Australian CELTIC FESTIVAL Australian Celtic Festival ... Exciting!

Don’t take our word ... just ask the thousands of spectators, clans, artists and enthusiasts who flock from across Australia and overseas for the annual Australian Celtic Festival in Glen Innes on the first weekend in May, and they’ll tell you it’s different, exciting, full of colour and spectacle.

Different is a key word for each of the hard working committee, supported by the resources of a committed Glen Innes Severn Council, who strive to make each year better than the last.

The Festival is an exciting, family friendly event held at the Australian Standing Stones - the official National Monument to Australia’s Celtic pioneers and recognised by the Celtic Council as the national gathering site for Celtic descendents and clans. It features spectacular displays by re-enactment groups, Celtic dog championships, dancers, top-line singers, musicians and will feature Celia Paevy of The Voice as a feature concert on Saturday night, 2nd May. What is constant, though, is the spine-tingling skirl of the pipes, roll of the drums, the massed bands, Celtic dancers, school concerts, buskers, vibrant CBD featuring a newly refurbished Town Square, boutique market stalls - the joy on the face of children and variety of entertainment.

TAS Cadet Unit he history of the TAS Cadet Unit may date back some 100 years, but the value of quality leadership training and youth development through outdoor education continues to make it relevant in an everchanging world. Because of this, Cadets is an obligatory part of the Activities program at TAS for all boys in Years 7- 9 (and voluntary for those in later years who take on leadership roles in the unit).

Operating as part of the Australian Army Cadets (AAC), the TAS Cadet Unit is proud to be the second oldest in Australia, and boats amongst its former commanding officers the great Australian wartime leader Lt Gen Sir Leslie Morshead, whilst notable former unit members include pioneer aviator Capt Sir Gordon Taylor.

While drill and ceremonial work is undertaken, the emphasis these days is strongly geared towards outdoor activities with inherent leadership opportunities.

The unit is structured with an HQ and three companies, supported by radio platoon and Q Store. Year 7 cadets are posted in C Coy, Year 8 in B Coy and Year 9 in A Coy. All boys gain skills in field activities such as abseiling and navigation, the discipline of parade drill, building teamwork, and communicating effectively. For decades TAS has proudly supplied a catafalque guard at ANZAC services in the district, and the school honours the 103 Old Boys and staff who 6 new england focus.

Some of the activities undertaken by the AAFC include flying (powered and gliding) field craft, adventure training (caving and abseiling) firearms safety training, drill and ceremonial, service knowledge, navigation and survival.

Currently our unit is 25 strong, with limited places still available until the end of April for recruits to join. We have a busy year on our horizon; just this month alone Cadets will be trying their hands at powered flying with the help of New England Flight Training, participating in multiple community remembrance events, and beginning our firearm safety training program ready for our western region shoot next month. Our cadets are working towards the planning of a multi-unit activity toward the end of the year, using the skills they are taught through the AAFC. Our fundamental aim is to foster qualities that will enable cadets to become responsible young adults, who will make a valuable contribution to our communities. No matter what career you choose, the AAFC provides a foundation of knowledge and skills that will assist you towards your future.

McCARTHY THELMA MCCARTHY AT THE AGE OF 17 YEARS JOINED THE WAAAF IN 1942, AS A WIRELESS OPERATOR.W E HAVE THE PLEASURE OF HEARING HER STORY, AS SHE SHARES THE EXCITING TIME SHE HAD IN THE FORCE.

W

hen did you join the RAAF and where did you do your training pre WWII? I joined the Air Force in 1942, as a wireless operator at my own expense and passed the trade test. It was 25 words per minute; when post office staff trained in wireless operators morse code, it took them over 18 months to achieve this. We used to go to a training school - I swear if there are any RAAF wireless operators around, they would remember Miss MacKenzie’s School. She had a small space opposite Wynyard where we used to go and train, then at night we would go to Ford Street Girls High, for silver tuition. We then graduated at 25 words per minute in six weeks.

Then that night after we were sworn in, we went on a train to Melbourne. In that period a lot of big old homes in Toorak in Victoria had been taken over, and a lot of people, like Myers, had surrendered their homes for the war effort. We had six weeks there learning the Air Force Way. The WAAAF were the first group apart from the Army nurses who had been in the services and then shortly after the Army and Navy started to enlist women.

What were your uniforms like?

We moved to Melbourne and we had to get our uniforms. Our dress uniform was blue, the same as the men’s and we had skirts of course.

But our work uniforms they didn’t have, so we had to use the men’s - and I’m so short, I had a big hem. I can remember distinctly one day the newspaper came out to take our photo in our giggle suits, we used to call them, and I remember the quote so well, as it was on the

top of the photo of us: “Solomon in all his glory was never arrayed as one of these”.

Tell me about how you met your husband, Bill?

Bill was in the 13th Squadron. Crews had been formed and they had came to do a short period of exercise before going north; mind you, there were a lot of Japanese boats and submarines down the coast that the radar was showing ...

So the main thing for the air crew was weather, and this also had to be coded, as the Japanese also wanted to know what the weather was like. We had a series of documents whereby if they suspected the daily code had been broken, they could try another. They had to come and sign for these code books before they left; the navigator had to come, and this was Gough Whitlam, and wireless air gunner had to come, and this was Bill McCarthy.

