring women, PLC Old Girl Chloe Chick of The Peaks Foundation and Gemma Sisia of The School of St Jude, it was an incredible experience to take a group of 17 amazing PLC girls on a service learning trip to Africa.

As a group they worked together for over a year fundraising to sponsor 10 girls from St Jude’s to climb Mt Meru with us, an opportunity that they would otherwise never have had. The climb was extremely hard, but everyone made it to the summit. Two groups, two different cultures combining to form one united team to empower women around the world.

Watching the reaction and hero’s welcome that the 10 girls from St Jude’s received when they returned to their school at the end of the expedition is something I will never forget. The trip was an amazing experience, life changing in many ways, and an enormous achievement for all involved.

From your experiences, why do girls continue to flourish at PLC Armidale?

At PLC Armidale each girl is recognised as a unique individual who is able to be who they are. We focus on the whole girl, and there is just so much to do and be involved with.

Through our strong support networks we provide opportunities to build positive personal relationships, enjoy engaging educational experiences and participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities.

I love the saying that “it takes a whole village to raise a child”, and I believe we have this at PLC Armidale. There is a great sense of community within the school, which really is one great big family!

We want our girls to be happy, healthy, vibrant, optimistic and connected to others, not just part of the crowd. We want them to be intellectually curious and determined to succeed in all pursuits. We want them to be passionately engaged in activities that interest them, not just keeping them occupied. Our aim is for the girls to be happy and flourishing.

What would be your ultimate Mother’s Day? I would like to have the day at home with Will and our beautiful girls and also my amazing mother, who recently moved to Armidale too.

At Rusden Street Physiotherapy we integrate our patients’ long-term health and wellness goals into their treatment programmes. In addition to our women’s health programmes, we offer Clinical Pilates and Parkinson’s Disease group classes.

R

usden Street Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation (RSP) has highcalibre physiotherapy staff who have a special interest in women’s health. Deborah Hunter has 29 years’ experience as a physiotherapist, including training in Clinical Pilates.

Is women’s health any different to men’s?

Deborah: The female body, because of how it is engineered, has unique needs, particularly as teenagers, pre-and-post pregnancy, and as we age. However, we often only become aware of the special challenges women face after giving birth. The pelvic floor and associated core stabilising muscles are affected during pregnancy, childbirth, and as we grow older. Problems in this area impact on a woman’s ability to function well.

What are the unique challenges that women face throughout their lives?

Deborah: Women are affected by hormonal changes that they experience at key stages of life: puberty, pregnancy and menopause. We work with women of all ages experiencing problems with incontinence, lower back and pelvic pain, sexual pain, vaginal prolapse,

osteoporosis, and those with sporting injuries.

How can physiotherapy help women who have had a baby?

Liz: Women who are having or have had a baby often face challenges such as incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction, lower back pain and difficulty returning to prepregnancy activities. Too many women suffer this in silence.

In many cases, a simple diagnostic process and a series of exercises can put most women back on track.

In pre-and-post pregnancy we work with women to retrain core stabilising muscles to assist with normal bladder and bowel function.

Kushini Jayawardane has a particular interest in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries.

Why is it different for women in sport?

Kushini: Sports load muscles and joints more than our day-to-day activities. Women are more susceptible to injuries during sport when they are facing the hormonal changes through the different phases of their life.

This can affect teenage girls as they grow, and women taking part in sport during and

after pregnancy. After children, older woman who enjoy sporting activities can equally be affected.

So what can they do?

Kushini: At RSP we focus specifically on the demands placed on the female body by their sport and develop specific rehabilitation programmes tailored to their individual needs.

I also work with high-level athletes with continence issues or pelvic floor weakness, helping them achieve their maximum sporting performance.

And the impact of ageing?

Liz: Menopause and ageing have a significant impact on a woman’s health.

The issues are multifactorial, but decreased

strength and flexibility are major contributors.

Women are more prone to osteoporosis, and conditions such as vaginal prolapse are more likely after menopause.

Do I need a referral to see a Women’s Health Physiotherapist?

Liz: You don’t need a referral to see our women’s health physiotherapists, but you may be referred by your GP or gynaecologist.

We work closely with your referring doctor or gynaecologist to achieve the best outcome for you.

Deborah: At RSP we are passionate about providing caring, sensitive, and thorough assessment and management of your individual issues.

SERENDIPITY IS A BEAUTIFUL WORD; IT SPEAKS OF CHANGE, WITH AN ELEMENT OF WHIMSY. SERENDIPITY IS IN CONSTANT PLAY - I SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED THAT THE CIRCUITOUS PATH I HAVE CHOSEN SOMETIMES THROWS CURVE BALLS - AND ONE STRUCK ME HARD RECENTLY.

