hen did music become a part of your life, and what was the first instrument you picked up?

I have always played music for as long as I can remember. There were lots of instruments in the house when I was a kid, and I experimented with all of them - guitar, piano, trumpet, organ. The guitar was the instrument I fell in love with though.

Tell us about Tubular Bells for Two; where did it all begin?

Tubular Bells for Two is a live performance where two blokes frantically play over 20 instruments to recreate Mike Oldfield's classic album, Tubular Bells. But it doesn't matter if you've never even heard of the album before; this show is for anyone who enjoys live music

main theme. There's: grand piano, reed and pipe organ, glockenspiel, bass guitar ... And it goes until it gets to tubular bells! So we thought, wouldn't it be fun to have all of these instruments set up around a stage, announce them, then run around and play them. And it was at that moment the show was really born.

It then became a challenge; can we play the entire album as it is sounds on the record? We then had to score the whole album and then choreograph the performance, right down to the movement of our toes, just to achieve it.

You’re both multi instrumentalists ‌ What are some of the more unusual instruments played in the show, and how are they all juggled between the two of you?

I suppose the bells themselves are unusual, as they're hard to come by. When we first did the show, we couldn't afford to even hire a set, as they're quite expensive. So we had a carpenter friend build us a set out of fence pipe off cuts. They were pretty ugly looking, and they sounded pretty awful too. They had their demise live on national radio on the ABC, when we played them, and they literally fell to bits.

What can the audience expect from your show?

A tense, edge of your seat experience. If you don't know the album, you'll be taken on a sonic journey that goes through so many different styles of music, from Rock to Folk to Celtic to Jazz ... There's just so much in it.

If you do know the album, it's probably even more tense, because you know what's coming up and you'll be wondering, how on Earth are they going to do it?

The show is intense; how do you prepare, and what happens if a finger or toe slips?

No matter what, we must get to the end.

That's the whole idea. If something goes wrong, we have to figure out how to keep going. We've had some catastrophic moments performing this show, we've had instruments fall and break, we've fallen over, cables have come unplug, we even lost power to the entire stage once, but we still kept going with whatever we had around us that worked.

That's the show - two blokes play the whole album, all the way through, without stopping, no matter happens.

Today’s interview will focus on one of these businesses, WorkHealth Australia.

Can you tell us about your background?

I grew up in Sydney and trained as a physiotherapist at UNSW and Sydney Uni. I worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, London, for five years and then Katherine for eleven years.

I moved here in 2005 and worked at the hospital, UNE and here. I currently teach first and second year medical students at the university.

What brought you to Armidale?

Katherine was pretty isolated and my children were reaching high school age, and I wanted them to have broader experiences that a remote location wasn’t able to offer. Armidale has proven to be the perfect springboard for us all.

As an already successful business, what has driven you to expand year on year and start a complementary business?

We are living longer, and we are being asked to work longer. There is such a need for people to understand and manage their own health at home and in the workforce. It’s absolutely critical we keep the health dollar down and of course, maintain a quality of life for the individual. Both businesses are focused on helping people stay healthy as they age and in

What was the most challenging part of the application process?

What would you advise a business just starting out?

Be passionate, and there is no perfect time.

If you have a great idea, do something about it.

How do you run two demanding businesses?

You have to have excellent staff, good systems in place, and really good communication is critical. I think it is important to recognise the skills you have and bring in the skills you need, whether it is through hiring the right staff or outsourcing to external providers. I currently, and very successfully, outsource my Human Resources, Marketing and IT functions.

You need to free yourself up to focus on your core business.

What are the biggest challenges that lie ahead?

Managing two growing businesses, a significant increase in staff, and putting in the systems and processes that will support the businesses’ continued growth.

RUSDEN STREET PHYSIOTHERAPY After winning the New England North West Business Chamber Award for Best Small Business and Overall Best Business on the night, and then going on to represent Armidale at the State Awards, Rusden Street Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation is going from strength to strength.

usden Street Physio (RSP) has moved only a few doors up, but to much larger premises, allowing it to accommodate its newly expanded services and its growing staff of experienced treatment practitioners. You can now find them at 210A Rusden Street, next door to Douglas Pathology, and directly opposite Rusden Street Medical Practice.

Not only can RSP boast of spanking new premises, five new treating practitioner staff have commenced since the start of 2017 and have introduced a whole new range of services, with the addition of an occupational therapist and remedial massage therapist to its team.

New physiotherapy recruit, Drew Chalker, has a great passion for sports physiotherapy, injury prevention and manual therapy techniques in the sports environment. He also has a great interest in neurological and aged care rehabilitation. Fellow, physiotherapist Liam

McAuliffe is a published author in the field of neurological rehabilitation and is passionate about sports injury rehabilitation.

Representing an expansion of allied health services, Michelle Hobbs, Occupational Therapist, works with clients to optimise their function and allow them to live their lives as independently as possible. And Sam Lord, Remedial Massage Therapist, tailors each treatment to suit individual clients' musculoskeletal needs, while assisting fellow RSP allied health professionals achieve their treatment goals.

