Welcome to the October edition of New England FOCUS. pring is well and truly here in the New England, and how lucky are we to live in such a beautiful place – especially this time of year.

largely due to the generosity of one Armidale rosarian and partly due to the enthusiasm of the local Australian Garden History Society and National Trust members.

This month’s front cover is NERAM and their Smart Tree, as they celebrate 30 years; a big thank you to Evie Barnsley also, for being our model on this month’s cover. NERAM welcomes over 37,000 visitors every year to its gallery and is a very important part of the New England’s culture. NERAM is thirty years young, and director Caroline Downer tells us about the journey so far.

The Tree Group exists only because of community efforts! We have over 140 members and they all need to be thanked, along with various businesses and organisations around town. Armidale Dumaresq Council and the NSW State Government deserve a special mention of thanks. A special thanks needs to go to the Management Committee members, past and present, who have overseen the growth of the Tree Group through the years. Also, a big thank you needs to go to the dedicated staff, past and present, who have kept the organisation running and growing as well.

Are there any celebrations happening for the birthday?

To celebrate our amazing achievement of reaching 30 years this year, we are having a number of fantastic celebratory events. These include a birthday dinner at the Armidale

Town Hall on Saturday 12 October. Tickets are available from the nursery at 80 Mann St. We will also have an Open Day at the nursery on the 12th during the day as well. Come along for a BBQ, learn more about natives and take a walk through the woodland behind the nursery. Finally, on Sunday, October 13 we will be joining with NERAM and the Black Gully Music Festival in a joint Birthday Bash with music, workshops and culture at NERAM. What have been some of the most memorable momen moments for the art museum? 1997 – Stage Two opened with new gal gallery spaces, café, and artist studio.

2001 – Museum of Printing opened.

2012 – The Yellow Room appeal launched to raise money fo for the purchase of Margaret Olley’s magnum opus The Yellow Roo Room Triptych.

2013 – The Archibald Prize was hosted at NERAM for the first time.

How has the gallery changed and developed over the years? b bl the h b h h the h world ld h Probably biggest change is that has now gone digital. This means that we’re getting involved with interactive digital projects in the museum and connecting with our visitors in

new ways. For example, the Creating Memories project brought together Armidale High School students with people from Autumn Lodge. It was really great seeing older people interacting with new technologies and the younger people hearing about what life was like long before the internet had been invented! The resulting interactive exhibition captured the attention of all ages and emphasised how important sharing memories is, whatever format we choose. The digital revolution means new projects are possible, like getting more of our collection online, and it has changed the way we communicate with visitors, via email, our webpage and even fundraising.

What are some examples of how people connect with NERAM online? NERAM loves volunteers. Their contribution changes the whole dynamic of the gallery, from welcoming visitors, to hanging art on our walls. Over summer we’ll be welcoming a new volunteer from China, who is spending just a few weeks in Armidale with her friend, who’s a student at UNE. She read about our volunteer program on our website and emailed us her enquiry.

We can’t wait to meet her.

On Sunday 13 October we’ll team up our annual ARTplay Day with Black Gully Music Festival, under the banner of Armidale’s Big Birthday Bash. We want to have a giant ‘Collection Projection’ showing works from the collection on the back wall of the museum. So, we’ve turned to the internet for fundraising. We have a web page on the crowdsourcing website Pozible, where anyone can make a pledge. If we can meet our fundraising target by 1 October, we’ll be up and running, with works forming the backdrop to the evening’s entertainment.

Why is NERAM so important to our community? It’s not just that we matter – it’s that community is important to us. We welcome over 37,000 visitors a year to the museum, and they come for so many reasons. We always make sure that there’s great eat artwork to see on the wall and aim to have something for everyone. ryone. The Archibald exhibition brought in lots of people in their teens and twenties, because it’s just so interesting, and everyone likes ‘selfies’. Then we also cater for kids and families with school tours and holiday workshops and attract all ages to our art classes. Probably the best example has been the SMART Tree installation. We try to get everyone who comes into the building to add a leaf or a critter; it has turned out to be totally irresistible and completely non-ageist!

How can the public get involved in the 30th birthday celebrations? Lots of ways. Visit www.pozible.com/neramcollectproject, check out the project and make your pledge. Join us on 13 October from 10am and get working on an art activity, or listen to music in the gallery. There will also be food stalls and free activities, as well as irresistible projects for all ages. Behind the museum there are stalls from Sustainable Living Armidale, Landcare, New England Wind, UNE’s School of Environmental and Rural Science and others, with tours of the Community Gardens and Museum of Education. Then, stay or return, for the Black Gully Music Festival running from 3pm – 9pm, bring a rug and picnic, or buy food on the day. The gallery will be open until 8pm, but from dusk, it’ll be works on the Collection Projection that will set the scene for the rest of the evening.

NERAM would not be here if it was not for its many supporters. Whom would you like to thank? We really are a regional art museum, and we have so many supporters from our own community, from businesses to individual donors – too many

Friends of NERAM are, of course, our major supporter – they assist not only in sponsoring major exhibitions such as the Archibald Prize, but they also provide the catering and service at exhibition openings and other behind-the-scenes support. The Packsaddle Fundraisers have organised an annual selling exhibition at NERAM for the past 28 years and are donating the proceeds from their last two exhibitions to the Yellow Room Appeal.

And in 2012, the Margaret Olley Trust began its 5 year partnership with NERAM, donating funds to assist with staffing.

Plans for the future? We are never short of ideas here at NERAM! There are lots of wonderful exhibitions planned, many exciting events to entice and inspire people of all ages – art classes, drop-in kids activities, theatre, music, artist and curator talks … and more!

i Wayne. For those who don’t know, tell us about the fire in Armidale on 18 May 1932? It was around 4.30am when the fire station received a call about a fire at F. Braud and Co General Merchants at the corner of Beardy and Dangar Street; this is where the Optus Shop is open today. Eight firefighters headed down there to discover the back of the store was on fire where they kept the cars and stock.

However, there was a door they could get through to get to the back of the fire, where they had a chance of putting it out. At this stage they were aware of the 400 sticks of gelignite, 10 pounds of dynamite and a box of cartridges inside, but they were not aware of the 9,000 detonators in a box!

There was only three present out of the eight at this time and after 5 beats on the door by the Substation Officer in Charge, it resulted in a massive explosion. It was loud and it was felt through town that night, with windows shattering a block away. On the axe was Frederick Maizey – he was thrown by the explosion, but survived with some facial injury.

Beresford Jones and William Robinson were on the hose that night. Jones was killed instantly, with Robinson dying later that evening in hospital. Despite the danger of the shed exploding with great force, the surviving members of the Armidale Brigade attacked the raging fire while using a curtain of water to protect the explosives.

Their actions undoubtedly prevented a further explosion which would have resulted in the destruction of the busi-

These firefighters fought knowing there was gelignite inside, but then they continued to fight after the first explosion. The bravery exhibited by the eight firefighters of the Armidale Brigade was such that it was necessary to create a new medal.

To date, the Medal for Conspicuous Bravery has been awarded 26 times, the latest recipient being SO Carlos Henry, who rescued a three-year-old boy from a burning Kingswood home.

How was the anniversary to be celebrated? The night was celebrated and remembered on 20 September at the original place – the Armidale Town Hall. We had the original truck and helmet from the night of the fire. We also had photos and other memorabilia up and ran an airing on the film, which runs for 6 minutes.

What’s great is that we have a plaque in the fire station now for the officers who were killed that night, and we have had relatives and even distant relatives stop in to see it and learn more about the night. They travelled to the anniversary night also. The film, however, will be under wraps until later in October.

ow long have you been living in Armidale?

We (my wife, Fiona, and children, Alistair 10 and Cameron 8) moved up to Armidale in July 2013. We moved from Sydney, having been there for 6 years and then Perth, WA for the 15 years prior to that.

When did your passion for tennis start?

I was a late starter to tennis. I have British parents who were soccer fans, so I played soccer from 5 years until I was about 11, and then switched to tennis. As a junior I showed some promise, and I loved to compete (and still do!)

