Higginbottom Carol Higginbottom for the past 5 years has held a Can Assist Melbourne Cup Luncheon in her very own garden. She tells us more about her amazing support for Can Assist.

ow long have you been involved with Can Assist?

Also, tell us about your most recent Melbourne Cup Day luncheon and how long you've been holding this event ... I have been involved in Can Assist since 2000. Can Assist was originally formed 57 years ago to provide accommodation and support for country cancer patients having treatment in Sydney. The branch was formed in Armidale in 1999. Guyra has a branch and Uralla has had a Can Assist Branch for over 20 years, and their major fundraiser was always a Melbourne Cup Luncheon – which was held at the home of Jenny and Bob Fulcher.

About 7 years ago, the Uralla branch decided they would not continue with the luncheon and asked our Armidale branch if we would like to continue the tradition. We initially held the luncheon for a couple of years in Armidale at an inside venue but people missed the garden setting of the lunch, so we moved back to Uralla with the support of the Uralla branch, and it has been held in our garden for the last 5 years. This year was our most successful year, with 220 people attending and around $13,000 raised.

How does this huge event come together each year?

We could not hold the event without the wonderful support of the community and also the many

friends, family and neighbours who come to help.

Our major supporter is Steve Jamsek from C2C party hire, who provides the marquee for the event.

This year the Armidale Bowling Club sponsored the food and drink, and we have many other supporters who help with the day. Jenny and Gerard Hanna put together a beautiful fashion parade. Hanna’s have always provided the fashion parade for the event since it first began over 20 years ago.

ell us a bit about you and your family ... I was born in Armidale and went to school there. I have two brothers: Jason, who is older, and Adam is my younger brother. We were brought up on the family farm 45 km east of Armidale; the farm is used for beef cattle production and we also run horses, which are used for both work and recreation.

My wife, Sarah, and our two boys, Thomas and Paddy, make regular visits to the farm enjoying the outdoors and the run of the mill farm duties. Jason and his wife, Karen, have just had their first baby, Harrison. Jason works at Barraba on a beef, sheep and cropping enterprise, while Karen is busy looking after Harrison.

Adam is working on Jeogla station and is living the Australian dream. My mum, Trish, has been working as office and HR manager at ABRI in Armidale for the past 11.5 years and is now also managing our home place.

How long have you been an equine dentist, and where did it all began? I developed an interest in equine dentistry through my father-in-law, Russell, who is a horse dentist practicing in South West Victoria. I 6 new england focus.

We chat with Chloe about her extraordinary life experiences thus far and her visit to Armidale as special guest at the College’s Annual Speech Day.

n leaving school, did you ever think you’d be doing what you do now? What were you career aspirations then, and how have they developed over that time? During my years at secondary school I was passionate about sport and decided to pursue a degree in Sports Media at the University of Canberra, before taking a job with Network Ten’s sports department in Sydney. I quickly realised the sports industry was not my calling and followed my childhood dream of travelling to East Africa. I was confident things would fall into place once I got to Tanzania. As predicted, one opportunity led to another, and I developed an interest and passion for community development. I spent six years working on development initiatives across Africa and Asia before founding the Peaks Foundation with my business partner, Laura Borner, in October 2010.

You have achieved so much in a relative short time, Chloe. Are you able to nominate some of your life’s highlights so far? I left Australia 10 years ago and have lived and worked in Tanzania, UK, Switzerland, France and now Singapore. Every single experience has had its highs and lows and actually there are too many highlights to mention, but if I were to pick three they would be the following. 1. The months we spent driving 20,000 km around Africa in an old Landrover with no time restrictions and a huge amount of freedom. 2. The past three years working full-time with Peaks Foundation and the amazing experiences it has provided, such as climbing some of the world’s highest peaks and meeting women and girls from communities all over the world. 3. The arrival of our two children and the joy (and challenges) that arises when raising a family.

What inspired you to establish the Peaks Foundation? What is the Foundation’s purpose? We believe in women and girls reaching their highest potential. After living and working in Tanzania, we founded 3 Peaks 3 Weeks Africa, a mountain trekking expedition to climb three of East Africa’s highest peak in less than three weeks to raise funds for local non-profit organisations working in health, education and the environment. However, over time and as Laura and I matured, we started to understand in more detail the challenges facing women. Therefore, when we incorporated Peaks Foundation in 2010, we focused on the empowerment and promotion of women and

irls. We have invested over $1 million in femalegirls. focused initiatives and have taken women from 15 years of age to 63 years of age on mountain based expeditions across the globe.

As a mum now, Chloe, what’s your secret to the work/life balance? There have certainly been moments since our first child was born in 2009 that have not gone smoothly, and as a family we made adjustments and sacrifices to find that balance. Currently we have a fantastic childcare situation for our young children, and I have chosen a career path that has provided flexibility.

By choosing this career path in many ways my work and personal life have blended in to one. Peaks Foundation is very much a part of the family, to the point where Olive, my daughter, has joined me on work expeditions in Africa, and the children often join meetings and events.

As a PLC Armidale Old Girl, what words of advice have you for the current students? Young people today will have many different careers and they need to be able to take advantage of all of the different opportunities. I think you can find purpose in anything you do. It’s what you make of it. I think you need to seize every opportunity. For me, getting out into the world and challenging all my assumptions was the greatest thing that ever happened. I now have a completely different view of things. These life experiences are incredibly important and in an ever-changing global world, global understanding and the ability to be innovative will be increasingly important.

You will also be attending a special community event at PLC on Wednesday night, December 4, featuring the inspiring documentary Mountains Will Move. Tell us a little more about this and your passion for girls’ education globally? In October

2012, a team of young women from PLC Armidale and the School of St Jude united to climb Tanzania’s second highest peak, Mt Meru. Mountains Will Move is their very inspiring story.

Originally Peaks Foundation approached PLC requesting the girls raise funds to enable the girls at St Jude’s to climb their local mountain, but PLC took it one step further, literally, and joined the expedition. It has had such a positive impact on the girls who took part in this program, that it has now become a large focus of the Peaks Foundation.

We invest in these programs because we believe girls play a crucial role in solving the most persistent development problems we face in the world today and by providing critical funds to education, healthcare and leadership initiatives, we can change the cycle of poverty and positively impact communities all over the world.