Principal Deborah Hunter says, “My biggest struggle in recent times has been the ability to keep up with patient demand. Now, with the appointment of three new physiotherapist practitioners, the introduction of Saturday

appointments we hope we have solved that problem.”

Arcadia Winds, five of Australia’s hot-shot musicians, will come to Armidale on Thursday 4 May to perform in the Thursdays@7pm Concert Series presented by the New England Conservatorium (NECOM) and Musica Viva Armidale.

A

rcadia Winds is one of Australia’s newest wind ensembles comprised of Kiran Phatak (flute), David Reichelt (oboe), Lloyd Van’t Hoff (clarinet), Matthew Kneale (bassoon) and Rachel Shaw (French horn). Their list of achievements reads like the A-list of gold medallists in the Australian music world and includes Symphony Australia’s Young Performer of the Year Awards in 2013 and 2015, Directors Prize at the Australian National Academy of Music and 1st Prize at the Australia International Flute Competition.

NECOM recently caught up with Lloyd Van’t Hoff, Arcadia Winds’ clarinettist and winner of the 2015 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Award, to talk about the ensemble’s upcoming visit to Armidale.

Arcadia Winds – how did you decide on your name?

It comes from a quote by English flautist Emily Beynon who said: “You can take the flute out of Arcadia but you can’t take Arcadia out of the flute”. It has several ties back to Greek mythology. Arcadia refers to a vision of pastoralism and harmony with nature but is also the home of the Greek God Pan, who was synonymous with music and the flute.

How and when did the five of you get together as an ensemble?

Many of us studied together from 2008-2011 at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and we officially formed as an ensemble in 2013 at the Australian National Academy of Music.

What can the audience expect to hear at your concert?

A wide range of music with differing styles and genres, music that’s both old and very new, from all parts of the globe! Central to the program are works by two Australian composers Lachlan Skipworth and Natalie Williams which were both written for us.

You play Debussy, Ligeti, Nielsen and two Australian works - how did you choose the repertoire?

It’s a case of trying to find the balance between music we love, and music that we feel audiences need to hear. In an ideal situation, the music ends up being both of those things, and luckily for us this time that is definitely the case.

Do you have a favourite work or composer from this program?

I tend to liken that question to asking whether one has a favourite child! There are many different things we like about each of the pieces, and we try to string those things together to take the audience on a journey through the concert. Highlights for us are the two Australian works which are central to the program. We were fortunate enough to work with Lachlan Skipworth and Natalie Williams on their pieces so they were developed mutually.

We are extremely proud of this and were also able to form close relationships with both the composers. Because of this fact, these pieces have a particular soft spot in our hearts.

As a musician, what skills do you need to play in an ensemble?

You need to have great interpersonal skills.

We spend a lot of time communicating different ideas and working things out verbally in rehearsals and to do that effectively it takes a great understanding of each other as people.

The next one is not so much a skill but rather something fundamentally pertinent: we each need to have mutual respect for one another.

Without mutual respect, rehearsals, concerts and the business side of things can all suffer if that trust isn’t there for everyone.

What’s good about being in an ensemble?

I personally love the camaraderie. I do a number of other musical things in my life -

Lloyd Van’t Hoff Arcadia Winds Clarinettist solo engagements, orchestra, teaching - but I always love coming back to chamber music. It’s like a musical reset button for me. There’s something so special about being able to share the stage with your friends and colleagues, and being able to create something that’s entirely unique for your audience.

What advice would you give to Armidale’s young musicians just starting out?

What I love most about being a musician is that my instrument can be a voice for many weird and wonderful things. And I truly love not knowing where it will take me, which makes the journey all that much more fun. So for young musicians starting out, just make sure that your instrument becomes a voice for your ideas. Love what you do and always have fun doing so, because if you’re not, then what’s the point?

What else is in store for Acadia Winds this year?

We are just about to record an EP(!), there’s an international tour of China, a collaboration with indie singer/songwriter Bertie Blackman, and being involved in Musica Viva In Schools in metropolitan and regional schools reaching up to 15,000 students a year.

‘Animalia’ was inspired by the Australian National Gallery’s The Popular Pet Show exhibition that features portraits of famous Australians and their pets by contemporary artists including Lucy Culliton’s ‘Self with Friends’.

‘Animalia’ has four movements composed in response to four arts works by artists Kristin Headlam and the Culliton sisters Lucy and Anna.

The music describes the poignancy of parting with one’s companion pet in the morning, the “wayward waltz” that you see in dogs around dinner-time, five sheep characters portrayed by Lucy Culliton matching the five sheepish faces of the quintet players, and the athleticism of a circus dog!

Arcadia Winds share the belief that, as wind musicians instinctively breathe together and are capable of creating an enormous variety of sound worlds, the wind quintet is an outstanding chamber medium that can rival the very best string quartets. The Armidale Dog Training Club is holding their April Agility and Jumping Trials on the 22nd and 23rd April.

gility is a fast and exciting dog sport, where handler and dog teams negotiate courses containing a series of obstacles. Accuracy and speed are the ultimate aim, but first and foremost agility is fun for the dogs, handlers and spectators. Agility attracts competitors of all ages, and dogs of most breeds and crossbreeds are represented.

