With dance, theatre, photography and singing training being the tip of the iceberg, these stylishly cool entrepreneurs are set up for teaching all ages, with fun and exciting lessons.

Mini Minstrels at NECOM is gearing up for some serious musical fun. With singing being paramount, this class is for children as young as six months to Year 2. The Mini Minstrels provides music education for a life-long love of music and is a springboard for future instrumental or choral studies.

We went to Kentucky this month and what a hive of activity it is! Kentucky offers B&Bs, Go Create! and open gardens in the spring. FOCUS caught up with Kate Hedges about the open gardens, which is a fundraising effort to fix the Memorial Hall.

With the new Mayor of the Armidale Regional Council elected, we met Simon Murray and found out his vision and aspirations for a sustainable region.

Prize is on again, and the New England Art Society has opened the fourth consecutive exhibition for 2017. This exhibition runs until 3rd November, so time is limited to go and experience this very special event. FOCUS caught up with Tess Cullen, who told us all about the Art Prize.

Undoubtably one of Australia’s most highly respected and prolific musical artists, Paul Kelly is taking his band on the road for a special regional tour, stopping off at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre.

FOCUS was lucky enough to pin him down for a chat …

H

i Paul. With a successful career spanning over 43 years, how has your writing style or topics changed over the years?

I don’t think it's changed that much. You never know what you’re doing when you’re writing a song - well, I don’t anyway. I sort of figure out what's happening somewhere in the middle of it. So for me, songwriting's always been a bit like fishing; you don’t know when you’re going to get a song, but you’ve gotta turn up if you wanna get a bite.

You’ve collaborated with a myriad of talented artists over the years. Who has been the most memorable?

There have been lots of good ones, and one I’ve done recently was with A.B Original doing a version of Dumb Things with them ... Way back to working with Kev Carmody writing From Little Things Big Things Grow around a campfire at the Wivenhoe Dam in 1998; writing Treaty, working with Yothu Yindi on his second record, going up to Arnhem Land and staying up there for a while getting to know other members of his band and spending time on their country. Lots of highlights.

Having written songs and collaborated with indigenous artists vocalising about Aboriginal Social Injustices, what is it that is so prevalent and makes you

so passionate about this issue within society?

When I left school and started travelling around, I started to realise I hadn’t learnt anything at school about Aboriginal history or culture, so I started digging around for myself and realised that there was a huge silence or gap in Australian culture about our history. I think it's still playing out today; it’s never been fully acknowledged that there was a war going on when Australia was settled by Europeans, and I think that's had its ramifications right through to today.

Let's talk about the new album. Not only has it topped the Aria Album charts, your shows are selling out fast. You haven’t really had much of a gap over the years in terms of album production; what do you think it is about Life is Fine that has been so well received?

I thought it might do OK, but it's done better than I expected. You never know which records are going to be popular and which aren’t. I wanted to make a playful, upbeat record with the whole band; I released two records last year that were more philosophical and meditative - a record of Shakespeare sonnets and a record of songs I’ve sung at funerals. So I think it was just coming out with a record that was in such contrast to those that people have responded to.

It really is a different record, where you’ve taken the back seat on a couple of

Christmas The countdown to Christmas begins with Armidale’s Christmas in the Mall on Thursday 23 November and the Guyra Christmas Party on Saturday 2 December.

HESTER FRASER Goldheist aka Hester Fraser believes her mission is to bring people together through the power of music. Her songs share topics that invite communication - whether it’s about the struggles faced by people living on the land, mental health issues or the plight of immigrants.

Goldheist brings her unique and beautiful blend of folk, pop and classical to the Armidale Golf Club this month … i Hester. By the time this interview goes to print, you would have just launched your new album, REALM, at the Sydney Opera House. Leading into this moment - how does it feel to be a woman with rural roots, about to perform at such an iconic metropolitan venue?

The Sydney Opera House has always felt like home to me. I performed there on a couple of occasions with Gondwana Voices when I was young, and the warm glow of that experience has never left me. There is a familiarity to the beautiful, iconic concrete walls, and the whole building resonates with a creative spirit - something I felt even as a young girl from the country visiting the big smoke. The opportunity to showcase my own music in these hallowed halls has been an absolute honour.

What's a bit of the background/process behind writing the songs on REALM ... was it a long-term project?

These songs have been written and recorded over the last few years, and reflect some of the stories and experiences I've collected in the course of my adventures during that time.

I spend a lot of time on the road; a couple of the tracks from REALM were actually written in my head whilst driving long trips! Once I had chosen the songs for the album, I took them to my producer and we worked on them together, developing the arrangements and recording all the elements.

From your education years at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to present day ... what are a few words you'd use to describe your musical journey?

My musical journey has been a marvellous fusion of my classical music education, my country heritage, and my interest in humanitarian issues, social commentary and conservation. The songs on REALM are a real demonstration of the way these elements have come together over the years, as I’ve developed my own style and musical direction.

We'll be looking forward to seeing you perform in Port Macquarie and Armidale over coming months. How much are you looking forward to being on the road touring your album?

I’m thrilled to be bringing my album to magnificent concert spaces around the country.

My music has taken me to many marvellous and unprecedented locations, and I never tire of meeting new people and performing in new venues, as much as I also love returning to my New England heartland. These are the experiences that fuel the fire!

