The event now in its fourth year recognises International Women’s Day and celebrates the achievements of various women who inspire many. We caught up with Jeannine recently. Here is her story.

relationship with my husband and enjoying what I do at work is my definition of success.

Your current role is based in Orange, in the central west of NSW. What are some of the advantages of living and working in regional Australia?

I am married to a farmer, and have been able to demonstrate it's possible to have a career west of the Great Dividing Range and live with my family on the farm. The other advantage I have found is that the competition and talent pool for senior roles in regional areas is very small.

I don't think I would have had the same opportunities if I had remained in the city, as I would have been a little fish in a far larger pond. There are sacrifices though, such as I travel over 220 km a day to and from the office. I call this my strategy time or 'me time'.

Which leaders - male or female - do you admire and why?

Throughout my career I have had the luxury or working with some amazing leaders, female and male, who have trusted me to do my role without being micro managed. They told me what outcome they were looking for, and time frames, and let me find my own path.

I have found this 'trust' to be highly motivating, and it has allowed me to be creative and explore what some would call riskier solutions. I have found working with these types of leaders extremely rewarding.

How important have mentors and mentorship been in your professional life?

I don't think I have been 'mentored'.

There is no one person who has guided me or advised me throughout my career. I have observed many managers over the years, and identified what styles I like and what I do not want to replicate. I have experimented, and failed, and learnt from my mistakes. These real life experiences have been the most important throughout my career.

How do you maintain a healthy 'work/ life balance'?

I learnt from a very early age while a nurse, to leave work at work.

I rarely take work home. There is a distinct boundary for me. I never wear work clothes while at home either. I see those clothes as a uniform. Living on a farm, with the nearest neighbours over 2 km away, feels like an oasis, another world, which also assists with switching off. The fact that mobile coverage is variable and sometimes non existent also means I can't instantly respond to emails.

My home life is often so busy, with the boys, my husband, keeping house and the farm - it usually requires my full attention. All these factors have kept me grounded and helped me maintain a high level of resilience.

Paula Jenkins from the Walcha Farmers' Markets and Susie Crawford from Walcha Tourism invite FOCUS readers to attend the Walcha Show and the popular Farmers' Market, to be held on the same weekend in March. hat made you decide to incorporate these two events?

The Walcha Farmers' Markets are held the third Saturday of every month (excluding winter months) from 8.30am -12.30pm at McHattan Park, and in March the Markets fall on the same weekend as the Walcha Show. It seemed like a natural marketing marriage. The Walcha Show will be held Friday 14 and Saturday 15 March at the Walcha Showground, and the Farmers’ Markets on Saturday 15 March.

How are you tying these two Walcha events together?

We are tying these events together with the 'Great Walcha Cook Off', which will be held at the Walcha Show Saturday afternoon. One of our 'Celebrity Chefs' is even famous beyond the Walcha Shire boundary, with actor Ben Mingay joining in on the fun. Ben Mingay is a talented actor, musician and musical theatre performer.

He is currently starring in the Channel 10 drama Wonderland and prior to that appeared in Packed to the Rafters. He has also played major roles in the musical theatre productions of An Officer and A Gentleman, Jersey Boys and Dirty Dancing. Ben will be performing at the Walcha Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning, before donning his chef’s hat at the Walcha Show that afternoon for the 'Great Walcha Cook Off'.

How long have the events been running, and why is this event so important to the Walcha community?

Having commenced in 1878, the Walcha 6 new england focus.

Show still remains a traditional agricultural show with immense community support. Being New England’s oldest town and considered the Pasture Paradise of Australia, Walcha is a long standing district where the agricultural industry has remained the same over the years, with wool, sheep and beef making up Walcha’s major industries. The district’s pride and community spirit is manifested in local events such as the Walcha Show, which is clearly evident with the very well supported pavilion, poultry and livestock exhibits. The photography and art sections in the pavilion never fail to take your breath away, and in the traditional section of jams, preserves and baking, it seems nearly impossible to get a blue ribbon over the regular winners – believe me, I’ve tried!

The Walcha Farmers' Market has been running since September 2013 and includes over 30 produce and plant stalls, gourmet prepared food, fresh coffee, bacon and egg rolls for breakfast and delicious lunch burgers, a home-made milkshake and lemonade stall and so much more. Market goers can also enjoy music and workshops at each market.

Being a vibrant rural community, it made sense to provide a regular event for both the community and visitors that showcases the wonderful produce from the Walcha area and within the region, and to support small and larger producers.

What will be on offer at these events?

Along with the fabulous pavilion exhibits and ring events, the livestock events are the mainstays of the show, with the New England Beef Feature Show being held this year at the Walcha Show.

MICRONS Experienced Chef Kellie Madden has recently opened Café/Restaurant MICRONS in Walcha. She tells us about her love for her community and the love of serving 'real food' in her wool industry themed restaurant.

H

ow long have you been in Walcha, and what do you love most about your community?

I moved to Woolbrook near Walcha about 18 months ago from the Newcastle area, and I would never want to live anywhere else. This is such a beautiful place, and people here are just amazing. Everyone has been so supportive of my decision to open a restaurant here in Walcha, and it shows when they keep coming back. Walcha has a great sense of community; everybody looks out for one another. If anyone needs a hand, the community really pulls together to make it happen. Even in tough times, like the drought at the moment, the people here can still manage to help out other families

when they need it, and I feel privileged to be part of a community like that.

Tell us about your background in the restaurant industry.

I've had about 7 years in the hospitality industry and completed my apprenticeship as a chef in 2005. I worked in restaurants in the Hunter Valley such as Roberts at Peppertree and Blaxland’s. I also worked in Berrima in the Southern Highlands at The White Horse Inn; this where I learnt to make my scones. After that I worked in Nelson Bay and gained experience cooking and preparing seafood.

