AN EXHIBITION OF NEW WORKS BY THREE LOCAL ARTISTS WILL OPEN AT GALLERY 126 ON FRIDAY 12TH MAY.

E

mily Simson has exhibited throughout the New England region and first showed at Gallery 126 in 2016. For Janet Reid and Pam Robison, it is their maiden exhibition, and we are excited to introduce their work to Armidale. All three are inspired by the landscape and interpret it on to canvas and paper in their own way.

Emily describes her work practice …

“In the series of artworks for this exhibition, I am putting on to paper glimpses of the landscape between Bendemeer and Uralla, seen while travelling through it as a passenger in a car. The sunlight creates strong lines and colours as its hits tree trunks and grasses, especially towards the end of the day, while the sun is low.

“I enjoy using paint and printmaking methods and move between these to discover different effects for the same subject, the landscape. This time I have used monotypes and mixed media on paper.

“Monotypes are a form of printmaking which creates a unique print, a ‘one off’. With printmaking materials and tools, the monotype uses a printing plate that has no permanent features, which means multiple identical prints cannot be made. First used by artists in the 17th Century with copper plates and many renowned artists since, the following text describes my experience of using monotypes quite well.”

“The technique of monotype is quite varied and its beginnings has not been taught as much as rediscovered and reinvented by each artist who uses it. The artist in turn endows the technique with his or her own style, technique and artistic concerns …”

i Sara. Tell us about your upbringing and what led to your passion for music ...

I grew up on a farm in the Mallee in North West Victoria, with six kids, so I have five siblings.

I had a great childhood. Nan and Pop lived across the road; it really was a luxury having our grandparents so close.

There are a lot of really fun, happy memories; Mum payed piano, Dad played piano accordion, and he used to play in the town country bands when he was younger, before he had kids. He used to play a lot of country music; there was always music playing in our house, from morning 'til night time.

How do you balance your career and family raising four boys?

It’s challenging, and I think sometimes you can use a lot of excuses. Most of the time the excuses are real; some days I can’t even write one email, because there's a fight or someone's got my leg ... I keep coming back to that same email all day - and it just doesn’t happen!

If there's a song happening in my head and I really need to get it down, I will do it in between jobs. If someone wants a bottle or a nappy change, I will go straight back to the song and then wait for them to want something else. I just find a way and manage it!

Although the autumn leaves are starting to fall and we are preparing our gardens for winter, it is important that we look forward to the beautiful springtime and put the St Peters Garden Weekend in our diary. The St Peters Garden Weekend is on again over the weekend of November 4th and 5th, with gardens being open from 10am to 5pm. After all the beautiful rain and growth we have had over summer and autumn, the spring gardens will be magnificent. In 2017, there will be ten gardens open in the Armidale area. We are also planning some art displays and hope to have some musicians to entertain us in some of the gardens over the weekend. As usual we will have the St Peters Parish Centre open, with stalls and morning tea and lunch, and the St Peters Cathedral will be open over the weekend.

Our prices will be the same as last year: Weekend Pass - $40, Single Garden Entry - $5, Daily Bus ticket (a minibus trip which includes the bus fare and garden entry to selected gardens for one day) - $45.

This year is also a special year, as we mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba, and on Saturday the 4th at 12pm there will be a commemorative service in the Cathedral alongside the Hunter River Lancers. We invite all to come and commemorate this significant point in history with members of the Armed Services.

ell us how the Deadly Secrets - Crime Writers weekend came into being?

The idea for the Crime Writers weekend came firstly from the fact that crime novels are a very popular genre in Australia, with a number of very successful Australian authors writing in this field. It is so popular, that Australia has its own crime writing awards, the Ned Kelly Awards, which are awarded each year for both fiction and non fiction crime writing by the Crime Writers’ Association of Australia.

The second reason was that five years ago the New England Writers’ Centre established the New England Thunderbolt Prize for Crime Writing, a competition dedicated to crime short stories. Many entries for this prize have come from the New England area. The centre sought to create an event that would assist aspiring crime writers to gain more knowledge on the art of crime writing from an established writer and to give local crime readers a chance to meet the author. With this in mind, the first Deadly Secrets Crime Writers' Weekend was run last year.

