Welcome to the January edition of New England FOCUS.
appy New Year! Yep, it’s that time of year when most of us start to assess where we’re heading for the next 12 months. Maybe we start to think about our fitness (or lack thereof!) Or, perhaps it’s getting our finances in shape that occupies our thoughts. We’ve aimed to provide some inspiration in this edition, our 140th issue! We have some interviews about health and fitness; and our Business Minds guest, Matt Meehan from Agbis, offers some sound financial advice. Thai fighter, with four fights - and four wins - to her name. She’s expecting to compete again around February, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on her career! Muay Thai is a super tough and often male-dominated sport, so we feel Tori deserves a huge amount of recognition for her efforts. Guyra Feature We truly are blessed in New England with so many gorgeous and unique towns and villages, but this month we’ve chosen to shine a spotlight on Guyra. Of course, the famous Guyra Lamb and Potato festival will be held this month, so we had a quick chat with one of the festival’s founders, Frank Presnell. It was wonderful to hear some of Frank’s thoughts and memories about
the festival, which is now in its 33rd year! We’re also very proud to showcase some of Guyra’s fabulous businesses and services ... so if you haven’t visited the home of the Big Lamb for a while, why not plan a day trip? Final Say “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” - Bill Vaughn.

y apologies for cancelling the Christmas Bash. We found that other organisations and businesses were having their Christmas celebrations at the same time, which affected our numbers. One of the functions of Chamber is to represent business on Committees of Council. Since becoming President, I have sat on the Business Advisory Committee, the Mall Reference Group, and the Regional Growth Advisory Committee (RGAC). The Council Committees consist of Councillors, Council staff, representatives of other organisations, such as Locals 4 Locals and Guyra Business Chamber, as well as community representatives. As well, the Chamber is involved in Renew Armidale, an independent incorporated body set up to use innovative means to fill empty shops/ offices in Armidale. RGAC has been reviewing the airport requirements and the business park to be constructed there. There has been a lot of work, with further planning needed. Funding is the major impediment to development, though that is presently being sought. The Mall Reference Group has met on many occasions and with the assistance of the consultants, King & Campbell, has come up with a plan. Business and individuals may or may not agree with it; it has been developed through a consultative process. At present though, it is on hold. The new Council CEO, Susan Law, since taking up her position five months ago has looked at the various plans and projects for

One of her conclusions, echoed by Mayor Simon Murray, is that these projects or plans stand like silos, with no overarching plan into which they may fit and through which they may connect. That is particularly the case for Armidale. Council has therefore decided to develop a Master Plan for Armidale. While this has a lot of common sense about it, it will mean delays to proposals for the Mall and for example, the parking proposals. While to many this additional delay may be annoying, it is sensible, if carried out expeditiously, with the businesses and the community being aware at all times of progress with the Master Plan and any projects which may go ahead in the meantime. Regrettably, another consideration is the fact that the Council is in the red and has little or no funds for projects. That is why the Armidale Business Chamber has asked the community to financially support a Business Case being obtained in respect of the Rail Trail proposal. At present, the development of a Master Plan is to be monitored by the Business Advisory Committee. I will report further developments with the proposed Plan. An exciting development though, is the plans for Costa to develop further its horticultural interests at Guyra. More horticultural investment by other organisations in the Armidale region is to be very much encouraged. I would like to thank the Chamber Committee and the Executive Officer, Tyler McDonald, for all their work this year and to wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2019.

eed unique wedding stationery? No problem. Want a logo or design laser engraved on to timber? Done! Even hand painted signage isn’t an issue for this talented local designer. Nikki tells us more about her business, Niknee Designs … How long have you lived and worked in the New England area? I was born in Armidale and have lived in the area all of my life. I gained a signwriting apprenticeship after I finished my HSC and once I completed my trade certificate, I continued working as a signwriter up until just recently, before switching career paths - I’m currently completing my Floristry Certificate. I love the New England area and have been so very lucky to have been able to stay close to family and friends, whilst working in the areas that I love. How/when did your interest in design begin? I guess … for as long as I can remember. I’ve always had a strong interest in design, art and creating. I have a creative mind and as a young girl, I would spend my weekends either in the art and craft box, or in the shed with dad making things! I had a fantastic art teacher at school, who encouraged my art and design and helped me with direction on what and where to go once I had completed school. I think my mum was my biggest fan though, keeping EVERYTHING I ever drew or made (seriously!) Starting your own business comes with its own share of challenges! What learning
6 New England focus.
I create anything from curves have you had thrown at you since you established Niknee Designs? The biggest learning curve would be time management. As my husband has his own painting contracting business, we have a young family, and also studying in between my custom jobs and my part-time job - it can all be a bit of a juggle at times. I am a one woman show (apart from when I bombard Dad with timber to cut for me!) and I have had to learn to manage my time and also charge clients accordingly. The majority of designers will nearly almost spend more time on a piece than what they are getting paid for. The correspondence between clients can be demanding, and then the social media presence these days is also a crucial part of any business, keeping people interested and also promoting new products and services you have. I enjoy every aspect of my business and I appreciate each and every customer, but I also have to learn that I don't need to buy every font ever made! What types of services/products do you offer through Niknee Designs? I have a wide range of products and services and as most pieces are custom orders, I do a lot of one-off products, which allows each piece to be customised and personalised. I create anything from wedding stationery and wedding and event signage, nursery and kids’ room decor, hand painted traditional signwriting and logo design, including brochures and other promotional material. I have hand painted logos and designs on wine barrels, brick walls and more recently, the Herd Bar caravan it's great to see the art of traditional signwriting

e’ve since found out that Craig can not only shoot stunning landscapes, but has a whole portfolio of work that includes portraiture, boudoir, fine art and product shots. Craig has honed his skill behind the lens both in Australia and while growing up in Hong Kong, and we’re proud to showcase his work! Hi Craig. What brought you to the beautiful New England area - and which part of it do you call "home"? I moved to Armidale in September 2010, transferring down from Far North Queensland, where I worked with Telstra CountryWide. It was a massive difference in both culture and climate, and whilst I’ve adjusted to the cultural differences, the New England winter has seen my jumper collection grow from one item to one cupboard full! Where did your journey "behind the lens" begin? I started studying photography in 1988, whilst at high school in Hong Kong. We used the “old school” 35 mm film SLRs back then and developed all our own black and white film and pictures in the school’s 20 enlarger darkroom. I still have my first camera and the lenses, a Yashica, and it’s still in perfect working order.