Describe your cuisine at Microns?

My usual answer to this question is, 'real food': simple and value for money. I never like to put myself in one category or type of

cuisine; I cook what I love and what inspires me at the time. I aim to provide a relaxing and enjoyable meal, where people feel comfortable. The produce available greatly influences my menu; that’s why my à la carte dinner menu changes daily. All of the lamb and beef is all sourced locally, and I hope to increase the local produce on the menu.

Plans for future?

To continue doing what I love! Microns is a part of me, and I put everything I have into it. I hope to continue providing great food for my customers and to gain a few more. I also think that it is really important to give back to the community; my trade and experience allows me to teach local young people a trade, without them having to move to other areas.

here are you from, John and what brought you to Armidale?

I was born in mid-winter on the 22nd July 1926 in the eastern suburbs of Paddington in Sydney.

I found myself in Armidale after en route from Brisbane to judge cattle at the Royal National Show, where I lost a friend, Ian White, as a result of a one vehicle accident.

I was parked in the front of ‘Herbert Park’ Homestead, owned by Mr H.V Jenkins, purchased in 1884. It is said that Mr Jenkins named his new home after his father-inlaw, the honourable Charles Herbert. His son, Mr Richard Charles Cludde Jenkins, inherited ‘Herbert Park’ in 1910. Adjoining stations were 'Thalgarrah', once owned by the original settler, Mr A.E. Bigge, and across the Guyra River (now Gara), was ‘Brooklyn’, owned by the Curtis Family. Then in 1950, it was owned by Mr A.E. Cobcroft, my new employer.

Tell us about your duties as a drover and your time there?

My duties as Stud Groom at ‘Herbert Park’ (later elevated to Stud Master) were to manage the Hereford Stud and the bloodstock horses, including the responsibility for feeding, grooming, training to parade, weighing both horses and cows in readiness for the Royal Shows and meetings and also the documentation and recording of matings and joins along specific blood lines.

It was after these travels I accepted the invitation from City Mutual Life and General Insurance to represent them in the New England (1971-1979) and we moved into a house on Faulkner Street, where I still live today. This is where my third daughter, Katie, came into the world to join up in 1973.

My return to Armidale and to help in raising our children and assist Betty in the shop was brought about by an abrupt souring of relationships with the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW. What keeps you busy today?

My interest is in the Men's Shed. I wash up the dishes and greet people and amuse the members. I visit quite a few people and read to them for those visually impaired. I am also involved in the Historical Society and have written many essays for them.

I also am a tour guide for the historical Saumarez Homestead.

Have you ever been rewarded for your work?

I received an Order of Australia for services to public broadcasting in June 1994, and in May 1997 I was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Tasmania.

Tell us about your night at The Hoskin’s Centre coming up?

Anyone who is attending on the night can expect an entertaining evening of many tales from funny and bizarre to those events that have changed our lives.

I hope to take the audience down memory lane by highlighting how the ABC has developed and changed over the years.

Damien Wills and his family have recently moved to Armidale. With over 25 years’ flying experience, including CPL Charter Pilot flying in remote parts of Australia under his belt, Damien knows just how great flying is. His passion to teach the freedom of flight drove him to open GoFly Aviation and empower others to step up into the skies.

DAMIEN WILLS here are you originally from, and what brings you to Armidale?

For the last ten years our family has lived in Brisbane, then we moved to the Sunshine Coast. Interestingly, one of the first questions we get from locals when they meet our family is why we would move from the beautiful Sunshine Coast to Armidale.

There a few reasons; firstly, everything is so convenient. I was spending two hours in the car every day between work and school. In Armidale, everything is five minutes away. I have an extra hour an half available for the kids and wife every day now.

The schools are a big factor; we have four children, and I don’t think you can find a better town for education for a growing family. Another big reason is that the town is one of the most beautiful towns I have seen in Australia and believe it or not, I like cold weather and I don’t miss the humidity.

While the family misses the beach, with four children you don’t spend every day sitting on a beach.

Lastly, when the owner of the former flight school decided to move onto bigger and better things, there was an opportunity for a new flight school for Armidale, so here we are.

Luckily my wife, Shelly, is very supportive and when the opportunity presented itself, agreed we should move to Armidale immediately (even with a newborn child!)

What are you enjoying most about the New England so far?

The fact that everything is so close, no traffic jams, no long commutes. The fact that we can walk to most places. The lack of humidity and the cool nights. I can drop my kids to

school in front of the school entrance and actually get a car park! I can then be at work in five minutes.

The natural beauty and trees I really love, and the kids love the open spaces and parks.

Also, flying over the Gorge Country is incredibly beautiful, particularly early morning. The parks in this town rival any park I have seen in the major cities (albeit a bit smaller).

Also, many locals that have helped GoFly become a reality. This includes the previous owner of the former flight school, Council representatives at the airport and many other local businesses and individuals. The assistance just does not happen in the big cities or coastal areas. It’s refreshing to come to a town that actually wants your business and is interested in you.

What is GoFly Aviation?

GoFly Aviation is Australia’s largest Recreational Flight School. Recreational aviation offers flight training that utilises new Light Sport aircraft. These aircraft use a lot less fuel than traditional training aircraft, and they’re also very fun to fly. There is also less administration involved with the organisation. For instance, you only need a drivers licence to qualify for the medical requirements. This has the effect of lowering the cost of flight training.

Recreational flight training enables you to gain your Pilot Certificate.

Most students are learning for fun; however, the hours count towards a Private or Commercial Pilots Licence, so future commercial pilots start their training with GoFly. A future commercial pilot or private pilot can save a considerable amount of money by starting their flight training with Recreational Aviation.

We purchased a flight school at Caboolture in Brisbane three years ago. At the time, we had two aircraft, and I was the only instructor.