The Armidale trials are a popular event on the Northern NSW calendar and attract some of the best dog and handler teams from across NSW and Southern QLD to compete. The weekend

includes a regional qualifying heat, one of 12 held throughout NSW, where competitors attempt to finish in the top 40 and earn a place in the finals held in September each year.

The two day event is held at Charleston Willows, 5 km north of Armidale along Rockvale Road.

Competition kicks off at 8am both days, and spectators are very welcome. Entry is free.

Discover the sheep-filled landscape paintings of Lucy Vader at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in the new exhibition Serenades to the Sky.

A

rtist Lucy Vader comes from a family who have been farmers for generations and continuously finds inspiration in the life on the land. These days she roams between Sydney, the Hunter Valley, the Northern Rivers and the Moree region, and her large scale paintings tell a story of the land and its animal occupants.

Stand close to one of Vader’s works, and her brushstrokes draw you into a richly textured world of deep colours - green, yellow, red and blue. Move away from the canvas and wide, grassy paddocks emerge, frequently populated by sheep golden and camouflaged against parched yellow land, or with bright white fleeces that contrast with rain-restored grass.

In this new exhibition at NERAM she explores a world of wide, grassy paddocks, frequently populated by sheep using a technique where thick, sumptuous layers of paint blur the distinction between abstraction and representation.

“This will be Lucy’s first exhibition here in Armidale, and we are looking forward to seeing her works on the walls here,” said Robert Heather, Art Museum Director. “We are presenting this show in partnership with Michael Reid Gallery in Murrurrundi and think that it will be a great opportunity for our community to see her paintings and for local artists to create with her in a workshop.”

Lucy Vader was born in the far northern part of New South Wales, beginning

her life in the fertile surrounds of Goonengerry, high in the hinterland behind Mullumbimby, and now resides in Sydney. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art, Painting, from the National Art School, as well a Bachelor of Interior Architecture.

Vader was selected as a finalist in the Sulman Prize 2011, AGNSW and was recently a finalist in the prestigious 2017 Muswellbrook Art Prize. She has also produced and exhibited for some years in sculpture, and has exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea. Serenades to the Sky is on show at NERAM until Sunday 30th April 2017. It is presented in partnership with Michael Reid Gallery, Murrurundi.

DALE + DANNII. GOODWIN Dale and Dannii Goodwin from Dales Downtown Meats and Smallgoods in Uralla had a vision twelve years ago to open a small business. They could never have imagined the busy life they have today as a young family … but are enjoying every minute.

here are you from, and tell us about your family? I am a born and bred Uralla boy; I did my short schooling career in Uralla. After leaving school 17 years ago, I completed my butchering apprenticeship with the Jackson family.

Dannii is an Armidale girl. After completing her schooling in Armidale, she moved on to do an apprenticeship as a beauty therapist. Soon after this, she was swept off her feet and saved by a Uralla gentleman! Not long after this we started our business, “Dales Downtown Meats”, then we completed the picture with our two little champion boys, Cooper and Nash!

You have owned the famous Dales Downtown Meats for a few years now and have also taken on three other business. Tell us about each business and the products and services you offer? We are now in our 12th year of business in our butcher shop in Uralla.

As a small business in a very small town, it has certainly had its ups and downs, but we have enjoyed every minute.

However, as everybody is aware, in the past two years meat prices have gone to a 40 year high and passing on the cost wasn’t an option for us, so we expanded our business into different avenues to handle the ever evolving world of meat!

With a lot of hard work and determination, we are now producing over half the lambs for our butcher shop and we hope in the near future to be 100% sustainable.

How do you juggle life and business with a young family?

Well, that’s a frequently asked question at our dinner table most nights!

But with the help of both Nan and Pop’s babysitting services and a very smart bookkeeping lady (thanks Mum) we do seem to get through, but I would really like to thank my wife, because it is beyond me how she has the ability to get two very spritely boys up, ready to go by 6:30am (when she doesn’t sleep in)

My name is Pearce Eggert.

I am 23 years old, and I am the owner/director of Bang For Ya Buck Armidale. We offer a range of services, including carpet steam cleaning, pest control and water restoration to the Armidale and New England community.

After having been out of school for two years and working in retail, I decided to start my own small business in 2011. Since establishment, Bang For Ya Buck has become a successful and well known local business that I pride myself on.

When I started, I offered lawn mowing and carpet steam cleaning services; however, fortunately within the past three years my business has boomed.

At the start of last year I was able to hire my twin sister, Elly, to conduct all administration duties, which allowed me to be out in the field full-time. As well as this, we have just purchased our fourth work vehicle and now lease our own commercial shed and office space.

Why did you choose Elly for the job?

Elly completed her Bachelor of Business Management Degree in 2015 with a scholarship for the Golden Key International Honour Society, which placed her in the top 15% of students in her degree based on academic achievement. We had never planned to be in business together, and I’m sure she never imagined working with me. However, I had a position for a full-time receptionist come available, as I could not keep up with the work - and she happily accepted.

What do you love most about owning your own business?

I love the interaction with the people, where they are from, where do they work and what they do. I love that I have had the opportunity to serve fresh food daily to the people of the New England.