And thanks to the social media phenomenon, I maintain contact with my photography teacher, Richard Abrahall, who’s currently enjoying retirement in the UK. with abandoned buildings and some fantastic historic architecture. There are hidden glens and lakes teeming with wildlife. There’s not a bad place to shoot! The kids and I enjoy walking around both Dumaresq Dam and Lake Inverell, where there is always an abundance of birdlife and thickets of vivid green sneakily hidden in the hushed, earthy tones of the eucalypt scrub. There is an intrinsic beauty in everything, and it’s that momentary epiphany that inspires a shot. The “golden hour” is always the best time to shoot landscapes, and in New England it’s no different - especially when capturing the autumn hues. Personalised photo hunting expeditions is something we are looking to offer in the near future. What are some projects you've worked on recently that you're especially proud of? Back in January, I was lucky enough to have news.com.au pick up one of images of the super blue blood moon and include it in their breaking news, and science and technology sections. Two of my more recent portrait shoots have produced some images both I and the models
involved are particularly happy with. I’ve been extremely lucky to have worked with some wonderful people, three of whom are Kirrah, Miss Alexis and Tiffany - all models I’ll be working with again in the coming months. We (Illumination’s very talented video editor, Dominique and I) have a new project underway that will be a series of photo-journalistic documentaries … so stay tuned! Considering you're able to organise quite a wide range of photo shoots, what skills do you find you use most - whether you're doing detailed closeups of food, or you're out and about taking nature shots? Planning is the key component with 90% of shoots; there are always the spontaneous 10% that you can’t predict, but that’s a lot of fun as well. Having contingency plans and keeping an open mind will usually see the successful completion of any shoot. But when travelling for a shoot - I pack everything! You can’t be too prepared! When conducting a modelling shoot, the pre-planning is imperative, and a large part of that is constant communication with the model, the stylist and
the hair and makeup artist (HMUA). As with all photography, the key elements are light and composition. We all use them in different ways to achieve different results, and it’s as relevant when you’re snapping a picture on your smart phone, as it is to setting up the tripod for a long exposure shot at night. How much time do you spend on post production work? Post production time can vary a lot, depending The kids and I enjoy walking on the images and the around both Dumaresq result you want to achieve. Dam and Lake Inverell, I try to minimise post where there is always an production, by bracketing abundance of birdlife and when shooting. But thickets of vivid green generally, if you only sneakily hidden in the hushed, tweak a few of the basics earthy tones of the eucalypt scrub. (like white balance and contrast) it should only be a couple of minutes per image. What are your dreams/goals - where would you like to see your photographic career heading in future? The overriding goal is to capture beautiful images. It’s a reward in itself to see the smile on a client’s face when they see their pictures.
A more immediate goal is to teach my two amazing boys (Dax and Nate) how to compose and capture images. Digitally first, then we’ll move to the technicalities of the SLR (and the dark room). Ultimately it is to get “THAT” shot! The image that will become your photographic legacy - a capture on which you can hang your hat (this is an ongoing quest.) Photography is a passion and is something that will always be a part of my life. Where can we see more of your work, or find out more about you? eith’s a qualified personal trainer and is inspired by helping others work on their fitness too! As the New Year begins, if you’re feeling like you need to work on your health and fitness … Keith can help. Kilts are optional! You're a recent "tree-changer". What brought you to Armidale from Port Macquarie? I spent a couple of years growing up in the New England, and since then I’ve felt a calling to the area. Coming here for holidays always seemed like I was coming home. The plan was eventually to move back this way, so when a couple of opportunities came up, it was like it was all falling into place - and we made the move. What have you loved most about living and working in the New England so far? One of the big things is that I get to see a lot more of my brother, who also lives in Armidale. After 25 years of not seeing much of each other, it’s good to get together with him a lot more regularly. Everything about the New England has been great - the adventure, the landscapes, even the weather (all four seasons in the couple of months we’ve been here). The people are great too; I think I’ve met at least one person each day I’ve been here. What's your personal fitness story? I guess I’ve always been fairly active. In my late teens and early 20s I was into martial arts, boxing, and weight training. As is the case with a lot of people though, a combination of