I always see people who think that you have to start a sport at 3 years old in order to succeed. That is not the case. It is about how much effort you put in during training and having a desire to ‘battle’, rather than focus on whether you win or lose. It is also about how much you listen and learn from those with the experience and expertise.

Where has tennis taken you?

Tennis has taken me to a variety of countries around the world, both playing and coaching. I have spent a number of years in America, Britain, Europe and Japan.

I have a teaching background and taught maths in a St. Pius X College in Chatswood for a few years. After playing for many years, the obvious next step was to teach tennis rather than maths.

In Australia I have coached in Sydney, Brisbane, Hamilton Island, Noosa and Perth.

On the way I have been able to meet a variety of people and do some amazing things. For over 10 years I was the head racquet restringer for the Hopman Cup Tournament in Perth. There I met (and strung for) Roger Federer, Pat Rafter, the Williams sisters, Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt and many more.

In Perth I was able to establish my own Tennis Academy.

MISS CATHERINE MACLEAN

A significant public garden is currently taking shape in Armidale, largely due to the generosity of one Armidale rosarian, and partly due to the enthusiasm of local Australian Garden History Society and National Trust members. eteran rose collector, Miss Catherine MacLean, is donating her extensive rose collection of many hundreds of roses to a rose garden which is being constructed on the site of the old orchard at Saumarez.

Preparation of the site began with help from Ducats and the Armidale Dumaresq Council.

Members of the AGHS local branch committed to establishing the garden, transferring the roses, and to maintaining the garden. A smaller group of AGHS members, known as ‘Miss MacLean’s Rosebuds’, began the task of confirming identification of the roses and preparing them to be moved.

All of these roses have been collected over the years and tended with loving care by Miss MacLean in her small suburban block in the heart of Armidale. AGHS members approached Saumarez Manager Les Davis, who was quick to realise the potential of the proposed garden, and the National Trust local committee applied for planning permission through the National Trust Head Office to the Heritage Council.

Meanwhile, local AGHS member and recognised botanist Ian Telford drew up a plan for the site, with the beds designed to showcase the various kinds of roses of which Miss MacLean had amassed extensive collections. The Sydney branch of the nationwide Heritage Roses In Australia Incorporated also came on board, offering advice and providing plans of their significant 12 new england focus.

However, those same mild conditions have called an early halt to the transfer of many more of Miss MacLean’s roses until winter next year.

Funding for the garden is in its early stages, and plans are underway for some major fundraising in the next few months.

Meanwhile, the ‘rosebuds’, under Miss MacLean’s guidance, will be cataloguing and preparing the remainder of her collection for moving next year.

It is hoped that the Saumarez rose garden will become part of a rose trail, including Parramatta, the Hunter Valley Gardens and the Toowoomba State Rose Garden.

hat is the background of the Australian Garden History Society?

The Australian Garden History Society was formed in 1980 to bring together people from diverse backgrounds with an interest in the various aspects of garden history, including horticulture, landscape design, architecture and related subjects. A not-for-profit organisation, the Society promotes knowledge and research, encouraging appreciation and concern for our parks, gardens and cultural landscapes as part of Australia’s heritage.

Its primary concern is to promote interest in, research into and the systematic identifying, recording and restoration of historic gardens.

The AGHS is a far reaching and far sighted nationwide organisation supported by active branches in each state and in some regional areas, all run by enthusiastic volunteers. It operates by focusing on several key objectives and engaging in a number of significant ongoing projects, which include recording of oral histories of those who have played a significant part in gardening, fostering research and supporting significant publications documenting our relationship with the Australian landscape.

Practical conservation is a key objective, and branches actively research their local areas to ensure significant gardens are included on state and national registers and AGHS also play an important role in advocacy, providing a link between local community and government.

The members of the organisation are a vibrant, energetic mix of the community who enjoy a busy social programme ranging from garden visits and functions, special guided bus tours, working bees and hands on demonstrations,

How can locals get involved?

Because the conference has been booked out for over six months, it is not possible for locals to attend the conference this year.

However, because we are the AGHS’s youngest sub-branch (formed in 2009), this is a very exciting time to get involved in the region’s garden history, as there are so many historical gardens still to be recorded and some still to be discovered. Our group, which is very enthusiastic, has several garden visits, workshops, weekend excursions – some combined with the Sydney branch, and in the future with the QLD branch, on the programme each year and the several meetings we have a year always end with a dinner and a few glasses of wine. And then of course, there are our special projects; see below.

Plans for the future?

As mentioned, we have many gardens to research and visit and we also plan to continue our workshops and education programmes. We are always on the lookout for historic gardens and for help with restoration funding and work. Come and join us.

Leanne Cooper from the Thunderbolts Festival committee tells FOCUS readers about the amazing events we can look forward to at this year’s festival.

ell us how the festival began and how it has grown over 15 years.

A group of Uralla business people held the first ‘Spring Fair’ 15 years ago to promote the town and attract visitors. Then it became ‘Thunderbolt Country Fair’ and evolved to the current ‘Thunderbolts Festival’ held the last weekend in October and attracting around 5,000 people to Uralla for the weekend, each year. It has become Uralla’s annual community event, which is supported by the Uralla Shire Council, local businesses and a passionate group of volunteers.

What are the events for the festival this year?

The main events which are held each year at Thunderbolts Festival are: at 11am the street parade (this year The Wild, Wild West theme), and the Billycart Derby and market stalls in our beautiful Alma Park (opp Uralla Bowling Club), with live music. Helicopter joyflights are a feature of the festival, available at Hampden Park (near Railway Station) from midday.

Activities in Alma Park this year include: Base Zero rock climb wall with trampoline bungees, mechanical bull, giant slide, jumping castle, merry-go-round, face painting, Al Heeney’s Rhythm & Blues Band, Soo-Wee Magic and acrobatic show by Hemlock. All food in Alma Park is provided by local not-for-profit groups; the SES are starting at 6am with bacon and egg rolls, Friends of McMaughs will have their famous Devonshire tea stall, St Joseph’s and Rocky River schools also providing food. There will be fairy floss, popcorn and slushies.

The Billycart Derby will run from 2pm in King St, with a total of $1,000 prize money up for grabs! Held in the memory of Sandy Philp, and members of his family will be coordinating the event. Bring your billycarts for a run, and you could win.

The Uralla main street: the New England Brewery will be holding free brewery tours at 1pm and 3pm, Uralla Wool Store, Granny Fi’s Toy Cupboard and Vintage on Hill will all be open, as well as The White Rose Diner, Trina’s Café and The Sweet Place.

The White Rose Diner will host Trivia from 4.30pm, so if you fancy a coffee, cool drink and something to eat, head in to the White Rose.

Thunderbolts Festival will wind up with fireworks sponsored by Uralla Bowlo at 8pm.

Holy Smoke is sure to put on a fantastic light show for us, held opposite the Uralla Bowlo in Queen St. The Thunderbolt Bull and Bronc Spectacular is on again, tell us more about this event.

Thunderbolt Rough Stock Rodeo will be on Saturday 19 October and is the second action packed rodeo for the small, though energetic Uralla rodeo committee. This year the committee decided to expand last year’s event to include bareback and saddle broncs.

The local community really got behind the event last year, raising $2,100 for Friends of McMaughs. The committee is looking to go bigger and better this year, when the cowboys yell ‘outside’.

ell us about the New England Wind Committee ...

New England Wind is led by a consortium of partners and professionals. Developing a community windfarm has quite a broad range of requirements ~ wind power, engineering, finance, capital raising, business management, research, planning, education and more! The consortium is a multiperson-party approach to better achieve this range of requirements for the project.

Stephen Gow has recently joined the consortium. The other members are Dr Chris Blanksby, Elizabeth Gardiner, Patsy Asch, Andy CavanaghDowns, Bar Finch, Paul Cruickshank and Adam Blakester.

How will the New England benefit from a wind farm?

There truly are big benefits – both for individual shareholders, as well as the wider community. Looking at HepburnWind, which is Australia's first community wind farm, helps show this.