Experience the Highs What extraordinary regional areas we live in. How much of what is on offer in our own backyard have you experienced? Join me as we ‘Experience the Highs’ of our magnificent region as we ride from Armidale to South West Rocks through the Chandler Valley, the Styx and Oaky Rivers, down onto the Macleay River to Bellbrook, Willawarrin, Kempsey and South West Rocks. ur ride commences on a crisp autumn morning with the fiery colours of the liquid ambers, pistachios and maples warming our hearts as we head slightly north out of Armidale, past the Armidale Pine Forest and then taking a right turn after 24 km onto the Chandler Road. The Chandler Valley is one of the region’s most productive agricultural areas, with its rich soils and reliable water supplies supporting several major cattle and sheep properties. The Chandler River, with its headwaters close to Guyra, is the start of a major river system that is joined by six tributaries, including the Wollomombi, Oaky and Styx rivers before joining the Macleay below Table Top Mountain in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. The Chandler River descends 1,050 metres over its 111 km course.

At the 40 km mark we take another right turn onto the Kilcoy Road and travel 10 km south, past the village of Wollomombi, under the highway via the tunnel and arrive at Chandler School for morning tea. Spirits are high just over half way on the first day, as conversations turn to what lies ahead before we reach our camp for the night.

While the riders have enjoyed meandering through the Chandler Valley, the Catering Crew and an army of supporters have set up base camp at The Junction, prepared and dispatched a crew with lunch to the Forestry Huts for 400 and commenced preparing the evening meal.

We leave The Junction, as we cling to the Macleay River that will lead us all the way to our final destination at South West Rocks, although today our destination is Willawarrin, via Bellbrook. The road provides vistas of the river, valley and mountains beyond as we travel 26 km to Blackbird Flat for morning tea and then on past Comara Station and Five Day creek. Five Day Creek was so named, as it took five days with a horse and dray to reach here from Kempsey. After the Five Day Creek we have to tackle a few short, sharp climbs where the valley narrows, and we head over Pee Dee mountain and back onto the Macleay River at Nulla Nulla Creek. The Willawarrin Hotel traditionally provides us with their classic country entertainment and with plenty of crowd participation, these boys play well into the night. Some will marvel at the quality of the band, some will dance the night away, others take advantage of the quietness back at the sports ground and catch up with their teams as they reflect on the 67 km ridden today and prepare for the final day of our journey.

It’s an early start on the final day to manage the traffic, as we cover the 31 km into Kempsey and across the floodplains of the Macleay River. The final 38 km has us back into our teams and pelotons riding along this almost completely flat section past dairies and cattle country, travelling at times just feet away from the river edge.

R e m e m b e r i n g

JohnFields John Fields was a man dedicated to his profession and the craft of photography. His passion for the discipline and technique of creating a good image was most notable. Local Photographer Simon Scott tells FOCUS more about this talented man.

I

first met John Fields in 2001, just after I had left the UK to migrate to Australia.

A chance meeting had me spy the man with a Nikon FM2 SLR slung over his shoulder; thus began a conversation about American photographers, black and white photography and a friendship that grew to be more than 10 years.

John Fields, American born and raised in Rockport, Massachusetts.

He trained as a documentary filmmaker and photographer after service in the US Navy. Then he exhibited in Massachusetts, and his work was sent on travelling exhibitions around the country. He also held several exhibitions in Boston before he moved to New Zealand in the mid-1960s to be a specialist electron microscope photographer in the cell biology department at Auckland University.

John photographed prodigiously, working in both 35 mm and 5 x 7 and 10 x 8 view camera formats. Through his open-hearted generosity, John did much to raise the standards of photography in New Zealand. In 1973 his collaboration

with the architectural historian John Stacpoole, Victorian Auckland, was published and is a major achievement.

John moved to Sydney, New South Wales, where he taught workshops at the Australian Centre for Photography, then became Chief Photographer at the Australian Museum. In 1987, living in Armidale, NSW, he became Photographerin-Charge at the Media Resources Unit of the University of New England.

John was a man dedicated to his profession and the craft of photography. His passion for the discipline and technique of creating a good image was most notable. Earlier training helped to formulate the necessary discipline and patience that was to be required for John’s further explorations with large format photography and the technique of producing a fine art print.

Visually John saw the world with a quirky eye, always able to capture the narrative of a person’s life, the smaller unseen detail in a building or object that nonetheless helped build the bigger picture of what was around us.

John influenced many young photographers In New Zealand during the '70s; one of them was to become a lecturer in the UK in the early '90s, where I remember being told in a black and white photography class one night about John’s work and his technical ability.

Peter Ireland's obituary in the NZ Photo forum website commented : “The Baigent/Collins/Fields show at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1973 was a revelation. Three bodies of work extensive enough to give a sense of individual style and approach, allowing the realization that 'a voice' could come through a camera. Ironically, perhaps, what first drew me to John Fields’ work was the quality of the printing: a tonality, richness and precision that simply illuminated the subject matter. Through his typical generosity and patience, John shared his technique with many emerging photographers and set new standards of presentation. He was the consummate professional."

This exhibition will show works from John’s Signature’s series of images. These images depict

interiors and detail shots taken in the homes of John's friends and colleagues. The original images were shot using a large format film camera that produced 10 x 8 inch negatives. The negatives captured images that reproduced with great tone, depth, detail and exposure.

Many people who knew John personally found him an extremely generous person with his time and encouragement. I would personally note that John was a great mentor and friend to me with my own career as a photographer and teacher.

Before John passed away, I was led to believe that he had reconciled what was going to happen. He acknowledged he had been given a gift, the gift of ‘really’ seeing but also the ability to capture what he saw. We are lucky to see the fruit of his ability.