A

s many would know, we started to distil artisan whiskey, gin and spirits here at Eastview Estate in Kentucky.

And to be honest, they have done very well - as well as anyone could hope. But recently the game just lifted to a whole new level.

You see, we were audacious enough to enter the World Spirit Awards, the largest international awards of their type. With over 1,500 entries, this truly is the Olympics of the spirit world. The gin entries to this competition run into the many hundreds.

I must admit that I had fears for our small gin from regional Australia; I thought we would would be swamped by the competition. To enter, we had to spend our entire year’s marketing budget; it was a gamble ... a big gamble. So it was with great relief, that I was contacted by the judges and told of our silver medal, - holy cow! A little distillery from Kentucky in the New England highlands had just been given the silver medal at the world cup. We also took two bronze medals for the gin and Le Caf liqueur at the Melbourne Show the same week, and were voted Australia’s best gin for a G & T

You would have to live on another planet to not have noticed the recent proliferation of breweries, cider, distilling venues, new bars and pub refurbishments, all of which is good for the amenity of the area. But more importantly, think of how these new businesses are bringing much needed money and employment to the region.

The publicity generated by our awards has already opened doors. We are fielding queries from all around the world. Now to put this in perspective ... a little gin label from Kentucky took silver in the world cup.

In addition to our excellent coffee, we provide a range of smoothies, frappes, frozen yogurt and shakes, as well as delicious freshly made wraps, Turkish sandwiches and salads. Our menu is expanding and will reflect the flavours of the seasons, with a focus on making fast food healthy.

hen and how did Brady's Saddles begin?

Master saddler Bob Thurlow taught my dad the art of saddle making. Dad then made saddles as a hobby, and at the same time taught me the art. I made my first saddle when I was 13. We both worked on the land and made saddles and strapping/leatherwork in our spare time to fill orders that were coming in from locals.

In the early ‘70s, saddle-maker Warren Newcombe left Walcha for Grafton, so we decided to open up a Saddlery in town in October 1974. Orders came in thick and fast and to get our name out there to the wider market, we travelled to rodeos and horse events from Townsville to Adelaide, and many places in between, with our mobile display unit.

What types of saddles do you specialise in?

I specialise primarily in stock and western saddles, but have made a couple of specialised types to suit for dressage. Customers buy stock saddles from us for general stock work through to camp drafting and Polocrosse. I have made western saddles for horse trainers and my bronc saddles for competition bronc 22 new england focus.

My saddles have gone to a number of places around the world. I have a photo of Bernie Smyth competing in one of my saddles in the bronc ride at the world famous Calgary Stampede in Canada. American actress Victoria Tennant was in Australia staring in the Man from Snowy River mini-series and was riding in one of the saddles that I made for Evanna Chesson of Australian Movie Livestock. Victoria was so impressed with the saddle, that she commissioned me to make one for her to take home to the U.S. A few months back I received an email from a lady in the U.S. who was interested in the history of a saddle she had purchased from a second hand store. The armidale and region Aboriginal Cultural Centre The Armidale and Region Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place will be opening three exhibitions on Thursday 28th May, with pieces from a variety of talented artists.

Utopia Batik and Works on Paper is the first of the exhibitions to be opened. Comprising pieces utilising different mediums, this collection was presented to the Tamworth Regional Gallery by multiple batik artists from Utopia, NT to be displayed for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

This collection was formed when curator Gillian McCracken selected three pieces of batik to be included in the Many Voices 13th Tamworth Fibre Textile Biennial. The collection has grown over time and is now known as the Utopia Collection Bequest.

Some of the later works were exhibited in NERAM last year but these three pieces from the original bequest have not been shown in Armidale.

Also being presented is the first of the Indigenous People of the World Series. The Series starts with the crafts of the Aymara and Quechua people of Peru. The crafts on display and for sale have been created using techniques passed down through many generations, keeping the traditions of these cultures alive.

Combined with the individual visions of the artists, the result is a priceless mixture of old and new, which presents a fascinating glimpse into a culture which has thrived over many years.

The Art of Wool is a collaborative exhibition supported by Australian Wool Innovation, the owners of the

internationally known Woolmark.

Works from NERAM’s collections are presented alongside garments from their International Woolmark Prize archive.

These high fashion garments truly extend the potential for wool innovation and showcase the most cutting edge examples of artistry in wool fashion.

