ell us about yourself, Simone …

My husband, Rob, and I moved to Armidale 14 years ago, when I was pregnant with the first of our three children. Before we had kids, I was a graphic designer, working as a magazine design and layout artist. We came here so we could have a lifestyle where I could stay at home with our kids and eventually freelance from home, so we could always be available for our children.

Working from home with the kids underfoot sounds tricky. How do you manage your work/life balance?

Like most parents with three school age children, I don’t really stop much. I try very hard to work only during school hours, but my time working can be very stop/start, and I can end up in my studio late at night just to get a good run at something. I’m pretty organised though, and I’m actually someone who thrives on routine, structure and deadlines, so it suits me to be a parent freelancer!

Tell us about your art in all its forms.

The main art forms I’m interested in at the moment are illustrating for the picture book format and fine art prints for the home.

While the kids were little, I created copious amounts of craft with them, went crazy on their birthday invitations and decorations and made lots of things for kids to buy at their school fetes. I started to really love making and designing things specifically for children. When my youngest son was four, I was reading him

I’ve had interest from an agent and publishers in my own picture book story idea and recently attended a conference in Brisbane for aspiring author/illustrators, where the feedback was again really positive. So, hopefully something will come from that in the future. I have plans to approach magazines for editorial illustration work, and illustrating a range of designs for children’s homewares and clothing is definitely something I’d really love to do in the future.

Any final words?

Armidale has so many supportive environments for creative people. I would encourage anyone who has an idea or a dream to get out there and give it a go.

The New England Writers Centre is such a great community group who are completely generous in helping those who are learning and aspiring. NERAM is so supportive of the local printmaking community, and the Black Gully Printmakers have been such a wonderful group of kind, generous people willing to share their experience. Also, I just want to thank my husband and three kids for their unwavering support and generosity.

DANCE FOR CANCER

As this year’s stars practice for the upcoming event, FOCUS talks with Paul Hobson, the organiser of the 2017 Stars of Armidale, Dance for Cancer.

F

irstly, for those who don't know about the event, can you tell us all about it?

STARS OF ARMIDALE DANCE FOR CANCER is one of Cancer Council NSW’s flagship fundraising events, with local “stars” consisting of business owners and other notable members of the Armidale community dancing with some of the local and fabulously talented dance teachers.

All money raised from this event goes to support vital research projects, prevention programs, information, support and advocacy services. Cancer patients can be supported through local services, including transport, accommodation, financial, legal and counselling services, with proceeds also going towards the $15 million of research that Cancer Council funds each year to explore new treatments, earlier detection, better prevention programs. The accommodation facility known as Inala House, which is located near the North West Cancer Centre in Tamworth, provided over 300 free nights’ accommodation to patients from the Armidale region, in 2016/17, saving them over $20,000.

This year, Cancer Council NSW Stars of Armidale has a goal to fund a cancer patient transport service in Armidale, enabling local cancer patients free transport to travel to cancer appointments or treatment. Funds raised through Stars of Armidale 2017 will help support this project, to ensure this vital patient transport service is available for those in need in the Armidale community.

Is this a national event? How did it start?

Ticket price includes dinner and entertainment, with drinks available for purchase on the night from the club. Doors open at 6:30pm, with the dance extravaganza commencing at 7pm sharp.

As the event is an 18 and over event, there will be a chance for under 18s to attend the full dress rehearsal on the Friday night before the show to watch their favourite star perform for a gold coin donation.

There will be winners announced on the night in three separate categories, including “judges’ choice”, “people’s choice” and “Highest Fundraiser”. The judges adjudicating on the dance routines for the “judges’ choice” award include local member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall, and representatives from Armidale Can Assist and New England FOCUS. The people’s choice award will be decided by an SMS voting system on the night and cash donations to their favourite star, and the highest fundraiser award will be decided by the star who has raised the most money prior to the night.

Tell us about your love for your hometown?

My hometown of Tamworth means everything to me. It’s the beating heart of Country Music, and it’s the place where my family reside. It’s definitely where my heart lies; I lived in Sydney and Melbourne for 10 years and now that I’m home, I experience varying levels of separation anxiety every time I go on tour.

The Tamworth Country Music Festival must be your biggest event on the calendar ... What's your involvement with it?

It certainly is. It’s the most incredible time of the year. I’m the ambassador for the Tamworth Family Support Service, but I fly the TCMF flag wherever I go. My face is actually on the Tamworth Billboards at each entry point to town. I won’t ever get used to that ... It’s quite confronting!

When you aren't playing, what can we find Aleyce doing?

Managing a motel, managing an amazing artist, Tori Forsyth, teaching singing, distributing singles to radio for indie artists and hosting BalconyTV Tamworth. Looking after my gorgeous cat, ARIA, most importantly. I like to keep a busy schedule.

Is there anyone that you would like to acknowledge, who has ell the readers: who is Aleyce Simmonds, and what helped you along the way? does she do?

My family. Without them, I wouldn’t know where to start. My sisters, I’m a 30 year old singer/songwriter from the Country who inspire me every day.

Gugnin Andrey Gugnin was the winner of the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition. At just 30 years of age, he already has an impressive career. Growing up in Moscow, he won his first national competitions for piano at the age of 10 and his first international piano prize in Italy at the age of 22. He has released multiple albums and performed in concert halls all over the world.

he San Francisco Classical Voice has described his playing as “exemplifying pianism at its highest level, with staggering technical prowess and musical sensitivity”. Andrey is currently touring Australia, and on August 6th he will perform in Armidale at a concert presented by the New England Conservatorium.

You’re doing a very extensive regional tour at the moment; are you excited about seeing Australia?

First of all, it’s definitely my longest tour ever.

To tour in one country for so long and for so many concerts, it’s my first experience doing this.

It’s more than 30 concerts; that fact itself is very exciting. Secondly, it’s just great to be back in Australia. I really liked it from the first visit during the competition, and it’s just a great opportunity to learn about the country more. I’m not only visiting big cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, but plenty of smaller towns, so I can really research the life in Australia, and this is a great experience. I’m really excited.

What can audiences expect to hear from you at your concert on August 6th?

The program that I’m playing during this tour, I believe, is quite interesting. I tried to put together pieces and compositions of really different styles, different epochs of music - something that audiences wouldn’t normally hear performed together. The first part of the concert is traditional classical music like Bach and Schubert, but the pieces I’m playing are not necessarily the most popular or well-known ones, as I have also chosen many of their earlier pieces. I think it’ll be quite interesting to listen to.

The second part of the concert is mostly about contemporary Russian music. It’s all music from the 20th Century, starting with Shostakovich’s Piano Sonata No. 1 which is quite unusual, even for Shostakovich; it’s very furious, written when he was quite young, maybe around 17 or 18, and it’s not often played.

What does the future hold for you?

I have quite a busy season planned for 2017 - 18. I’ll probably have a really short break, and then I will start travelling and playing again in different countries. The tricky part of this tour is that while I’m travelling here, I am in the process of learning the new program for the next season.

I don’t really have any holidays, but this travelling around is an eye-opening experience. I have plans to do a few recordings next year, not only for Hyperion, which is a part of the SIPCA prize, but for some other labels, so I’m preparing new programs. I’m very excited about coming back to Australia next year!