a busy lifestyle, kids, and poor diet led to my fitness levels declining. When I was in my mid30s, I suddenly realised that I was no longer that 20-odd year-old kid who could eat fast food and drink beer six nights a week and not put on a single kilogram. That was a bit of a wakeup call for me, and I started focusing on my health and fitness. I have a “no excuses” policy for my personal fitness - no matter how busy my day is, or what the weather is doing, I have to find a way to make it happen. I’m now 45, and I’m fitter than I was when I was in my 20s. And I still enjoy a beer … just not six nights a week. What fitness/business qualifications do you hold? While on my own fitness journey, I discovered that I enjoyed helping others with their fitness. To fuel my growing passion for fitness and quest for more knowledge, I completed my Certificate III and IV in Fitness, which qualified me as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. I have also completed a Level 1 Run Leader course through Athletics Australia, and Senior First Aid Course, as well as a Certificate III in Business. OK ... people are going to ask. What's with the kilt? Well … The “Kiltman” started off as a charity fundraising idea. I came up with this idea to raise money for Legacy; I would run 10 km in a kilt each day during Legacy Week. By the end of the week, I’d raised nearly $3,000, which was far more than I’d expected. After that, the kilt came out every now and then for a bit of fun. Then at the start of 2017, I set myself a goal to run 52 half marathons in
my kilt that year. By the end of the year, the “Kiltman” was quite well known around Port Macquarie. As well as Legacy, I’ve also worn my kilt to support Soldier On and The Movember Foundation, and also for community events that promote a healthy, active lifestyle. What are some of the most common reactions you get from people when they see you’re wearing a kilt? The most common question I get is, “What’s under your kilt?” (To which I give the obvious answer, “Shoes and socks”.) Some of the reactions I get from people are great. When I go in a running event, the support I get from the crowd and other runners is phenomenal. It’s an amazing experience when you’re running down the finish chute at the end of a half marathon, and the crowd is yelling, “Go Kiltman!” One time, after a particularly tough running event, another runner came and shook my hand and thanked me. He said that he was doing it tough, but then he saw me and thought, “Well, if he can do it in a kilt …”. That was a very moving moment for me and contributed to my desire to become a Personal Trainer. What are some of the sessions you can offer people, to help them improve their fitness? I offer tailored personal training plans to suit your lifestyle and goal. No matter how busy you are, there’s always a way to fit some exercise in. As I mentioned before, I have a no excuses policy for my personal fitness, so if you have a goal, I can help you to make it happen.
As well as one on one personal training, I also run group fitness classes, a run workshop, and starting early 2019 I will be running regular classes from the Armidale PCYC. I can also do Personal Training sessions at the PCYC gym. I’ve also teamed up with Healthy Inspirations Armidale for their new “Healthy Him” programme for men and will be running classes along with Gayle Keene. You've been known to tackle quite a few random challenges - such as running a marathon in full highland dress (including jacket, hat, bowtie and kilt) and completing an obstacle course that involved crossing dams and climbing ropes (also in a very wet and soggy kilt!) What are some of your plans for 2019? I’ve already signed up for my first running event for 2019 - the Port Macquarie Running Festival. I’ll be tackling the Treble Breakwall Buster, which consists of a half marathon, a 10 km, and a 5 km run, all in one morning. I’ll definitely be signing up for local events like the Duval Dam Buster, and Armidale Fun Run again. And I’m pretty keen to have a crack at the Warwick Pentath Run - five events over two days, all adding up to 42.2 km. Apart from that, I’ll see what other challenges crop up. Where can we follow your fitness journey, or sign up for one of your classes? You can follow my Facebook page, Kiltman Fitness Armidale, type in #GetFitWithTheKiltman on Instagram, or give me a ring on 0432 992 812. Thanks Keith. Interview: Jo Robinson. New England focus. 11

We were fortunate enough to experience four of the big five: elephants, rhinos, a lioness and buffalo. During a Mokoro (dugout canoe) ride through the Okavango Delta, we experienced tracking a wild elephant on foot, with the polers guiding us through the scrub. This was an amazing experience, which gave us a true appreciation of how amazing these animals are in their own environment. SWIFF 2019 dishes up two full weeks of screen experiences for its fourth festival, screening over 60 different feature films from 20 countries, plus a big line-up of film industry guests, events, galas, film premieres, parties, and screen culture experiences.
S
WIFF’s 48-page printed program is in cafés, bars, pubs, and theatres throughout Northern NSW. It has the rundown on all the films and events available for film lovers. They get snapped up pretty fast, so if you can’t find one, download the SWIFF 2019 mobile app on your iPhone or Android. It’s a big program full of hidden gems, so we’ve broken it down to 10 things to see and do at SWIFF 2019. 1. SEE SODA_JERK - IN TOWN FROM NEW YORK This year’s Opening Night Gala brings the controversial video mash-up artists Soda_Jerk from New York to Coffs, screening Terror Nullius - a film unwriting what it is to be a modern day Australian, cut together from clips of famous Aussie movies. It’s a film so controversial, their grant funders pulled support just days before the world premiere, calling it “Un-Australian”. See it - and make up your own mind. 2. SWIFF LIVE: O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Bellingen Bluegrass band The Mid North will play a live soundtrack to accompany the Coen Brothers’ classic O Brother, Where Art Thou?, giving it a musical re-imagining live on stage, along with the film. Two shows available (Jan 17 and 20) - sells out fast. 3. Eternity’s Gate. Keep an eye out at the Oscars for this one. 4. ATTEND A PREMIERE There’s something special about being one of the first people to see a film on the big screen after it’s fresh out of post-production. This year SWIFF hosts the World Premiere of late-life transgender documentary, Becoming Colleen (with a Coffs Harbour twist!) There are four Australian premieres also on the cards: gripping personal human trafficking doco Sisters For Sale; a story about the women fighting their own war inside the Nicaraguan revolution in Las Sandanistas!; big screen surf epic Emocean; and the new documentary about the rogue New York judge changing the lives of sex workers in Blowin’ Up. See them first at SWIFF! 5. GRAB YOUR PASS AND PLAN YOUR SWIFF Like to be a little impulsive with your moviewatching? Don’t want to have to pick them all at once? The good thing about SWIFF’s festival passes is that you can buy a pack of tickets (six, 12, or 24), save some money, and pick your films when you like. All the sessions are subject to availability - so if there are ones you really want to see, better get in fast before they’re gone. 6. Some under-the-radar films took out other big gongs, including Lynne Ramsay’s gritty crime thriller, You Were Never Really Here (screens Jan 11 and 19) winning Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) at Cannes, and Tolga Karacelik’s Turkish family roadtrip comedy Butterflies winning Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize. For other award winners, check out the program. 7. BUMPER CROP OF AUSSIE FILMS It’s been a great year for Aussie films, and SWIFF has put them all in one place for you. The Australian Cinema program has doubled in size this year, with fourteen different new Aussie features and docos screening. Included is audience magnet Backtrack Boys (it won SFF, MIFF, and BBFF audience awards), Coffs latelife gender transition doco Becoming Colleen, mental health supernatural doco Ghosthunter, Tassie fiction-doco hybrid Under The Cover Of Cloud, controversial art film Terror Nullius, and Heath Davis’s new high school comedy, Book Week. 8. NEXTWAVE YOUTH FILM AWARDS Previously called the REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival, Nextwave has been busy running
filmmaking workshops across Regional NSW. The best 20 regional NSW youth short films will be screened at the inaugural Nextwave Youth Film Awards on Jan 18th at C.ex Coffs. Over $40,000 in prizes will be awarded on the night. Comedies, animations, dramas, docos, and other bite-sized six-minute shorts will have their premiere on the night - including many local films! 9. $8 TICKETS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE With such a focus on youth filmmaking at SWIFF, the organisers have subsidised tickets for all festivalgoers under 25 down to only $8 for all regular session tickets! 10. HEAD TO THE FESTIVAL HUBS Want to mingle with the festival’s filmmaker guests? Head into Element Bar in Coffs and No. 5 Church Street in Bellingen, the SWIFF Festival Hubs. rinking tea after meals is a controversial subject. Studies suggest that drinking tea is good for the digestive system, but its caffeine content may hinder absorption of nutrients in the digestive system. According to studies, having tea after your meal relieves gases and flatulence in the stomach. But, not all tea types are the same. Herbal tea and green tea contain high amounts of polyphenols and antioxidants that help in digestion. These teas help in making the digestive system work more
Where
efficiently, as they stimulate production of bile, saliva and gastric juices. They also have powerful anti-inflammatory agents that help reduce digestive complications. Some polyphenolic compounds like catechins increase the activity of digestive enzymes, while pepsin helps in the breakdown of dietary protein in the system. Some Reasons why Drinking Tea with Meals is Not Good Studies have shown that compounds like phenolic that are present in tea can interfere with iron absorption, as they form iron complexes in the stomach. It is
recommended that you eat food rich in Vitamin C and iron if you wish to drink tea after your meal. Consuming tea after the meal decreases availability of catechins in the body. Coffee and tea should be avoided at least an hour before and after meals, because Tannin present in tea and coffee interfere with iron absorption. Although tea and coffee help in relieving muscular and mental fatigue, it must be consumed moderately. So, if you wish to drink tea or coffee after your meal, choose between ginger or green tea, as both of these help in digesting food.