"The wheels on the bus go round and round" is a hit song with preschoolers ... and rather a commentary on the way life rolls on.

T

he Armidale Regional Council has a new driver in Mayor Simon Murray, with his Deputy Dorothy Robinson. It will be interesting and important as they show us the route they choose to take us on and how efficiently we will get to our destination. Hopes are with this new team of Councillors - they have some great assets to work with in a complex time of tremendous challenge world-wide. We look forward to hearing their plans, hoping they’re realistic, forward-looking and imaginative and bring us all along with them. What an opportunity they have - building on freshened protocols - and challenged to take us forward to the next level. Public service bears great responsibility. Some who didn't make it through the amazingly complex electoral process can still contribute to the community, perhaps on appropriate committees?

I do hope that sensible, do-able plans for the central retail areas proceed as a priority for the new Council. If we don't show confidence in ourselves, how will we convince others? The Armidale Mall and its changed realities and functions affects the morale of the whole region.

Healthy communities need hearts and new ideas need support. Thinking about responsibility (and changing the subject) how do you feel about the space race? Children grow up now with the idea of people whizzing around the galaxy, and many adults are entranced as well. Just throwing a tentative idea out - I ponder when I hear casual comments that when Earth is uninhabitable we’ll migrate to another planet (most of them looking remarkably unattractive). Why this casual acceptance that we're going to ruin this wonderful, nurturing planet we're already on?

We live closer to nature than those in highrise city buildings, so we can surely see there are sensible choices to be made to avert such catastrophic consequences? Short termism on a few fronts isn't a solution, and many fragments go to making up the overall jigsaw. Did you know that more than a million Australian birds are killed every day by cats? The web of life is complex and

fragile.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ... I'm so pleased the Conservatorium is featuring jazz as part of its programming under NECOM'S new director, Russell Bauer. He has lots of ideas, plus collaborating with others in common projects, opening new doors. The schools here play an enormous part in the life of the region. TAS has commissioned an orchestral and choral composition, Soldier On, from Paul Jarman (premiered October 13/14), celebrating "compassion, service, friendship and unity".

Steve McMillan has sent me estimated revenue from 2017’s sporting events to the end of September - $13,235,991. Not a bad economic contribution! (Guyra’s figures proving hard to get). In so many fields volunteers gain joy, unpaid but rewarded in a way that money couldn’t replace. Icing on the cake! With new migrants coming here soon adding a needed boost to our population, the gift of a greeting and a smile goes further than you can imagine.

The university, of course, is one of our most important resources and interaction maximises opportunities. Think laterally of new possibilities open to us and our businesses by accessing the community’s specialist knowledge up on the hill.

When talking racing with Rod Watt, Armidale Jockey Club President, he commented that the first recorded race meeting here was in 1841 apparently "celebrated with Champagne and Sherry". The indefatigable Carol Higginbottom and her CanAssist team are having their Melbourne Cup and Fashion Parade with all the usual bells and whistles at the Armidale Racecourse on November 7; tickets at Concepts (becoming our mini department store).

Tourism, of course, is something we need to know how to really use and offer. Take the initiative and benefit! I know I'm an unashamed romantic, but I always do like to see and share that sprinkle of stardust. And three cheers for some rain, underlining spring !

On Saturday 14 October, the New England Art Society (NEAS) opened the fourth consecutive Daphne Young Watercolour Art Prize exhibition. The exhibition in the Armidale Art Gallery in the Beardy Street Mall is on view until Friday 3 November. We spoke to Society President Tess Cullen.

It was a great success; we had a full house. Our visitors were welcomed with complimentary rich tomato soup, crusty bread and wine.

Everyone was clearly impressed by the quality and diversity of the art works.

Each year it seems to get better and better.

What makes the Daphne Young Art Prize special?

The Art Prize is one of only a few competitions solely for classic watercolour works, and once again it brought together impressive art works from across the New England region and beyond. Many painting techniques use water, but this competition is for the classic watercolour medium, which is unique in its transparency. This brings colour and luminosity difficult to achieve with other mediums. Importantly, the exhibition celebrates the creativity of the contributing artists, as well as the memory of Daphne Young.

Can you tell me more about Daphne Young?

Yes, the competition is named in honour of the late Daphne Young. Back in the ‘90s, Daphne was an established artist who exhibited widely in Brisbane and Sydney, before coming to our region and establishing a studio in Invergowrie with her partner, Wes. As an artist, Daphne collaborated and worked with many well-known Australian artists, including John Olsen. As a member of the Society, she is remembered for her passion for watercolour and the

ell us about yourself Patsy..

I’m an Armidale resident and I’ve lived here for about 20 years. I make films about local events and community groups.

I was also a counselor, however I stopped doing that about 5 years ago.

So now you get to pursue your passions?

Yeah, I found that film was taking over. I had been a filmmaker, I was in the Anthropology department at ANU for many years. I made films about Indonesia at the time.

With so many genres, where do you sit in the art world?

I don’t! (Laughs) I take photographs. In this exhibition the images are all trees or rocks.

Mostly I’m interested in the colour and the patterns. Rather than saying this is a rock, it’s about the shape and textures.