Gallery 126 first opened with an exhibition of John's photographs in November 2002. Remembering John Fields - Signature Series - Reminiscences of Friends & Family will open on Friday 14 March at 5pm and run until Saturday 29 March.

Pathfinders celebrates 30 years In 2013 Pathfinders celebrated a significant milestone in reaching 30 years of providing quality support services to the region's children, young people and their families.

How did you celebrate your 30 years? We gathered together at Booloominbah to celebrate with the wonderful staff, Directors, partner and local business organisations, benefactors, funding bodies and special guest Adam Marshall, MP for the Northern Tablelands. We were also proud to welcome the Patron of Pathfinders, the Honourable James Wood. It was a collaboration of all those who have contributed and helped celebrate the work that Pathfinders has achieved over the last 30 years.

How do you continue the excellent work of Pathfinders into the future? Our dedicated staff and Board look forward to further build on the services and projects we provide to our families and communities. 2014 brings so many exciting opportunities for Pathfinders and its programs, including the development of Pathfinders Foster Care program and our Open Door Youth service at Glen Innes. We are currently developing our Tilbuster Working Farm for Young People and have been producing a variety of vegetables on the property used in our internal programs and for distribution to the community. We have recently completed tenders to secure the provision of our range of accommodation support services to young homeless people, the provision of service to people with a disability through the Ability Links Program and a community transport service in the Glen Innes area. Pathfinders will field a team of staff and young people in the Toughen Up Challenge held at Inverell in March. We are taking the next steps to expand the disability assessment centre we have been building with our partner organisation CEVS, in Ghana. We look forward to sharing these exciting developments with the community throughout the year.

enneth Grahame’s tale was first published in 1908, and it has certainly stood the test of time. As US President Roosevelt once remarked, readers soon come to regard the four main animal characters as ‘old friends’.

We are transported into a magical world inhabited by talking animals.

It opens with Rat taking the reclusive Mole in his rowboat to ‘mess about on the river’. They meet up with Toad, who is vain and foolish, but likable.

Against their better judgement, Rat and Mole join Toad on one of his madcap adventures. Toad has an obsession with vehicles. He invariably ends up

crashing them. Ratty, Mole and Badger try to reform Toad, to no avail. The story culminates in the four friends uniting to liberate Toad Hall from the clutches of the sinister weasels.

As with past Felt Tip productions, director Alex Robson has adapted The Wind in the Willows, yet rendered it true to the author’s original story.

The Wind in the Willows features actors well known in past Felt Tip plays, namely Josh Osborne as Rat, Torsten Strokirch as Mole, Peter Newman as Badger and, last but not least, Alex Robson shamelessly typecast as Toad.

Most other characters and the ensemble are played by a talented group of

children and teenagers recruited from Felt Tip’s Youth Division drama students.

A highlight of this production is the outdoor setting in the Moran Amphitheatre located in the park behind NERAM. The producer, Pam Menzies (widely known in Armidale theatre circles as the Queen of props) has designed an enchanting set incorporating the natural beauty of the site.

This production is being shown twice only at 2pm on Saturday 1st and 2pm on Sunday 2 March in the Moran Amphitheatre, behind NERAM gallery, Kentucky St, Armidale. Tickets are available from Carr’s newsXpress or the Felt Tip web site.

It’ll be a great opportunity to do something new and meet new people being as creatively silly as you want to be.

A I suppose I have to say my love of food started at the age of about 12 or 13 under the watchful eye of my late grandmother, Mrs Peggy Godwin. I used to spend a lot of time with her in the kitchen helping her with cakes and steamed suet puddings etc. and also helping with her homemade ginger beer for us grandchildren, which I'm sure was slightly alcoholic! grew up in the UK in the university city of Oxford and started my first part-time job at Jesus College working as a dishy, as you call it over here. My uncle was the head chef, Mr K Morgan; he saw that I had a curiosity for what was being prepared in the kitchen and suggested that it might be a good career for me.

So at the age of 16 after I had finished my school education, I applied for an apprenticeship similar to TAFE, and secured a 3 year course at Trinity college Oxford.

I then moved out of Oxford to a 50 roomed hotel with a 90 seater restaurant, function suites, bar and terrace on the river Thames, called the Shillingford Bridge Hotel. I was sous chef there working under the renowned chef Richard Buy. I was in charge of sauces, meats, training new chefs and had a major input with the chef in planning menus, functions and hotel packages. I was there for two years and saw that a senior sous position had come up at the famous Crooked Billet at Stoke Row, Berkshire.

This was a small but cramped 70 seater gastro pub working for chef owner Paul Clereahugh and Remy Joly. This was the no.1 gastro pub in the UK, and it has been in the top 10 for the last 10 to 15 years - it was a beast of a job,with the

smallest of kitchens with a brigade of 6 or 7 on a shift. The food was great - rustic with a British and world fusion on food, we catered for a lot of A list celebrities. I learnt so much there; it has been invaluable. After 4 years of blood, sweat and toil, I took over the Rising Sun as head chef, turning over 600 meals a week with my own team, my partner, Gabby, Chris, Ian and Max. My menu consisted of local fresh, local game wherever possible - roast venison loin, ham hock terrines, smoked pigeon breast, local trout etc.

We delivered on all aspects, brought the business up, got ourselves in the AA food guide; we had quite a reputation with the Berkshire area.

My take on food is the best ingredients you can get, not over complicating things, letting the food do the talking and leaving customers happy.

So here I am now in Armidale at the Whitebull, which is a great challenge for me and Gabby.