Farm
If you happen to see a group of curious, multi-coloured alpacas out for a walk in Invergowrie’s beautiful countryside, you may just have observed some of Altitude Farm’s star residents! Altitude Farm may just be one of New England’s best kept secrets …
R
ianna Feenstra explains how her alpacas and sheep not only produce the most beautiful fleece, but how this fleece is then worked by hand and turned into beautiful products that everyone can purchase and enjoy… What's the history behind Altitude Farm and what's your role there? I founded Altitude Farm in November of 2016, when I was in Year 11 in high school. My family was originally from Newcastle before moving to Armidale, and we had bought a few alpacas and sheep as pets when we made the move in 2016 to Armidale. When shearing time came around, we had no clue what to do with the fleece our animals had produced, so I began experimenting and started making wet felted cushions; next came dryer balls and felted soap. As I got better, I found I had too many products for just my family and friends to use, so I decided to open up an Etsy store to sell what I was making - and it seemed to take off. Since then I have expanded and now also sell alpaca and sheep fleece from our animals, as well as local farms, and have increased my handmade product options too. So really, Altitude Farm was started as a way for me to make the products I loved, without filling my house to the brim with too many cushions and such that we just couldn’t use. What types/roughly how many animals do you look after on the farm? We have six alpacas of varying colour, as well as two Romney cross Corriedale sheep, one being
black and the other moorit (which is a brown colour). I use the fleece from our alpacas and sheep to make products, as well as selling some of their fleece. We also have some chickens, turkeys and ducks that my younger brother breeds and sells on Facebook as Altitude Poultry and Eggs, so our farm is turning into a bit of a family business. What are some of the most enjoyable (or conversely, challenging!) things about raising alpacas? One of the most enjoyable things about alpacas would just be watching them out in the paddock, as each of them has such different and quirky personalities. One of my favourite things to do with the alpacas is take them for walks around our area; they love getting out and exploring and although they walk incredibly slowly, it is so funny to see their reactions to new things in their environment. Why do you think alpaca fleece is so popular and versatile? There are a number of reasons why alpaca fleece is so popular and versatile; these include variety of colour (for hand crafters), softness, it’s hypoallergenic, the warmth (it’s warmer than sheep fleece). And the advantage for hand spinners is that it doesn’t need to be cleaned prior to spinning, like a sheep fleece does. How often do you shear your alpacas and sheep... and what's involved with turning the fleece into usable yarn? Our alpacas get sheared once a year around November, and our sheep are sheared twice a
ALTITUDE FARM WAS STARTED AS A WAY FOR ME TO MAKE THE PRODUCTS I LOVED, WITHOUT FILLING MY HOUSE TO THE BRIM WITH TOO MANY CUSHIONS AND SUCH THAT WE JUST COULDN’T USE.
year - due to their breed growing long wool quickly. In terms of turning the fleece into usable yarn, an alpaca fleece can be spun basically straight off the alpaca, but we card ours and then spin; the dirt gets washed out when setting the yarn. For our sheep, because of the lanolin, the fleece needs to be carefully washed to remove the lanolin, whilst maintaining lock structure. We then card or use handcombs to prepare the fibre for spinning. As our sheep are long wool breeds, spinning their fleece is a dream. As can be seen from our products though, we tend to felt our fibre more than spin, and both our alpacas and sheep fleece felt wonderfully. You have an online shop, where you sell the products you make on the farm. What are some of the most popular items you sell? Yes, I have an online store on Etsy called Altitude Farm Store. The three most popular items are felted cushions, raw fleece and dryer balls. Our felted cushions are one of our most popular items, especially the fluffy cushions, as they give off the look of being a skin; however, they only use the fleece of the animal. In fact, many people put in custom orders for cushions. Our alpaca felted dryer balls also seem to be quite a hit - particularly in the United States - as they are a reusable alternative to dryer sheets. The felted dryer balls help with static and drying
time when using a dryer machine, and essential oils can also be added to them, which will infuse the scent into your clothes when drying. Raw fleece as well is one of our main sellers, both domestically and internationally, as it makes it easier for individual crafters to obtain fleece in varying quantities, colours, microns etc. which they can’t get from manufactured products. Of particular importance in all of this providence; people are really wanting to know exactly where their items come from, and in our case we can even name and give photos of the animals they came from. How important is it to you to ensure your farm operates sustainably, now and into the future? Sustainability is very important, as it is one of the factors that customers want from a small seller and farm like mine. It helps us distinguish ourselves from larger alternatives and is a point of difference. Where can we buy your products, or find out more about what you do? Our products can be bought on Etsy through our store Altitude Farm Store, and we also have Instagram @altitudefarmlife and Facebook @altitudefarm where I share photos of the animals, products, products in work and sales that the store is having. Thanks Rianna. Interview: Jo Robinson. New England focus. 23