Hepburn's two wind turbines generated 10,000,000 kWH of clean and renewable electricity in their first year. This is about as much used by 1,300 - 1,500 homes! They are

now providing community grants, which topped $40,000 this year. The project employs four staff and has trained up three dozen core volunteers in areas like project management, finance, communications and engagement. Plus, by owning their electricity infrastructure, they keep tens of millions of dollars circulating in their local economy instead of being paid in electricity bills to national and international companies.

New England Wind is likely to be about three-times the size of HepburnWind – equal to about half the residential electricity use in the Tablelands.

Has there been any further development on the proposed location?

Readers may recall that we found out earlier this year that our proposed location of Woodville East proved to be unviable due to the cost of connecting to the current electricity grid.

This was very disappointing, to say the least – especially after several years of work by quite a lot of people.

However, New England Wind has always had back-up sites. We are in negotiation on a new site right now, which is looking promising; however, these negotiations are sensitive and confidential until a successful agreement is reached.

What is the timeline looking like from 2013 to date of completion?

Our priority right now is to finalise the site negotiations. The next step will be wind monitoring and analysis, which in turn will enable us to start building the wind power and financial models.

Once we get to this point we will start fundraising to complete a full technical feasibility study in readiness for planning approvals.

In broad terms, and all going really well, we could be starting this study in 1-2 years’ time and then raising funds to build the wind farm in 3 - 4 years from today.

As you can see, it is a very big job. We've done more than $300,000 worth of work on the project to date. While most of this has been done by pro-bono and volunteer contributions, we are very grateful for the funding received from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, NSW Office of Fair Trading, The Earth Welfare Foundation, New England Mutual, Sustainable Living Armidale and Starfish Enterprises.

Where to from here?

It is really important that we keep building community interest, understanding and support. A community wind farm requires this focus at the same time as doing the technical side of things really well.

New England Wind has 848 supporters and had more than 50,000 connections last year though its website, newsletters, Facebook and media. We of course welcome more! So please sign up via our website or Facebook Page.

Also, we're negotiating pro-bono legal support to incorporate the Cooperative for the project. Once this is in place, we will be inviting membership.

How can the community get involved and support the project?

We have seats available on our Wind Farms Tour from Armidale to Canberra by coach

from 7 - 10 November. This is a great opportunity to learn first hand about modern wind farms, plus do some sight seeing and have some fun.

We are also seeking interest from volunteers to help out with our new Community Wind Power information centre. This is a very professional mobile exhibit for events, markets and the like. The volunteers will make a real difference to the project and learn a great deal about wind power, renewable energy and community education and engagement.

Lastly, New England Wind is registered with New England Mutual's Community Partnership program. We would really appreciate being nominated by current or new members to be their 'community partner'.

Having a sheltered area will mean we don’t have to cancel these events when it rains, and volunteers and animals will be more comfortable all year round.

Community Benefits The Armidale and District Branch of the RSPCA rehomes around 300 companion animals a year. Many have been abandoned or are unwanted, including those we rescue from the Companion Animal Shelter. Adopt-a-Pet-Days provide an opportunity for members of the community to come along and meet the animals we have available for adoption. We adopt many of our animals through these events. The shelter will belong to the community, so other individuals and groups would also be able to use it.

This is the 25th year we have had the St Peters Garden weekend in Armidale. Since 1989, St Peters Garden Weekend has been able to offer a wide range of gardens in the Armidale, Uralla, Guyra and surrounding areas. t has been a wonderful privileg privilege ge to be able to view so many spectacular gardens, learn the stories around how the gardens were established and developed and meet the garden owners.

Over the years we have had tens of thousands of visitors to the gardens, who have come from near and far, with some years, buses full of garden enthusiasts travelling long distances to come and enjoy the beauty of New England gardens in the springtime.

The organising committee sincerely thanks all the garden owners from the past 25 years, who have invested so much time and energy into preparing their gardens ready for the St Peters weekend. Without their enthusiasm and dedication, the weekend would not happen!

There are some very established gardens and some newer developing gardens. There are 4 gardens located in Uralla. The gardens are open from 10am and close at 5pm each day.

As usual, there are also associated activities with the garden weekend, with various stalls to be held in the St Peters Parish centre on the Saturday morning, including a plant stall. The Australian Plant Society will hold their native new england focus.

Lunch and morning tea and afternoon tea will be available in selected gardens over the weekend, along with morning tea and lunch at the Paris Centre on Saturday. Also, as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations, the St Peters Cathedral bells will be open for inspection between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 3 Nov.

The St Peters Cathedral will be open for the public on both the Saturday and Sunday.

We are turning the Town Hall into a very energised, interesting theatre-in-the-round acting space, providing closer contact with the audience, and have assembled a lot of talent with around 30 performers, musicians, designers, writers and technical people involved. Judith Ross-Smith is our producer and I wrote the play with a lot of input from local historians, including Ian Johnstone and Judy Grieve. Some members of the Armidale City Band are also participating.

What is the play celebrating?

Armidale – Our Town is part of our Sesquicentenary celebrations, marking 150 years of local government and is also the Armidale Dumaresq Civic Precinct Committee’s major fundraiser for 2013.

The Sesquicentenary Committee of Council, the Armidale & District Historical Society and the Armidale Drama & Musical Society are also supporting us.

Other Sesquicentenary events include the launch of a book on the history of Armidale, a celebratory dinner in the Town Hall, and a photographic exhibition and 3D model of the town as it was in 1867, four years after the proclamation of Armidale as a municipality, in the Armidale Folk Museum.

Friday 22 November at 11am and at 8pm (Gala Night). Saturday 23 November at 2pm and 8pm.

mily Thomas has spent much of her young years caring for her brother, Edward, who has severe Autism and is non-verbal. There are many young carers in our community and Emily, supported by The Ascent Group, would like to support them as well. Emily has trained with Carers NSW as a carer representative and most recently as a member of the Australian National Young Carer Team, met with Tony Abbott to discuss the needs of young carers. Emily is a trained young carer facilitator and has presented at several conferences on the needs of young carers, as well as facilitated young carer retreats.

If you are a young carer with a brother or sister with a disability or mental health issue or care for an older person in your family, we would like to hear from you. Young carers take on responsibilities far beyond their years, and duties may include cooking, washing, cleaning, supervision and personal care, to name a few.

Our aim is to make contact with as many young carers as possible and organise an event at which young carers can express their needs for support. The support activities will be designed around young carer needs.

There isn’t anywhere else like Daily Ritual in Armidale, let alone the region. Where else can you select from over 150 different teas, or sip on Coffee that has consistently won awards at some of Australia’s biggest food/coffee shows? We are also different in a sense that you can hear yourself think, and chat amongst friends in a quiet, relaxed environment. One other thing that set us apart is our trading hours. We cater for the people that wish to get a coffee after 2pm, staying open 'til 5pm MondayWednesday and open a further hour on Thursday & Friday, closing at 6pm.

MUSIC will be the highlight of the University of New England’s 75th anniversary dinner dance.

he 17-piece Glenn Miller Tribute Band and the Andrew Sisters Tribute Band will dazzle you with their sound and performance as the university relives music from the 1930s and 40s. Students and staff from those early years of the New England University College, established in 1938, would no doubt have listened to this music and enjoyed the big band sound.

Now it’s your chance to hear the music live and join in the fun. To be held at the UNE’s Wright Centre on Saturday, October 26, the dinner dance is one of two major community functions put together by the university to celebrate the 75th anniversary.

From a small beginning with five lecturers and 24 students, UNE now has more than 20,000 students enrolled and more than 1,000 academic and professional staff.

Most of the staff and students in the late 1930s were initially housed in Booloominbah, the historic house on campus. Now the university has students located throughout the world and a technology hub located in the heart of Parramatta, as well as purposebuilt student accommodation and a range of special-purpose teaching facilities.

On Saturday, April 30, 1938, the New England University College was officially opened in the presence of the Governor of NSW and the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney.

The weekly Sensory Gym program is an amazing resource that we offer to our transition children. We also offer pottery classes, and these are a big hit with our little ones. They absolutely love it.