This turned out to be a very successful event and this year we have invited another award winning author to dicuss their work and to run a workshop here in Armidale.

This year we have been fortunate to receive funding from the Regional Arts Fund’s Country Arts Support Program for Deadly Secrets.

Three Armidale artists, Mary Ann Scott, Hilary Pollock and Julia Hardman decided to spend time together in Tuscany, to create an opportunity for inspiration.

T

hey stayed almost a week in Florence during the Italian spring of 2016.

The artists then drove south through the Tuscan countryside to a renovated medieval home in the centre of the tiny stone village of Contignano.

The village is quiet and isolated, away from the tourist trail, while close enough to enjoy the markets of Montepulciano

and Pienza and day trips to Siena and beyond.

The artists lived for three weeks, much like the ninety villagers.

In the early morning, the artists’ partners would walk to the local butcher to buy provisions for the day, including his choice of meats as well as pastries, wonderful Rosetta buns for breakfast and the wine of the day.

The award winning cheese factory next

door provided great provolone.

The artists used the local village, surrounding towns and the World Heritage listed Val d’Orcia countryside to influence their upcoming group exhibition.

Opening night is Friday, May 26th at 6pm in the Chaucer on Bridge Street Gallery, 42 Bridge Street, Uralla. The exhibition will run until Tuesday 13th June 2017

ADFAS Armidale’s May lecture will be held in the TAS Hoskins Centre at 6pm on Thursday 18th May (Michael Hoskins Centre, TAS).

The lecture is a general introduction to the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, known by its inhabitants as Druk Yul or Land of the Thunder Dragon. This is a reference to the Drukpa tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism that permeates every aspect of Bhutanese life. This lecture explores the history, art and culture of this extraordinary country, which for centuries has preserved its traditional Buddhist values. Over the last few decades there have been many changes; such as the introduction of roads, television and tourism.

The topic for the lecture will be: Bhutan the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon and the lecturer is Zara FLEMING (NADFAS).

Zara is an independent art consultant, researcher, cataloguer and exhibition curator with specialist knowledge of Buddhist art. Initially based at the Victoria and Albert Museum, with responsibility for the Tibetan and Nepalese collections, she was then affiliated with the Central

You are invited to take part in a celebration of printing and printmaking at the New England Regional Art Museum on 30th April as part of the inaugural Wimble’s Wayzgoose.

“T

raditionally a wayzgoose was a special event for printers and their families, who took a dinner and an excursion in the country to mark the beginning of the season when they had to work by candlelight,” said Robert Heather, Art Museum Director. “More recently it has become a community celebration around a printing press or workshop where artists, craftspeople, designers, technicians and printers get together with their friends and families.

“We are celebrating the first Wimble’s Wayzgoose here at NERAM from the 28th to 30th April in honour of the collection of

F.T. Wimble, which is down in the Museum of Printing.

“We are putting on a range of fun activities for the wider community to come and discover the treasures we have in the Museum of Printing, which is home to a unique collection of equipment and type,” he said. “These activities will be accompanied by a series of masterclasses, workshops and talks, which will attract leading artists, designers and collectors to Armidale to take part in a weekend of printing mayhem.

“We are inviting the people of New England to come along on Sunday 30th April for a Printer’s Picnic at NERAM, which will include a Mini-Print-Maker’s Market, a

barbecue with craft beers and wines, live music and kids’ activities, as well as artist talks, demonstrations, pop-up exhibitions and an outdoor printing event.

“There are also workshops for all ranges of skills, with leading artists in wood engraving, screenprinting posters and bookbinding.”

The inaugural Wimble’s Waytzgoose event is being supported by the Gordon Darling Foundation and is assisted by the Bacon Factory, Hamilton Wood Type Museum, Black Gully Printmakers and is part of the Print Room series of exhibitions at New England Regional Art Museum.

Chances are, it’d be different, but for more than 500,000 Australians who don’t have birth certificates, this is their reality. Most of them are Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders.

That’s where Pathfinders National Aboriginal Birth Certificate program comes in.

The NABC program provides free birth certificates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged 21 years and younger through email applications and outreach support in identified areas where there are significant numbers of Aboriginal people who don’t have registered births or birth certificates.