Where do you get your inspiration? I’ve always been passionate about food, food prep, new recipes and cooking for people whom enjoy the food that I make.

How many people do you employ? Currently, I have five parttime staff, many of them studying but equally passionate and dedicated about providing an excellent service and food.

Plans for the future? Ideally, I would like to expand on catering and events, and possibly home delivery is also an idea.

What inspired you to pursue your dreams of becoming a business owner? It was always a dream to have my own salon and set up an environment that portrayed who I am as a person.

I love a more natural and sustainable setting, which we are slowly working towards. As I have only owned Reflections Hair Studio on my own for two years, it has taken while to set the direction of where I’d like the salon to be.

Describe the services you offer ... We offer a full range of hairdressing services, from cutting, colouring, perming, upstyling for weddings and formals. Also being a passionate colourist/colour technician, we can offer the highest quality results with our colour work; we work in with the client to get the results they desire.

What do you love most about owning your own business? I can be flexible, working in with my clients’ needs and not having the pressure of rushing them out the door. Also, taking the time to get to know them and building great relationships.

How many people do you employ, and tell us about them.

We have a second year apprentice, Hannah, who is amazingly talented. Hannah is so gifted, she picks things up incredibly well and she is a key member of our team! We also have Emma, who works on Saturdays. She is English trained and has a true passion for hairdressing!

Plans for the future? To continue to provide an excellent professional experience for our clients. We regularly attend professional development training in order to keep up to date with the latest trends, fashions and techniques.

What services do you offer? As licensed and insured plumbers, drainers and gas fitters, we can provide the full suite of services, including new water lines or repairing a leaky toilet or tap, new sewer or storm water drains, guttering, and connection of gas pipework, appliances or regulators. In addition to work on new houses or renovations, we also provide a full maintenance service, handling blocked drains, hot water tanks and much more, right up to large commercial maintenance schedules.

What inspired you to pursue your dreams of becoming a business owner? Lifestyle choices and family.

To what do you most attribute your success? We have a great employee base, each with their different strengths and own ideas on how to approach things, which is invaluable in a trade business. We currently have three tradespersons, two apprentices and an office manager, all given a degree of responsibility within the business. This helps them to enjoy their work and ensures they know that they are an important part of our workforce, which in turns helps our business to be successful.

What advice would you give to young people who want to become business owners? Work on forming a strong but flexible business plan, with a clear picture of what style or size of business you want to run and what you personally want to achieve from owning your own business, then, ask for advice, listen, and get on with it!

JOSH PEARSON. UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

Josh Pearson is a born and bred Armidale boy. At 21, he is in his third year of study at the University of Canberra - and now FOCUS and our community have the opportunity to kick start what could well be the beginnings of a high flying international career. With his sights set on a career in

international relations, Josh’s career goals were not always so clear. Having always enjoyed playing sport, especially tennis and rugby, he was first focused on a career in the sports industry.

T

ell us about your academic studies? After completing the HSC at TAS, I went to work as a GAP Tutor in England, in the Midlands, at a primary boarding school. Currently I am studying Politics, International Relations and Business at the University of Canberra.

I recently completed a semester-long exchange at George Mason University, just outside Washington DC. How did that go? It was genuinely eye opening. I got to experience a new culture and meet a lot of new and interesting people, all while progressing my studies.

What is the project you are talking to us about today? In early January, I received an invitation to attend an International Relations and Diplomacy Delegation to China. Only a very small group of students around the world are invited, based on their academic performance and recommendation.

How did that make you feel? To tell the truth, I wasn’t a high achiever at school, but I have worked very hard at university and am humbled to have this opportunity to represent my country and my hometown.

How many people were invited to participate? Thirty - fifty students are selected, including five Australians. It is a real privilege to be selected as one of a few Australian students from 40 Australian universities.

What exactly does an International Relations and Diplomacy delegate do? That is a good question. At the beginning of the program we will be allocated to teams, given case study topics and tasked with designing a presentation to be given to students and staff at the conclusion of the program. It’s a competitive process, so throughout the program, we take notes and keep a running journal.

Why is understanding Chinese relations important? Approximately half of all Aussie exports go to China. Our relationship with China therefore needs to be strong - not just from an economic standpoint, but a social one. Australia is still quite new to the scene and has a lot of ground to gain.

How will you benefit personally? I would like to pursue a diplomatic career or one in

campaign you are running? The delegation isn’t free, but is an opportunity I just do not want to miss out on. We’re encouraged to raise awareness of the opportunity amongst our communities and country and to seek support for our participation. I have started a GoFundMe Campaign and, so far, raised 50% of my $5,500 goal. Funds raised will fund the majority of the program costs and travel.

The campaign has reached over 1,000 people, and I have been generously supported by local friends and family, as well as receiving anonymous donations. While some have donated in the hundreds, the typical donation has been a lot smaller, with people giving $10 and $20.

Every little bit counts, and I have been blown away by everyone’s generosity.

We offer a wider range of treatments and state of the art technology, so that patients don’t have to travel to the big cities for treatment. This includes 3D diagnostic imaging, same day ceramic fillings and emergency appointments, specialist root canal therapy, and implant dentistry.