The children learn through their senses. We program games, exploration, songs and creative experiences into every day and because it's so much fun, they don't even know they are building essential skills.

The big objective for me as a teacher is to have the children leave transition confident and ready for the next big step into Kindergarten ... which is really not so big once you have completed an exciting year of learning at St John's.

ow long have you lived in the area?

I have lived in Armidale off and on for the last 25 years. I was originally a student at UNE doing post graduate studies and then in 2000 I moved into a position teaching visual arts education in the School of Education, UNE. Before moving to Armidale with my family I had done undergraduate degrees in visual arts and taught art in a number of schools both in Australia and India. My teaching at UNE requires me to teach art theory, practice and pedagogy to pre-service teachers. In terms of art practice, we work with a real diversity of art forms and I think the students have fun, despite not always being artistically inclined. My husband, Andrew Alter, is well known in the community because he taught music studies at UNE until a few years ago.

He currently works at another university in Sydney, so I try and spend time there with him whenever I can. My children are all 'grown up' and live away from Armidale, so I find I have much more time to play in my art studio than I ever did before.

When is your exhibition at Gallery 126, and what can people expect to see?

I will be showing paintings on canvas and some framed works on paper. I have called the exhibition 'A Stone's Throw', as in 'a stone's throw from here'. There are a couple of reasons for that choice of title. Firstly, I am responding to landscape that isn't very far from my home base, and also I have quite a few paintings and drawings that incorporate rocks and stones.

I love the sculptural and textural qualities of stones!

There are a number of works that I have done at different times over the last year, so there is a variety of subjects and styles on display. For example, I have a series of colourful abstract paintings where I have layered lines of colour and alternatively, there are a number of wide panorama scenes.

Image Photography Award winning photographer Karissa Tuckwell shares her passion for her work When and why did you first become involved with photography?

I’ve been in the photographic industry for over 8 years. I started photographing friends’ children and friends’ weddings, all for no charge. It was over a year of practicing and going to Sydney for other courses that I started charging. I then registered my business.

I just love people and photographing people’s special moments in their lives. I get to share a human’s most closest and precious memories, and for that I am truly honoured! I get to capture and get goosebumps when a groom sees his bride for the first time, or when a father sheds a little tear when he gives his daughter away.

Tell us about the types of photography you specialise in?

Weddings, newborns and family photography.

I also do a lot of commercial photography. I currently shoot over 40 weddings a year and love shooting closer to home. But by the time Armidale people call, I’m usually booked. I’m well known in Tamworth and the Hunter, so people try to book me over a year in advance. But I love the New England area.

I’ve been doing a lot of study into photographing women and women’s glamour, photographing women of all types of body shapes, but also providing it as an experience, with their hair and makeup done. We need to be happy with who we are and celebrate the woman and our role as mothers. Photographing a woman, making them look and feel glamorous, and photographing them so they still look like themselves is what I’m in the process of organising for women in the New England.

We can easily like bits of things ... ’ve been in Sydney: went for a Marketing Forum – then ended up staying longer than intended.

I

Sydney’s sky was, on the whole, a beautiful blue, but I hated being stuck in the traffic and then having to pay $30 for a 15 minute stay in a parking station. It was $89 for 3 hours.

Think how people complain about parking where we live … I rest my case … And I missed so much that was happening in the district. I was cross. Missed Showboat with the ADMS and the ASO ... missed UNE’s farewell to Tony Windsor, who achieved such a lot for regional Australia in such extraordinary and stressful circumstances for all Australians over these

past months. Missed the 'Sod Turning’ for New College – important for the town as well as the university. Missed … missed … missed …

Can’t leave the district for a minute!

I was just so glad to be back. The Central Mall looking good – blossoms out, people sunning themselves, the great Boobooks move to the old CBA building with a smiling Sally Rowe bustling about, the new Lily and Lotus store, pop-up shops – it all looked good. And, apparently, finally some movement with the redevelopment of Tatt’s Hotel. Mount View shopping centre was abuzz, with the new DJs – Foodie Bliss complex taking shape – the Fortnum and Mason’s of the Southern

My mother was born in Armidale; my father was born in Uralla. They’d be surprised to find me here when I‘d lived and worked in so many places around the world, but I constantly meet people who’ve come back to New England.

Elephants are reputed to never forget, aren’t they?

Uralla has an uncanny capacity to keep reinventing itself and is a great tourist stopover. One of its attractions, the fascinating McCrossins Mill, has the Joss House which always stands out for me as a reminder of what the Chinese have contributed to the district – tree clearing, vegetable growing, shop-keeping and of course, mining. Kent Mayo’s energy inspires a like-minded team of too many to mention, showcasing Uralla’s history.

Uralla attracts artists. One standout for me is Chris Ball’s Barking Dog Gallery, showing pottery and objects of true gallery standard.

The self-explanatory Wool Room is an important showcase for and source of one of the district’s most famous products. Why Worry wines, a newish business added to a famous wool producing property, shows the lateral thinking and adaptability of Australian farmers.

Quirky destinations such as Ross and Kim

Burnett’s Café Gusto (within ‘caves’ of books) make for special memories. And Uralla keeps a range of special events spicing the calendar.

Walcha is another destination with its own traditions. Home to historic fine wool and cattle properties, it has also produced an extraordinary number of nationally recognised artists and sculptors: Angus Nivison, Stephen King, Julia Griffin, Ross Laurie, Myf Gilliver and James Rogers regularly exhibit in the capitals.

Carly McLaren’s Gallery rivals its city cousins, and the stimulus that it has added to the district is incalculable. A woman firing on all cylinders, she still finds time to support husband Jock of the well-known Nurston stud as he does her – one of those rural families who seem able to live multiple lives and come up smiling.

I was cross that I missed the cracking re-launch of FROGS – Walcha’s Friends of the Open Air Gallery. The Gallery has just been recognised as a Public Art Gallery. With tax-deductible status, they are raising funds to commission a life-size bronze horse, adding ‘a major artistic statement for the town’.

Art is flowering everywhere, adding to our well-being and local pride.

Plans are being developed in Armidale for a permanent celebration of the presence of Aboriginal people over the millennia. Stories abound, like that of The Three Brothers of North Hill, South Hill and Mount Duval.

There’s a good feeling in the air.

Vicki Kembery So, I’ve just won 10 million bucks in the lottery! Not really ... a bit of wishful thinking, unfortunately. But imagine if you did and you could take a year off and travel the world. Where would you go, and what would you really want to see and do? f course, the first decision is – First or Business Class? Mmmmmm ... tough one, but hey – hang the expense. Let’s do the First Class option – after all, you’ve just won 10 million dollars! Dedicated check-in, fast track through immigration, first class lounges at airports, your own suite on-board, flat bed with pillows, blankies, duvet and PJs(!), meals prepared on board – made to order when you want to eat, and your bags are the first ones off at your destination! Now that’s travelling!

So next decision is, where do we go? And when do we go there? For this exercise I have decided I’m not going to go anywhere I’ve been before, even though I would really like to revisit some places (but hey ... I’ve got 10 million to spend, so I’ll do the re-runs next trip!)

I have the list of places I’d like to see, but can it be done in one trip, circling the world and not back-tracking? And can we work it so that I visit these places at the best time to visit in each case? I think I need a Travel Agent to help me out here …

In Asia I’d like to visit magical Burma (and maybe cruise the Irrawaddy River or Inle Lake), the home of Gross National Happiness – Bhutan, Cambodia to see the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat, and Laos, mainly to visit the world heritage listed Luang Prabang.

The best time to visit my Asian destinations is in their dry season, which for all of them is between October/November and March.

So we’ll head to Asia first and knock off Cambodia, Laos, Burma and Bhutan during the months of October and November.

In Europe I’d like to see the northern lights and perhaps spend a night in an ice hotel and try my hand at dog-sledding and catch up with Santa in Lapland – so the best time for these activities is December through to April, so it’s off to Europe next – in particular, the 36 new england focus.

Scandinavian countries of Norway, Finland and Sweden.