How can the Armidale community get involved and support the Peaks Foundation?

We have had a lot of support from the Armidale community over the past seven years due to the support of my family and friends in Armidale.

Only last year a group of Armidale women, including my sister-in-law, joined a Peaks Foundation expedition in India.

Peaks Foundation organises trekking expeditions for any group interested in empowering women and girls, so if anyone is interested in climbing a mountain in support of women and girls, we encourage them to get in touch – chloe@ peaksfoundation.org Operational costs of non-profit organisations are also an ongoing challenge, so any financial contribution to the work of the Foundation is obviously hugely appreciated!

Holly Harris’ ultimate goal is to represent Australia at the Olympics for mountain biking. She shares her journey so far and her persistence for a winning future.

i Holly. where did it all begin for you and cycling? I began cycling when I was around 15 just for fitness with my Dad. A few months later, I did a race as part of the Gnatpak series in Coffs Harbour for a bit of fun, and somehow I managed to win! After winning my first race, I got into riding a bit more and joined the New England Mountain Bikers and continued racing the Gnatpak series as I had good competition from Emily, who was and still is my main competition in Australia. I kept racing and training until I reached a national level and got on the then Anytime Fitness team, which is now known as Target TREK. After being selected on the team, I was able to race in higher level races and really improve my skills, and this encouraged me to start competing at a higher level.

What does your training involve?

I train every day, usually twice a day, either on my mountain bike or road bike and sometimes in the gym. At the moment I am working on my base fitness, which involves riding a lot of kilometres. I am really trying to work on my skills, as the courses overseas are becoming more

and more technical. I am lucky that my mountain bike club, NEMTB, is really active in creating and maintaining some amazing trails for me to train on! There are always lots of people riding around the Armidale area, which is really great because company when you’re training really makes the difference.

hat essentially is a Leadership Circle? Leadership Circles are targeted for personnel in leadership and management positions or for those who aspire to such positions of responsibility.

Leadership Circles are equal status, collaborative, challenging and confidential gatherings where participants learn from each other about the achievement of organisational goals and about balance between organisational goals and personal goals.

• Discussion on topic of interest (led by facilitator) • Topic of concern (introduced and led by a group member) Throughout the workshops, participants take on different roles facilitating the above sessions. They are also encouraged to read widely on related topics in between the monthly sessions, with the facilitator providing all the reading materials. A number of psychometric testing tools (like MBTI) are provided also to assist learning more about themselves.

The objective of Leadership Circles is to develop more confident and successful leaders by:

Circles are facilitated by trained professionals and skilled facilitators with a record of success in organisational leadership.

• Supporting participants in their personal development, leading to a greater selfawareness and an appreciation of the impact one has on others;

The facilitator works with each member individually and with the group throughout the life of the Circle, confidentially to aid individual and group development.

• Assisting participants in ‘discovering’ what leadership is and what is their own leadership style;

How long have they been offered?

Leadership Circles have been offered to diverse Ausralian organisations, communities and to individuals since 1999.

• Creating an environment that builds long lasting relationships built on trust; and • Growing well-rounded professionals that will ultimately improve the performance of their organisations, through their ability to build successful relationships with clients and lead others within the business.

Full-time commitment and participation is required of members for the 10-12 months of a Leadership Circle.

How does a Circle operate? Each 10 - 12, four-hour monthly workshop generally consists of the following sessions: • Catch up discussion (‘check-in’) • Guest speaker 12 new england focus.

How does this compare with other leadership development programs on offer? Leadership Circles have been designed to provide lasting and enduring personal and professional development using the best available knowledge of, and research about, learning for individuals especially in group, team and organisation settings.

Who has been involved in Leadership Circles, and what organisations have found them valuable? Diverse organisations have utilised Leadership Circles to develop personnel at all stages of their careers.

Individual people have sought and used Circles

as self-initiated learning.

Organisations involved since 1999 include engineering, broad infrastructure, universities, law, energy firms and schools and school systems (both state and independent).

hat is your background; are you originally from Armidale? I came to Armidale on 3 January 1980, having spent the previous three years teaching at Coonamble High School.

Where do you find most of your items? Most of my ships and display cases have been imported from overseas, with Vietnam, USA, UK, Thailand and Fiji being prominent. I sourced them on the internet, with eBay being used on occasion.

It’s a reasonably costly hobby, as I need to buy the models, glass display cases, display tables and pay for the freight from overseas as well as quarantine.

Still, it’s a great hobby.

Have you ever exhibited your collection? I have not exhibited my collection, but friends and visitors love the ships.

Is your collection still growing? I have also taken to buying prints of ships and having them framed, as I am running out of space for the models to be displayed. My wife, Nina, said the home is starting to look like a maritime museum, but I am sure she enjoys the collection too. I would love to grow my collection, but that’s another story.

New England Girls’ School has had an astounding year in sport, blitzing their competitors in the 2013 NSW IGGSA netball tournament. Keen to capitalise on its talent as well as offer its inspiration to other netballers from around the state, NEGS is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural New England Netball Carnival (NENC), to be held Saturday 26 to Sunday 27 April 2014 over the ANZAC weekend. Laura Cambridge, a keen netball enthusiast,, talented teacher & soon-to-be Sports Co-ordinator gives us the inside scoop.

hat is your role at NEGS and your role with the NENC? I currently teach wonderful Year 2/3 at St John's Junior School at NEGS. However, in 2014 I will be making the move to the Senior School (still at NEGS) and will be teaching PDHPE and taking on the position of Sports Coordinator.

The NENC has an enthusiastic and diverse committee, including parents, teachers, administration staff and Old Girls. After 20 years in the sport of netball, including playing, umpiring, coaching and organising at a high level, my role within the committee is to provide expertise. I am in charge of the general running and preparation of the carnival, including draws, results, information packs and liaising with umpires and management. As we get closer to the date, I am sure there will be many more responsibilities that I will happily take on.

Tell us a little bit about yourself? I grew up on the Far North Coast in a small town called Billinudgel. Netball was the dominant sport played in the Byron shire and I started to play when I was eight, after a short stint playing cricket. On leaving high school, I attended UNE and on completion, began my teaching career in Armidale. I have been teaching for 6 years and this is my second year teaching at St John’s/NEGS, which I am loving.