I was so young; I was 17 - I put my age up.

They use to call me babe (and Gough did until the day he died).

Our courtship was writing letters, with occasional leave.

A FLIGHT FROM WAR-TORN BEGIUM IN A CHAFF BAG ... CRAIG DUSSART, GRANDSON OF THE LATE ALBERT DUSSART, REMEMBERS AND SHARES THE STORIES THAT HIS GRANDFATHER SHARED WITH HIM AND HIS FAMILY.

A

NZAC Day holds a special significance for the local family of the late Albert Dussart. They remember Albert telling them stories about a group of Aussie diggers who "adopted" the Belgium boy, smuggled him out of Europe and brought him to Australia, where he lived ever since.

Albert was eight years old when World War I began. Born in the town of Charleroi in southern Belgium on November 18, 1906, Albert was orphaned when his father was killed in a coal mining accident and his mother died in hospital, probably the victim of tuberculosis.

An orphanage became his home until it was ransacked by German soldiers and the children were sent to relatives due to lack of food.

Young Albert, who always admitted to being a rebellious child, was sent to the home of his grandmother. She was a strict woman of strong religious beliefs; Albert soon became fed up with rules and religion and ran away.

He spent the next six months roaming war stricken Belgium, sleeping in haystacks and living off the odd carrot plucked from a field.

The young boy, who wore wooden soled shoes with tin uppers, eventually approached a group of Australian soldiers and asked them for shelter. The diggers were members of the 26th Battalion, and they told Albert they had been on their way to Germany, but the trip had been called off. The end of the war 8

was nearing, and Albert recalled clearly the Germans retreating, blowing up everything in sight, leaving thousands homeless.

Alice Hogbin, the daughter of a Uralla Albert had moved with the diggers to their blacksmith, in 1928. They had three children, Salisbury Plains camp and spent his days a son and two daughters. playing with the English children.

After marrying, they moved to Rocky River district and pitched a tent on a ten acre block, as squatting was common at that time. After living on food relief for a while, Albert went to the city, working on the Sydney Station Master’s staff.

Although the money was good, Albert wanted to be with his family and found a job as the gate keeper in Uralla. Later Albert worked on the Uralla Shire Council as a construction worker, until his retirement in 1971.

Although naturalised during the WWII years, Albert was knocked back for active service due to health reasons. He did, however, return to his birthplace years later. Although he had forgotten his native language, he did his best to try to find his brother and sister, but without success. People living in the house in which his parents had occupied knew nothing of the family, and official records of Albert's birth had been destroyed in the war years. His search was made more difficult by the fact that the name Dussart in Belgium is as common as Smith or Jones is here.

His childhood memories were very clear when he shared them with his family and friends - and why not? It was the adventure of a lifetime for the young boy.

dr john brabant A few years ago, Dr John Brabant was just your average

orthodontist providing surgery and adjustments across the Albury-Wodonga region on the border of New South Wales and Victoria.

T

hat was until an article about homelessness in the local paper prompted Dr Brabant to ask that life-changing question, “Why not?”

Now three years later, Dr Brabant and his 400-strong team have been rewarded for their efforts in being named New South Wales Volunteer Team of 2012.

Hi John. Tell us a bit about yourself ...

I went to Sydney Boys’ High and then graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (Hons) at Sydney University in 1975 and then a Master of Dental Science (orthodontics) in 1982. I have been in the practice of orthodontics for 32 years.

What inspires you?

After reading an article in the local paper entitled: It's Easier to Turn Away than to Care, about the homeless people and those living in poverty in the region, I decided to care and to act. I bought a food van and raised a volunteer workforce. Sometimes a feeling from the heart becomes a jigsaw puzzle that is meant to be and needs to be put together.

Can you tell us how you become involved with the Carevan changing lives?

The Carevan Foundation aims to create a sense of identity, a sense of belonging and a sense of achievement in those less advantaged in our society. The Foundation is focused on changing lives by changing "us" and "them" into "we".

What programmes do you run?

The Foundation concentrates on three main programmes.

The frontline Carevan goes out each night to help those in need, giving nutritional meals. But it is not about the meal; it is about the social awareness of poverty and the social inclusion it creates for those less fortunate.

The Kids Cooking and Caring programme is a Carevan initiative where students in Year 9 in the higher socio economic high schools volunteer to cook one morning a week for a term, and the food goes to the frontline Carevan. At the end of term, those students meet those whom they have been cooking for. This develops a sense of compassion

and giving and achievement in these students.

Over 17% of Australian children are living in poverty.

The Carevan Sun Smiles is a multi-strategy oral health promotion and decay prevention programme. Volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, oral health therapists and students from dental schools teach primary children in g lower socio economic schools.

BEN TELLS US ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES, AND HOW HE CAPTURES STUNNING AERIAL VIDEO AND PHOTOGRAPHY FOR MANY FAMOUS BANDS AND COMPANIES.

i Ben. It's great to meet with you - could you tell us about yourself?