After Europe, I head to Africa, with my first stop being a visit to Parc des Volcans in Rwanda or Bwindi in Uganda to view the gorillas, then it’s down to Kenya and Tanzania to view the wildlife in the Serengeti, Masai Mara and Ngorongoro. The wildebeest migration pretty much occurs all year, so it’s just a matter of finding out where they’ll be around March and head to that area.

Lake Nakaru is also on my wish list, purely because I find flamingos fascinating and to see thousands of them all in one place would be fantastic.

Victoria Falls is a must when visiting Africa, and what better way to get there than on the extravagant and elegant Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa – the epitome of luxury!

In South America I’d like to go to Peru to see the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu and the weird and intriguing Nazca Lines, as well as Bolivia to see La Paz, Lake Titicaca and the fascinating salt flats of Uyuni. So, after spending a couple of months in Africa, I head across the Atlantic to South America.

June, July and August are pretty good times to visit my South American destinations, and afterwards I might head up to Cuba and Mexico and fill in some time lying on the beach and relaxing for a while.

In North America I would be travelling through the Canadian Rockies, and I’d also like to check out the grizzlies in Knights Inlet and the Polar Bears at Churchill, and October seems to be a good time to do this.

Which pretty much brings me to the end of my journey.

And the only thing this whole exercise has made me realise is – there are an awful lot of places in the world I still want to visit, and I REALLY need to win 10 million FAST!

Armidale Outdoors I often find myself wondering why I enjoy spending time outdoors; with or without the kids, it has always seemed to make sense to me to get out when I need to relax.

Being involved in an outdoor retail store has thrown a few challenges my way that I don’t fully understand. It bothers me that the majority of outdoor companies push their cheapest products without a thought to the end result.

It seems gone are the days when people were proud of the products they used and owned!

They were repaired, treasured and boasted about how old they were and how well they had served their time!

My favourite memories of camping include being entrusted as the chief of the camp fire at age 10 and being presented with the camp axe and crazy storms spent bunkered down with family and friends over hot chocolates. The first canoeing trip where we all fell out and my oldest sister famously rescued my favourite doll (I know, but it was handed down through three of us).

These are the things that I want my kids to enjoy and remember. I don’t ever remember having a bad camping experience, and I’m starting to

realise that while we never had all the must have gadgets, all the stuff we had was reliable – it did what it had to do no matter the conditions, time and time again (that same canoe still provides adventures 24 years later as a hire boat; talk about durability!) So this year with my wife by my side and backed up with the experience of my staff, we are going to commit the shop to stocking the best value products locally – not the cheapest, but those that provide true value after being used time and time again. Things like the toughest work pants we can find, tents we would be happy putting our mother-in-law in and billies so good you’ll have to keep buying more, because your mates keep pinching them!

We hope this works and that many other families will be able to take on the outdoors with their kids, knowing that we have provided them with the best advice we can give and can trust that we are only looking to deal in products that we believe in!

The Armidale Show Ground The 120th Rugby Reunion celebrations this year honours all those who have been part of this sporting tradition in the region since 1893. A packed program on the weekend of Oct 4, 5, & 6 promises to be the ultimate Rugby showcase for all to enjoy. here did the reunion idea come about?

A couple of years ago, some explayers from Armidale thought a catchup with their Rugby side from 1988 was well overdue, and planning for a 25 year reunion commenced. An invitation for a rematch with co-finalists of that year's Colts competition, Saint Alberts, was met with enthusiasm.

The planning started from this point.

By mid 2012, the reunion concept widened, as it was realised that many older clubs with a great local history (who unfortunately no longer exist) could also join in the fun. Invitations were extended to the likes of Teachers College, Armidale City, Wright College, Ebor, Uralla, Robb, Albies and United 'Dirty Ducks', to name a few.

Current Central North teams Inverell, Walcha and Tamworth have also been contacted to represent on the day. Their inclusion is relevant, as they were founding clubs in the New England zone formation of 1893.

As well as the above mentioned clubs competing, there'll be a real 'festival of Rugby flavour' added to the day, with Sevens, Women's Rugby and Barbarian style Rugby played, which will showcase the current local talent in the New England area and beyond.

The Saturday night function will be a continuation of the day's activities, with up to 12 former Wallabies from the area also attending and with a number of predominant politicians also touted to be there.

What will be happening on the weekend of the 120th Rugby Reunion?

Friday, October 4 With participants, supporters and guests flying in from all around the world as well as all states of Australia, local hoteliers will be rubbing their hands together for the October long weekend.

Fourteen former New England Wallabies will also be in attendance, with Stan Pilecki MC at the first official function for the weekend.

Saturday, October 5 Around 600 players are expected for the carnival style match day at the UNE's Bellevue Oval facility.

The carnival will feature a mix of 'original' current and former New England clubs, such as City, Wright College, Old Boys, Uralla, United, Glen Innes, Guyra, Teachers College and many more. Fifty games in all will be packed in to one day, with the NERU vs Central North U12s clash to fill the matinee time slot.

Women's Rugby featuring sides from as far afield as Waverley (Sydney) as well as Tamworth Albies and Robb are set to do battle in both 7s and 15 a side clashes during the course of the day at different intervals.

All styles of Rugby will be showcased, with Golden Oldies, Women's, Men’s Sevens, and an 1893 period costume rematch between Inverell and Armidale taking the field mid afternoon. The historical rematch was the first game ever to be played in New England back in 1893.

The final game of the day will be a UNE select XV vs a Barbarian selection XV made up of non UNE players. The UNE side will be coached

WOMEN's RUGBY HISTORY Tell us about the history of Rugby for women in the New England?

Over the years dating back to the late 1800s, there have been a number of attempts to form Rugby competitions for women. The first documented evidence to form a purely women’s team is from 1891, but was cancelled due to public outcry. In the 1930s a Women’s League was formed in the Tamworth and Armidale regions and ran until the Second World War.

1988 - The Armidale Old Boys side that won the first ever Colts grandfinal in New England at the Sports Ground will mentor the UNE’s opposition.

So Women’s Rugby does have a history in the region, and the upcoming Rugby tournament to be held in the Armidale region will help to further promote the game for women.

The tournament will be providing a variety of different styles of Rugby for men, from Sevens to Fifteens, to Golden Oldies; the women will be playing a Tens format.

Girls have been playing Rugby Union for many years in the junior ranks in local competitions, combined with the boys in a mixed comp. Unfortunately, they are then prevented from pursuing their love of Rugby by the ARU once they reach age 13, 'til 16 years and then can play with restrictions until age 18.

How is Women’s Rugby now in the New England?

Now with the formation in 2010 of a Senior Women’s 15s Competition on the North West Slopes, women and girls are showing a renewed interest in the sport.

The 2013 season saw a tapering of the sport, with the formation of various tag competitions attracting some players away. Fortunately for those that want some physicality in their sport, many are returning to the game that is played in heaven.

SAM PAYNE A former student from The Armidale School, Sam hails originally from Walcha. Moving to Sydney in the early 90s after school, Sam linked up with Eastern Surburbs RFC and moved quickly into the NSW Waratahs camp, going on to make 90 caps for the Tah’s (making him the 7th highest capped Waratah of all time). Sam played 7 times for Australia scoring 1 try.

Damian Smith 17 Jan 2013 - Former Saint Alberts college student and 1995 RWC Wallaby winger Damian Smith today confirmed his support and attendance to October’s event. Damian is considering taking the field for the Albies (2) side in the Golden Oldies competition. The ... Wallaby winger sits alongside fellow Reds team mates Tim Horan and Chris latham as 6th on the list of the most capped QLD reds players of all time having amassed 119 caps.

Damian went on to also gain 21 caps for Australia after debuting in 1993 against South Africa. His last game was in 1998 against Fiji.