For those who have not previously visited the New England region during autumn, they will be given a stunning view of what the area has to offer.

How will this benefit the community?

People attending the NENC will see Armidale and the surrounding New England region at its autumnal finest. A large volume of people will be accompanying the teams, including families who will no doubt wish to see and use the facilities that Armidale provides.

Is this an ongoing event? The NENC Committee expect that this will be the first of many successful NENC weekends which will grow and expand over the years. We are looking to secure sponsorship from the local community and beyond to ensure that the event will have a long future within Armidale.

Ellen Newberry from Centro Armidale fills us in on the latest happenings at the centre.

C

entro Armidale has been in Armidale for six years now.

Tell us about the journey ... Centro Armidale entered the Armidale community in 2007, during a period of expansion for the Armidale retail environment, with the aim of becoming the premier shopping destination in New England and eliminating the need for Armidale community members to travel away from the area for their shopping needs.

Consumers vote with their feet, and judging by regularly increasing traffic figures for the centre, and strong sales growth, Centro Armidale is achieving that goal.

The Centre opened with a wide mix of retailers, and is proud to have retained such a diverse offering for its customers. Interestingly, we have seen an increase in the number of local businesses and franchisees trading in the Centre, and over a third of our specialty stores are now locally owned, which is great news for the Armidale community!

The centre has also adopted a unique marketing strategy, known as the Freebies Rewards program. This is a great way for customers to gain added value from their shopping experience, either by taking advantage of exclusive special offers from our retailers, or by being lucky enough to win an instant prize.

Remind us of how many people are employed at the Centre? Taking into account Big W and Woolworths, the centre has over 500 people who are employed in some capacity. We also make a point of engaging local contractors wherever possible and use local security providers, electricians, plumbers, and other tradespeople, thereby keeping money in the Armidale and New England economies.

The RADICAL ABDOMINOPLASTY OPERATION 'Tummy TUCK'

T

he gradual increase in girth in pregnancy and in weight gain, causes tissue-expansion and stretching.

When the above situation is reversed,ie. after delivery of a baby or weight loss, there are different types of reversal in the various tissues affected.

Muscles do best and can almost recover completely. The two large columns of muscles in the anterior abdominal wall, the right and left Rectus Abdominus muscles, which give great strength to the anterior abdominal wall as well as the back , are such examples.

The fascia covering these muscles, a strong sleeve around the muscles and fused ( attached ) in the midline, stretch up to a point before further stretch causes irreversible damage.

When the muscle recovers, the fascia does not and this results in a weak and stretched midline.

Instead of a fused midline keeping the muscles together, the central stretched ellipse of fascia causes the muscles to be separated, weakening the anterior abdominal wall as well as the back.

This� divarication or diastasis� of the muscles is equivalent to a midline hernia and causes significant weakening of the anterior abdominal wall, and protrusion of the abdominal contents, especially in the standing position.

The correction The radical abdominoplasty procedure described by Dr. Ivor Pitanguy, the doyen of Brazilian plasticsurgery, is an excellent operation which fixes this problem very well.

The surgery results in the re-

establishment of the central fascial fusion, with the muscles back together in the midline and with recovery of strength and contour.

A bonus of this operation is the removal of a good amount of skin and fat from the anterior abdominal wall.

The surgery is major, needing general anaesthesia and hospitalisation as well as time for recovery, but the excellent resolution of the problem makes it all worthwhile.

Recurrent abdominal wall hernias.

An extension of this technique is the use in the correction of recurrent abdominal wall hernias, resulting from multiple previous operations and attempted hernia repairs.

A very significant advantage of this type of repair is the avoidance of the use of synthetic mesh grafts with its many attendant problems.

FAREWELL MISS BROOKS Farewell to Miss Brooks, as she puts down the textbooks after 20 years as a loved teacher at Martins Gully Public School. We discuss some memorable moments from her long and productive career ...

H

ow long have you been at Martins Gully Public School?

This year marks 20 years as Assistant Principal here at Martins Gully. I was appointed in 1994 after four years as Assistant Principal at Guyra Central School, and five years in Deniliquin as a classroom teacher and relieving AP. Deniliquin was my first permanent teaching appointment after four years casual teaching on the Central Coast, where I grew up. Prior to my teacher training at Armidale CAE, I worked for the Commonwealth Public Service in Sydney, as well as spending three years on a working holiday in the UK and Europe.

In 2003 I relieved as Principal at Kellys Plains PS for two terms. I began my teaching career with Kindergarten and have taught in the K-2 area for almost all that time and am now finishing my career with Kindergarten once again.

How has the school changed in your time?

Martins Gully is still the same friendly, happy and rewarding place to teach, small in size but big in heart: a warm and welcoming school with supportive and involved parents, a wonderful group of students and talented, dedicated staff.

Changes during my time have included: technology, with Interactive Whiteboards instead of chalkboards in every classroom; the completion of the school hall (a project begun by parents); the addition of a fantastic new administration

This tree and its significance to the children each year in Kindergarten were even mentioned in a study made by the University of Western Sydney about children starting school. In 1999 I trained as the school’s first Reading Recovery teacher, and the school continues to provide this program to assist children with their reading development. There have been curriculum changes, particularly in the last year with the release of the new National Curriculum, with the English syllabus set for implementation in 2014. There have been some staff changes over the years, most noticeably in the Principal role, meaning that I have relieved in that position on numerous occasions – a job that I quite enjoyed thanks to the very supportive staff and parents, but I was always very keen to get back to the classroom! This year I am completing my very last year of teaching, and a teacher newly appointed to the school is enjoying her very first year.

What are your most memorable moments?

Every day is a memorable day, particularly with little ones, as their wonderment and curiosity make for many unexpected delights. There probably isn’t a day that has gone by without an interesting question or response that makes me

smile, and children’s attempts and successes with learning always fascinate and inspire me. In my first year of teaching, I remember a small boy’s insistence that when he grew up he wanted to be a giraffe, and nothing would dissuade him from this idea. So we wrote it down and he drew a wonderful picture of the said animal. I often wonder if he grew up to be tall! I remember taking my Kindergarten children to the Armidale Eisteddfod, where they performed a delightful percussion piece set to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic song, using fly swatters, picnic gear and teddy bears, with the children all wearing teddy bear heads.

