“Community generosity was again evident when the 2014 Tour de Rocks ride was successfully launched at the TAS Hoskins Centre."

2014 Tour de Rocks his year the TdR committee have a number of initiatives building on the work done previously to make the event as effective as possible, as we continue to raise funds for cancer research, awareness and prevention.

Riders and supporters from previous years caught up, relived stories from the ride and shared the experiences, the challenge and satisfaction of participating successfully but also making a significant contribution to their community. Those that attended with the thought of being involved this year were certainly motivated by the stories, with many registrations on the night.

The foyer of the Hoskins centre looked like bike central, with the Armidale Bicycle Centre Giant tent and bikes, the Professionals TdR merchandise tent that was well patronised, with many items available – including the just released 2013 book of memories by Sue Byrnes, our new Tri-tech water bottles, T-shirts and displays from previous years' rides. The TdR catering team again excelled, with healthy canapés and drinks on offer. All this was being captured by the very professional Trish Stephens and

her team from the Armidale TAFE, as they commenced a documentary on the story of the TdR. Hugh Piper and Kathie Marquardt (Chair d of Appropriation Committee) provided an overview of how the $250,000 raised located to on the previous ride is being allocated d awareness regional cancer assistance and programs in addition to national cancer research programs.

With a significantly earlier launch to the 2014 ride than usual, we have created an opportunity to inspire our communities to take control of their health, to be fit healthy and happy. Of the 7 most common cancers, we know the incidence of these diseases can be substantially reduced simply by maintaining a healthy weight and participating in a moderate exercise program. The TdR Awareness and Education Committee have developed a program in conjunction with Sport UNE, Mick and Cols Fitness Centre and Bullens Bicycle Centre that includes a number of classes at the Sport UNE gym and training rides for all levels with Mark Bullen. This is a

g great opportunity to build up your level of fitness and feel great for summer and the Christmas season.

The three facilitators guided 18 participants through three days of sessions aimed at improving quality of life through nutrition, mindfulness, meditation, control, humour, love, exercise, yoga, support and above all peace.

Many people were needed to make this event happen, but no more than the people of our local communities who gave so generously over the past 12 months, enabling Tour de Rocks to raise a significant amount of funds – which are now being distributed amongst those who need it the most.

Shirley & David Allingham

After 50 years, Shirley and David Allingham are still as in love as when they first began, and David made it clear by proposing to Shirley for a second time ...

i Georgina. Tell us why your grandparents are still lovebirds? My grandparents, Shirley and David Allingham, both grew up here in Armidale. They moved to Sydney for 5 years in 1977, but came back to Armidale and have lived here ever since.

They currently live between their home in Armidale and spend as much time as they can at their property outside of Uralla.

They first met through a mutual friend, who set them up on their first date a few days later. As David was driving in the Armidale Car Club back then, he asked Shirley to go with him on a car trial and navigate for him; this was their very first date. And although the first time didn’t stick, 8 years later David decided to start 'courting' Shirley again, nine months passed, and he popped the question. On 19 November 1962 they were married at TAS Chapel here in Armidale.

They now have 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, along with many cousins and extended family. Most of the immediate family lives here in Armidale, but some in Bundaberg, Newcastle and Tamworth. David worked in the family business, 'Allingham Removals', until Shirley and his two sons took over around 20 years ago now. David still works in the office over there, helping the boys as much as he can.

W

hat is the play Armidale – Our Town about? Armidale – Our Town is a play celebrating Armidale with all its drama and comedy of life. Chris Cunningham wrote the following synopsis, which sums up the play perfectly: “Armidale – Our Town takes an ironic and mostly humorous view of the emergence of Armidale from the ancient realms of Tuembandian, through the trials and tribulations of the European pioneers, to the modern regional city we all know and love.

“The scene opens on the timeless landscape before European settlement. In quick succession we encounter the difficulties of seaboard life for the boat people, the trials of ascending to the tablelands, and the efforts of English officialdom to tame this seemingly wild landscape. We see the first beginnings of the town – a very rough place, and very hard to administer. By 1863 the town is sufficiently civilized to assume the responsibilities of municipal government.

“The second act opens with the arrival of the railway in 1883. This marked the turning point for the civilising of modern Armidale.

Who has been involved in making this happen? The idea of the play started when local historian Ian Johnstone handed me a list of 100 'snapshots', which he had compiled about the history of Armidale.

I carried these 'snapshots' around with me for years, both in my bag and in my head, mulling over the possibilities of shaping them into a kind of 'Armidalean pageant'. They were my constant travelling companions as I tracked my way by train between Armidale and Sydney, by bus between Armidale and Brisbane and even once by plane between Armidale and Budapest (my birthplace).

No clear plan had formed in my mind until

The rest, as they say, is history.

Jan Wyles (the narrator in the play) and I held two drama workshops, inviting people to share ideas about a play which told the story

of Armidale. These were lively and fruitful discussions.

Then the Armidale Dumaresq Civic Precinct committee headed by Judith Ross-Smith took the project on as its major fundraiser for 2013.

Meanwhile, Chris Cunningham and Bob Thompson were writing songs and rehearsing with an enthusiastic group of local musicians, including brass players from the Armidale City Band. Our conductor is Benjamin Thorn, who will also play a number of instruments.

A cast of 14 players, including Anaiwan elder Steve Widders – plus three children and an eager dog (thus disregarding all warnings about 'not working with children and animals' in the theatre) create this historical and dramatic tapestry. They are supported by a talented team of designers and technical people.

When are the performances? At the Town Hall, Friday to Sunday 22 - 24 November.

H

ow long have you lived in Armidale? I first visited Armidale as an undergraduate at UNE and fell in love with the place. I moved here from Sydney a year or so later – nearly thirty years ago now. Both my children were born and have grown up here.

What do you do for a living? Being a single mum for 17 years has limited my ability to work full-time. Presently, I work part-time for Northern Links Incorporated, in tenant support and training. Northern Links assists social housing tenants in the northern half of the state, many of whom are carers for people with disability.

It is easy to forget that for most families a diagnosis of disability is a free ticket to poverty.

Simultaneously, your paid work capacity is limited, while medical and other expenses increase.

What introduced you to the world of disability? My son, Edward, was diagnosed with severe Autism when he was three. Until that time, I had not even heard the word Autism. Our family was suddenly on an unexpected journey with a very steep learning curve. Life as the parent of a person, of any age, with disability is hard.

It’s ‘extreme parenting’ – you are placed in situations you never dreamed of, dealing with professionals you never heard of, you meet the diamonds and the dregs of people whose paid work is to support your child, and you grieve deeply for the injuries and indignities your precious and beloved person suffers in the world ... a world which cares more for them than about them, which wants to hold them 8 new england focus.

apart – at an emotional and often physical distance and sometimes tries, pityingly, to treat them as children in adult bodies.

Edward is a ‘linguistic minority of one’, so alternative communication is a big part of our lives. It’s become a passion of mine – ‘everyone can communicate’; we just have to listen with heart and value what they say.

Edward attends the Day Services at The Ascent Group and has been there for four years.

What is the hardest thing about parenting a child with a disability? The constancy of caring is the hardest – and when people ‘do the goldfish’ (that open mouthed, wide-eyed, unwavering stare) at someone who looks, sounds or behaves differently to the norm, it’s just so hurtful.

What books are on your bedside table right now? The top three on the pile are There’s a Boy in There, Sean and Mary Barron; The Brain that Changes Itself, Norman Doidge; and Murder & Mendelssohn, by Kerry Greenwood.

She doesn’t know it, but Kerry Greenwood has provided me with hours of ‘paperback respite’ from the twilight zone I occupy between ‘the ordinary world’ and ‘the Autism world’.

If you were a crayon, what colour would you be? Electric blue – it’s the colour of creative transformation and new ideas.

Any thoughts on current disability services? There is a lot happening at the moment. Disability care is an exciting initiative, but still a work in progress.

Another big thing is that we are finally beginning to catch up with the rest of the world by applying person-centred philosophy and practise in disability services.