Peter Phipps Peter was born in Batavia, (aka Jakarta), Java, in 1933. Peter’s mother was from Armidale originally while his father was from Sydney. Peter attended Barker College, Hornsby, from 1940 to 1950 with all his early rugby being played at Barker, reaching their 1st XV as fullback. Peter’s coach at the time was former Saint Josephs 1st XV representative and 1930 NSW Waratah Jimmy Carlton who coached Peter and reminded him to always concentrate on the basics of the game, kick with a purpose at all times, defend with conviction and back up when possible. Peter was chosen as fullback in the Combined Associated Schools 1st XV in 1950. Peter’s tertiary Education was undertaken at Hawkesbury Agricultural College from 1951 and he graduated in 1953 playing the entire three years as centre in the 1st XV team and captaining the team in 1953 (Honour Caps 1952 & 1953) Peter then played for Gordon Rugby Club, in Sydney, 46 new england focus.

Richard Tombs A former pupil of TAS, Norths player Richard Tombs was selected in the victorious Wallaby World Cup squad, but had to wait until 1992 to play his first two tests, against Scotland, at home. Tombs racked up a massive 73 caps for the Waratahs as a centre and 5 tests for the Wallabies between 1992 and 1996.

Richard also played for Brisbane first grade club Souths Magpies and finished his career in 2000 at English club Gloucester where he ran on 56 times.

Fletcher was in the starting XV at F S Stadium Australia in 2000 for one of the best rugby games ever played between the Wallabies and the Allblacks.

Fletcher Dyson 14 Jan2013 - Former Queensland and Wallaby Prop, Fletcher Dyson has today confirmed that he will be running around on the park for Wright College in October. Wright College is Fletchers former UNE club side. Fletcher was in the starting XV at Stadium Australia in 2000 for one of the best rugby games ever played between the Wallabies and the Allblacks.

with whom his two elder brothers were playing and in 1954 was chosen in the Gordon 1st grade side with brother Jim and eldest brother John.

1955 was Peter’s best year and he was chosen to play for ‘ North of the Harbour’, City Colts, then NSW against Queensland, in which both him and his brother Jim played. The Australian team was announced with Peter and Jim both named in the 1955 team to tour NZ. He represented NSW also in 1956 against Queensland. Peter ended his playing days just before the trials for the British Isles trip in 1957, playing for Gordon, Peter broke his back during a Sydney club game, spending 6 months in a plaster cast, enduring a spinal fusion then learning to walk again. A further 18 months of rehab followed. Peter was married with one child at that stage. Peter came to Armidale in 1965 to be the pastoral manager for the then Governor General, Viscount Lord D’Lisle’s three properties in the Armidale District. One property on the Eastern side in the Black Mountain area.

One on the West side in the Booralong and one close to Armidale city. Peter assumed the positions of president, selector and coach of the New England Zone, club sides and schools as well as refereeing the local schools and rep sides. He hosted the French R.U. National Side in Armidale in 1972 with their clash against NSW country at Armidale Rugby League Park and notes that Ken McConville was secretary of the Zone during those times.

Peter took up coaching, refereeing, club and zone interests from 1965 until 1978 in Armidale.

Peter Horton was capped 19 times between 1974 and 1979. He has represented St Lukes College, Surrey, South of England, Armidale College (TC), NSW Country, NSW, Australia and moved to Brisbane in 1977 where his club side was Teachers / Norths.

He has also played for Queensland and remains one of the supreme scrummages in Australian rugby history. He moved to Armidale in 1975 and taught physical education at TAS. Peter Horton is now a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education and Fellow low of the Cairns Institute. He has taught in schools and universities in the UK, Australia, China and Singapore.

He has a range of research interests focusing on the social, cultural and political analysis of historical and contemporary dimensions of sport, Olympism, coach education and Health and Physical Education. He is a member of editorial boards of the International Journal of the History of Sport and International Sport Studies.

He played Rugby union football for the ‘Wallabies’ and has coached extensively; a life member of the Australian Society for Sports History, a member of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and, not surprisingly, remains a sports tragic. Hugh Rose Hugh was a backrow forward who represented Australia against all the major rugby nations between 1967 and 1970. From Walcha originally, he schooled at Kings Parramatta and had three years in the 1st XV with his last two years playing GPS 1st’s alongside the likes of John Brass. He played for Robb College between 1965 and 1968 and at age 18, appeared for NSW country. Rose played for NSW in the following year and in 1967, began his international career against Ireland in Sydney with matches against NZ and France to follow. Hugh toured overseas in 1968-69 with games against Ireland and Scotland and returned home to play Wales in Sydney with a 4x match tour of South Africa 6 weeks later. He ended his test career in 1970 with a win over Scotland in Sydney.

A leading forward in the 70s, Glen was an interesting player who began his career with Eastern Suburbs in Sydney as a centre. When Easts needed big forwards in 1966, they moved Eisenhauer who stood at 6ft3” into the pack, using him both in the 2nd row and at No. 8 and his utility value benefited the touring teams greatly. Eisenhauer moved from easts to Cowra, then to Armidale, and from 1970 he represented NSW Country against Scotland, South Africa, Tonga, New Zealand and Japan. He became a Wallaby when he was included in the 1975-76 tour of Britain and North America, and returned to Europe for the 10-match tour of France and Italy towards the end of 1976.

A tall country winger from the Armidale city club who made representative honours in 1967 when progressing through representative country rugby to the state team to play in the first historic test match against Tom Kiernan’s touring Irish side.

Ric represented Wright College from 1963-1966 during which time they were three times premiers of the NERU. In 1967 he joined Armidale City and represented that club until 1973, being selected for both New England and NSW Country teams for many of those years. In 1967 and again in 1972 he represented NSW and was the Secretary of the NERU in 1970 and 1971.

Greg Cornelsen Greg played Australian School Boys Rugby in 1969. The team toured South Africa at the invitation of Danie Craven. Greg was one of two boys selected in this team from The Armidale School Armidale. The other was Brian Hayward.

Cornelsen made his international debut for Australia at just 21 years of age, when the Wallabies took on the All Blacks in 1974 in Brisbane, which resulted in a 16-all draw. He was subsequently capped in the following match in Sydney, in which the All Blacks won 16 to 6. He next played for Australia against Japan in Brisbane, which the Wallabies won 50 to 25. Over the following two seasons, he played in matches against Scotland, Wales, England and France. All were in Europe and the Wallabies had a tougher time winning.

In 1978, Cornelsen played two matches against the Welsh in Australia, both of which the Wallabies won. After the Welsh wins, the Wallabies faced the All Blacks in a three test series. After Australia lost the opening two matches in Wellington and Christchurch, the Australians faced a 3-0 whitewash if they lost the final game at Eden Park in Auckland. In one of Cornelsen’s greatest moments, he scored four tries in the third test, seeing Australia through to a 30 to 16 victory, as well as ending a long drought of losses against the Kiwis. He was also the first forward from any country to score four tries in a major Test (i.e., involving two traditional top-tier nations) since 1881, and to this day remains the only Wallabies forward with four tries in a Test.[1] The following

year he played another five tests for Australia, the first of which were two losses against Ireland at home, though the Wallabies then went onto defeat the All Blacks again, at home in Sydney.

Cornelsen also played in the two tests against Argentina in Buenos Aires. The series was tied 1 game each. In 1980 the Wallabies hosted the All Blacks for a three tests series. Australia entered the third game with the series at 1-all, winning the final game 26 to 10 in Sydney. Cornelsen was then capped against Ireland, Wales and Scotland in 1981 in Europe. In 1982 his long test career came to a close at the home of English rugby at Twickenham where the Wallabies played the English.

With the coming changes to the way in which disability and community aged care services will be managed and funded through Disability Care Australia and changes to State Government funding arrangements, we have tremendous opportunity to be even more flexible and focused on an even more person centred approach. As Disability Care Australia will not roll out in the New England until nearer to 2018, we have the time to really focus on developing people’s awareness and skills in preparation for this new and monumental social change. The Community Kitchen Carers Week Luncheon Carers play a pivotal role in providing quality support to older people, people with disability and people with mental illness. Although caring for someone is very rewarding, it is not always easy, and it comes at a cost. Carers have poorer health and wellbeing than non-carers. They also have reduced opportunities to work and gain financial security.