Do you find these images throughout the New England?

Everything from this show is mostly from the area. All the trees are from the New England.

When I arrived, it was very exciting and very beautiful. So the images were very organically found from roaming the land.

So would you say there is an underlying environmental aspect of this show?

I think it’s Alex and I just looking. When we see something that takes our eye, we shape it into something. We are constantly looking around to find what interests us and using our imagination. Alex in particular is open to imagination and doesn’t believe in using a lot of new expensive products.

Local grandparents, seniors and families are encouraged to connect across the generations this NSW Grandparents Day.

SW Grandparents Day celebrates the contributions grandparents and older people make to their families and communities.

It’s a day to celebrate all the great things our grandparents and seniors have done, and continue to do.

Held on the last Sunday in October, this year NSW Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday 29 October at the Armidale Markets in the Mall in Armidale and a special mid-week event at the Guyra Library on Wednesday 1 November.

Armidale Regional Council CEO Peter Dennis said, “We want to celebrate the

It’s a day to celebrate all the great things our grandparents and seniors have done, and continue to do.

“It is wonderful to have the opportunity to host some fun, interactive events that bring young people together with older people in our community. The events provide a great reason for people to connect, share skills, thoughts and ideas!”

At the Markets in the Mall event in Armidale, activities will include crafts, scrapbooking, knitting, garden pot decorating, a reading corner and dance.

Looking through

Windows

The lived stories, experiences and memories of Aboriginal people across the New England and Northwest NSW regions will feature in a new exhibition opening at NERAM in November.

L

ooking through Windows is a project by artist, filmmaker and academic Dr Lorina Barker from the University of New England, who has used a combination of old artforms and new technologies to document stories of removal, dispossession and “protection” by the Aborigines Protection and Welfare Boards as well as other government agencies across our region in recent history.

“This project has highlighted the urgent need to document the Aboriginal experience and to demonstrate the tenacity and strength of our Elders to record and preserve the languages and histories that connect us to our peoples, our identities, our cultures and our Countries,” she said. “This project has the potential to reframe the histories of the New England and Northwest NSW

regions by the inclusion of contemporary and living histories.”

Combining artwork, oral histories, language, film and photography, the exhibition aims to capture what it was like to live “under the Act” on missions, reserves and on the fringes of society and the shared experience of removal to places like the Cootamundra Girls Home or the Kinchela Boys Home. New technologies like virtual reality, drone footage and multimedia has been explored and used as tools to show how language, culture and histories can be passed on to new generations.

Over the past year the project has brought together groups of elders from Brewarrina, Armidale and Bourke to make artworks and discuss their experiences and stories of the “old days” with a talented group of local artists, filmmakers,

musicians and an oral historian, including Brendan Blacklock, Laszlo Szabo, Lyndsay Urquhart, Beth Macraild-O’Louglin, Simon Mellor, Kim Scales, Matt Pilkington, Cherene Spendlove and Kimberley Barker. It will also feature the works of community based artists Aunty Jenny Shillingsworth, Aunty Rita Wright, Aunty Verna Barker, Uncle Brian Irving, Brian Smith and Derek Moran.

Looking through Windows will be on display at the New England Regional Art Museum from Friday 10 November until Sunday 10 December 2017. The exhibition has been supported by NERAM, the Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place, University of New England, Armajun Aboriginal Health Service and JNC Group, as well as a number of community organisations and groups across the two regions.

Method Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Season salmon fillets with salt, pepper and cayenne pepper and bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Once cooked, flake the salmon and set aside in a bowl. Reduce the oven to 170 degrees and when ready, place the taco shells on a baking tray to heat for one minute. For the topping, mix chopped

H

i Tim. How did you and Oscar come together musically to create Holy Holy?

After high school, both Oscar and I (we didn’t know each other then) decided to do this work experience thing in Thailand, so we met each other over there. We both had our guitars ... I remember sitting around drinking Thai rum and playing music.

We built a strong friendship there and we both had our own musical careers independently. Oscar was in a pretty successful rock band called the Dukes of Windsor, and I had a singer songwriter career based out of Brisbane where I released a couple of records. Ten or 12 years later, we met up in Europe and wrote and recorded a few songs together and liked the direction of that, so decided to form the project Holy Holy based on those recordings.

With such a busy year last year, how did you guys find the time to write and record the album?

It was a really different experience to the first record. The first record was a much more organic, gradual and slower process; Oscar and I had written a bunch of tracks while we were overseas and when we came back to Australia, I think it took us over two years to make that record. I think when you’re making your first record, you have that luxury, because there are no deadlines or labels or anyone else working with you - so you can just keep on going until it’s done.

The second was really different, and by that time so much had happened for us as a band - we had a great label, a great agent, a great manager and a momentum. So, we embraced that change and started to work a lot more to deadlines; we actually did this thing where we booked three sessions in the studio over a period of about eight months. Each session was around five days, so before each

session we would work on having - was in Berlin at that time, and I haven’t been to FOTSUN before, three or four songs prepared. We were I remember going to different but I’m excited to get there. Around about 2009, I had my first exhibition at the Armidale Aboriginal Keeping Place. In 2009, I moved here with my wife, Mel. At the time we felt like a change, and Armidale seemed to be the right place. We have some plans to move to the coast in the near future.