Person centredness places the person receiving the service and their family at the centre of all decision making about their life and future. It recognises that people with disabilities are unique, valuable individuals who have dreams and wishes – just like everyone – and that those dreams and wishes are intrinsic to their health and wellbeing.

It is a marked change from traditional disability service provision.

I love art, music and drama and see these as ideal ways of improving the quality of life for people with disability and a way of including them as valued members of our Armidale community.

Person centredness states that people with disabilities, with tailored and adequate support, are capable of decision making and achievements that they and their families have previously only dreamed of and that they have never been able to attempt within the restrictions of a ‘service-centred’ system, such as currently operates in NSW.

The Ascent Group has trained four Person Centred Champions, and I am proud to be one of them, the parent volunteer. We are tasked with introducing person centred approaches into the service provision of The Ascent Group. This is, and must be a gradual and detailed process.

No organisation, or person, can become person centred overnight, although some try to persuade you that they have.

The Ascent Group realises that true person centredness takes time and commitment and is creating solid transformation through education and training of staff, parents and the community. The Ascent Group is anchored in the local Armidale community; it is not some corporate giant intent upon wresting money back to an interstate or international head office and shareholders.

A vision for the future? That we all live by the truth that ‘different is not less’.

unters and Collectors are the headline act. Tell us a little about them? ‘Hunnas’ are one of the great acts to emerge out of the Australian inner-city pub scene in the ‘80s, who went on to play over 2,000 shows from pubs to arenas, sell over a million albums and produce dozens of classic songs.

They are often quoted as having been an inspiration to many aspiring musicians over the last 25 years. I have never forgotten the first time I saw them play in 1981 – way back then they really had that unique sound that became their trademark. They toured relentlessly around Australia and had a reputation as a live band that few bands matched. From the time Hunters announced that they would be playing again, we were inundated with requests from so many bands wanting to play with them at the concerts this time around. They are truly one the most dynamic and powerful live bands in Australian music history.

Who else will be performing on the day? A big part of the reason why Hunters decided to play together again is because of the tribute album released in late September, called Crucible. Artists like Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, The Living End, Neil Finn and Birds Of Tokyo have recorded their own versions of different Hunters songs. It’s a fantastic record and with that out there, it made sense to the band to reform. Two of the bands on the album, Something For Kate and British India, will be playing at the show. We’ve also got the amazing Diesel, who is just incredible live and has a swag of hits that ADOTG audiences love.

Open Gardens 2013 Three very memorable gardens will open in Armidale on November 9 and 10 to raise funds for the development of the rose garden at Saumarez, the local National Trust homestead and also for the Red Cross, a charity strongly supported by First National.

F

irst National Foundation has joined forces with Red Cross to educate and encourage individuals, households and communities to consider how they can prepare themselves for a disaster or emergency.

Two of the gardens, Eynsford and Yarrobindi II, opened recently for the Australian Garden History National Conference and are outstanding examples of exemplary historic gardens.

The gracious two storey residence, Eynsford, at 109 Jeffrey St, was built in 1927 of Armidale blue brick combined with a distinctive mock Tudor timber and stucco and designed by prominent local architect Robert Hickson.

Photographs of the house in the 1930s show the magnificent holly oak already well established, with other mature trees in the background, indicating that these were present before the house was built. The variegated English Elm, Ulmus procera Variegata, Gingko biloba, and Cupressus torulosa, in the Eynsford garden today are thought to all pre-date the house.

Eynsford is clearly a garden which has always been loved and tended, especially by its current owners Brian Thomas and Scott Carter.

They have contributed a potager, over 40 azaleas, 80 roses, 50 camellias, peonies and several pieces of sculpture, and the garden continues to go from strength to strength under their care.

At nearby 54 Faulkner St, Yarrobindi II flourishes. This elegant 1914 home in central Armidale is built of local blue brick and has been sensitively restored to original condition.

It had endured a chequered history with multiple owners. When John and Ann Maurer realised its charm and potential in 1991, they embarked on a major renovation project of both the house and garden.

Although the garden was wild with privet,

ivy and sprawling black laurel when the Maurers arrived, it also had the advantage of robust, established trees. Poplars, box elder and two magnificent desert ash provided the framework for a new garden with generous borders of shade loving hellebores, hydrangeas, woodland geraniums and camellias.

Wherever sunlight is available, roses are the plants of choice, while miniature box hedges, potted topiary and well groomed lawns echo the style of an Edwardian garden.

The third garden is the specialist rose garden which is owned by Catherine MacLean. On entering the small block in Donnelly St, it is clear to see how this garden could be the source of the roses which are steadily filling the new rose garden at Saumarez. Some eight hundred roses have been collected of the many different family members to make each collection as complete as possible.

These include the Albas, Gallicas, Damasks, Centifolias, Chinas, Hybrid Perpetuals and other members right through to the modern Hybrid Tea. The garden overflows with vigorous, colourful specimens tucked into beds of every size and shape, designed to maximise space for these beauties. The urge to explore and discover is irresistible, as each rose is different and has its own particular properties which endear it to the admirer. When asked which is her favourite rose, Catherine says, “‘Celeste’ is beautiful and so is ‘Madame Hardy’ and ‘Madame Zirkler’ and of course, ‘Peace’ is in a class of its own. If anyone can find anything more beautiful, then they can argue the challenge with me.”

This challenge should not be ignored.

The gardens are open on both days, November 9 and 10 from 10am until 4.30pm, with refreshments provided by the local branch of First National. Entry is $6 per garden or $15 for the three. For more information, contact your local Visitor Information Centre.

Cathe ne MacLean A rose by any other name

Catherine MacLean’s gardening genes were called into play very early in her life. At age three, her first memory of gardening was of being given a packet of nasturtium seeds and a pie dish by an elderly aunt, to whom she became a devoted gardening companion. A lifetime of gardening followed.

lthough Catherine’s family was originally from Inverell (the H MacLean Memorial Hospital is named after one of her great uncles) she was born and raised in Sydney, where she gardened until she left for Armidale in her mid twenties.

While at university in Sydney, she became a steward in the horticultural section of the Royal Easter Show, where she became fascinated by blooms of every kind and learned the tricks of the exhibitors in presenting their blooms in their best light. While teaching at Ascham and Kambala in her early twenties, she continued to garden, before being appointed Head Mistress, the youngest ever, of PLC, Armidale.

The garden she bought had a few Hybrid Tea Roses in it, but it wasn’t until she retired from the shop that she started gardening seriously again.

Catherine says, “A friend brought me a rugosa, and that’s when it started. I became aware that there were roses other than Hybrid Teas. Then Rumseys Rose Nursery in Sydney, which was actually closing, sent me a ‘mystery box’ of roses that they thought I might be interested in, and so my fascination began.”

Over the years she has continued to build her collections of roses, and her garden today is an amazing mix of all the members of the rose family.

Clive Logan and Angela Sole 2014 is ramping up to be a big year at NEGS, with major developments in the wind aimed at cementing the long-term future of the whole school. One internal key initiative to be introduced is the Wellbeing Program, a philosophy which will be implemented across the junior and senior school.

D

riven by Principal Clive Logan and managed by Wellbeing Coordinator Angela Sole, this will make NEGS one of about 50 government and independent schools across Australia to have adopted positive education since 2008. Other NSW schools that have jumped on board include Loreto Kirribilli, St Catherine's at Waverley and Knox Grammar in Sydney.

Angela, you are responsible for coordinating the program for next year, looking at what is working well already, and incorporating the most up-to-date information and research around. What does the program involve? Positive education is a strand of positive psychology, which aims to proactively increase mental resilience and wellbeing for all students and staff.

Our Wellbeing Program builds on strong research by internationally esteemed psychologist Martin Seligman. He believes that the high prevalence of depression among young people, the small rise in life satisfaction, and the synergy between learning and positive emotion all argue that the skills for happiness should be taught in school.

There is substantial evidence from well controlled studies that skills that increase resilience, positive emotion, engagement and meaning can be taught to schoolchildren.