hat would you like to see in 2019? I’ll throw some of my hopes into the hat, in no particular order. • A higher standard of
politics. • Recognition our lives depend on our environment. Those involved with agriculture are, on the whole, the most aware. • Acceptance of climate change (ask David Attenborough). • Recognition renewable energy is sensible and cheaper and can give farmers needed income. • Awareness NSW is reportedly killing 10 million native animals yearly from habitat loss and that yes, this does matter! Factually, biodiversity is our life-support system. • Assurance big companies act, so what befell Beattie Alvarez is not possible, when AGL took an unreasonable time to agree that her small shop’s June/September electricity bill of $7,200.09 should have been $770.13. Big companies make chasing them unconscionably hard, and it shouldn’t have to involve media intervention! • Positive, speedy, do-able action to put our best foot (feet?) forward in the presentation, promotion and sustainable growth of our region. No outside consultants. If we aren’t as effective as others in promoting ourselves, why should we expect to be listened to? • Acceptance employment opportunities are changing, and with our schools, university and TAFE we should capitalise on the change to service industries as prime employers, while technology contributes to boosting progress. • Hope that when our leaders talk about other countries they don’t always only talk about their monetary value to us. • Acceptance of the importance of regional sport in promoting health and also as an important economic contributor e.g. Armidale figures for 2018 indicate $17 million. • It’s important rural Australians are across international market trends as they happen. It’s disturbing that the UK’s Marks & Spencer chain was promoting Christmas sandwiches including “marinated fake meat”. The MLA Europe’s fightback includes “Australian Good Meat -
doesn’t just happen. It’s produced intentionally in a way that cares about Australia’s livestock, environment and consumers”. • Finally, political correctness - how far should it go? I’m conscious I often talk about “hugs” … goodness - don’t want to appear in court. UNE’s Dr. Lorina Barker is a friend, and I’m thrilled she’s received an ARC grant to track three Aboriginal Songlines, exploring their importance and adding pieces to the jigsaw that is the history of our country. The coming generations are our future, and we don’t listen at our/their peril. Don’t let’s flood them with jargon and layers of bureaucracy, impeding progress and quality of life. A recent SMH article called for recognition of the Humanities in the new employment reality. Jessica Irvine wrote (8/11/18) “Increasingly the business world is realising that the skills of most value in the new economy will be those of critical and analytical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills - skills that humanities delivers in spades”. We have the institutions here. Good teachers bring us these skills, and should be rewarded as the frontline, far ahead of the new service “fluff” designations of “onboarding Academic Concierges and Learning Designers”. Let’s keep it simple and strong. Good heavens! What a list I’m making! Obviously everyone has different wishes and hopes for 2019. Let’s understand our opportunities and say “Yes” to what is best for our lives, our families and the future of our beautiful fragile globe. Susie Dunn. p.s.1. The end of 2018 brought two special presents for Armidale - our MP Adam Marshall’s cut-through achieved probable retention of the Old Court House for the community, and the reborn Tatts Hotel - opening progressively - stars a glamorous restaurant and brings a chic international style to the region. And, Guyra sees the tomato farm’s $67 million expansion starting, taking it to 40 hectares. A big employer. p.s.2. Planning for the new Colour New England Street Arts Festival on April 6 should create a fresh chance to kick-back and enjoy. Want to participate? Contact Hayley Ward on 6770 3824. p.s.3. Tattersalls HOTEL Restaurant Grand Opening

ell us a little about yourself. I’m originally from France, which I left when I was 18 years old to start my journey as a chef. I started out in Paris when I was 17, and then moved to London. I stayed for about three years; following that, I moved to Israel. After Israel I moved on to luxury cruise liners. I still remember (it was when I was 24, so a little bit of time has passed) arriving in New York at 6am every Saturday to see the sunrise between the Twin Towers; it was a really beautiful sight. I then moved back to London, stayed another few years, then Zimbabwe, Denmark and back to London to start in 5 star hotels, working at places like the Dorchester and the Savoy Hotels. I really love the history that goes along with these places.
I was then asked to be part of a team in Dubai at some of the most beautiful hotels, including Grosvenor House and the Palace Downtown as Executive Chef, with up to 150 chefs below me. The hotels in Dubai are huge, sometimes catering for over 1,000 people at a time. After Dubai, I did work in some amazing restaurants, cities and locations around the world, such as St. Regis in Doha and the Fairmount Peace in Shanghai. Now I have moved with my wife to Armidale, Australia, at the Tattersalls Hotel. Her family had moved to Australia around 15 years ago, so we thought that we would experience Australia too. What are your plans for Tattersalls Hotel? Look, I may be a French chef, but I don’t really do much French cuisine! Over all the restaurants I have run, I have developed dishes that really work