Do you think that moving to the coast will have a change on your artwork, from an inland to a coastal perspective?

Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day. I have a really big connection with the ocean. Growing up, I’ve always been a country boy, but there’s something about the ocean, the land and environment, place and people. I’ve noticed it creeping into my art. I’ve been using a lot more blues and greens, seascapes and waves lately.

So what’s the best way to see some of your works?

I currently have some works at Oorala at UNE, I’ll be having an exhibition at the Keeping Place in November and then there’s more planned for 2018!

Kentucky Gardens Kentucky Open Gardens, 18th and 19th November, is a fundraising event for the iconic Kentucky Memorial Hall. Kate Hedges tells FOCUS readers what to expect from this amazing community.

ell us what we can expect on this garden tour?

Gorgeous relaxing gardens in the pristine New England air! Our gardens are within easy driving distance, and we encourage visitors to take their time, pick up lunch from the Kentucky Memorial Hall or morning/afternoon tea from Kentucky Public School and enjoy them in one of the gardens if they so choose.

Tell us a little about each garden.

A 10 - 15 minute drive south of Uralla on Thunderbolts Way is Salisbury Court garden. This historical property is home to a beautiful garden carefully nutured by current custodians Trish and Peter Rasmussen. It includes everything one of Australia’s venerable properties should have - a tree lined driveway and homestead that is one of the few remaining of its kind in the country, surrounded by a beautiful rolling garden.

Fifteen - 20 minutes drive away is Janet and Angus Carter’s Calliope garden, boasting beautiful views and a wonderfully shady elm tree perfectly set off by a stunning rose hedge. A garden simple in its execution, but a great lesson in taste and restraint and a wonderful place to spread out a picnic blanket and enjoy refreshments.

Down the hill is David and Kate Hedges’ Kentucky Roses. This garden brims with David Austin blooms, and secret paths through towering roses are designed to be “interactive”, so visitors can enjoy the wonderful scents of the flowers as they wander. There are pretty tables and chairs in the shade to enjoy morning or afternoon

This peaceful environment has been the perfect place to relax with family and friends for the Roberts family over the years, and now visitors can enjoy it too!

A 10 minute drive over to Phil and Carey Roberts “Danfield” completes the tour of the private gardens. The Danfield garden is packed with trees, roses, bulbs, shrubs and water features. This peaceful environment has been the perfect place to relax with family and friends for the Roberts family over the years, and now visitors can enjoy it too!

The Kentucky Public School is home to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden, established when the school obtained a $50,000 grant from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Grant Scheme in 2012.

A picket fence and fountain set of a charming garden packed with produce the children cultivate, pick and cook every week, while free range chickens keep the pests at bay and provide eggs for the school kitchen.

The school was three times runners up in the prestigious Australian Country Styles’ school harvest table competition, so don’t miss this unique opportunity to see how a small country school is teaching children about organic gardening and healthy food preparation.

How important is the Kentucky Memorial Hall in the community?

The hall has always been the centre of life in Kentucky.

It is widely used and very importantly houses a collection of photographs of many of our area’s ex-servicemen and women from Kentucky, as well as 40 historical photographs of the early years of Kentucky, all of which

are very popular with both tourists and relations of former Kentucky residents - they’re a wonderful link to our past and are being safely preserved in the hall. The photographs of the service men and women are incredibly precious,

and we are very pleased we have secured them for future generations to appreciate.

So this is a real community effort?

We love life here in Kentucky, and we’re capitalising on the abundance of residents willing to pitch in and help. Kentucky has a rich history as a soldier settlers’ area, with returned servicemen taking up blocks of land to establish orchards. This formed a thriving community which still exists today.

Older generations who have maintained the hall for over 50 years are encouraging younger residents to become involved - we can no longer rely on government help for these buildings, or they will fall into dereliction.

Many residents are manning the gates at gardens, and the entire Kentucky Public School is involved with providing morning and afternoon teas over the weekend, so yes, it is a real community effort - and we’re excited to show off our area on the 18th and 18th November!

2018 is shaping up to be another exciting year filled with creativity and exceptional tutors for Go Create! New England.

We have booked in some international tutors next year, along with our very talented tutors from Australia, including New England, and we can’t wait to have them all at the studio!

In January, we are hosting Icelandic felting artist Anna Gunnarsdottir. Anna will teach us how to create a 3D felted shape that can be turned into a lamp. It will be an excellent workshop that results in a beautiful and functional art piece!

Cas Holmes is an English mixed media artist who has a keen interest in the beautiful world in which we live. Take the fear out of creating a sketchbook or journal with Cas by exploring creative ways of developing ideas through mixed media.

The Life Pharmacy group is a small group of independently owned pharmacies dedicated to providing the best pharmacy healthcare in the communities they serve. When the opportunity arose to purchase the pharmacy in Armidale, we knew instantly it was going to be a fantastic addition to the group.

There are three Life Pharmacies in Canberra.

In NSW, there are Life Pharmacies in Forbes, Parkes, Dubbo, Orange and Bathurst, so we are very excited to have a new sibling in Armidale!