Presented alongside the artworks, qualities of drape, texture and artistry are emphasised.

The exhibition ranges from pastoral landscapes through stockyards, shearing, to hand knitting, all flanked by the elegant garments. But it is more than just “sheep and clobber”, since it provides an intriguing series of varied perspectives on an industry that has been fundamental in Australia’s history, which will appeal to all.

The Art of Wool opens with a free gala event on 1 May and will be on display until 2 August. Four other exhibitions are opening at the same time: 52 Suburbs, The Female Nude (another exhibition based on NERAM’s collections) and exhibitions by David Tucker and Raphaela Rosella.

What a way to showcase our region to the many participants that are from areas outside the New England! This year we even had riders from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory following our exposure last year through Channel 7 Sunrise.

It takes an hour for Mark Bullen to marshal and send off all riders, who will make their way out along Rockvale Road then onto Chandler Road for a very pleasant pedal through the Chandler Valley, then for a well earned morning tea at the Chandler Public School. After refuelling, riders enjoy the Oakey and Styx River descents and then tackle the solid corresponding ascents to the Forestry Huts for lunch. ow long have you worked for St Vincent de Paul Society? What is your role?

I have been with the Society since January 2014 as the Executive Officer for the Armidale Diocesan Central Council. The Armidale Diocesan Central Council administers a vast region and covers 14 local government areas in the New England and North West. We have 19 Retail Centres in the region, with over 650 retail volunteers. The retail volunteers work really hard to generate the much needed income that we need to support the community and we have over 250 members in this region who actively give of their time to provide the best care and support possible.

As the Executive Officer, I report directly to the Diocesan President, Rosemary Fisher and to the Armidale Central Council governing body. My role is to drive strategic outcomes and to manage the day-to-day operations. The St Vincent de Paul Society is a large and very well respected organisation that invests significantly in its communities.

Additionally, the facility on Bundarra Rd will have a furniture retail store that is stocked with great quality second hand donated furniture, whitegoods and some collectables. This is something that we have not been able to do in the past, because we did not have a facility big enough to house the donations. Now that we do, we have already had an overwhelming response with donated goods from the local community.

There are some great items available because of the generous support of this community. At this stage, the furniture retail store on Bundarra Road will be open on Thursday and Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm so we encourage people to drop in during these times to pick up a bargain and in turn help the community..

How can the community help out?

Help and support is always welcome. We always need volunteers to give a few hours a week, and we are always happy to receive donations.

Because of the great work of our members and volunteers, and the generous donations from this community, we are able to continue the great work that has been done by so many before us.

Mums & Bubs I am often asked; “When should I first bring my child to the dentist?”

Questions about orthodontic treatment are also common. There is a real sense that the first visit to the dentist by your child should be prenatal.

One of the big challenges in dentistry today is to see the correct development of the teeth and jaws to the full genetic potential of the face allowing teeth to come into position without the need for orthodontics or other intervention.

What happens in the first 5 years of life is paramount as 70% of the face is grown by this age. This can have a great impact on the health of your child, not only in childhood but also in adulthood with implications in regard to sleep and breathing which then has strong association with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), blood pressure and cardiovascular complaints.

The problem is that the development of the top jaw especially is very reliant on the environment for full expression of the underlying genetic code.

So, for it to develop what can we do to see this underlying genetic code fully express itself?

2. Hardening the diet: Raw foods should be introduced into the diet around 7-8 months of age. It is important that food not be cooked and is still hard. Even Children with no teeth can chew this up, there is no need for it to be pureed.

Research is now showing that micro fracturing of the jaws in young children is necessary if full genetic expression of the jaws is to take place.

3. Breathing through the nose 70-80% of the time: This is critical for full facial expression and is often complicated by enlarged adenoids and tonsils which when all other treatments have failed may need to be removed, and the sooner this is done the better for correct facial growth.

Failure to do this can result in sleep disordered breathing which can result in delayed intellectual development.

4. Bi-lateral Mastication: i.e. chewing on both sides of the mouth should be encouraged as it results in symmetrical development of the face.

5. Myofunctional exercises: strengthening exercises of the tongue, mouth and lips, and correction of swallowing patterns. These may be needed because of the softness of our diet and the high prevalence of incorrect tongue and lip posture which then contributes to the development of malocclusion and/or dental crowding.

So when should we be seeing children for an orthodontic assessment?

At 4 years of age the growth patterns of the face are well established. There is a small percentage of children who benefit greatly from orthodontic treatment at this age. For those in need of treatment it is a wonderful service which is usually easily accomplished, due to the rapid growth of the facial complex at this age and before they lose their first teeth.