To recognise and celebrate our valued carers, Armidale Dumaresq Council, New England Medicare Local & Alzheimer’s Australia NSW, Carer Assist and integratedliving Australia are hosting a Carers Week Luncheon. integratedliving Australia is an innovative, not-for-profit community business delivering quality home care for older people, disability support, respite and telehealth services at your home.

Meet Mattie Ho How long have you lived in the area?

I have lived in Armidale for 17 years now. My German accent will always give me away, though. It has always been attractive for me to be in Armidale, because of so many people being from all over the world creating an open and inclusive community. As a multicultural family, we fit right in.

What do you specialise in?

I have worked as a Counsellor in the Armidale community for eight years now. My training has given me a fantastic base for working with people in rural communities. I have done a lot of work with clients who struggle with mental health issues, relationship problems and trauma. My work focuses on the emotional or mental patterns which often prevent a person from living the life they really want to live.

Personal rewards that you gain from your business?

Seeing people grow and change is incredibly rewarding. To be able to witness my clients’ transformation from being stuck and often ill to starting to create a rich and meaningful life is the most fulfilling experience for me.

Plans for the future?

I want Life Connect Counselling to grow into a thriving service for our community. It is important for people to realise that counselling helps as much as physio, healthy eating and exercising … and to talk about it!

Carers Week Caring for someone can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be stressful, difficult or lonely.

Centacare New England North West provides FREE short term counselling to carers, through the Carers NSW Carer Counselling Program.

Carers are able to access up to six sessions with a fully qualified and registered psychologist or counsellor in a way that suits them – face to face, phone, or via videoconference.

Centacare NENW has an understanding and non-judgemental team, ready to support carers and their families across the region.

Centacare psychologist Rhonda Partridge says it’s important for carers to recognise their role and look after themselves.

“Often carers don’t see themselves as carers – to them what they’re doing is just part of being Dad or Mum, or another member of the family or friendship network – but they need support and understanding too!”

Katrina George “At times they may feel angry, depressed or anxious –feelings that are common when you’re tired, under pressure, or often putting someone else’s needs ahead of your own.” ”Family and friends can be great sounding boards and very supportive, but sometimes we need to talk to someone who isn’t emotionally involved or connected to our family and worries,” added Mrs Partridge.

Counselling can also help carers build their own resilience and wellbeing, make sense of their role, and work on tools to handle stress and conflict.

Thursday 28 August, Mayor Jim Maher officially launched the refurbished Visitor Information Centre. It was a wonderful occasion that has been well publicised on Prime News, in The Armidale Express, The Armidale Independent and on local radio. e had the pleasure of hosting 60 people for the launch and morning tea, and we would like to thank all of the people who were able to attend this exciting event.

We extend an invitation to all Armidale residents to come and visit the refurbished centre and see what the Visitor Information Centre has to offer.

In addition to extensive information on Armidale, New England High Country and surrounding areas, we have a lovely selection of local New England products for sale, including two new lines, Sister Spice from Guyra and Sunhill Goat products from Uralla.

This month we will be commencing a small facelift of the coach station area, with new flooring, a fresh coat of paint and some wonderful Experience the Highs campaign imagery.

This month Armidale Tourism launched its Spring Promotion, an online marketing campaign promoted through Facebook and other online social media channels. As part of the Experience the Highs campaign, this initiative will actively promote our region and local businesses, whilst creating awareness of the extensive attractions New England High Country has to offer.

Saumarez Homestead is one of the many attractions that have re-opened now that we have farewelled winter. They are open for tours on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays at 10.30am, 2pm and 3.30pm. Weeping Rock Walk in New England National Park is a ‘must do’ experience for all locals and visitors to the region. Native wildlife, especially echidnas, are out and about and Gara Gorge is a fabulous area for spotting platypus playing in the water. The Armidale Visitor Information Centre has a comprehensive list of bushwalks in the region detailing distance, difficulty level and expected completion time.

Wayward Jerseys Farmstay has commenced operating day tours from 9am – noon, where families have the opportunity to feed a variety of animals including poddy piglets and calves, goats, sheep and horses. They also provide a farm walk and tour and an opportunity to feed hay to paddock cows. The cost for a family is $75 including morning tea. The tour finishes at approximately noon, and guests will have an option to purchase a picnic hamper or BBQ pack and have a picnic lunch on the property.

Fossicking for gold is a great activity for children (and adults) of all ages. Fossicking pans can be hired from the Uralla Visitor Information Centre, and from there you can visit either Rocky River or the Woolridge Recreation Reserve. Additionally, these areas also provide natural swimming holes for children to enjoy in the warmer weather.

The office of Notary Public developed from the activities of scribes, until Notaries became independent officers. A Notary’s certificate and seal are awarded recognition internationally as a public act in the same way as a document under the seal of a Court. Since January 1986, the appointment of Notaries in New South Wales has been made by the Supreme Court in accordance with provisions contained in the Public Notaries Act 1997 (No. 98). The suitability for appointment, however, is determined by the Legal Profession Admission Board, which has made rules for the appointment of Notaries.

In some ways, the office of a Notary has many similar roles to that of a Justice of the Peace (JP).

So what do each of these appointments do, and how are they different?

What is a Justice of the Peace?

A JP plays an essential part in the legal system and in the community of NSW. Unlike the office of a Notary Public, it is not necessary for JPs to be legally qualified, and they are not entitled to charge fees for service. Two of the main functions of JPs are to witness the signing and execution of documents such as statutory declarations and affidavits and to certify copies of documents. The conduct of a JP is subject to the Code of Conduct for Justices of the Peace in NSW. Failure of a JP to comply with the Code of Conduct can result in loss of office or review.

Dishonesty or failure to fulfil statutory obligations can result in legal proceedings being brought against a JP in negligence. In Graham v Hall & 1 [2006] NSWCA 208 for example, a JP was sued for damages for alleging to have witnessed the signature of another when not in that person’s presence.

The Australian Federal Government does not appoint JPs, which is regulated by the states.

The duties and appointment of JPs in NSW are regulated through the Justices of the Peace Act 2002 and the Justices of the Peace Regulation 2003. What is the difference between a JP and a

Notary Public?

A Notary Public in NSW must be admitted to the Supreme Court of NSW and have not less than 5 years’ experience as a legal practitioner. Additional notarial practice training is required and, once appointed, Notaries are entitled to charge fees for their services.

As a guide, the NSW Society of Notaries publishes a recommended scale of fees each year. The current recommended scale is applied at Legal Minds and can be viewed at http://notary.zfweb. net/fees_scale In addition to all of the functions of a JP, a Notary is required to have the combined legal experience to draw up formal certificates and to notarise, verify, certify and authenticate documents that can be recogised throughout the world, such as debentures, affidavits for use in Court proceedings in other countries, powers of attorney, estate matters, confirming identity of individuals and even ships protests. A Notary is identified by their registered signature and their Notarial seal. When documents are notarised, a certificate drafted and executed by the Notary is sewn onto the copy of the document with a ribbon. A wafer is placed over the ends of the ribbon and sealed with an embosser.

The certificate can then not be removed unless either the paper is torn, the ribbon is cut, or, the seal is broken. This process ensures that a document is secure. A stapled certificate is not accepted by DFAT or for other notarial purposes.

To ensure recognition of the Notary’s signature and seal, registration is made with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

This is an important process, as some countries, like Australia, are contracting States to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 and instead of having to have public documents legalised by individual countries, documents can be sealed with an Apostille by DFAT. In those countries that are not a Convention country, individual Consulates are required to be consulted on specific arrangements for those countries, which can in some cases be more complex and expensive.

Within our social and business community the role and responsibility of JPs and Notaries are an important function to ensure the authenticity and certification of documents, to keep our day to day local and international business transactions moving.

The Armidale Dumaresq Council recently revealed the new look Armidale Tourism Information Centre ...

ow and why was the decision made to refurbish the Armidale Tourist Information Centre?

One of the outcomes of Armidale Dumaresq Council’s review on the delivery of visitor information services was the need to update the Visitor Information Centre. It is fair to say that after twenty years it was in need of a makeover to bring the Centre in line with current trends and requirements of visitors.