What is in store for your retirement? Retirement presents as a new phase in my life and will be a time to pursue new things and catch up on all those things I may have put off doing. These will include more time with patchwork and quilting, travel in Australia and overseas, and time with family. I certainly plan on seeing more of this country as well as revisiting many of the places seen during that three year, round the world voyage I made many years ago. I am looking forward to simply having the time to think about all the different opportunities that will now be available.

I have had the pleasure of working closely with Meredith, not just as a talented class teacher but on the many occasions she so competently relieved as Principal. At all times her professionalism and dedication to her position was apparent, dealing with the many ‘interesting’ situations that present themselves when one is ‘in the chair’.

I could, at all times, rely on her knowledge of policy and procedure and be confident that all matters, whether it be in the areas of administration and staffing, or her contact with students and parents, would be dealt with efficiently and effectively. I will miss her knowledge and thank her for her never-ending support and friendship. I wish her and Keith good health and every happiness in a very well deserved retirement.

Any student, staff member or parent who has worked closely with Meredith would appreciate her total commitment and dedication to her students. Oscar Forman, chef at Prue & Olive believes simplicity is key when creating meals for customers at the Moore Street café.

I

nfluenced by chefs Phillip Johnson and Anthony Bourdain, Oscar agrees with Albert Einstein, who states: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler”. Oscar takes this mantra into his cooking, utilising local, fresh produce to make his delicious meals. Oscar the Magnificent, as he is regularly called by the staff at Prue & Olive, has a passion for good ingredients from which he then translates onto the plate. His popular dishes include his corn fritters, risottos and salads. The future holds many more years of cooking for Oscar, as he believes one of the best things about being a chef is that you never stop learning.

FOCUS finds out more about Oscar …

Tell us about your early life ... I was born in Armidale and have lived in and around Armidale all of my life. My father was a biodynamic farmer. Our first property was situated at Black Mountain, about half an hour north of Armidale, where my parents ran livestock and also grew beautiful biodynamic produce, which they sold in a small store that they ran in Armidale.

We later moved to a property west of Armidale and we continued to farm livestock and started an olive farm. We also sold biodynamic herbal teas. Most of my spare time was spent helping my parents and two brothers working the farm. I have wonderful memories of some of the beautiful fresh produce that we used to grow and the

amazing meals that my mother cooked for us.

What drew you to cooking? Growing up around such a wonderful fresh produce has been a big influence for me. When you are using fresh, ripe fruit and vegetables, you just end with such fantastic tasting food. I always use the highest standard of produce that I can source when preparing meals. Also, my family has had a major influence. All of my family are great cooks, and I remember wanting to be able to cook up great feasts like my uncles at family get-togethers. Food has always been a big part of Christmas for us, and we spend a lot of time cooking and eating. I find it a wonderfully inspiring thing ... people getting together and enjoying good company and just having a great time around a dinner table.

Food really brings people together.

Most memorable moment in a chef’s jacket? I would have to say that the most memorable moment was putting on my chef’s jacket on the first day as Head Chef running my own kitchen. It is great to have such a wonderful challenge as Head Chef. It made all the hard work of my apprenticeship worthwhile, as I had pushed myself hard, so it seemed like a real milestone. The whole time has just been wonderful though; I have met some great people and learnt many things throughout my career and am looking forward to learning more about food and meeting new challenges that come along the way.

e said to see the team get the recognition they deserve for what they’ve achieved makes him really proud and grateful to be their leader. “I enjoy every moment I spend with these guys. The support they have given me is second to none. Best team I have ever been a part of.”

Tell us about the store’s recent award? We recently received the Coles STORE TEAM OF THE YEAR award for NSW Zone 2 (That puts us as 1st out of 92 stores). The award is based on Community Involvement, Store Achievement and Team Work.

We have an internal ranking system and we moved from 725th ranked store in the nation to 152nd. We all

received pins to wear, extra discount in store, a celebration event for the team, and there is a big mural photo of the team coming soon.

Tell us about the team at Coles Armidale and what makes them so special? The team at Coles Armidale have a lot of retail experience behind them; some of the team have worked here for over 35 years (Carol Williams) with many others having 5 - 30 years’ experience. Being part of the team feels just like being part of a big family – a family that has lots of fun in and out of the workplace.

If you come into the store you will see smiling faces and familiar faces, and that’s what keeps customers coming back. We get to know you and your family and have fun doing so, which makes doing the shopping experience that little bit easier because you feel welcome and know that nothing is any hassle.

How does Coles contribute to our local community? We have a lot of fundraising through Coles as a company. Our major fundraiser for 2013/2014 is Redkite, a charity for children and young adults and their families who are dealing with cancer.

We have donated over $5million nationally and just over $9,000 from Coles Armidale. We also provide store tours for lots of school groups and provide donations to various groups throughout the year. We help with orders of food for community groups, and many small businesses use us as well.

We employ around 150 local people and have trained many others who have gone on to bigger and better things. Coles also has a program of giving any food that may not have sold in store (but is still good) to Secondbite – a community group providing meals to the less fortunate.

Plans for the future? Coles is 100 years old next April, so we will have to wait and see what that brings. In the near future we will soon have Coles Online and Coles Click and Collect. Online will be delivered to your door. Click and Collect is for others wishing to order online and pick up later from lockers located mainly at Shell Coles Express Service Stations (both of these options replace the old Home Delivery that we had for many years).

With around 30 produce stalls, educational workshops, live music and kids’ activities, the markets are an event appealing to the whole family in and around the beautiful setting of McHattan Park.

The markets provide an ideal meeting spot for visitors, where people can grab a coffee and their breakfast or lunch and wander the markets enjoying the ambience, stocking up on beautiful fresh and local produce and sampling the lovely flavours of our region.

Who heads up the Alligators club? Joe (President) and Lisa Russell (Carnival Secretary and Registrar) have been involved with the Club for about six years, and Alligators has been very fortunate to have Mike Hoult as Club Coach.

Something really important that has a great deal going for it here is primary industry. The very phrase underlines its importance. Not only our district but our civilisations have been based on recognition of the realities of primary industry. Sadly, our city cousins don’t often get it. I’ve lived and worked in cities here and internationally and on the whole, they just don’t get it.