The following points have been identified as important for maxillary growth.

1. Breast feeding in a fairly vertical position for a minimum of 6 months helps establish correct swallowing patterns and nasal breathing, apart from the great contribution this makes to the immune system and a decrease in allergic responses.

The Hillgrove Museum contains an interesting collection of exhibits, and provides visitors with a unique insight into everyday life in old Hillgrove. The museum is open from 10am - 5pm, Friday - Monday and public holidays.

A pleasant, and informative day’s activity is to commence at Metz Gorge lookout then travel northwards on Chainman’s Gully Road to Bakers Creek Falls. The Metz Gorge lookout has been recently refurbished with new interpretative panels and improved access.

Continue onto the village of Hillgrove for a self guided walking tour of Hillgrove (don’t forget to visit the museum). Drive onto the scenic Long Point Picnic Area - ideal for a picnic lunch. The day can then be capped off with either the shortish Cassinia Walk or the longer Chandler View Circuit. ow long have you lived in the area?

I lived in town for four years after moving from the coast, but have been on a small property just west of Armidale for the past five years.

Describe the type of artwork you specialise in.

I dye and print textiles and do works on paper. The fabric that I dye includes silk de chine, kimono and habotai silk, using plant dyes sourced from our property, the beach and a coastal garden. I cut the fabric to the prescribed dimensions of the tanmono or kimono and use this as the field on which to print from lino, wood or found objects. The dye pot quite often produces unexpected results because of how marks and prints develop, and I often go with these possibilities.

My works on paper are more experimental, since I often cross between two traditional printmaking techniques, relief and intaglio, to select, layer and associate images.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I’ve always appreciated the traditions and aesthetics of textiles, as have other

granddaughters and daughters who were taught crochet, embroidery, knitting and sewing.

Thirteen years ago I was introduced to Shibori, a Japanese technique for dyeing fabric using resist and indigo. I also learnt a number of techniques which use chemical acid dyes, but prefer itajime (board clamping), arashi (pole wrapping) and dyeing with plants. At about the same time I became fascinated with the construction, cut and decoration of the kimono.

My surroundings, which I see as seven acres of dyeing material, provide constant inspiration, yet the coast is still with me, and I print with found objects from the shore and develop linoblocks from drawings made there.

A recent stay in Greece provided the inspiration for images of ancient pottery in my work.

When is your exhibition at Gallery 126, and what can people expect to see?

Our exhibition is from May 8 to June 6, and consists of groupings of large-format textile and paper prints (including digital, monoprint, relief and intaglio), along with a collection of smaller works.

STEPHANIE HUYSMANS STUDY ONLINE WITH TAFE NEW ENGLAND

Stephanie Huysmans, of Spring Hill NSW, lives some 500 kilometres from Tamworth, but has recently completed a Diploma of Training Design and Development via TNE Connects.

Upon completing the Certificate IV Training and Assessment, Stephanie wanted to further the knowledge and skills she had gained and enrolled in the Diploma of Training Design and Development. Considering her full-time position as a Medical Administration Officer at Western NSW Local Health District, Stephanie wanted to participate in a course at times that suited her and that would not clash with her work commitments.

“I enjoyed completing the course online. The learning platform is user friendly and easy to navigate. The information under each module/

unit was very succinct, which allowed me to complete the required assessments,” Stephanie said.

cake STRONG PILLARS ARE NECESSARY TO SUPPORT STRONG STRUCTURES, AS THEY DO IN OUR COMMUNITY. They come in all sizes and kinds: the basic pillars of health, education, local government, law enforcement, transport, communications, including the NBN etc.

Multiple pillars holding up our community are the volunteers - God bless them! Across all sorts of activities our citizens give their help, their time and enthusiasm, and in return feel that their “commitment to contribute” brings rich rewards.

And there are individuals who stand as firm supporters - and if anyone’s appearance embodies a pillar it is Steve McMillan, Chair of the Armidale Sports Council. The Council records the estimated boost to the local economy through sporting events, and the figures are significant: March 2015 $1,161,175; 2015 year to date $5,295,245. Not to be sneezed at! And sport here is played for the love of it, without those pressures distorting it when commerce becomes prime.

Some other interesting local figures to ponder are those from the UNE Law School: UNE is the biggest online LLB provider, with 1,050 students (out of 3,800 EFTSL in Australia), plus our on-campus LLB students, plus post-grad and research students. Altogether, Professor Michael Stuckey, Head of the School of Law, says that we are one of Australia’s largest providers of legal education. Be proud!