I was always told was an old Chinese curse. Well, it turns out it’s not. Fake news! But why should interesting times be a curse anyway, if you keep your wits about you?

W

hatever the irony, having had another hospital spell, I’ve had plenty of opportunity to refocus and recalibrate. Times are certainly interesting in our region. The more my experiences tell me, the more I’m convinced we can have tremendous opportunities here.

People all over the world are tired of adversarial politics. Now we’re in an era when decisive strategic thinking in a collaborative atmosphere pays more than ever. Or, we’ll be condemned to slipping backwards and out of the game.

It’s been marvellous to feel a lift in energy and morale here over the past months of administration, and I do hope some won’t look for fault with every new announcement, rather looking for the things to be glad about. The announcement of the new Super School is a case in point. The students I’ve asked so far have all seen it as a good thing - after all, they’re the market, and surely we should listen to the coming generations? The Principals of Duval and Armidale High seem excited, and the district P&C President, despite some concerns, said, “We are an education hotspot … this will enhance (all) those facilities - it’s great for the kids and the teachers”. Our hard-working State MP, Adam Marshall, obviously listened around and worked for this result.

As far as I can see, the provision of a Performing Arts Centre there brings yet another standout facility to our region, at last providing a venue for visiting “blockbuster” shows and large conferences. At the same time, realistically it will predominantly be for the school community and would inevitably fall into the same problems the general community have with booking Lazenby when it’s needed by the university. The same is happening for smaller shows at the Hoskins as TAS grows. Institutional use answers the perennial question of viability for a space.

Meanwhile, what’s wrong with working for a central, smaller purpose-built space in the city?

There’s an exciting new possibility, as well as a site proposed near NERAM. In Victoria there’s talk about creating a new 14 New England focus.

“education city”. We have rather a headstart, don’t we? Reading more than tealeaves, tapping into the future we could be accepted as one of the most desirable places to live in the nation, one where the need for plumbers, electricians, carpenters, teachers, doctors, butchers, bakers and (scented) candlemakers is self-generating.

Tempers in metropolitan cities are noticeably getting shorter, and more people look for a future outside increasingly uneven struggles in a tightening population boom. We need to be active in promoting ourselves.

My recent Sydney hospital experiences led me to hope that when our rebuild opens, it won’t follow the same big-city mindset - technology removing the personal, with a worrying tendency towards inefficiency and waste while staff are hypnotised by their computers as robots pass them with linen and food. Here we still can have warmer, people-focused attitudes. I hope bureaucracy doesn’t snuff this out.

I was lucky to be present in the Armidale Cemetery at the dedication of a memorial commemorating Aboriginal people buried in unmarked graves. The ceremony was another marking a busy local NAIDOC week, themed “Our Languages Matter”. [As an early NADOC (sic) Honorary General Secretary after leaving Qantas Special Promotions, NAIDOC holds particular meaning for me.]

Exciting to see NERAM doing a Cinderella, getting ready to dance at the ball. Another positive new chapter and another great lift to overall morale.

We must never forget that agriculture created our towns. Food production offers immense career opportunities, on-farm to university.

Beef, lambs, mutton and wool prices continue to please, with positivity generally in the sector.

People always need to eat, and we can continue to meet that market.

Let’s keep morale on a high and look to the future with fresh views, opening ourselves to new transformative options in the coming Council elections.

We are well into rehearsals for the Red Balloon, with 25 dedicated performers (aged six to 60), creating a Parisian world in Hanna’s Arcade in Armidale.

Come along to the Kentucky Spring Fair and Challenge and enjoy all the fun of a good old country fair!

ell us about the changes the group will be making?

We will be holding a Fair and Challenge on the second Sunday in September annually, with the first being Sunday 10 September 2017, 9am - 2pm at The Kentucky Memorial Hall. All of your favourite market stalls will be there: handmade clothing, gourmet jams, cheeses, cordials and relishes, confectionery, honey, free range eggs, skin care, art, jewellery, and candles, just to name a few, showcasing both local and regional producers and businesses.

Tell us a little about the Kentucky Spring Fair and Challenge ... The challenge will incorporate different community activities each year for adults and kids. This year it will include a TugO-War and hobby horse races - our twist on the Kentucky Derby! The activities will include teams for the adults and kids. We have some great ideas for next year too!

We suggest those who want to be involved register their teams with us as soon as they can, as September will be here before you know it!

What events and entertainment do you have lined up so far for the fair? Tug-OWar, hobby horse races and cake decorating competition - for adults and kids, market stalls, jumping castle, face painting, lolly scatter.

During the day there will also be music, dance and Karate displays.

What makes it such a special day? The fair is held in the picturesque village of Kentucky; the atmosphere is social and relaxed. The BBQ will be busy cooking up a sausage sizzle from 10am, and great espresso coffee will be available from the shop from 8:30am. The community of Kentucky would like to invite all the surrounding towns to a day out in the country, to have some fun and meet the locals!

Tell us about the Kentucky Progress Association ...

Kentucky Progress Association was established in September 2010. In the months following its establishment, mail outs were sent to the local community and the school community in order to obtain feedback from the community about activities and projects.

One of the items requested was a village market, which was established in December 2011.

At this time, the KPA successfully launched its own seasonal craft and produce market, which accommodated up to 30 stallholders showcasing both local and regional producers and businesses. The KPA market is currently a quarterly event, with each market focused on a different season or significant calendar period.

All monies raised from the market go directly back into the community, with youth based activities and projects being our focus.

Leading them is Gordon Cope, who narrates the story of Pascal, a lonely, young boy who finds a red balloon tied to a lamppost. The balloon becomes Pascal’s special friend, following him everywhere he goes. However, it also has a mind of its own, playing mischievous games with him. Finally the balloon reveals its true spirit, by standing by Pascal as he is surrounded and harassed by a bunch of bullies.

Based on a short Academy Award winning film made by Albert Lamorisse in 1956, The Red Balloon is a story about finding friendship and having courage in the face of trouble and adversity.

The French flavour is enhanced with songs arranged by Ben Thorn, movement by Faith Hall, costumes by Margaret Sims, sound by Robert Baker. Other performers are Ethan Bylee, Darcy, Kirralee and Lewis Dwyer, Mary Evans, Alma and

Why has the group decided to change the market format? Since establishing the first market in December 2011, the group has run 22 successful markets. However, since the first market there has been a steady increase of markets right across the New England, to a stage where market goers can attend a market on any Saturday or Sunday throughout the area, including some which have been scheduled to clash with other existing markets. With this in mind, the group has decided to revamp the whole format, placing all our ideas and energy into holding an annual village fair, with fresh and exciting changes each year!

We are on the lookout for fresh, new and interesting stallholders, and we just request no second hand goods or garage sale goods to be included on the stalls. We are also on the lookout for a face painter. Our wonderful face painter, Fiona, may not be available this time round, so give us a call if you would like to apply!