Professor Iain Young is Head of the School of Environmental & Rural Science, and this school runs the full gamut from literally touching the earth to global high tech. It is arguably one of the most important institutions in this country.

As one of the earliest areas in Australia where European style agriculture took off, New England still has its boots firmly planted on the earth. As well as our successes, we have been learning a lot about our failures to adapt European methods to Australian realities.

UNE awards Bachelor, Diploma and Master degrees in Agriculture, but also Master of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor of Agriculture/Bachelor of Business, Graduate Certificates, Bachelor of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Bachelor of Agriculture/ Bachelor of Laws, Undergraduate Courses in Agriculture, Rural Science & Plant Science, Graduate Certificate in Precision Agriculture, Agricultural Systems, Agricultural Practice … and apparently there are six jobs to every one graduate. This group is researching exciting possibilities that come with the extraordinary leaps in knowledge of applied optics and previously undreamt of techniques of precision agriculture: these can lead to optimising production. UNE’s SMART Farm project is developing and applying processes spanning ‘grains, beef and sheep as well as intensive horticulture and viticulture systems’.

This is the real face of agriculture today, on which all of us – here and in the cities – depend. This is important, and this is happening here. The spin-offs for this district should be clear and we should stand together to get this message through and to look to collateral employment opportunities locally.

I wanted to talk about the importance of showcasing our pride and confidence in the work being done in our district – this includes the presentation of the City and the Central Mall in particular. We’re working in a new kind of partnership with the people we support, and with their families and carers to envision and create a personal, positive future. Our work is about listening to what a person wants right now and into the future and then working with them on how they want to make it happen.

We think of ourselves as coaches rather than supporters. We’re not here to cheer people on from the sidelines. We will do everything we can to enable the people we support to know what they want and to succeed in getting it. We won’t settle for anything less than a future that’s ideal for each individual.

With our services and businesses across NSW, QLD and the ACT, HWNS is one of Australia’s largest disability organisations. We’ve been in Armidale for nearly two years and now support more than 20 people across the New England region and more than 3,000 people overall.

What were your achievements for 2013? This year HWNS was pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with other local service providers and work in partnership. This benefited both the people we support and also the broader population of people with a disability.

In September, HWNS was a proud supporter of the ‘My Future, My Choice’ Expo held here in Armidale

and also the ‘Links for Life’ Expo in Tamworth.

We were also a major sponsor of the inaugural Ceremonial Butterfly Ball held on 16 November in celebration of International Day of People with Disability.

We have had a wonderful year and have supported many local individuals to work towards, pursue and achieve their goals and dreams.

Plans for 2014? In 2014 and beyond, HWNS will continue to prepare for the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is due in the New England region in 2016.

HWNS is the provider of choice for a number of local individuals and their families, and our self managed models are becoming increasingly popular. In 2014 we hope to support even more individuals to achieve a unique and positive future.

We can work with a person to build their skills, confidence and wellbeing in their everyday life. This may be creating a place to call home where we can assist the person to help them find and secure a place to live. We can also help out with everyday things such as cooking, shopping and paying bills.

We can provide support how and when each individual wants it: from just a little bit, to a lot, and in ways and times that make sense for them.

Fire up your imagination

Using trims in decorating Have you ever looked at curtains in old houses and admired the beautiful tassles, fringes and tiebacks they were decorated with? These trims are called Passementerie, and they have been a fascinating art form for many centuries. Making them requires imagination, patience and a wonderful assortment of little looms and tools. These traditional trims are still available, but are more of a specialist item these days.

Currently, trims are enjoying a revival ... well, more of an offshoot than a revival, because the trims have changed to suit modern decorating styles. Several of our fabric suppliers have come out with new trim books in the last few years which have a beautiful array of braids, tiebacks, ribbon trims, button trims, bobbles, shell trims, beads and the like to be used in any way your imagination can think up. We use a lot to add interest to lampshades, but they can be used as trim on

upholstery, in curtains or on blinds to give a beautiful finish to plain curtains or along the bottom of a blind. A contrast trim can lift a cushion to a different level of interest, framing the lovely fabric or adding a colourful finish.

Sanderson have come out with a collection that we are constantly ordering from, as have Harlequin. Designers Guild have been producing beautiful trims and tiebacks for a long time, and some of our American companies are now producing books of trims and braids that complement their fabric ranges. FIRST EVER Tour de Rocks BALL Tickets on sale now for the first ever Tour De Rocks Ball to be held Saturday, March 22. Organisers Lisa Sewell and Janine Ranck tell us more about this exciting FUNdraising event.

Tour de Rocks is having its first Ball as a FUN raiser in March. How did this come about?

The initial idea was Lisa’s. We love going to balls, and we were thinking of a fun event that Tour de Rocks hadn’t done before, so we thought we’d sell the idea to the committee and see what they thought. The idea was supported 100% as a way of having a really fun night out and engaging not only the TdR community, but anyone from the broader community looking for a fun night with the added benefit of helping TdR raise money for the prevention, education and research into cancer.

What can we expect on the night? A great night out. The Ex Services Memorial Club will provide a lovely 2 course meal. Music will be by local band Text Message, who really know how to get people out of their seats and dancing. As we are determined to make this a fun night for everyone, formalities will be kept to a minimum.

We will be conducting an auction during the night, with some great items being donated. In short, a meal and table drinks, a great band to dance to and good company to while away the evening.

What local businesses are helping with this event and how? This ball would not be happening without the amazing enthusiasm and contribution of the Ex Services Memorial Club and Scott Sullivan. Scott has been amazing and will be donating to the ball the amazing venue, drinks on arrival, a bottle of white and red wine and a jug of beer on each table, all table linen and chair covers.

The band, Text Message, will be playing at the Ball for free.

Jenny Allingham at Celebrations the Party Shop will be donating all the table decorations.

Johnson and Kennedy are donating the helium m for the balloons.

Moxon’s Bakery are donating a TdR cake to be served with tea and coffee.

The amazing team at FOCUS, and in particular Tracy and Tim, have done an amazing job giving TdR exposure through this wonderful community publication and awesome photographs.

By these amazing local businesses donating so much to the ball, we have been able to ensure that nearly three quarters of the cost of the ticket will be a direct donation to Tour de Rocks.