Walcha It is NOT A WELL KEPT SECRET that Walcha is renowned for its art! The vast array of renowned artists that hail from here have made their mark and gained respect in the art-world through a diversity of genres; with works in landscape, abstract, portrait, large and small scale sculpture both in wood and metal, ceramics, still life, painting, sketching and etching - you name it, and it can be found somewhere in Walcha! Through the incredible depth of artists who call Walcha home, the Walcha Arts Committee was formed; they have shared their knowledge, expertise and generously given their time to local art projects such as the Open Air Gallery (OAG), from a single sculpture in 1996 to now, with 56 sculptures popping up every turn. The latest project to procure more art for the town, community and regional NSW was the Walcha Sculpture Symposium, held in September 2018. This was made possible by way of a Regional Arts Fund grant, through Regional Arts NSW, the generosity of the local community and supporters of the arts from surrounding communities. Five Artists | Four Sculptures | Seven Days was the event concept - The Symposium artists: Matt Pilkington, Armidale; Dale Miles, Sydney; Caz Haswell, Sydney;
Billabong Zoo Billabong Zoo is delighted to announce the birth of our first African Lion cub, to parents Milo and Misty, on 27th August. “Amari”, meaning “miracle” and “strong” was born at 7pm. Nameer Davis and Barbara Penrose, Brisbane - became artists-in-residence and worked in a pop-up “studio” at the showground under the interested and watchful eye of the community. The works from the Sculpture Symposium have now been installed as part of the OAG. Self guiding brochures are available from the Visitor Information Centre. | (02) 6774 2460 | www.walchansw.com.au
Amari’s birth is exciting for the zoo and local community and incredibly important for the Australasian breeding program for African Lions. Misty and Milo were imported from South Africa in 2016, meaning that Amari is not related to any of the lions at other zoos within Australia. In the future when he’s ready to start his own pride, his genetics will be really valuable to the breeding program.
For now however, Amari will continue to explore his new enclosure and build his confidence meeting and greeting the guests. He can be seen enjoying playtime with his keepers at the conclusion of each lion presentation at 10:30am, 1pm and 3:30pm daily. Come and see our adult lions up-close, enjoy Amari’s playful antics and hear all about his birth at the zoo, plus learn more about African Lions and their challenges in the wild. c t electric p/l guyra C T Electric is a small, country based electrical contractor, having operated in Guyra for 44 years, relying on the rural industry for the majority of our work. We were successful in winning the contract for the main power installation for Costa’s Tomato Exchange - Stage 1 (GH1) of the Elm St development. At that time, it was possibly the largest contract we had ever undertaken. This was followed by contracts for Stage 2 and Stage 3 (GH2), all of which were successfully completed. We were then requested to carry out the electrical maintenance for Costa’s project; this has been a rewarding experience for all our staff, repairing equipment which most electricians will seldom see. We were involved with the development of the new project north of Guyra (GH3). This was the largest contract that we have undertaken, being involved with the design and installation of the entire electrical system - an experience our staff wouldn’t have gained without the support of the Costa group. Costa’s support to our firm and to the wider community of Guyra has had an enormous benefit. We look forward to working with Costa’s on their future development (GH4), a project which will bring more advancement to the community of Guyra.

Back in 1986, the first Guyra Lamb and Potato Festival was organised, and THIRTY-THREE YEARS ON, THE FESTIVAL IS STILL GOING STRONG! The aim of the festival has always been to promote Guyra’s industry and lifestyle.
hese days, the festival draws tens of thousands of visitors, who come to enjoy the festivities, sample the delicious food and marvel at the statue of the Big Lamb that Guyra is famous for. This year’s festival will be held from 16 - 27 January at Rotary Park, and we thought it’d be a great opportunity to have a chat with one of the festival founders, Frank Presnell. Frank shares his unique perspective … Hi Frank. What’s your background in Guyra? I’ve lived in Guyra for 73 years. I was born in Gunnedah, but lived down around Coonabarabran. I moved to Guyra when I was 25. My wife, Mavis Saunders, was a Guyra girl, and I met her while I was in Coonabarabran. We moved to Guyra in 1945 - at the time, I had two draft horses, a saddle horse and 100 quid! How did the idea come about to start the Lamb and Potato Festival? I’ve been farming my whole life - I grew potatoes and a lot of peas. The late Royce Newbury and I were talking about starting a local festival - a lot of people talked about it actually, but no one seemed really interested in getting one going. Then I heard a whisper that Glen Innes may have been going to start up a festival, and I thought, we’d have to beat them! I suggested Royce come and have dinner with us one night to discuss the idea of a festival - and he did. So really, the Lamb and Potato Festival was born in my dining room! We knew we’d have to form a committee, and we knew we really wanted to promote both lamb and potatoes. There was a fairly big potato industry in Guyra in those days - bigger than it is now. So, the committee was formed, and it consisted of me, my wife
Mavis, Royce Newbury, Robert Gordon, Cecil - made us a model of the lamb and brought Lockyer, Dorothy Lockyer, Jim Williamson, it up. I thought it was a terrible looking thing Gloria George, and Ron Leven. That was 33 (laughs) and I told him lambs didn’t look like years ago! that! I organise the lambs every year … but these days we buy our lambs. I’ve bought some from the sale yards, and my son, John, is a prime lamb breeder, so he’s been supplying lambs too. Some years we kill up to 70 or 80 lambs. Thanks Frank. The Costa Group is Australia’s leading grower, packer and marketer of fresh fruit & vegetables, operating in five core produce categories, including glasshouse tomatoes, berries, mushrooms, citrus and avocados.
by comparison. In a field crop, 1 megalitre of water produces seven tonnes of tomatoes, compared 38.4 tonnes in the glasshouse.
With operations in more than 30 regional and rural communities across every state of Australia, the township of Guyra in the New England region has played a significant part in Costa’s success and growth through the company’s investment in glasshouse tomato growing.
Costa recently announced plans to add to its Guyra glasshouse capacity with a new $67 million 10 hectare development. This investment will bring Costa’s total glasshouse growing area in Guyra to 40 hectares and create an additional 150 new jobs. A new nursery will also be established in which Costa will trial new varities with the aim of commercialising them and bringing them to market.
Over the past 15 years, Costa has invested in excess of $100 million to establish 30 hectares of glasshouse in Guyra. Growing truss, cocktail and snacking variety tomatoes, Costa’s operations provide employment for over 650 people and supply year round product to the major Australian retailers. Guyra’s elevated location and stable climate makes it an ideal location for growing glasshouse tomatoes, which are grown out of the soil in substrate. The efficiency of glasshouse tomato crops compares very favourably to those grown in the field. For example a tomato crop grown in the field produces an average of seven kilograms of tomatoes per square metre. This compares to 65 kilograms of tomatoes produced per square metre in a glasshouse. The length of a tomato glasshouse crop is also longer than that of a field crop. The average tomato field crop length is seven months compared to 11.2 months for a glasshouse. The yield per megalitre of water is also impressive

Water security and efficiency of use will continue to be a key focus of Costa’s glasshouse growing operations. The new glasshouse will be specifically designed to be water self-sufficient. Rainfall will be captured from the glasshouse roofs, buildings, hard stands and land within a defined site perimeter. Holding dams will then store the captured water with 10mm of rainfall on a 10 hectare glasshouse roof the equivalent of 1 megalitre of water captured.
“Water security and efficiency of use will continue to be a key focus of Costa’s glasshouse growing operations.”
SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY. In 2018 Costa worked with the Guyra Sports Council to establish the inaugural Guyra Community Sports Grants Program. The grants program is aimed at encouraging sporting activity throughout the local Guyra community. Costa has also become the naming rights sponsor of the Guyra sports ground.