For our most nervous patients we have a range of sedative therapies, including “happy gas” and IV sedation. We also offer injectable and rejuvenating treatments for the lips and face and a full range of orthodontic treatments in house for all ages, and are now open longer hours, six days a week.

What inspired you to pursue your dreams of owning your own dental practice? It is well known within the dental profession that there is a saturation of dentists in the big city, an unmet demand for dental services in more rural communities, and big corporates who are beginning to govern the industry and dictate the types and costs of treatment provided. We don’t think that it’s fair that people who live

outside of the big cities don’t have access to the same treatment or services, and we certainly don’t want big corporate companies limiting the autonomy in our profession to provide the best and most suitable treatment for each patient.

We genuinely care about each and every patient and want to bring fresh faces to Armidale, with dentists and staff who are highly trained with attention to detail, a passion for their work, and outstanding people skills, coupled with leading technologies that will ensure all services in the big cities are available here also.

We feel that this, and the genuine love for our work and care for our patients is what creates success, rather than being something quantifiable by numbers.

What advice would you give to young people who want to become business owners? That it’s OK to dream! Have a plan, and do what it takes to get there, making yourself accountable for achieving each mini goal along the way and identifying areas for improvement. It is important to focus on the big picture. We love the saying: “Let the difference between where you are and where you want to be inspire you”. There are inevitable hurdles and not everything is a walk in the park, but that is why it’s so important to stay focused and have an amazing support network, to know your limitations, ask for help, seek advice, find a mentor, and most importantly always maintain a good work/life balance for your health and sanity!

Armidale High School

Armidale High is a multicultural school with several Nepalese students, and when the earthquake struck, news of the devastation was keenly felt in the school community. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused widespread damage to buildings, roads, infrastructure and significant world heritage sites such as temples and stupas, as well as many lives being lost.

A

HS and the Armidale Nepalese Community headed by Mr Keshav Timalsena began working to raise money to help; the focus became to rebuild a school in an affected area, because education is a key foundation for a community to be able to rebuild itself.

Tell us about the connection AHS has with Nepal …

Nepalese senior student at AHS, Riya Thapa, and her family have connections with people who were able to identify a school in Nepal that was in need of help. The importance of this connection is that all money raised will be sent directly and securely for the immediate purpose of the reconstruction project.

Riya’s father, Rajesh Thapa, is a leader in the Armidale Nepalese Community and has been a driving force in this project. Raj became aware of a primary school near Nuwakot, a few hours north-west of Kathmandu, which is very remote and was severely affected. The school is central to the village community and as such, was ideal for the AHS Nepal Project.

Who has visited the project?

In December 2016, the Thapa family travelled home to Nepal for an eight week holiday, the first visit since coming to Australia six years ago. Georgie Cooper, AHS School Captain and friends with Riya since Year 7, was fortunate to join them in January. Japanese teacher at AHS, Mrs Debbie Moore, was able to divert her family holiday in Japan to also join the group, and together they all travelled to Nuwakot.

They were joined on the long four hour drive from Kathmandu by several key people keen to be involved in the mission, including a representative of the Ministry of Education Government of Nepal, head teacher Mr Narayan Prashad, Nepal Educational Development NGOs representative Mr Binod Das Gurung, Armidale Nepalese Community representative Mr KB Shrestha, and the engineer, Mr Santosh Thapa.

Upon arrival, they were greeted warmly by students, staff, parents and others at the school site, which had been visibly devastated by the earthquake: a whole building, which comprised about half of their school, had been destroyed; a makeshift shelter was being used, as well as the surviving original building. Plastic and woven walls were all the students had to keep out the harsh weather conditions, with plastic sheets on the floor to sit and learn on.

The Armidale High group were overwhelmed by how little the Nepalese village had and how much we take our own situation for granted.

How did the MOU come about?

In a formal meeting between the Armidale representatives, the Kathmandu projectmanagement team and people from the school and village, the rebuild situation was discussed and how AHS wanted to contribute. In the past people had come to visit the village, taken photos and promised to help, then never been in contact with the villagers again. The government hadn’t offered any assistance in recovering from the disaster either. As a result, there was initially a level of scepticism from the community, who were reluctant to trust the

Armidale connection.

There was a lengthy round table discussion involving all the parties and the locals realised how serious and committed the Armidale group and Kathmandu team are. Amid great excitement and lots of handshakes, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed

by Mrs Moore on behalf of AHS Principal Ms Lasker, who has been very supportive of the project, showing the agreement to support the construction of a new school building. The engineer immediately began drawing plans for a building to replace the one that had been lost.

How is the school rebuild going?

Since that day, there has been amazing progress - the construction is now only three weeks from completion, well before the monsoon season begins in April/May, thanks to the swift work of the construction team.

As more funds are sent over, the team can continue construction of the classrooms. They send regular progress photos, so AHS can keep track and share how the rebuild is going.

All labour and materials for the rebuild are being sourced locally around Nuwakot; this provides additional employment, as well as involving the whole community.

