Welcome to the February edition of New England FOCUS. he first three weeks in 2013 were very hot, with record high temperatures.

Last weekend I sat at home whinging about the heat when, thank goodness, perspective prevailed, and my thoughts turned to the poor souls caught up in the bush fires.

T

ell us about the tragedy that happened to Patty Garrett?

Patty and his father, Steve, were heading home after work on 1 November 2012, when he was struck in the head by a rock through his car windscreen, which was thrown from an oncoming vehicle.

At the same time, New England Police and highway patrol officers were pursuing an allegedly stolen vehicle along the Guyra-Ebor Rd. Police allege the occupants of the vehicle, four men and a woman from Queensland, threw rocks at oncoming traffic in a bid to force the Police to cease pursuit. The case went to court again on 21 January 2013.

Patty was seriously injured as a result of the incident. He had to be airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital due to his critical condition and extensive head injuries.

He underwent major surgery, which included removing fifteen bone fragments from his brain and was then placed in a medically induced coma. He was later transferred from ICU into the Neurology ward and then several weeks later, once his condition improved, he was moved to Tamworth Base Hospital for rehabilitation.

Is Patty recovering well?

The month leading into Christmas was probably the hardest time in the Garrett family’s life; however, they sat, as a family, by Patty’s bedside for weeks on end, not leaving his side. Medical staff believes this contributed significantly to the extent of Patty’s recovery. Needless to say, the Garrett’s were ‘stoked’ when they were told he’d be home for Christmas.

Patty’s in good spirits and will resume rehabilitation in January.

How did the Garrett Family Appeal come to fruition?

It was a community initiative. Local tradies,

businesses and friends all came together the moment they heard about Patty's horrific encounter.

A formal appeal was established, thanks to the support of the Guyra Rotary Club, who allowed the appeal to run through their organisation.

Sadly, gone are the days of placing a tin on the counter. Guyra New England Mutual also ensured an appeal account was set up promptly, offering people a convenient way to give from the privacy of their home or office.

Describe the mountain bike ride ...

We finished the appeal on a fabulous note, with Greig Stier’s initiative for a mountain bike ride from Armidale to Guyra. This was a morning we’ll never forget, with over 70+ riders taking part from Armidale (including riders from Walcha and elsewhere – thank you!) and walkers setting the pace at the crack of dawn ... not to mention all those who joined in from the Black Mountain village. Children even got involved, with the youngest rider being 6 years of age. It seemed age was no limit when it came to support.

The ride ran smoothly and safely thanks to the wonderful involvement of the Police and the VRA. Everyone was able to enjoy breakfast on the house at the finish line, which seemed to breed further generosity amongst the crowd. It was humbling and emotional to be a part of, resulting in several items being donated and auctioned, raffles being sold out, and concluding in an astonishing $7,000 raised.

Who were the standout supporters and why?

Everyone who 'gave' stood out in our eyes. It is always amazing who gives.

Australia’s most celebrated netballer and now a media personality, Liz Ellis (AM) will visit Armidale next month, as special guest of the PLC Armidale Foundation. We chat with Liz about her successes and what she will be doing at PLC Armidale. he New England area and Armidale in particular, holds a special place in your heart, Liz. Have you any stories you can share?

Armidale is where I met my now husband Matthew Stocks, who is a former NSW Waratah rugby player and Australian Under 21 rugby representative. We were both coaching at the National Sports Camps at the University of New England in the early 1990s. We shared a lot of great times in Armidale and have some fabulous memories from the rugby and netball camp days. As for stories ... what goes on tour will always stay on tour, as they say! However, we always look forward to visiting when we can, as we have made some wonderful friendships from the Sports Camps.

What brings you to Armidale this time?

I have been invited by Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC) Armidale Foundation to be the special guest at this year’s Successful Women’s Seminar on Wednesday 6 March. After the community networking lunch, I have been asked to present the keynote address on the topic of ‘Balancing Ambition In All Courts’. I will also conduct a coaching clinic for aspiring PLC netballers in the morning. I am really looking forward to liaising with the PLC and Armidale communities at this annual event.

The Liz Ellis story is what little girls dream of: to play netball for their country, achieve a successful career and enjoy the rewards of a wonderful family. You have achieved so much on and off the court in your short 40 years. What is your most memorable achievement?

That’s easy – my beautiful daughter, Evelyn.

Becoming a mum is one of the hardest – and most rewarding – things I have ever done.

My most memorable netball achievement was captaining Australia to victory in the 2007 World Championships final – which was my last ever game.

Actually, I am still trying to work it out, if the truth is known. It’s simply a matter of being disciplined in how I manage my time.

I am also very fortunate to have an exceptionally supportive husband and family close by. I love to cook to unwind after a big day, but my most favourite relaxation is spending time with Evelyn and Matthew. Evelyn particularly enjoys the water, so I am spending a lot of the summer, so far, in our pool with her!

Liz, your extraordinary commitment to many and varied off-court pursuits, together with your amazing netball achievements will never cease to impress. You continue to be an inspiration to our generation and those that follow ... both women and men.

e Dave: Much has changed in the 20 years since the last trial match was hosted in Armidale: the pace of the game, the pressure on players, and a much larger fan base, particularly through the influence of TV and social media.

When Armidale hosts major sporting events, the community really gets behind them. In 2012 they came out in large numbers to support the event, and we are hoping this year is even bigger.

We believe that the Eels’ visit will show the great value of sport as a bridge to educational opportunity, and also, how a university initiative can benefit the entire community.

There are more than 2,000 tickets already sold for the game, and visitors are coming from around the region and beyond. There’s talk of buses coming from Moree, Gunnedah and surrounding areas, and these visitors may stay for a few days. The impact on tourism in the town will be substantial, with visitors eating, sleeping and shopping here in Armidale.

UNE is a strong advocate of tourism in Armidale.

Its sporting events and activities based on campus have brought an estimated $14.1 million dollars into our local community over the past 5 years.

Jim: We see the UNE/Eels relationship as important, not only to UNE, but to all of the Armidale community. It offers both UNE and Armidale new exposure on a national level, highlighting our excellent sporting facilities and the beautiful New England region as a tourism destination and educational centre.

UNE’s connection with the Eels will be further strengthened this year, when we open our first ‘Future Campus’ in Parramatta to service the large number of Distance Education students we have in the Western Sydney region.

I know the Armidale community will make the Parramatta Eels players and staff feel welcome during their stay, and I hope the training camp sets them up for a successful season in 2013.