The NABC team has travelled through NSW, QLD and VIC, visiting more than 35 Statistical Divisions to conduct birth certificate and registration sign-up days. Volunteers and partnering organisations assist with various tasks on sign-up days, from providing local

transportation to helping applicants fill out forms.

To date, the two-year-old program has assisted more than 5,100 people gain access to their birth certificates. More than 84 percent of these applicants wanted their birth certificates to access education and employment.

Closing the gap on birth registrations and certificates is no cheap feat, but it’s worth is tenfold when you help someone access important services and resources they couldn’t access before.

nd find that now it stops in your court and mine. The Armidale region finds itself at an important point in its history and in what could be underestimated as "challenging times".

It’s a funny-bunny district in lots of ways, acting as though we have a population of 500,000, but not marketing ourselves to show how we stand out, telling our stories so other people take notice. We tend to act as a terrestrial island, busy within our own boundaries to the exclusion of our potential and attracting new citizens to contribute. We can’t look back and want the past - we need to get out there.

The city and the university need each other to function and indeed, to remain viable. And yet I hear that that old elusive Town and Gown image has never been weaker. How fixable!

Firstly, the university needs a proper presence in the centre of the city - Head Tenants in the Old Courthouse would be a big first step.

Events open to the general public would attract townspeople and help "fold in" the concept of a true university city.

UNE’s putting a lot of investment into agriculture and the natural sciences - vital in the new economy. The world must be fed and many city-born people haven’t a clue what goes into filling supermarket shelves - too busy worrying about their mortgages!

There’s been a lot of publicity about future jobs needing a fluid education across disciplines to cope with future needs. It‘s the non-routine jobs that require creativity and are hard to automate. Only one stream in education doesn’t seem to be what will cut it down the track. The new Business Incubator’s recent speaker, Alan Jones, went to Silicon Valley, ended up a Director of Yahoo and now Blue Chilli as well as being a sounding board and potential venture-capitalist for start-ups. People are thinking outside corporate and about more individual small businesses.

Starfish Initiatives, a local sustainability operative, has just launched a foundation, kicked off with a private $500,000 donation.

Lindy Hume, theatre and festival director, has written a Quarterly Essay titled "Restless Giant: changing cultural values in regional Australia".

Lisa Havilah, Director of Carriageworks, the "country’s fastest growing cultural precinct", has a regional background which trained her to make the best of opportunities and not see cultural boundaries.

There are certain moments when I make memories here: the Vietnamese dancing group outside the Town Hall at April’s Carnivale with different groups and heritages joining in and children doing their best to dance down the poles and back to the beginning - it was joyous. Another memory - the Armidale Youth Orchestra under the deodars in gentle misty rain at a fundraiser at Chevy Chase, with the audience holding coloured umbrellas over the young players; and sitting warming around a fire with soup bubbling, yarning while some people made clapsticks at the Community Garden at Narwan Village. Some memories are painful - the Folk Museum’s Great War exhibition, with the terrible waste of war on display reminded us of those we’d lost, like my uncle from Uralla.

Just because our region sits outside the mad, vulnerable hurry in the big cities doesn’t mean we can’t take up challenges and take on the world. We don’t want to live down to our expectations when we don’t need to. Serious ball, our court.

SPORT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN AREA OF EXCELLENCE AT PLC ARMIDALE. NOW IN ITS 130TH YEAR, THE COLLEGE, RECOGNISING GROWTH IN THIS AREA, RECENTLY APPOINTED A DIRECTOR OF SPORT, MR PETER LE SURF.

A

name which has become synonymous with tennis in the region (and further afield), Peter, his wife Fiona, and their two sons, Alistair and Cameron, moved to Armidale in 2011 and established the New England Tennis Academy. With an extensive involvement in sport spanning many years, Peter knows sport.

How have you adjusted to life off the tennis court?

Life off the court has been great, and challenging. While I miss standing outside all day, even in winter, I do love the challenge of establishing something which will have a lasting influence. My new role is very similar to winning a tennis match; you must have a long-term plan. Along the way, you win a few points and lose a few; however, as long as you adjust and adapt to the conditions, you should come out on the winning side. As for coaching, I am still running some programs at NETA, and I do get to spend time on the court.

Why PLC Armidale?

When I considered applying for the position, I went to a variety of sources for information. One of the main messages, that came through loud and clear, was the commitment to providing a professional approach to all aspects of college life.