Tell us about fundraising activities and how people can get involved…

The project started with minimal money, so plans at the moment are to build three rooms; additional funds are needed for a fourth room, as promised, as well as money for educational supplies such as desks, books, posters, blackboards and writing materials. Contact

Interest is building as word of the Nepal Project is being spread. Governor Hurley visited Armidale High School in February and was very keen to hear all about the project, having been to Nepal himself.

How many pumpkins have you grown on Tilbuster Station?

More than 9 tonnes of pumpkins have been grown and harvested at Tilbuster Station, helping Pathfinders feed thousands of men, women and children across New South Wales.

More than 50 people attended the harvest day at Tilbuster Station last year, including young people, staff, volunteers and students from Wright College. They picked and washed pumpkins and assisted in sorting and bagging potatoes that were also harvested. We’re hoping to have an even larger harvest day this year, with more attendees and more pumpkins yielded for our 2017 Pumpkin Run. Tell Us About Last Year’s Journey to Sydney.

The 2016 Pumpkin Run journey commenced in Armidale on Tuesday, 12th April with pumpkins loaded on a gooseneck horse trailer, utes and a couple of buses. The Pathfinders team of young people, ranging from 13- to 20-years-old, and youth workers were eager to be a part of giving back to those in need in the community.

The first stop of the Pumpkin Run was the new youth centre, "The Youthie", where attendees enjoyed youth activities and pumpkin soup cooked by Tamworth Meals on Wheels. Next up was Newcastle, where Pathfinders partnered with Community Youth Development Project and the Samaritans to cook at Soul Café and serve a three-course lunch using Tilbuster-grown pumpkins. Soul Café serves hot meals free of charge to more than 130 disadvantaged members of the community five days per week and serves breakfast three times per week to about 80 people.

When we arrived in Sydney, we teamed up with OzHarvest - the first perishable food rescue organisation in Australia collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it, direct and free of charge, to 800 charities, providing much needed assistance to vulnerable men, women and children across Australia. The team jumped straight into the kitchen to cook and then headed off to the Newtown Mission. The Mission’s Community Care Centre provides about 100 meals every day to help feed disadvantaged members of the community.

The cherry on top was getting to finish at Government House in Sydney at the invitation of His Excellency General David Hurley. A group of Pathfinders team members were able to enjoy a pumpkin-themed meal, with delicious foods like pumpkin scones and pumpkin and ricotta arancini with aioli, as they enjoyed the honour of being guests in such a special place.

The Pathfinders staff was inspired by the young people’s attitude and willingness to help. Their confidence grew each day with the tasks of cooking, feeding and speaking to the homeless and many people who were in need of a healthy meal. After all their hard work and long hours, the young people were rewarded with a trip to Bondi Beach. Not only was it a rewarding experience for the young people to show generosity to others, but it was also great for the young people to see Sydney sights that they never thought they’d see.

What’s happening with the 2017 Pumpkin Run? With the hailstorms followed by the heat waves in Armidale earlier this year, our planted pumpkins faced a bit of adversity when growing this year. However, our motivated staff planted more pumpkins in February and are optimistic they’ll grow in the following months.

i Jo. Introduce us to yourself, your family, and tell us how you came to call the New England area home?

Hi, I’m Jo. My husband and I have four children, ranging from six months to 11 years. We moved to Armidale 18 months ago, after living for several years overseas. We are excited about living back in Armidale and bringing our children up in the country. I am the author of a series of books that use storytelling, colouring-in and conversation to help children connect with adults during change and difficult times.

Tell us about “Colour My Story”; how did it come about?

Colour My Story started with a book I wrote for my own children about moving house. The book told the story of our move, and colouring together allowed me to talk to our two and three year olds about what was going to happen. The process enabled me to be present with my children and allowed them to ask questions and feel part of the move. Our three year old read the book most nights and used it like a check list of what was going to happen next. Her questions were about the colour of the truck, the driver of the truck and whether she could pack a box. They weren’t questions I would have guessed, but answering them

Make sure you are passionate about your dream. Dream big! Explore how far you could go with this idea. Find a mentor, someone who can help build you up and be your sounding board. CELEBRATE the wins and learn from the losses. There are always going to be challenges; don’t let them stop you - see them as a detour. Know your audience and give them what they need, not what you want to give them. My books have changed and adapted many times; if I had not made the necessary changes, I would not be in a rapidly growing business eight years on. Good luck!

hat is a flexible learning environment?

A flexible learning environment moves away from a traditional classroom, where students remain in set seats for the majority of the day. It provides students with a choice in the learning space that provides the best opportunities to learn for them. In a flexible learning space, individuals and groups are catered for by moving between spaces that are designed for group work, paired work and individual work. Furniture is moveable, so that different configurations can be made. Our flexible learning environments allow students to work collaboratively, communicate effectively and engage in critical thinking.

What are the benefits of a flexible learning environment?

Flexible learning environments cater for the diverse needs of 21st Century learners and provide the opportunity for more differentiated learning opportunities. How do the students feel about the flexible learning environment?

Students in Stage 3 feel that their classroom is different from previous years where they had set desks. In the flexible learning environment students feel more mature, as they are taking responsibility for their equipment, who they work with and where they work. Students enjoy choosing who they sit with and the space they work in, particularly as this is not designated by teachers.