A NEW team is building on the success of the NEGS Equestrian Centre, with aims to further consolidate its reputation as the leading school equestrian facility in the nation. We talk to Equine Director Brett Davey and Equestrian Centre Manager Sally Reed about their roles and vision.

rett, firstly tell us about where you grew up and your introduction to horses.

I grew up in between Newcastle and Maitland and attended Hunter Valley Grammar School before heading to Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, where I studied exercise science and business.

Since then I have been running my own business in the Hawkesbury region, where I have been teaching, training horses and breaking in horses. I got my first pony at the age of 2 with the influence from my family – mainly Dad, who has been associated with showjumping for many years, including judging at an Olympic Games and officiating at a World Cup Final.

You are also a NCAS Level 1 instructor, a former national young rider dressage champion and have competed and produced horses to Grand Prix dressage level. That’s quite an achievement for someone still in their 20s! What have been particular career highlights?

Brett Davey: I was fortunate enough to be a member of the inaugural National Young Rider Squad and was a member for 8 consecutive years. In that time I was lucky enough to represent Australia throughout the country and in America and NZ. Winning the Pacific Challenge here in Australia against the best riders from 6 different countries and taking horses to NZ and winning the Trans Tasman trophy against the Kiwis on their soil were pretty exciting times. More recently, having success eventing at all the major international events throughout the country.

I understand you have previously coached school equestrian teams for Abbotsleigh in Sydney and St Stanislaus in Bathurst?

The management of the Equestrian Centre involves arranging the day to day lesson requirements and organising both junior and senior school girls to attend competitions, as well as providing lessons for children and adults outside NEGS. Our instructors run twilight show jumping and cross country training on Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week, which is open to all interested riders.

We have over 50 school and privately agisted horses here, so excellent horse management is very important to us.

I guess the next really big event at the centre is the NEGS One Day Event to be held on March 16-17, that is bound to again attract Olympic riders. What other things have you got planned?

Sally Reed: We are very excited about our next event, and we hope to build on the huge success of the first event held in October last year. We were very lucky to have attracted Stuart Tinney and hope to have a number of other previous Olympic riders come to our March event. We will have entertainment and trade stalls once again. We would warmly invite potential sponsors to make contact with us to obtain a sponsorship package.

Of course, the Equestrian Centre is used not just by NEGS but other groups. Who are some of the community groups that use the facility, and how can people learn more about what is available?

Sally Reed: The Equestrian Centre has been used by many other equestrian groups, but also used for the New England Unhoused Ram Sale and a variety of different horse riding clinics. We would be more than happy to discuss the needs of particular community groups should they wish to hire the facility.

GAP YEAR IN ENGLAND

Holly Sozou has just returned home after spending her Gap Year in Dorset, England. She tells us that she did work experience at Leweston Boarding School, a school very similar to PLC .

She also mentions seeing Her Majesty The Queen.

ell us about your upbringing in Armidale?

I have lived in Armidale all my life, where I attended PLC from transition to Year 12. I had some of the best years of my life at PLC, and I’m missing school more and more every day. In 2011, I completed my HSC; I was happy with my mark, which will enable me to get into the course I want.

How does an under 18 PLC student manage to obtain work as a Boarding House Mistress in Dorset, England?

After a busy year with my HSC, the last thing I felt like was going straight into university.

The idea of a Gap Year while working at a boarding school in England and travelling has always appealed to me. So with the support and encouragement from my parents, I started organising this huge trip to go overseas.

However, it wasn’t as easy as I thought.

Firstly I had to apply to schools as a Gap student. My first offer was from a boarding school called Leweston, based in the area of Dorset in a town called Sherborne. After doing some research into the school, I was happy to accept my offer.

I wasn’t going to be 18 until March the following year, so I couldn’t obtain a normal working visa; I had to obtain a charity visa. This consisted of long, confusing hours filling out paperwork and even a journey to Brisbane to get one minute’s worth of finger prints – much to my dad’s dislike: “We travelled six hours just for this!” Before I knew it, I had my visa and January 1st had come up all too quickly.

When it came to saying goodbye, I had a large range of mixed emotions – from being very scared and sad to be saying goodbye to my friends and family, to where I was so excited to start this big, exciting journey.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Leweston School, and how does it compare with your own school, PLC? Leweston was very similar to PLC, being an all girls primary and secondary boarding school, and the sizing was also very similar. However, working as a staff member rather then a student I did find some big differences, as I was instructing students what to do, rather then being told what to do. The lifestyle was also very different. As I was only a day girl at PLC, I experienced the life of boarding, which was living constantly at school.

Some of my most favourite experiences at Leweston were that overall I was lucky to be able to look after very genuine and down to earth girls, and I formed a great friendship with the students, which made it difficult saying goodbye. Another highlight was that this year was not only the year of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, but also England was hosting the Olympics. Throughout England all year there was a great atmosphere.

The Queen made a visit to Sherborne on one occasion to celebrate her Jubilee, so as a school we went down to see her visit the town centre.

This was a very special occasion for me; I even pulled out the Aussie flag, while everyone else was waving the Union Jack.

I also did sailing once a week with the students. This meant travelling down to Weymouth every Monday. Weymouth is where the Olympic sailing was held, so I got to see some of the Olympians training.

What were some of your jobs at Leweston School?

I had a range of duties. I was mainly needed as a housemistress in Junior house, which consisted of girls aged 8 -12. I had to wake the girls up every morning and get them ready for school and look after them at night. In

How do I get started on an exercise program?

It is never too late to get started, but obviously the earlier you start the more benefits you gain. We offer a diverse range of classes and programs for all ages and fitness levels, including first timers. Our members range in age from 15 years old to those well into their 80s.

We have free gym accreditations and starter programs for members to familiarise themselves with the use of the equipment, both cardio and resistance. What are the best ways to stay motivated?

ow long have you lived and worked in this region?

My wife and I moved to Armidale in 2009. We had been living in Dorrigo and when work dried up, Em wanted to take the opportunity to move closer to her family.

We found a place out of town so we could bring our sheep with us – a small flock who are mostly pets. Since moving to Armidale we have started our family. We now have 2 beautiful daughters: Genevieve is 20 months old and Eleanor is 2 months old.

Tell us about your business?

I was searching for an opportunity to make the most of my digital marketing experience as soon as I moved to Armidale; however, these things can take time – especially sourcing the right resources. About 12 months ago, an opportunity presented itself with a local talented developer who had my outlook, which is that technology too often becomes a toy, or a ‘me too’, rather than a business tool.