With the official opening by the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, the 7,000 acre UNE SMART Farm Innovation Centre is “pretty well unmatched in Australia and in most of the world,” Vice-Chancellor Annabelle Duncan said. It showcases the technology, science and farming practices which are changing the future of Australian agriculture. The opportunities for young people entering the sector now seem unlimited, as NSW Young Farmers councillor Tim Carroll has said, calling for the building of resilient farming operations. “It’s about knowhow - being able to get the funds together and ensuring the investment will create a viable business.”

Sounds the right basis for businesses generally.

Local businesses which look to the future, know their product and their customers and give service and attention to detail deserve to win through. They can contrast with the increasingly disconnected and dislocated “service” that increasingly comes through very big, distant operations where so many different departments and outsourcing often combine to lose basic efficiencies.

There are signs too that some locals are experimenting with different models in running their businesses to suit the conditions and market. I can’t help thinking that’s a good thing that should pay off, particularly if they liaise with the like-minded.

Projections point to Sydney and Melbourne each being home to more than 8 million people by the 2050s. Imagine the logistics of managing the structures of daily life then. Times are changing fast with globalisation and technology, and we too must look to the future and adapt.

We need our pillars to keep the structure of our community distinctive and secure.

Hopefully within the national future our citizens will be living enhanced and productive and fulfilling lives, framed by the beauties and challenges of the natural world so closely surrounding us.

We’re all in this together - it’s about people.

We have the ingredients for optimism and success, and it’s over to us for the energy and drive to use them.

With the gift of four different seasons locally, we all have a favourite and I really think autumn is mine - so I’m enjoying it. But don’t forget your ‘flu jabs - I’ve just had weeks of a really bad dose, so take my word and take care.

We speak with Head of Junior School Mr Ian Lloyd about this dynamic approach to learning and what it means for TAS.

irstly Ian, what is the International Baccalaureate?

Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation offering four highly respected programmes of international education that develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalising world.

TAS Junior School is a candidate school for one of these four programmes, the Primary Years Programme.

Yes - last month our IBPYP coordinator, Mrs Veronica Waters, and I travelled to Macau, China to participate in a five day International Baccalaureate PYP conference, where we worked and connected with more than 1,000 teachers and administrators from around the globe, enhancing our understanding and application of the IB principles.

The resultant input for our programme from the conference will be incredibly valuable, as will be the ongoing ties now developed with many schools, teachers and administrators in the IB community.

It sounds like the school is making a considerable investment of time and resources into its implementation, then.

In its second year, Pathfinders Pumpkin Run has returned from Sydney having fed hundreds of homeless and the disadvantaged with their four tonnes of pumpkins grown on Tilbuster Station in Armidale. The success of this

delivery is made by the partnerships they have developed with other community organisations across New South Wales.

ow has the pumpkin run grown since your first delivery of pumpkins to Sydney last year?

The pumpkin run in 2014 was received so well in Sydney, we decided to plant more pumpkins this summer. The weather was kind to us, so we yielded nearly four tonnes of pumpkins and decided early that we could expand our generosity by also stopping in Tamworth and Newcastle to cook soup and deliver pumpkins to those in need.

Give us an insight into how you deliver four tonnes of pumpkins over three days!

We hold our pumpkin run to coincide with Youth Homelessness Matters week.

Our dedicated staff, young people and volunteers ban together to muster up resources to make it happen. The Friday

before we left Armidale, there were over 50 staff, volunteers and young people picking pumpkins and loading them into a staff member’s gooseneck trailer. The gooseneck, a ute and bus leave Tilbuster Station on Monday morning loaded with the pumpkins, eight staff and eight young people all ready and willing to share the generosity of our pumpkins with the wider community.

Where do the pumpkins get delivered?

In Tamworth, we stopped at our office on Bridge Street and with the assistance of the Tamworth Meals on Wheels service, who prepared and cooked the soup for us, we were able to feed and deliver pumpkins to shelters, refuges and other community services. Our next stop was Newcastle, where cutting up our pumpkins and cooking started early at the Salvation Army Oasis Hunter in Newcastle. Our friends from OzHarvest, Rydon and Allambie Youth Services came to lend a hand to deliver pumpkins to other

Exhausted, but excited knowing we were making a difference, we travelled to Sydney, where OzHarvest (the only food rescue organisation in Australia collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it, direct and free of charge) embraced the 2015 Pumpkin Run and generously offered the use of its commercial kitchen and staff to work with Pathfinders to make and distribute the soup. We took the soup and pumpkins to Newtown Mission, where we fed hundreds of homeless and disadvantaged and with the assistance of OzHarvest, delivered pumpkins to many inner city refuges and community organisations.