I grew up in Armidale, finished Year 12 at Armidale High in 1999 and moved to Sydney to study. Sixteen years and 9 cities later, I’m finally back home.

What exactly is it that you do?

There are a few arms to the work I do, ranging from digital marketing, video production, animation, and of course ... Aerial Cinematography. This means a fairly wide range of clients, ranging from Salmon farms, bands, car manufacturers and real sstate.

Recently I shot and directed the McClymonts’ music video Forever Begins Tonight at Saumarez Homestead, which was a lot of fun.

How did you get into this field?

The aerial work started as a hobby, really. Flying RC planes for fun and as the technology improved with stabilised camera gimbals and multirotor helicopters, I decided to incorporate aerial footage into the commercials and projects I was working on.

Do you need licence to fly, or can anyone do it?

What plans do you have for the future?

Aerial cinematography is really still in its infancy, in terms of where it’s being used.

Real estate has certainly jumped on board with the technology. Our office in Brisbane is booked most days with a real estate project, and locally we’re starting to work with agencies to showcase properties from a bird’s eye view. Our larger UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) carry cameras capable of Ultra HD footage (4K resolution - for the nerds) which can be used in feature films and national commercials. We’re excited about where this area is heading, as it was always just a hobby that took off ... yes, pun intended. I apologise.

WE CATCH UP WITH DAVID GEE, WHO FINDS SHARING MUSIC MAKING WITH AN ENSEMBLE OF MUSICIANS INCREDIBLY EXCITING AND REWARDING. WE FIND OUT ABOUT THE “LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS IN ARMIDALE”.

avid, how did you become involved with the Armidale Symphony Orchestra?

I have always been interested in conducting and have conducted choirs, orchestras, musicals and operas since my student days. I find sharing music making with an ensemble of musicians incredibly exciting and rewarding.

Since moving to Armidale, I have conducted the orchestra on several occasions and started the tradition of the “Last Night of the Proms in Armidale” performances in 1997. I have not worked with the orchestra for a few years now, so it is great to be able to return and continue the tradition of these popular concerts.

are good fun, with audience participation, singing, streamer throwing, flag waving and whistle blowing encouraged. The programme includes such British favourites as Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, the Hornpipe and Land of Hope and Glory, which is part of the Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 by Elgar. All of these are included in our programme, plus Australian traditional music. Our programme also includes the Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest by Handel, arguably the most popular symphony of all time, the Dvorak Symphony No. 9, From the New World and a particularly suitable piece for our university town, the Academic Festival Overture by Brahms.

The orchestra will be joined by chamber choir, Fiori Musicali, the Armidale Choral Society and invited singers for Zadok the Priest and to lead the singing in the pieces with audience participation. Singers Ruth Strutt and Kylie Constantine will also play important roles in the performance.

This performance marks the return by popular demand of the Last Night of the

Proms to Armidale.

Performances are usually sold out and in front of packed and enthusiastic audiences.

What special features will return?

Obviously audience participation will be a highlight.

Lazenby Hall will be suitably decorated, and we will have a supply of flags and streamers. A special feature of this year’s concert will be the return to the Armidale stage by former Armidale resident and now champion Scottish drummer, James Walsh.

James featured in the very first of these concerts in 1997 with his father Geoff, who is also performing in this event. James, one of Australia’s most renowned drummers, was considered too little in 1997 to have his own drum, so shared his father’s drum. He and outstanding pipers Caitlin McInnes and Nathaniel Agnew will feature in a special guest spot in the programme.

Who is involved in the orchestra?

The Armidale Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra which has been part of the musical life of Armidale for many, many

years. It normally gives three concerts each year in Lazenby Hall and provides the orchestral support for the annual Armidale Music Foundation Choral Workshop held in March.

Members of the orchestra come from all walks of life, including students, music teachers and local musicians. It is one of the many jewels in the crown of Armidale’s musical life and is able to perform at a high standard a wide variety of the standard orchestral repertoire. The orchestra will be joined by several musicians formerly from Armidale, who played with the orchestra as students and who will return to take part in this programme.

When and where will the concert be performed?

The Last Night of the Proms concert takes place at Lazenby Hall on Sunday, May 10 (Mother’s Day) commencing at 3pm. This is a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Bring whistles, streamers, flags and the like to supplement the material which will be available at the concert and relax and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music and fun.

here is Nundle, and how do we get there?

Nundle is located 60 km south east of Tamworth, on the western fall of the Great Dividing Range. At 600 m elevation, it is quite a bit higher than Tamworth. Nundle has a pretty, valley setting and the town formed on the eastern side of the Peel River. The landscape is dramatically beautiful, because within 10 km the hills rise from 600 m to 1200 m elevation at Hanging Rock. This makes for amazing sunsets as the hills turn gold and pink as the sun goes down.

After good rain, the undulating hills around Nundle are reminiscent of Tasmania or New Zealand.

There is also a big difference in climate in a short distance. It snows at Hanging Rock several times a year throughout winter, and Nundle and Hanging Rock are always several degrees cooler than Tamworth in summer.

lison is a Gumbaynggirr woman who has exhibited internationally. As an Aboriginal artist, one of the major themes in her work is the visual representation of Aboriginal culture, history, traditions and stories - a practice known as “story in art”. The tradition of story in art is an important one within Aboriginal culture. Her body of work being brought to Armidale will include twenty pieces of pottery, which include earthenware, raku and ceramic.