We do offer all the traditional services such as website development, hosting, domain registration etc. However, these are treated as tools rather than products – in the same way that your local builder won't try to sell you a new deck by showing you all the tools in the back of his truck.

We try to keep the technological jargon out of the conversation and focus on the business outcomes. We focus on what we can save, or make our clients in terms of time, money or new customers.

With this in mind, we have joined the Google

Engage for Agencies program. We are the first business in regional NSW to gain this certification, and it gives us the ability to make our customers easy to find online; which is where all their customers are looking!

Why do you believe a lot of regional businesses are yet to go online?

I think this comes down to a time/money versus reward problem. Many businesses have dipped their toe in the water with very little outcome: did you know that almost 90% of websites get almost no traffic? Many more businesses are worried a website will cost them thousands of dollars and require constant time and effort which they don’t have.

We have worked with many businesses that previously spent thousands of dollars on their website, only to get a couple of visitors per month – the biggest problem being that people could only find their site if they already knew of the business and generally, they were already customers! So with a website like this, there is no ROI, and and pretty soon the word gets out that websites are a money pit. We've turned these businesses around for a fraction of the cost they originally spent, and I think a few more local success stories like these will make a huge difference pretty quickly!

How are online businesses doing better in comparison to those yet to go online?

Well as an example, we work with an Agribusiness in town that with a little optimisation and an Adwords Campaign went from an average of 2 visits to their website per week to over 400.

Another customer of ours has gone from a

basic web presence, which was just a couple of pages with their logo and contact details, to a full web store providing the equivalent of a week's sales in their retail outlet every month.

I don’t think there are any businesses out there that wouldn’t like more leads for their services, or more sales of their products!

What does it take to put a business online?

I think the most important thing is to have a clear understanding of your business identity and from there to define why you want to get online. Do you want more customers to your store? Do you need to provide existing customers with additional information/help/support to keep them loyal? Do you want to sell things online; if so, what makes your products or your business stand out? What level of input do you want to have in putting your business online? What are the desired outcomes, the break even points and success milestones you are aiming for?

We like to work with businesses to answer as many of these questions as possible and then tailor a solution to their needs. With some businesses, this involves establishing an SEO framework and then handing over the site for them to add content and provide updates.

For other businesses, we run their marketing initiatives, managing all of their online and offline marketing communications at a fraction of the cost of hiring a marketing expert to work for you full time.

How do you offer effective advertising solutions?

Through Google Adwords, we are able to offer advertising to your specific market in the places they are looking. Did you know that over 90% of internet searches and over 98% of mobile searches in Australia are done through Google? And of course, most people jump on the computer, or pick up their smartphone when searching for a product or service, rather than picking up a book.

The other advantage is the targeting; everyone knows you can focus in on people searching for products or services you offer, but there is also the ability to focus on a region or a group. For example, we have a customer who only services Armidale, so we are able to target the ads to people within 20 km of the post office. We have another customer selling premium homewares; they know that their customers are mostly women over 30, so we don’t waste their money showing the ads to 25 year old men.

This is, of course, the first step in running a campaign. A conversion strategy also needs to be undertaken, to ensure the best chance of turning someone viewing your ad into a customer. With the tracking and analysis available through online advertising, we can provide details back to a cost per customer basis.

Final words?

I would like to see a lot more online activity in Armidale. Being one of the rollout sites for the NBN gives this town a great opportunity to show how new customers and business can be attracted to a switched on community.

W

hen and why did you choose to visit Antarctica?

It’s always been on my bucket list of places I wanted to visit, and early last year some great deals came out with some pretty good savings on cruises to Antarctica, so I decided it was too good to pass up.

I think for most people Antarctica is the last frontier, and over the last few years the cost has become much more affordable to the average traveller. The season for cruising the Antarctic goes from late November through to March; because of work, I thought late November, early December was the best time for me to get some time off.

Who travelled with you?

I went with an old friend from the UK. Carol and I met over 25 years ago when I was working as a journalist in northern England and even though we only worked together for 1 year and I came back to Australia the following year, and we really only see each other every couple of years (mainly when I go back to the UK to visit Neal’s family), we have just kept in touch all this time. People are quite surprised when we tell them we’ve known each other for 25 years but have really only seen each other about 5 times in that period! Anyway, I asked her if she fancied a holiday with penguins, and she said yes!

Why didn’t your hubby, Neal, go with you?

Because I didn’t ask him! Not really. The one drawback of running your own business with your husband as your business partner is that it can be difficult getting time off together. Also, for Neal’s side of the business, late November and December is peak time leading into Christmas, so it’s even harder for him to get away at that time – and that’s the season to cruise Antarctica. I don’t think he’s forgiven me yet, but hopefully he will get there sometime (and maybe I’ll get to go again).

How did you get there?

Depending on who you talk to, getting down to the Antarctic is half the fun! I flew over to Buenos Aires and

The Armidale School The Armidale School students have again excelled in the Higher School Certificate. We talked to Director of Studies Mrs Seonia Wark about the programs that have contributed to this academic success, and Registrar Mrs Pip Warrick about the upcoming Open Day.

S

o Seonia, who were the top performers of the TAS Class of 2012?

Seonia Wark: Our boys had some terrific results. James Mohun was school Dux with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 98.35, three other boys – Tom Wyatt, Jack Scifleet and Josh Taylor – also recorded ATARs above 96, and both James and Jack made the Board of Studies All Round Achievers list, which acknowledges those students who achieve a mark of 90 in more in 10 units of study.

There were only four students from the New England North West region on the list, and that two of these – and the only boys – were from TAS makes us very proud. In fact, it was the best result for boys at any school north of Newcastle.

There were also solid results across the board, weren’t there?

SW: It was very pleasing that thirteen per cent of boys received an ATAR above 90, but equally pleasing was that most of the cohort achieved above their expectation. This was a year group who achieved strongly due to application and hard work and really embraced a burgeoning academic culture in the school.

It was also gratifying that TAS was the top ranking school in the region in English – this was particularly rewarding, given boys tend to be overshadowed by girls in the humanities subjects.

You mention the academic culture of the school. What’s different?