Rodgers & An Evening with

Hammerstein

Armidale DRAMA and MUSICAL SOCIETY and Armidale SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Rodgers and Hammerstein were the talented duo who created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s-50s, with classics such as ‘The Sound of Music’​, ‘Carousel’, ‘South Pacific’ ​and ‘The King and I’. Bruce Menzies, ​who will conduct the Armidale Drama and Musical Society and the Armidale Symphony Orchestra,​​ tells us about the event,​ ‘​An Evening with Rodgers & Hammerstein​’ happening this August.

ruce, tell us about yourself and your role within R&H. Neil Horton ​and I h ​ ave a bit of a history with putting on concerts of music from famous shows. We combine two groups we are involved w ​ ith​​: ​Neil Horton​ is ​President of the Armidale Drama & Musical Society (ADMS), and ​I play and occasionally conduct for the Armidale Symphony Orchestra​ (ASO). Every couple of years for the last ​ decade​we have put on a show,​​where we join ​forces​to rehearse and perform music from the great musicals. We’ve performed A Night On Broadway​​, ​The Magic of ​Gilbert & Sullivan, Showboat, the music of Cole Porter a​​nd this year we will be putting on a concert of music from the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

For those who don’t know about R&H, ​ remind us of their work ...

Well, Richard Rodgers was a writer of musicals, and Oscar Hammerstein was a ​c​omposer. After working with other collaborators, they got together and wrote musicals​which were huge successes in the 1940s and ‘50s. Think ​of T​ he King and I, South Pacific, Oklahoma, Carousel and The Sound of Music.

Who’s involved in this production?

A principal dancer and creative choreographer with the Melbourne City Ballet, Brendan Bradshaw hails from Wauchope. From a small country town to the world stage, Brendan’s talent and hard work has led to many opportunities … and he’s very excited to be visiting area as Oberon, King of the Fairies, in Michael Pappalardo’s adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream …

i Brendan. You're originally from Wauchope! What do you remember most about growing up and beginning to dance

there?

Yes, I moved to Wauchope when I was three years old, and I began ballet lessons as a six year old (because I wanted to do whatever my six month older niece did) under the nurturing eye of Francessca O'Donnell, where I stayed until I moved away to full-time dance school at 16.

You've danced for a few companies over the years, including the Australian Ballet School and the Queensland Ballet, but ten years of your career were also spent in New Zealand. How did spending this length of time in another country ultimately influence your skills and career?

I was extremely lucky. Before leaving Wauchope, I hadn't left NSW really, then after graduating from the Australian Ballet School, I joined the Royal NZ ballet and in the first six months there I was fortunate enough to do a six week tour of the U.K. I couldn't believe a little ballet hopeful from Wauchope was performing on the world stage. Not only did I get to tour extensively throughout NZ, but I also toured China, America, France and Australia.

You've been with Melbourne City Ballet

It will be a treat for young and old and a delight for young budding ballerinas and male dancers to see this level of entertainment in their own towns and will hopefully give them some inspiration and motivation to continue on their own dance journey.

How much are you looking forward to revisiting your old stomping ground?

All my family still live in the area, so it means the world to me to be able to bring what I've aspired to be from a young age back to my hometown.

Last year performing Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and now this year with A Midsummer Night’s Dream means I get to show everyone my different interpretations, which is incredibly exciting.

In the eighteen months since the Australian Garden History Society opened the Heritage Rose Garden at Saumarez Homestead, the garden has grown and flourished, attracting hundreds of visitors, as well as the attention of garden historians and writers, garden clubs, community organisations and visiting politicians.

t has also added an extra attraction to the already vibrant historic gardens and buildings which make up the National Trust complex at Armidale.

The development of Stage One of the garden, which was started because of the very generous donation of hundreds of heritage roses from local resident, Miss Catherine MacLean, has been instigated and continued by local members of the Australian Garden History Society. They have sourced the funding and provided the man power to install and maintain the hundreds of roses which are now thriving on the site of what was the old orchard at Saumarez.

They have done so with the help of local organisations including Back Track, Rotary, Lions and local businesses.

“The development of the Heritage Rose Garden Saumarez Homestead has already had an impact on broadening the demographic of visitors to Saumarez Homestead. In particular, garden clubs, from near and far, have come to Saumarez Homestead specifically to see the amazing collection of heritage roses that has been established here,” said Les Davis, Property Manager at Saumarez Homestead.

Now the Armidale Regional Council has approved funding of $43,656 to the Australian Garden History Society for the development of its Heritage Rose Garden Stage 2, which continues on from the design of Stage 1 by local AGHS member and UNE botanist, Dr Ian Telford.

Armidale Regional Council Administrator Dr Ian Tiley said that Armidale is home to the Northern NSW sub-branch of the Australian Garden History Society, which promotes awareness and conservation of significant gardens and cultural landscapes.

“This funding will enable the Society to complete the planned Heritage Rose Garden Project - a project which will have cultural, educational and economic benefits for the

region,” Dr Tiley said.

Helen Oates, rose committee sub branch co-Chair of the Australian Garden History Society, said, “The completion of Stage 2 of the Heritage Rose Garden will allow the inclusion of roses from significant world rose breeders, with an emphasis on Australian breeders, conserving examples of roses which are considered at risk of being lost.” Helen added, “The garden will serve an educative botanical function, helping make the garden unique and promoting its national significance. We envisage this will assist our goal to develop an east coast Rose Trail, extending from Tasmania to Toowoomba, encouraging rose enthusiasts and other tourists to the region.“ The injection of significant funding by the Armidale Regional Council will enable the Northern NSW sub-branch of the Australian Garden History Society to complete the development of one of the most significant heritage rose gardens in the nation. This will contribute to the sustainability of Saumarez Homestead, a National Trust property, and also the Armidale region,” said Les Davis.

Work has already commenced, with the site being levelled, irrigation and edging installed and the structures will be installed in the next few weeks. It is envisaged that the garden will be completed by this time next year.

Over winter, the gardens, grounds and farm area only are open at Saumarez Homestead from 10am to 5pm daily.

On 2nd September 2017, tours of the house and the opening of the café will resume on weekends.

Breast Augmentation.

Breast Augmentation increases breast size and volume with the use of breast implants. It is also done to correct mild breast ptosis (breast droop) or asymmetry.

The results give a very dramatic improvement in appearance as well as a significant confidence boost to the patient.

While there are various types of implants available, the safest and probably the best are the high cohesive silicon gel implants with a textured (rough) outer capsule. The great advantage they offer is the lack of gel dispersion in the unfortunate event of an implant rupture.

Saline filled implants are rarely used as they carry a high (20%) risk of implant leak. There are round as well as biodimensional (natural looking) implants available. The biodimensional implants are preferred as they give a very natural look with or without clothes on, rather than the “breast implanted “ look with the use of round implants. The timing of breast implant surgery is variable.

Many young women choose to have the surgery anytime after the age of 18 due to low breast volume causing great embarassment about their body contour. Others are those who have lost breast volume or have developed breast droop after pregnancies.

Sometimes, there is a need to combine a breast lift operation with augmentation to correct post pregnancy breast volume and droop. Breast implants also have a role in breast reconctruction after surgery for breast cancer.