Our program promotes optimism by teaching students to think more realistically and flexibly about the problems they encounter. Our course comprises teaching assertiveness, creative brainstorming, decision-making, relaxation, and 14 new england focus.

Why has NEGS implemented the Wellbeing Course? Principal Clive Logan has a long-held interest in the wellbeing of his students and has invested significant time in researching the benefits of similar programs in other private schools. His research has led him to believe that investing in the mental health of students can lead to improvements in social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes.

Mr Logan is now keen to integrate this research, believing that helping students to flourish now will also give them the resilience to fall back on when they encounter adversity in the future. In a world where students are confronted with issues from social media, magazines and advertising, it is important that NEGS takes the initiative and has in place structures to cope with and respond to issues that emerge.

The key is to be proactive rather than reactive, and so we believe our course will be of benefit, not only to the students, but also to teachers and parents. The premise is simple; if every person (student, teacher, parent) has wellbeing, then everything else will flourish as a result.

The Wellbeing Course@NEGS Wellbeing at NEGS will comprise of 6 strands whereby every lesson, session, workshop or talk in some way contributes to one or more of these 6 aspects of what we believe wellbeing to be: 1. Physical Health: this covers information on the foundations of wellbeing: keeping ourselves physically healthy.

2. Positive Relationships: this aspect of the course explores what is arguably the most

important aspect of wellbeing, namely our relationships with other people.

3. Perspective: this part of the course is concerned with building a 'psychological immune system', or grit and resilience. It aims to help develop the thinking skills that enable us to overcome adversity.

hat is your background; are you originally from Armidale? My mother, father, grandmothers and grandfathers were all Armidalians, so after living here for 78 years I should qualify too. Not all of the Hardman clan were/are interested in motor vehicles. Note the 1907 photo of the bakery and produce store; the building is now trading as the pump shop.

I was educated at BenVenue Primary School and the Armidale High School and left in December 1950 without the intermediate certificate to start work at my father’s garage at 121 Beardy St. 1968 saw the business move to new premises, the old movie theatre next door (now Waynes World). Then I planned and built the present complex, 101 Marsh St, in 1986, furthering my education in numerous auto fields.

I eventually retired after 60 enjoyable years involved with many and varied motor franchises, amongst them Vauxhall, Bedford, Oldsmobile Buick, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Holden, Chrysler, Valiant, Hillman, Humber, Dodge, Commer, Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Nissan and Honda, David Brown and Field Marshall tractors, B.S.A., Norton, James, Panther, Triumph and Sunbeam motorcycles.

hat do you think motivates people to exercise? If you asked our members what motivates them to exercise, you’re likely to get as many answers as there are members. Whether it’s training for sport, medical reasons, a special event, or the social aspect of getting out with a group of people and working towards a common goal, I think that we all enjoy feeling and looking good.

As it warms up, we generally become more active and start thinking about summer holidays. There’s nothing like pulling on your togs to remind you that this was the year you were going to be in better shape!

What motives you to exercise? For me, it’s a mix of all of these things. Most of us aren’t nearly as active as we’d like to be. We understand how important it is to exercise, but it’s easy to say, “I’m too busy, work’s hectic, I’m too tired, I’ll start tomorrow ...” This year though, along with some of my work mates, I’ve taken the plunge and committed to the

Coffs Harbour Team Triathlon in March. There’s still a while to go, but the mix of not letting others down, helping raise funds for a worthy cause, training with friends and a sense of personal achievement have all helped to push me along.

A number of our members and staff regularly participate in some wonderful charity events, such as the military style extreme events, mountain bike challenges, ocean swims, Tour de Rocks and the Armidale Fun Run on November 3. SportUNE is currently running an eight-week fitness program for Tour de Rocks participants, with more programs scheduled for early 2014. Bootcamp, also at SportUNE, is another great way to train for these events and get into shape.

What can you expect from regular exercise? There’s no doubt that regular exercise improves your quality of life. Talk with your friends who regularly workout, and it’s likely they’ll tell you how much more energetic they feel and how a good workout eliminates

the remnants of a stressful day and clears the mind. Research strongly supports these comments and shows that after only four weeks your body starts changing, and you’ll notice significant improvements in your mental wellbeing.

When is a good time to get started? It’s an old cliché, but there’s no better time than now!

It can be daunting if you’re new to exercise or it’s been a while. Our members who start out tentatively quickly feel very much at home with the support of our staff and their peers.

More men die from prostate cancer in Australia than women die from breast cancer. There are approximately 3,300 deaths from prostate cancer annually.

THE RISK FACTORS Age is the number 1 risk factor, with the rate of prostate cancer rising from 1 in 1,000 for men in their 40s to 80 in 1,000 for men in their 70s. There is a family link, with the risk nearly doubling if a close family member (father or brother) has developed prostate cancer. There is a 21% increase in deaths for men with prostate cancer in RURAL regions of Australia than in

Armidale Central Rotary Club is making significant progress on its ambitious programs for 2013/14. Under the leadership of President Lynda Lynch, the club has set priorities for the year which include expanding its community outreach, increasing its involvement with young people, building a new facility for the receipt and management of books for the annual book fair, undertaking a hands-on overseas project and expanding membership. The club continues to make contributions to the local, national and overseas communities through direct donations, physical support and provision of resources.

Two important new programs include the establishment of a Disabled Student Foundation and a leadership training and stimulation program, Leadership Circles, for young employees. These will have a considerable positive impact on Armidale. Planning is well underway for a new facility to process the receipt of donated books for the annual Book

Fair. The Book Fair is Armidale Central’s major fundraiser and an annual community event of significance for the region.

The School of St Jude in Tanzania was established and continues with support from Armidale Central, and the Ekuthuleni Primary School in South Africa has been directly supported by the club. In recent weeks significant donations have been made to music therapy programs at the New England Conservatorium of Music and for the purchase of resources for the Armidale Cardiac Rehabilitation program organised at Armidale Hospital by Medicare Local.

Leanne Betterrige tells FOCUS about her communication tactics.

1. Get someone’s attention before you start talking to them. This can usually be achieved by simply saying the person’s name, waiting for them to look at us, before we start talking. Remember, we can only concentrate on one thing at a time.

2. Move closer to the person so your voice does not drop in volume due to the distance your voice has to travel i.e. across the room or even backyard.

3. Make sure they can see your face; a lot of speech information can be obtained by watching facial cues. Most people think they can’t read lips, but some lip cues are obvious even though their sound may be soft.

4. Don’t talk too fast. We run our words and sounds together, and it is much harder to follow.

5. Don’t shout. If you see a hearing aid, the worst thing you can do is shout, because your voice becomes distorted. It also makes you seem cranky!

6. Reduce background noise where possible.

Mute the TV, turn off the music, vacuum cleaner, or running water, and don’t bang the saucepans, while trying to have a conversation. All background noise increases listening effort to tune it out, and some noise will drown your voice out completely!

7. Don’t talk through walls! The sound will be muffled and distorted, if it makes it through to the listener at all.

8. Be patient. Good communication is achieved when you take the time to make sure that people can participate in the conversation. If you are patient and respectful, people can ask clarifying questions when they miss a detail.

9. Rephrase or clarify what you said. Giving a clue to the topic or relating it to something more familiar.

10. Speak in a natural, clear voice. It’s easier to understand.

As an Audiologist, I am always telling clients to use Good Listening Tactics. I do not always get a chance to talk to their family and friends about Good Communication Tactics.

When we are having a conversation, particularly if we think the listener may have difficulty hearing, it is essential that we adopt good habits.

till going strong, Packsaddle’s annual exhibition, this one its 27th, will be held at the New England Regional Art Museum, Armidale from 25 October 'til 10 November.

The exhibition comprises a diverse range of paintings, limited edition prints and sculptures from well-known Australian artists, hung alongside young and emerging artists, with works contributed by major Sydney galleries, as well as individual artists.

The 2013 Packsaddle exhibition will be opened by wellknown artist Wendy Sharpe at 6pm (early viewing at 5pm) every day during NERAM opening hours until Sunday 10 November.