The Life focus is on being a traditional community pharmacy that offers quality service and patient care, and then making sure we do it as professionally as possible. Sole Innovative Cultural Camp for Aboriginal Youth a Success Thirty-three Aboriginal kids from the Northern, Western, Hunter New England and Sydney Districts of New South Wales immersed themselves in traditional art and customs at the inaugural Pathfinders Cultural Camp.

The kids ranged from eight years to 16 years old and came from a mix of foster care and residential care backgrounds. Five sets of siblings and four families reunited and came together to enjoy fun and quiet activities at The Willows in Glen Innes - Indigenous protected land - with each other, Pathfinders’ staff and community Elders.

Conversations during the “Who’s your mob?” activity and during country, language and totem discussions resulted in some of the children realising they had relatives at the camp they hadn’t met before. The children built on these

connections through participating in many group and traditional gender-specific activities. Everyone participated in the opening smoking ceremony, where they painted with ochre. They also listened to stories from Elders, participated in the bush walk and site appreciation, examined Aboriginal artefacts, saw how to make coolamons and more. In addition to culturally based activities, the children also participated in swimming, kayaking, football and telling stories around the camp fire.

Pathfinders’ goal with the cultural camp was to address the loss of transmission of cultural knowledge from generation to generation for Aboriginal children and young people in Outof-Home Care. Needless to say, the Pathfinders Cultural Camp was a success and paved the way for future Pathfinders culture camps to reach more children around New South Wales and beyond.

A NEGS STUDENT RECEIVES THE MARIE BASHIR PEACE AWARD

NEGS is thrilled to announce that Year 12 student, Emily Sole, was recently selected to receive one of eight Marie Bashir Peace Awards from the National Council of Women (NCW) of NSW presented by her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, on September 25th at Parliament House in Sydney.

T

he young student, who is currently sitting her Higher School Certificate, was selected from 85 nominees across the state for her strong sense of resilience and compassion. These awards honour the example set by long time member of the National Council of Women of NSW, Dame Marie Bashir, during her tenure as Governor of NSW. Noting her impressive school career to date, NEGS Principal Mrs Mary Anne Evans said it came as no surprise that the outstanding Year 12 student was one of the eight young women chosen. “It is entirely fitting that Emily has been recognised for her significant efforts towards harmony and social justice thanks to her strong leadership skills and contribution to NEGS and beyond, ” said Mrs Evans.

Whilst commending Emily, Mrs Evans also applauded the NEGS teaching faculty for their continued commitment to facilitating the school’s nationally recognised Wellbeing Program. “This amazing program has equipped both Emily and her fellow students with an awareness of global injustice and also provided the girls with many incredible leadership opportunities.” Mrs Evans also confirmed the recent news that Emily has received early acceptance into the Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) at Macquarie University through the Global Leadership program.

In 2016 Emily was selected to perform at the prestigious “Focus on Ability Short Film Festival” in Sydney after entering her film, which portrayed the abilities of those living with a disability.

Emily’s work was inspired by Nova Employment’s goal to raise awareness of the need to end discrimination of people living with a disability, with an emphasis on the need to stop focusing on the “dis” part of disability, and instead address the abilities of this particular segment of our community. Her efforts so impressed the judges, that she was chosen from a

field of over 160 entries to perform in Sydney.

In response to the award, Emily says, “I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to the National Council of Women of New South Wales and Dame Marie Bashir for this amazing award. I would also like to thank Mrs Mary Anne Evans and NEGS for allowing me the freedom and space to pursue my dream of social justice for the local, national and global community.

“I believe the greatest peace and harmony in this world is achieved through serving others, and I have been fortunate that I have been given so many substantial opportunities to be able to serve in my school community. Just some of these examples include, during my role as Chapel Prefect, being encouraged to implement weekly lunchtime pastoral care sessions that dealt with issues around Hope. I also accepted the role of coaching our NEGS 7 netball team and took the lead in the NEGS ‘Student Wellbeing Action Team’, that recognised and embraced Harmony Day and White Ribbon Day. “Within the wider Armidale community, I have participated in the annual Campus to City Canter to raise funds for SES, took part in the Relay for Life, and have spent time volunteering at the Ken Thompson Lodge and Autumn Lodge aged care facilities. I have also been able to serve others both interstate and internationally through service trips to Yipirinya school in Alice Springs, St Christopher’s Orphanage in Fiji, and Agape Orphanage for children with HIV and McKean Leprosy Centre in Chang Mai, Thailand.”

In conclusion, Emily says, “To serve others has always been a major endeavour in my life, and it has been incredibly humbling to receive an award that acknowledges my goal to help others. I am truly excited about my future leadership service opportunities and can’t wait to embark on the next chapter of my leadership career”.

Gubi is a not-for-profit Mobile Play Session Service that provides quality Early Childhood Education, which is responsive to the needs of the rural and socially isolated communities in the New England area it serves. Gubi has established a trusted and successful model of innovative child care, early education and development over 38 years. We believe that educationally based play sessions provide a vital role in the early childhood development of children and their families in rural, remote and isolated areas. Our play sessions cover cognitive, fine and gross motor development and focus on developing sensory and social skills of children, and they strongly encourage the participation of parents. The increase in demand for Gubi Gabun’s unique educational service in New England is testament to our successful efforts in educating and supporting children and their parents. What do your play sessions provide to children and their families? We use an emergent curriculum format as we program and plan experiences for children - and base our programs on the National Quality Framework and the National Quality Standards.