SW: Over the past two years there has been a renewed focus on initiatives that extend the academic pursuits of students. We have introduced an out-of-hours academic support program that includes tutoring with our teachers and a five day HSC study camp. Of special interest is that seven of the top eight boys this year were boarders, who made full use of the library’s extended and weekend opening hours and resident tutors. Armidale High School’s Drama results continued to be very impressive. Six students were nominated for On Stage for their Outstanding HSC Drama works (Lachlan Harper, Jack Grigg, Toby Hemmings, Thomas Mof¿tt, Darcy Newberry-Dupe, Manon Drielsma). This extraordinary result from Ms Penny McCue’s Drama class was also reÀected in exceptional HSC examination results; 39% of students in that class scoring band 6s (which was better than the state performance in Drama by

a factor of 3); an astonishing 78% of the class getting band 5 or 6.

In Music, Emily Little was nominated for Encore for outstanding music performance and cemented this result with a band six and E4 her HSC Music examination (Music 2 and music Extension). She was joined by Ingrid Fittler who also gained a band 6 (Music 1).

Aboriginal HSC Achievement A strong mentoring and support program with ambitious goals to help Aboriginal students achieve at the HSC level continues to deliver pleasing results. Aboriginal students (8) achieving HSCs were: Zacariah Ahoy, Courtney Barker, Sharna Blair, Caitlin Briggs-Andrews, Tyron Campbell, Daniel Froome, and Kahlia Strong. Liam Keenan was the outstanding Aboriginal student, gaining marks in the 70s and 80s in all of his HSC subjects.

Despite water polo being a popular club sport at UNE, this is the first time that an Armidale City club has formed. This is an exciting step, and we are delighted to be a part of NSW Polo. Our goals are to bring in more people from the local community, particularly the schools, and give all interested parties access to this great sport.

Celebrating Thirty! Years.

Each gallery at the New England Regional Art Museum will be transformed this February, when 5 new exhibitions open Friday 8 February 6pm, marking the first exhibition opening of NERAM’s 30th year.

In honour of this milestone, the exhibition, Thirty!, will showcase 30 years of NERAM acquisitions from the Hinton Collection, including Sydney Ball, Donald Friend, Cressida Campbell, Rosalie Gascoigne, and James Gleeson.

This captivating exhibition will include one major acquisition for each year and demonstrate the incredible evolution of Hinton’s Collection from 1983 to 2012.

Howard Hinton collected artworks by 62 outstanding female artists. Artworks from each of these women will be proudly displayed in With a Brush in Her Hand.

From watercolours to oils, from portraits to still life, this exhibition provides a glimpse into the achievements of some remarkable Australian female artists, including Margaret Preston, Nora Heysen, Thea Proctor, Jean Bellette and Esther Paterson.

Expansion accentuates her expert use of mosaics by tracing the evolution of her mosaic work through photographs of the mosaic, including its preparation, installation and restoration.

Women continue to be the focus this February, with regional artist Hilary Pollock and her wonderful exhibition Serenade – the Artist and the Bush: artworks that have been inspired by artists and musicians alike.

This exhibition follows their narratives, which translate the patterns of sights and sounds of the bush into highly decorative works.

For a bit of fun, Amanda Airs’ Please Refrain from Wearing Shoes gives visitors an opportunity to participate in an installation looking at the relationship between viewer and

artwork.

The painted abstract landscape featuring incredible colours, combined with the movement of the viewer, will create a subtle performance which can only be experienced in the space.

Each of these exhibitions will be opening Friday 8 February, 6pm, in conjunction with the launch of NERAM’s Big Art Sale.

Their next hurdle will be addressing their $14.432bn debt ceiling in the 1st quarter, and it is hoped goodwill and common sense will again prevail in the U.S. House of Representatives.

he tide has washed away our footprints for 2012 and now 2013 lies clean and clear ahead of us, with just a few steps already marked in the sand.

Many of us have spent time at the beach and have had a brush with sunburn to prove it ... all part of a typical Australian holiday season.

So, back to pick up what awaits.

People talk so much about New Year resolutions, but how many of us really carry them through is highly debatable.

The holiday season can give us time for our minds to wander into what could be possible in a fresh new year – a change of direction, new goals to achieve, new schools, new courses, new challenges …

My holiday reading found some quirky directions being followed in the renewable energy conversation.

The Sydney Morning Herald on the 31.12.12 had a story about architects in Paris using the excess warmth of the body heat of people in the Metro as well as the heat from friction on the trainlines to power underfloor heating for public housing apartments nearby.

In Sweden, the rail ventilation system

heats water in tanks underground, which is then pumped to heating pipes.

Swedish engineers are working on a way to ‘capture excess body heat on a scale large enough to warm homes and office buildings in a perpetual cycle of mutual generosity’. What can we say but, “Wow!”, recognising that those Swedes are serious people and are looking towards designing the system into new buildings where possible.

Another apparently quirky idea was in The Australian of 29/30.12.12. It told the story of Odette Lenane, a Tasmanian oyster grower. Apparently, oysters filter 6 litres of water an hour, which seems astonishing. She has a grant to investigate cleaning polluted estuaries around the world through the use of billions of oysters. Their shells could also be used by the building industry (as they were, in fact, in the early days of the colony in Sydney). I guess one of the problems in a hungry world would be to stop people eating them, every one, like the Walrus and the Carpenter in Alice, before they had a chance to do their job.

I know the media use these stories over what is called the ‘silly season’, but nonetheless it’s interesting to hear of people letting their minds think outside routine channels – that’s how discoveries

and changes are made. A lot of those discoveries happen at our university, of course, but also in businesses around town, where people develop new ideas and better ways of doing things.

Locally, among other such groups, the New England Wind Consortium and the Farming the Sun people are working towards ‘community owned renewable energy as part of the shift to sustainability’.

I can never understand why the principle of renewable energy shouldn’t be wholeheartedly embraced by everyone, unless I suppose they have a vested interest that overrides all other considerations.

It underlines a chance to rethink and perhaps readjust our lives within our community to maximise the available advantages.

There is so much available for every interest here, that I always hesitate to start listing for fear of leaving something out. Make the effort to try something new this year – go to a cricket school, go to the opera, listen to a new band in town, take up a new hobby, join a group (there’s one for just about everything).

And doing something with the community comes back to give you pleasure, as well as what you give.

avid studied graphic art at the National Art School, East Sydney, 1951-54. In 1959 he established his own graphic design studio in Sydney, employing six artists and acquiring many top clients, including Parke-Davis, Mirror Newspapers, Lido Ties and Marbletone.

In 1965 he was requested by Avon Products head office USA to design their first Australianproduced sales promotion material. He also supervised the photography and print quality of all their literature, operating his studio for a further six years, after which time he elected to make a career change.