Of course with everything TdR, a large army is helping with every conceivable service or job needed to make this event a night to remember and an event to be looked forward to each year.

How can we get tickets? Tickets go on sale at the Ex Services Memorial Club from this week.

The cost of the tickets are $85 each. Tickets can be sold as a table of 10 or individually.

Any updates for Tour De Rocks 2013 we should know? 2013 has seen the development of a more formal approach to Tour de Rocks, with the development of a larger board and the formation of sub-committees. Of these sub-committees, the one which holds the most interest is the Appropriations Committee, who decide on the allocation of funds raised back into our community. This year this committee has been able to allocate funds to many and varied organisations to the tune of $250,000, with a majority of this going to projects and groups within our local community. An amazing achievement by everyone associated with Tour de Rocks 2013.

At the launch of Tour de Rocks 2014, the following allocation of funds was announced: ACCAF – Armidale Community Cancer Assistance Fund managed by the Social Worker at the Armidale Hospital. This fund gives immediate financial assistance to those with cancer who are in crisis.

Can Assist, Armidale Branch – this organisation provides financial support for cancer patients undergoing financial stress as a result of their cancer diagnosis.

Quilting Volunteer Group – this is a group of women who meet and produce quilted bags and quilts to give as a gift to those diagnosed with cancer. With this funding, their group can commence again in 2014.

Opera New England (ONE) presents Puccini’s La Boheme in Armidale, January 2014. Today we talk to George Torbay (Director), Bruce Menzies (Musical Director), and Rowena Cowley (Sydney Conservatorium of Music).

xplain your role with ONE? Rowena: I have a role in sourcing and casting the singers, consulting on their vocal welfare and preparing some singers for their

roles.

Bruce: I am conducting our four performances and support the musical preparation of the singers and orchestra.

George: My role is the director. Any show is a substantial undertaking, but trying to do a full opera in a week is wonderful madness. I love directing opera, because it is unashamedly grand, bold, heartbreaking and delicious all at once. After our last production, Marriage of Figaro, many people told me it was the first full opera they had ever seen. There is nothing better than that.

What is unique about ONE? Rowena: This is a high quality platform for young artists to sing mainstream repertoire with a skilled and artistic team. The singers prepare their roles independently, rehearse for a week, and then perform a fully staged work with orchestra. This is unique in opera in this country with no other regional company, to my knowledge, in Australia doing what ONE is able to do.

Bruce: The opportunity is for talented young singers from around Australia to perform in fully staged opera with an orchestra of professional/ semi-professional musicians before appreciative and full (we hope!) houses.

George: Providing a vehicle for young artists to sing important repertoire in a fully realised production is what ONE is all about. Learning how to build a role, be patient on stage, be an actor who listens – these are skills we can provide, and Armidale audiences are the beneficiaries.

What is most exciting about this production? Rowena: I can't wait to see these roles played by singers who are the ages of the characters they inhabit, in the lovely theatre at TAS. Bruce: The process is the exciting thing – seeing all the disparate elements come together from planning and auditioning through to performance.

George: With every show I have directed for Armidale audiences, I have tried to create something wonderful. This will be no different. I am excited for Armidale to hear these voices, in

Bruce: A jewel of an opera – one of the most popular ever written. Performed and produced well, it is absolutely heartrending.

George: The ultimate love story and the first opera I ever saw as a young music student. Perhaps a young person will see this production and it will ignite something lasting for them.

Any surprises you can tell us? Rowena: I'll leave this one to the director and designers!

Bruce: The set will be amazing!

George: Of course there are surprises! I am always trying something new. It could work brilliantly, or be a stunning failure. Either way, it makes for riveting theatre.

Do you have a favourite piece of music?

Rowena: As a soprano myself, I can't resist music sung by Mimi and Musetta. And the moment when Rudolfo turns to Mimi and finds her life is ended. It's iconic, because we are all afraid of that moment.

Bruce: I love all good music, but the music must make demands. It cannot just be wallpaper.

George: Mimi's aria to Rudolfo (Act one) is breathtaking. There is one particular moment … oh, you'll just have to see it to know what I mean.

When not involved in opera, I usually …

Rowena: Teach young opera singers, read, walk, swim, enjoy performance and painting (other people's!)

Bruce: Am seeing my patients in my General Practice.

George: Teach young musical theatre singers and direct shows. I adore my work.

Any final remarks? Rowena: Looking forward to seeing ONE establish itself with another joyful season after the very successful Marriage of Figaro in 2013.

Bruce: ONE works because of the team of nine amazing people with so much to give in different facets of the production.

George: I am excited and terrified about this production – don't miss this!

A YEAR IN RETROSPECT This year, like others before it, has been one of celebrating the success of others, especially those who face challenges every day just to do what most of us take for granted. In looking back over the year, it has been one that is full of growth and change, particularly in further developing our person centred practices in preparation for the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Consultation on change and investing in training for our employees have been two strategies that have been undertaken to demonstrate our appreciation and respect for the work our employees do every day. This approach is a significant contributor to Ascent winning the NSW Regional Business Awards and finalist in the State Business Awards for the category of Employer of Choice.

We have definitely received outstanding results from taking a whole-of-organisation approach to change which, to our dedicated employees, volunteers and families and carers I say a huge thank you for your feedback, support and tireless efforts in making a difference to the lives of people with a disability and people with a mental illness in their workplaces and homes.

Pathfinders helps to ensure the safety, emotional security and connectedness to community of New England North West’s children, young people and their families. This year marks Pathfinders’ 30 year anniversary of serving our community. CEO Alan Brennan talks about how the organisation got to where it is today …

W

hen and how did it all begin for Pathfinders?

Around thirty years ago, a committed group of concerned residents established the Armidale Youth Refuge to provide short-term crisis accommodation for homeless youth in the area. At the same time, a supported accommodation service for young people was being established in Glen Innes and Inverell, known as TIGYS. In 2009, after significant growth and expansion across the New England and North West regions, the organisation changed its name to Pathfinders. Today, the prevention and relief of homelessness remains a core objective of Pathfinders.

What services does Pathfinders currently provide?