Visitors are invited to an informal celebration at the close of the exhibition on Sunday afternoon 10 November for wine and nibbles, the draw of the art raffle and for the collection of artworks.

All proceeds from the 2013 exhibition will go to The Yellow Room Appeal – a fundraising project to acquire Margaret Olley’s largest work – the Yellow Room triptych.

NERAM comes alive this month with a flourish, with all new exhibitions across the gallery and a special focus on Australian botanical art.

T

he exhibition Capturing Flora: 300 Years of Australian Botanical Art will take visitors on an historical journey, showing how Australia’s extraordinary and diverse flora has been recorded, interpreted and popularised by botanical artists from the early explorers to today. Toured by the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Capturing Flora is the most comprehensive exhibition of Australian botanical art ever held in Australia.

With over 350 drawings and prints in the exhibition, works have been divided into an historic timeline, beginning with the first encounters of European explorers in Australia. These include rare 18th century prints of plants that buccaneer William Dampier found on his visit to the Kimberleys in 1699 and images from Cook's exploration of the east coast of the continent.

The increasing popularity of Australian plants in both Australian and European gardens is also covered, along with an examination of the revival of Australian botanical art that occurred after WWII

with the development of the careers of Margaret Stones and Celia Rosser, and a selection of contemporary work by some of the best of botanic artists in Australia today, including Jenny Phillips, Anita Barley and Mali Moir.

A particular feature of the exhibition will be a focus on women artists, both amateur and professional, who have made very significant contributions to the recording and popularisation of Australian plants. Some, like Louisa Meredith and Ellis Rowan have been celebrated for their work, while others like Eliza Blyth and Fannie de Mole are still relatively obscure.

Continuing the botanical theme, Robert Cobcroft’s solo exhibition, Echoes in the Hedgerow, takes a different stance, examining how the pioneers of the New England area brought with them the notion of planting out 'New England' as a replica of the English countryside. This series of landscapes explores the effect created by combining the Australian bush with more than 150 years of planting English trees. Cobcroft’s imagery is trans-

lated as a nostalgic, homogenous binding of nineteenth century ideas together with modern photo technology.

Together, these exhibitions provide an opportunity to consider how Australians have both shaped and responded to their botanical environment and presented their flora to the world.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Local Government in Armidale and the ADC has quite a programme to mark the celebrations. It includes Barbara Albury’s play ‘Armidale: Our Town’ as one of the special events.

D

o watch for it from November 22 24 as this kind of celebration stays in the mind long after the event. I’ll never forget seeing Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore in the Armidale Town Hall – the first such performance I’d ever seen.

The University of New England is also celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the New England University College here in Armidale, which as we know led to the institution which is so threaded through our lives today.

There have been various celebrations and UNE’s contribution to sport in the community has been marked by the first class facilities it has gained today and where a weekend demonstrated how much sport has been integral to the health and wellbeing of so many.

A UNE Armidale Alumni Fundraising Dinner in September to mark the 75th anniversary was fun. Although not an Alumna, I do have two graduate children and have been kindly welcomed as a Friend. I’m always inspired by the ‘What Makes Me Tick’ theme that Professor Greg Horsley has used at various times.

Wonderful to hear such inspiring and happy graduates telling of their successes and their genuine gratitude for their time spent with UNE. A Cocktail Party at Boolimimbah on October 25 is where I’ll be raising a glass of general appreciation to those who had the foresight to work to bring Higher Education to Armidale.

And a Dinner Dance will be travelling back in time to 1938 with the music of Glen Miller and the Andrews Sisters filling the Wright Centre the next day.

The Ex-Services Memorial Club – ‘Servies’ – is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee, 60 years this year. Servies has played a big part in the life of Armidale in many ways and looks to be on the path to add to its achievements in the community in the coming years.

Thirty years of community achievement is what the Armidale Tree Group is celebrating this year. Begun in 1983 as a response to dieback across New England, the Group has ‘gone from

strength to strength’ and is proud to be celebrating this year. Another 30th birthday belongs to the New England Regional Art Museum.

Built in 1983 to house the gift of the Howard Hinton collection, funding was raised by dedicated supporters in the regional community and was matched by grants from the NSW Government. NERAM has the Armidale Big Birthday Bash as its contribution to Armidale’s big year, ‘themed around principles of sustainability, care for the environment and creativity’ and joining forces with Southern NE Landcare and the Armidale Tree Group to celebrate. The Armidale City Band has put its oompah into the mix.

And, oh dear, nearly left out the long weekend of celebrations for 120 years of Rugby Union in Armidale! Those who attended in perfect weather certainly won’t forget.

Inevitably there are other anniversaries that I’ve left out but that’s a pretty eclectic mix I think, and demonstrates the reasons to enjoy living in Armidale. Always check around for exact details of what’s on.

Earlier NECOM brought us together in a packed house to listen to ACO2 – the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s ‘precocious little sister’. I have to say how I was absolutely energised by hearing this wonderful group.

I’m looking forward to ‘Rainbow Ridge Songlines’ at the Showground Main Pavilion. I will have seen it before this column is printed but it promises the same energising from the Beyond Empathy project ACCESS ALL AREAS, which gave us the memorable ‘Silver City Songlines’ in 2012.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s report of Deloitte Access Economics’s forecast for NSW energised me too. ‘Five key sectors – tourism, international education, wealth management, gas and agribusiness are forecast to grow more than 10 per cent more quickly than the global economy over the next 20 years’. We certainly tick quite a few boxes there. Seize the day!

VIP Cutting Connection Bikes on Marsh How long have you been involved in cycling?

I have been involved in cycling for around three and a half years now. I began participating at a local level, and now I am involved with cycling at an international level. My dad (David Harris) has been in the cycling game since 2003 now, which has given him a fair bit of cycling knowledge; this has been really beneficial with the opening of Bicycle Central on Marsh.

How long have you owned your business?

We have owned the business for around 3 months now and it has been up and running officially for 7 - 8 weeks, so we are quite a new business, but it is continuing to grow.

What do you specialise in?

We specialise in service and helping you with your bike set up and training. We are always happy to see you in the shop, and we will do what we can to improve your riding experience. We have raced and serviced mountain bikes on the world stage, and we have been involved with a national road team. We also do bike fits and coaching. Dad is an accredited mountain bike coach and an Austcycle instructor and has a large amount of expertise in this area. We have also got very experienced mechanics who have worked on all kinds of bikes, from World Cup racing bikes to your common commuting bike. So really, we specialise in all things bikes!

How long have you been at the Wicklow complex, and what do you like most about being there? We have been at the Wicklow complex for over five years now.

The location is excellent with plenty of parking near the Tourist Information Centre. Clients love the fact that they can visit Café Affamato next door, and the Wicklow courtyard is a great place to relax in the sun.

Tell us about your staff and services? VIP currently has five staff members. All of our hairdressers are fully qualified and have a wealth of experience between them. Our newest staff member, Rob Carlon, has recently joined the team after moving back from Sydney.

Rob is very experienced, having worked at one of Sydney’s top salons, has worked at Fashion Week in Sydney and Melbourne, styled hair for various designers and magazines and has been an educator for GHD and KEVIN.MURPHY. We provide the latest season hair fashion services, including cuts, colours and blowdrys. We also provide hair-up and blowdry services for those special occasions such as weddings and formals.

Plans for the future? We are looking to build up Rob’s client base, given he has only just started with us.

This shouldn’t be too much of a challenge once people realise the expertise and experience that he has. It also helps that he is a really nice guy.

Wicklow Hotel How long have you been the manager at the Wicklow?

In 2011, I was employed here as a casual bar attendant whilst working full-time as a senior beauty therapist.

When a position came up for the assistant manager’s position in 2012, I then became full-time.

Since then, I have now become the venue manager.

Describe the pub’s atmosphere? The Wicklow hotel is the biggest pub in Armidale, with 4 bars – 3x function rooms and 5 businesses within the hotel providing our local community and visitors with a great atmosphere. With the only courtyard in town, it gives a great feeling to be able to sit outside and enjoy the weather and have a few drinks – lunch dinner or coffee with friends and family especially on a Friday – Saturday – Sunday afternoon; with Sunday having live music in the courtyard, it’s a great afternoon.