At playgroup, the children and, importantly, the parents become involved in creative arts, dance, play (which develops both fine and gross motor skills), and storytelling sessions. Gubi also provides a toy borrowing service, and there is a regular newsletter and information imparted via social media, resources and referral available for the parents and the community. Our playgroups provide our families an environment where they can bond with their children through play and also a much needed outing to socialise and exchange ideas with other parents.

Gubi takes an anti-bias approach embracing the child, their family and community and is committed to access and equity regardless of the circumstances, ability or background of each child. The priority for our educational programs is on supporting individual children and on identifying their specific needs and the needs of their families.

Gubi also works with the regional early intervention and community nurses to provide support in the areas of child development, nutrition and health checks. Gubi are able to refer families to services that support specific identified needs which is critical for socially and geographically isolated families that may not be aware of the need for additional support or reluctant to seek advice.

Where and when do you hold your play sessions?

Our team of qualified early childhood educators provide educational play sessions at 16 venues on a fortnightly basis across the New England at the following locations: Bald Blair, Ebor, Ben Lomond, Wongwibinda, Kentucky, Uralla, Bundarra, Wollomombi, Tingha, Hernani,

Guyra, Goorialla (at Guyra), Walcha, Bendemeer and Black Mountain. Gubi’s accessible and structured early childhood sessions provide experiences for 350 children from birth to school-age, from 199 families at community venues throughout the townships and villages of the New England region. In addition, Gubi offers a Toy and Parent Resource Library and provides support to other community programs, such as the Armajun Aboriginal Health Service, through the provision of equipment and resources for educational programs.

Music

Early Childhood Facilitator Peta Bale tells FOCUS readers about NECOM’s Early Childhood Music Program, known as Mini Minstrels. This is an exciting and fun-filled introduction to music for children as young as two months.

M

ini Minstrels provides an outstanding music education that gives children a life-long love of music and is the ideal springboard for their future instrumental or choral studies.

What is Mini Minstrels? It sounds cute, but isn’t it just having fun making noise?

I like to call our very special foundation music program (Mini Minstrels) “serious musical fun”.

It looks like a lot of fun, with all the games and songs we do, but beneath this lies a carefully prepared, sequential music development program, based on studies by the famed music educator Kodaly. It can set a person up for a life of enjoyment and confidence in music participation.

So, what else do you do in a Mini Minstrels music class?

We start most of our classes with sitting and bouncing on balls. This is such a great way to engage everyone right from the start (there’s never a dull moment). The parent or caregiver helps the child bounce to the beat of our welcome songs. By the time the children are three or four years old, they can mostly bounce to the beat all by themselves (recognising and responding to the beat is a school outcome).

Once you can recognise the beat, there is so much you can participate in. So, a lot of our class is spent reinforcing a sense of beat … Whether it’s saying rhymes together, playing a variety of 42 New England focus.

Is that all?

We also do a folk dance together. This is a wonderful way to encourage community, enjoyment and to gain a sense of musical phrasing.

Not everyone has had the opportunity to listen to classical music, either. So we always have a short segment of moving (often with scarves or ribbons) to a piece of recorded music.

Why is music so important?

Music is one of the few activities that engages both sides of the brain at the same time. When you think about it, there’s the creative aspect as well as the logical sphere, all working together when you participate in music. Research is showing that this increases the connectivity of the synapses in your brain. Music actually helps you become smarter! But that’s not all - sharing music together with parent and child creates a lasting bond, along with a cultural sharing that is so important.

Does each child have to have an adult with them?

In our NECOM classes this is usually the case.

Our classes are limited to 10 children and their caregivers. Of course, the classes also help the adults gain confidence in singing, playing and moving with their children. I am sure that some aspects of our classes are enjoyed at home during the week.

Whatever would you do with babies?

I love this class, as it especially gives new mums the confidence to bring music into their child’s day. We still do bouncing and rolling on balls, rhymes, songs, instruments, dancing and listening, but there are fun little rhymes and songs to do while changing nappies, tickling, rocking and playing peek-a-boo. Most of our classes also have a featured lullaby, where the older children rock a teddy to sleep.

What if my child won’t cooperate?

lessons. Our rates are very reasonable, too. There are no extra costs or joining fees…. just the flat rate or an early bird rate if you’re able. We really do try to make it as accessible as possible, as it’s such a great resource in our community.

Does this whole program work?

Many of our children finish our program and go on to Mini Singers (a choir for K-2 school aged children) or take up learning an instrument.

But even if they don’t, the confidence, the ability to work together in a group and the mastery of the basics of music will be a life-long companion, ready to be used whenever needed.

Do you love working with children? The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is the nationally regulated entry-level qualification for working in early childhood education and care. The qualification will put you on the path to a career working as an early childhood educator in a centre-based service or family day care, designing and implementing the curriculum that will shape young minds. You will learn how to use a national learning framework, regulations and quality standards to support the education and care of children from birth to school age. You will be able to facilitate play and ensure children's health and safety while supporting their learning and wellbeing. Information correct at time of publishing, December 2015.

How will it help my career?