Celebrate Dental Health Month with Happy Gas; take the fear out of Your Dental Treatment. Nitrous oxide (more commonly known as “happy gas”) is a colourless, tasteless, slightly sweet smelling gas which has significant sedative and analgesic (painkilling) effects.

I

t has been used in Australia by dentists to treat anxious patients since 1847, with the technique we use today being refined back in the 1940s. Its long history of use has given the gas a proven safety record, being safe for use in patients with heart conditions, those on blood thinning medications, poor kidney function, children, and the elderly.

In the dental office, the gas is administered by appropriately trained dentists through a small “hood” which rests over the nose, leaving the mouth and eyes completely unobstructed. The gas is delivered mixed with oxygen, with the percentage being “titrated” (adjusted) to a level specific for each patient to reach their lowest effective dose. This is different to the “happy gas” used for mothers during labour (Entonox) which is delivered as a fixed dose of 50% oxygen to 50% nitrous oxide. The dosages used in the dental office are often much lower than this, sitting at around 35

- 40%. This variable dosage allows a more comfortable and controlled level of sedation for the patient.

The optimum level of sedation is reached slowly, with the dentist monitoring the patient’s breathing and level of alertness. Patients can expect a feeling of warmth, a pleasant tingling throughout the arms and legs, feelings of heavy limbs or floating in the chair, and a general euphoria.

Being nervous or scared about attending for dental treatment is very common.

Nitrous oxide sedation is available and safe for almost all patients and can be helpful in reducing or even eliminating that nervousness or fear. Be it for a simple filling, or for a complex extraction or root canal treatment, nitrous oxide is a safe, easy and affordable alternative to general anaesthetics, or being “knocked out”. hat have you been up to recently?

I’m currently finishing a Master’s level qualification in Orthodontics, but I’ve also been pursuing advanced education in dentofacial aesthetics. Although thread lift treatments have been used in Asia for over a decade, I am one of the first people in Australia to offer them and bring these treatments to the New England. I’ve been offering anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers to my patients for years, but I’m now extending the range of treatments we offer. Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are only two tools in the toolbox when it comes to facial rejuvenation and antiageing therapies. Anti-wrinkle injections only work on one type of wrinkle, dermal fillers only work on another type, but neither works on fine lines and wrinkles, and neither can undo the effects of gravity. In fact, dermal filler can actually exacerbate the problem, if not used correctly. If you want truly good results, then treatments like anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers must be combined (or in some cases replaced by) high quality professional skin care treatments, excellent home skin care, and a range of newer treatments designed to increase the youthfulness of our skin.

So what are we talking about, and what can we do about gravity?

We’re talking about more advanced uses of anti-wrinkle injections to do things like neck-lifts and help lessen and prevent jowl formation, dermal fillers using your own blood products for the most natural product on the market (that is actually cheaper and lasts longer!), but also minimally invasive micro face lifts using advanced thread-lift technologies. These have almost no down time, are done in less than an hour under local anaesthetic, and the effects

last for several years. We’re also talking about advanced micro-needling and other technologies to increase collagen, elastin, and other natural products in the skin, as well as to deliver serums and medications into the skin. We are now able to offer platelet rich plasma therapies, which have been shown to have dramatic effects on improving the youthfulness of skin. We also offer our patients access to advanced home medical grade skin care, that has been shown to activate genes associated with anti-ageing and youthfulness.

and some have even offered to provide free cuppas for the mums during their photo session. I can’t thank them enough for their support, especially since some of the mums have initially been quite nervous about the experience of breastfeeding in public.

One particular mum confided in me after her session that she had never breastfed in public before. She had struggled with breastfeeding right from the start and many well-meaning friends had encouraged her to give up early on, but she chose to persist.

She gave herself small goals to reach and as she reached them she set new ones, and now she is proud to have been able to continue breastfeeding her child for 12 months.

But, up until her PBAP session she had chosen to bring expressed milk in a bottle with her, or stop shopping and go home to feed her child, rather than breastfeed in public. She was nervous about participating in the PBAP, but was so excited to have the support of others at her session, helping her do something so normal, yet so far out of

her comfort zone. After her session she was so proud of herself for achieving another breastfeeding goal. It makes me so happy to know that I’ve played a small part in helping boost another mum’s confidence in herself and her body’s ability to nourish her child, wherever and whenever.

As the PBAP moves forward, we are hoping to have the opportunity to include mums from more cultures and communities, to ensure that we can photograph many different perspectives, challenges and celebrations that impact a woman’s journey through breastfeeding and motherhood.

Although I absolutely love the families and newborns that I photograph on a regular basis, the mums I meet through the PBAP sessions have a special place in my heart.

Each year I learn so much from hearing their breastfeeding experiences and seeing them encourage and support each other during the sessions. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.

There is no light, no lycra, no teacher, no steps to learn, just free movement. It's a place to dance out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself. It occurs in over 75 locations around the world, including NYC, London, Paris, Glasgow, Shanghai and almost every state in Australia. Armidale's sessions are Thursday nights 6:15 - 7:15pm at Legacy Hall, opposite the police station, on Faulkner Street.

Who can do NLNL? NLNL is a drug, alcohol and douchebag free zone. At the heart of NLNL is the belief that everyone can dance. We provide a safe space for all ages and genders to explore this notion.

Where did it start?

NLNL was born out of the desire of two rebellious Melbourne dance students (Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett) to quit critiquing themselves in the mirror and start dancing for 26 New England focus.

Are there rules to NLNL? Our sessions are strictly a talk free zone this might seem strange at first, but it's pivotal to getting lost in yourself and the music. Fitbits and mobile phones must be kept covered at all times, as they emit too much light. Dancing is non-contact, with no dancing in circles with friends. To truly experience NLNL, you need to dance for yourself, not for those around you.

rmidale Care for Seniors Inc. is a not for profit, community based organisation, funded through the Commonwealth Government’s CHSP (Commonwealth Home Support Program). We are governed by a Management Committee comprised of local community members and have two coordinators to organise the programs and daily activities.

We have been involved in the community for over 25 years, providing both social interests and individual support to the "seniors" of the Armidale and surrounding communities. "Seniors" is such a complex word and to us, it is just a label. With our social activities, our focus is to create a place where everyone is welcome.

The activities we hold are varied, to cater for all interests and hobbies. We organise everything from guest speakers, entertainers and musicians to trivia, indoor games (such as bowls) and mystery days (morning tea to a local café etc). Each month our coordinators develop a calendar of activities to let everyone know what is coming up for the next couple of months. Within our social bounds, we have a Senior Gents Group which meet monthly, Tuesday and Thursday Social Seniors who meet each week, our Wednesday Crafters and Friday Card and Game Players. One of our more specialised groups is our Splinters Woodworking group - members of this group get together to work on their own projects under the guidance of our supervisor, while enjoying the get-together with friends. We

have a fully equipped workshop and some materials to assist you to whittle away and create your endeavours. Our supervisor and volunteers are always on hand to support and assist - it is amazing what can be done with a little help. For the more adventurous, we have several daytrips throughout the year, each time travelling to different places of interest. Every so often we hold a "Special Event" day - for July we are hosting a Winter Snowfest in place of Christmas in July. Meals are an important part of any get-together, so we endeavour to have a morning tea and for our longer days, we also have a two course hot lunch. Transport can be provided to any of our activities; it is as easy as discussing this with our Senior Coordinator. For those needing a little more support to access the wider community, Care for Seniors Inc. also provide volunteer support with transport for both medical and general appointments, small grocery shopping and even just popping in for a coffee and chat.