What are the benefits gained from sharing your generosity to those less fortunate?

The partnerships developed with other organisations over these three days are extremely valuable, as well as our young people experiencing the opportunity to help others, particularly homeless and vulnerable youth. They recognise that there are others who are less fortunate than themselves, who don’t have access to the benefits that Tilbuster Station provides. For our staff and direct care workers it is great to be part of an innovative and dynamic team who are not afraid to go the extra mile to raise awareness of community issues that impact on so many people. new england focus.

What inspired you to open Paperdolls House?

Walcha is a vibrant, welcoming and enthusiastic town, and we could see there was an opening to start a new business here that would fill a gap and provide a fabulous shopping experience. We are overwhelmed by the support from the Walcha community and thrilled that Paperdolls House is drawing day trippers to Walcha who are coming to experience all that Walcha has to offer - great art, great food and coffee, and great shopping!

Tell us about your products ...

Paperdolls has an extensive range of clothing, ranging in sizes from 8 - 24. St Peters Gardens What is your favourite thing about spring?

Spring is an exceptionally beautiful time in Armidale and the surrounding New England region. The harshness of the frosts has passed, and all the gardens are growing and sprouting with great enthusiasm to bring colour back into our lives.

Some people love spring, as they get to see all the new flowers growing and blooming; some love spring as they watch the deciduous trees regain their bright foliage, while others enjoy the natives with their very varied spring flowers and the natives’ leaves with their great array of leaf size and shape.

No matter why you love spring, the St Peters Garden Weekend is on again over the weekend of Saturday, November 7th and Sunday 8th November. As usual there will be a mixture of garden types and sizes. Winter is coming … and what does that mean?

Amongst the wood fires, the coats and the shorter days, Red wine also comes to mind!

H

ow good is it to come home from work, kick off the shoes in front of the fire and grab a glass of delicious red!

I thought in this edition of FOCUS, I’d give you a few wines to match with some winter warmers.

The 2012 Toppers Mountain Wild Ferment Nebbiolo: this is now officially a gold medal wine, recently winning gold at the Berlin International Wine Trophy. Nebbiolo matches phenominally with mushrooms, so I’d recommend a maybe a slow cooked beef and mushroom stew … wowser, I’m making myself hungry!

Taking you to the north of the region and to Kurrajong Downs, not far from Tenterfield. The 2012 Black Duck Shiraz is well worth a look, and offers a great New England Shiraz. Plenty of body and character, perfect with a roast beef or lamb.

If you’re looking for some seriosuly wicked wine, try one of the reds from a very small producer based in Clunes (Just outside of Lismore), called Jilly Wine Co. Whilst their wine is made outside of the region, the fruit primarily comes from the New England, and damn it’s good! Jilly uses wax tops, cloth labels and some out there winemaking techniques, but a more unique wine you will not find.

April marked the end of the 2015 vintage for all the local wineries. A mixed vintage for the whole of the New England region, with scattered rain throughout the harvest in certain weeks, and summertime temperatures in 44 new england focus.

others. Whilst some yields were low, quality is proving to be good, and the fruit that was harvested could be some of the best in recent times. In the north of the region, around Tenterfield, conditions early in the growing season made for a difficult start to the season.

Limited rain throughout the spring forced growers to irrigate; however, in late November, the rain arrived, and plenty of it over the next month and a half. Throughout the remainder of the region around the towns of Inverell, Glen Innes, Armidale and Tamworth, rain was scattered in this important veraison (the process of ripening in the grape) time. Some experienced plenty of rain ensuring great fruit growth, while others in the centre of the region had a dry spell.

More scattered showers through the picking season mixed in with some warm temperatures made harvest tricky in places, but most vineyards were able to get fruit off the vines in good time, ensuring the fruit quality remained.

Yields throughout the region varied and all hinged on the early spring rain and irrigation.

Plenty of heroes will come from the 2015 Vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc are all looking good, with plenty of Pinot Noir throughout the region also looking promising.

Armidale Town & Country have had the

pleasure of being involved in several community events of late and also organising a few of their own. Most recently Town & Country ran a Christmas Light Competition and the entries were outstanding; we had over 15 entries and four winners receiving vouchers from local businesses for their extreme efforts. We were involved in the Autumn Festival, entering and being part of a float, which was a great day.