This sparked a major interest in me. It was not about producing professional athletes; it was about giving all students the opportunity to experience a variety of options. Sport is not compulsory; however, the percentage of girls actively participating is exceptionally high. hen did you first discover you had psychic abilities?

My ability to see spirit was evident from the time I was able to talk. Like a lot of children, I was able to see and communicate with my spiritual friend and blessed with my parents, who encouraged - not criticised - my ability. I was brought up with this being a normal part of life.

The word "psychic" covers a lot of territory ... how would you describe your skills? Are you clairvoyant, clairsentient, or empathic?

The skills I use most would be clairsentience, the ability to feel what has been, is and yet to come.

My clairvoyance is to see things clearly and just “know” things, as well as clairaudience, which is hearing spirit.

I have learnt how not to be too empathic, or I couldn’t do what I do without feeling emotionally drained.

Everyone of us lives our individual journey, which is perfect for our evolution, and at times life can be challenging. But, the fact that things happen mean they are perfect - because they happen. With this outlook, I am able to see how our challenges can lead to our growth, and this is cause for celebration.

I’ve often heard the term "Guides" or "Spirit Guides" mentioned in conjunction with psychic phenomena. Who, or what, are these?

As the name implies, Spirit Guides are beings who

have not incarnated but choose to guide us from the spirit world.

They can be past life connections or spiritual teachers.

Explain the process of giving a reading to someone; is it instant, or can you only do it when you are “in the zone”? Can you do readings for anyone?

Every clairvoyant is unique, so it's a bit hard to speak for all readers, but I believe positive minded readers will empower their clients; however, negative minded readers can scare their clients.

The way I like to read for people is to concentrate on their strengths and work with their Spirit Guides, offering strategies to overcome their challenges. I believe readings should be a beautiful experience, because loving Spirit Guides do not want to frighten us.

I have found if I’m not “in the zone”, I trust and do a reading, and within five minutes I’m “in the zone”.

I believe I can read for anyone, or my Spirit Guides would not bring them to me. How receptive people are can vary. I prefer to read for people who are open, compared to someone who consciously tries to hide everything, because I feel as if I’m being a sticky beak.

I’m not comfortable with that scenario.

What’s the most surprising and also the most rewarding thing about your special gift?

I love seeing the miracle of how spirit heals my clients. Watching people transform from feeling helpless and hopeless to becoming empowered and

hopeful, leaving with clear excitement and feeling in control of their life … this makes my heart sing.

Also, witnessing the power of love from departed loved ones helping grief stricken relatives and friends, often with just the smallest message, is most rewarding.

How has having this gift impacted your own life?

I have learnt to embrace my challenges and not be a victim in circumstances.

Tell us about your expo visiting the area?

My expo comprises a team of gifted clairvoyants and healers wanting to bring their talents and light to communities that miss out on expos. For this reason, we will also be offering psychic development and healing workshops, educating people through free lectures as well. The expo will be held over four days, Thursday 19th - Sunday 21st May. The venue is The Funk Lush Room at the rear of The Top Pub, Uralla.

ell us about HealthWISE and the services it offers In Armidale?

We provide a range of allied health, mental health and Aboriginal health clinical services across the New England North West, New South Wales.

Here in Armidale we have a great team of health professionals. Amanda and Val work in Aboriginal health supporting clients with mental health needs and managing chronic disease. Letecia is one of our primary health care nurses. She organises events across the area, especially in small communities, to promote healthy lifestyle and access to services.

Kate is one of our mental health clinicians, who sees clients here in Armidale, as well as in Walcha. Cate coordinates the memory assessment program to assist in early and accurate diagnosis of dementia. Brent is part of our operations team and is an IT whizz!

I am the Dietitian on the team.

At HealthWISE, we are committed to providing integrated health care, so we work as a team whenever possible.

HealthWISE was established in 2015 to provide primary and preventative health activities specific to the needs of our various communities. How did you end up working in Armidale?

I am an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, and have been working for HealthWISE and living in Armidale since October 2015. Before this, I worked in community Dietetic roles in Innisfail and Cairns and in private practice in Brisbane.

I studied at the University of Queensland and I have a Masters in Dietetic Studies, Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Nutrition.