What are the upcoming events?

ancer Councils Dancing with the Stars was the brainchild of the the Coffs Harbour Office, part of the Northern Region of the Cancer Council NSW, now moving into its 4th year at Coffs Harbour.

It has was embraced by the Tamworth community holding its first Dancing with the Stars in June this year, raising an amazing $89,504. Now it is Armidale and community’s turn.

The concept of the Dancing with the Armidale Stars is a fun fundraiser for the Cancer Council of NSW, where local community members become the ‘Star’, with each contestant committed to raise money by way of fundraising activities, sponsorship or donations. Each Star is matched with a professional dance instructor to learn a particular dance style in preparation for the gala evening event, which is being held on Saturday 14 December 2013 at the Armidale Servies, where their peers, friends and family pay money to see the Stars ‘strut their stuff’!

The Stars only perform one dance.

There will be three prize categories on the night: Highest Fundraiser – this will go to the Star who raises the most money before the event.

People’s Choice – this will be voted for on the night by the audience.

Judges’ Choice – this will be voted for by our panel of expert judges.

On the night, it will be a night of nights with lots

of fun and excitement. Along with the dancing performances, there will be entertainment and an auction. We are expecting over 400 guests to cheer and encourage our Stars.

Cancer Support Services and information services to help locals who are diagnosed with cancer and to help their families.

Advocacy to lobby Governments so they can legislate to help prevent cancer.

A recent new service available within the New England and North West is Inala House, patient care accommodation located behind the North West Cancer Centre Tamworth, which the Cancer Council NSW has committed to the management of for 3 years.

Cancer Council NSW works to support schools with ther sun protection policies by offering free participation in the Sunsmart Program.

CARL MERTEN AND JOAN RELKE Carl Merten and Joan Relke are exhibiting at Gallery 126 from November 1 through to November 30.

ow long have you lived in the area? We moved onto our property over 22 years ago. There was nothing here but kangaroos and other wildlife, and for the first three years, we lived in a double decker bus, until we turned two train carriages into a home.

Describe the type of artwork you specialise in? Joan At heart, sculpture is my first passion, although painting is becoming increasingly seductive. Carl and I met in a bronze casting workshop in Canada in 1982, and since 1984, we have principally made our living from large sculptural figurative and abstract commissions in bronze. We have also carved stone, with our most recent commission completed last year at Gunnedah – 4 large stone carvings commemorating various sectors of the Gunnedah community. Both Carl and I have also worked in cast aluminium, placing a large sculpture each in The Glen at Uralla.

After completing a PhD in Studies in Religion in 2001, I wanted to create large sculptural interpretations of the female mythological elements I discovered in the ancient world. I turned to ceramics as a more accessible

material than bronze, and since then we have accumulated 5 kilns and a large ceramic facility in our home studio. Many of these works are included in this current exhibition.

I also trained in Chinese ink painting in my early 30s and for the last several years have worked towards my own expression of this ancient art form, on both paper and ceramic surfaces.

Joan From the beginning, I strove to make shapes that conveyed some kind of spiritual quality.

Around the same time, a good friend introduced me to Carl Jung, the psychologist.

Carl I enjoy exploring my creativity in a variety of ways. Working in clay is the first of many steps in the creation of sculptural forms in a variety of materials for our commissioned works. Rediscovering ceramics has resulted in a focus on constructed forms, vessels, and sculpture, expressing my interest in the whimsies of the human condition. Included in this show are paintings celebrating the more gritty aspects of human endeavour.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Also obvious is the Eastern influence on paintings and sculpture, in particular, Buddhist sculpture and Chinese painting and calligraphy.

Carl We live in a period of information overload, and I feel at times overwhelmed by it. My inspiration comes from many sources – nature, technology, the many publications we subscribe to. Living in our rural seclusion gives us the

opportunity to assess this deluge of stimulation timulation and sort those creative moments from thee melee.

The studio environment affords the quiet focus cus of creative contemplation that I find increasingly important. While some of my work seriously explores the aesthetics of balance, form, and line, more and more I find myself just wanting to have fun in the playful way that clay allows.

When is your exhibition at Gallery 126, and what can people expect to see? Our exhibition opens on November 1 at 5pm and continues until November 30. Earlier this year, we spent 5 weeks at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, creating works using the famous Chinese porcelain and celadon glazes. Some of the pieces in this exhibition come from that experience, and others made subsequently reveal the impact of this intense immersion in Chinese culture.

Coming back to Australia from all this stimulation and focused creativity has deepened our enthusiasm for ceramics as a vehicle for figurative and abstract sculpture. Development of our knowledge and skills in the practical technicalities and challenges of glazing after experiencing the virtuosity of traditional and cutting edge contemporary ceramics in China is hopefully evident in the works on exhibition.

One of Australia’s oldest standing Law firms is Armidale’s own AW Simpson & Co. Focus learns more about this company as they celebrate 150 years in business.

hen and why did A W Simpson & Co begin? Albert Simpson came to Armidale by horse-drawn coach in 1863 on his way north. In those days a coach didn’t travel much over twenty (20) miles per day, and so Simpson stayed overnight in an Armidale hotel. He was approached by a miner from Hillgrove to represent him in the Mining Court the next morning. He agreed to represent the man for a fee of 100 sovereigns (200 sovereigns if he won). He won the case and was asked by townsfolk to stay and practise, o We have a phot because they did not have a solicitor. How long have you been in your offices at Faulkner Street? An article in the Armidale Chronicle of 9 December 1875 said, “Mr Simpson is having built a very comfortable brick office in Faulkner Street.”

Thus we understand it was around that time that he moved to the front part of the current office at 121 Faulkner Street. Each room had a fireplace and the ceilings were of pressed metal.

Mr Paul Johnstone recalled that when he started work as an Articled Clerk before the Second World War, his first job in the winter was to go out into the backyard and chop the firewood

and place a pile of firewood beside each of the fires in the office each day. The front counter at reception was originally a part of the bar of one of the many Hillgrove hotels. The offices were extended to the size they are today during the 1970s.

Can you give us a brief history of the company? Albert Whitby Simpson worked in the firm for 47 years. His son Arthur Wakefield Simpson worked in the firm for 42 years.

After World War I in which they both served, Eustace Simpson (1884-1953), another son, and J L G Johnstone (1881-1968) practised in the firm for 41 years and 43 years respectively. After World War II, J L G Johnstone’s son Paul L Johnstone MBE (1922-2010) and F T (Tom) Johnstone (19061991), J L G Johnstone’s nephew, carried on the practice for 35 and 40 years respectively. They were both notable for their war service and their community service. Tom’s son, Ian Johnstone, came in 1964 and practised for 40 years until retiring in 2003. There have been many employed Solicitors over the years, and the other partners have included David Edwards (1985-1990) who is now a Barrister in Brisbane, Judith Housego (1987) who became a Barrister in Sydney, Austin Rummery (1992-1994), Danny Bricknell (1992-1993) who now practises at Gladesville, and David A B White, the

What significant changes have you seen in the law over the years? The main change has been in the volume of law. Tell us about your team? We have four solicitors and four support staff. Special Counsel Clifton (Cliff) Baker joined us in July this year, returning to Armidale after an extensive career in law (admitted in 1976) including 13 years at UNE lecturing in Law, and in practice in Darwin and Toowoomba. Cliff is practising

in compensation law and insurance claims, employment law and work disputes, and Will making strategies, Estates, and Family Provision. Elizabeth Parker joined the firm in 2012, having obtained her BA (Hons) LLB in 1993 at Macquarie University. She worked in a practice in Mosman, mostly in Property law, including large Strata developments administering deceased estates, and preparing Wills and Powers of Attorney. Elizabeth’s legal work includes criminal and care matters, but she has always had an interest in legal issues for the elderly, as they face decisions about their care, housing, family issues. Clive Sharkey practises in Criminal Law and Family Law and is available to do Legal Aid work. David White has been with the firm since August 1987 and practises mainly in conveyancing, estates, family law, commercial matters and litigation.