Pathfinders is a not-for-profit community organisation delivering a broad range of quality support services to more than 3,000 vulnerable young people and families annually throughout the region. Pathfinders now provides family support, early intervention and child protection services. At our Armidale and Inverell residences, we provide full-time care for young people who are unable to live with their birth families. Our Family Referral Service

assists vulnerable families to access services which will assist them to nurture and protect children. In Glen Innes, Pathfinders operates the ‘Open Door’ youth drop-in centre, which provides many young people with support and, with the support of Coles and Woolworths, an evening meal. In Inverell, Pathfinders operates IFYSS, supporting families and young people and Pathways, a residential care home for young people. As well, we continue to provide refuge and supported accommodation services for homeless youth.

What have been some of the highlights for Pathfinders over the last 30 years? Our major highlight is being recognised as one of the region’s leading providers of community services to young people, children and families. Delivering quality outcomes for disadvantaged youth continues to be our major motivator and reward. This year, our young people have had their photography displayed in the NSW Parliament, completed a welding course and learnt how to do farm repairs and grow vegetables. Most importantly, many of them have continued to return to a residence they regard as home.

This year we welcomed former NSW Supreme Court Judge, the Honourable James Wood AO QC, as Pathfinders Patron. Mr Wood has been a household name in NSW for his role in the landmark investigation into the Child Protection System of NSW in 2008 and as Royal Commissioner for the Inquiry into Corruption within the NSW Police Service from 1994-1997. Mr Wood’s appointment was a pivotal moment for Pathfinders and reflects the growth in public support for our work.

Who is currently involved in Pathfinders? Pathfinders is governed by a dedicated volunteer board of directors, who have qualifications and experience in accounting, social work, business, youth work and law. Our current directors include Fiona Miron, Bawa Kuyini, Shane Jubb, Justin Harman and Rosemary Curtis, and we have recently welcomed Brenna Bamford, a manager with Forsyths Accountants in Armidale, to the board. Our dedicated staff are located throughout the region, providing a diverse range of qualifications, expertise and life experiences to assist and support our clients.

Pathfinders now employs around 100 staff and has offices located in the major towns throughout the New England and North West, including Tamworth, Inverell, Moree and Glen Innes. Pathfinders’ head office is located in Armidale. We employ and train local people and utilise many local services throughout the region.

How else is Pathfinders involved in the community? This year Pathfinders was a major sponsor of the ‘Toughen Up Challenge’ held in Inverell, which raised funds for the extension of the Inverell skate park. We also jointly sponsored the Armidale Business Chamber’s ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum prior to the Federal election. With the UNE, Pathfinders has been a partner in the Minimbah Project, assisting with ‘Sign Up Days’ across the region to help individuals register their birth and gain access to a birth certificate.

What are the plans moving forward? Whilst we are proud to reach our 30 year anniversary, Pathfinders is also aware that the demand for our services continues to increase. We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with other organisations to support our communities and resolve social problems.

At the moment, we are excited to be working on a multi-agency campaign for the development of our regional Working Farm Project based at Tilbuster Station. Situated near Armidale, Tilbuster Station was gifted to Pathfinders in 2010 by a generous private donor. This project will deliver a range of programs including agricultural and vocational training, accommodation and skills development for disengaged young people, youth and family support services and outdoor recreational programs.

This year Pathfinders received accreditation to provide foster care services, and our foster care program will commence operation in 2014. As a foster care agency, Pathfinders will recruit, train and supervise carers in their important work of caring for children in foster care.

In recent years Pathfinders has also had an international focus. With funding from AusAID, we partnered with another non-government organisation to build a disability assessment centre in Ghana. Next year, we hope to obtain funding to complete a security fence and extension to the building. As well, in 2014 we will partner with a local Armidale church to build and maintain school buildings in Vanuatu.

i, I’m Karyn Walls, the new manager of The Athlete’s Foot Armidale. I have worked in store since April 2010.

Alongside myself, we have a team of experienced, mature staff who are committed to finding the perfect fit for each and every customer.

i Dan. How long have you been in Armidale? I was raised in Uralla and went to school at De La Salle College. I moved away to attend university in Sydney and worked in agriculture in Papua New Guinea and the Riverina and Sydney with Australian Fertiliser Ltd.

In 1982, I moved back to Armidale to work with J Richardson and Co and to raise my young family in the country. In November 1983, J Richardson & Co was taken over, and four managers of hardware and agriculture bought those sections of the business. The local community supported us strongly, as they wished our venture to succeed. In 1985 we opened a branch in Walcha and in 1986, opened a branch in Guyra.

I have worked all my time in the agriculture section, but maintained a strong interest in the hardware.

How has business changed over the years?

Richardson’s has changed in many ways over the years.

It has always tried to be innovative, trying to meet customers’ needs and introducing new products and practices. For example, Richardson’s computerisation has driven many other changes throughout our business.

How has Richardson’s been involved in the community? We like to support, wherever we can, a wide range of community events and causes. Typical of this, we, along with Wattyl, have recently donated paint to PCYC, for their major refurbishment. A few years back we worked with Can Assist to raise money for the Jean Colvin home and to help local cancer sufferers with their expenses. Our policy is to try and support, as best we can, any community initiatives or fundraising. We consider this our best form of advertising.

Tell us about your field, the agriculture

department ... Richardson’s agriculture focuses on providing expert advice on pasture development. With over 30 years of experience working in the paddock with New England graziers, we have developed a range of solutions to help optimise farm production and farm profits.

Richardson’s agriculture signed up approx.

300 graziers to the ‘Prime Pastures Project’, in the ‘90s, which encouraged the adoption of a set of strict principles to be applied when direct drilling pastures. With our suppliers, we were the first to introduce herbs in pastures and selcote for correction of selenium

deficiencies. My son, David, who graduated from Queensland University, now manages the agriculture dept and will continue to manage the adoption of new technology.

Plans for the future? They revolve around keeping our business new and exciting for our traditional customer base but also to attract new customers to utilise our store. Armidale has a rapidly changing population, and we are making changes so that new residents will find our store different and our products and services attractive.

This spring, our new nursery is on display with a greater range of plants suited to our climate

and in healthy and fresh condition. Robyn, our nursery salesperson, is striving to have our nursery known as the best in town.

We are currently updating our kitchen/ bathroom display, and Sarah will work with our customers to help with the projects.

The quality of our Australian made flat pack kitchen is truly outstanding.