What do women particularly find challenging when it comes to diet?

Portion size is an area where many women go astray. It is important to manage portions, even when eating really healthy foods. We all tend to go overboard with the portions of red meat.

Most of my clients also don’t eat enough fruit

and vegetables. Of course, snacks and alcohol can also be an area where women are looking to improve.

How can you assist women and their families when it comes to healthy eating, and especially fussy eaters?

There is a lot of good information around healthy eating, but it can also be confusing and advertising can be misleading. I work with clients to develop personalised eating plans or medical nutrition therapy plans to meet their individual needs and goals. I can assess women’s nutrition needs and most importantly, we can sort out nutrition fact from fiction!

For children, especially fussy eaters, I can

assess nutritional status, growth and nutritional requirements of infants, children and adolescents. Eating habits and behaviours during infancy and childhood influence longterm health. If a child refuses to eat entire food groups or textures or becomes upset when offered new foods, then I can certainly help with suggestions and guidance. It takes time, perseverance and patience, and I can support mothers to develop healthy habits for their families.

Who can become a foster carer? And how?

Children and young people who require foster care come from diverse and varied backgrounds, as do foster carers.

We need people who want to make a difference, people who want to create strong outcomes for the future, people who can support someone in being the best person they can be.

Carers may be married, single, gay, straight, own their home or rent, be young or older and be from any cultural background. We are looking for everyday people who are interested in providing all types of care, including overnight, emergency, respite or permanent care. We are also looking for those people who want to adopt, or to provide a permanent home to a child in need.

You will need to be over the age of eighteen years, be an Australian resident and be prepared to have a Working Children’s Check and Australian Federal Police Check. Walker Family Chiropractic Tarryn, tell us about your qualifications as a chiropractor? I knew what I wanted to do with my life from the age of 14. I grew up in Canada, where I used to go to the chiropractor with my mother. I always felt so good after an adjustment and was fascinated to learn how the nervous system controls the body.

After receiving my Health Science degree, I moved to Australia to pursue Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and Masters of Chiropractic degrees at Sydney’s Macquarie University. That’s where I met my husband and business partner, Armidale boy Chris Walker. We have two young children.

Edwards Coaches are celebrating 60 years in business in May. Brad Edwards tells FOCUS readers about this journey and the evolution of this great local company. emind us about when and why Edwards Coaches first began?

In 1957, my parents, Ken and Regina Edwards, along with Ken’s brother, Jim and his wife, Joan, moved to Armidale from Ayr, Nth Qld to purchase the Armidale-Inverell bus service. During the ‘60s, the NSW Government introduced subsidised school bus travel. Ken and Regina won tenders for four school runs. In 1980, my mother and father retired to the Gold Coast, leaving the business to me. I have now had the business for 45 years.

How has the company grown and evolved

over the past 60 years? In 1972 I went into partnership with my father, Ken, at Edwards Coaches and took over Viv and Rita Edwards’ Bus Sersvice in Armidale. This more than doubled the size of Edwards Coaches to a fleet of 14 vehicles.

The vehicles that I took over were a little bit tired, you could say, and it took many long days and nights for myself and my mechanics to get these vehicles up to scratch. The stories from those days are very funny, but it secured a partnership between myself and my staff that has endured a wonderful mateship ever since. Since my father’s retirement in 1980, Edwards Coaches has grown

to a fleet of 44 and over 50 staff. In 2015, my son and right hand man, Markus Edwards, joined Edwards Coaches, the third generation of the Edwards family. I am proud to see him join the family business.

How many buses do you now have, and tell us about the team at Edwards? Edwards Coaches currently has 33 school and town buses as well as nine coaches. In the last year, Edwards has added five new seatbelt equipped school buses, with more coming in the near future. As you can imagine, with such a large fleet the team at Edwards Coaches is very important. All our

drivers are experienced bus drivers, some with over 50 years with Edwards Coaches.

In 1964, Max Cooper started working for Ken and Regina as a casual driver of the Puddledock school run. In 1977, Max became a full-time staff member for Brad, driving the school run mornings and afternoons and doing service work during the day.

This also led to driving coaches on weekday and weekend charter work. Max has very fond memories of those days, “A great place to work, getting paid to see a lot of Australia and great people to work for”.

Max retired in April this year. He will be sadly missed.