We are still finding our feet with the differences you find from coming from the other side of the world. Our aims are to push the steakhouse forward using the best cuts available, Black Angus, a few new Ă la carte dishes and also to keep the bistro menu interesting, great value and great quality. Did you know that the Heritage Tour Bus has been operating for more than 20 years and carries approximately 4,500 visitors every year? We heard from Prime 7 Sunrise Edwina Bartholomew that a Sydney Taxi driver told her the Armidale Heritage Tour was a ‘must do’ when in Armidale. This month we had a family from Israel who advised us the reason they came to Armidale was due to the fact they heard about our Heritage Tour Bus. The bus operates 7 days per week from the Visitor Information Centre. The bus departs at 10am and returns at 12.30pm, and it is run on donations.

This month we were very sad to farewell Andrew Grigg, who is continuing his university studies in Toowoomba. Andrew has been employed as a Tourism Officer at the Visitor Information Centre for over 3 years and he has been an invaluable source of knowledge for visitors to our region. We wish him all the best in his future studies and career.

Card games have long been a form of social entertainment and despite the competition from television, they have continued to appeal to a large number of people. In particular, Bridge is booming, with an estimated 50 million bridge players world wide and over 160 clubs in NSW alone.

ome more famous bridge players include Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and Omar Sharif. Bridge is a trick-taking card game, a little like Five Hundred or Euchre. It is derived from Whist, which dates back to the 16th Century and was first played in London in 1894. The game involves playing with a partner against an opposing pair. You first bid to the ‘contract’ that best fits the two hands. Whichever pair wins the bidding war gets to play the hand and try to ‘make’ their contract, while the other pair tries to stop them. Scoring is determined by how many tricks you take and the level of the contract.

To bid a ‘grand slam’ and then take all 13 tricks is an exciting moment.

The Armidale Bridge Club is a strong and vibrant club with 160 members from all age groups and walks of life. One of the great aspects of the game is that it transcends social barriers and allows you to sit down with acquaintances or strangers and immediately talk a common language. The club hosts four regular sessions per week at the clubhouse, located at 12 Rockvale Road, with approximately 40 people attending on most occasions. Additional supported play sessions are regularly held for beginners.

Most larger regional centres in NSW have bridge clubs and run regular sessions and occasional major tournaments. The Armidale Bridge Club has two major tournaments per year, one in mid-March and another in November. These events attract players from all along the coast from Sydney to

Coffs Harbour and from a range of local clubs such as Tamworth, Inverell, Glen Innes and Gunnedah. The largest bridge event in Australia, the Gold Coast Bridge Congress, is held annually over a week in late February, with almost 450 tables in play (1,800 people!).

Bridge provides social and intellectual stimulation. Like some other social pastimes, such as Chess, Mah-jong, or Scrabble, Bridge requires you to think carefully, analyse situations, remember what has happened, evaluate hands and communicate with your partner. A lifetime of fun can be spent mastering the many subtle aspects of the game. Club member Jacqui says, “I completed Bridge lessons in 2012 and I am now absolutely hooked. I’m playing three times per week and love the challenge and excitement of the game.”

While Bridge can be challenging to play at higher levels, it is easy to learn the basics. In fact, most learn in approximately 6 two-hour lessons. Lessons provide an understanding of the bidding rules and the basic play techniques. The Armidale Bridge Club provides various types of lessons, usually presented in a weekly format. However, this year, an intensive weekend of lessons is being held for the first time on 5 - 6 April.

This will allow beginners to master the basics in a short period.

I’ve often thought that regional communities can be rather like terrestrial islands. Naturally enough it‘s easy to become absorbed in looking inwards, detached in a weird and busy way from what’s happening elsewhere in the world. A recent trip to Tasmania found an echo - with many of the questions facing them having a familiar ring.

A

varied primary industry is the base, although their transport problems are obviously more complicated than ours by the sea passage to the mainland. Clean green food with great ingredients is an important part of their sales pitch, and that message has really been cutting through with clever marketing.

The university and many research related activities, with an extra and particular marine focus on the Antarctic, add their strands to life on the island.

The historic nature of the place is everpresent and part of life today (although I must admit I found Port Arthur unutterably sad and couldn’t bear to intrude on those unhappy - often unbearably young - ghosts there).

But the past is tangible and woven into the fabric of the island, with the early European architecture of the past unselfconsciously living in the day to day life today. Modern is far from always better, but there seems to have been a real effort to integrate the desirable new into the old. As well, the narrative now tries to tell of the island’s Aboriginal history. (I don’t know, however, that I could quite come to terms with a tour operator’s constant repetition that the Aboriginal people had simply died from the common cold. Maybe.)

The natural beauty of the place is unforgettable, and it’s shown off proudly by its people, who communicate such genuine joy that people are coming to share it. The access to wildlife - in the wild - is memorable: I’d certainly never been so close to an albatross following a boat before, or seen seals and dolphins at home.

Tasmanians are certainly making the most of the cultural side of their life and constantly expanding opportunities in the most inventive ways. Which of course brings me to MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art - the extraordinary, mad, daring, wonderful folly of an enterprise that local boy/man/’one-off’

When he looked up at the stars, he reached out to them and grabbed a handful! It’s far from any gallery in the normal sense but it is his search through the plus and the minus of life. The building is astonishing and wonderful.

Whatever it is, it is drawing people from around the world, and when they come they then go looking for other things to do, and the local people are there ready to take them on all sorts of special adventures. Leadership can bring change in surprising packages.

When Tasmanians talk about how they are trying to manage their economy and lifestyle for the future, they also talk about the NBN and the terrific time advantage it is giving them to develop new businesses before it’s rolled out everywhere. They and we are lucky, whether or not we fully realise it. Seize the day!

There are many things that we have in common with this island called Tasmania, and they certainly seem to be having that ‘in’ word - the conversation - about how they can best manage their future. In a changing world, we are all confronted with win some, lose some situations.

It is always when the whole picture comes together that visitors become ambassadors, and certainly the local people we came in contact with were enthused with the possibilities. Nothing just happens by itself, does it?