This support is tailored to meet the need of the person, and our aim is to assist rather than "do it for" the person. When we provide support, we try not to put in time constraints - this allows people to take their time and complete all the tasks they need. Social wellbeing is equally important as physical wellbeing. Like any service, we can register you with My Aged Care, so you can join in anything we offer. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you have some time and enjoy socialising, have a chat with us.

House with No Steps Pedal Early Childhood Intervention Service PEDAL EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTION SERVICE is a local community based organisation providing allied health and early childhood intervention programs to children aged 0 - 12 years who have a developmental delay or a disability. PEDAL has been operating for over 34 years and provides services in Armidale, Guyra and Uralla and is an approved NDIS provider for specialised early childhood intervention therapy. PEDAL offers a range of programs from its purpose built centre at 127a Allingham St, Armidale, including Play Therapy and Social Skills programs, Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology.

PEDAL programs are designed by multi-

disciplinary professionals in consultation with parents and carers to address the individual needs of the child. The centre has state of the art resources and a sensory gym tailored to the needs of children with sensory issues.

In addition, therapists meet families at home and conduct programs in a range of natural settings, including preschools, schools and local parks.

PEDAL also offers small group therapy sessions in music, handwriting skills and Transition to School programs. PEDAL’s talented staff assist children to achieve their full potential through targeted therapy and specialist programs.

At House with No Steps, our Life Skills groups are a fun and social way for people with a disability to learn new skills and work towards increasing their independence. The groups meet at our Armidale Hub from 10am 2pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; however, you don’t need to attend every day.

The groups focus on topics such as preparing for work or volunteering, relationships and money management. It’s all about learning how to use these newly acquired skills in your day-to-day life. It’s also a great way to meet people and make new friends, as the groups regularly get together for nights out.

We can also assist students to transition from Year 12 school life to adult life through the NDIS School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program. House with No Steps can provide you with individualised and group support to assist you to identify goals and supports, with a focus on employment.

We can assist you to develop the skills and confidence to find and keep a job or work experience placement. We offer activities and training that contribute to achieving an employment outcome and linkages to ongoing employment support.

The Ascent Group is a prominent local community organisation, with a proud history reaching over 62 years, providing support to people with disability in the New England region. Originally established in 1955 to provide otherwise unavailable schooling for children in Armidale with developmental disabilities, Ascent has evolved over the years by continually responding to meet the changing needs of people with disability.

Today, Ascent is focused on a bright future as a contemporary National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Provider of choice. We have chosen our new logo to communicate who we are and what we can do to support our customers’ aspirations to reach higher and achieve great outcomes.

What has changed?

Over the last twelve months, Ascent has been at the forefront of the national roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. We have been working closely with the people we support and their families, to ensure a smooth transition to the NDIS. The expo offers a place to showcase organisations that provide services to increase independence and quality of life.

The expo is targeted at people with disability, friends, families and carers who are looking to talk to different service providers. People will also be able to talk to businesses that provide aids, equipment, innovative technology and services, which may not have been available to them in the past.

The program will concentrate on enabling strong links with mainstream services, as well as family and community supports to help people with a disability reach their goals of being able to participate more socially and economically in their communities.

What’s unique about the Support Your Path program?

There are a few aspects of the Support Your

Path program that make it an optimal choice for those seeking assistance.

We’re looking to lead in the area of truly flexible and person-centred service provision and to enhance the quality of service and lives of our participants through this service. Our program’s approach allows individuals to take ownership of their supports, valuing each person’s opinions and choices. In addition, we’ll be operable outside the nine to three model, to provide the needed flexibility and availability that participants are seeking.

From an employee standpoint, we’re also focusing on onboarding long-term, quality support workers that we match with participants based on similarities and interests, to provide a more personalised, one-on-one experience.

Support Your Path?

At this time, we have two different programs under Support Your Path, each providing distinct services from one another: Support Your Path Your Life, and Support Your Path - Your Choice.

This program is for participants seeking oneon-one, group and residential supports to access the community and gain greater independence, obtain employment, build capacity within their community and achieve goals as set out in their plans.

These supports include accommodation tenancy, assistance with accessing and maintaining employment, assistance with personal activities, assistance with life stages and transition, travel and transport, development of life skills, household tasks and participating in the community.

Tell us more about Support Your Path - Your Choice?

This program is for participants who are looking for assistance in implementing and managing plans, researching options and in pre-planning for

their planning meetings with the NDIS. Support workers assist participants with co-ordination of supports, as approved in their plan, who are seeking assistance in co-ordinating their services, future planning and goal-setting, exploring options within the community and resolving points of crisis. In addition, Your Choice will offer pre-planning workshops to participants, families and carers who are seeking support in readiness for their meeting with an NDIS planner or Local Area Co-ordinator.

These workshops will equip families and participants with appropriate knowledge and wording to ensure they achieve the best possible outcome in their NDIS plan.

Challenge can assist you or someone you care for to prepare a pre-plan in the lead-up to your NDIS meeting. This enables you to gain a clear understanding of the terminology involved, services you currently use, supports to consider and your personal goals.

Challenge Disability Services Senior Manager Maxine Smith has welcomed the NDIS in the New England region. “We have met with many

people over the last three years who have previously received no funding, and have had to pay for help from their own wallets, many already under financial strain,” Maxine said.

“Under the NDIS they may be deemed as eligible and receive paid supports that could be life changing for them and their families.”

Challenge can assist you with filling out paperwork, help to explain your NDIS plan, attend NDIS meetings with you and give you advice on how to manage your plan.

According to the NDIS March Quarterly Report, confidence in the NDIS amongst participants also appears to be good, with 88 per cent surveyed saying their experience was either good or very good, and 87 per cent saying they believed the NDIS would improve their life.

Once again we have experienced a very busy winter holiday period at the Armidale Visitor Information Centre. We have received visitors from all over Australia who are chasing the real winter experience - especially frosty mornings and cosy fires.

D

id you know the Armidale Visitor Information Centre assists more than 34,000 visitors every year?

Local knowledge is the cornerstone of an excellent Visitor Information Centre, and last month we were fortunate to have been invited along to tour some of the wonderful National Parks attractions with local National Parks and Wildlife rangers based in our Walcha office.

The first stop was Muleurindie, located in the Warrabah National Park. Muluerindie Cabin is a secluded self contained stone cabin overlooking the Namoi River. This lovely hand-built cabin has been refurbished so that it retains its original charm, complete with natural granite walls and open fireplaces. It now also features lavish touches, including beautiful big glass windows and doors opening onto a large timber deck overlooking the Namoi River. The cabin can accommodate up to eight people in its open plan design and has a fully equipped kitchen and a gas BBQ on the timber deck. Warrabah National Park is located 60 km west of Uralla via the Retreat Road. The second adventure was to Halls Peak Camping area via Raspberry Road. Halls Peak is a secluded camping and fishing spot that can only be accessed by low range/high clearance 4WD. Raspberry Road is a challenging 4WD track that would suit adventure seekers looking for a remote riverside wilderness. Bookings are made through the Armidale Visitor Information Centre on 6770 3888.