The students enjoy being able to work with more than one teacher or adult during the day. With the grade being altogether, it doesn’t matter which class they are in; they are with all their peers. It takes time for them to get used to carrying equipment around; however, students feel that the experience of working in a flexible learning space in Stage 3 prepares for moving learning spaces and working with different adults as they will do in high school. The furniture in the classrooms is funky and inviting. There are flip desks, high desks, soft furniture, wobbly chairs and sofas, and the kids like the options they have. Year 5 students have indicated that they would not wish to go back to the traditional classroom, because they feel they are learning in so many different ways and it is fun.

CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER ...

o much change and potential have been in the air in our region, that our heads can spin. I’m sad there seems an almost inbuilt negativity in some attitudes that almost wishes for doom and gloom. Those attitudes never built anything.

And although I’ve lived in some disparate rural regions and very much understand the importance of a sense of identity, I am sad to see that a group in Guyra seems to be stuck on “process” and willing to forego benefit. And as for the whole “Canberra APVMA team working out of Maccas” story, it seems so surreal as to be a form of playful sabotage out of a tale by Kafka.

So for this column I’m going to join Alice and stroll through Wonderland instead. “When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, “it means just what I choose it to mean ...”

Does it matter how we use words? For example, do we live in the New England or New England? As a friend - grinding her teeth - said, “We don’t say we’re going to The England, do we?” What about that very-big-little-made-up word BREXIT, which is giving world history a shake? Lately the word “election” holds more reasonance than usual wherever we live. This is a community column, so I’ll stick to word meanings e.g the word “launch” seems changed ... it now comes at the end of a political campaign, instead of at the beginning. And a policy “announcement” is released before it is made. Oh, Alice. Then there was when “cool” was “hot” - or vice versa - I forget ...

Now there’s pre-autumn fashion - would that be summer? And there’s a Vegan Butcher.

“Glamping” is now in the OED - a tourism business I often wonder about for us. You may have picked up that “quirky” is a word often pointing to my interests. The Eighties word “Foodie” is derisory now. “Innovation “ in the digital world, Tim Rayner of UTS says, means “self-organising teams, fast ideas and cheap customer experiments,” rather than the result

of careful and probably slow development. I guess that works.

A serious discussion can be had over using the word “indigenous”. Many aboriginal people I know don’t like its use, as it can arguably stretch to those generationally born here (e.g. like me?) Margaret Walford prefers “Aboriginal - from the original - and she has told the Governor-General so. I rather agree with her.

One “scientifically justifiable”- but actual “typo” word mistake - in a proof of a Melbourne University paper on increased Australian temperatures set off uproar among climate sceptics, resulting in a four-year delay in checking and publication - ending with the original conclusion!

Economic and political times are undergoing “seismic” change. I was always told that was when opportunities arise. Presenting ourselves “energetically “ with “infectious enthusiasm” can help market us. And telling some of our quirkier stories doesn’t go amiss in attracting attention.

The Business Alliance and the UNE Business School have together reported that more than half local businesses are “holding steady or growing”. The initiatives progressed under the experienced and decisive Administrator are bearing fruit, in contrast to what came to be seen as endless Council bickering. National financial projections are improving both generally and for retail, on top of a very good agricultural season. Our local business groups are working on drawing people together and collaborating on key challenges such as transport, labour and access to like-minded business people. “Collaborator” was a word with unfortunate implications in WWII - now it seems vital. Let’s hope for a fresh, positive Council in September.

With everything happening in the world, “balance” sounds like a good word to me.

“Optimism” should be a prime ingredient in the work of icing our particular cake.

When we opened the office in 2009, our first listing was a beautifully restored 1896 Arts & Crafts home, “Opawa”, in Mann Street.

Actually, it was our family home and reflected a long term interest in heritage architecture and restoration. I think that many prospective vendors saw that passion and thought that Janet and I could represent them in the sale of their homes too. So, that began our eight year journey to date in the sale of many of Armidale’s most prestigious and important residential properties.

Often the buyers of these homes, whether local, from Sydney or interstate, had pre-registered their interest with us.

Of course, prestige doesn’t just mean heritage.

A prestige home can be of any age, size or style. I think that the word “prestige” should often be substituted for “aspirational”. In that context, Armidale has many homes worthy of that description. We enjoy marketing and selling prestige homes, because they are sometimes

quirky and interesting, but always with a charm and character of their own. Each represents unique challenges and opportunities in their marketing.

Lifestyle properties are different again. As many would know, we came from the Southern Highlands before arriving in Armidale. At that time, we owned and operated a 340 acre hobby farm, “Renrow Park”, outside of Mittagong, on one of the original holdings. We experimented with performance pastures and cattle types, eventually settling on a 75 head Angus breeding herd. We loved this lifestyle property and learnt a lot about husbandry and land management.

This experience now lets us interact with vendors whose acreage properties similarly hold a special place in their hearts. You will see from our current listings some wonderful examples of this type of property.