Anyone who doesn’t see problems in planning for the future isn’t looking very hard, but it’s also hard to feel sorry for people who start with all the advantages we have – look out from our island and see how best we can build on what we have.

And we should enjoy it as well, or we’re missing something about life’s opportunities.

Aging Gracefully Time takes its toll on the human body in different ways and skin is no exception.

In fact, the effects of excessive exposure of fair skin to the harsh Australian sun compounds the effects of aging. nitially, the changes are noted on the surface as blotchy, pigmented marks and fine blood vessels on the face. Later, skin begins to thin and sag due to collagen in the dermis (deeper part of skin) losing substance and the thinning of the fat layer beneath the skin.

Facial Rejuvenation is now well established, using skin care and protection as well as lasers and surgical methods as the basic building blocks.

Skin care is a must and refers to adequate moisturising of skin and avoidance of the use of drying agents including some soaps and cosmetics.

Skin protection is the use of suitable clothes and sunblocks and the avoidance of overexposure to the sun.

“PhotoThermoLysis” (photo=light/ thermal=heat/lysis=destroy) is the principle by which lasers work to rejuvenate skin. Both “skin peeling” and “non skin peeling” methods are available and PhotoThermoLysis produces new collagen, with a resultant increase in skin tone (firmness) and a decrease in the sagging of skin. In addition, the skin looks and feels better too.

“Dermal Fillers” are injections used to place synthetic collagen in the dermis and are appropriate for softening facial lines and grooves; in effect, this temporarily reproduces the effects of the laser treatment.

There are various grades of fillers used in different parts of the face: Subcutaneous Fillers are “heavy

duty” fillers which are used beneath the skin to improve contour defects in the face and the rest of the body.

The effect is very significant due to the volume and the nature of the filler used.

Anti-wrinkle injections are also used to soften facial lines by partial paralysis of superficial facial muscles.

Surgical methods of facial rejuvenation have become more sophisticated over the years, with the emphasis more on restoration rather than removal and/or tightening. In a facelift operation, where previously skin removal and tightening were the mainstays, now there is much less removal and much more restoration of tissues to the original site, reducing the effects of sagging and stretch.

Vicki Kembery So, you’re planning a holiday and you just happen to mention your plans to a couple of your friends and family. We all know that friends and family have the best intentions when they turn and say, “Oh no, didn’t you know that …” or, ‘”When my friends went there, they got mugged/drugged/lost/sick” … fill in the blank space, as you see fit. nd so begins the planting of the seeds of doubt, so that your exciting, once-in-a-lifetime holiday suddenly becomes the trip from hell, and you haven’t even left yet!

Instead of giving you the 'top 10 tips to make your holiday bullet-proof' I’m going to give you a taste of some of the worst travel advice or 'help' that would-be travellers can be given by wellmeaning friends, work-mates and family. This is the advice you should listen to politely, nod in agreement with, and then totally ignore!

Don’t pre-book your hotels; do it when you get there. Or, plan everything/don't plan anything.

Some wise traveller, who no doubt has been all over the world tells you, "Don’t bother prebooking a hotel before you get to a destination.

It's better to spend some time visiting the hotels first, then make a decision.” Great fun when you’ve just landed somewhere after a 20 hour flight, with your luggage in tow and not an inkling on how to speak the local lingo. The person who gave you this advice will spend four hours wandering the streets in search of the 'best value' bed in Copenhagen, lugging all their possessions and spending $30 on public transport or taxis, before settling for either a cockroach infested hostel or a luxury hotel that costs $500/ night. Meanwhile, you (who was smart enough to pre-book your hotel) have checked in, had a shower and maybe a nap, checked out the museum, had lunch and are now ready to hit the streets again for some serious sight-seeing.

And as aunty Julie tells you to “plan everything before you go” your mate’s sister’s boyfriend says “Hey dude, just go with the flow and ride the tide …” Both bits of advice have their pros and cons. Pre-booking simply every single movement right down to when you are going to eat, drink and … well you know what, can make your trip seem more like an Army boot camp than a holiday. But not having any plans can mean many wasted hours (and even days) looking for a place to stay or waiting for a train, bus or plane, instead of sitting on a sun-drenched beach with a pina-colada in hand.

It really comes down to where you are going, what time of the year you are going (will you be there in peak-tourist time or their downtime) and most importantly, how long you are away, which will determine how much or how little you should consider pre-booking.

Striking a balance between planned and unplanned travel is the key to a great and fulfilling holiday.

You can find whatever information you need online.

Unfortunately, there is so much rubbish advice online, that it’s very difficult to separate the real pearls of wisdom from the chaff. Relying solely on travel advice gleaned from hours of searching online is still fraught with dangers and heartache. Don’t get me wrong - there are some very good destination-specific websites around, but for every one of those there are a hundred sites that are purely put together by people who believe their way is the only way and everyone has exactly the same tastes and requirements as they do. Some sites are way out of date and contain 'facts' that are questionable, to say the least. Me? I’d rather rely on advice from people in the business - your travel agent is a good place to start!

Bring more clothes than you might need, so you don’t have to do laundry.

This may be right literally, but it’s just not very helpful. In today’s airline world, where luggage is weighed and measured down to the millimetre, less is best. I always pack for a week; whether I’m going for 2 days or 40 days, I pack for a week (which I admit, means I overpack for that 2 day trip – guilty). But the best way to keep your luggage weight down and making laundry easy is to take light-weight, easy to wash and dry clothing. And a big tip – wool is best, whether you’re travelling in winter or summer. Doing laundry in most places is pretty easy – some can be done by hand in your hotel room, and for the bigger stuff most cities have laundromats where you can drop off stuff in the morning and pick up in the afternoon.