The Armidale Montessori Pre-School has officially begun operating as Armidale’s newest Long Day Care Centre for 2 – 5 year olds and boy, are they are doing it in style!

D

uring the school holidays, the preschool was completely refurbished and now displays a new, fresh clean look that highlights the beautiful Montessori materials and the Centre’s focus on a quality Montessori Education.

The Montessori Pre-school and Long Day Care now offers two designated classrooms for their early learners – the ‘Nido Room’ and ‘Bambini Room’, both of which are equipped with authentic Montessori learning materials to ensure their students achieve the very best start in life.

Within each classroom, the focused Montessori 3 hour work cycle remains from 9am each morning, followed by afternoon programming that allows children opportunities for free play, whole class group work and

musical learning experiences. Children who are attending school next year also have access to the focused ‘school readiness’ programme in the afternoons. The Service’s new operating hours are from 6:45am to 5:45pm Monday to Friday 50 weeks of the year.

In order to cater for diverse learning experiences and a rapid growth in the school community, the Pre-school has employed 4 new staff to add to and strengthen their current team. One of their newest members is Director, Melodie Glass who has joined the Pre-school on a permanent part time basis to manage the service and ensure the transition between the Pre-school to Long Day Care is successful.

Melodie Glass is both a highly qualified and experienced Early Childhood Teacher, who

specialises in the management of Childcare Services. Melodie is a most welcome asset to the Armidale Montessori Pre-school and the Montessori Community welcomes her with open arms.

Families will be able to enjoy quality shopping, food and coffee while taking a look at the new Pre-school. Staff will be offering tours and lesson demos and there will be face painting and a sausage sizzle for children to enjoy.

The centre environment reflects a structure of spontaneous play based learning curriculums.

With extensive understanding of children’s development, observation and family input as a team we build a cohesive curriculum indulging day books, learning stories, portfolios and focus children, which are delivered to families electronically.

Babies nurturing begins with “Tummy Time” allowing them to explore the new refurbished nursery. Toddlers investigate their surroundings through age/stage development and discoveries through updated equipment and technology practices. Preschool children enhance their play styles with focus on Preschooling in preparation of transitioning to big school. The curriculum reflects our routine which is flexible and alters to individual child’s needs. During 2013 the centre has made many changes within the indoor and outdoor environment including an even mix of both built and natural environments. Our service thrives on the quality equipment, curriculum, and personality of each educator that delivers a home like caring environment. hat is the 2013 Butterfly Ball, and what does it stand for? Armidale Dumaresq Council, Recreation Access Project will be celebrating International Day of People with Disability and are proud to present local debutantes and their partners to the community during the Don’t DIS MyAbility Butterfly Ball.

Don't DIS my ABILITY continues to support the aims of the NSW Government's Stronger Together funding by raising community awareness of the needs of people with disability and their ability to make life choices relating not only to their care, but their career aspirations, relationships and social activities. It is about promoting positive perceptions and building an environment that encourages active participation in social activities and inclusive communities.

The Butterfly Ball is an all-ages and all-inclusive formal ball that acknowledges and promotes the individuals right to belong to their local community, to enjoy equal privileges and opportunities, and experience the same traditional rite of passage of women since the 16th Century.

What will be the formalities of the night? The event is open to the public and will be held at the Armidale Ex Services Memorial Club on Saturday 16 November from 5.30pm to late.

Tickets are now on sale from the 'Servies' and include light supper and live music. Tickets cost $30pp and $20 concession.

Recreation Access Project

Armidale Laundry Services Hi Gaye. Tell us about Armidale Laundry Services? We have owned Armidale Laundry Services for 4 and a half years, and I employ 13 local staff.

The service we offer is a full linen hire service, sheets, pillow slips, towels, bath mats, hand towels, face cloths, all sizes of table linen etc. or if preferred, the laundering of your own linen.

Private customers are also welcome, for the laundering of curtains, blankets or doonas. We service motels, hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and private customers in Armidale, Uralla, Walcha and even Gunnedah.

Our vans is very busy making deliveries and pick ups around the town six days a week. This time of year, private customers like to have their table linen nicely starched and ironed before Christmas.

In 2011 we were the winner of the CRS NSW/ACT Employer Awards in the Small Business Award category.

We are involved in the Armidale community, as we have lived here for more than 30 years. We have recently joined Locals 4 Locals and we support many events in the town such as Can Assist and The Butterfly Ball.

Hi Suzanne. What is the Recreation Access Program? The Recreation Access Project is for people aged from sixteen to sixty five and has something for everyone. We believe everyone has the right to community participation and to be valued as individuals.

We advocate for people with disability to access services and recreation leisure activities on a non-discriminatory basis.

How important is your community to you?

Many times during the year local businesses like ours are asked to support things happening in our community.

The requests are varied, but everyone is looking for help to make their function a success. At Rapidclean we try our best to support the people who support us. Rapidclean is proud to supply cleaning supplies and equipment to many local disability services.

The Recreation Access Project relies on funding from NSW Family and Community Services, Ageing Disability and Home Care and the continued support of a team of dedicated volunteers and the Armidale community to provide a choice of fun, safe and flexible activities for the individuals.

What is on offer? Coffee and Craft groups have enjoyed scrapbooking, painting ceramics, sand and glitter art, and origami on Tuesday mornings. DanceAbility is very popular with weekly workshops in Rock and Roll, social ballroom and party dance classes and is held at PCYC on Thursday evenings. DanceAbility promotes healthy and active lifestyle and social interaction as well as boosting confidence and self esteem.

Our Sportability program is held on Friday afternoons 2pm - 4pm at PCYC and has included Archery, Futsal, Bocce and we will be introducing a variety of additional sports activities, such as Table Tennis, Zumba, Basketball and Martial Arts. Recreation Access welcomes all new participants for social group activities.

emind us how long Armitage & Buckley have been servicing the New England and what you specialise in? Well, Armitage & Buckley was originally established back in 1974

by David Armitage & Norm Buckley, who were both very successful stock and station agents.

When Norm and David decided it was time to retire, my wife, Debbie, and I purchased the business from them in 1995. So the business has a long association with the livestock producers of this area and continues to offer superior service to our primary production clients. Our son, Jai, bought into the business a couple of years ago, adding to the family owned and run ethos of the business. We are primarily Stock & Station Agents, which means we are experts in the sale of all types of livestock – through the Saleyard, direct consignments, out of the Paddock, Auctionsplus etc. We have a quality

team of experienced and qualified livestock specialists that can assess our clients’ livestock, and advise them of the options available, and the best way to get the optimum return for their commodity. The real estate side of our business focuses on the rural property and lifestyle sector, offering prospective buyers a choice of lifestyle blocks or larger primary production properties.

We hear that there have been a few changes; tell us about these? We have had a few changes over the past few months.

The most exciting of these is the full-time employment of Luke Heagney. Luke, born and raised in Guyra, used to work for us after school and at our weekend sales, or when on school holidays. I recognised fairly early on that Luke had all the talents and traits required to make an excellent stock agent – so when he finished Year 12, Luke did a 12 month stint on a 2 million acre property in Queensland, to learn some

hands on farm and animal management skills, and to give him some insight as to the daily and seasonal pressures livestock producers face.

Then in January, he joined us on a full-time basis as an Auctioneer/Stockman. Luke has been auctioneering the sheep on Wednesdays and the bulls and heifers at the weekly prime cattle sales and shows a real flair. We are delighted to welcome such an obliging, genuine, polite and caring young man to our team.

For the past 16 years we have been conducting a Bi-Monthly Small Livestock, Poultry and Farm Machinery Sale. Initially this sale was conducted to cater for the hobby farmers who could not attend weekly market sales, but as the years rolled on, this sale became a major event, with at least 250 registered bidders at each sale.

Over time though, we have found that this type of sale had run its course, and we made the difficult decision to cease this sale. We have also

decided to move our Monthly Saturday Store Sales that we hold as the season dictates, to a week day – yet to be decided.