Another member of the staff that has been with Edwards Coaches for a long time is Ross Edmonds. Ross started as a driver, then went into the role as mechanic and when the three of us get together, the stories of the old days are very entertaining. James Cross is another staff member who has been with Edwards Coaches for a long time. James started his career with Edwards as a driver and is now the Operations Manager for the company. As he was a driver, he understands that his role has to be the positive influence for the drivers and keeping the wheels turning. Robyn Frost is the company manager; she has been with Edwards Coaches for over 16 years, starting as the receptionist. She is a very valued

employee and copes very well in a male dominated industry. There have been so many staff members, both in the office and in the yard, that I haven’t mentioned but I am so appreciative of each and every one, as these are the people that helped Edwards Coaches reach this great milestone.

Tell us about the services the buses provide?

Edwards Coaches operates local passenger services, school services within the Armidale district, as well as coaches providing charter services, mainly within the eastern states of Australia and the occasional weekend getaways to shows in Sydney and Brisbane. We also service Trainlink for emergency or pre-planned rail trackwork. We are also on standby for Qantaslink when

Both were highly logistical operations, but very rewarding, as we play a small role in helping the Armidale community showcase our great city. We were also pleased to be a sponsor for the 25th Anniversary of the Armidale Autumn Festival and getting the Marking Koalas back to Armidale after 25 years.

Tell us about Edwards Aviation and how this business came about ...

I have been passionate about all things to do with aviation since I was a young boy. I first started flying gliders at Armidale Airport at 11 years of age and then went solo at 15 and had an instructor rating at 16. I obtained my licence to fly powered aeroplanes in the early ‘80s and flew my own aircraft, a Mooney M20, a small single engine aircraft, for a few years. I slowly progressed to bigger and more complex aircraft.

Around 2000 I obtained my commercial pilot’s licence. In 2003, I purchased a Cessna Citation Jet; I then started Edwards Aviation, offering aircraft charter to Armidale residents and clients around Australia. I now operate three Citation Jets and three twin-engine aircraft to all parts of Australia and overseas and employee three full-

time pilots and three casual pilots.

ell us about your background?

I spent a dozen years with Greenpeace, and I’m a current Director of Lock the Gate. At KPMG, my specialisation was tax and SMEs. I was also CEO of Australia’s peak child abuse prevention society.

My time in finance, law and management; environmental; and the children and family sectors led me to an interest in sustainability.

Starfish grew out of this, as I came to realise that sustainability is about getting the natural, social and economics right at the same time.

My focus, and that of Starfish, is on how we can achieve this.

What brought you to Armidale?

We did five years of research deciding where to live. We were looking across Australia, New Zealand and Europe, seeking a great quality of life. It needed a professional economy - which was key to my own livelihood - and we wanted an area that was resilient to the likely challenges coming our way, such as the economic disruption, climate change, mass extinctions, and pressure on food production. The business had outgrown our previous premises and we had been looking for a move to suitable location. Elders’ location became available, which fulfils all our needs.

The fluid power industry is largely unregulated.

Bernie, the business owner, has became involved in the re-establishment of the NSW Fluid Power Society. ow did Kelly’s Transport begin?

Seventy odd years ago, the only way to get sheep and cattle to the sale was to walk them from your property along the designated stock routes around the district. Even for the locals of Armidale, this was often a three day trip - slow going and hard work. That was until two brothers, Edgar and Sam Kelly, saw the need for farmers to be able to move their stock quickly and more efficiently.

The Kelly brothers had heard of people carting stock by truck down south and out west but as yet, no one within the New England region had attempted to do this. Foreseeing that need, Edgar and Sam built a stock float. With a “she’ll be right” attitude and with the trust given to a man of his word, the Teege family from Puddledock gave them their first load of cattle.

After arriving at the saleyards, they had to jump the cattle off the back of the truck, as there weren’t any unloading ramps at that time!

From that day in 1948, through sheer hard work and determination, the company, Kelly Brothers’ Transport was born. This was the

foundation that provided a basis for the thriving and somewhat iconic business it is today.

The Kelly brothers were also the first Shell agents who ran the depot in Niagara Street.

After working together for many years, Edgar and Sam decided to separate the two businesses.

Edgar continued with the transport company, while Sam took over the Shell depot.