Early next year, we are looking at working with the Home Timber & Hardware group in a total relay of our store. This has not been done for 6 years, and it is in need of being refreshed with some changes and a better layout for our customers.

ROBYN Hi Robyn. What is upcoming for Christmas? The garden section is everchanging, and I like to keep it fresh. I’ve done a lot of work to get it to how it is today. There is a whole heap of new stuff arriving in the next few weeks in time for Christmas, whether you are looking for a gift or to get your garden looking its best before family arrives.

CHRIS Hi Chris. Tell us about your first day of employment at Richardson’s? When was it? Well, I cannot remember much of my first day with Richardson’s Hardware & Agriculture. It was so long ago: 29 years ago. I started out at the Bundarra Road Trade shed, where I was initially looking after the plumbing department. There was nothing significant about the day, as I remember. I knew all the staff and management and I was in my comfort zone, having worked with the majority of them previously at J Richardson & Co Ltd. My time at J Richardson & Co Ltd was predominantly working in the Trade Hardware division and in the latter part managing the Retail Hardware, so the transition was relatively seamless.

What is your role at Richardson’s? I have had many roles while being at Richardson’s. I was the Retail and Trade Business manager and have served some time on the board e, of directors. Today, I am currently serving in a mentoring role, assisting the company to develop our younger management team further and further.

CHRIS brad We have a great range of Wattyl and Solver paints available in store. We have interior and exterior paint, stains and varnishes for all applications. We also offer free colour matching, so come in store today for some advice for those painting jobs around the house.

CRIMINAL LAW It’s that time of year again ...’tis the season to be jolly. However, there is nothing jolly about being ‘pulled over’ by the police for being a drunk driver or suffering the consequences of getting into a fight after having had that one drink too many.

R

egrettably, the Christmas season is too often a peak time for road accidents, conflicts, and other problems caused by stress and alcohol, so it is worthwhile considering the risks of the season as well as its pleasures ... and how those risks can be reduced.

At this time of year, many people will be driving to their holiday destinations. The Christmas/New Year period is also when ‘double demerit’ points apply – this means if you are caught breaking the road rules, you will likely incur twice as many demerit points as you would otherwise – and for some offences (e.g. exceeding the speed limit by 45km or more), this is enough to lose your licence. If you incur more than 12 demerit points, your licence can be suspended by the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly known as the RTA).

Whilst it may be possible to go the Local Court within 28 days to appeal a suspension of your licence, it’s much better not to lose it in the first place and drive sensibly.

If you have a ‘P’ licence, you should not drink at all, if you are driving. The blood alcohol limit is zero. If you have an unrestricted driver’s licence, the limit is still .05. One can go to the Roads and Maritime Services website and find out how many drinks it takes before you reach that limit, however this is only a guide – not all drinks are standard and different people may reach the limit on fewer drinks, depending on their build, sex, etc.

The penalties for ‘drink driving’ can be severe – involving up to 2 years’ gaol, fine of $5,500 and disqualification from driving for up to 5 years. In most cases, if you’re ‘pulled over’ for drink driving, there is generally little option but

to plead guilty in court. It is simply not worth the risk. If you are going to drink, it is best not to drive at all.

If you go to a pub or a party, please remember that being drunk is not an accepted or acceptable excuse for bad behaviour. You are still expected to take responsibility for your actions and being affected by alcohol at the time of committing any criminal offence does not qualify as a defence, even if you don’t remember anything that happened, the next day.

No matter how irritating and insulting people can be at parties and in pubs, provocation is also not a defence. Provocation may be taken into account by the court as a mitigating factor when considering a penalty for certain offences, such as assault.

Insanity or self-defence is sometimes relied on, to defend a criminal charge. However, this is what is known as an ‘affirmative defence’ – which means it must be proven to the court, as everyone is presumed to be sane, unless proven otherwise. However, unlike guilt (which must be proven beyond reasonable doubt, by the prosecution), this only needs to be proven to the civil stand, the ‘balance of probabilities” (that is, more likely than not, to be true).

If you get into any kind of trouble over the Christmas/New Year break, it is best to get advice from a lawyer, who will be able to explain your options and likely range of penalties, as well as what steps you should take. However, the very best advice is to enjoy the season but be mindful and sensible of the potential consequences of your acts.

Merry from FOCUS shares her experience of the evening of the Butterfly Ball ... hat was the Don't DIS MyAbility Butterfly Ball? The Don’t DIS MyAbility Butterfly Ball was hosted by The Armidale Dumaresq Council Recreation Access Project to celebrate International Day Of People with Disability. Don’t DIS MyAbility continues to support the aims of the NSW Government’s Strong Together funding by raising community awareness of the needs of people with disability and their ability to make life choices relating not only to their care, but their career aspirations, relationships and social activities. The ball was an all ages and all inclusive formal ball that acknowledged and promoted an individual’s right to belong to their local community, to enjoy equal privileges and opportunities.

How did you become involved? I had been working with Suzanne Bannon from the Recreation Access Project this year on a few different events in regards to disabilities, and we began talking about the ball in early September.

Suzanne invited me along to the dancing lessons at the PCYC on a Thursday and Friday afternoon to help teach the debutantes to develop skills in social etiquette, presentation and dance. After my first lesson, I had so much fun meeting all of the debutantes, but seeing their enthusiasm, joy and interaction with each other at each lesson was what won me over. So I continued to go to the lessons where I could, and I filled in for missing partners here and there over the weeks. It wasn’t until the Thursday before the ball that I arrived to practice, and Joshua Smith greeted me with, “Hello partner” ... and I happily agreed to be his partner for his Debutante Ball.

How did the night go? The night was fantastic.

The girls started off at Kent House getting their makeup done by Skin & Tonic and the hair by Foxy Locks in Armidale early in the afternoon.

The boys arrived dressed and ready to go at 4pm. We arrived in style, with the members of the Classic and Specialist Car Club offering their time and vehicles to take each couple to the Ex Services Club.

We were individually introduced to the audience,

followed by the dance. Steve Widders presented the Welcome to Country, with Adam Marshall speaking for the official opening.

After this everyone danced all night to the band Shake Rattle & Roll. It was a fabulous night, and I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun. It was great to see families, friends and the Armidale community come together for such an event. I can only hope that this becomes an annual event.