Alison has practiced art and taught for many years in the Clarence and Coffs regions and has won several art awards, including the 2013 Coffs City Council NAIDOC community arts and culture award and the 2007 inaugural Clarence Valley Indigenous Art Prize with her painting Black Cowries Old Medicine.

An intrinsically important part of Alison’s artistic journey was made possible through being awarded the NSW Indigenous Art Fellowship in 2008, allowing her to travel to Canada to complete a project of international scope, exhibiting with French Canadian artist and adjudicator Marcel Debreuil and Canadian Aboriginal sculptor Irvin Head. The trio presented The Art of Dreaming, which revealed a delicate primitive thread that binds all living things.

Alison’s pottery will be exhibited alongside Lloyd Hornsby’s paintings. Lloyd is a story teller; his artwork is urbanised contemporary combining traditional Aboriginal dot painting with visions of contemporary Australian life and landscapes. His art is perhaps an expression of Hornsby’s own history, having only a few years ago discovered his grandmother was

The curtain raiser to the Festival is the on-trend Laneway Pop-up Bar. For two big nights, a unique laneway will be transformed and decorated in retro furniture and decor especially curated in collaboration with One of a Kind. Operating on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April, tickets are selling fast.

Despite this discovery he made of his true origins, that of being one of the Yuin tribe based South of Sydney, it is incredible that his work dating back to the 1960s has always displayed a close infinity to the genre of Aboriginal art and Aboriginal culture.

Hornsby’s art has become a great attraction for international and national investors and art lovers.

Former curator of the Contemporary Australian Art at Queensland Art Gallery and leading expert in Australian Aboriginal art, Timothy Morrell is one of these many admirers.

Morrell’s critique of Hornsby’s work clearly encapsulates the very power of his art.

“An all-encompassing overview is fundamental to the way Lloyd Hornsby makes art. Sometimes his vision is not just national, or global, but cosmic. Dots of paint blend with a universe full of stars in rhythmic, hypnotic pictures of ideal coexistence.

“The natural and the supernatural world become indistinguishable, as they always are in traditional over societies. His paintings are intensely optimistic in the way they use modern art as a vehicle for conveying ancient harmonies that the world seems to have lost, but which could potentially be re-established."

This time around, Lloyd will be exhibiting with fellow Aboriginal artists Cecil Coleman and Bruce Hooper. Along with Lloyd’s My Country Outside in Art and Alison’s A Little Bird Told Me works will be a photographic exhibition of local Elder Fay Griffiths. These exhibitions will be on display until 23rd May.

Throughout the Festival, the Farm Gate Trail sees producers open their gates to host visitors and provide an insight into how they farm and market their produce. It is a self-drive tour taking in New England, Peel Valley, and Liverpool Plains.

Blackjacks had a vision of creating a place where every day provided the opportunity to enjoy great local product with friends in an environment that was productive, comforting, yet at the same time stimulating a place to meet and catch up, something that was different. The offerings were to be healthy, appealing to the senses, in some cases a little bit edgy, and fun. We see some of our more mature customers having a quiet giggle at some of the names of the burgers. (We were all young once.)

Coffee We are seriously protective of the quality of our coffee. Our green beans are imported from Brazil, roasted in Sydney in a boutique roaster that services only 30 cafés Australia-wide.

These beans are special!

Green coffee beans have a shelf life of 4 - 6 months, after roasting a maximum of two weeks if stored correctly, they must be used on the day the bags are open, and the shot shall be extracted within 60 seconds of the grind.

For consistency of coffee we use a full 22 gram basket and generally a 26 second extraction to capture the sweetness of the volatile oils and reduce the bitterness associated with the organic acids that are developed with a long extraction.

The takeaway window from 6am has been really popular - Harrison reckons if you don’t get your coffee within five minutes of ordering, the next one is on him.

Traditionally the restaurant industry generates a large amount of rubbish; how does Blackjacks manage their waste?

Correct; we have a lot of packaging, food scraps and coffee grinds. Our suppliers are encouraged to use cardboard as far as possible in the supply of product. All cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminium containers are sorted on site and recycled. All food scraps other than meat, along with all paper, is combined with the coffee grinds and composted. We have reduced the actual garbage from the business to less than one garbage bag a day. The compost that is being produced is amazing.

When will Jack shout?

We have now taken delivery of our initial range of beverages that will be available to accompany any meal after 10am. Along with local wines, ciders and ales, we have selected a number of fine Australian and New Zealand wines and an extensive selection of boutique and classic beers to enjoy with a meal.

Meet the Head Chef Lennard Tanner and Sous Chef Chris Tart

L

enny, tell us about your cooking history.

I’m an Armidale local boy. Like most teenagers, my hospitality career started at McDonald’s

Armidale. I was then a baker for Moxon’s Bakery. From there, I then moved to Adelaide to work for Bakers Delight. After 10 years with the company at various locations around Australia, I then took up a Sous Chef role at the QA Hotel in Brisbane.