The final destination was to East Kunderang Homestead. This historic cedar homestead sits spectacularly among the mountains and valleys of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. The homestead sleeps up to 14 people, so there is plenty of room for a family or group of friends.

There are lots of activities to keep you occupied, including swimming or fishing in a nearby river as well as bushwalking or birdwatching.

A wonderful new outdoor entertainment area provides the perfect location to relax, and enjoy the view and splendid isolation of the property.

This year’s competition is now open for entries from all Australia residents and closes 21 Sept 2017. Over the years, The New England Thunderbolt Prize has launched the writing career of a number of aspiring crime writers.

In 2013, Emma Viskic, then an aspiring crime writer from Melbourne, won the first year of the competition in the main category of Crime Fiction. She then went on to have stories placed and shortlisted in numerous other competitions and has been published in Award Winning Australian Writing.

In 2016, winning entries came from Ballarat resident and writer Maryanne Ross. Maryanne won the 2016 New England Prize for Crime Writing Fiction, as well as the Emerging Author Award.

The Thunderbolt competition is run by the New England Writers’ Centre, based in Armidale, where a number of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers arrange a full program of activities to encourage new and emerging talent to reach their potential in writing. Kody how long have you been with Retro Clean? I have been with Retro Clean for five months. I know it doesn’t sound long, but I have already gained a lot of useful skills.

What skills have you gained in this time?

I have completed IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) training in carpet and upholstery cleaning.

These courses have given me a lot of skills and knowledge, so that I can complete work as a professional to the Australian Standard (AS/ NZS 3773:1995).

What do you enjoy most about working at Retro Clean? I really enjoy the appreciation from valued customers, after completing work at their homes and places of business, and

Oliver, how long have you been working with Retro Green? I have been with Retro Green for only three months, but already I have had the opportunity to complete some interesting training.

What has this training included? I have completed working at heights, and rope access training; both of these give me nationally recognised ARAA (Australian Rope Access Association) skills that allow me to assist in all required tasks associated with tree climbing, removal and lopping.

What is it that you enjoy most about working at Retro Green? The training provided has defined a clear career path, and this is important to my young family, given we have a new addition arriving late December.

Tony Williams Machinery manufacture Williams Seeders.

Anthony Williams, along with the team at TWM Armidale, have brought Williams Seeders to the market. Anthony has grown up in his family’s business. TWM Armidale sell and service tractors and other farm machinery.

TWM Armidale have sold a lot of different brands of seeders; one of these was Agrow Drill. While transporting these from Wellington, Anthony used to think to himself, “Why can’t we build these?”

The prototype was built in Anthony’s garage at home, applying his many years of experience to improve the functionality of today’s seeders. They sold the first Williams Seeder to clients in Walcha in 2001. In 2003, Stephen Grills, a qualified boiler maker, came on board. So through the expertise of Stephen and Anthony’s knowledge of the needs of the clients, Williams Seeders was born.

Together with Stephen, the machines have evolved to incorporate many different options. The machines have been designed with ease of use, low maintenance and strength in mind, to suit the New England conditions. Anthony has always said, “If they are built to suit New England farmers, they will work anywhere”. They are now selling machines Australia wide.

TWM gets great satisfaction seeing the finished product being delivered to the customer, knowing it is going to work well for them for many years to come.

OUTCROSS

hat does OUTCROSS do? OUTCROSS is precision livestock management consulting, software and contracting for the Australian beef cattle industry. We are a service provider to the beef industry, and we do about 80% of our work at sale yards. With a mix of consulting, technology and labour contracting, we help the client meet regulatory requirements and improve efficiency in the sale yards.

Is this done by software? Yes, we provide consulting services, followed by technology solutions and finally labour to implement the recommendations of the consulting, or to help clients manage the technology e.g. running the software and getting the most out of the systems.

How did you start? I was working in a related area in terms of managing commercial research projects, doing data management for beef industry participants and traceability work for product from farm through to retail. In 2008, I had an opportunity to branch out and start my own business.

What is your typical day? I spend about half my time in the office doing consulting and business development. The other time is spent out visiting sites, which could be as far away as Blackall in North Queensland to as far south as Hamilton in Victoria. We cover a broad geographical area. If I’m out on site, you’ll find me catching up with members of our 25 staff, or liaising with clients, making sure we are meeting expectations.

What is one of the biggest challenges you face in your business? I would have to say working in the sale yards. What we do is rather complex; for example, today we have 5,500 head of cattle and have to provide the software and NLIS (scanning of the ear tags) of all the cattle, setting up all the accurate sale catalogs and physically draft cattle too. Everything is highly time dependent.

What is one rewarding part of you job? As an owner of a very unique business, it’s very satisfying to see our team overcome the hurdles and achieve the many types of outcomes and to work as a team. It’s not an easy job, so it’s most rewarding to see the business excel.

TONY WILLIAMS MACHINERY

i Tony, what do you do? I’m the owner and Director of Tony Williams Machinery and Williams Seeders.

How long have you been in the industry? In 1980, 37 years ago, I started with my father, Tony.

What’s a typical day for you? There are no two days the same, that’s for sure. One day I could be 50 km east of Tenterfield, and the next day halfway to Wauchope. Other days, you’ll find me in the office building seeders, fixing or selling tractors and talking with customers.

Tell us a little about the Williams Seeder. It was developed in 2000, and in 2003 we built five. We are about to hit the 300th seeder. The Williams Seeder is specifically designed for the New England and surround ground conditions. The Williams Seeder seeds a range of crops, from high performance pasture right through to common oats.

So was it because of the harder soils that you created the Williams Seeder? No, not harder soils, but much more rocky soils. The dense rocky land was damaging machines that weren’t designed for such rocky and undulating land types. This is what got me thinking about crafting our own machines.

hat do you do? I am a director/founder of Impact AG. We manage agricultural assets for domestic and off shore investors.

Our team of analysts, farm managers and operational professionals based in Armidale ensure that the operational management is executed according to the business plan and investment strategy.

How long have you been in business? Since founded, about eight years so far.

Most rewarding part of your job? I guess one of the most rewarding parts is meeting really interesting people from around the world. We get to learn from them; we get to learn from different economies in different countries.

It’s a global business? Our clients are domestic and international, there farm assets are here in Australia.

What’s the most challenging part of your business? Managing the variables and things that are out of my control. However, we overcome these with technology, my team, being proactive and prepared.

What’s your day look like?

Do you class yourself as an inventor?

Well, I didn’t invent the wheel, but I have adapted the previous seeder designs to handle the rough conditions the New England has to throw at it.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Meeting so many people from around the New England.

Wow, that could be in the office here in Armidale, or on site at a client’s property, or in a capital city somewhere talking to potential clients. There really isn’t a typical day, and it’s probably what I like most about it. It has so many different aspects about it; it’s always varied and never a dull moment.