Clearly there are massive demands placed on Council funds, and the decision by Councillors to allocate a $50,000 budget to refurbish the Visitor Information Centre sends a clear message as to their perceived importance of the visitor economy to Armidale. Visitors come to Armidale for a variety of reasons; the role of the Visitor Information Centre is to provide relevant, current and accurate information across a wide spectrum of subjects. Whether it be someone working in town trying to find an address, parents of a UNE student in town for Graduation, or a couple travelling the New England Highway needing overnight accommodation, the Visitor Information Centre is, for many, their first port

How will the centre help in Council’s new marketing plan?

Council is now in year two of implementing its 10 Year Tourism Strategy. Perhaps the most recognisable asset is the campaign’s brand – Experience the Highs. Launched in June 2012 with the new visitor guide, web site and iPad app, the campaign has gathered a momentum which is now bearing fruit. The iPad app, now also available for iPhone, won an Australian Mobile Award (Mobie) in 2012, and Armidale was listed by Australian Traveller magazine in its Top 100 Incredible Travel Secrets of Australia. The magazine listing reads, “Not just NSW’s city of churches” Armidale is recognised for “food and wine, and adventure activities (mountain biking, canyoning and rock climbing)”.

When working through the design ideas for the refurbishment, Experience the Highs provided the answer. The Visitor Information Centre is now campaign headquarters sporting the campaign colours and branding, which have complete synergy with the collateral handed out to visitors.

First impressions are critical and as the first contact point for many visitors, the centre staff and volunteers shoulder the responsibility.

The newly refurbished centre now supports Armidale’s reputation as a cosmopolitan, educated, university city of which its locals are very proud.

Were local tradesmen employed for the refurb?

Absolutely! Andrew Strudwick, Council’s Property Manager, looked after the contracts and worked to bring a grand vision to reality.

Anyone who has carried out a major ‘reno’ at home will appreciate the importance of working with the tradesmen. At the outset there was the task of breaking up the old quarry tile floor; a couple of days on a jack hammer marked the real beginning. From that point on the builders, carpenters, plasterers, cabinet makers, electricians and flooring contractors all worked together and, what’s more, were happy to oblige where changes were requested!

Those who call in to the Centre are now commenting on the light and airy space created and the stunning photography displayed. The

How important are the volunteers? Who are they?

There is no question about it, the volunteers working at the Visitor Information Centre and on the Armidale Heritage Tour are critical. They give their time generously, put up with the noise during the refurbishment and worked hard to get the Centre up and running again. It is difficult to name them all; however, anyone who takes the trouble to call in to the Centre will receive a warm welcome! They are all passionate about Armidale and in ensuring visitors enjoy their stay; one cannot really ask for more!

Plans for the future?

As stated previously, this is only year two of a ten year strategy. A solid foundation has been laid, it is now a case of building on that, sticking to the plan and kicking the goals. But don’t forget, we should all play a part in promoting our city.

lease give us some history on how the school first began?

In the late '80s early '90s there was a big push towards mainstreaming students with mild to moderate disabilities. As a result of this, the then Mirimbeena School for Specific Purposes (SSP) would have diminished in size and the remaining students with severe disabilities would have been left in a very isolated setting. The staff and particularly the parents at the time, basically didn’t want this for their children, so they embarked on pursuing the transformation of the SSP into an inclusive mainstream school. As a result, Sandon PS was established in 1993.

How does Sandon differ to other schools?

All schools are unique, but probably what makes Sandon special is our distinctive history and the complex mix of students enrolled. (20% Indigenous, 15% students with disabilities both in mainstream classes and our special education unit, and 20 different nationalities represented also). Difference is the seamless norm at

Sandon, and as a result our students learn how to value and respect difference while at the same time, learn how to include, nurture and support one another.

As well, the staff, parents and carers who are part of our school community are just amazing in the way they work so hard and daily give of their best for the children in our care. There is such generosity of spirit at Sandon, and I believe this is born out of our unique history.

How does the school plan to celebrate 20 years?

We are going to have a special assembly, inviting both past and present students, staff and parents on Friday 11 October. We are also going to have a BBQ lunch during the day, with one or two other surprises. As well, we will have a tour of the school displaying how it has grown and changed over the 20 years. Later that evening we are having a celebratory dinner at the Bowling Club, to which all past and present staff and families are invited.

Memorable moments at Sandon ...

Over a 20 year history there are many memorable moments that have become part of our school history (both happy and also sad) … but of note is just how proud we are to have continued to strengthen the founding philosophy of the school, which is – our commitment to inclusion and equity and access for all students to a quality education, regardless of cultural background, disability or socioeconomic status. At Sandon there is a deep and abiding belief that all students can learn, and the remarkable teaching and support staff work each day to make this a reality. At Sandon we don’t see difference; we see children.

Tell us about your staff ...

There are about 35 staff working in the school on any one day. These comprise temporary, permanent and part-time teachers and school learning and support officers (some of whom have been at the school since its establishment in 1993), as well as our admin and ground personnel. Peter Pickett was the first principal of the school, and it has been my privilege to

have been leading the school since 2005. All members of the Sandon PS staff show enormous dedication and commitment to our children.

The overall tone in the school is exceptionally positive and professional, and all members of staff are outstanding ambassadors of public education.

Why should you consider sending your child to Sandon Public School?

This question is best answered by the parents/ carers and students themselves, who have chosen Sandon as their preferred school. We know our reputation in the wider community is very positive. ut think of what a birth certificate actually means – an official identity, the ability to access a passport, a driver’s licence, a bank account, a tax file number and the right to work. And imagine the limitations placed on someone who has none of these things.

Have you ever stopped to consider the value of your birth certificate? While it is one of the first things most of us ever own, a birth certificate is something many of us take for granted – a piece of paper forgotten in the back of a filing cabinet somewhere.

In 2009, a group of UNE students from the entrepreneurial group Enactus delved into a project to assist indigenous students from Minimbah Primary School with their financial literacy skills and open bank accounts.

They soon realised that many of the children did not have a birth certificate, and were therefore unable to open an account.

The UNE students discovered that not having a birth certificate is not altogether uncommon – up to 1.5% of Australia’s total population has never had their birth registered.

From here, the Minimbah Project was born, and more than 1,200 people have had their births registered through the project. The UNE Enactus Team, part of the international Enactus community, are now working towards ensuring that all Australians are provided with birth certificates, automatically and free of charge.

The Minimbah Project is gaining national momentum, with governmental representatives and State Attorneys’ General Departments expressing interest in finding national solutions. The Enactus Team has helped put the issue of non-birth registration firmly on the national agenda, and will continue lobbying for a National Partnership Agreement with all states and territories at the next Council of Australian Governments Meeting in 2014.

The issue of indigenous birth registration in Australia has been included in reports to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, a clear indicator of just how important

this project is.

The work of the UNE Enactus Team, which started at Minimbah Primary School, is about to gain worldwide attention. In July, with the Minimbah Project and two others of equally impressive breadth, the UNE team beat 21 other universities to take out the Enactus Australia Championships in Sydney. They are now off to this year’s World Cup in Cancun, Mexico from September 29 October 1.

The Enactus Community brings together some of the brightest students, academics and business leaders from around the world to show how the power of entrepreneurial action can transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.

In Mexico, the UNE Team will also be presenting their Fin-Lit project, which is the continuation of the original initiative to increase financial literacy among indigenous school students.

The third project, Farming Futures, is designed to address looming food shortages by improving graduate employment opportunities in the rural sector. Despite a shortage of skilled agricultural workers, only one in three rural graduates work in the sector. Farming Futures holds annual networking dinners and an annual career fair and have recently initiated programs in schools to inform students about career pathways in agriculture.

The international recognition which the UNE Enactus Team will receive in Mexico is the result of years of dedication, involving several generations of students, staff and community mentors. Team President, Rachel Price, said that the team has put in over 5,300 hours in the past year, raising just under $115,000 and positively impacting on the lives of thousands of people.