Following an overseas tour with his wife and two children in 1971-72, visiting the great art galleries of Britain and Europe, he decided to pursue a full-time career in the field of fine arts. In 1972, his entry was selected to hang in the prestigious Wynne Landscape prize. His first one-man exhibition, with 40 paintings, was held in 1973 at the Robert Wardrop Gallery, Roseville, and sold out.

The smiling faces of mother and daughter duo, Gayle Kee and Kathryn White, have helped steer TG’s CHILD CARE into a successful privately owned preschool and long day care service in both Uralla and Armidale.

Gayle, a university qualified Early Childhood Educator with over 26 years’ hands-on experience as a community-based and ‘privately owned’ preschool teacher, inherited her love and passion for early childhood education from her mother Lois (a 30 year old veteran of community-based preschool education).

Kathryn, who was working her way around the USA as an Au Pair, returned to the New England region 4 years ago to assist with the establishment of the first ‘TG’s CHILD CARE’ at Uralla.

With the success of the Uralla service and huge demand for child care places in Armidale, the duo’s next adventure was the complete re-development and refurbishment of what is now known as TG’s CHILD CARE – ARMIDALE (formerly ABC Learning).

I was going to ask Gayle and Kathryn what they think is the key ingredient to a harmonious mother/daughter working relationship, but the picture tells a thousand words. Those two big ‘kids’ (albeit well qualified), obviously love their work and have a great sense of fun providing early childhood education to the children of the New England region.

Becoming a vet was a childhood dream of mine; having grown up on a farm with a strong interest in science, medicine and animals, there was simply no alternative.

I’ve been a vet now for 21 years, and it’s been a challenging and very rewarding career. I have seen different types of practice and have been lucky enough to have worked around Australia, in England and Singapore.

My areas of interest now lie primarily in the small animal sector, and I have a strong background in this field with a Masters Degree in Small Animal Practice and spent the last 6 years in a 24-hour Vet Centre in Sydney, which provided an Emergency and ICU facility for 25 neighbouring clinics, as well as general practice.

Moving to Armidale, and New England Vets in particular, is allowing me to practice to a very high standard and satisfy my yearning to live in the country. My sons have started at TAS, which will bring many fantastic opportunities for them, and my husband, Peter, is enjoying starting the New England Tennis Academy.

I took over the Uralla Newsagency on the 30th April 2012; I was looking for a career change, and this opportunity came at the right time.

I love the day to day contact with the customers; every customer has become part of our family in such a big way. I have been completely overwhelmed by the support of the community and surrounding districts, and I'm extremely grateful for that.

My staff consists of my daughter, Katie Whackett, Karen Doran, Jake Barraclough and Robert Schofield. I am extremely lucky to have the most wonderful people work for me, and I know they are the biggest asset any business could have. I lost 2 staff members recently; my son, Adam, to the defence force, and Samantha Doran to UNE partnership. I would like to thank them for their hard work in getting my shop up and running.

My plans for the future are to have the newsagency fully stocked with stationery, magazines and a few gift lines.

We have already introduced Country Link train tickets, and we're hoping to introduce bus tickets soon. As it is still early days for us, we are asking customers what they would like to see sold here. Eighteen months ago, our family opted for a 'tree change' from inner city Sydney to Armidale. So, I moved my well-established design practice to the beautiful New England.

My partner, Hamish Holley, an experienced builder and trained architect, decided to down tools in favour of the drawing board, and architecture@altitude was created.

Our individual skills vary greatly, but are highly compatible, so we bring our particular strengths to each project to obtain a practical, cost effective solution, no matter how big or small the project.

Based on a client's brief, we generally start with quick hand drawn sketches. I then develop the project using ArchiCad, a brilliant 3D documenting program that allows me to 'build' a model and generate drawings that are very easy to understand, not only saving time and money for our clients, but making my job very enjoyable and efficient!

Since moving to Armidale, we are enjoying a greater variety of projects, making ourselves available to the wider community and relishing the more relaxed rural environment.

How long have you owned the Armidale Wholesale Fruit Market? My husband, Phil, and I have owned it for 8 years.

What do you specialise in? Our speciality is fruit and veg, although we have expanded our business over the past 12 months. We are so much more than just your local Green Grocer; we now stock Jacksons Quality Meats, Morpeth Sour Dough Bread, Fresh Flowers, Peel Valley Milk, and daily newspapers. We also stock 'The Market Grocer' product range, which consists of nuts, juices, home-made jams and sauces, Asian foods, oils, condiments and more. We are the only stockists of The Market Grocer, who are exclusive to independent grocers.

What do you love most about your business? Being my own boss and working with my husband, Phil. It’s a really great industry to be in, even though it can be challenging – especially when the weather isn’t too kind to our Aussie farmers, as that in turn has an impact on all of us. It’s really great when a customer finds a new recipe and asks us to source speciality items.

Plans for the future? It’s very exciting! Over the next few weeks we will be revamping the store. We will be introducing new products from The Market Grocer range and giving the shop a fresh, new look to make your shopping experience even better.

What inspired you to open your new business, and where did the business name come from? The name of my store, Renee Maree, came from one of my lovely nieces: Renee.

I was inspired to open my own business because of my love of handbags and my love of helping customers.

Tell us about the products we can find in your store? I stock a large range of brands and products, including So-Lite, Eminnent, Bazaar and the Pierre Cardin Luggage, and all your travel needs, IE Looks, travel pillows and adaptors for all countries.

How long have you been in the industry and owned your own business? I have worked in the food industry for over thirty years and have owned our own businesses for five and a half years. I now only own Melon Cauli in Bridge St, Uralla.

Describe produce and menu? We stock fresh fruit and vegetables, with many local growers supplying us with their produce. Our deli has an extensive range of cold cuts, cheeses, antipasto and yummy home made salads.

We also offer a dine in or take away menu consisting of tea, coffee, cakes, slices, breakfast, sandwiches, rolls, pies, pancakes, filled savoury potatoes. We also do catering packages.

What do you enjoy most about being the Director of NECOM? I love that NECOM has such an outstanding track record in presenting wonderful music programs to schools, students and our community. I believe passionately in the importance of music education, and it is a disgrace that 63% of Australian primary children have NO classroom music in their school. It’s great that NECOM can really make a difference to our community’s cultural life and reverse that appalling statistic.

What musical instrument do you play? My main instrument was my voice – according to my mother, I sang from the moment I could stand up. I also played piano and flute in high school, so I could join the orchestra.