From there, I then went on to to be Head Chef at the Yardbird Ale House in Brisbane and the Pickled Cactus Mexican Restaurant on the Gold Coast, before returning to Armidale in 2014 as the Head chef at the Royal.

Lenny, what excites you about the Royal?

We have just started our “foodie” nights, which include Mexican Monday, Pizza Tuesday, Ribs n Wings Thursday and Steak night Sunday. I feel these nights offer a point of difference between our hotel and our competitors. We have a comprehensive menu for guests to choose from, or they can try some of our new flavours on offer.

Lenny, what are your favourite dishes to serve?

Having worked at a Mexican restaurant for two years, I have developed a liking for “Tex Mex” foods and chillies. So Mexican food and juicy ribs are two main things that I like 20 new england focus.

I really enjoy the pub style food that we prepare here. It’s a lot different to my previous job,where we prepared bulk amounts of food for college students. We have a great team in the kitchen here, and I really enjoy the freedom we have to prepare different food styles and daily specials for the bistro.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have a wife and two beautiful kids whom I love spending time with.

Ingredients

Preparation: 30 mins

Buns: 5 cups plain flour, sifted

Cook time: 20 mins

Get busy in the kitchen this easter with this delicious hot cross bun recipe.

¼ cup caster sugar 2 tsp dried yeast 1 tsp allspice ½ tsp cinnamon 1½ cups sultanas rind of two oranges grated finely 300 ml milk 100 g unsalted butter, coarsely chopped 1egg

Glaze: ¼ cup caster sugar ¼ tsp mixed spice ¼ cup water

Method Combine flour, sugar, yeast, spice mix, sultanas, orange peel and rind and salt in a mixing bowl.

Combine milk and butter in saucepan; heat on low until butter melts.

Add egg to milk mixture in saucepan.

Make a well in the centre of dry mixture, add milk mixture and stir until dough forms.

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.

Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and stand in a warm place until doubled in size. Knock back dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into 16 equal pieces.

Roll each piece into a ball, place in a lightly greased 22 cm-square cake pan, cover with a damp tea towel and stand in a warm place until doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 220°C. Combine flour and water to make a smooth paste. Spoon into a piping bag with a fine nozzle. Pipe lines down each row to form crosses.

Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 200°C and bake for another 10 minutes, or until golden.

Glaze: Combine glaze ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Bring to the boil then reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes.

Brush glaze over buns, transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Variations: Try adding some nuts such as chopped pecans or walnuts or chocolate chips.

When you have children, you expect to have ongoing costs to look after them, feed them, clothe them, house them, amuse them, and so forth. If you buy a car, you expect ongoing maintenance costs. The same principle applies to works of art.

ERAM has a fantastic collection of paintings, prints and drawings which need not only a climate controlled environment to help prevent deterioration, but also in many cases specific treatments and conservation procedures that will extend their life spans, so that they can be enjoyed by generations into the future.

Work needed can involve cleaning, removing stains, de-acidification, preventing paint loss, providing more secure backing and supports and many other processes.

To fund this needed work, NERAM launched its Adopt an Artwork programme on 13 March. Artworks that need conservation work have been

identified, and estimates made of the costs of the needed conservation. Members of the public are invited to Adopt an Artwork, and while you won’t be able to take it home and play with it, you will be ensuring that it has a long and happy life.

Adoptions range from $250 to $10,000 and more. Smaller amounts are also welcome and will be used for the general conservation programme. It would also be possible for a group of people to get together and adopt a painting. As an added bonus, the first $50,000 of donations made before the middle of May, will gain matched funding from Creative Partnerships Australia - effectively doubling the potential of your adoption.

700 artworks for initial adoption, but if you have a particular work in mind that you would like to adopt, talk to the staff and we can add it to the list and to your family! See this programme as a very concrete way of supporting the NERAM collections into the future.

The Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre is happy to announce a new addition to their kitchen staff, a local Aboriginal woman, Patricia Quinlin. Patricia and current cook Gabrielle Stratton (pictured above) do a splendid job in creating new dishes using native spices.

The Centre’s Echidna Café is a unique place to try a selection of Aboriginal-inspired food for lunch or morning and afternoon tea. Be tempted by the soups, pastas, salads or dampers, all prepared with lashings of real bush flavourings, spices, jams, dressings and herbs.

Why did you decide to conduct photography workshops?

TAFE no longer runs photography courses in Armidale.

How long have you been in the photography business, and what drives you?

Sue: As a photographer running my own business, 2004. Taking photos at functions for money of any kind? 1997. Someone who loves taking photos and can describe the difference between aperture and shutter speed? 1971.

What drives me … teaching and learning.

I would describe myself as a lifelong learner; as a consequence, I believe that it’s never too late to take up a new craft or profession or learn new skills and put them to use.

I see people with camera phones, simple “point and shoot” cameras and even more technical DSLRs and wonder at how effective their use of the camera is and are they really capturing the image they want. By learning some basic camera

skills and compositional techniques, everyone can become a better image maker. These are skills that you can use for a long, long time.

Trish: Twelve years ago I started a business in media production, which involved many hours of video recording, sound recording and stills photography.

I was given a Polaroid when I was 15 and loved it.