seekers can set their device to receive auto job alerts meaning they are notified when a vacancy matches their job preferences. This removes the need to regularly search the internet, newspapers or noticeboards for available roles.
It takes a large team with a diverse range of skills and qualifications to run the glasshouses. This includes growers, harvesters, packers, supply planners, despatch operators, agronomists, maintenance staff, safety specialists, quality assurance experts, human resource staff, administrative officers, project managers and research and development staff. This means there are a range of career pathways and opportunities available at both Guyra and across Costa’s other operations.
EDUCATION. A recent focus for Costa has been developing and supporting education initiatives in the Guyra area in order to promote horticulture as a career pathway for local students.
In January 2019 two full time apprentices from the local area will commence work in Costa’s glasshouse maintenance team, specialising in auto electrical and mechanical engineering. It is anticipated that a further two apprenticeships will be introduced during the year.
Beginning in 2019 the Costa Tomatoes Tertiary Scholarships will assist a local Guyra Central High School student with educational and living expenses during their university studies. The Scholarship is valued at $16,000 over a four year degree, or $4,000 per year. Scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity to undertake paid employment with Costa during the year, in particular over academic holiday periods.
Costa is also working with the local Jobs Australia agency on a number of employment programs, including targeting highly disadvantaged job seekers in the area, the introduction of a Refugee Employment Program and becoming a host for the New Careers for Aboriginal People Program.
Costa has also been working with the Guyra Central School by hosting Year 12 Biology and Chemistry students, allowing them to undertake in-depth study in the glasshouses as part of their HSC assessment. Costa is also supporting the school’s proposal to participate in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, which will involve the building of gardens and a new greenhouse at the school.
In November 2018 Costa launched its new online recruitment portal which enables all job seekers to register and apply online for vacancies 24/7 using their smartphone, tablet or PC. Job
Recent activity with St Mary of the Angels Guyra has included Costa’s sponsorship of the school swimming program; the Year 6 leadership day held in Armidale and end of year school awards.
COMMUNITY. For a business such as Costa to be successful in a regional area such as Guyra, it is critically important to for it to be able to work cooperatively and productively with the local community. Costa takes this responsibility seriously as it is not just about providing employment and economic benefit, but also being actively involved in supporting the social fabric of the local community. Other recent community activities have included Costa’s sponsorship of the ‘Feel the Magic’ camp in Armidale for children who have lost a parent, support for the Guyra Men’s Health evening and numerous donations of fresh produce to many deserving charities and community organisations across the region.
GENERAL EMPLOYMENT STATS. •

Local Guyra artists Brian Irving and Kay Smith are once again preparing for another art exhibition in Guyra. It will feature their own works, as well as their popular collaborative works.
B
rian has been painting for many years and has won numerous awards. Kay has also painted for a long time, studying Fine Art and Design and having many commissions. Together, they have combined their different styles on to one canvas; with Brian’s Aboriginal art and Kay’s realist style, they have created very unique and special paintings which take many hours to produce. Kay loves the New England light and scenery to paint and uses this in her own works and in the combination paintings. Brian then paints
his story around this in his Aboriginal style, using beautiful, vibrant colours. The pair first painted together in 2014 for an exhibition at the Keeping Place in Armidale, which was very successful. Last year they had their second exhibition in Guyra, which sold out on opening night. This combined art exhibition will be officially opened on Friday 18th January 2019, 6:30pm at the Gala Centre in Guyra. The exhibition will remain open to the public until Monday 28th January. Opening hours will be 9am to 5pm weekdays, and 10am until 3pm weekends and public holidays.

Appointing an Independent Executor When a person makes a Will, they need to appoint someone to administer the estate. This person is known as the executor, and their role is to carry out the directions contained in the Will once the person who made the Will has passed away. Many people see it as a compliment to appoint a relative or close friend as the executor of their Will. However, being an executor can be a complex and demanding role. The reality is that often people nominated as executor are unsure of what is expected of them and can find the role is a burden. As an executor, it is important to understand the legal, financial and taxation implications of any actions you may take. It is particularly important to maintain independence if there is the added complication of disputes.
Finalising a person’s affairs while grieving can also be daunting and emotionally challenging. It can take months or possibly years if the estate is complex or involves disputes, ongoing trusts or life interests. You can appoint NSW Trustee & Guardian to act as your independent executor. NSW Trustee & Guardian has been administering estates for nearly 100 years and are experts in estate management. The benefit of appointing NSW Trustee & Guardian as executor is that you are entrusting responsibility to a party who hold specialist knowledge and skills required for the role. To talk to NSW Trustee & Guardian about executor services, contact our Port Macquarie branch on 1300 721 296 or visit: www.tag.nsw.gov.au

t has been used in Australia by dentists to treat anxious patients since 1847, with the technique we use today being refined back in the 1940s. Its long history of use has given the gas a proven safety record, being safe for use in patients with heart conditions, those on blood thinning medications, poor kidney function, children, and the elderly. In the dental office, the gas is administered by appropriately trained dentists through a small “hood” which rests over the nose, leaving the mouth and eyes completely unobstructed. The gas is delivered mixed with oxygen, with the percentage being “titrated” (adjusted) to a level specific for each patient to reach their lowest effective dose. This is different to the “happy gas” used for mothers during labour (Entonox) which is delivered as a fixed dose of 50% oxygen to 50% nitrous oxide. The dosages used in the dental office are often much lower than this, sitting at around 35 - 40%. This variable dosage allows a more comfortable and controlled level of sedation for the patient.
“
The optimum level of sedation is reached slowly, with the dentist monitoring the patient’s breathing and level of alertness. Patients can expect a feeling of warmth, a pleasant tingling throughout the arms and legs, feelings of heavy limbs or floating in