Favourite food? Well as you can imagine, I am a meat eater! I would have to say my wife, Sue’s, roast lamb - with a 150 Lashes Pale Ale to accompany it.

What is the most challenging part? Putting up with the ones that are a pain in the bum! (Laughs.)

Favourite food? My wife or mother’s baked dinner.

How you feel that your business revolutionises the industry?

I think we offer a new level of investor expectation. Ag is now seen as an investment sector and asset class. We are offering a service that utilises technology where it can and professional services that are matched with our asset managers.

Where is BCM (Bicycle Central on Marsh) and how long have you owned your business? BCM is positioned on Marsh Street at the Wicklow Complex ... Ideally opening onto the Wicklow sporting fields and the bicycle pathway, the perfect spot to test a new bike. Holly Harris and I took over the business last October from Holly’s parents, David and Lisa.

What makes BCM a special business? At BCM we are passionate about offering friendly, knowledgeable customer service and quality products. We stock a vast range of road and mountain bikes. Qualified bike mechanics offer in store servicing. BCM provides quality group and individual coaching, giving all skill levels (including the beginner), the confidence and knowledge to conquer our local mountain bike trails.

What do you love most about what you do? Owning a retail bicycle business is interesting, rewarding and lots of fun. We are one big family at BCM, and I look forward to our social rides every Saturday morning at 7am and Wednesday afternoon at 5:30pm. Both rides leave from the shop and venture out to the UNE trail. Everyone is welcome. We particularly enjoy giving back to the community through our involvement with the New England Mountain Bikers, Armidale Get Active and the Two Wheel Academy.

What is it that you do at OUTCROSS? OUTCROSS is a business which has been at the forefront of integrating technology into the beef industry. In the late nineties, once leaving UNE, Tom worked with the pastoral giant Stanbroke Pastoral Company for two years, which gave him a taste of northern beef production. In 2008, Tom established the company OUTCROSS, which provides practical livestock software and efficient contracting solutions, Australia-wide. He has experience working with over a hundred leading pastoral properties in Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory - providing data collection, contracting, technology and key management services. OUTCROSS has also developed livestock software for saleyards and stud sales, focusing on flexible client needs and efficient processing. STOCKYARD software is currently in use in 18 saleyards across Australia and is backed by a supportive team of technology and livestock professionals. Tom is from the New England, born and bred in Glen Innes and now lives in Armidale, where he bases his business and family life from.

What plans does OUTCROSS have for the future?

The next big challenge for OUTCROSS is the introduction of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) for sheep in Victoria. Tom is spending a lot of time south of the border, helping out Victorian Saleyards with Sheep NLIS compliance.

How long have you been in business? Richardson & Wrench has been operating continuously since 1858 and in Armidale since 2009. What type of properties do you sell? Everything, really.

It is true that during the past eight years Janet and I have been involved in the sale of many of Armidale’s most iconic, period homes.

However, our emphasis has always been on people and relationships. These days most of our vendors are over 55 and they have some unique property requirements, either transitioning to, or in, their retirement. Being 61 myself, I get that.

How does your business give back to the community? We see our role in the Armidale community as being far more than simply operating a small, family business. We reach out to local organisations and charities as a normal part of what we do. Sponsorships, donations and providing ongoing financial support to others are all very important to us.

i Jeremy; can you tell us about your background?

I was born and raised here in Armidale and when I finished high school, I worked for the family construction business for 10 or 11 years. I’m married with five children. I started courting my wife, Nik, when she was 17, although it took me a couple of years to persuade her. We’ve been married for 10 years and a couple for 20.

I spent a fair bit of time of my early career working away from Armidale and came back to Armidale as a full-time base when I started JNC. What inspired you to start JNC? The birth of my first child, Charlie, was the catalyst for my wife, Nicole, and I to start JNC in June 2007. I’m a second-generation earthmover and started out in the family civil business, Bricon, in the late ‘90s, but left because I wanted to spend more time with my family.

I understand there is a story behind the name?

Originally JNC stood for Jeremy, Nik and Charlie - but with five children now in the mix, Jeremy, Nik and Children is probably the more appropriate explanation.

You run a very large, widespread suite of businesses. How do you balance work with your family life?

How long have you been in insurance? I’ve been working in the insurance industry for over twenty years, with the last 17 of those spent working in Armidale. I started with Commercial Union (now CGU) in Newcastle, before being transferred to Armidale in 2000 with that company. In November of 2000, I was asked to take over management of the Elders Insurance Franchise; I then purchased the business in 2004. Today, we now also own the Tamworth and Gunnedah Elders Insurance franchises.

Who is Herman Beyersdorf ? I have lived in Armidale for over 40 years, and was an Associate Professor of German at UNE. I became a Councillor in 1991, and have served six terms. I have been involved in many committees, including being Chair of the Economic Development Committee (2008 - 2012) and the Environmental Sustainability Committee (2012 - current). I have served two terms as Deputy Mayor, and one term as Mayor (2015 - 16). I am married and have four adult children.

Why do you want to stand for the upcoming Council elections? I believe that I have a lot of accumulated experience to offer to the new Council. My over 24 years on Council have given me a wide range of expertise and a deep knowledge of all issues affecting local government.

What are the issues you are most passionate about for our region? I am keen to see the airport industrial development finalised. We need to continually improve our waste management and recycling. Council should play a role in developing a community use for the Old Teachers’ College.

Continued revitalising of the Mall is very important, and I would also like to see the beautification of Dumaresq Creek through a series of weirs and ponds.

Who is Jack Rapley? I have been a resident of Armidale for more than 20 years, and during this time I have taken a very keen interest in the community. I was a business manager in the pharmaceutical industry before becoming a business owner of a family company, which has been operating for more than 30 years.

Why am I running? I believe I have the qualifications, energy, and enthusiasm, as well as wide business experience to make a positive contribution to our great city. The ARC is a very large and diverse business, which needs to be run as such by competent Council staff, and Councillors, who are team players with a “can do” attitude.

What are the main issues? I am not a single issue candidate, and there are many and varied projects to be addressed. These include attracting new businesses to Armidale and Guyra, therefore creating employment, and population increases, developing more youth services, tourism initiatives, improving roads and bridges in the rural areas of the total area of the new amalgamated Council.

We have had an administrator in place for some months, and during this time considerable advances have been made in getting projects underway. A new Council must ensure that this progress is continued, by keeping the momentum going with other developments.

Jim Maher.

Who is Jim Maher? I am an experienced, dedicated and visionary community leader. I served on Armidale Dumareq Council for 12.5 years, four as Deputy Mayor and one as Mayor, 2012 - 2013. I was the Foundation Chair of the New England Area Health Service (23 hospitals and 28 community health centres) and am a former Chair of the Armidale and New England Hospital Board (responsible for the Armidale and Guyra Hospitals). I lectured at UNE in Political Science for 25 years and previously taught in local schools. Armidale has been home for 37 years, and I love this region. I have three children and have been heavily involved in a range of community organisations, usually in leadership positions. I hold a Ph.D in Political Science (University of Calgary, Canada), a Masters degree (UNE) and a BA. Dip. Ed (University of Newcastle).