Taking photos was only a hobby until I bought my first Panasonic video camera in London in 1986. It weighed a “ton” and recorded onto VHS tapes.

I really love photography, for it has the ability to change the way I see things. I started noticing light, shapes, colours and textures, inevitably helping me to realise how much beauty is all around me. What drives me is that I see it as a creative outlet and that I can create art, document

Due to this, we decided to seize the opportunity to use our skills and passion in this area so as to pass them onto others.

Many people purchase a digital camera (some with video capabilities) and never get out of “Auto mode”, thus limiting themselves and not using the functions of many of these cameras.

Our workshops are designed to teach people how to use their digital camera, while learning about composition, lighting and the art of photography in general.

Our classes are conducted in a non-threatening environment and can be tailored to suit individuals and/or groups.

What skill can you give people interested in photography?

Apart from developing practical skills in using their digital camera, it’s important for people to be able to “capture the moment”.

Good photography embodies a lot of different emotions.

It’s about story-telling, anticipation and observation.

How good does your camera have to be?

Difficult to answer, in the sense that it depends on many factors.

One of these, apart from cost, is what you want to do with that photo.

Camera phones are suitable for posting on social media, such as Facebook and Instagram but if you want to work in high end photography, then you need a professional standard camera other than a “point and shoot”.

Plans for the future?

Apart from basic photography courses that we are offering through the New England Community Colleges (NECC), commencing in May this year, we are able to offer other workshops such as: portraiture, night photography, action/movement, food and travel to those people who wish to take their photography skills to another level.

Four Artists COLLABORATE

I

t all began with the inspiration... the Australian landscape and the location... an idyllic coastal landscape near Woolion the North Coast of NSW. Diggers Camp has long been the subject and favourite destination for Stuart Boggs.

It was this fact and an opportunity to share the place with fellow artist and friend Rowen Matthews which grew into this project, and it has been evolving for a couple of years. With the addition of another two artists, Robyn Jackson and Frances Alter, the project was begun.

The logistics of four artists collaborating on the one work required an enormous amount of thinking, planning and discussion.

The physical aspect of the work began with the four artists working on 16 canvases for a week of plein air painting at Diggers Camp - physically laying out the canvases on the grass, arranging, contemplation, more contemplation, discussion and rearranging!

Resulting, eventually, with each artist heading off into the landscape with four canvases

and equipped with charcoal only. That was the first day! On their re grouping after that initial session, the artists laid out their canvases together as one artwork, which it has remained since - albeit continually rearranged.

The next painting session wasn't until two months later! A weekend “plein air” painting, however this time in the rural setting of Arding, on the outskirts of Armidale on Robyn's property. The artwork had grown to 24 canvases, so a large external hanging space was required. It was erected on an external wall of a shed on their property.

JAMES’ STORY JAMES IS A FUN LOVING, OUTGOING GUY WHO LOVES TO PERFORM.

H

e lives in his own apartment in Armidale and has been receiving support from House with No Steps through a self-managed package for about 18 months.

Dancing, singing and smiling are some of James’ favourite activities. He is a talented actor, and has been part of a drama group for six years. James has been the leading man in several of the group’s performances, including playing Robin Hood in Rockin Robin. Last year, James also travelled to Norfolk Island to take part in a drama festival, where he won an award for his acting talents. This year he will be heading to Noosa to make a movie.

James’ support from House with No Steps has been tailored to his individual needs.

His Support Worker, Norman, supports him with his shopping, budgeting, trips to his local Lions Club and occasionally to see the football. Together with Norman’s support and James’ energy and enthusiasm, James’

independence has grown. “James loves his life in his own unit, but he loves going out into the community as well. He plans his own shopping list and shops quite independently, with very little support needed,” said Norman.

cake IN A WORLD OF OFTEN PAINFUL NEWS, IT‘S GOOD TO FEEL A ROMANTIC FLUTTER WITH A GOOD NEWS STORY WHICH CONNECTS ARMIDALE WITH THE MIDDLE EAST. Head of UNE’s School of Humanities, Professor Lloyd Weeks, has a starry academic background and came to UNE because of its international reputation in archaeological research. But it was his expertise in the “development of ancient societies in Iran and the Arabian Peninsula” and his metallurgical skills that led to him being commissioned last year to lead a multi-million dollar project investigating a site discovered by HRH Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai.

Archaeology, of course, is the scientific study of

human history over several million years, and its value lies in learning why civilisations have risen and fallen. The analysis of patterns could impact on our civilisation’s survival - archaeologists are problem solvers.

Since the trove of 3,000 year old bronze, gold and iron artifacts was found in remote sand dunes, Professor Weeks and other international experts as well as a UNE team are beginning what should be a Great Adventure - hard work but thrilling as well. What lies beneath the top layer? What is yet to unfold from this general

area once referred to as the cradle of civilisation?

Gold, the desert, the Sheik and the UNE Professor … I know there are serious implications and I don’t want to trivialise them - but what fun!

Incidentally, thinking about romantic destinations - I found it interesting to realise that Kathmandu is only 300 metres higher than Armidale - some friends said everyone knew that - it still surprised me.

A different historical note was struck by the 40th Anniversary Concert of the NE Ensemble.