What type of music do you most enjoy listening to? A huge variety – as long as it transports me, makes me think and feel alive. Definitely opera, choral and orchestral music, great ’retro’ rock (e.g. Pink Floyd, U2, Frank Zappa) and I really like the hybrid music of Yo-Yo Ma and Mark O’Connor at the moment as well.

Mary single, the CEO of The Armidale Private Hospital, reminds us how our City was lucky enough to obtain a private hospital ... and this hospital is still leading the way in quality health after 15 years! ow did the hospital finally become a reality, and when was Armidale Private Hospital officially opened 15 years ago?

Armidale Private Hospital was built because a need was recognised within the community and surrounding district to provide a more extensive medical service. Recruiting and retaining medical specialists to the area was extremely difficult at this time. It was through the persistence and determination of the local medicos and chairman of the board of the public hospital at the time that we came into existence. Some of the key people involved were Mr David Hegarty, Chairman of the Board, Dr John Nevin, Chairman of the Medical Staff Council and later, Dr Jim Maher, who took over from Mr

Hegarty. In the early 1990s, due to the State Government budgetary constraints, the public hospital struggled to get capital works funding to upgrade the facility and was very limited with the amount of surgical procedures they could undertake. For example, at one stage they were limited to only two joint replacement procedures per month, and there was a long waiting list.

Most of the specialists at the time were Visiting Medical Officers and not directly employed by the area health service, so they required a reliable source of income to be able to remain in Armidale.

They also needed to do regular procedures to maintain their skills.

After much lobbying of the politicians and an election promise in the lead up to the 1995 State Election, approval was granted to set

up a committee to determine the need and investigate the viability of a private hospital. Once all the details were finalised, it was put to tender to find a suitable private hospital group willing to undertake the building and running of Armidale Private Hospital. Mayne Nickless and its subsidiary Health Care of Australia (HCoA) were the successful tenders, and the building commenced in 1997. Armidale Private Hospital opened its doors to its first patients on 27 January 1998.

Mark Howland was appointed the Director of Hospital and Director of Nursing, and he quickly formed a strong and dedicated team of people who shared the same vision of providing an exceptional health care service to the community. continued over

Tell us about the staff employed at Armidale Private Hospital?

Behind every successful organisation is a team of dedicated, compassionate and professional people, and this is no more evident than the team that work at Armidale Private Hospital.

As the CEO/Director of Clinical Services, my role is to oversee the running of the business and clinical management of the hospital. I have been part of Armidale Private Hospital since we opened in 1998 in various roles.

The hospital is divided into three departments: administration, the medical/surgical ward and operating theatres.

David Trestrail, the Finance Manager, heads up the administration team, who are the first

people you will see upon entering the hospital.

Many will recognise the faces of these Armidale locals. David has been with us for four years and has been on a steep learning curve during that time, as it his first job in the medical industry. His theatrical skills have provided a great deal of entertainment for us all – especially with the production of the most recent Armidale Private Hospital staff Christmas video.

Sue Maxwell is the Nurse Unit Manager of the Medical/Surgical ward, which also includes the Sleep Disorders unit. She has been in this position for the past three years and her role is quite diverse when compared to a Nurse

Unit Manager of a metropolitan hospital. One of her many roles is as the discharge planner, which ensures appropriate services and care are in place prior to the patient being discharged from hospital.

The team includes registered and enrolled nurses, assistants in nursing, medical technologists and environmental services staff. The hospital is fortunate to also have the expertise and experience of a local occupational therapist and physiotherapists from Rusden Street Physiotherapy. continued over

Cheryl Constance is the Nurse Unit Manager of the Operating Theatres, with the team made up of registered nurses, CSSD technicians and theatre orderlies. Cheryl has been the Nurse Unit Manager for the past 11 years, and prior to that she worked as a registered nurse at a private hospital on the far south coast of NSW. Cheryl was voted as one of the three finalists in the Ramsay Health Care Clinical Manager of the Year in 2012.

In addition to these departments, we have appointed nurses to the roles of Infection Control Coordinator and Workplace and Health and Safety Coordinator.

The hospital is very fortunate to be able to employ only local staff. Many hospitals from time to time are reliant on having to engage external nursing agency staff to ensure that they are able to function. We have never had the need to use agency staff, as recruitment and retention of staff is not a problem for our hospital due to the excellent working conditions. At least 20% of staff have been with the hospital

since opening, and approximately 50% of staff have been with us for 10 years or more.

Morale at the hospital has always been high, with staff enjoying excellent working relationships with all health professionals and service providers. Much of our feedback from patients and visitors includes comments on how happy the staff appear, as well as the high level of professionalism and courtesy.

Social functions are always popular, and staff actively participate in community events such as RUoK? Day, Relay for Life and other Cancer Council fundraising activities.

How many beds and operating theatres do you have?

Armidale Private Hospital consists of 30 beds in the mixed Medical/Surgical Ward. A majority of the rooms are single with ensuite bathrooms.

The other rooms have two beds and also have ensuite bathrooms. Every bed has a television and telephone. There is access to WiFi throughout the hospital.

Our Operating Theatre suite consists of two

operating theatres, a sterilising department and recovery ward.

The hospital also has a dedicated Respiratory Failure and Sleep Disorders Unit.

We hear that you have won some awards over the years?

Over the years we have won many awards for our customer service and patient satisfaction. The surveys are conducted by the external providers Press Ganey. Again, in 2012 we were number one within the Ramsay group of hospitals for patient satisfaction. We have also received the top award from leading health fund, Medibank Private, for customer satisfaction.

The hospital was rated the best private hospital in New South Wales and the best regional and rural hospital nationally, for two years running.

Another achievement is our results in the staff satisfaction surveys which are conducted every second year, also by Press Ganey. For three surveys in a row, we have had the highest level

of staff satisfaction within the Ramsay group and in 2012, the highest score Press Ganey has ever had from any facility surveyed.

The key to the hospital’s ongoing performance improvement program is participation in the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards auditing process. Auditors visit and examine the hospital’s facilities, processes and patient outcomes and rank the results. A high standard must be met in these audits for the private health funds to allow their members to be treated in the hospital. Armidale Private has always maintained well above the average benchmark in these audits.

Tell us about your recent refurbishment, and who contributed to the build?