On a sad note, Tom Piddington left us recently to pursue a career change as a full-time grazier.

Tom was a valued member of our staff and one of the best auctioneers I’ve heard. His auctioneering was polished, his advice and interaction with clients, livestock buyers, other agents and fellow staff was professional, and he was a real asset to our firm. We wish him every success in his new endeavours.

Plans for the future ... Well, like all businesses our main aim for the future is the consistent expansion of our client base. We will continue to help our clients achieve the best for their enterprises, help them to meet their compliance obligations, and continue to offer them our excellent service and honest advice.

Armidale Craftarama Armidale Craftarama commenced more than 30 years ago as a fundraising event by Armidale Quota Club as an opportunity for local and visiting crafts people to display and sell their varied and beautiful work. Craftarama has a Christmas focus and provides the opportunity to purchase ‘that perfect original Christmas gift’.

Craftarama is being held at the Armidale City Bowling Club in Dumaresq Street on Saturday 23 November from 9am to 4pm and Sunday 24 November from 10am to 3pm. Admission each day is $5 per adult; children under 12 years are free.

Many Armidale businesses have provided sponsorship towards the cost of running Craftarama, which is Armidale Quota Club’s main fundraiser. The charities chosen to receive funds this year are the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, QI of Armidale UNE Hearing & Speech Scholarship and Quota projects.

hen and why did Bullens bikes first first begin? Our family is originally from Newcastle, with Jock from a mining family from the suburb of Cardiff and Lois coming from Mayfield and her family working in the BHP. Jock worked in the bicycle industry after leaving school and moved on to being a motor mechanic and then a bicycle company representative.

Lois worked at a chemist after leaving school in the suburb of Mayfield.

Jock used to call on a well-established family business in Armidale, Forbes Bicycle Shop, which had been owned by the Forbes family for a number of years – John (Jack) Forbes. Jock purchased the business from the Forbes family and proceeded to move the Bullen family from Newcastle

When did Jock, yourself and Mitch first become involved in cycling, and what level did you each reach in the sport? Jock rode bikes mainly for transport in Newcastle and to get to and from school, but then started to compete in the racing game from the age of 13. Throughout his career his achievements are 18 NSW Country Titles, 5 NSW State Titles, as well as a bronze medal at the Australian National Titles. He also made the short selection teams for the Commonwealth Games and Olympic Teams, but at the time team members were preferred to be chosen from the major cities, so he was overlooked. After entering the business, he moved into the management and mechanic’s side of the sport, as he had been building bicycle frames as well as repairing and building bikes since his youth in Newcastle. His experience in the shop prompted the Australian national team to call on his talents to pioneer the success of the Australian cycling team from the late ‘70s onwards.

This involved representation in 6 Olympic teams, 7 Commonwealth Games teams, as well as all World Championships, National Championships, World Cups that the Australian team competed in over that period.

I (Mark) also raced competitively, starting my cycling career when moving to Armidale; again, being in the cycling trade since 12 years of age, helping Jock in Newcastle when he worked on bikes. One of my memories was when living in Newcastle Dad tendered for a contract to build wheels for Malvern Star bicycle company, as money was not all that plentiful. So I learnt how to build, tighten and true wheels because that is what we did as a family before and

after school and at night so we could fulfil the contract. I began racing in Armidale, as Dad wouldn’t let me start in Newcastle so when arriving in Armidale, Dad re-established the failing Armidale Club and we were on our way.

My achievements, whilst not as long as Jock’s and my memory’s not as good, but a few NSW Country Championships, NSW Northern Division Championships, NSW State Sprint Championships and Scratch Race and a Bronze Medal in the Australian Titles. I represented Australia in the Junior World Championships in Mexico in 1980, finished 10th, as well as being the mechanic for numerous national and international teams and mechanic for the Australian Paralympics team in Beijing.

Mitchell’s career is ongoing and in its early stages, he again worked in the family business throughout his school days, then full-time in the business until he moved away to follow his

What have been the biggest changes in cycling that you have seen? Probably the biggest changes we have seen is the selection of product that is available to the cyclist from back in the days when you had the 16”/ 20”/22”/24”/26”/27”/28” and generally two colours of each to choose from and accessories like one type of seat or one type of gearing system or one type of tyre selection.

Now the selection is endless; I would hate to guess how many seat selections you can have, or types of bike selection.

And on the mechanical side of the game, bikes are no longer toys – you pay, in some cases, thousands of dollars, so you expect a professional to look after your bike. The changes in this service are specialised, and our experience plays a major part in keeping up to date with all that is required, so we take this part very seriously and maintain the highest level of service.

From the smallest of parts to the hand built frame or hand built wheels, we can cover it all – I would nearly go as far as to say if we can’t do it or get it done in the bicycle trade, it CAN’T be done.

FAMILY LAW

W

hen parents decide they no longer wish to live together, one or both parents may seek to relocate to another town, state or country.

In some circumstances the relocation will greatly reduce the amount of time and involvement a child or children may have with the other parent.

Section 60CA of the Family Law Act 1975 (“the Act") provides that "in deciding whether to make a particular parenting order in relation to a child, a Court must regard the best interests of the child as the paramount consideration."

Family Law The Family Law (Shared Parental Responsibility) Amendment Act 2006 made significant changes to the way in which a Court determines the best interests of the child. Most notably, section 60B of the Family Law Act 1975 provides guidance to the Court in relation to the duties and obligations imposed upon parents. Among other things, those duties include "... that children have the benefit of both their parents having a meaningful involvement in their lives, to maximise the extent consistent with the best interests of the child ..." While the Act makes no specific provision for the body of family law generally referred to as "relocation cases", in Morgan & Miles [2007] FamCA 1230 Justice Boland made an observation that the Act does require the Court to exercise a structured discretion to determine appropriate orders to be made.

Determination of the Best Interests of the Child When parents are unable to agree and surrender the decision making to the Court, it is incumbent on the Court to evaluate the competing proposals. In determining a child's best interests, section 60CC of the Act provides primary and additional considerations that a Court must take into account. Primary considerations include: the benefit to the child of having a meaningful relationship with both parents; and, protecting a child from physical or psychological harm.

Additional considerations include, among other things: any views expressed by a child (pending the child's maturity and level of understanding); the relationship between the child and each parent and others such as grandparents or other relatives; willingness of parents to facilitate and encourage a continuing relationship between the child and other parent; the effect on the child of any separation from either of their parents or any other child or relative with whom the child has been living; the practical difficulty and expense of a child spending time and communicating with a parent; the culture, traditions and lifestyle of the child; if the child is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child, the right to enjoy that culture with others

who share that culture; and, the attitude to the child and to responsibilities of parenthood demonstrated by the parents and the extent to which each of the parents have fulfilled or failed to fulfil their responsibilities as a parent. The Court must also consider events and circumstances that have existed since any separation of the parents.

Relocation Matters In Sampson v Hartnett (No 10) [2007] FamCA 1365 (Full Court) the majority expressed the view that there is inherent power under section 114(3) (Injunctions) of the Act to prohibit parents from relocating or, alternatively, to order that a parent relocate to a specified location in order to secure the best interests of a child.

Indeed, the Court can make orders for the parent that opposes the relocation to relocate themself.

This may be the case, for example, where an opposing parent has residential means, employment potential, social networks and a family history of living or spending time with the child at the town or city in which the relocating parent proposes to live with the child. In Sampson, however, the majority concurred that the power to restrain, prohibit or order relocation is likely to be "rare" and might only be exercised "in the most exceptional cases".

In the matter of Goode & Goode [2006] FamCA 1346 the Court emphasised [para 65] the importance of the presumption of equal shared parenting. These factors were further considered in the relocation case of Taylor and Barker [2007] FamCA 1246 where provisions contained in section 60CC and 65DAA of the Act were also considered. In that case the Court determined that despite the father's application for equal parenting time the relocation of the mother and child from Canberra to Queensland was approved giving weight to the mother's future happiness and contentment and the benefit that her future happiness and contentment would have on the child.