Established in 1975 as the first resident musicians in an Australian university, they “quickly achieved national and international recognition” establishing “the NE region as a leading centre of music, culture and performance”. Re-uniting for this concert underlines UNE’s achievements as well as its ongoing community involvement, this time through NECOM. Unique - one of the most misunderstood words in the English language. It’s either unique or not unique. It can’t be quite, or very unique. It’s the only one of its kind. Armidale, Uralla, Walcha, Guyra … all unique with their special qualities and stories. Kentucky has a business whose card reads “NOT FOR EVERYONE … please tell no one”. If you like quirky and craft spirits and wines, do put Eastview Estate on your list. Good marketing capitalises on difference, not lining up to be the same. This goes for tourism and for telling what we have to offer on so many fronts.

Award-winning businesses like Milly Hill Lamb and Superair diversify to stay ahead in their very different industries, both maximising that point of difference they sell to the market. The Central

Judith Wright was an outstanding Australian, and May 31 will mark the centenary of her birth here. Dr Fiona Capp gave UNE‘s Inaugural Judith Wright Lecture recently, celebrating the poet, environmentalist and fighter for Aboriginal rights.

The unexpected throws everything out the window. It’s been a good year for Blue-tongues: my house seems a coveted home (possible maternity ward?) and I don’t mean my garden!

Autumn has arrived in New England High Country

arch provided the New England region with some fabulous events to celebrate the start of autumn. Record numbers turned out for the Autumn Festival.

The festival commenced on Friday evening with the market, rides and a fabulous laser light show that was enjoyed by all. On Saturday, Breakfast with the Band provided a relaxing start to the day, whilst the Campus to City Canter entrants fought for a podium finish in this annual event. The Grand Parade, with approx. 150 vehicles, celebrating all things Armidale was a highlight for all ages.

Each float signifies the diversity of culture and lifestyle found here in Armidale. The high quality of floats this year is reflective of the Armidale Community spirit in supporting this great community event. The weekend finished off with the exciting criterion bike race through the CBD and the Armidale Cup on Monday.

Following on from the success of the initial New England High Country visitor guide, we are very pleased to advise the new visitor guide is nearing completion. This guide will once again promote the southern section of New England High Country, including the towns of Armidale, Guyra, Uralla and Walcha. Thank you to our advertisers; without you we would not have been able to pull together another beautiful guide that showcases our region and entices the visitors to come and stay in New England High Country.

The Visitor Information Centre has a lot of specialty information flyers that have been researched and designed by the staff and volunteers. This month we have launched Bird Watching around Armidale and Uralla pamphlet. This is a wonderful source of information for expert and novice birdwatchers alike, with a cleverly designed 36 new england focus.

The volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre go above and beyond in their roles.

Another example of this dedication involved visitors from France who were without transport and were planning on catching a taxi around Tourist Route 19. Imagine their surprise when two Visitor Information Centre volunteers offered to personally drive them around for the afternoon. As it turned out, these visitors were here to inspect property they were interested in purchasing in Uralla.

One of the volunteers was actually employed on this property in his younger days and proceeded to give them a wonderful insight and special stories of his time working on the property. It takes very special people to volunteer their time in any role; however, we are so lucky to have such dedicated people working at the Visitor Information Centre.

The Armidale Farmers Market is increasingly gaining interest with visitors searching for “Paddock to Plate” experiences. The staff at the Visitor Information Centre receive daily requests for restaurants who have local produce and retailers who sell local products. When designing your menu, customers are looking for specific details such as the name of the farm, or its location. Please advise us if your business is promoting the “paddock to plate” experience, as we are currently designing a new information pamphlet highlighting the businesses where people can either buy or enjoy local produce.

Youth Week and Youth Homelessness week is a yearly event which see Pathfinders and its programmes getting involved in many social and community activities.

athfinders operate a number of programmes and services based in promoting youth and family welfare.

Pathfinders are again holding its annual Pumpkin Run, taking our young people to Newcastle and Sydney to donate pumpkins to the young, homeless and the disadvantaged. Our young people have yielded a healthy crop of pumpkins at Tilbuster Station in Armidale. Over 3,000 pumpkins are growing on Tilbuster Station, which our young people have planted, watered, grown and will cultivate, before making the donation to youth refuges in Newcastle and Sydney.

The donation is an act of compassion and adds a synergy to the Pathfinders’ programme at Tilbuster Station.

Each night in Australia, more than 26,000 young people don’t have a safe and secure place to call home. Young people at Tilbuster

Station wanted to provide practical assistance to homeless youth, draw attention to their plight and the experience of homelessness in Sydney.

Pathfinders’ Family Referral Service (FRS) is located in the Minto Building on Rusden Street and is a key initiative under the Government’s Keep Them Safe Action Plan.

FRS assists children and young people who do not meet the statutory threshold for child protection intervention but would benefit from accessing support to address current problems and prevent future escalations. FRS provides information and links vulnerable children, young people and their families to a range of support services in their local areas.

Pathfinders Specialist Homelessness Services

(SHS) is the delivery of specialist homelessness services through the Going Home Staying Home reforms, with an increased focus on early intervention so people access the right support locally, when they need it and before they reach crisis point. SHS in Armidale can be accessed through the Armidale Youth Refuge and Outreach.