Another programme we ran was a Colouring In Competition for Armidale Primary Schools; the amount of entries received surprised us, and the talent was unbelieveable. Donations were made to the P & Cs of both winners of their age divisions, as well as individual prizes for themselves! Mid last year, Town & Country were involved in Armidale’s Relay For Life; prior to this we ran a BBQ in the mall, where we raised $840.45 for the Cancer Council! In Armidale during the 1950s, there were no facilities or support services for people with developmental disabilities or their families, outside of those provided by the medical profession and the hospital social worker.

Prevailing attitudes tended to support the idea that people born with disabilities would be better off in institutions and, therefore, be deprived of a normal lifestyle. Parents who chose to keep their children at home had to provide all the necessary care and meet all the costs.

The Ascent Group’s origin dates back to the 15th June 1955, when several Armidale families, who had children with developmental disabilities, were brought together by Constable Jack Phillips and his wife, Val, to discuss the idea of establishing a school for their children.

This meeting led to a very well attended public meeting in the Armidale Town Hall in July, which established The Armidale and District Handicapped Children’s Centre Committee.

The parents of children with disability movement was the most significant force for development and change in the provision of services.

Innovative and distinguished people, many of whom were parents of children with disability, became involved in research, planning, organising and fundraising. This movement influenced society as the drive for more opportunities resulted in the discovery of better service approaches.

From this time came the recognition that other types of support services were needed, and the organisation developed in response to these needs and continues to do so. This willingness and capability to evolve has been the keystone to the longevity of The Ascent Group.

Over time the original structure changed from a voluntary association to a branch of a statewide organisation and finally an independent company.

A significant era of change began in 1986, when Commonwealth Legislation was enacted, recognising the need for the provision of government funding of services for persons with disability, with the commencement of the Disability Services Act. This change provided an opportunity to seek vastly increased funding for the establishment of eight group homes in the Armidale community by early 1987 and the closure of the Rusden House Hostel.

This move into community living was a very innovative step for the committee to take and was a demonstration of their attitude to provide the most comfortable and secure environment possible for people with a developmental disability.

What are some of the achievements you are most proud of?

Of all the achievements the organisation has recorded over the past 60 years, the most significant has to have been the resilience over time by the various committee members to continually adapt their thinking and actions to direct the organisation along what has been a path of constant change towards providing greater personalisation of support and ensuring social inclusion occurs for the people with disability being supported.

Artists from this programme have taken prizes in the Armidale Show open section two years running. This year several artists took home firsts and highly commended prizes in various categories; these winners included Kylie Norman, Matthew DevenishMeares, Tiffany Doyle, Shirley Buchanen, Matthew McRae, Chris Peasley, Luke Carson, Edward Thomas-Moore, Bevan Ellis, Margaret Watt, Stevie Dell, Nickalee Dennis, and Jonathan Devenish-Meares.

Every week, without fail, you’ll find Ascent participants hard at work at the Men’s Shed.

Darren Hutchins in particular is a talented and enthusiastic wood worker/carpenter, who has

Participants are also supported and encouraged to pursue long standing hobbies and interests. Deb McMahon has been a regular entrant in the Armidale Show for her latch hook work, which she is well-known for after many years of practice and participation in competition. This year at Armidale Show Deb took a first, second and grand champion. Deb is also a keen thespian and participant in the Armidale Saturday Magic Theatre Company, along with many other participants of Ascent.

Last year, Deb was invited to and performed with members of the company at a theatre festival in Norfolk Island.

In the world of music, Jenny Upton is a member of her church choir and attends weekly rehearsal and sings every Sunday at service.

Ascent participants are encouraged and supported to take part in any opportunities available in the community, whether this might be African drumming workshops or Danceability run by the Recreation Access Project at Armidale Council, membership with the New England

Model Train Club, sailing at Malpais Dam with Sailability, doing voluntary work particularly in aged care, horse-riding with Riding for the Disabled, treading the boards with the Saturday Magic Theatre Company, or work experience with various local businesses.

Why is the Ascent Group so valuable to our community?

The Ascent Group is a valuable Armidale community asset that has for sixty years addressed the changing needs of people with disability in the region. The Ascent Group holds great respect for the community investment, that over time has ensured the region has equity in the delivery of support to people with disability.

Not only does the Ascent Group provide the direct daily support to meet the needs of our current clients, but the organisation provides a resource base for community information and referral. The Ascent Group is a member of National Disability Services NDS, the national peak body. Through this membership The Ascent Group is a voice to represent issues affecting people with disability and their families in rural

communities and to influence policy for the New England region.

Plans for the future?