The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is the minimum qualification you’ll need to have to work in early childhood centres, including preschools. Half of the educators at an early childhood service need to have a diploma level qualification or above (or be actively working towards) in order for the service to meet regulations. Possible job roles include: • centre manager (children's services) • children's advisor • children's services coordinator • child development educator • director/manager • early childhood educator • family day care co-ordinator • group/team coordinator/leader early childhood • program leader (children's services) • special needs/inclusive educator What are the entry requirements for this course?

Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) must have a current Working with Children Check

(students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of Children's Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. You can find more information at Working with Children check. You’ll also need to have the First Aid Certificate (HLTAID004).

Because this unit cannot be completed online, it’s not included as part of this course. However, you must complete this First Aid Certificate before you can receive the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. In order to complete the First Aid Certificate, you’ll need to perform basic life support skills, such as control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing these kinds of basic life support skills, you won’t be able to achieve the unit.

Can I continue my studies after this course?

When you successfully complete this course you can apply for the TAFE NSW Higher Education course Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care (Birth - 5).

Can I apply for a government subsidised place?

Yes. This means you may be eligible for a government subsidised fee, concession or exemption. Select “Enrol now” to go to the TAFE NSW course fee calculator. Answer the questions, and you’ll be given an estimated course fee. Can I apply for VET FEE-HELP? Yes. This means you can apply for a VET FEE-HELP student loan to help pay for your course. The Commonwealth Government VET FEE-HELP student loan scheme provides you with the option of: • deferring all of your course fees or • paying some of your course fees upfront and deferring the balance.

It is vitally important for kids to get a good start in life and their oral health is no exception. Research now shows us that a child’s lifetime risk of gum disease and dental decay can be traced all the way back to our grandparents. This means that a mother’s oral health at the time her baby is born can affect the oral health of the baby’s own child decades later! The father is not immune either. So, we all need to take care of our teeth and gums, not just for our own sake but for the sake of our children and their children. Studies have shown that mouth bacteria can be transferred to the baby even in utero. However, when the kids do come along there are a few important things to remember. Both parents should have a professional clean as close to the birth as

practical and a few months later to facilitate a healthy oral environment. You should start getting your baby used to having their‘ mouth cleaned from day one. After every feed, immediately wipe the inside of their mouths and across their gums to desensitise them.

You may not want to do this if they have just fallen asleep, but you should try and do it most of the time. This will help keep their mouths clean with a predominance of good bacteria, and make it much easier when it comes time to brush a cranky toddler’s teeth without losing your fingers. We will be visiting the child care centres in Armidale, Uralla, and Walcha to go over tooth brushing and some helpful hints for parents over the coming months. Hopefully we see you soon!

TG’s is a partnership between Gayle and husband Trevor that started in Wauchope almost 20 years ago. Gayle is an early childhood teacher with 34 years’ industry experience in both community and private childcare, while Trevor is a landscape designer, designing interactive, natural outdoor playscapes.

What inspired you to start TG’s Child Care and Preschool?

The original vision comes from Trevor, who saw the potential of our two backgrounds and areas of expertise and the opportunity to bring them together to create a unique offering in the childcare industry; that is, learning through play in natural spaces.

What brought you to the New England?

Ten years ago, we were looking for opportunities in a smaller township that didn’t already have a long daycare centre. We met Alex Pawlow, Uralla Shire Council’s Economic Development Officer. He was incredibly supportive and focused on creating solutions to any roadblocks we came across.

ow long have you lived in Armidale, and what do you love most about the area?

Greg was born in Armidale and I was born in Bundarra; both of us grew up here. I lived in Moree for ten years and returned to Armidale in the early eighties.

We both love Armidale, especially this time of year. The four distinct seasons are really beautiful; although it does get a bit cold, that's all part of it, isn't it ? But there is nothing nicer than a warm autumn afternoon or a spring morning after a shower of rain. There is always something happening in town; you can be as involved in the community as you want. We love it when we get business people visit us

from Sydney or Brisbane; we like to take them for dinner, so they can appreciate our thriving food culture, or show them around the area to see just how breathtaking our "backyard" is. They all leave suitably impressed - and who wouldn't be?

How has the company grown and evolved over the past 20 years?

We joined the Rapid Group Co-operative in 2002 to help us increase our buying power.

Both Greg and I were absolutely focused on the group’s alibility to support regional businesses and provide a non threatening environment where we could draw on knowledge of other members. In 2004, the Rapid Group adopted the branding and corporate livery you see

today. We were the second store nationally who changed over to the new look; it fitted our desire to rename the business to something that better described our range of products, as well as supporting our movement towards environmentally responsible cleaning solutions.

Greg joined the Rapid Board in 2003 and was voted in as Chairman in 2010; this allowed him to be at the forefront of the group’s success. What that meant for us here in Armidale was the insight he gained and the close contacts he developed with Senior Industry Executives both in Australia andiInternationally. This has kept us up to speed with changing trends and new innovations that were being offered. We were

asked on many occasions to look at new products and have local cleaning contractors use and evaluate new cleaning concepts. We were able to deliver the most up to date and innovative products as they became available; we are both keen to continue to provide our customers with the latest innovations available in this rapidly evolving industry.