Pathfinders aims to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for each individual who comes in contact with one of our services, whilst also benefitting the larger communities we work within. Newling Primary School is preparing future students for the adventure of a lifetime at school.

The upcoming weekly Transition to School programme at Newling delivers an opportunity for a sustained early childhood experience at school and provides the best possible start to a child’s formal education.

This year Newling “Little Stars” Transition programme welcomes new students to start their school experience on April 23rd, 2015 with a part day programme and will gradually increase to a full day. The Transition class will extend to two full days during Term 3, toward the middle of August, as children become increasingly comfortable in the school environment. New enrolments are welcome, but it is advisable to enrol soon for children to experience the complete benefits of the transition programme, and places are limited.

“Our Transition programme aims to make school, including the environment and the expectations, comfortable and familiar for incoming Kindergarten children,” states Newling Principal Mr Murray

Our Transition teacher designs a tailored programme to her students based on their interests and needs. “It is so important to engage children in the excitement of learning from the start.

Watching the children develop positive learning habits which prepare them for lifelong learning is exciting,” says Mr Cox. ”You can see they are getting off to a great start.”

Music, books, digital stories and creating works of art are all part of the exciting programme.

“A complete school experience is assured each day,” says Principal Murray Cox. “The Transition students follow the normal school times, practices and are paired early with ‘buddies’ as part of the ongoing peer-support programme when the children start Kindergarten. Children experience all aspects of curriculum, including music lessons delivered through our NECOM partnerships, computer technology and language (Mandarin) classes.” One of the important aspects of the transition programme is having the children involved in whole school routines. This enables the children to become acquainted with the school

routines; having older children around, attending assemblies, having a canteen and moving around and playing in large spaces. It places the child at ease with the environment and ensures an easy settlement into school routines and life.

“I notice a big difference in the children coming into Kindergarten who have participated in our transition programme. They are well prepared with essential skills from the day they first walk through the doors for school,” Kindergarten teacher Mrs Elizabeth Peasley noted. “As their Kinder teacher I gain a thorough knowledge of the children and their learning needs from the very start, and they come with the necessary selfhelp and social skills.” Newling offers children an exciting and structured Transition programme to school. The practice has been streamlined with new computerisation, which allows automatic access to processing claims with HICAPS.

The best thing for your child’s mouth above anything else is water. Water contains no sugar or additives. Some juices and cordials can have up 12 teaspoons of sugar, which over time will cause tooth decay and acid erosion.

Parents have asked the ideal time to bring their kids in for the first dental check-up.

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that the first check-up occurs before their first birthday. The most important thing in this appointment is to get the child familiar with the dentist, as that can set the tone for subsequent appointments throughout the child’s life. The worst time to bring a child to the dentist is definitely when the child has a toothache - the child will be in pain, it will be difficult to numb the tooth and it definitely leaves a bad memory in the child’s mind, which makes subsequent appointments more difficult.

INTRUDERS AND SELF DEFENCE

T

he recent proliferation of thieving from homes in the Armidale and wider community has sadly brought the law and many New England folk into closer contact. It has stirred us all, none more so than those directly affected.

Whilst insurance may “replace” certain stolen items, their intrinsic value can never be measured. What can be valued is the sanctity of our homes. It is an absolute, and a sacred domain which we hold dear and in which we are entitled to expect privacy and all manner of things. Fundamentally our homes should be a place of shelter where we can go to sleep with the peaceful assumption that we and our loved ones are safe and secure.

An alarming number of recent robberies violated one of our most basic taboos.

Beyond mere stealing, these thieves entered homes as our people (including children) lay asleep in their beds.

Without advocating any form of vigilante type behaviour, it seems there are many in the community wondering how they might react and where they stand legally in the unfortunate event of meeting with intruders.

Generally speaking such a meeting would be highly unusual. It is unlikely to occur in some office or prearranged place. There would be no written agenda. It would most likely be random, in darkness and without the opportunity to plan or to dress appropriately or at all. Certainly it would be an emotional time, flooded with all manner of thoughts for all protagonists. It could be a most dreadful blind meeting with who knows and how many others skulking around in your own home? It is difficult to know how you might feel and react when suddenly faced with such a situation.

Let’s assume some harm comes to the intruder as the result of your response.

It is important to note that the conduct must be a reasonable response in the circumstances as perceived by the person.

In other words the reasonableness of your response is judged in terms of how you perceived the situation at the time, not how someone else might have.

Interestingly self defence is not a defence in the strict legal sense and needn’t be proven by you but rather has to be disproven by the prosecution. Under section 419 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) the prosecution has the responsibility to prove “beyond reasonable doubt” that the person did not carry out the conduct in self defence. In other words, once self defence is raised it is for the prosecution (police) to prove beyond reasonable doubt either that the accused person did not genuinely believe that it was necessary to act as he or she did or that the act complained of was not a reasonable response in the circumstances.

The matter should not be looked at with the benefit of hindsight, but in the realisation that calm reflection cannot always be expected in a situation such as the person found themself to be in.