Sadly in May 1978, Edgar was killed in a trucking accident. This was a tragedy for his family, which included his wife, Margaret, and children Sharron, Brian, Michael, Maureen, Christopher and Timothy. Edgar’s sons, Brian, Mick, Chris and Tim, with the support of their mother Margaret, continued to operate the business. They all worked incredibly hard to develop Kelly’s Transport into the well-respected transport company it is today.

How has the company grown and evolved over the past 70 years?

Kelly’s Transport has seen the livestock transport industry grow and change dramatically over the last 70 years. Their family business has transformed from those humble beginnings at the old depot in Taylor Street, to where it proudly stands today at the new depot located on

The Taylor Street shed was conveniently located close to the St Kilda Hotel, and if you couldn’t find some of the drivers at work, they would generally be there! To the point, that at one stage Edgar wanted to buy shares in the pub!

Moving the depot was indeed a huge feat and would certainly be a challenge for any family with such a strong history and just a few bits and bobs between them. The current shed was locally built by TechSpan, and the concrete was supplied by Ducats.

The Kelly brothers seem to have found enough space to make their own mark at Bundarra Road.

The new shed is large enough to drive all eight of their prime movers through it.

Most importantly, they have provided a place for their family, which includes a combined 13 children and so far five grandchildren, to spend time kicking about and learning about trucks like they did at their own Dad’s depot so many years before.

Reliability has also been a big factor that has changed in everyday business.

In the old days if you broke down and you couldn’t fix the problem, you would have to park up and wait. Now trucks seem to go forever. If a breakdown does occur, it’s possible to get the assistance of a mechanic 24/7. Mobile phones have also played a big part in the company’s growth.

Now you can be standing in the middle of a paddock, give someone a call and organise stock to be shifted there and then.

The prime movers have gotten bigger and the trailers have gotten longer. Roads are much better and the ability to transport stock in a safe, less stressful way has improved. In the early days 50 - 100 sheep on a trailer was considered a miracle; now, they have the ability to regularly carry 650 sheep on a b-double. The same goes for cattle, 5 - 10 head of cattle transported to the sale was fantastic; now, 70 steers taken to a feedlot is the norm.

How have the trucks and trailers changed over the years?

Trucks have changed a lot over the years.

They are much safer and more comfortable.

The first trucks didn’t have electronic indicators; these were metal hands operated manually on the side of the truck. Braking systems have improved dramatically. Greater distances were necessary to stop … if the brakes actually worked! In the early days you had to put a board between the seats to try and make your own bed; whereas now, you have a full king single bed permanently in the sleeper cab behind the seats.

Fuel tanks used to be located under the driver’s seat and hold 16 gallons of fuel; now, they can hold anywhere up to 1,800 litres, which makes travelling long distances a lot

easier. Edgar and Sam used to build a frame across the chassis to hang two 44 gallon drums filled with fuel either side of the truck, which if you tried to do so now would be highly illegal.

You could get away with a lot more back then!

The trucks used to have around 120 horse power, and now they have up to 620 horse power. Load restraints have come a long way, with the invention of ratchet straps making loads a lot safer. Small things have also made a big difference, like having fridges in the trucks, two way radios and CD players.

In the mid 1960s, Edgar bought some three decker sheep crates made in Tamworth, which were some of the first triple deck sheep crates in the New England. Then in the late 1960s, he bought two second hand double decker cattle crates. The boys decided to have a crack

Kelly’s Transport now runs eight prime movers and around 20 trailers. This includes five Western Stars and three Kenworths, four sets of convertible floats (capable of carting both sheep and cattle), four sets of dedicated cattle floats and two wool trailers. They

also have a couple of tabletops that are used to carry wool into town.

Tell us about the very important team at Kelly’s Transport.

The team here at Kelly’s consists of the four brothers, who are all partners: Brian, Mick, Chris and Tim. The boys, to their credit, are all still driving, loading and unloading sheep and cattle every day of the week. Greg “Jake” McRae has also been with them a long time. Jake has a history behind him similar to the boys, thus making him an honorary Kelly. Jonathan and Daniel are the third generation of Kelly’s livestock carriers and have introduced a bit of fresh blood into the business to keep the boys on their toes!

They have also had many drivers that have worked on and off over the years.