The Ascent Group is shaping itself in preparation for the biggest change that has ever affected disability support in Australia.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme NDIS is currently undergoing trials with launch sites in each state and territory, to develop policy and processes in preparation for national implementation of the scheme planned to be introduced between July 2016 and June 2018.

The introduction of the scheme will mean for the Ascent Group a significant change in how support for people with disability is provided.

In simple terms, Governments, State and Commonwealth, will cease to fund organisations to operate programmes for people with disability. Instead, people with disability will be eligible to receive financial packages, determined by an assessment of their individual needs, and may then choose to either self-manage their support requirements or purchase agreed levels of support from an NDIS Registered provider.

The new scheme will offer people with

disability greater choice and personalisation that will be a flexible, whole-of-life approach to the support needed to pursue their goals and aspirations and participate in daily life.

The Ascent Group is currently working through a strategic transition plan to ensure readiness for the implementation of the NDIS. The Directors and Senior Management are confident the preparations that are being made, which are both cultural and operational, will ensure the organisation is well positioned and prepared to embrace the change.

The future success of The Ascent Group will be determined by the ability to respond to individual need and offer relevant and contemporary service in an emerging competitive market place.

Our programmes are designed to help people who are lonely, isolated or distressed. They may be elderly, suffer from a physical or mental disability, need advocacy, or simply be going through one of life’s tough spots Programmes and events include: The Phone a Friend telephone support service to improve social interaction for isolated individuals.

Events, such as the annual Christmas Day Lunches, and regular special interest catch-ups

to combat loneliness and improve community contract, allowing members to call each other engagement. on all things farming, friendship and family.

Bush Telegraph initiative, a community mobile This is simply a farmers’ social support phone network connecting farmers on all things network - there is no counselling, no training farming, friendship and family. Richard Schmidt, the new proprietor of Armidale Auto Electrics, took over the business from the previous owners in February. Armidale Auto Electrics provides quality and reliable service installation to the local Armidale community and surrounding areas. Richard has over 30 years’ experience in the automotive and auto electrical fields.

The Men’s Shed is an integral part of the Armidale community. It is operated by its volunteer members.

FAMILY DISPUTE RESOLUTION AND PARENTING

W

hen parents separate, it is a distressing time for the parties and all concerned including the children, near relatives and friends. The Australian Government provides funding for ‘Family Relationships Centres’ which can provide assistance to parties by giving information, referring enquiries to other agencies and by helping the parties to decide on what to do next.

You can call the Family Relationship Advice Line on 1800 050 321 between 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturday. The Advice Line uses interpreters if needed. Alternatively, you can access their website on www.familyrelationships.gov.au The Family Law Act 1975 requires separating parents to participate in mediation, prior to filing for proceedings in Court, if the parents are unable to come to any agreement regarding arrangements for the children. A specialised mediator can assist the parties to come to an agreement on issues about parenting arrangements, asset distribution or whatever else might require resolution.

For any arrangement reached in regard to parenting, whether through mediation or Court proceedings, the parties must consider “What is in the child’s best interest”. At the mediation stage, the mediator may consult the parents and carers for them to advise what they think would be in the child’s best interest. This is known as “child focused” mediation.

A recent and popular trend is to obtain the views of the child separately. This is known as “child inclusive” mediation and is usually undertaken by having a child specialist interview the child and provide a report. The child specialist is someone with training in child development and with the appropriate skills to interview children. The specialist can attend the mediation and provide the parties with the feedback which the child agrees to

tell the parents. This is a powerful process which focuses the parties on the needs of the child.

Authors Fisher L and Brandon M in their book Mediating with Families (published

by Thomson Reuters Aust 2012), identified the overwhelming benefits of this process, namely that when parents focus on their child’s best interest, all parties benefit through reduced conflict and better communication.

If the mediation process is unsuccessful and the parties are unable to reach agreement, either party can file for proceedings in Court. To do so, they must provide a Certificate signed by the mediator, stating the parties have genuinely participated in mediation. As stated, the paramount consideration for the Court in making a Parenting Order is the best interests of the child.

In reaching this view, the Court’s primary consideration is: • the benefit to the child of having a meaningful relationship with both of the child’s parents; and, • the need to protect the child from physical or psychological harm from being subjected to, or exposed to, abuse, neglect or family violence.

In determining the “best interest of the child”, the Court must give greater weight to the second factor expressed under (b) above.

To access Legal Aid, a party must satisfy a strict means test and Legal Aid is usually only available to resolve parenting orders. The parties might not need a lawyer to conduct the proceedings, but it may be worthwhile getting legal advice from the outset to be clear about what options are available or to assist a party in preparing their case for mediation or Court proceedings.