Why do you want to stand for the upcoming election?

The Armidale region has enormous potential, but it hasn’t been fully realised. I want Council to lead the region’s economic revival, thereby underpinning the social, cultural and environmental sustainability of our community. I have the experience, commitment and vision to make it happen, in conjunction with fellow councillors, our community and state and federal governments.

Who is Simon Murray? I am a cattle grazier with a passion for innovation and working on the land. My early years were spent on large cattle properties in northern Queensland before departing to the city for education, where I finished with an engineering degree. I was employed as a lecturer at UNE in the Natural Resources and Rural Science degree programs over 30 years ago.

We purchased our cattle property 18 years ago, and I transitioned out of UNE to become a full-time farmer. Since then I have been involved in the community from the local landcare organisation SNELCC, the NSW SES and NSW Rural Fire Service. I also put my hand up for and was elected into the last Guyra Shire Council.

Why are you running for the ARC (Armidale Regional Council)? I have terrific support from the wider community from Ebor, Tingha, Guyra and Armidale areas who have encouraged me to put my hand up as a Councillor. I strongly believe

there must be people from outside the city of Armidale on the new Council, to listen to and support the wider region that is now the ARC. What would you bring to the new ARC? I enjoy supporting and engaging with the community; I have good communication skills and empathy with people from a wide range of backgrounds. I have the ability to listen to people and to understand complex issues and if elected, I will consider each issue before Council with due diligence and fairness.

What would you like to see the new Council achieve in your term? I firmly believe there must be equitability across the whole Council region. A new Council needs to also look at all opportunities to encourage new businesses and industry to the region, meanwhile fully supporting existing businesses. I would also like to see better co-operation between the ARC and neighbouring Councils promoting our common strengths.

Candidate for Armidale Regional Council Stimulating economic growth and development, while enhancing the lifestyle of the Armidale region, is the key to the sustainable future of the region. The creation of more job opportunities, particularly for young people, is paramount.

The support for growth in tourism, arts, culture and heritage will become even more significant as an economic driver for growth and prosperity in the region.

As a teacher and school principal (13 years), media producer (10 years), local grazier (25 years) and Saumarez Homestead Manager (eight years) Les Davis has a wealth of relevant experience that he can use to be an effective member of the new Armidale Regional Council.

Who is Colin Gadd? I came to this region 58 years ago. I was educated at Armidale High School, Armidale Teachers’ College, UNE and TAFE Armidale. After living away for nearly thirty years, I returned with my family in 1995, and this is where we choose to live.

Why do you want to stand for the upcoming Council elections? I am proud to have have been a member of the Armidale Dumaresq Council for seven years. I believe that the most essential qualification for a Local Government Councillor is to have an extensive knowledge and affection for the region and to have proven themselves to be a community minded person, prepared to give back to the region where they live.

I am involved in many community activities and organisations.

I listen to the concerns of the people, and I am prepared to act on their behalf. Although I live in Armidale, I have been a resident of the Guyra district and still have many connections there.

What are the issues you are most passionate about for our region? A major challenge for the new Council will be to ensure that all residents feel that their opinions and ideas are being heard. The continued development of the Council owned industrial estate at Armidale Regional Airport, a safe and secure water supply for Guyra and the continued maintenance and development of recreational and sporting facilities are my priorities.

Who Is Andrew Murat? As an independent candidate, I wish to drive forward sustainable growth and prosperity for the Armidale Regional Council Area.

Why do you want to stand for the upcoming Council elections? I feel I have the business experience and a proven track-record with projects such as the Airport, with which I have been greatly involved, RSPCA shelter and drive through post box to show that I am not all promises and talk, but someone who will strive to achieve the aims and goals set by the community.

What are the issues you are most passionate about for our region? My goals for Armidale are to review the core functions of Council, how these are delivered to the community, the achievement of greater economic efficiencies and to streamline planning and building approvals. Economic development and tourism need a major overhaul, as they are clearly not meeting the expectations of the community. We need to complete the industrial land project at the Airport to attract sustainable business, to stimulate population growth and Council income in order to fund the things the community expects and aspires to.

Other ideas I wish to pursue include increasing the capacity of Malpas Dam, by raising the dam wall using Federal and State water security grants. Pipelines could be run to Uralla and Walcha, as well as Guyra. If intensive agricultural projects could be established along the pipeline, what would that add to the employment and growth of the region?

Gordon Cope I love the Northern Tablelands, and Armidale in particular.

I had a Tenterfield grazing property for 15 years and came to Armidale as the Senior Social Worker for Centrelink in 1991. I have been a strong participant in the cultural life of the city, as well as a supporter of many of its services - notably the North and North West Community Legal Centre, The Armidale Playhouse and the Armidale Drama and Musical Society.

Why do you want to stand for the upcoming Council elections?

Like many resident of the city, I have been dismayed by the log jam in Council over many years where ideological ideas and self interest prevailed over the wellbeing of the community. I feel that this is the one opportunity in many years for the electorate to install fresh and talented individuals who can work co-operatively together.

In my view, the traditional local government approach of “top down” informing and consultation goes only part way to genuine commitment to community participation and engagement. For me, an effective well performing Council listens attentively and heeds its constituent’s views and wishes.

It is vital that ARC is open, transparent and accountable, making decisions in the best interests of the public. Council needs to develop and strengthen trust with the community and build citizen confidence in Council’s capacity to plan and make decisions that will respond to the present and future needs of the constituents of the LGA. Effective community engagement is an integral part of developing Council plans, policies, and the provision of services and assets. Engagement is an important part of the democratic system under which Council operates. Best practice community engagement should be built on openness, transparency, trust, and respect.

An engagement strategy should outline the commitment, principles, and engagement framework under which opportunities will be made available for the community to contribute to the Council’s decision-making processes.

The community should be kept well informed throughout the engagement process and receive feedback that demonstrates how their input influenced the decision.

Community engagement should apply to all facets of Council’s operations including corporate, strategic land use, financial planning, and Council’s day to day business activities. It needs to be multifaceted, requiring a standard

of consultation that appropriately responds to the nature, complexity and impact of the matters involved. Engagement methods and techniques used will vary according to circumstances.

A consistent approach should be undertaken

by Council and staff in relation to projects requiring community consultation. It is vital to create an organisational culture and staff capacity ensuring that community engagement processes add value, and comprise best practice and good governance. Moreover, engagement methods need to be flexible, inclusive and appropriate to those being engaged.

When the Council engages with community it should consider all groups, even though it may be difficult to reach every diverse community group, and some groups will choose not to engage. The Council should also have proper regard to the reasonable expectations of the community, to the costs and benefits of the engagement process, and to intergenerational equity.

The level of community engagement undertaken should always be appropriate to the nature, complexity and impact of the issue, plan, project, or strategy. Adequate time and reasonable opportunity should be provided for people to present their views to Council in an appropriate manner and format.

Processes need to be used to help assist people participate in engagement where otherwise they may have limited accessibility to Council. A summary of community responses should always be made available for the public to review and respond.

A local Council that consistently engages effectively with its community is helping to safeguard local democracy while placing people at the centre of local government.