Barry Marshall, Graham Tombs and Paul and Matthew Shiels are always willing to give them a hand when needed.

A special mention must also go to their four legged friends, the working dogs who are an integral part of the business and will help load and unload the stock rain, hail or shine. Most arguments between the boys have been over who’s got the best sheepdogs!

A huge thank you must also go to the wives and families of everyone involved. It can be a pretty tough gig at times and without their care and support, the boys wouldn’t be able to do what they do!

How far and wide do you travel with the trucks, and how many head of livestock

do you move a year?

The trucks travel all over the place. The Kelly slogan is “going wherever you see them, seeing them wherever you go” which definitely rings true. On any given day, you can find Kelly’s trucks scattered over New South Wales and Queensland. Michael has taken sheep all the way to Kangaroo Island in South Australia, and Tim and Tony Philp have taken sheep as far as Perth.

It’s a bit hard to gauge exactly how much stock is shifted over a year, but we can roughly transport 2,500 - 3,000 sheep per day and up to 1,000 cattle per day. Many bales of wool are also carted to Newcastle throughout the year.

What is the best and worst part about being in the industry?

The best part of being a part of the livestock

transport industry would be carting livestock for all of our wonderful clients, many of whom have been using our company since it began in 1948. You get a great sense of satisfaction that you have done a great job at the end of the day through the provision of a quality service that has been around for many years.

The worst part of the industry would be the rising costs of trucks, registration and fuel.

What is the most rewarding thing about being part of such a successful, respected and long serving business?

The most rewarding part of working for Kelly’s Transport is knowing that you are part of such a long standing, proud legacy that was built on the back of hard work and strong family values. At the end of the day, family is the most important part of our business. For all

of us to work together and support each other in the way that we do makes us very lucky.

Plans for the future?

Our plans for the future involve doing what we are doing and continuing to work together to provide Armidale with a quality service that is reliable, safe and efficient.

uying an existing small business can often be more advantageous than starting a business from scratch. It is more than likely the groundwork has already been done. This can include: the goodwill of an existing business; an existing market; an established loyal client base; sustainable cash flow; established relationships with suppliers and distributors; taking on existing skilled staff with structured rosters; existing plant and equipment; and, financial arrangements already in place such as leases and mortgages.

There can also be many hidden dangers when buying a small business. It is paramount that any perspective purchaser knows how to best protect themselves and their new venture from failure and financial ruin. Some common mistakes are: failure to carry out proper due diligence; not considering GST, Capital Gains Tax or stamp duty implications; not planning ahead by developing appropriate marketing, business and succession plans; failing to ensure sufficient funds are accessible; not putting in place proper restraint of trade / non-compete provisions binding on the vendor; and, not having other proper income and asset protections.

Before purchasing a small business, it is critical that you seek advice from your solicitor and accountant or financial planner to evaluate the risks involved and understand exactly what you are paying for. Are you purchasing the shares of a company, the assets or both? Are you buying the business name and intellectual property such as trademarks, patents and copyrights? Does the business have any outstanding debts or existing claims to which you may be liable? What are your legal requirements and obligations under Australian and NSW law? These are some of the types of questions you will need to carefully

consider.

As part of the due diligence process, all aspects of a business should be comprehensively considered and reviewed. Balance sheets, financial statements, supply or purchase agreements, policies, contracts, subcontracts, leases, licences, supplier and distribution agreements, partnership agreements, itineraries and depreciation schedules are just some of a business’s operations that should be investigated.

You may need to obtain your own independent valuation and make sure all plant and equipment is in good working order before you commit to a sale. It is also recommended that you ensure that any vehicles are licenced and check if there are any security interests registered over any assets on the Personal Property and Security Register (PPSR).

Most importantly, put your agreement in writing! Sadly, some people neglect this requirement and commit large amounts of money before entering into or finalising a written contract for the sale of business. Often pre-contractual negotiations between parties can be misinterpreted due to language or cultural barriers. Verbal arrangements can suddenly be retracted or changed by a party due to unforeseen events and circumstances. As well as being left embarrassed, this can lead to a dispute between parties and ultimately litigation.

A written contract or agreement will offer better protection and clarity as to what is being purchased and should provide the warranties and remedies in the event a dispute arises.