How did you achieve that? In my view, the single biggest difference in the way we market our properties is focus (no pun intended!) We

believe that the property, not the agent, needs to be front and centre of any campaign. Sure, we all use drones, virtual tours, music and videos these days, but the property itself must be the focal point. I reckon that the Award Judges probably understood that too.

Previous clients give glowing testimonials about your service. What can new clients expect? Our agency has been set up in a team environment with a limit on the number of properties we represent. This has two benefits to vendors and buyers alike. Firstly, no-one in the office “owns” a listing, and so any enquiry can be handled by any agent at any time. Secondly,

limiting listings creates time and allows better attention to detail. More time for every vendor and buyer. More time to increase the agent’s knowledge about the property and more time to educate buyers about features and benefits to maximise selling price. So, that is what new clients can expect - more time and attention.

Where will you be in five years? That’s an easy one to answer. We intend to still be living in Armidale, working with some delightful clients and selling prestige and lifestyle properties throughout the district. Janet reckons we should think of about retirement after that, but I’m not so sure!

eoff, what prompted your retirement?

After selling rural properties with Landmark for the past 18 years, I took long service leave mid last year and enjoyed the change so much, Di and I made the decision to extend my time off and retire! I found there is always something going on to keep me busy; I like to muck about in the shed, as blokes do.

Di is happy to have me home to help in the garden. We also like to travel, whether it is overseas, or within Australia with our caravan, so retirement sounded like a good way to be able to do some more travelling at our leisure.

Our son, Wesley, and wife Kelly and their daughters, Sophia and Bronte, live near Coonabarabran, and we look forward to visiting them more through the year. Daughter Jane, and her soon to be husband, Deon, reside in Newcastle and, likewise, we look forward to more time with them.

Can you tell us a little of the Geoff Leedham story?

I was born in Tamworth, and I spent my younger school life in Lismore. Much of these early days were spent on a dairy farm, and during the school holidays I spent every Thursday at the Lismore cattle sales.

I lived in Tamworth through my high school years. After leaving school I spent some time in the Northern Territory as a ringer on cattle stations. I started my livestock agency career in 1972 as a trainee auctioneer with Winchcombe Carson, based at the regional office in Tamworth. From there, I moved around gaining 50 new england focus.

Unfortunately, in line with many businesses, the middle man becomes vulnerable and is often cut out by the online marketing and direct sales - while it might be perceived to be efficient, it certainly doesn't build the relationships, loyalty or family involvement as was evident in the past.

Any parting words in retirement?

I still speak to Jon Goudge at Landmark Harcourts regularly, and I enjoy that involvement. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family, travelling, in the garden, and a hit of golf. I look forward to what the future holds in retirement ... All Over, All Done!

IS A REMARKABLE ORGANISATION RUN ENTIRELY BY VOLUNTEERS, OFFERING MORE THAN 60 COURSES TO OVER 600 MEMBERS FOR A SMALL ANNUAL FEE. WE SAT DOWN WITH NEWLY RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT, IAN JACKSON.

hy is U3AA so successful?

The most important factor is the number of volunteers who contribute. This includes: committee, course coordination and course leaders, office staff, computer and website maintenance, publicity and newsletter editor. Many members are prepared to share their knowledge and expertise with others.

Some courses are ongoing, but there are always new topics and new leaders emerging. U3AA is a dynamic and flexible organisation. Members might suggest new topics, and others might come forward with good ideas and suggestions.

Some courses are in such demand, there are waiting lists. There is no limit to the number of courses and activities members can enrol in, and the annual fee is currently only $40.

What range of courses is offered?

We cover just about every interest and activity. Exercise options include aquarobics, bones and balance, Tai Chi, Yoga, croquet, table tennis and bushwalking. Members read plays at Armchair Theatre, watch Classic Movies and share their travel experiences. We have a number of book groups. Members can study German, Italian, French and Spanish. How does U3AA contribute to the needs of older people in the community?

There is much evidence that a happy and healthy ageing process depends on exercise, learning new skills and social interaction, and these are some of the main benefits our members gain from our courses. There are no entry requirements at U3AA. We find that many people who have just retired want to continue to use their skills and know-how. They join us and inject energy and ideas. For many, it means the adjustment gap between full or part-time paid work and retirement is not so confronting. Members who have lost a spouse or partner find it helps them to remain socially engaged and feel part of a very large, friendly and supportive organisation.

ell us the history behind the Armidale City Band; how long has it been running?

The Armidale City Band has been providing musical entertainment to Armidale and district citizens for 138 years. The band is believed to be the oldest continuous running brass band in NSW, and possibly Australia.

From its beginnings in December 1878, the band has weathered the highs and lows of the past 138 years, including two World Wars and a Depression.

What are some of the community events and activities the band gets involved with?

The band takes great pleasure in performing at many special and civic ceremonies, especially ANZAC Day ceremonies, HMAS Armidale and Australia Day celebrations. It is always generous with its support of many fundraisers, especially where it can entertain the sick and elderly. The band is central to the enjoyment of many Christmas celebrations held in the city. Overall, we have at least 20 local performances per year, but as well we like to work towards attending the occasional state contest, for which preparation plays an important part in team building, improving relationships amongst members and of course, improves the overall musical standard of the band.