We have been doing that area for all of our 20 years and visit those major centres at least once a month with our sales and delivery team members. We launched our online ordering website earlier this year, so that has seen us send things as far as Adelaide.

What is the best and worst part about being in this industry?

The best part is the personal relationships we have made. Many of our suppliers have visited us here in Armidale; they have been a part of our lives for a long time. We have a great deal of respect for our suppliers and customers - most of whom have been a part of our business from our very early days. Even members of the Rapidclean family who have retired and sold their business are still in contact, and we catch up with them as often as we can. We are very lucky that the people we do business with are very genuine, honest people, and it has been a great pleasure seeing our associates become our friends.

The worst part is the disrespect people outside of our industry show to those inside. I get very

disheartened when I hear someone speak about cleaners as though they are somehow second rate. I have seen good, hard working people being taken advantage of, simply because they are unappreciated. There are many people out there who think that if you are a cleaner, then you are not a professional. No one ever worries about paying $60 an hour for a tradie, but expect cleaners to work for $20. When you think about the responsibilities placed on cleaners for a safe and hygienic environment and then recognise the importance we place on those things, it really makes no sense at all.

What is the most rewarding thing about being part of such a successful, respected and long serving business?

I would have to say the most rewarding part

of our business journey is sharing it with Greg; we both are very appreciative of each other’s strengths and weaknesses and support each other daily. Of course, it hasn't always been smooth sailing, but there isn't a day that goes by that we don't look at each other with respect and admiration. It is also very satisfying that together we have built a reputation of being leaders in our industry. We often hear very positive feedback from our customers about how we have helped them with a difficult problem, or how positively our team have given them service. We are both very proud of our team; they are professional and treat all our customers with friendly attention and sound product knowledge.

Plans for the future?

Well, had you asked us that at the beginning of the year, the answer would have been very

different. In March, Greg and I started working with a Business Coach; she has catapulted us into the next phase of our business careers.

With her help and encouragement, we have expanded our warehouse, increased our team and purchased new delivery vans. You might have seen the team delivering goods recently in the vans; they are pretty hard to miss. We have embraced the new market areas and have plans to extend the showroom in Miller Street in the very near future. Our turnover continues to grow; so does our penetration into new markets and areas previously under serviced. The future is very exciting and with the help of our new team members, Darren, Greg and I will continue to work hard, keep our knowledge up to date and offer customers advice and support well in to the next 20 years ... Maybe 10!

ate-payment, non-payment and underpayment of wages and superannuation can form the basis of a distressing dispute between an employee and employer. If you think your employer is not paying you correctly or if you are being paid late or not at all, there are a number of steps you should take.

What should I do if my employer is not paying me?

• Calculate the amounts you believe you should be paid or are entitled to. You will need to familiarise yourself with your contract of employment or enterprise agreement and the relevant industry award. You should also make sure you are eligible for the Superannuation Guarantee which is currently at the rate of 9.5 percent. Normally, if you earn more than $450.00 per month before tax your employer is required to make statutory super contributions.

It doesn’t matter whether you are employed on a casual, part-time or full-time basis.

• You need to work out exactly how much you are owed. Your superfund should be able to provide you with a statement confirming what contributions have been made. If you are unsure, you can lodge an enquiry with the ATO. With respect to under-payment, late-payment or non-payment of wages and entitlements, you need to work out the difference between the amounts you have received and the amounts you are entitled to. This can be confusing and time consuming, however a lawyer will be able to assist with the process and advise you as to your correct rates of pay and entitlements including accrued annual leave, penalty rates, overtime and loadings.

• Check that your annual leave and other leave accrual entitlements have been calculated correctly.

• Once you have calculated and tabled the amounts owing, raise the issue with your employer. More often than not, any concerns can be resolved quickly and amicably. If you cannot resolve the issue or are forced to resign due to late or non-payment of wages, you may need to take further action by commencing

proceedings.

Should I litigate? Knowing what, where and when to file can be an incredibly stressful and complicated ordeal, especially for someone who is unfamiliar with the mechanics of legal process and the operation of Australian Law. Statutory limitation periods apply for all claims, with some as short as 21 days. Most employees are covered by a federal Award which means their matter can be dealt with in the Fair Work Commission. If you are employed by the state public sector or local government, it is likely that the NSW Industrial Relations Commission will be the appropriate jurisdiction.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to commence proceedings in the Federal or State Courts. Your solicitor will be able to advise you of the appropriate jurisdiction and properly formulate your claim. This can include calculating any interest or compensation you may be entitled to.

When should I seek legal advice? If you are unable to resolve your matter directly with your employer, you should contact your union or solicitor as soon as possible if you think you are not being paid what you should be. By meeting with your solicitor early to discuss your options, you will give yourself the best chance to recover any amounts that your employer may owe you.

How should I prepare to meet with my solicitor? To assist your solicitor in preparing and presenting your case, you should gather all relevant documents including any contract of employment, all payslips, superfund statements and all relevant correspondence between you and your employer. In some cases, it may be beneficial to prepare a timeline/chronology of key events and a statement containing quotes as to what was said during important conversations. Planning ahead can reduce the time involved for drafting your claim, save legal costs and increase the likelihood of a quick and efficient resolution of your matter.