After almost 15 years, we felt we needed a ‘face lift’ for the hospital. We commenced with the front foyer during 2012. There were numerous people involved with the refurbishment process, and I thank them all for the great

results We could not have done it without the results. wonderful advice, support and organisational skills of the interior decorator Tina Long. She was extremely patient with us when trying to make decisions on the final look we wanted to achieve. Anthony Killen built and installed the fabulous reception desk, which not only looks great, but is much more user friendly for the staff and provides greater privacy for the patients when booking in.

Warren Johns was the painter, who also did a fabulous job and again, was very patient with us when deciding on the feature wall colour. Vince Williams provided the electrical services for the build, AOK Signs developed the fabulous signage, and Lockmans’ Doors and Windows provided the glasswork.

These people were the key businesses involved in our recent refurbishment of the front foyer, but over the years the hospital has developed strong relationships with many Armidale businesses. We feel that it is important for the

businesses therether hospital to support the local businesses, fore supporting the economy and community.

What are the benefits of being a private health patient?

There are many benefits of being privately insured. Firstly, and I think most importantly, it gives you the ability to choose your doctor or specialist. It also means much shorter waiting times for elective surgery and allows you more control over when and where you want to be treated.

While private insurance covers the cost of private healthcare, it does not mean that those without private health cover cannot be treated at a private hospital. Some of our patients elect to use the hospital by paying for their procedures. These are described as self funded patients. This is always an option for those who don’t have insurance, and a quote for any procedure or admission can be obtained from our reception staff. Once a quote is provided, the patient can make a decision on whether to go

ahead, but there is no obligation to do so.

In addition to those with health insurance and self funded patients, Department of Veterans Affairs and Workers Compensation patients may be eligible for admission to the hospital.

Sue Maxwell, the medical/surgical ward Nurse Unit Manager, is the DVA Liaison Officer for the hospital and can assist with specific DVA enquiries. Any community member may contact reception staff to ascertain their health cover status and obtain any quotes for out of pocket expenses.

The presence of the Private Hospital is of benefit to not only those who use it. As more people use private health services, pressure is reduced on our overburdened public health system, reducing public waiting lists and costs.

Future plans?

We are very excited to be opening our second Operating Theatre this year. Although we have always had two theatres, we have not had the need to utilise the second one until

now. This is due to the growth of the hospital and arrival of a new general surgeon to town, Dr Graham Stewart and anaesthetist, Dr Pavel Janda. Opening this Theatre will, in turn, provide more operating time to new specialists looking to move to the area.

There will be a gradual total refurbishment of the hospital over the next 18 months, which will improve the aesthetics and the comfort of the facility. We are constantly looking at the possibility of introducing new services and interventions and determining whether these will fit the community’s needs.

The development of the Rural Medical School at the University of New England has had a very positive impact on the local health community.

Recent specialist appointments have involved dual appointments across the hospitals and university. This assists with attracting much needed specialists to the area, and we are optimistic that this will continue to occur and expand health care services.

I joined Ducats earthmoving in January 2000, after moving from Sydney.

Armidale has a place in history as the first mainland city in Australia to switch on the National Broadband Network.

It was 18 May 2011 when the Prime Minister pressed the button to officially launch the network which now runs past around 7,500 premises throughout Armidale. Work is now underway to complete the rollout to the rest of Armidale, to make it the first city of its size that’s fully fibred.

This means the people of Armidale are among the first to access the benefits of super-fast internet, including*: • Great quality video calls to stay connected with family and friends •Access to health services and interactive educational content online • Working from home like you would at the office • Getting the whole family online at once • Downloading movies in minutes and streaming TV online

In November 2012, home owners and businesses in these areas received letters from NBN Co advising of the 18-month switchover to fibre, replacing most existing landline phone services, and ADSL internet services in the area.

These existing services will be permanently switched off in May next year. This means if people want to keep making phone calls or accessing the internet using a landline connection, they need to switch to services over the NBN. NBN Co Chief Communications Officer says: “A standard installation of the NBN equipment

is free of charge, and there’s a great range of competitive NBN packages available for purchase from a large number of service providers. This means you could access internet and phone services over the NBN for a price less than you might think. NBN Co doesn’t sell direct to the public, so speak to your preferred service provider to see if they have any other fees,” Mr Cooney said.

There are a number of important things many people will need to discuss with their service providers to ensure they continue to connect to the services and applications they need. more tennis, travel in Australia and embark on more walking trips. Jack will also enjoy more time with the guests who come to stay in Poppy’s Cottage B&B. Most importantly, he wants to spend more quality time with his wonderful wife and three grown-up children: Felicity, Thomas and Lachlan, who are all now back in Sydney. Thinking Reputation with legal minds

THINKING

REPUTATION

A

person or small company (‘the aggrieved’) may be defamed when someone (‘the publisher’) publicly makes or publishes untrue statements that malign the reputation of the aggrieved.

An apology and retraction by the publisher of an untrue statement is usually the first step to resolving a dispute, particularly where the publisher has made the statement in error. When a publisher does not properly retract an untrue or malicious statement, the law of defamation may be invoked to protect the aggrieved party’s reputation.

Impact of Defamation Stating or publishing comments without proper enquiry combined with reckless allegations about an individual may be considered as malicious and defamatory, ultimately causing a negative impact on a person’s reputation and self esteem, disrupting and maligning their achievements in business, social, sporting, political and cultural associations that may have been built up over several years. Any prior community recognition or awards which may show the esteem in which a person was held or other good works may be brought into doubt.

The emotional impact on the aggrieved person can be overwhelming, causing anxiety, hurt feelings, financial loss and depression. Individuals and companies may suffer both economic and non-economic loss. If the publisher is reluctant or refuses to withdraw untrue statements or published material, an aggrieved person may proceed to take action against the publisher.

Resolving Matters Without Going to Court In NSW, the Defamation Act 2005 (‘the Act’) provides the steps involved in taking action against a publisher of defamatory material or statements. The objects of the Act, however, provide that law of defamation is not intended to place unreasonable limits on freedom of expression and, in particular, on the publication and discussion of matters of public interest and importance.

Such action may be at common law or may follow statutory provisions. Defamatory material does not have to be in writing and includes slander. The Act also provides for the circumstances in which a defence may be available to the publisher, such as where the statement is substantially true or where a publisher may have parliamentary or other privilege. Under provisions of the Act, not only are individuals entitled to take action in defamation, but also not-for-profit organisations and companies that employ less than 10 full time equivalent staff.