I’m 15 years old, and I attend Year 10 at O’Connor Catholic College. My whole life I have been involved in sport growing up - mostly swimming and football. I have always been involved with football, whether it be touch, league tag or rugby league, as I’ve been around it my whole life. This month FOCUS introduces MATT MEEHAN, OWNER AND PROPRIETOR OF AGBIS, AN ESTABLISHED FINANCIAL CONSULTING BUSINESS THAT SUPPORTS AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISE, headquartered in Armidale. T
ell us a little about yourself. I’m married to Rose, a born and bred New Englander, and together we have three beautiful children, Claudia, Daisy and Sam. We live on a small farm out of town with a few cattle and a lot of kangaroos, along with our dogs, Charlie and Zip. I came to Armidale after finishing Ag college and completed an accounting degree, after which I worked for a local accountancy practice for a couple of years. I then relocated to Sydney and then Inverell for several years, before returning to Armidale. I spent some time in banking and financial planning, before setting up my own practice, Agbis, in 2011. What drew you to Armidale? Being originally from the city but spending time working in the bush, I found Armidale had a good balance of city amenities and country lifestyle - a bit cosmopolitan with the university. What led you to start up Agbis? I’m somewhat independently minded, and I had a desire to own and operate my own business on my own terms and as much as possible, to provide advice free from conflict advice that is in the best interests of my clients and not predicated on a potential commission. This is surprisingly challenging in our current industry. What does Agbis do? People are really busy in their day to day lives and often don’t take a step back and assess 50 New England focus.
where they are and where they would like to be in the future. Ultimately, we provide financial advice that provides the foundations for our clients to achieve their goals and work with them as life changes. Our advice includes life insurance to protect our clients, their families and their business, investment and superannuation, succession and estate planning, as well as accounting and taxation services. It’s a holistic approach, so everything works together and is designed for my clients’ individual needs. You’ve recently launched a new arm of your business called Lifesolver; what is it? Lifesolver provides cloud-based financial coaching and is supported by an amazing app. It enables people to take control of their own financial affairs, giving them access to their own life portal, putting all their financial information in one place - cash flow, bank accounts, investments, superannuation, debts, credit cards, life insurance, and Wills. And for those with uncomplicated affairs, it also offers a create your own Will feature and an Executor Kit, with lots of additional more boring but useful features such as document storage. Along with it we give access to Kwidz, which is a free financial app for kids. The key to the Lifesolver app is that it is independent of any one bank or insurance provider, giving people quick and easy access to their whole financial life in one easy to access portal, phone, tablet or desktop, anytime and

anywhere. It’s designed to put you in control of your financial life. Why did you start Lifesolver? It arose from the fact that many people can’t afford customised personalised advice. I recognised a gap in the market, particularly for younger people, to make a good start with their financial decisions. It allows for financial coaching for people who aren’t running large businesses or are just starting out in life. Our clients can use it too, so we are always up-to-date with their financial position. What were your biggest challenges starting up? Building cash flow and managing the ongoing regulations associated with financial planning; there’s a lot of red tape. What advice would you give a business just starting out? Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Undertake a business plan, seek advice, do your homework. Most importantly, ask yourself the questions, “Do you have the passion for what it is you are about to embark on? Are you playing to your strengths and delegating your weaknesses?” What inspires you? Making a difference to people’s lives - in a good way.
Who inspires you? Warren Buffet, not just because he is a great investor, but he happens to be a great person with a lot of great advice. My personal favourite is: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” Where to from here? I’m officially launching Lifesolver in early 2019, as people’s finances are generally a mess postChristmas! If you’ve gone off track in December, what can you do to get back on track financially in January? There are a few things you can do. Write a list of your debts and prioritise how you are going to pay them off. Talk to your creditors and negotiate payment terms. It can be amazing how helpful people can be. Communicate with your bank, and don’t put it off if you are overdrawn. If you communicate, they are often so much more helpful. People don’t often have a cash flow problem; they have a spending problem. I recommend doing a budget for 2019 and save in advance or spread expenses such as Christmas gifts throughout the year. Thanks Matt.

ow long have you lived in the New England? I moved to the New England with my wife about 15 years ago. Upon moving here, we started the business Office Express from scratch. Since then we have developed a successful business serving the locals for all their office needs. What’s the best part about working in the Armidale Mall? Well, it’s the convenience of working in the Mall. It’s easy to visit all the shops you need in close proximity to each other. I’m looking forward to some of the changes planned for the Mall to enhance the vibrance.
What’s a typical day in the life of Jonathan? Opening up the store, greeting customers and receiving stock for the day. Then my day will vary; it could be serving customers, doing bookwork, making deliveries and general day to day tasks. So, when you’re not working, what can we find you doing? Look, work ties me up a fair bit, but in my limited spare time
I do love to get into the garden. Otherwise, I’ll be taking one of my boys around to sports. Where’s your go to place for a bite to eat or some good coffee? I could recommend the Fat Hare for coffee. When it comes to grabbing a bite to eat, my wife and I head over to the Fat Goose Crossing - always have a great lunch there! Thanks Jonathan.

Nationwide Property Brokers (NPB) in Port Macquarie reveals the changes to the market, and what it really means when investing in property in this dynamic and diverse area … now and for 2019. It’s been a bumper 2018 … and there’s more to come! Chrissy Jones spoke with Paul Loughland about the team’s achievements, what the team has to offer customers and what’s on the cards for 2019 …
P
aul, what sets you apart from others in the property industry, and what does this mean to your customers? We are very focused on the needs of our purchasers and vendors in a wide range of coastal markets. The unique point of difference at NPB is we also offer a customised property investment advisory service, helping people feel informed and confident about their property decisions, and helping people to grow their portfolio and wealth through property. This service, coupled with the ability to introduce property opportunities outside of our area, including the wider Mid North Coast and growth areas within NSW and QLD, broadens our expertise by understanding the property market on both a state and national level. This allows us to provide a solid, comprehensive knowledge base when helping our customers make important property decisions. Without our clients’ trust, we wouldn’t be who we are. From developers, to residential vendors and of course property investors and purchasers, we are super grateful to help and drive for results on a daily basis. Who are Nationwide Property Brokers? What do you do and offer? As the name of our business suggests, and as I mentioned earlier, we have experience in property right across our beautiful country. We help our customers secure or sell well positioned properties, saving them time and money and mitigating risk in the property process where possible. In saying that, we are extremely particular in what we offer our potential and existing customers. We aim to select properties that are quality and well located, often with a special feature … seaside, forest surrounds, views, hinterland, golf course estate developments, located near infrastructure and seniors’ lifestyle precincts … are prime examples. With this level of flexibility, skills, knowledge and understanding of the challenges and