When an irretrievable breakdown of a marriage or de facto relationship takes place, the importance of considering proper parenting arrangements is essential. Estranged parents should carefully consider not only their own personal and lifestyle preferences but also the guidelines contained in the Act for the best interests of the child. Taking the time to reconsider lifestyle and parenting arrangements and, if necessary, retaining professional legal, financial and family counselling services to assist with guidance is an important step toward creating new paradigms for positive parenting arrangements and healthy family life.

The month kicked off with thousands of Rugby lovers arriving in Armidale to commemorate 120 years of New England Rugby; in total, there were 700 participants aged from 10 years – 83 years. he event was superbly organised, and there was a significant flow on effect for retailers, restaurants, pubs and motels. Pete Byron was 16 when he started working part-time with Fishing Tackle Australia, the world's largest fishing and tackle store. ishing Tackle Australia is the world's largest fishing and tackle store; how and when did you get involved with this business? I was 16 years old when I started part-time work with Fishing tackle Australia and moved to fulltime after finishing my HSC, and 15 years later I’m still here.

your customers? This means our customers, both in store and online, have access to the most comprehensive range of fishing tackle and outdoor gear all at the one location. With the world's largest fishing tackle store, Coffs Harbour Outdoor World and the Kayak Shak on the same site, there is nowhere else with such a range of products in the same place.

Tell us a little bit more about your journey so far with Fishing Tackle Australia? As mentioned, I started working weekends in the shop at 16, then moved to full-time later on. I spent a few years as mail order manager before moving into the office to assist on the mail order catalogue and was involved in the development of our website. Now I am part of the management team that oversees the running of the entire business.

How many staff do you have across the group? Are they retail staff or experts in their selected fields? Between all the stores and mail order, we have almost 50 staff, all with experience and extensive knowledge in their respective areas of the business. Being an independent, local business, our aim has always been to provide expert service and advice in all of our stores.

Over the past thirty years, how has the business developed? Originally a gun shop started by Reg and Carly Coutts-Smith in the '70s, the business transitioned to a dedicated fishing shop under the name Fishermans Heaven and has continued to grow ever since.

The business name was changed to Fishing Tackle Australia to match up with the name of the shop's Mail Order Tackle Magazine.

The mail order magazine and the eventual website had a huge influence on the business.

Selling products across Australia allowed the shop to stock the most expansive range of fishing tackle in the country. Expanding all the time, FTA grew into Australia’s, and eventually the world's, largest fishing tackle store. The business has also expanded laterally opening Coffs Harbour Outdoor World and the Kayak Shak on the same site.

What are the advantages of having all your stores based at the same site for

What does your business pride itself on? I would say our business prides itself on offering by far the largest range of fishing tackle and outdoor products at the best prices, whilst still providing the expert service and advice that comes with being an independent and homegrown business.

And in your professional opinion, where on the Coffs Coast is the best place to fish? It’s hard to answer that question, as there is fantastic fishing throughout the Coffs Coast and it depends on what kind of fishing you prefer. Around the harbour itself is a great central location for anyone visiting the area, with rock fishing and beach fishing on offer, as well as being the access point for offshore fishing, and there’s great fishing around the marina area, especially for kids and families.

My personal favourite locations though, would be the small Bass and Trout streams in the hinterland, which are only 10 - 45 minutes drive from Coffs Harbour.

I

dea Description New England Wind has arisen from a vision for long-term energy self-sufficiency with the aim to establish the first community-owned wind farm in NSW. A community-owned wind farm based on the New England Tablelands will have significant benefits for residents, businesses and organisations of all communities in this region.

New England Wind will establish a community-owned wind farm of 6-10 turbines with the ability to produce around half of the residential electricity usage of the New England region. It will be funded largely through investments from the local community.

The exact location of the project is not yet confirmed, but negotiations are underway regarding a proposed site on the New England ranges. The location will ultimately be determined by where there is wind and a good grid connection (likely to be on the Tablelands), however, the intention is to

benefit the whole New England community.

Community Benefits: There truly are big benefits both for individual shareholders as well as the wider community. Looking at HepburnWind, which is Australia’s first community windfarm, helps show this.

Hepburn’s two wind turbines generated 10,000,000 kWH of clean and renewable electricity in their first year. This is about as much used as 1,300-1,500 homes! They are now providing community grants, which topped $40,000 this year. The project employs four staff and has trained three dozen core volunteers in areas like project management, finance, communications and engagement. Camp Sew & So Coming in 2014 Remind us what Camp Sew & So is?

It is an unique annual sewing camp for people of all ages and abilities to create in a friendly, fun environment.

This event is on the beautiful NEGS campus with onsite accommodation and meals if required.

How successful has camp been? Very, we have participants from right across NSW and Queensland as well as great local support.

What courses are offered? In 2013 we are offering lots of choices from week long to 2 days in length. The two levels of teen sewing and the master class are week long while machine stitchery, the opulent cushion and fibre to fabric session are 2 days. As well we offer year 12 textile students a week of intensive instruction to complete a massive amount of their projects.

In addition there are two night classes for pattern making. One making patterns from ready made garments without taking them apart and pattern making by draping.

Tells us about the tutors? All are highly qualified hands on, creative, talented

teachers. They are leaders in their fields, with a wealth of up to date knowledge and experience in teaching adults and young people. These teachers are nationally recognised in their field.

Who can attend? Anyone who has a thirst for learning and is passionate about sewing as there are classes to suit all ages and levels of sewing. All groups are small for more individual help from your highly qualified and enthusiastic tutors.

Australia’s 14th Prime Minister is widely regarded as one of the greatest.

John Curtin’s achievement rests on his leadership of the nation during much of World War II, and Sheila Fullerton had the pleasure of working with him during this time ...

i Sheila. How did you come to work for one of Australia’s Prime Ministers, John Curtin?

I started off in Parliament House to work for PMG Eric Harrison. I went after I had been working in an insurance company in Melbourne. I always wanted to get out, as it was the Depression time and the government wasn’t employing, but eventually I sat for the Public Service Award and I came second, so I was appointed to the Prime Minister’s department in Canberra.

So I travelled by train; Canberra was quite new then and I lived in Hotel Kurrajong, as my father knew people from there. I worked from May 1938 to November 1944 when I got married, which was also the last year of the war. John Curtin became Prime Minister when two independents came and campaigned against Menzies, and he stood down. I can still remember Earle Page’s attack on Menzies.

My role in the office was stenographer and when I left, I was the senior stenographer.

This meant I dealt with any correspondence coming in and out that was sent to the Prime Minister or any other minister. If you wrote to the Prime Minister you got a response, and each letter was forwarded on. After that they were divided up to the departments – if it was legal, it went to the General Attorney. When we worked there we took an oath of loyalty and secrecy to the King. Loyalty was the key in the department; there were no leaks of information like these days. If you worked hard, they wanted you there.

Tell us about your time with John Curtin?

He was a wonderful man. He closed down the lodge and spent his time living in Kurrajong while the war was happening. He used to appear in the dining hall for meals; he had the same room as us – no special facilities.

He was friendly to everyone, especially the managers; they used to play bridge together.

I never went away with the Prime Minister, but I would go away with the department to Melbourne and Sydney for cables when the war was on. I once went with him to 2CA, where he gave a speech for victory of the allies in Africa over the national network on Sunday 16 May 1943. This followed surrender of Axis forces in Tunisia on the 13 May. Some 275 thousand prisoners of war were taken by Allies on this occasion, thus reducing markedly the capacity of the Axis and the capture of Italian colonies in Africa.

When he finished his speech he handed me his notes and said, “These might help you”.

It was handwritten and contained a number of corrections and amendments in the speech Curtin made on behalf of Australia.

The notes are now with my daughter, Mary, who thinks one day they might be worth something.

How did you end up in Armidale? In the late 1960s we came to Armidale, as my husband was a forester. He was stationed in Glen Innes, but worked in the area. I have six children, three boys and three girls. Only two of my children now live in Armidale; one is in Albury and three are in Sydney.