The first step to resolve defamation matters in accordance with the Act is for an aggrieved person to provide a concerns notice to the publisher. The concerns notice must be in 54 new england focus.

writing and inform the publisher of the false and defamatory allegations that they have attributed to the aggrieved person. This is referred to as the imputations. If the aggrieved fails to properly particularise the imputations of the concern adequately, the publisher may request further particulars to understand the concerns of the aggrieved. Those particulars must be supplied to the publisher within 14 days after a written request is received by the aggrieved.

After a concerns notice and any further particulars have been issued, the publisher has 28 days in which it may make an offer to make amends either in relation to the matter generally, or limited to part of the defamatory imputations.

An offer to make amends, however, cannot be made if 28 days have lapsed since the publisher was provided with a concerns notice, or if the aggrieved person has filed Court proceedings and the publisher has filed a defence.

An offer to make amends must be in writing and include an offer to publish in writing a correction or retraction or to tell people that the published or stated material was incorrect and defamatory. The offer to make amends must include an offer to pay the expenses reasonably incurred by the aggrieved before the offer was made and the expenses (such as legal costs) for the aggrieved to consider the offer. The offer by the publisher may also include any other action to redress the harm, such as financial compensation.

Going to Court If an offer is not provided or does not satisfy statutory requirements, the aggrieved may take formal action to sue the publisher through either the District or Supreme Court of NSW or, in some cases, through the Federal Court system. Defamation matters cannot be filed in the Local Court. An action must be filed by way of a Statement of Claim within 12 months of the defamatory material being published. Apart from any economic loss, the aggrieved may claim compensation up to $250,000. The level of compensation, however, is ultimately determined by the Court.

Before proceeding to determine any claim for compensation, a 1 day hearing takes place before a jury to determine if there is at least one defamatory imputation conveyed by the publisher.

If found, the parties then proceed to a trial to determine if any defences are available and if not, what compensation should be awarded to the aggrieved. In addition to compensation, the losing party will usually be liable to pay the winning parties legal costs. Court proceedings for defamation are extremely expensive. Before taking such proceedings, individuals should always obtain independent legal advice.

Ageing Gracefully

by Dr. Chandran Arianayagam Time takes its toll on the human body in different ways, and skin is no exception. In fact, the effects of excessive exposure of fair skin to the harsh Australian sun compounds the effects of ageing.

Initially, the changes are noted on the surface as blotchy, pigmented marks and fine blood vessels on the face. Later, skin begins to thin and sag due to collagen in the dermis (deeper part of skin) losing substance and the thinning of the fat layer beneath the skin.

Facial Rejuvenation is now well established, using skincare and protection, as well as lasers and surgical methods as the basic building blocks.

Skincare is a must and refers to adequate moisturising of skin and avoidance of the use of drying agents, including some soaps and cosmetics. Skin protection is the use of suitable clothes and sunblocks and the avoidance of overexposure to the sun.

‘PhotoThermoLysis’ (photo+light/thermal=heat/ lysis=destroy) is the principle by which lasers work to rejuvenate skin. Both ‘skin peeling’ and ‘non skin peeling’ methods are available and PhotoThermoLysis produces new collagen, with a resultant increase in skin tone (firmness) and a decrease in the sagging of skin. In addition, the skin looks and feels better too.

‘Dermal Fillers’ are injections used to place synthetic collagen in the dermis and are appropriate for softening facial lines and grooves; in effect,

this temporarily reproduces the effects of the laser treatment.

Surgical Methods of facial rejuvenation have become more sophisticated over the years, with the emphasis more on restoration rather than removal and/or tightening. In a facelift operation, where previously skin removal and tightening were the mainstays, now there is much less removal and much more restoration of tissues to the original site, reducing the effects of sagging and stretch.

Toyota HiLux 4x4.

For the last week, I have had the opportunity to test drive a very rugged and impressive vehicle: the Toyota HiLux 4x4. oyota markets the vehicle as Australia’s favourite ‘Action Utility Vehicle’ and after putting it through its paces over the last week, I can definitely see why.

On receiving the vehicle, I was ultra impressed with the modern sporty look mixed in with the ‘ready to work‘ appearance. The new Glacier White colour, along with the alloy sports bar and alloy wheels, was very appealing.

On entering the Toyota HiLux 4x4, I was very surprised. I had impressions that being a utility, the inside finishes and features would be basic, but it was totally the opposite. The interior was a modern finish and in sync with what Toyota continues to produce. The media player was typical of the high standard Toyota puts into its vehicles. The audio system was MP3 compatible with a CD player. The USB plug allowed for iPods to be utilised. Having an inbuilt Bluetooth system ticked all the boxes required in having a complete package at my disposal.

While utilising the HiLux 4x4, I made use of the Satellite Navigation system. I purposely submitted routes to determine the accuracy of the system, and it did not fail. I was amazed at the features and information the system provided, even down

to the details of the speed limit at the section of road I was driving on. This system also had a feature that could be enabled to notify you when you were exceeding the speed limit.

On one occasion while testing the vehicle, I loaded up the rear tray section and headed down to the Pony Club Jamboree at Uralla, to support all the rides and in particular the members of the Kingstown Pony Club. I had my husband drive, and I sat in the rear section of the cab to test the comfort and space. There was ample room and although I sat with two children, there would be no problem sitting three adults in the rear cab. The ride was surprisingly smooth and comfortable.

Having to care for the horses, the HiLux 4x4 allowed me to make use of the rear tray section to convey feed and equipment out to the property where they are kept. What I did notice was how deep the rear tray section was. I was able to fit everything in with ease. I can see why these vehicles are so popular for work and family

purposes.

The HiLux 4x4 was very comfortable to drive on the open road and in town conditions. Being powered by a 3.0 Litre Turbo-diesel engine, supported by Electronic Direct Injection, it gave me plenty of power when I needed it. Having an 8.3 Litre per 100 km fuel consumption was exceptionally impressive, allowing for a large amount of savings in fuel costs.

As always, I consider the safety aspects of the vehicles I test, and this vehicle passed with flying colours. The Toyota HiLux 4x4 is made with a mixture of anti-corrosion and high tensile steel, giving the body extra strength. The front section of the cabin has front and side airbags for both

driver and passenger. It also comes with AntiSkid Braking System, Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control.

After taking possession of this vehicle, I was approached by many friends, who were envious about what I was driving. They all indicated that the HiLux was their ‘dream’ vehicle, and I can definitely see why. The Toyota Hilux 4x4 is well presented and for a utility, has the comforts of a high standard car and can be used for many purposes. I highly commend this vehicle.