There’s plenty more 'bad advice' I could give you, but I’ve run out of room. So, the best advice I can give is 'happy travels'. new england focus 39

2014 marks 56 years of national Seniors Week in NSW. FOCUS catches up with the Armidale Seniors Week Planning Committee, to see what they have in store for this year ’s LIVE LIFE theme.

W

hat is Seniors Week, for those who don’t know?

Seniors Week celebrates the valuable contribution seniors make to our community.

Here in Armidale, it is our way of saying thank you to seniors and a great opportunity for all the generations to join with older people to celebrate. The theme is LIVE LIFE, and it aims to encourage seniors to actively participate in one of the 700 events taking place across NSW from Saturday 15 March to Sunday 23 March.

Tell us about the committee ...

The Armidale Seniors Week Planning Committee has developed a full program of fun activities, open days and opportunity for people 60 years and over or Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders who are 50 years or over to participate in public events. The Committee extends a warm welcome to all seniors from the Armidale Community and our friends from surrounding areas such as Uralla, Guyra and Walcha.

The Planning Committee consists of aged care and community service providers, recreation and leisure groups for seniors and dedicated community members who have a passion for promoting healthy and active ageing events during Seniors Week.

Steve Widders joins the committee as an ambassador for Seniors Week.

The Planning Committee has coordinated a varied program of events that will take place during NSW Seniors Week in Armidale, where there will be choice and options for community participation and social interaction.

It is important to mention, the Seniors Week program of events in Armidale has been developed without additional funding by the NSW Government and has been a collaborative community project by Council’s Aged & Disability Specialist Worker, community service interagency network, local organisations, service providers and seniors group representatives who are all dedicated and committed to continuing to support the seniors from our community.

The committee is also busy planning a Seniors Expo for May 2014.

The expo will promote healthy and active ageing in Armidale.

Affordable Retirement Coming Soon to Armidale National Retirement Village developer and operator Oak Tree Retirement Villages is set to make Armidale home, with the commencement of construction of its newest Village located on the corner of Beardy and Martin Streets in May/June this year.

W

hy is it so important to stay active later in life?

Mally: We live in a wonderful time where people are living longer, so it is more important than ever to keep yourself fit and well, so you can enjoy a long, happy and healthy life.

By staying active, we keep our bodies well and our minds strong and hopefully the aches and pains at bay!

The benefits of exercising include stronger muscles, body balance and awareness, reduced body fat, increased bone density and muscle mass, increased energy, improved mobility and more flexibility. All of this can lead to greater confidence in our self physically.

Mentally, an active life gives you a greater sense of wellbeing through the release of endorphins or 'happy hormones' into the body.

It can also improve self-esteem and motivation and has been proven to help with sleep.

How can we best do this?

Mally: If you're exercising regularly, give yourself a pat on the back, but for those who have not exercised in a while, it is never too late to start. You may think that your sore knees or your aching back stops you from exercising. In fact not; exercise helps to keep the joints healthy and in turn can help relieve pain. I’m sure you have heard of the term, “use it or lose it”; and in this case, it is true.

There are many ways to be active and finding

a way that suits you is important. Consider joining a sporting club, the gym or a fitness group, so you can enjoy the social interaction as well.

If you haven't been active for a while, you might need to start slowly and build up, and you may also benefit from some instruction and motivation to help you on your way.

The Ascent Group Care for Seniors For those who don’t know, what is Armidale Care for Seniors Inc.?

We are a not for profit organisation that provides services focusing on keeping senior members of the Armidale and surrounding areas living independently in their own home. Our services include both social and everyday needs support.

Tell us about your different coordinators and programs.

Our social programs has seen a new coordinator, Nicole, commence at the start of the year. Nicole will continue with the current programmes, but has many ideas to freshen things up.

Natasha continues to coordinate the individual support program, linking volunteers with clients to assist them with everyday activities such as shopping, transport or other needs.

What is in store for 2014?

For the younger, more active seniors, we are looking at establishing a walking group, cards for the enthusiasts, scrapbooking/card making for the crafty, and our usual outings with an away trip organised for April.

Splinter Group, our woodworking group, has become so popular, that a new day (Thursday) has been added to the usual Wednesday.

Computer Group offer individual support to both Mac and PC users to learn and achieve personal goals by tailoring support to individual requests. This is just a small snippet of what we currently and plan to do, so keep an eye out for our flyers.

Our services for older people living in their own homes and for younger people with a disability can be accessed through Uralla Home and Community Care (Uralla HACC), which runs Centre Based Day Care, Social Support, Community Transport in the Uralla Shire.

We can’t image Uralla HACC or our other services without the power of volunteers. They are critical to people receiving the support that need.

hat is the Community Garden and its purpose?

Let's face it: gardens are pretty great places and fresh food is great too even better when it hasn't been sprayed with all sorts of stuff you really don't want to eat. Then, add in the concept of this garden slowly coming to life through the combined efforts of a whole lot of different people who turn up when they can, to lend a hand and share in the satisfaction of seeing it all take shape and make progress, knowing that they have been a part of making that happen ... that's our community garden. Over time, more and more people will discover the garden and relate to it in their own way; they may want to learn more about growing their own food or get some physical exercise after a week of sitting behind a desk; they may want to just stop by for a chat, or sit under the shade of an apple tree and read a book.

The garden is still very much in its early stages; it will gradually become whatever the community needs it to be and what the community makes of it.

House with No Steps House with No Steps (HWNS) has had some great success stories with their self managed packages. Self-managed packages enable a person with a disability to make their own decisions about how they spend their funding , the services and support they receive and who they want to deliver them.

ess and Jade have both moved to a self-managed package and are getting what they want out of life.

Jess’s Story Jess has a unique sense of style and is always accessorised with her own handmade jewellery. She is a creative spirit and loves art, sewing and photography. When Jess left school, she wasn’t sure if a traditional community participation program would best suit her creative interests. So with the support of HWNS, Jess decided to try a self-managed package.

Having a self-managed package means Jess is able to choose activities she is most passionate about, like dancing, swimming and art. HWNS supports Jess and Denise, Jess’s mum, by coordinating the financial side of the package and providing ongoing guidance, support and encouragement to both.

Jess’s confidence has really grown since starting her self-managed package. Denise said, “Jessica used to always be very quiet,

but she’s opened up quite a lot. She mixes more, she talks to people and everyone’s remarking on how she’s talking now and communicating more.”

Jess says her favourite part of her selfmanaged package is “meeting new people”.

She is always on the look out for interesting new classes and activities and is connecting with her indigenous roots and learning more about the Aboriginal culture. One of her goals for the future is to learn the art of traditional Aboriginal dot painting, but her biggest goal is to be an artist.

Jade’s Story Jade is a very social young man with a great sense of humour. He lives in HWNS community living and loves nothing more than spending a Friday night down at the pub with his mates.

Jade recently transitioned from a HWNS community participation program to a selfmanaged package.

Jade’s support worker Jane said, “I think

self-managed for him was about choice. Jade’s made a choice about the staff working with him, what he wants to do and is focusing on his interests.

Jade now has four support staff and is able to choose who he would like to support him depending on the activity he wishes to do that particular day.

“What Jade particularly loves is catching up with friends, meeting new people out in the community and having lunches”, said Jane.

Support worker Beth said she has noticed lots of changes in Jade with his self-managed

package. “He’s come out of his shell; he’s tried different things that he never thought possible. He has become part of the community.”

A self-managed package has opened many doors and possibilities for Jade’s future. Jade recently began a work experience position delivering memos to local shops and hopes to find a job in the future.

“ Armidale had a Railway Restaurant Idea Description: To refurbish the old railway carriages up on the rails at the end of Niagara St and convert them into a rolling restaurant that travels between Armidale and Walcha every hour, so that people eating may enjoy a pleasant view.

The restoration of the original railway carriages would ensure old fashioned charm was carried through the transformation; in contrast, the refurbishment on the interior would boast modern elegance. Imagine fine dining with family and friends, taking in and appreciating the picturesque New England landscape. There would be a full bar, high quality chefs and top notch service.

When en route, the carriages’ station would be a comfy and modern space where guests would be able to relax, enjoy light refreshments and converse while awaiting the train.

On weekend nights, there would be a local live Jazz band playing in the station, filling the space with gentle music and creating a nostalgic ambience. The train would be open for lunch and dinner, with the aim of doing two trips per time slot. The mingling of guests from both Walcha and Armidale would also bring the towns closer and be a unique feature in country NSW. Community Benefits: The Railway Restaurant would provide jobs

to the town, not only during construction but also after it kicked off. It would also remove an eyesore from two of the busiest streets in the town. Not only would the Railway Restaurant be economically advantageous for Armidale in terms of establishing jobs, but it would be so well renowned as a unique tourist attraction, it would bring travellers from all over the country.

Thinking Business, Estate Planning & Trusts – with Chris Serow

THINKING

BUSINESS, ESTATE PLANNING & TRUSTS treaming provisions in the Tax Act have had a direct impact on Discretionary and Testamentary Trusts. As part of the process of considering proper business structures or as part of estate planning, it is common to establish a trust structure. Most family trusts are discretionary trusts. That means that the trustee has power to decide which of the beneficiaries will participate in any distributions of income or capital and amongst those participating beneficiaries what share, percentage or amount each will receive.

Many people as part of prudent estate planning have wills that create testamentary trusts which include discretionary powers given to the trustees.

Prior to the 2010 – 2011 tax year well drawn trust deeds and wills with testamentary trusts covered all the foreseeable possibilities and appropriately empowered the trustee to make discretionary distributions of both income (yearly) and capital. The Tax Laws Amendment (2011 Measures No5) Act 2011 significantly altered the procedural requirements as to the tax treatment of capital gains and the distribution of franked or partly franked dividends on shares and as to the allocation of franking credits attached to those dividends.

As a result of the enactment of that legislation, many wills and family trusts drafted before 2011 do not adequately empower trustees to allocate these capital gains and franking credits and the result can be substantial adverse tax liabilities for the family trust or the beneficiaries under wills.

What the tax law now requires is that:• the definition of income must include capital gains and franking credits; • a particular beneficiary(s) is designated as “specifically entitled” to an amount of a specific capital gain after offsetting any capital losses. Only then will the net capital gain be attributed for tax purposes to that specific beneficiary;

• where the trustee holds shares in a company and receives a franked or partly franked dividend from that company, the assessable income of the trust includes the franking credit on that distribution (as well as the dividend itself). The trustee must then decide which beneficiary or beneficiaries is “specifically entitled” to receive the franked dividend.

The franked distribution (dividend) and the franking credits are then “streamed” to that specific beneficiary/ beneficiaries). For this to occur, the Trust Deed must contain dividend streaming provisions that empower the trustee to stream franked distributions “to a specifically entitled” beneficiary, and, • The Trustee must keep records that clearly detail all such allocations.

If your family trust does not contain adequate provisions that empower your trustee to decide which beneficiaries are specifically entitled to:• Capital gains; • Franked dividends and franking credits; and, • Keep the required records, there may be serious adverse tax consequences to your family trust or testamentary trust and also to the beneficiaries.

The keeping of proper records as to the allocation of capital gains and franked distributions are essential for the allocations to be effective. Your Trust Deed must provide for this.

If you have, as part of your business or estate planning arrangements a will that contains testamentary trusts, or if you receive income by way of franked dividends through a discretionary trust structure you should seek accounting, financial, legal and tax advice as to the legislative changes might affect you. By obtaining professional advice to review your discretionary trust and/or will you may have the opportunity to maximise the benefit to the beneficiaries.
